A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER! September was a month for the books in SoCal. South swell after south swell after south swell (oh there were more than 3!) combined with heat wave after heat wave and incredibly warm water temps made for one epic session after another for pretty much the entire month In LA. Leo Carrillo was on fire, and I had a blast sailing either my 4.6 or 5.1 Mutant, 2-3 days a week, only needing a wetsuit top. I love the Mutant’s for Leo Cariilo, the low-end grunt helps get me going when it’s a little lighter or gustier, as well as gives a little more ummmppphhh in your bottom turn when the wave gets a little mushy.

After an LA wedding reception for my family and friends I headed up to San Francisco for some Xensr work and a college buddies’ wedding, and was able to score a session at Waddell (albeit flat), and a nice schlog session at Crissy after being stuck in an office for far to long into the afternoon, and almost having to swim in! With tickets for Maui finally booked, Sarah and I are stoked to be heading back next month and moving into our new home in Kuau and kicking off the Maui season with the last stop of the AWT tour! DEAR MOM, THE BARE CHRONICLES THE BOOK IS AVAILABLE IN PAPERBACK FOR US$18.95 OR ON KINDLE FOR US$6.39. GET YOUR COPY TODAY! http://www.amazon.com/Dear-Mom-The-Bare-Chronicles-ebook/dp/B00MYSD4G8
Dear Mom, The Bare Chronicles is a documentation of letters sent to Barry Spanier’s mother. An adventure that began with Barry designing and building his boat, Seminole, while living in a shipping container in a San Francisco boatyard. When the boat was ready, Barry and his wife, Claudette, sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge for points south, a learn as you go experience. Adventures in Mexico and living with no money, led to Hawaii and a Maui lifestyle, enjoying the fruits of the yet popularized paradise. This comfortable existence is shattered when Barry’s wife of ten years, announces she is not going on to Tahiti with him. Their relationship is over. Traveling the South Pacific without his partner morphs into a wild ride through paradise with an interesting cast of characters. The South Pacific had enough rough edges to provide exhilaration and challenge. New Zealand offered steady work and a focus on getting ready to go to sea again, so after months of hard work, Seminole was ready to sail. In the middle of a New Zealand winter in 1978, Barry set sail with three friends. Two nights later, everything changed in an instant. His life, as he knew it, would never be the same again. Anyone passionate about windsurfing has known about Barry Spanier since 1980, through his association with innovation and development in the world of windsurfing and sailing. His designs have been used to set world speed records - and powered sailors to multiple World Championships. He is a partner in MauiSails (www.mauisails.com) and is featured in the Jonathan Weston film, “Wind Legends” (www.windflicks.com).

RECOVERY TIME! The first 2 weeks after the sergury in september were not the best time i’ve ever had, m’y shoulder was constantly painfull, i couldn’t really sleep and it’s so hard to do the « everyday’s stuff » whit one harm only. One week after the surgery i started to see one of my good friend in guadeloupe who is physiotherapist, i’m lucky because i get a special treatment bye having extra hours from him to recover my shoulder at the best. I felt it after the first week of physiotherapy so i took some time off and decided to cruse in « les saintes » witch is the second most beautiful bay in the world after Lang Co-Hue « vietnam » with one of my old friend who came to visit me for a week. Those couple days relax my body and my mind to now focus on organisation, relationship and sponsors for a project who will happen in guadeloupe that as never be done before. i’ll tell you more next month. Meanwhile i also organized a party at my place for a preview of a 52 min reportage from my longest wave record in peru, simon ploof video « the movie director did an amazing job, the 60 people passionate windsurfer who came were really happy and liked the movie. this motivated me to better for the futur!

Now, bye the end of september i feel good again physiquly and in my mind. We’ll see what’s gonna happen in the next month but it’s a good start. See you next month. Camille Juban

Back home to Maui after Turkey and it was time to get serious with the new TRXI testing. More samples and only a couple of weeks to get some testing done before heading off to Sylt for more PWA racing. As soon as I arrived back in Maui Art had some of the new samples and some recuts ready to go for testing, now all we needed was the wind. It was an unusually windless couple of weeks in Maui while I was home, it would have been good for Formula sail testing but we were focused on slalom sizes to get them done in time for the PWA deadline. We did have a couple of 9.3’s to test out and we had some very good conditions for this but the smaller sizes were tough. Phil and I did manage to finally have a couple of good sessions on some new 7.0’s and 7.7’s with some very nice improvements. The most noticeable change so far is a much better low end. Art did this with some changes in the shape and luff curve in the bottom. This gives the sail more depth which gives it more power. This added depth is also making the sails a lot more locked in down low which translates to more stability and an easier sail to handle at the top end. At the same time Art is making sure the sails aren’t becoming to stiff to keep that great ease of handling that the Maui Sails are so well known for. Not even the end of September yet and sails are already feeling better so things are looking very good for the new TRXI’s!!

After the two and a half short weeks on Maui it was back on the road to Sylt, Germany. I don’t remember exactly how many times I have been to Sylt but it must be close to around twenty, so I know the place pretty well and know it can be anything from hot, sunny and no wind to cold, rainy and super windy. Judging from the forecast it was looking to be very moderate wind and temps but I know better than to trust the forecast for Sylt which changes hourly. Registration was on the 26th and was supposed to be windy so the PWA decided to try and start the waves a day early since it was looking like maybe the only day for wind and waves for the whole event. Of course the forecast didn’t come thorough as expected and while they did start the waves the were only able to finish a few of the early round heats in marginal conditions. Day two looked like racing would be on and after a delay for the possibility of waves we finally went into some racing in light onshore winds. This had to be some of the toughest racing I have ever done as the wind was straight onshore with over head high shore break on big sails, 8.4 and big boards 80cm. It was very tough to get out as the wind was light in the shore break and with the long slalom fins and shallow sand banks off the beach it didn’t end well for everyone. Once on the course there were breaking waves everywhere and chop from all different directions making straight line control and gybing very tricky. I did not manage a very good first round and we were only able to finish seven heats of the second round before the wind died and we called it a day. The second day started out windy but before we could get a race started it died off and that is how we finished out the month of September, sitting around waiting for wind in Sylt, again. Forecast for the second week of the event was not looking to good either but in Sylt you never know what can happen. Aloha from Sylt! Micah Buzianis

POLAND INDOOR. SYLT. Wauw, how quickly days, weeks, montsh go. How we are already in the end of September? I think I have been traveling and competing more than Ii have been home but if you see how many events there ares this year on the PWA calendar it seems like a lot. Until now I have done all the freestyle/slalom and the amazing indoor event in Poland/ Warsaw. I am really grateful to have been at the Warsaw Poland indoor event, never been in such a indoor event where thousands of people gather to watch the best riders going off in one of the biggest indoor pool and with much more fans than ever put in a stadium. As far Equipment used I was my TRX 6.3 in both the slalom and Speed but still I knew if I had the Switch sail for the slalom I would be on the podium as the non camber sail in the pool would be a better choice. The Loco pro 4.8 is a great choice for each windsurf freestyler. I just love this sail. Getting back on Bonaire for just 14 days it felt good to eat great local food, and I had 3 days sailing with Amado Vrieswijk in the waves training the jumps. After that the wind just got lighter on Bonaire. I had 2 days sailing on my slalom gears and spent the rest of my days, repairing boards at the windsurf school and spending time in the fitness working mostly on the legs.

Best thing happen so far is that my daughter Gianna(4) finally had her first time on the windsurf board and holding on to the boom and just sailed away. Just that made my day. Well seems like I will have to take her windsurfing every weekend now. The 23rd the whole Bonaire team got on the flight to Hamburg and then took that 3 hour and 30 minutes train to Westerland Sylt. Arriving there was cold, wind was good enough to do freestyle but they pushed to do wave on the first day of the PWA Grandslam event which wasn’t a good idea but at least they finished some heats. One round of slalom was complete and I finished 5th due to having a bad start. no freestyle heat was completed yet but had to send this in. So catch you all on my next report “October” Taty Frans NB-9 :)
