ONE WORD CAN SUMMARIZE OCTOBER FOR ME: HO’OKIPA! What a fun month it’s been! October started off with wind and waves for almost 2 weeks straight! So hard to describe the feeling of coming back to sailing in warm water and punchy waves of Hookipa! I sure made the best of it sailing long and hard on my brand new 2014 3.8 and 4.2 mutants, trying to get as much training in as I could before the well talked about and awaited event: the AWT aloha classic! We then had a forced week or so off from windsurfing as the wind shut off for a little while mid-month. But changing gears to surfing, tennis, jogging and enjoying some of the activities Maui has to offer was a nice change of pace. The wind returned a day before the start of the Aloha Classic. With a solid forecast for the days ahead, 130-something competitors and the addition of the PWA for the men, there was going to be a lot of action! We had 12 amazing ladies registered for the contest. And we sailed 16 to18 minute-heats in overhead to mast high conditions. The event went really well for me right from the start, winning my first heat and allowing me to skip 2nd round and go straight to semifinals. I felt a little more pressure to avoid any costly mistakes and sailed a bit more conservatively in semifinals. I came second in that heat behind Tiffany Ward who picked out the biggest waves and hit critical sections. But thankfully, it was enough for me to advance to finals. Wave selection was crucial during the final and Junko Nagoshi picked out the best wave of the heat and rode it hard and well, giving her the highest wave score! I am pleased with my 2nd place finish behind Junko, reigning champion at hookipa known for her style and aggression in any surf size at her home spot here at Hookipa. Congratulations also to Tatiana Howard for taking the 3rd spot, and Tiffany for her 4th place. The final was so much fun! I am amazed how hard the girls charge and rip and are able to be so competitive while being so supportive and friendly with each other. There are a lot of amazing people in the windsurfing world, and I am sure happy to be part of it!!

So this wraps up the 2013 AWT season! It was a good one for me: winning Santa Cruz, Pistol, Baja, Peru and coming 2nd here at Hookipa! I remain the AWT overall women champion for a 3rd year in a row! And can’t wait for next season to start!

Ingrid powered her way through the womens field to finish third in the Aloha classic. Ingrid already accomplished athlete now dominates womens wave sailing here in the USA, adds a third AWT title to her name, even 4th if we count the first year when there was only one event.

AWT CHAMP FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW In the beginning of September I was still in Hossegor (south west of France) for the Quicksilver Pro France. I had the chance to surf and see some of the best surfers in the world competing during a couple days and that was a really good experience. For example i could see how Mick Fanning gets focus right before his heat and some stuff like that. Then in October 6th I came back to Guadeloupe to train before the contest with my coach, and started to get focus. I arrived in Maui on the 20th, right before the contest, because I didn’t want to have lot of pressure around me. We started the contest with the AWT, and I got the 3° place and made me the American champ for the second year in a row :) and got the 13° place in the PWA which I’m very

disappointed about because I know I can do way better. Now I hope they’re gonna make this contest happen again for next year so I can improve myself. Now I think i’m gonna stay in maui all November to train and spend some times with the friends I have here... Aloha Camille Juban

8TH IN PWA FREESTYLE It’s great to be back back home and chill for a moment after all that traveling and PWA events. After all I finished 8th in PWA freestyle for this season, which I really didn’t expect. Not good results. The new Loco Pro are working really good. I love so much the 4.0 and 4.8 and 5.6. The 4.4 and 5.2 I still need to find the right tuning, but as I didn’t use these those two sizes very much this season I can’t say they are bad. Overall it’s big step we made by having the Loco in four battens but still keeping them as strong so that they can last a long time. The TR9’s made me so fast in Sylt that till today I still replay the video of me just blasting thru the course and passing the bigger heavier guys. I have no doubt that the TRX will be amazing. Back home, I just came back for the Bonaire regatta, which wasn’t that big this year. Most of the windsurfers didn’t compete. We did our best trying to organize a tow-in freestyle session with the Seadoo, but later was not given permission as the sea nature patrol officer thought it was not healthy for the reef, even though there isn’t any reef, how crazy is that? Wind has been good, been sailing most on the Loco Pro 4.8. Video can be seen on my Athlete facebook page

A couple of days I went fishing and caught some tunas and bar jacks. It’s good at times to have a break from windsurfing and do something else.
Sitting here writing this Report it’s dark clouds and raining outside, typical Bonaire weather for this time of the year. November is rolling in. Two months before the end of another year. Good news is I just signed another two year contract with Mystic, so that makes the day better :). Taty Frans NB-9 :)

OCTOBER FULFILLING A CHILDHOOD DRE With the upcoming AWT/PWA JP Aloha Classic at Hookipa, the first part of October saw a massive influx of riders coming back to Maui. The stoke level was off the charts as everyone eagerly awaited the return of the PWA to the mecca of wavesaling- Hookipa. For me, I was excited to see my friends who had been traveling all summer and looked forward to my chance to get on the water during the AWT. There had been rumors spreading that there would potentially be extra wildcard slots for the PWA, but the chances seemed so far off that I hadn’t really paid attention. On Thursday, the 24th, the call was made to run the AWT Pro division as it had to be completed to determine the wildcard entrants into the PWA event. We had classic 4.6-5.1, head-logo high conditions for the first day, perfect for the first round of the event. For my first heat I decided to take my 4.6 Mutant and hit the water. The anticipation and excitement of sailing Hookipa all to myself got the better of me and I was a little jittery during my heat, not really picking the waves I wanted, and came back to the beach disappointed. With the AWT format, everyone gets to go back out in the 2nd round, so I tried to recollect myself, remind myself that this was about having fun, and headed back out in the afternoon for my 2nd heat. With the lighter winds I picked my 5.1 Mutant and had a blast, catching wave after wave for 18 minutes straight, and actually won my heat! I was stoked!

After a long weekend of less than ideal conditions, the call was made on Monday to start the PWA event. My qualifier heat, with Skyler Haywood, Fabrice Beaux, and Masahiro Motohashi, was first on deck, and I again found myself sh*@#&ing my pants, as all these guys absolutely rip, and the dream was yet again so close,

The next morning they announced at the skippers meeting that anyone who advanced into the quarter finals would earn a wildcard into the PWA. I couldn’t believe it. Only 2 people stood between me and a childhood dream that I never thought would really, actually happen. Talk about getting nervous all of the sudden. And to make it even better, my heat was stacked, with good friend ’wave killer’ Jake Miller, fellow MauiSails rider and Hookipa veteran Ferdinando, and Harley Stone. With the morning winds building I decided to take my 5.1 Mutant over the 4.6, and hit the water, hoping to just find a couple good waves. I found the waves I wanted but felt like I didn’t sail as smoothly as I would have liked, had a couple really long swims, and came back to the beach feeling like I had come up short. The 15 minutes it took for the judges to make their decision felt like a lifetime, and in the end, Jake and I had finished on top, and were going to the PWA!!! I couldn’t really even pay attention during my semi-final heat with Jake, Camille, and KP, and ended up finishing 4th in the semi’s leaving me tied in 13th place for the event. However, as I was about to leave the beach, they called me up to the judges tower and informed me that they had made a mistake and that there were only 2 additional spots for the PWA, so the 4 of us that finished 4th in the quarter-final round would actually have to compete in a qualifier for the main event. Talk about being bummed..

but so far away. Conditions were building as we hit the water for our qualifier heat, the wind was on the rise, and the swell was increasing, but still coming in from the west, making the end bowl closeout section pretty tricky. The heat was a blur for me, I picked off a couple good size waves in the beginning, fell a lot and swam in the middle, and then had one wave in the end with 2 solid turns and an aerial that had me smiling. When I came back to the beach I felt like I had at least given it a fight, but could not believe it when I saw my friends running down the bluff telling me I had actually won the heat, and had to go right back out! Quickly putting on the PWA jersey and slapping on the PWA stickers on my sail, standing next to legends like the Pritchards and Josh Angulo, and all the current top wave sailors, at the water’s edge at Hookipa about to go out for my heat, it was impossible to believe any of it was even real! My first heat was against Kauli Seadi, Bernd Roediger, and Victor Fernandez, and I got owned, and it didn’t even matter! The conditions just got better and better throughout the day, and it was a dream come true to be a part of it, and spend the rest of the day watching friends make it through the rounds, and Levi coming out on top at 1st! After a couple days off the decision was made to start the double elimination. In my first round of the double I had Francisco Goya, Klaas Voget, and Leon Jammer. With a World Wave Champ/ windsurfing Legend, and two top contenders on the PWA, I figured I’d just go out and have fun and enjoy the experience one more time and see what happens. With the wind being a little more gusty and offshore, and the west bowls still coming in, I decided to take my 4.6 to have a little more control on

the waves, and prayed that I wouldn’t get stuck on the inside bobbing around. As the heat started the wind picked up, and I was stoked to have picked the 4.6. The waves were tricky to find, but I managed to get a couple longer waves up at Middles, and ended with a nice set off the point. I felt like I had sailed well and was happy with that, but again, could not believe it when they announced that I had won my heat, and again had to head right back out!! I finished 3rd in my last heat, ending up 17th overall in the event. I’ve already probably written way to much for the newsletter, but hey, this wasn’t a usual month! Big thanks to Samantha Bittner and Rich Paige for bringing this event back to Maui! And a huge thanks to all the people who have supported me along the way to get me where I am now and make a childhood dream actually come true, I can never thank you enough! And of course, congratulations to Camille Juban, Ingrid Larouche, and Ferdinando for taking the overall in their divisions!!! And now, it’s back to the water for another epic day! IA LUDERITZ SPEED CHALLENGE The illusive 50 knots just slipped away, but my final outcome was a 48.9 Peak, 47.822 ten second and a 46.545 500m. Huge increases on my personal bests. I have learnt heaps, made new friends and had a great time travelling with Tony Wynhoven and Sail Quick, Daffy. Thanks to everyone that supported us and followed our Journey till now. Its up to Craig Spotty and Brad Anderson to fly the Aussie flag, good luck guys and go fast.

MAUISAILS MASTS DEVELOPMENT Very important development has taken place in the masts. We have recognized some areas we could improve so we have initiated a change in the bend curve to be more in line with the industry standard. Now our masts are more constant curve instead of hardtop. And we have improved the strength of the bottom section of the mast by adding a Kevlar laminate to the outside layer. Overall we have a much more durable and better performing mast. HOW DOES THIS EFFECT MAUISAILS CUSTOMERS WITH PREVIOUS VERSION MASTS AND WANT TO USE THE TR-10? We have done extensive testing with both masts over the past 6 months and while the new mast is BETTER in performance and more durable the pre 2014 masts will work well in the TR-10. HOW DOES THE CHANGE OF MAST EFFECT OLDER SAIL DESIGNS, FOR EXAMPLE IF SOMEONE WANTS TO PUT THE NEW MAST INTO OLDER TR RACE DESIGNS? Again, we have tested these combinations and are happy to report the new mast will increase performance of previous versions of race sails. Furthermore, but not encouraged‌.. customers with other brand masts can now use them in the MauiSails TR-10 and have a very good match. Race masts are now called SRS Race 100-K and SRS Carbon 75-K TO SIMPLIFY OUR RDM WAVE MAST LINE WE ARE NOW OFFERING TWO DIFFERENT RDM MASTS BOTH WITH KEVLAR REINFORMENT IN THE LOWER SECTIONS. Katana Wave 100 RDM is the 100% carbon pure high performance and light weight wave mast. Used by the highest level of wave sailors looking for peak performance from their sails. Gladiator wave 75 URDM is our new BOMB proof RDM wave mast. Still a great match to our wave sails but built very strong and durable. Slightly narrower in diameter than the regular RDM, hence the name URDM, ultra reduced diameter mast. With a slight reduction in diameter we were able to increase the wall thickness and strength while still maintaining an accurate bend to match the MauiSails wave models. Again the wave mast are now a little more constant curve, less hard top than before and bringing them more in line with the industry standard.

TR-X IS GOING TO BE A GREAT STEP FORWARD Well October started off with the final few days of Sylt and unfortunately again not a lot of wind or racing. This whole season was a lot of light or no wind racing and a lot of racing that should not have even been run. But that is the way it goes and again I had another 8th place this year giving me two 8th place finishes and one 5th as my counting results, thank goodness I could discard Korea, but this put me in 8th overall for the year. I was glad to be done with Sylt because it is such a long, cold and usually not much wind event, which means a lot of waiting around in the cold. Plus it meant the end of the season and after a not so great one I was ready for it to be over so I could go back to the drawing board and try to prepare and tune better for next season. I took a short detour to Utah after Sylt before heading back to Maui to help finish off the new TR-X off. It was sort of a funky October in Maui and not a lot of wind so it was hard to get a lot of testing in but I did manage to get enough good water time to try out all the stuff that Phil and Art had been working so hard on. All came out very nicely with the combining of the xt and monofilm lines, I really like all the new sails with the modified shaping and luff curves as well as the slightly different panel layouts. The new TR-X is going to be a great step forward for our Maui Sails racing program. We also were able to get all the new masts on the water and work them into all the new sail testing so they sails and masts will and are working perfectly together. So now it is time to take a little break from it all and start to recharge for next season. I am looking forward to getting all my new TR-X sails and the new JP slalom line so I can start to set them up and tune them to get the most out them for next years racing. It looks like we will have an early start to the race season in March on the island of Margarita, I really hope that this event does happen. So I am going to need to start getting back in tip top shape asap to be ready to move back up in the rankings in 2014!!! Aloha Micah Buzianis

OCTOBER A MONTH IN FALL October of 2013 has been taking me to places I haven’t been before. Once we did three hospitals in one day! On the 5th, Samantha caught her shoe on some stuff on the cabin floor and fell backwards without being able to catch herself. She landed hard on her right elbow and thus began the saga of the arm. It was smashed pretty badly, and had in total, eight pieces to keep track of and get back into place. Maui is a tad short of the high skilled trauma surgeons and so we have been flying back and forth to Oahu, living in hospital rooms and sadly for her, enduring lots of pain and struggle. This has been my focus since the accident and although I have kept up with Art and his work, met again with our fabric developer at Dimension, and watched with satisfaction the results of the AWT (all winners!!!), this has not been such a great month. For sure not a great month for Samantha. But the Doc was terrific, a third generation orthopedic surgeon with a full tool kit. Now he just wants movement, movement, and more movement, which is also very challenging. But she/we are going to get beyond the injury and get the range of motion back so she will windsurf again, and can be grinding the big winches. November can only get better is what I figure. And TR-X is done and getting ready to go in the boxes. From what I know already, they are going to be very desirable... and damn fast. Aloha Barry Spanier

A MONTH OF CASEY REHER October was a busy month, all the pros were on island, and we had the PWA AWT aloha classic along with some great waves and wind. The Aloha Classic was a great event, not just for the island of Maui, but for windsurfing everywhere. It brought all of the best windsurfers in the world together, at Ho’okipa, the best place in the world to windsurf. The contest was super fun, from both a competing in and spectating standpoint. I competed in the youth and amateur division, I claimed both titles and never lost a heat. For the contest I did something I don’t normally do, and that is sail a big sail. I sailed the 2014 4.6 mutant. It was great in the light wind, it’s such a big sail for me, but it felt like my 4.2, just more powerful, I was able to do the shot vertical bottom turns that i love doing so much very easily, and normally with a big sail, they’re pretty hard. I sailed the 4.6 for the entire contest, and in my last heat, my amateur final, I was very happy I did. Right before my heat the wind picked up, and they decided to throw one jump into the mix. That would have been fine if the wind didn’t die as soon as the green flag went up. I caught my waves first and then went up wind and got two big forwards, which wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the sail. The other competitors struggle to get a good jump. I now have a great new sail for those light wind and mast high Ho’okipa days that i can’t wait to use. Congrats to all Maui sails team riders! We did it again!
