Editorial

This album compiles the two chapters of ULTRABOY created up until 2018. The first, written and designed in 1982, was published in the only volume of the RobĂ´ Gigante (Giant Robot) magazine, through Grafipar Publisher. Because part of the original artwork was lost, it was not possible to restore them. Therefore, the pages were generated from the digitization and treatment from a printed copy of the original magazine and treated to look like vintage comics. At the time, number of Japanese series had already been shown on Brazilian TV, but manga was a treasure to be found only in stores in the neighborhood of Liberdade, in SĂŁo Paulo. It was imported in small quantities for the delight of Japanese immigrants and their descendants, those who have mastery over the ancestral language. Even so, the storytelling style was responsible for influencing a good handful of artists back then. The second chapter, despite having been written at the same time, took almost 40 years to be produced. Enough time for Japanese comics to not only enter the most massive way in the country, but to take in all generations of artists and readers around the world.

in the year 2082, marquito, a young musician, when saving the life of a gigantic space watcher, received from the creature the ultrapowers and the mission to protect our planet from alien threats. so, when in danger, marquito turns into...

the night catches the guys at the beach, enjoying marquito’s songs ...message in a bottle, yeah... beautiful!

cool!

nice!

bah!

rockin’, mate!

when an incandescent object crosses the sky.

everyone close your eyes and make a secret wish!

i just wanted to be alone here on the beach with lucy.

hee, hee, hee ...

bah! secret wishes ... shooting stars ... if i want a new motorbike i will have to annoy my father a whole month!

8

look! a shooting star! if only that handsome guy from the movie freedom appeared alone walking along the beach tomorrow morning...

a box full of mortadella and chokos sandwiches, yum yum...

huh?! shooting stars are meteors that cross space. this one fell into the sea ...

marquito observed well, because this is a radioactive meteor. lucky that fell on the bottom of the sea, no?!

lucky? the pulse of excessive radioactivity from the space rock, in front of a thousand-year-old underwater cave, can generate some surprises...

... like to awaken from the hibernation of millions of centuries some antediluvian creature...

... like this one!

and, by the comfortable fire pit on the beach... hey! what the next song i dedicate business is this? to lucy here! she’s with me!

come on, charlie! just because lucy is with you, it doesn’t stop me from liking her!

no one will serenade my girl in my face and keep a nose intact!

heavens! look at that! look!

9

it looks like fire is coming out of the sea! how crazy!

all of a sudden...

heavens! a gigantic monster! it... it’s breathing fire!

10

the bonfire will draw its attention! put it out! quickly!

i will keep drinking my beer... and no one will stop me even from burping!

everyone be silent! do not make any noise to not attract its attention!

charlie, please!

oh, mama ... oh, jesus!

however, nervousness puts...

oops! escaped!

run! let’s all go into the bushes!

... all...

...to lose!

help!

there! who told me to come to this camp?!

... and make the fig, my code sign to become...

out of the way!

i will take advantage of this rush to separate myself from the group...

11

that radioactive meteor certainly woke up this monster ... and if it reaches a city on the continent, it will be chaos ... because it must be about 200 meters high, like me!

i need to stop it at all costs! then... let’s go to war!

12

like a mocking mosquito, our giant hero zooms around the furious creature ...

i want to lure him away from the beach, where my friends are and can be harmed!

i will take advantage now that he is turning to attack!

13

because, for youto advance to the continent, you will need to pass me first... and i am tough nut!

oops! my bad, mate!

hey! we don’t need to run anymore! ultraboy came to our rescue!

hey, ugly! did you eat all your beans today? bloody hell! the beast is not soft! breathes fire and whips the tail at the same time!

zigzagging in the air, ultraboy gets rid of the the giant underwater creature fulminating attack...

come on, ultraboy! hit him hard! leave this naughty creature asking for surrender!

14

i want to get really close and hit him with a hard cross!

damn! it turned too fast! will hit me ...

holy moly! the monster took advantage that the ultraboy was too dizzy to grapple him with its tail!

the way he spins me around, i’ll be sick for a whole week, on a tea and cracker diet!

uhg! this is tighter than a bear hug! i’m going to pass out!

if this monster is giving ultraboy this beating, imagine what he can do with us !?

huh! he got tired of playing merry-go-crazy-round and threw the toy away!

good! i was already feeling like a chicken in the slaughterhouse! i just need to fall on a giant cactus to complete the jinx!

the creature, who seemed weak by letting go of its prey so helpless, demonstrates its true intention by opening its mouth ...

... and discharge violent jets of flame!

phew! if they weren’t my ultra-rays! damn... i’m still pretty dizzy! 15

after taking a deep breath, ultraboy returns to the charge, rehabilitated from the beating he endured...

damn it! i didn’t realize where i fell! almost crushed my friends! i need to get this monster out of here!

let’s see if you can handle my mistreatment, ugly!

i know this will consume most of my energy, but it’s a great solution ... how about if i increase your weight a thousand times, baby ?! the creature cannot resist and sinks into the sea ...

great! is going straight to an abyssal trench!

now, all i have to do is seal the opening with tons of rock ...

16

and so, the radioactive pellet ended up in the outer reaches of space ...

getting rid of the underwater creature, ultraboy sets out in search of what brought the monster to life ... that’s it! i’m talking about the radioactive meteor! and there was no need to look far, because ...

now, just pretend to be ultra-mcbriar and punt this giant and dangerous footy ...

my ultrasenses felt that there was radiation around here... and there it is! the meteor!

while our hero, showing off as usual, leaves the bottom of the sea in a spectacular flight...

it means i have a few minutes to go back to being a marquito, or i will fall into a temporary coma ...

i need twenty-four hours in human form, and my ultra-powers will be brand new...

hooray! everything solved in time! the light in my chest is already flashing ...

17

hidden in the woods, ultraboy returns to his irresponsible rocker identity ...

man! ultraboy was superb as always! but this is the closest i’ve been to danger!

haha ha! so cool! i’ve never enjoyed a bid like this!

i still get goosebumps even now!

i just ran a little more than you guys!

cut the crap, mate!

hey! where is our rocker? he must be like an ostrich, with his head stuck in the ground in fear!

there he is, hehehe!

you don’t fool anyone! tell us what you were really doing in the bush! hahaha!

cool! thinking like that, they will never ever connect me with my alter ego: ultraboy! 18

Franco de Rosa Born in 1956, Franco de Rosa started in comics in 1974, publishing small strips Chucrutz (humor) and CapitĂŁo Caatinga (adventure). In 1979, he produced comic books for a Zorro magazine and collaborated with the humor publication Klik, published through EBAL. In the 1980s, he worked with adult comics at Grafipar publishing company, in Curitiba, where he created Ultraboy. Later, already in SĂŁo Paulo, he did publish at Folha da Tarde newspaper, as a inhouse cartoonist and illustrator, then as a columnist for comics. He was the editor and author of the comics Maciota Press. In the 1990s, he worked at publishing company Nova Sampa as an author and editor. He cofounded the publishers Mythos and Opera Graphica and created an Editorial Kalaco in 2010. He won the Angelo Agostini Award in 1990, 1991 and 2010. As an editor, he received 7 times the HQ Mix Trophy, the most important comic book award in Brazil.

In 1982, the publisher company Grafipar, from Curítiba, Brazil, published a manga-style magazine about “mecha” (robot) called ROBÔ GIGANTE (Portuguese for Giant Robot). It was written by Claudio Seto with art by Watson Portela. Unfortunately, this endeavor had only a single volume. In the same edition, the first episode of ULTRABOY was published. A tribute by the comic book writer and editor FRANCO DE ROSA to the ULTRAMAN franchise, created back in the 1960’s by TSUBURAYA PRODUCTIONS. Up to 1982, the TV shows “Ultraman”, “Ultra Seven” and “Ultraman’s Return” had been shown in Brazilian TV. Three decades later, at the author’s invitation, artist MAURILIO DNA drew a second chapter. The script, which was hitherto lost in the drawers of its creator, narrate yet another adventure by Marquito, ULTRABOY’s secret identity, in his mission to defend the Earth from the alien invaders from the planet Ignotilus. It was a great pleasure for the team members to revive this unusual Brazilian hero. We hope that, when reading this album, you will have as much fun as we had doing it!
