APRIL IS THE TAXING MONTH Just to be sure of a connection to the matrix, the first two weeks of April always seem to be focused on determining how much needs to be paid to people who might be spending ’our’ money in ways that are not so pleasant. But we got through that and move to the next round of numbers. Like some sort of odd wheel, April also brings the final photo shoot sails to be ready for the arrival of Bogo and his motion capture tools, and the other sailors who love to be working with the newest ideas also gather and mix testing with performing. This year, Art’s focus on three battens in wave sails seems to be getting lots of looks and admiration from some of the old guard on the beach. They know what looks good and are all about recognizing the Epic trend. The graphics flow and the new materials rock the weight spectrum and make the grade for durability and performance. I hear about some of the other subtle changes to the rest of the lineup, but nothing like the Epic noise. Those will be worth checking out. Cornelia got a rest from sanding and paint (actually I did) and got switched into small kine job mode. Every day I just went there and checked some small thing off the list. Another new deck bag to keep all the headsails in one easy spot, some more broken boom handrails to make the companionway safer, and the beginnings of replacing all the toggles in the rig after finding several of the original ones with stress corrosion cracking. The medium jib also got a set of ’soft’ jib hanks made like footstraps, with the double Velcro(tm) closure. That will be a fun experiemnt to play with, since it requires lots of sailing, which is happening more now that the deck is done, and especially now that the days are longer. The best wind is always later in the day anyhow. See you in May. Aloha Barry Spanier

I U A M N O H T N O M ANOTHER Just like that another month here on Maui has come to a close. I don’t know what’s going on lately but it feels like these last few months have just flown by and before I know it rent, credit card bills, and my newsletter article are due again! It’s pretty hard to complain about life when you’re living on Maui. Sure, the weather and conditions could have been better this month. Yeah, it would have been nice to have a 24-hr period of no rain. No doubt the wind could have been more consistent and it would have been nice to have a few more NNW swells find there way to the North Shore. But damn, we still got some fun days on the water at Hookipa this month, from 4.2-5.1, and when the weather’s horrible and still all you need is a shorty wetsuit, well, that ain’t a bad April! In fact, my most fun sessions this month were during and just after a squall passed, the crowd disappears with the rain, the wind steadies out after, and the waves get glassy smooth! Next month we start our photoshoots and I’m really looking forward to trying out the line of sails for 2015! Testing the Epic has been amazing, and I’ve seen some sneak peeks of the Legend, Ghost, and Switch and can’t wait to get them on the water too! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

THE OTHER BRANDS SHOOTING MONTH I got to Maui at the end of March and it was already full of pros in the water. Luckily MauiSails wasn’t shooting yet as well as the Quatro. April is always the month where there is wind happens everyday and Ho’okipa is crowded in and out the water. All the pros and my friends were shooting almost everyday and I was just sailing for myself next to them. As the conditions were not so good I took the time to really work on my boards with Keith and especially on the new EPIC 3 batten sails with our designer, Art. Actually, it felt sooo good when I first got out with the Epic, the sail is not only light by itself but it feels so light in the hand too.. I’m really happy with this new sail because Art did super job on it, and i also had time to test it well, so I could give good feedback. We did some testing together and that was really useful. It’s always better when the designer and the rider get together ‘cause that’s when you get the best result! Then i got some new Quatro custom boards that I had to test and got used to it. So now I am totally ready for the upcoming season. Next month will be about our shooting and new product :) Cheers Camille Juban

REHAB AND SCHOOL April was a pretty good month. It started off with my birthday. I turned 17. The month before, I had torn my MCL and badly bruised my Meniscus. Most of the March and Early April was spent doing rehab and school, rehab and school. It was a never-ending circle. I was going crazy for a little bit, I had nothing to do. My girlfriend was in Cambodia, all my friends were surfing because the waves were great and I was in a huge brace that made me look like a robot. I tore my MCL and bruised my Meniscus doing an aerial. I was super tweaked and I didn’t get “un-tweaked” before I landed and when I did land, I landed nose first and my back right knee took the impact. I thought I had broken my knee, I couldn’t move the entire leg, I was sweating in the water and I could barely swim. Bryan Metcalf helped me in and up the beach. Hours at Kaiser is reason enough to be mad, but having to drive past Ho’okipa everyday and seeing perfect wind and waves makes you crazy. The time that wasn’t spent doing school or rehab, was spent watching surf and windsurf videos, getting stoked to come back. Finally on the 18th, I sailed for the first time. I have never been more stoked for kneehigh waves. My doctor said to take it easy for 4-5 weeks, so my first run I did a massive stalled forward and planed out of it. It really wasn’t that hard.. I just pulled my back hand super hard and before I knew it I was sailing again. Since then I have been doing a lot of rehab, running and riding a stationary bike. I still get painful twinges while sailing and I am still not 100% but I am confident that soon enough, I will be. Aloha, Casey Reher

APRIL WAS COOL What a month full of wind and joy. Been having a blast the whole month. Freestyling a lot and been using both my Loco Pro 4.4 and 4.8 and it’s been many years since we have this kind of wind blowing from December thru April. How great is this feeling to be able to windsurf so much and combining it with fitness makes the days, weeks, and month even better. Stronger is what I feel and more relaxed and my mind is ready for the competition. I have been mostly freestyling for about 3 hours in the morning and slalom training in the late afternoon, jibing around marks with 6 other Bonaire slalom guys and each day we train I could see improvement in each of the 6 guys and they seem to catch up in speed and are getting better in jibe, So this is a good thing cause that makes me be better in both jibing techniques and improving my speed. I have also been filming most of my freestyle and wave sailing. All the video and photo’s and the latest news you can always see on my Facebook athlete page www.facebook.com/TatyNB9 Catch me up on my next report of being on Maui where I am for the 2015 MauiSails product photoshoot. Peace Taty Frans NB-9 :)

ACTION PACKED MON

At the loft, we’ve been busy with the new wave sail development and our annual photo shoot. Our daughter celebrated her 9th birthday and it also marked my 9th anniversary on the MauiSails design team. Time flies… We got very lucky with the weather for our wave shoot as what had been an endless cycle of rain and poor wind, magically cleared for 3 days of classic trade winds, head to mast high surf and sunny skies. Sailing together with our team we had some great action on the water and Bogo managed to get some good shots too. The first day was the most memorable as the swell built to a solid mast high from the NNW and nice, light, side-offshore winds gave just enough pressure for some buttery smooth wave riding at Lanes. As the wind forecast wasn’t calling for trades and with Hookipa

NTH ON MANY LEVELS

being packed with surfers, there were hardly any other windsurfers around. It felt great to be out at my old favourite break, Lanes, taking advantage of the hollow sections with pretty much just the MauiSails team on the water. The developments with the new sails have been working out really well and getting excited feedback from our team riders. Some noteables have been the amazing maneuverability, responsiveness, powerful drive and huge wind range of the new Mutants. The ridiculous light weight and effortless control of the Ghost CS as well as the super light and “cat like quick handling of the new Epic sail line. Should be a great season. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

VERY CROWDED TIME ON MAUI April kept up the trend of trade winds back on Maui. This is the month of photo shoots on Maui so it was a good thing that the winds were back, the sun on the other hand wasn’t quite as good as the wind but good enough. It is also a very crowded time on Maui for windsurfing and waterspouts on the North Shore, with lots of pros and cool guys hanging out getting their pictures taken. Not only is it all the major windsurfing brands but some of the kite brands as well so it is hard to find a nice quiet spot to sail and test where you are not battling the crowds, but I still managed to find my spots and get plenty of good water time in. My first focus was to keep training and testing my new TRX’s and JP’s to get ready for the first PWA event in Korea so I used as many days as I could to do this. Testing and running starts and buoys with Phil and other team mates went well with all sorts of different wind conditions I was able to get a lot of good water time. Second to this was my responsibilities at the JP photo shoot. JP has a lot of boards in their line ups of windsurfing and SUP gear so moving all this stuff around and getting on the water for the shots takes time. Fortunately for me I don’t have to sail to much for the camera, although it is good water time it does take away from the focus of testing and training, so I only had to be available a few days for this. The biggest hit of the month was the tragedy in Korea, with the huge loss of life and unfortunate way that it happened it was very sad for a country as small as Korea. Even though the PWA is a minuscule blip on the radar compared to this it did impact our tour with the cancellation of the racing event in Jinha Beach. The organizers were very sad and sorry that this happened but it was certainly the right thing to do. I will miss going to Korea this year but look forward to next year and relish the extra time that I get on Maui with my family and the extra time to sail. Next month will start the Maui Sails photo shoot which is always a good time, getting to try some of the new designs especially in the waves is a huge highlight!! Lets hope the wind, waves and sun continue on for May as well!!! Aloha Micah Buzianis
