TIME TO GO BACK TO CALI!!! Oh boy what a month it has been! After the trials and tribulations of dealing with US customs last month Sarah and I still were in limbo about our plans for August, but either way our Gorge episode had come to a close, and we started the month saying goodbye to our friends and making the 20 hour drive south to LA. Sarah’s employment and travel authorization got approved and we thought there’d be no better way to celebrate then by heading down to Baja for the AWT Quatro Desert Showdown in San Carlos!

A contest in San Carlos is kind of an oxymoron, normally you don’t associate the freedom of San Carlos with any sort of schedule, but being there with the AWT family is awesome, and when the contest window started, I was stoked and nervous all over again. The hardest part of sailing San Carlos for me is committing to riding a smaller sail than I always think so you don’t shoot out in front of the pocket of the wave there with the side-off to offshore winds. My first session I rigged 4.6, then before I hit the water, de-rigged and rigged 4.2 and was stoked! The Mutant’s grunt and agility in the bottom turns suits the San Carlos wave perfectly, and I sailed my ass off for the first three days on 4.2, just so happy to be back down there wavesailing.

The Pro Men’s division was held on Monday and by then I had a couple days to get dialed in and also wear myself completely out. At this point the forecast for the rest of the week was pretty bleak and Monday looked like it was going to be the only good day of waves left for the whole week. Down in San Carlos I’m more excited to just play than anything so I didn’t bother saving my strength when I woke up, just saw waves and went surfing for a couple hours and had a blast! After breakfast the wind started to come up and the guys drove down telling us our heats were starting in 30 min! My first heat was with my good friend Byran Metcalf-Perez and Kevin Pritchard, who I seem to be in heats with now pretty much everytime. Multiple-time world champ, first guy to take down Bjorn’s domination, one of the most badass windsurfers of all time, massive onehanded one-footed back loops for days, gouging top turns, and born and raised east of Los Angeles, KP and brother Matt have been heroes of mine since I was a kid. KP was one of the biggest reasons I was so stoked to start riding for MauiSails back in the day- do you guys even remember the first legends’ design wasn’t an ’x’ but a ’k’? Do you remember the massive one-handed one footed aerial KP had in Cabo Verde on that legend? Well I do, and I do every time before I have to go out in a heat with him. The wind had filled in and was getting stronger by the start of our heat and at the last minute I grabbed my 4.2 instead of the 4.6 and headed out. With 20 minute heats you just have to be patient and hope for the right sets. It was really inconsistent but the good waves were still there to be had. I was in great position for the first set that came through and couldn’t even believe it. I had a couple

turns on it before the aerial section in the race-tracks popped up like a giant present for me and I floated over the section and back down in front of the wave in time to get one more turn before another little aerial at the chili bowl, then a few more turns before finally kicking out. I WAS STOKED! My 2nd wave I botched, but my 3rd was a repeat of the first, and I felt I did the best I could do in the conditions. By the time I got back upwind to our launching cove after the heatI saw Sarah jumping up and down and knew that I won the heat! That was a pretty awesome feeling for me, even if the conditions weren’t the most consistent, it was rad. KP and Bryan made it through the 2nd round, so I was back up against them in round 3, and also Bernd, great. By the time our next heat started the wind was stronger, but also getting sporadic. I saw the guys in the heat before me getting lit up on their top turns and aerials with their 4.2s, leech’s fluttering to the max, and decided last minute to grab my 3.8. Bad idea. Horrible idea. Right as our heat started the wind dropped and I spent the next 20 minutes doing a lot of screaming and swearing while bobbing around, pumping onto whatever waves I could and not being able to pick the ones I wanted. In the last 30 seconds I caught a medium size wave and rode it past the chili bowl way downwind, even out of the footstraps at some points just for the hell of it. When I kicked out, way downwind where it’s normally lighter, a gust came and just like that I was full power, and made it all the way back and around the point in a run- ridiculous, and the wind stayed up like that for the next 2 hours. But sometimes that’s just the way it goes. 20 minutes of frustration- but overall 215 hours and 40 minutes of all time epicness being down in San Carlos, so

no complaints from me! KP wound up going through to the finals, where he finished 2nd to Morgan, my personal favorite in San Carlos since no one spends more time on the water there than him, and I was happy to come in 5th for the event. Like I mentioned, the forecast wasn’t looking to good for the rest of the week, and a lot of people cleared out. But Wednesday morning a whole new swell popped up on the charts, and by Thursday midday we had solid waves coming back in on the point. Friday was unbelievable. One of the biggest days I’ve seen in San Carlos, we scored

epic surfing at the Chili Bowl all morning, had a party wave with Bryan and 6 dolphins jumping (no joke, but no photo/video evidence either), then in the afternoon the wind came up and the tide cleaned up the waves for some of the cleanest, biggest lines I’ve ever seen come through the point. The Amateurs, lucky bastards, still hadn’t finished their division, and got to run their semi’s and finals in amazing conditions. Sarah, after her 2nd place finish in the Pro Women’s division, followed it up with insane riding in the massive sets to come in 2nd in the Amateur Men’s! Halfway through the final, as the sun was already going down, Morgan and I shlogged out and scored a sick session until dark, my favorite thing in the world. After an awesome week it was back to LA just in time for the 20 year swell form Hurricane Marie to hit Malibu. The wind was a little fickle the first couple days, but on the tail end of the swell I got to score a pretty sweet 5.1 session at Leo, with a couple logo, almost mast high waves still coming through! With the late summer/early fall season upon us here in LA, I’m looking forward to more wavesailing days at Leo and slalom at Cabrillo for September! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser

SURGERY TIME! As you already know I dislocated my shoulder on my last trip in Oman and I decided to come back in Guadeloupe to see how bad it was because i couldn’t sail anymore. When I saw the doctor he told me that I only had the ligament to operate so he gave me an appointment for August 25. So until this date I just enjoyed what I could do before the surgery like going surfing on small wave or going for a slalom session and cruising far out just to relax my mind for the incoming surgery and all this time that I would have to spend without doing anything after the surgery. I also went fishing with my brother... Good thing that I enjoyed like that because when the doctor operated on me he realized that I needed a bicep surgery also... he did it at the same time as my shoulder but it’s been a week already and its still painfull because it was a bigger surgery that we expected. So now insted of 3 month recovery, I need 4 months, but I think it’s gonna be a good chance in my life and my career can come back stronger. I’m already thinking about all the effort i’m gonna put in the re-education which should start next month. Thanks a lot to MauiSails to support me in this down time and to believe in me. FUERTE. HAWAII STATE SLALOM CHAMPIONSHIPS. TURKEY August started out with a long trip back to Maui from Fuerte, I was supposed to get back on the eve of the 31 July but with some delays I just barely managed to make it before it turned into August. I did miss Dakotah’s birthday dinner but we made up for it with a belated celebration. And after one day of recovery from the jetlag it was back to racing in the Hawaii State Slalom championships. After a slow foggy start to my morning races, some lighter winds and a trip up on an anchor line I finished in second in the age groups. But the wind picked up a bit for the afternoon session as did my racing and I won three out of the four races to take the Pro State Title. We even managed to make up one of the other missed weekends and I managed to win all four of these races which gave me enough points and results to take the Maui County Slalom Title in both my age group and the Pros. It was a great day of racing to finish of the summer race season, and even though we had a couple of no wind days the race crew made up for it on this final day of the 2014 season. I finally managed to recover from the jet lag of the Fuerte trip and it was back into training and testing mode. It was time to start working on the new TR ideas and concepts and put them into some protos. Art and Phil had some great ideas and

after all the racing feedback and customer feedback from the year we were ready to move forward. Some of the first ideas are to play around with some different battens and batten configurations. Art made the new designs and sent them off and we should have the first samples by the end of this month. There was one more thing to do before August ended and that was to go and race in Turkey. I really enjoy Turkey, not only is the racing very nice but so is the area of Alacati, the food and especially the people. I have had good success in the past in Turkey, I generally really like the flat water and moderate winds but it is also a tough place to race. Starts are very critical here with a short run up to the line and a short first reach you really have to be on your game when getting of the line. This year when I first arrived there had not been a whole lot of wind for their season and nothing for two days before the event. But the day before the race started the wind came back and blew for the whole week, unfortunately for me it was not my best week by far. I did manage some good rounds and some good heats but I just could never put it together consistently enough. I am not sure what the issues were but it seemed like there were only a few guys who were consistently there and the rest of the fleet had their ups and downs. For the most part the winds were good, a few tough heats here and there with light winds but overall it was some of the best racing we have had in a long time. I had a great time, learned a ton but was really glad when it was finally over. Now back to Maui, can’t wait to get back and see the new TR’s and start getting all my cold weather stuff together for the next two events in Northern Europe. Micah Buzianis

AUGUST HOW YOU HAVE BEEN GONE BY SO FAST? Did I miss anything? Seems like I have been really active and that I forgot. After claiming a 6th & 14th position in Fuerteventura for freestyle/slalom I flew back home to spent just 2,5 weeks get myself ready for the next slalom event which was in Alacati. Getting back home, the wind was gone and we had light wind for most of the 2 weeks I have been there and I sure have been trying to do slalom sailing with the bigger TRX sails like 8.4 and 7.7 but there was days that the wind was just completely gone. So no sailing could be done. So to keep myself busy I got on the job to repair boards at one of the windsurf schools and this allowed me to earn some extra money. I just can’t go a day doing nothing. Fitness was a must, and as my personal trainer really put me on the plan for a full body work out 3 times a week. I know and feel I am getting stronger and more fit, while my weight is stable so that’s a positive thing. On the 24th I flew to Alacati together with Amado Vrieswijk to take part in the 4th PWA slalom world cup event. Arriving 1 day before the event, I felt good the first day out on the TRX 7.7 and was feeling fast and comfortable with the Starboard Isonic 117 and 44cm Zfin. But as the jet leg hits the body and I wasn’t eating breakfast and lunch the body quickly got weak, and so did the performance. I ended finishing the event in 28th position, my worst results ever in slalom. You lose some, you win some. but I really couldn’t focus.

Overall I had an okay month if I only could have been stronger mentally during Turkey it would have made my month so great, because I was really flying. The most happy thing of August was that I finally got my daughter on a windsurf board and she even held on to the boom. After Alacati I flew back to Holland for 3 days awaiting my flight to Poland for the PWA indoor event. So catch you all on the next one. Taty Frans NB-9 :)

AN AUGUST TO REMEMBER FOR BEING JUST PLAIN BUSY August is an odd month in the world. It seems like everyone else is totally on vacation... like they just all decided to get up and go together. We had wonderful visits from our old friends from Munich (all on vacation ) and they had more than enough good sailing to wear them out. This year the families came without kids though, because after al the years of visits, the kids finally had other things to do back home, so us ‘oldies’ got to have our own fun. Then there were the hurricanes. We had a string of them, three grouped right together, all headed right for us. Luckily, none of them made direct hits on Maui (the island of Hawaii was not so lucky though ). I spent several days renewing the Cornelia harbor mooring gear in preparation, and we spent a couple days on edge, waiting for the possible blasting. It messed up the windsurfing wind a bit, but did little damage aside from some large downed trees on the North shore. Earlier in the month, my kids were all here for their Grandmother’s 99th birthday and we were able to get out on Cornelia with only the ‘family’ as crew. Mom was able to climb aboard from the dock, up and over the bowsprit railings (and get off as well) and when she got aboard, she said, “This is the first day of my second childhood.” We are going to need a much larger boat next year when we can look forward to her 100th. I think she would go sailing every day if she could get us to do it. I continue to be consistently excited about the performances of Micah and Taty in the big races and contests. Totally outnumbered in the early rounds, they still have the speed and talent to get into the finishing rounds, and even though they are not ‘winning’ they are truly demonstrating the capability of Art’s good design and Phil’s testing with them. TR-11. or whatever it might be called is already in the works and getting plenty of testing so we can be ready for the registration deadline.

Our Experience, Your Reward

Finally, the last week of the month saw us spending lots of energy to get Cornelia ready for some more serious sailing across the channels, and then a haulout in Oahu, three years on the old bottom paint was enough. The trip over was relatively smooth and easy and everything looked good when she came out on the hard. Next month I can show you her new bottom and propeller. And we’ll have some story about the trip back to Maui. One final thing... Samantha managed to get “Dear Mom- The Bare Chronicles” on Kindle, complete with all the photos (they look better than in the printed book) and perfect format. So now, if you read the hard copy you can recommend it to friends who read on tablets. People are still occasionally buying the hard copies still, so this might get it out to more folks. I have strong feelings about the last chapters that promote commercial sailing vessels and I’m hoping some of that energy will find it’s way into real world service. We will need this some time soon. The oil is not going to last forever, and using it to make cargo ships cross oceans with plastic sails seems to make much more sense than burning it, gone forever. Aloha, Barry.

THE END OF SUMMER The end of summer brought us some excitement in terms of weather on Maui. A couple of major storms managed to get close enough to cause a rush on bottled water and flashlight sales. They also provided some variety to the usual summer trades and flat water. Early forecasts showing Hurricane Iselle coming close to Maui’s North shore and though it eventually got pushed a little south to the Big Island, it had us paying attention to the satellite images. After getting over concerns about potential property damage etc, my thoughts turned to whether we were going to receive any decent swell and wind. Hanging out with some visiting friends from Canada, at their rental place on the North shore, we had been watching the weather slowly move in and hoping that the Easterly swell would pick up enough to wrap the North Shore. It wasn’t until about 7:00pm that it started to look good enough to go out for a quick Evening session. No epic surf, but some entertaining short period East swell, moonlight and enough squally wind to be powered on a 4.2 Mutant. Dan got some waves surfing and later we compared it to a nice stormy day on the Great Lakes. The next storm Hurricane Julio, which was following a couple of days after Iselle, ended up shifting North of us and into a perfect swell producing location. Thanks to Julio we had about 3 days of fun NE to N swell, in the middle of August. Just enough to get excited for the approaching fall wave season.

Also exciting is that our 2015 sails will be arriving on Island around the middle of September. We have our most complete and refined range to date, including the brand new, “Epic 3 batten wave riding sail and additional sizes added to the high performance and versatile 4 batten Mutant wave sails. The ridiculously light and technically advanced Ghost CS, is also something that will surely induce drooling. The refined performance of the Legend and Loco Pro sail lines continues to set the standard by which all other wave and freestyle sails are judged. Look for these and other 2015 MauiSails arriving at your location soon. Aloha, Artur Szpunar
