Spring is coming WELL, IT’S ALMOST SPRING. Ok, maybe
not, but by the time you read this, it will be closer.
With Spring, it means a whole new season of events; truly something for everyone’s driving style. Let’s start with Rallies. Yes, Rallies are back after nearly a two-year hiatus! We will, once again, be able to enjoy this way of driving friendships! If you have never been part of one, it’s a nice challenge. One, you learn how well you can (or cannot) follow directions, and two, how well you know your spouse or navigator is important, as it may just put your relationship to the test (LOL). HPDE will be back, bigger and better than ever, with a six-weekend line up. Check out mavpca.org for the full schedule and to register. PCA Club Racing kicks off at COTA at the “Carrera of the Americas” on February 24-25 and will repeat its “Texas Two Step” events at Eagles Canyon Raceway. The first race takes place May 25-26, followed by the second on October 12-13. Prefer an Off-Road Adventure? It’s the second annual “Pick Yer Tour Weekend” scheduled for April 12-14. This weekend offers four Texas Hill Country Tours, and
registration opens soon. Check our website for more. Do you enjoy spirited drives? Check out our Club Tours. The first kicks off on March 24 with a NEW drive for our All Member Party. The proceeds for our tours are given to the Maverick supported charity Wipe Out Kids Cancer. Speaking of party: registration is now open for our annual All Member Party + Tour, 3.24.24. It’s a NEW venue, menu, and location in Aubrey, TX. You won’t want to miss this annual big event! Are Maverick Happy Hours your thing? Tom and Lana have lots planned again this year, and it’s always a great time! Enjoy coffee while admiring the best Porsches our members drive? You are in luck, as our Coffee Meets Co-Chairs have some new venues this year. We all just enjoyed “Hey Cool Cars” in Dallas in January, and we are looking forward to the line-up as we enter our ninth year of this club favorite event.

Our Tech Co-Chairs partnered with our Maverick Women Behind the Wheel (MWBTW) CoChairs for the first Co-Ed Tech Session on February 9 at Porsche Grapevine. Our MWBTW continue to amaze us with unique opportunities for the ladies of the club to enjoy friendship and their Porsches! Ladies, if you haven’t joined the FB group, Maverick Women Behind the Wheel, do that right now before reading on.

Autocross your challenge? We have that too. Enjoy learning from some of the best? Also, be sure to register for our “Meet the Driver” events. January was a big hit with

FEATURE / Most Valuable Maverick
Introducing the Most Valuable Maverick
John and Chris Cuyler This year marks a change in our long-standing Mav of the Month award. For 2024, it is now the Most Valuable Maverick, aka MVM, and will be chosen bimonthly to align with Slipstream publication. So as our first Most Valuable Mavericks, we are proud to name John and Chris Cuyler as the recipients. John and Chris, as you know, are part of our Coffee Meets Team that puts on our monthly Mavs & Mochas. For the last two to three years, they have not only hauled our club tent each month
to the M&M locations, but also write the monthly recap for Slipstream. Many years ago, they were part of the Suncoast Region, in St Petersburg, FL. Later they were members of the San Diego Region, transferring to Maverick Region in November 2020. John and Chris take home a $100 Amazon gift card, courtesy of Autobahn Porsche. Please join us in congratulating them as our first Most Valuable Mavericks of 2024!

61st Anniversary Edition
Saturday, December 9, 2023 marked so many Maverick memorable moments as the club celebrated Founders’ Day and the 75th Anniversary of the Porsche brand. The morning kicked off at Nordstrom, NorthPark Center, with Mavs & Mochas showcasing Porsche Classic Years (1948-1973), including a 356 all tied in a bow ready to give Christmas cheer! 356 all in a bow

And that wasn’t all. Members enjoyed an awesome Carrera GT and all the cool GT3 colors including Racing Yellow, Shark Blue, Lava Orange, Guards Red, Python Green, Agate Grey, and more! Colorful 911s Plano Police at Toy Drive destination
By noon, all the People’s Choice Car Show participants were staged by their Maverick class banner at Grapevine Porsche. Their entrance fees raised $1,800 for our charity, Hope House, and they were treated to Donut NV mini donuts and coffee. Founders’ Day Family Affair participants enjoyed great tunes from our Maverick DJ Chris Fernandez and the Magic Hippie Bus while voting for their favorite cars by class. The party included Monkey Shoulder whiskey tastings, Cigars on 35 and Denton Cigar Co, craft beer from Deep Ellum Brewing Co, and more. Our PCA Juniors welcomed Bender the Balloon Artist and enjoyed lots of race track fun! And, did we mention we celebrated 75 years of Porsche with 75 lbs of Hutchins BBQ? It was definitely a Mav favorite for those who got there early, and for those who didn’t, Pizzeria Testa served up their woodfire pizza along with sangria and margaritas, making it a day full of food, fun, and friendships! What’s next? Learn more and register today for our MRPCA All Member Party on Sunday, March 24th at an all new venue, tour, and lunch at mavpca.regfox.com/all-member-2024.

THE
LUXURY LEADER
The 2023 James Shoffit
Maverick of the Year Award by Debi Kruder
IN DFW. SELLING MORE HOMES OVER $1 MILLION.
James Shoffit
The purpose of the James Shoffit Maverick of the Year Award is to acknowledge outstanding contributions to the Maverick Region and to inspire others to do likewise. This year’s award goes to a Maverick who wasn’t asked to do anything. This member just came to our Social Chair three years ago and said he had some ideas and some parts, and was humble about hidden talents. He asked if he could help with the annual Maverick Silent Auction benefiting Hope House. After contributing the first year, he didn’t stop – he kept imagining. The second year gained momentum, and in 2023, he yet again surprised us with his many 356 parts in various clocks, lamps, and more. Over the last three years, 42 Silent Auction items were sold all donated and most created by him with a total contribution to Hope House of over $6,000! Our most deserved Maverick winner of the 2023 James Shoffit Maverick of the Year Award goes to...Wes Pettinger! Congratulations on behalf of the Maverick Board and its members! The MRPCA Annual Silent Auction
Supporting Hope House by Debi Kruder
The Huffaker-Hughes Hope House is the charity supported by Maverick Region Porsche Club of America annually through our Silent Auction. Hope House exists to eliminate domestic violence through intervention, offering shelter, counseling, support and education to promote the healing of abusive relationships. The Maverick Region is proud to be a partner with this cause since 1993. This year, our members did not disappoint. Not only did they exceed our online Silent Auction goal of $13,000, they contributed nearly $4,500 through donations, additional merchandise purchased at Founders’ Day, and their participation in the Peoples’ Choice Car Show for a grand total of $18,000! But wait . . . after our President had selected Wes Pettinger as the James Shoffit Maverick Of The Year, he was surprised to learn that Wes and his wife Hedwig had written a personal check of $4,000 to this worthy cause! Congratulations Mavericks for a record year of giving to the Hope House with a grand total of over $22,000.

FEATURE / Maverick Women Behind the Wheel menu decorated each place setting. Servers poured three different teas paired with each course. Our first course consisted of a creamy chestnut and cranberry soup with a cheese wafer and toasted chestnut tea. Next, we were served a black currant citrus tea with the three-tiered servers full of tea sandwiches, such as creamed cucumber and smoked salmon mousse. Finally, they poured Earl Grey tea with the third course of bite-size holiday decorated delights, including tiramisu tartlets, chocolate espresso truffles, petit fours, and scones with jam and clotted cream.
MWBTW at A Woman's Garden at the Dallas Arboretum
Celebrating 2023 Events The Maverick Women Behind the Wheel drove into the coldweather months full-steam ahead. Amid everyone’s busy holiday schedules, we made the time to gather for some spectacular girl time. Nobody cared about the climate or how far we needed to drive. We finished 2023 with a stunning seasonal gathering in Dallas, a delicious holiday cookie exchange in Frisco, a special awards presentation at Founders' Day in Grapevine, and a meaningful afternoon at the Hope House in Weatherford.

A Woman’s Garden Tour and Holiday Tea Twenty-three ladies met on Sunday, November 19, at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden for a special guided tour of a hidden garden called A Woman’s Garden. Although intermittent rain fell, the sun peeked through at just the right time. We broke up into three groups, led by Pier Burgess and her fellow guides, Sarah Andry and Susan Banks. All are members of the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden and volunteer their time to care for this special garden. Opened in 1997, A Woman’s Garden is the only public garden in the United States conceived by women, funded by the efforts of women, and dedicated to the universal spirit of women. The Women’s Council, through fundraising efforts and donor generosity, solely funds the garden’s maintenance, development, and endowment. Our group experienced seven unique gardens in Phase l that are very symmetrical, controlled, and structured in character. These attributes depict reflection, strength, and intellectual growth of women. Phase II is a different experience with its soft, cool natural edges and a babbling stream. The gardens in this phase depict love, nurturing, and regeneration of life. Women visiting these gardens are encouraged to enjoy the beauty, take time to reflect, or simply take a pause to enjoy some quiet in their daily lives. After an hour of exploration, the rain returned making it a perfect time to visit the DeGolyer House – A rambling Spanish Colonial 12

Revival style home consisting of 13 rooms, seven baths, and five fireplaces. The DeGolyers were instrumental in the development of the Dallas Arboretum and of the Women’s Council and have a wonderful history. Of the rooms we viewed, each contained a magnificently decorated Christmas tree, over-the-top mantle sashes, and exquisitely laid out tables full of colorful nutcrackers. I didn’t count them, but Docent Susan Banks told our group more than 600 nutcrackers filled the house. Our tour ended in the DeGolyer Restaurant Tea Room featuring long tables covered with red tablecloths. A green cloth napkin, white tea service with jolly Christmas trees, and a three-course
You may wonder how these car-loving Maverick ladies had the opportunity to enjoy this Dallas wonder. In September, Pier approached Wendy Shoffit offering to host a group event. Pier has been a member of the Women’s Council since 2015 and is one of more than 500 members that support the garden. She currently serves as VP of Garden Projects. The Serenity Garden is a new garden in which she has a personal interest. It is in the design stages and may begin installation this coming year. Pier, and her husband Glenn, have been Maverick Region members since 2013. Pier invites women with interest in donating to or joining the Women’s Council to go to: WCDABG.org to learn about and support this magical Woman’s Garden. One can donate online or by check made out to WCDABG. Contact Pier at pburgess@burgess-inc.com for more information. 2nd Annual Holiday Cookie Swap Next, we headed north to Classic Wine in Frisco for the 2nd Annual Cookie Swap on Sunday, December 3. Featuring a roomlength counter of homemade sweets, partygoers donned their best holiday sweaters, Santa hats, reindeer ears, holiday blazers, and Christmas lights. Warm enough for shorts and a Hawaiian shirt that day, Hill Bullock did not disappoint. In fact, if we considered any of the guys for the best dressed award, a new PCA member just might have won! We gave away plenty of prizes that afternoon once everyone had an opportunity to grab a charcuterie plate from the fancy table set up by Social Bee Events. We presented door
prizes to eight lucky winners creatively selected using holiday charms encircling the stems of wine glasses. Six of the winners walked away with gift cards donated by Wendy Shoffit and Lisa Ward. New member Steve Purser created a custom cutting board that Cynthia Banish had the good luck to bring home. Angela James (in her reindeer ears and sweater) won the Best Dressed Award and a $100 gift card from Fifth Gear Automotive. Lastly, our committee of four struggled to pick one cookie (without tasting) for the Best-Looking Cookie Award. Michele Ward's unique cranberrypecan shortbread won it, and she received a bucket of detailing products donated by Andy Kay. All the attendees went home with a full tin of cookies to celebrate the holidays as intended. We not only thank everyone who provided door prizes or made delicious treats, but we thank Lisa Ward for her enthusiastic efforts in spearheading this event. Much gratitude also goes to those who dropped cash into our donation box for the Hope House or scanned the QR code to help meet our goal of providing much needed bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, and pillows to the women and children the Hope House aids in escaping domestic violence. Founders' Day The good times continued six days later at the Founders' Day afternoon event at Porsche Grapevine. Whether ladies showed up to show off their cars or enjoy the company of fellow Mavs, the sunny, cool day proved fun for all. Some of our ladies pitched in and helped Debi Kruder with whatever she needed to help the afternoon run smoothly, some picked up their silent auction treasures, and some came simply to enjoy lunch or vote for the cars participating in the car show. At the MWBTW table, we revealed new “merch” for our growing group and sold nearly all of our previous creations. This fall, we created a unique baseball jersey featuring contemporary line art representing several Porsches we women drive. Scott Kellogg took our idea and executed the art perfectly. We only printed 50, and they went quickly. If you didn’t get one before they sold out,
we’re considering tweaking the design and offering it in a short sleeve style for 2024. We hoped we would be surprising our Maverick Woman of the Year recipient, but while checking her Slipstream article online, she found our article naming her as the first woman to receive this award. Still, we enjoyed presenting Olga Taylor with a lovely glass memento and a $50 dining gift card to recognize her for countless volunteer hours, her service as board secretary, and for her efforts in encouraging women within our club. Congratulations Olga! Donation Drive to Hope House in Weatherford Last, but not least, it’s always fun to hop into someone’s brand new Porsche. On Sunday, December 17, Pat Gouldy and I jumped into Wendy Shoffit’s 2024 Frozen Blue Taycan in a Hurst parking lot and motored out to Weatherford. We met Belinda Bush at the Hope House when we pulled up. With great plans to engage the kids residing there in a few rounds of Christmas Bingo, we realized we couldn’t compete with the excitement they had just experienced when Santa visited their holiday party. Instead, we shifted gears and left the game and the prizes we purchased with Executive Director, Lisa Huffaker. We unpacked the member donations of towels and pillows from our completed Target wish list. That’s right, between August 30 and December 17, the Hope House received 72 sets of white towels, 72 sets of grey towels, and 15 pillows. Since Target was unable to ship pillows, we donated a $250 WalMart gift card so they could purchase pillows and other necessities locally, as needed. Thank you to all who generously donated to such a worthy cause. Save the Date Mark your calendars for a Ladies’ track date on September 29, 2024, at Eagles Canyon Raceway. More events are in the works for 2024. Keep an eye on our Facebook Page for details. By Joann Talty Photos by Maverick members Slipstream

utocross Events 9 and 10, hosted by Equipe Rapide, our autocross connection, wrapped up the 2023 Season at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie.
After a two-year hiatus, we will again be adding Gimmick Road Rallies to our schedule of events. Carey Spreen and I will be working together to make this happen. Initial plans are to schedule a Spring rally in April and a Fall rally in October, similar to timeframes used in the past.
Event 9 was a regular event, but event 10 was our annual Guns and Hoses Charity Event. MAVPCA donated $1,000 to this cause, and Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club added $5,000, for a total of $6,000 this year. Event 10 also featured seven 911 Turbos in Class P4 when Roger Briggs brought not only his son, Thomas, but three additional couples to come out for the day. Season-long trophy points battles were settled in these last two events, with Ed Mayo taking first in class PH, followed by Mark Schnoerr, Sigrid Schnoerr, and Julia Underwood. In Class P2, this year it was Carey Spreen, followed by Aaron Hutton, in the yearend trophies. Our annual awards banquet was held at Classic Wine in Frisco, where Ed Mayo also tied for the Andy Cost High Points Award, and Sigrid Schnoerr received an award for 3rd in women’s 2023 Performance Index. (Andy Cost is the longtime outgoing ER President for whom the High Points Award is named.)

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Gimmick Road Rallies, one of the best descriptions I have encountered is “a scenic drive with a purpose.” These are competitive events that do not involve speed, but, rather, observational and navigational skills. Teams (driver and navigator) are given a set of route instructions to follow. You will be asked to answer questions about or simply observe
and record objects along the route. Your chances of winning are totally dependent on your ability to follow the route and accurately answer the questions. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the scenery, test your skills, and most importantly, have lots of fun!! Details on our Spring ‘24 rally will be available soon. Additionally, if any of you have an interest in helping us with the planning and/or running of these events, please reach out to us. We’d also love to hear about some of your favorite roads and
destinations that we may be able to incorporate in future rally plans. Just email us at rally@mavpca.org.

John Halla Celebrating 50 Years Of Membership! Author’s note: I was prepared to interview John and post my notes in my own words, but he beat me to the punch and wrote his own autobiography as a Maverick. So here is his story, written in the first person and pretty much all his own words. –Carey Spreen
It all started after I moved back to Richardson from Austin in February 1973. I actually got the bug riding in a friend’s 1970 911T in Austin. It felt like it rode on rails compared to his American tin. So, somehow, I found a 911E at Economy Motors in Dallas on Lemmon Ave. I went to see a Targa, but was redirected to an orange hardtop 911E by Sid Chekai. One day in May 1973, the aforementioned car was parked in my driveway when fellow Maverick Steve Fallon pulled up in his red 1966 911S Targa and asked, “Are you going to the autocross the following weekend?” I don’t recall the details, but I eventually joined the club in August 1973 and did participate in my share of parking lot events. That was the beginning of a fifty year association with PCA and the Maverick Region. There was an array of movers and shakers in the club circa 1973, which would in some way form me as an aspirant, moving from novice beginner to a full-fledged member on the outer ring of the “inner circle.” Well, almost. As it turned out, Time Trials (onecar-at-a-time timed runs on a real racetrack) were more fun than autocross. Besides Steve Fallon, there were Mavericks Ed Mayo, Al Zim, Bob Pinkston, Scott Pinkston, Charlie Davis, Stan and Teri Mancil, Barry and Joan Gibbs, and Don Spaulding. A bit later they were joined by Jan Mayo, Alan and Linda Bambina, Bob and Suzy Blakewell, Steve Kent, Archie LeBron, and many, many others. When I joined the club, Leon Cowan was Region President, and his wife Pearl was very active in various club activities. Leon was instrumental in my becoming Region President in 1977. The following year, Roy Smalley was President. Milton Barley was a good fellow to know. Bill Fletcher was a stalwart member during my first three decades. I had the honor of knowing Roger Chaney, the Region’s local Technical guru, and absorbed lots of 911 knowledge from him. Jerry Sutton was a fellow engineer. Phil and Inez Wilson were Richardson neighbors, and their son Craig enjoyed driving his 914. Carey Spreen also had a nice 914 which he drove vigorously at Oak Hill Raceway, in East Texas near Henderson. It was a wonderful track. Bob Pinkston continues as a good friend and someone who has the best car control I’ve witnessed at a Time Trial. As to Top Time of Day (TTOD) at autocross events, Bob Horn was among the best IMHO, as was Steve Fallon. Bob’s wife Barbara could drive the wheels off their 356 Speedster. Tom Lang was a very competitive 18

in Colorado Springs, CO; Motor Sport Ranch in Cresson, Texas; World Speedway in College Station, Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth; and Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI. In the mid-late 1970s, there was an annual “tour” to Eureka Springs, Arkansas in November. The sight of 12-15 Porsches in an 85 mph conga line zipping up and down hills, through hairpin turns, connected by long straights was a thrill. A lot of 4th and 5th gear driving. This when 2.5 liter 911s were the top performers on those roads. Two-liter 914s were “Kings in the twisties.”

driver, and we once traded cars at Oak Hill, he in the 1970 911E, me in his 1972 911T. These cars were nearly equal, and we did fun runs to exhaustion. Art Bartholome from Ark-La-Tex Region taught me “the racing line” at Oak Hill. Bob Manske was the Maverick that originally arranged for us to drive there. In the 1970s and ‘80s, we had what Linda Bambina called “full up” dinner meetings, complete with a speaker and a presentation. Founders’ Day was a formal affair with lots of awards that lasted until midnight or later, and was a great place to socialize. In that era, Maverick was focused on Driving Events: Green Valley Race City; Oak Hill Raceway; Texas World Speedway; and the venerable Mineral Wells Airport facility. Oftentimes, there was a chance to meet folks from other regions at those “track events” in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Other tracks included Rattle Snake Raceway in Midland; Great Southwest in Fort Worth; Rocky Creek

While attending the 1977 San Diego Parade, I had the honor of meeting Ferry Porsche and his wife Dorothea. Altogether, I attended 16 Parades and met Peter and Wolfgang Porsche. At the 1992 San Diego Parade, I met Hans-Jürgen Bartnik, a citizen of Essen, West Germany, who invited me to visit him in the Fatherland. It was a great trip and included a long drive to Berlin in his 928 on the Autobahn. Another activity for gearheads was the War Bonnet Tech Sessions, which took place in Tulsa and later Oklahoma City. The factory often sent prominent engineers from Weissach, and we were able to meet famous Porsche engineers like Hans Metzger, Horst Marchart, and Helmut Bott. During these twoday seminars, lectures were given on various topics and models of Porsche. Presenters included Bruce Anderson, Chuck Stoddard, and reps from Robert Bosch, etc. I made three trips to the Stuttgart factory, including one trip to the R&D Center in Weissach, and rode in a 993 driven by a Porsche Test Engineer on the track in 1993. It was a real thrill ride. The car was rarely straight. In 1997, I added a 1989 944 Turbo to my stable. It has more cargo space and better A/C than the early 911. I had to take a hiatus from PCA in the early 2000s, but I have been able to start attending Mavs & Mochas and Motoring Mavs at Mayo’s, as well as tours, the All Member Parties, and Founders’ Day. I have met newer members and reestablished friendships with members from the 1970s. As Alan Bambina says, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

FEATURE / Coffee, Cars & Conversation
BK: Let’s talk cars now. What was your first “real” car? TG: That was a 1975 VW Dasher GT, silver with a black stripe

over a houndstooth interior. I have to say that car was great; I drove the wheels off of it (smiling). Funny, my dad gave me the car along with a Bentley VW Manual. What you need to know is that we didn’t take our cars to the shop (laughing). We repaired them ourselves in the garage. Matter of fact, he and I ran a little “shop” out of the garage repairing friends’ and neighbors’ cars.

BY NOW YOU KNOW HOW THIS WORKS. I meet someone over coffee and boom! We are friends. Well, hold on . . . coffee comes much later in this meet up. It just so happens, back in 2014, Jim Hirsch, then Slipstream Editor, asks me to become the Advertising Chair. Tom, in 2014, is just getting his feet wet and involved with the Tours. Fast forward to 2017, and we are both Board Chairs, as Tom is now the Tours Co-Chair. We spend the next three years seeing each other at meetings and events. Then, 2020 happens with two life-altering things. One, I become region President (laughing), and, two, COVID. With COVID, we go virtual, and Tom acts as host and moderator. Tom and his wife Beckie become Membership Co-Chairs. Then, we have coffee, and our friendship has been blooming ever since.
BK: So, what was your first Porsche? TG: That was in 2000, and it was a black-on-black 1976 914.
Tom with Alan Webber, father of Porsche Brand Ambassador and former F1 racer Mark Webber
BK: I understand you have had several P-Cars over the years since the 914? TG: (big smile) Oh yes! We have. I have I counted up 10 recently. My next was in 2002, with a 911SC Targa black on black. We, then, bought a 2000 Boxster. That was the first car Beckie and I bought together in 2013. From there we bought a 2006 Boxster, 1999 996, a 1980 911SC Targa, 2014 Cayenne, and, finally, our current three.
So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . .
BK: All of these cars, yet not a member till 2013? TG: Very true. It wasn’t until Beckie and I bought the Boxster in
Tom Gomer, member since 2013 Owner 2020 Macan, 2014 Cayenne Diesel, and 2009 997.2 Cab BILL KRUDER: So, where are you from? TOM GOMER: I was born in Pocatello, Idaho. It’s about 3.5 hours

story . . . that’s how we ended up being a “group leader,” followed by the Tours Co-Chair. As I recall, we head out on a Tour with Greg Dranow as our group leader. Well, we get lost (laughing), but, in Greg’s defense, this was before we had Garmins, so we were using paper notes. Our group pulled over, and Beckie and I figured out where we were and took the lead, finishing the route. Tom Martin heard about this and said, “you are a group leader!”
BK: Where did you spend your adolescent years? TG: During my teens, we lived in Porter. That is about 30-40
minutes northeast of Houston, right up US 69.
BK: And, when did you take the Tours over? TG: We followed Tom Martin, and I think it was 2017 and shared
BK: So, how and when did you end up in DFW? TG: When I graduated High School in 1984, I moved up here
BK: Have you lived here ever since? TG: No, after graduating and my first job, I was hired by Ericsson,
the Swedish networking and Telecommunications Company. I started with them in 1990, and in 1991, I moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada for two years. From there, they sent me to Detroit for another two years before moving me back to DFW. Specifically, we’ve lived in Sachse since 1995. I would spend the next 33 years with them before taking a retirement package in 2023. It was during my time in Montreal that my daughter, Rachael, was born. BK: Speaking of family, then when and how did you and Beckie, aka Dr. Gomer, meet? 22

What is kind of interesting is that I bought this off the Maverick website classifieds for $3000.
Beckie with the 2000 Boxster
TG: I had gotten divorced (this was some time ago) and then in
2010, I decided “what the heck” and signed up on “Match.” Beckie and I immediately hit it off, and we dated for two years, getting married in 2012.
BK: Speaking of Dr. Gomer, tell us how Gomer Hearing came about? TG: Beckie had gotten her Master’s and was now working on her Doctorate (AuD) while working in the “field.” So, it approached time to do her thesis, and we discussed doing a business plan on running her own practice. With that complete, we opened up Gomer Hearing Center in July 2016 with our first office in Richardson and our second, now open, in Allen.
that position with Mark Pitarresi.
BK: And how long have you both been our Membership Chairs? TG: I think that started in 2020. We followed Jim Hirsch
when you “Tom Sawyered” us (laughing) into taking the position. What has been amazing is our growth in the past four to five years, from 3,189 to 4,160 members. BK: Full disclosure (laughing.) I had no idea I shared this skill with the young Tom Sawyer.
With each and every one of these interviews I marvel at how a car, just a car, can bring our lives together . . . hence we call it DRIVING FRIENDSHIPS.

FEATURE / Mavs & Mochas
NorthPark Mall Meet ON A SLIGHTLY WARMER Founders’ Day edition of Mavs &
Mochas than years past, a group of 111 Porsches arrived bright and early for a day full of festivities. From the moment the first few cars rolled into the parking lot, you could feel the excitement for the day ahead including many of the familiar sentiments that Mavs are known for: giving, comradery, celebration, end of the year cheer, and, of course, a love of cars. Often at Mavs & Mochas, an extra special car will arrive. Suddenly, there is a buzz about the place, with conversation sparking from all different directions and a crowd gravitating to admire the car up close. This morning was no exception, but instead of one car, a pack of at least 10 GT cars in all of their colorful variations hummed and growled into the parking lot and lined up next to each other. It was a visually stunning display and an impressive show of engine excellence.
A rare look at a Carrera GT cockpit
The drivers parked themselves into groups with the red, white, and black GT4s on one side and facing the opposite side of GT3s with their exclusive colors: Python Green, Guards Red, Lava Orange, Shark Blue, and Racing Yellow. Drawing an especially large crowd was the red Carrera GT that perfectly captured the holiday excitement and celebration. It was on full display with its doors open and engine uncovered, and it had constant admirers for the duration of the morning. GT3s in Skittle colors
When the time was right, all of the GTs fired up their engines and pulled out of their parking spaces with perfect choreography. Many heads turned to catch one more glimpse and to admire all of them moving in unison as they pulled onto the street and accelerated . . . perhaps just a little spirited. Thanks to everyone who attended the Mavs & Mochas events in 2023! Please join us on any second Saturday of the month in 2024; there’s always a great variety of Porsches that attend, spanning many decades and models. Don’t forget to bring your canned goods on the middle month of each quarter (Feb, May, Aug, and Nov). Thanks to Co-Chairs Mike McHorse, John Cuyler, and Rishi Burke for all you do!

Renewing a Lost Relationship after 5 Years Apart LIKE MANY OF OUR MAVERICK REGION MEMBERS, I’ve been a lifelong auto enthusiast. My story is certainly not unique, but it was a first for me, so let’s start with a bit of enthusiast history.
Although I’ve been driving (legally) since 1969 and have owned 62 vehicles over those years, one thing I’ve never done is buy back one of my old cars. That changed this past June. In 2017, I was editing Slipstream for our club when we still included classified ads in the magazine. In August, one of our longtime members sent me an ad to sell his 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo, which he had purchased in 1993 following two previous owners in Texas. With my background of ownership of American muscle and pony cars, the long hood and short deck identified this 944 Turbo as a German pony car, so I was definitely interested! I called the owner that same afternoon, and after a few necessary items were repaired, I owned a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo and officially became a Porsche “enthusiast,” since I also owned a 981S. The 944 was originally purchased from Northwood Porsche+Audi in San Antonio on January 30, 1986. Special ordered in Copenhagen Blue, this became only my second car in a blue color.
Less than two dozen 1986 944 Turbos were imported to the U.S. in this one-year only Copenhagen Blue color.
Due to moving and an uncertain car parking situation in the fall of 2018, I sold the 944 Turbo. With better parking now, I decided this past June that maybe it was finally time for me to do one of the few things I had never done in 54 years of owning cars: purchase a car I had previously sold. Fortunately, the 944 Turbo had stayed local for the ensuing five years with its new Maverick owner, so I didn’t have to look far to repurchase it. As with most 37-year-old Porsches with 100,000 miles on the odometer, the PPI before my repurchase exposed a few maintenance issues that needed attention to get the 944 Turbo back into great driving condition. That reminded me that five years apart might require an investment well beyond the repurchase price!
Timing and balance shaft belts, rear axle boots and the oil cooler line are typical maintenance items on a 944 Turbo.
Fortunately, the technician and the shop that helped care for the 944 Turbo are still available and enthusiastic about my owning the car again. Making a list of the major needs followed my desire for a reliable driver that could bring back the 1980s automotive experience. Torn axle boots, along with a full transaxle service, leaking oil cooler lines, power steering reservoir and fuel injectors, rear hatch not opening, disintegrated hood insulation pads, new tires, alternator, timing and balance shaft belts/rollers, cracked intercooler elbows, along with leaking clutch master and slave cylinders, have filled these first six months with plenty of updates and repairs. There may have been a few smaller items addressed as well!
The previous Maverick owner has a son who is 11 and will want a cool ride for high school. However, with my history of buying and selling vehicles frequently, keeping it for him may be a stretch!

FEATURE / What's In The Garage
What's
IN THE GARAGE EDITOR’S NOTE: THIS IS A NEW FEATURE COVERING COLLECTIONS OF CARS, P-CAR COLLECTIBLES, AND EPHEMERA.
Those who attended our Tyler Get-Together in October 2022 enjoyed seeing Billy and Tisa Hibbs’ wonderful collection of cars. What was most impressive is that Billy has done much of the work on them himself, including two full restorations. Billy has amassed an equally impressive array of tools for his growing collection that is housed in two yellow Snap-On tool chests that cover a wall in his work rooms (and color match the nearby 1968 Fly Yellow Ferrari 275GTB/4). Hanging on the adjacent wall is a framed receipt for the first set of tools he purchased from Snap-On in 1984 for the then princely sum of $79.53, after he received his first bonus. While Billy had prior experience working on motorcycles and small motors, he dove into the hobby while working for a downtown Dallas bank, buying and restoring a 1965 Mercedes 230 SL (Pagoda) in his two-car attached garage. During the restoration process, Billy got married, and, fortunately, Tisa, his wife and partner in collecting, supported his passion. But, she may have had second thoughts when he tried to paint the car at home in their garage. Billy had mail-ordered a small booklet named “How to Paint Your Car at Home.” The idea was to use a large box fan, underneath the garage door (with each open side of the fan sealed with plastic sheeting), to pull the clean, filtered air from inside the house through an open door, into the garage and out through the fan, along with the over-spray. A few hours into his first paint job, Tisa returned home and ran into the garage asking Billy what was happening because there was a fine coating of primer on literally every surface inside the house. Billy didn’t realize he was painting on a hot, highpressure day in Dallas that was pushing all the overspray back into the house through the box fan. It was a long time before all the primer disappeared, but Billy correctly figured that if his marriage could survive that disaster, it could survive anything. After completing and enjoying the Pagoda SL, the bug bit again, and Billy did a 10-year nut-and-bolt restoration of a red 1966 Jaguar XKE Coupe, including the time to find the original motor. Billy did receive some occasional assistance with the work due to the time constraints of a growing family, and, having learned his lesson, he painted the car with a buddy in the friend’s garage this time. When the car won the JCNA National Concours Championship with a perfect 100-point score, the hobby became chronic, and many notable cars followed as a result of his Obsessive-Compulsive Automobile Restoration Disorder, a disease for which Billy claims there is no cure. The results can be seen in the many prestigious awards that are housed in a display case that is both wide and tall! 34

Billy's most expensive tool - centerlock nut for the 908
Billy and Tisa’s focus is ‘60s era sports and GT cars, with one from each manufacturer that represents the height of styling, engineering, and performance, all in a great color for that model. In response to a question about other collections he admires, Billy noted Bruce Meyers, Gene Ponder, Jay Leno, the Nethercutt collection, and the Petersen Museum. I think those collectors and curators must have had some of the same requirements in mind when acquiring cars. Billy has some insights on collecting that I want to share: • • •
• •
A collection will be better served if there is a central focus. In choosing a mechanic, find someone you like as a friend because you will be spending lots of time together. Attempt to purchase spare parts that are used and still working, or NOS when you can, because Chinese copies frequently fail, fit improperly, or have some slight difference that won’t pass scrutineering. Join the marque’s car club so you can get expert advice from other members and know where to find parts and information. It may take a year or more after a restoration is complete to discover and sort all drivability and performance issues, so be patient.
I hope you enjoyed this first installment, and I look forward to hearing from you about other collections you would like to see featured in future issues of Slipstream.

// 2024 Season Begins Now! A FEW WEEKS AGO WHILE I was browsing through my emails,
I came across an article that caught my attention, titled "Porsche Sets Itself High Goals for the 2024 Motorsport Season.” I'm not certain how most of you feel about the 2023 racing season and the results (or lack thereof) for Porsche, but my expectations were high and the results disappointing. I base my judgment on two of the biggest races (Le Mans and Daytona) in which Porsche didn't have a podium presence across any of the classes. I will say that as the season progressed, so did our brand - the 963 Team Penske took three victories and managed a top spot in the constructors’ title in the GTP class. All in the rear view mirror and on to 2024! To set the stage for the 2024 season, Porsche AG Chairman of the Executive Board Oliver Blume said in an article on newsroom. porsche.com, “Motorsport is at the core of the Porsche brand. The love for Porsche begins at the racetrack. We wouldn’t be Porsche if we didn’t learn from setbacks. We’re fierce fighters with great ambition and perseverance; that’s what sets us apart.” The article (http://tinyurl.com/yrus6p9z) goes on to outline the 2024 objectives across three major pillars. First and foremost will be taking on three championships across FIA WEC, IMSA, and Formula E. Leading the way at Le Mans and Daytona are top of mind as well as winning the FIA Formula E World Championship with four cars. The teams also reassessed the driver lineups across the three series and made changes to help optimize their podium chances. Secondly, the brand will continue to invest in the virtual SIM racing scene with The Porsche Coanda Esports Racing Team and the ESL R1 series. Third, a continued commitment to the Porsche customer teams across the globe competing in all the GT
series. New for 2024, Andretti Motorsports will field a Porsche in the IMSA GTD class. It’s time for a new year, and that brings unwavering optimism for multiple podiums and championship finishes for OUR Porsche Brand!

DEPARTMENT / Editors' Notes
Slipstream Changes for 2024
motorcar serv ces nc
Carey Spreen, Executive Editor
YOU MAY HAVE HEARD BY NOW that there
are some changes afoot for Slipstream this year. The biggest one is that Kurt Scaggs, our previous Editor, persevered for more than five years and has deservedly stepped down after creating dozens of beautifully-done magazines (officially they are “newsletters,” but many of us believe that that term falls short, at least for Maverick Region’s printed communications). Our many thanks go to Kurt, who brought Slipstream up to the current level of excellence that you now hold in your hands. Unfortunately we were unable to find a volunteer from Maverick Region who could commit to taking over the task of putting out six issues per year, so for the present we have hired a contractor, Brian Jones, to assemble Slipstream for us until we can locate a Maverick Region member who can take over. Since Brian is not a
Maverick Region member, or even a PCA member, I was tapped to take on the task of coordinating the content for each issue, getting it to Brian, and handling the other administrative details that are involved in getting each issue to you, our membership. Also new to the team is Maverick member Doug Jacobson, who will be performing the duty of Content Editor, checking grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. of each article before it gets placed into the magazine. Doug is introducing a new series, beginning in this issue, called “What’s In The Garage,” which will introduce various members’ Porsche collections and the garages in which they live (the cars, not the owners!). Both Doug and I can be reached at editor@mavpca.org, so if you have an article that you would like to submit, or if you just have a question, comment, or other

information for us, please use that email address, instead of our personal email addresses, so that we are both up to speed on anything that you send to us. We will be continuing our bimonthly publishing schedule from 2023 in an effort to try to break even with printing and mailing costs, which traditionally went into the red when we were publishing monthly issues. Yes, our quarterly rebates from PCA National covered those deficits, but ideally we’d like to have Slipstream pay for itself with advertising revenues so that the PCA rebates can be used elsewhere.

Meanwhile, we will try to maintain the current high standards for Slipstream, providing information about upcoming events, as well as recapping events for those who were not able to attend.
