A PREPARATION MONTH Beginning of March I came back in Guadeloupe after this nice trip in France where a got to discover snowboarding and did a video: Ride it all! Then i was supposed to come in Maui on the 22nd, but in between I had to organize all my contest season as I’m gonna do the PWA also this year. I also spent lot of time talking with "Orange", one of my sponsors, to see how could we continue together. On top of this my sister came with all her boyfriend’s family so I also tried to spend some time with them cause I see her only once a year. So I was pretty busy before I came but I found the time to go on the starboard tack spot with some little conditions, just perfect for the Mutant 4,6 and my biggest board. I enjoyed those sessions even if I had just a couple of them cause it gave the motivation right before coming here :) Now i’m gonna give my best while i’m in Maui... Aloha, Camille Juban

WHAT A GREAT MONTH MARCH HAS BEEN Good strong wind conditions hit the island of Bonaire and that made me sail on both the Loco pro 4.4 and 4.8 for 2 weeks straight. As many of the top PWA freestylers from Europe are on the island for their winter training it was serious biz and the level is really good, as all guys are pushing the free styling to the roof. Combining fitness with windsurfing for me is a must, I start to really feel good of combining these two together and I am feeling stronger on both the Upper & Lower body. With the wind being strong I had some days slalom sailing on my TR9 5.5 and my isonic 87 with a 32cm fin. It seems like I am really fast with this combo, even though I doubt we will be able to use these sizes this year. If I can use them then that will be such a great feeling. I have been testing the TR9 5.5 on both the SDM & RDM mast and still find the that the RDM 100% mast is best, I get faster acceleration and the power of the sails sits more forward this make the sail easy to handle in the gusts and you can push to go faster, which is always a plus. Last month my foot was not feeling that good because it got twisted, but sitting here writing you this Report, it feels way better. I can finally put pressure on it and I can finally start to do my freestyle moves on both tacks.

The last week of the month the wind had been light so no sailing and to me this was perfect to have some time in the gym and do some exercises for the foot and spend sometime with my daughter at the beach. I also had a small photo shoot with a Dutch photographer for a brochure. I think this will come out in late July. It was a great lifestyle shoot :). As we move into April, I just filled in the wildcard for the first PWA SLALOM event in KOREA, let’s see if I can get a confirmation. Keep updated thru out the month on my Facebook page @ www. facebook.com/TatyNB9 All the best, Taty Frans

FINALLY THE WIND CAME March turned out to be a pretty good month after all. It started out a bit slow but then it turned on, and even though we had a few slow days I got to sail all sizes of my new TRX from 6.6 to 9.3 and all of my new JP slalom boards. I had some really good tuning days and improved a lot on my setups and combinations for this years racing season. There has also been a lot of regular PWA racers here this year so we have had some good days running buoys at Kanaha and camp one, practicing starts and just running buoys as much as we can to get into racing shape. Nothing beats rounding buoys with some fast guys to push you hard and keep from slacking off. Normally there isn’t that many world cup guys here in Maui this time of year but it seems like it has become the spot to go again during the offseason for good wind and good training. The wind is usually always stronger here in Maui compared to what we race in on the world cup but I find it to be better training if you sail and practice in conditions that are more difficult than what you are used to racing in. We still do get plenty of days on bigger gear so testing and tuning gets done but it is always good to push yourself harder in training than what you find on the race course. Beyond this it was pretty much all business getting gear and body race ready, it seems like the older I get the more I really have to focus on tasks at hand and balance my responsibilities in order to maximize my time. It does help that

I have great support from Maui Sails and JP as well as my family and some good friends, this makes it easier to accomplish my goals in all aspects. I am however getting very antsy to get back out on the race course and put myself and my new gear to the true test, one more month to go I guess I can wait that long......... Aloha Micah Buzianis

March pretty much consumed me. At the beginning of the month we were told our house was sold. We knew it was coming, but didn’t expect it would only take two weeks. Fortunately we had made connections with the family that owns the house directly next door (they inherited it and no one lived there). Thanks to them, we now live there. This made moving my nearly 99 year old Mom reasonably easy and not too traumatic, but it also meant days and days of cleaning and fixing and shifting a bigger home into a much smaller one. It seemed we hauled endless loads of ’stuff’ those few hundred yards to the new place (in some cases I just threw things over the fence). Mom wasn’t happy about any of this. After all, she had just put up with being uprooted just two years ago from her beloved San Francisco home, and this was now all too much to handle without being a bit grumpy. But we did it and by March 31 we were safe in the new place. But that pressure pretty much put the lid on doing much else. I had managed to put the last of the main deck Raptor treatment on, and got Cornelia 95% back in one piece so we could take Mom out sailing. She loves this more than just about anything and despite her crippling back pain and struggle to walk easily, always says, "I can sit in the cockpit and watch. I don’t have to jump around!" So off we went with a good crew and finally had a restful day with perfect winds, just the right amount of sun, and finally some whales and wild rainbows. I hope it’s not the last time we get her out sailing but if that’s what turns out for whatever reason, March 30 was a magic day. We are surely blessed to still have her and Sam’s mom still with us. And still sailing too! Next month will be more exciting as the new wave sails will be in house for photos and final confirmation testing and race sails will be getting tuned for competition in May. As always, there is plenty of life looking forward. Aloha Barry Spanier

TRADE WINDS RETURNED Fortunately the trade winds returned for some solid sailing days in March after a very inconsistent winter. Just in time to give us some good wave sail testing opportunities. Recently, we’ve been getting some great days on the new 2015 Mutant ,Epic, Ghost and Legend prototypes. The 4 batten, ultra-compact Mutant has such a great combination of wind range, power and insane maneuverability. It is truly a sail that allows dedicated wave sailors to push the performance level up a notch. The Mutant just fits with the flow of wave sailing, laying down instantly for full drive bottom turns, projecting you to the lip with maximum speed and redirecting instantly whether you want to gauge, air or spin off the lip. This is the new standard for top level wave performance. The new 3 batten “Epic” has been a lot of fun to sail and complements our other sail lines well. It has a very light, quick and agile feel on the wave, encouraging you to try new moves. Our characteristic double vertical luff panels are perfectly adapted to correctly balancing the sail body tension in a 3 batten sail and the Epic holds its shape nicely throughout a wide wind range. I’ve seen a lot of 3 batten sails on the water that are folding in half due to poor tension resolution. We put a real emphasis on correct tension, and the balance and stability of the Epic is a testament to that. Anything less would not be worthy of the MauiSails brand name.

The 5 batten Legend and Ghost CS have proved their enormous wind range and effortless handling, being meticulously refined over many seasons. They have been tricked out this year with even more technical materials for lighter weight and better handling. The light weight of the Ghost CS is insane, with a 5.0 weighting the same or less than most 3.5’s. Often overlooked, is the fact that the Technora scrim used in the Ghost, is lighter, costs 3x as much and has fibres that are 3x as strong than the other commonly used “light weight” materials. We don’t like to mess around. Sail development aside, I managed to sneak away for a week with our 8 year old daughter Maja to visit grandma and partake in our other passion that involves snow. Fortunately, all the stormy weather that we’ve had on Maui lately worked to our benefit and followed us to BC in the form of a couple feet of snow. It’s a great feeling to see Maja progressing to where she was ripping through the trees and pow. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

I GOT MARRIED! This March was pretty typical for Maui, some fun days with good wind and waves, some not so fun days of spring rain and onshore winds, a lot of people in town for photoshoots, and, oh yea, I GOT MARRIED! On March 29th Sarah Delaunay and I paddled out at Thousand Peaks on the Southside with friends and family to tie the knot and it was the happiest day of my life. Coming from opposite sides of the Pacific, Sarah from New Caledonia and myself from LA, it was our passion for windsurfing that brought us to the ’middle’ ground here in Maui where we were able to meet. Now we both smile looking back at our lives and the decisions we’ve made that have brought us to Maui and together- which colleges we chose to go to, our initial ideas of jobs and career paths, what people said we should do, and ultimately taking that leap of faith and trying something a little different than everyone else, and pursuing our own dreams of a life and career based around windsurfing. And, as corny as it sounds to say, I know that without the support from my family, MauiSails, and a few crazy individuals (you know who you are), that Sarah and I being together in Maui wouldn’t have been possible. To paddle out on Saturday with family and friends, some of windsurfings’ legends and top pros who are our good friends, the feeling still leaves us speechless.

Our hope was to be able to sail on the day we got married, but unfortunately the wind didn’t cooperate. We did however get a few other solid days in March, and I had the opportunity to test the new Mutant and our first 3-batten sail! Both are working amazing, and have enough of a distinction to offer different performance depending on what you’re looking for! With Camille back in town it’s been fun to test the sails, and we are looking forward to hopefully a windier April to continue the wave development with Art and the Team!
