Sli ing oors The seemingly invincible, seemingly immortal athletes we cheer and adore during the Olympics also came from humble beginnings. They were once puny mortals, too -- believe it or not. Only through supreme sacrifice and dedication, not to mention, God-given talent, enabled them to rise above their peers. Read on and discover where your favorite super-beings started their their long ardous trek to glory.
As a boy, Bruce Jenner had dyslexia and struggled in school. Instead of sulking, he turned to sports where he gained success. He won a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, scoring a world record-setting 8,634 points in the decathlon. After his win, a bystander handed him an American flag, which he enthusiastically grabbed for a victory lap, a gesture that has been repeated in Olympic games ever since.
Before They Were
Olympians
Michael Phelps has won 16 Olympic medals six gold and two bronze at Athens in 2004, and eight gold at Beijing in 2008. Suprisingly, at age seven, Phelps was still “a little scared to put his head underwater, so his instructors allowed him to Olympic skier Picabo Street, named float around on his back. Olympic medals and championships during her career.
Nancy Kerrigan often tagged along with her brothers while they played hockey, becoming a self-described “tomboy.” Kerrigan would face a tragic career setback very early on, when she was attacked and her kneecap and quadriceps tendon bruised. However, Kerrigan surprised critics and wowed fans with a silver medal win at the 1994 Winter Olympics, finishing second by 0.1 points.
Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team in his first try. However, Jordan, the ultimate competitor, persevered. Now, with 2 Olympic championship medals to his name, Jordan is considered one of the best basketball players ever. Michael Jordan dominated the sport from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s.
Jesse Owens was a frail child, often sick with chronic bronchial congestion and pneumonia. Still, at the young age of seven he was picking up to 100 pounds of cotton a day to help his family put food on the table. Owens flourished as an athelete, and in 1936 Owens won four gold medals at the Olympic Games in Berlin.
Born on May 28, 1971, Russian Ekaterina Gordeeva is not only a champion ice skater but also a symbol of grace, strength, and courage. Gordeeva’s parents both worked hard and traveled so much that Gordeeva and her sister, Maria, often stayed with their grandparents. Gordeeva’s grandmother read Grimm’s fairytales to Gordeeva, not knowing that’s how Gordeeva would later describe her life--like a fairytale. At four, too young to try out for ballet as her father had wanted, Gordeeva was invited for a skating tryout. By the time she turned five years old, Gordeeva was practicing four times a week. At age 11, Ekaterina Gordeeva (called Katia by her friends) became one of a pair -- a pair of “G’s” -- Gordeeva and Grinkov. In their 13 years of skating together, Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov became friends, fell in love, married, became parents, and won four World championships and two Olympic gold medals.

Are You A Carrot, An Egg, Or A Coffee Bean? “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

The Power of Digital Drawing
I never thought I’ll see the day, digital wizardry will match up with good old-fashioned drawing techniques. Although I am amazed at what digital painting softwares have achieved, I never really believed it can emulate how pencils and brushes interacts with paper and canvas. I have to admit, technology has finally caught up with us in terms of this medium. Our only saving glory? Well, it is still man that controls both medium. Ummm, Up to now, for the moment... Watch this time-lapsed video and be amazed and mesmerized.
thoughts
World-wide, almost 5 million die prematurely each year as a result of smoking.
STOP SMOKING. IT KILLS.
Take your hat of Murphy. He’s probably the greatest genius of the century. His law “If anything can go wrong, it will.” has proven to be true. Under any condition, in any place at any time. For example, why does it always rain on a that warm summer day when you plan to go out on a picnic or whenever you forgot to bring your raincoat. And when you do remember to bring an umbrella, the sun shines as if there is no tomorrow. There is no way to escape this course or curse as it may be. People have often objected to high heavens and cry “Why me?” and it sort of become somewhat of a paranoia already. And why not! Just when you are in the middle of an exam, suddenly you feel this urge to go to the restroom to relieve yourself. You run out of bond paper just when you need to type a very urgent and important report. The water suddenly runs out in the middle of a soapy bath. And why is it that when you are hurrying to go to someplace, the same route will take thrice as long due to unexpected traffic.
Murphy’s
Law
So stop being bitter and mad at such ridiculous situations for fear that a lot of other things may go wrong. Learn to smile or even laugh at yourself and surrender to your faithful fate. Dare not ask “What else can go wrong?” For there’s a million of other things that can go wrong. Murphy couldn’t have said it better. Call it logic, call it coincidence — call it anyway you want. But it’s the truth and it happens all the time. It’s a universal law where there are no exceptions. Murphy was right. And now he’s chuckling at all those people who doubt him and yet experience the traumas of his law. In any situations something will suddenly go wrong. As Murphy brilliantly theorized, “If anything can go wrong... it will!” Come to think of it, Murphy never had it so good.

Memorable Events That Shaped The Olympics
Nadia Comaneci: Montreal 1976
Romanian Nadia Comaneci, 4ft 11in and 14 years of age, broke the Soviet Union’s stranglehold on gymnastics when she won the women’s all-round title in Montreal. She will be remembered though for her performances in the team competition when she made Olympic history by receiving a perfect score of 10 for her performances on the uneven bars and then the beam. She was to score five more 10s during the Games, winning three gold medals, one silver and one bronze. She became the first person to be awarded the Olympic Order twice, the highest honour bestowed by the IOC.
United Korean Athletes: Sydney, 200 They were divided at the 38th parallel, but reunified in Sydney. It was probably only symbolic-perhaps even delusional, but when an event can bring two countries which are officially at war to march under the same flag, it gives the spectator an idea of the strength of the Olympic movement. A flag with the map of undivided Korea in blue over a white background was carried by Park Jung Chon, a North Korean judo coach and Chun Un Soon, a basketball player from South Korea while the band aptly played an emotional folk song. Same uniform, same flag, same song – it seemed for one fleeting moment in history, the two nations forgot the past and embraced the future.
Dan Jansen’s redemption: Lillehammer, Norway 1996
Dan Jansen, the speed skater who had promised so much, but had failed to deliver was competing in the 1000 meters finals at Lillehammer. It is his last chance at redemption. Four years earlier at the Calgary games, he had failed to make much of an impact after hearing the news of his sister Jane’s death. Call it what you willdestiny, an act of divine providence, whatever-he skated like never before, created a world record, and took home the gold. And if there is anything called poignancy in sport-it is this- Dan Jansen, holding his little girl and looking up to the heavens saying ‘This is for you, Jane.’
Muhammad Ali lights the Olympic flame: Atlanta 1996
At last he emerged from the background. A body weathered by Parkinson’s but the mind astute as ever. Shivering he lit the flame. No other sportsman in the history of sport had meant so much to so many as Muhammad Ali. For the dignity of the man was consummate – never relinquishing ideals for money or fame, Ali was the people’s champion – the underdog in sport and life. “They didn’t tell me who would light the flame, but when I saw it was you, I cried” said Bill Clinton. He wasn’t the only one.
Stephen Akhwari: Mexico 1968
A little known Tanzanian runner, John Stephen Akhwari entered the Olympic stadium – the last man to do so in the marathon contest. After a fall and carrying a dislocated knee, he hobbled up to the track amidst a thunderous applause by the crowd which was lucky enough to get a glimpse of this gallant champion. It was later written of his perseverance – ‘Today we have witnessed a young African runner who symbolizes the finest in the human spirit. A performance that gives true dignity to sport – a performance which lifts sports out of the category of grown men playing in games.’ When asked why he did not quit, he replied,’My country did not send me 5000 miles to start the race. They sent me 5000 miles to finish the race.’
Munich 1972: Black September
September 5, 1972, began with the Olympic village was being shut down when members of a Palestinian Black September group infiltrated the Olympic grounds. A security so porous that it had let eight Palestinian terrorists inside Apartment 1 of 31 Connollystrasse. Two Israeli team members were dead already and by the day's end another 10, as well as five terrorists. Incredibly, the Games resumed after 34 hours and a memorial service.
Kerri Strug : 1996 Olympics Atlanta
The United States women's gymnastics team was within striking distance of their first-ever team gold medal. Coached by the legendary Bela Karolyi, a Romanian who had coached Nadia Comaneci to gold before defecting to the U.S., the team finally stood a chance against stiff competition from Russia, Romania, and China. In the end, the U.S. gold medal dreams came down to one woman--Kerri Strug, who needed a high score on the vault to cement her team's victory. On her first attempt, Strug twisted her ankle. Undeterred, she insisted on taking her second attempt at the vault--and executed it perfectly despite landing on one leg, thus winning the gold for her team. She then collapsed in pain. At the medal ceremony, Karolyi carried her up to the podium to be with her teammates, an image that quickly became iconic.
Derek Redmond: Barcelona in 1992
The story of the United Kingdom's runner Derek Redmond has earned a memorable place in Olympics history. In 1988 in Seoul, Redmond was forced to withdraw from the 400 meters just 10 minutes before the race began due to an injured Achilles tendon. So in Barcelona in 1992, he was thirsting for a medal. As always, his father, Jim, was in the stands. They had agreed earlier that no matter what happened, Derek would finish the race. But in his semifinal heat, just as it seemed certain he would cruise to the final, Derek heard a pop in his right hamstring. He collapsed on the track in tears. But then he got up, and everyone realized he meant to finish. As he hobbled down the track in agony, his father rushed down from the stands, put his arm around his boy, and helped him to the finish line. Just short of it, Jim pulled back and let Derek cross by himself. The crowd rose to give Derek a standing ovation. This was a shining moment of heroism, and a testament to love between father and son.

his is a tricky question and we can’t blame you if you’ll be flusttered and befuddled by it. However, if you really are going out of your mind trying to determine the correct answer -- don’t be. The right answer is provided at the bottom. But just for the fun of it, try to answer the problem. Who knows, you might just crack it. Here’s the problem: The road to heaven splits into two. You are left to determine which road you will take to make it to heaven’s gate. Fortunately, there are two sentries manning each road for which you can ask direction. One road leads to heaven which is guarded by an angel, while the other road leads to hell and manned by a devilsent-guard. You are only allowed one question to ask both of them to know the right path. Seems easy enough, you might think. Unfortunately, you can’t distinguish the other guard from the other since the devil mimics the appearance of the angel. To complicate matters, although the angel will give you an honest answer, expect the devil to deceive you and tell you the opposite of what is true.
Your dilemma is this, what is the right question to ask both sentries to determine the right road to heaven?
GIVE UP? Where did the other guy (guard) came from?
Although there are other correct question (as you might argue) the most “correct” question to ask would be:
The angel will point in the direction of hell from which the devil naturally came from. The devil on the other hand, since it is wont to tell the opposite of what is true, will also point in the direction of hell, telling the lie that the angel came from hell. Hence, you can safely determine that the other path not pointed (or choosen) is the right road that leads to heaven.

Celebrity Athletes
Mark Harmon was a star athlete, but it also makes sense that he became a movie star since his mother, Elyse Knox, was a model and movie star in the ‘30s and ‘40s. It was destiny that Mark Harmon managed to do both, first as a star quarterback at UCLA and then as a star in NCIS, chasing bad guys and checking corpses. Truly, Mark Harmon is a trendsetter. George Bush Sr., enrolled at Yale, where he soon found himself the captain of the baseball team. A left-handed hitting first baseman, Bush, Sr. found himself leading his team into appearances in the first two College World Series. Not contented with leading his team, Bush ran and won the American presidency. Not bad, Mr. President.
George S. Patton, before he became a general was a bona fide Olympic athlete. And not just any athlete, but a pentathlete. He competed in five different events in one race. During the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Patton finished fifth overall in the Pentathlon. He placed 20th in shooting, 7th out of 37 in the 300 Meter freestyle swimming, 4th in fencing, 6th in the cross-country steeplechase, and 3rd in the 5 Kilometer footrace.
Lynn-Holly Johnson, a professional figure skater, placed second at the 1974 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She gave up competitive skating in 1977 to begin an acting career, making her film debut in Ice Castles, where she played a figure skater. The film, a romantic drama co-starring Robby Benson, was a success in December 1978. Johnson, who was described as "an appealing young woman who actually happens to be a good skater who can act" by film critic Roger Ebert, was nominated for a Golden Globe as "New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture - Female" for her performance in the film. Elsa Hosk, Swedish Victoria’s Secret model was once a professional basketball player in Sweden. Elsa Anna Sofie Hosk (born 7 November 1988) is a Swedish fashion model who has worked for a number of leading brands including Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Ungaro and Guess.[1][2] In 2011 she modeled for Victoria’s Secret, appearing in the brand’s annual fashion show.

eremy was born with a twisted body and a slow mind. At the age of 12 he was still in second grade, seemingly unable to learn. His teacher, Doris Miller, often became exasperated with him. He would squirm in his seat, drool, and make grunting noises. At other times, he spoke clearly and distinctly, as if a spot of light had penetrated the darkness of his brain. Most of the time, however, Jeremy just irritated his teacher. One day she called his parents and asked them to come in for a consultation. As the Forresters entered the empty classroom, Doris said to them, “Jeremy really belongs in a special school. It isn’t fair to him to be with younger children who don’t have learning problems. Why, there is a five year gap between his age and that of the other students.” Mrs. Forrester cried softly into a tissue, while her husband spoke.“Miss Miller,” he said, “there is no school of that kind nearby. It would be a terrible shock for Jeremy if we had to take him out of this school. We know he really likes it here.” Doris sat for a long time after they had left, staring at the
snow outside the window. Its coldness seemed to seep into her soul. She wanted to sympathize with the Forresters. After all, their only child had a terminal illness. But it wasn’t fair to keep him in her class. She had 18 other youngsters to teach, and Jeremy was a distraction. Furthermore, he would never learn to read and write. Why waste any more time trying? As she pondered the situation, guilt washed over her. Here I am she thought. Lord, please help me to be more patient with Jeremy. From that day on, she tried hard to ignore Jeremy’s noises and his blank stares.
She completely forgot about phoning Jeremy’s parents. The next morning, the children came to school, laughing and talking as they placed their eggs in the large wicker basket on Miss Miller’s desk. After they completed their math lesson, it was time to open the eggs. In the first egg, Doris found a flower. “Oh yes, a flower is certainly a sign of new life,” she said. “When plants peek through the ground, we know that spring is here.”
The next egg contained a plastic butterfly, which looked very real. Doris held it up. “We all Then one day, he limped to her desk, dragging know that a caterpillar changes and grows into his bad leg behind him. “I love you, Miss Milla beautiful butterfly. here was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. He was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods; but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for dinner. As he was walking back he saw Grandma’s pet duck. Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was shocked and grieved! In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile; only to see his sister watching! Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing. After lunch the next day Grandma said, “Sally, let’s wash the dishes” But Sally said, “Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen.” Then she whispered to
him, “Remember the duck?” So Johnny did the dishes. Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing and Grandma said, “I’m sorry but I need Sally to help make supper.” Sally just smiled and said, “Well that’s all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help” She whispered again , “Remember the duck?” So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help. After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally’s; he finally couldn’t stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, “Sweetheart, I know. You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you.”
The Duck & the Devil
Always remember, God is at the window! Thought for the day and every day thereafter? Whatever is in your past, whatever you have done... and the devil keeps throwing it up in your face (lying, cheating, debt, fear, bad habits, hatred, anger, bitterness, etc.)...whatever it is...You need to know that God was standing at the window and He saw the whole thing. He has seen your whole life. He wants you
to know that He loves you and that you are forgiven. He’s just wondering how long you will let the devil make a slave of you. The great thing about God is that when you ask for forgiveness; He not only forgives you, but He forgets. It is by God’s grace and mercy that we are saved.
When Jesus died on the cross; he was thinking of you!
Whatever...

Mouse Story
A
mouse looked through thecrack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.
“What food might this contain?” The mouse wondered - he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning.
One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a friend. “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a
grave concern to you but it is of no consequence to me.
was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.
I cannot be bothered by it.”
The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever.
The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The pig sympathized, but said, “I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.” The mouse turned to the cow and said,
Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock.
Each of us is a vital thread in another person’s tapestry; Our lives are woven together for a reason. “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”
To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died.
The cow said, “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.”
So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.
So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer’s mousetrap— alone.
The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.
That very night a sound was heard throughout the house — like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it
So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn’t concern you, remember — when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

rs. Jenkins comes to visit her son Anthony for dinner... who lives with a female roommate, Vikki. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn’t help but notice how pretty Anthony’s roommate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between the two, and this had only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Anthony and his roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom’s thoughts, Anthony volunteered, “I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Vikki and I are just roommates.” About a week later, Vikki came to Anthony saying, “Ever since your mother came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the silver sugar bowl. You don’t suppose she took it, do you?” “Well, I doubt it, but I’ll email her, just to be sure.” So he sat down and wrote: (This is cute)

Are You A Carrot, An Egg, Or A Coffee Bean?
A
young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last, ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me what do you see?” “Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied. She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. The daughter did and noted that they were soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hardboiled egg.
Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked. “What’s the point, mother?” Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity - boiling water - but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after be-
“When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?” ing subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed the water. “Which are you?” she asked her
daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?” Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate to another level? How do you handle Adversity?
Don’t tell GOD how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your GOD is!

group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all of their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, “Did you not hear us?” The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. This story teaches two lessons:
1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day. 2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill them. Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words....it is sometimes hard to understand that a encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage another.
