Tours & Rallies

In case you didn’t already know, I was elected to be your new Vice President. I know I have some big shoes to fill following Carey Spreen, but with the help of our fantastic board members, I will figure it out.

After Co-Chairing our Tours for the past two years, it’s not going to be easy to walk away. I enjoy driving, so I will continue to be a group leader and continue to drive with you. We have an all new Tours team this year, co-led by Sam Bryant, Chris Chilton, and Arjay Cando. I will continue to help them any way I can.

Speaking of driving, I am excited to hear that we have a new Rallies team, with Bob DiRienzo at the helm. We will restart those events in the spring. The first rally will take place on Sunday, April 7. Not familiar with rallies? Imagine going on a scavenger hunt with your spouse as your navigator, and one of you still needs to pay attention to driving while the other gives directions. You wanna talk about back seat drivers, then come out and try a rally.

Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, you have heard all the great stories from the Hill Country Rallye. Although this is not a PCA event, there are lots of PCA members from around the country, and many Mavericks, who participate. If you attended HCR, then you got a preview of the roads that will be traveled during the 2024 Pick Yer Tour Weekend and the stellar accommodations at the YO Ranch Hotel in Kerrville.

If we haven’t already met in person, then I look forward to meeting you at one of our many events throughout the year.

Have fun, be kind, and keep Driving Friendships!

Most Valuable Maverick for April/May

Carey Spreen

Carey has been a PCA member for 45 years, 30 of those as a Maverick. (He has also been a member of San Diego Region, Hill Country Region, Golden Gate Region, and Oregon Region.) He was Maverick Region VP from 2020 through 2023, and picked up the role of Executive Editor of Slipstream for 2024 when Kurt Scaggs, the previous editor, deservedly stepped down after 5-1/2 years of service. He was Slipstream Editor from 2012–2014, and was also the Editor of Hill Country Horizons (1981-82) when he lived in Austin, so it's not his first time as a newsletter editor. Slipstream has made great strides since 2014, and Carey does

not have the time currently to lay out the magazine. Therefore, he is acting as the coordinator between our contributors and the designer that produces each issue.

Carey is also assisting our new Rally Chair, Bob DiRienzo, to resurrect our Rally program, which has been dormant for a couple of years. Carey was Maverick Region Rally Chair from 2009 through 2011, and still enjoys competing in local SCCA road rallies, as well as the TSD and Gimmick rallies held at the Porsche Parade every year.

Carey also took on the position of Region Historian after the previous Historian, the legendary Charlie Davis, passed away in 2019. He says that he is still trying to fill his shoes!

COTA Club Race

A small army of PCA Club Racers, HPDE drivers, and volunteers arrived at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) Friday evening, February 23, 2024. Everyone looked forward to a great weekend with PCA at COTA.

Friday’s load-in was delayed by a late Ferrari load-out, but registration, tech, and the orientation meeting ran smoothly at the offsite credential building in Lot R.

Saturday morning was cool and dry. COTA sprang to life with the sound of flat sixes firing up for a day of practice and qualifying.

Eighty-one race cars were hustled by the volunteer grid team to get everyone gridded for Practice 1. The racers settled in their cars, awaiting the out lap. Cars released; we were on track at COTA for the first time in four years. What a beautiful sight: 81 Porsche race cars on track getting up to speed.

Practice 1 had an open grid, so the cars weren’t sorted for relative times yet, which could make for an interesting session. Practice 2, onward would have the cars sorted by their relative speeds. The 81 racers in 26 classes worked together pretty well on track. The best aspect of multi-class racing is working through traffic while keeping your pace. So much fun! I could not wait for Sunday’s race starts! Let’s GO!

Sunday, race day! Another beautiful morning at COTA; cars were staged on the grid, waiting to release the beast. We began warming tires and brakes on the Sprint formation lap, setting up a good race start, and picking a lane into Turn 1. It was a heart-pounding blur of sound, movement, and colors into Turn 1. We were six-wide into Turn 1, funneling down to Turn 2, and sorting lanes into the esses; checking up to keep off the bumper ahead, checking right and checking left for a fast lane, GO, GO, GO! This is why we race!

Wow, COTA - what a fantastic track to race. Safe, beautiful, fast, and technical. I can’t wait for our next PCA Club Race at COTA!

MWBTW Pop-up Lunch at Legacy Hall

We dove into 2024 with indoor activities, beginning with a 10-woman lunch gathering at Legacy Hall in Plano on January 21. Finding a vacant, spacious lounge area on the second floor, we shared introductions and greetings before scattering to see what tempted us most among the lower-level food stalls.

Open since 2017, some visited this giant food court for the first time. Legacy Hall at Legacy West features more than 20 eateries, three floors of seating, an on-site craft brewery, and new table delivery service where one orders from an app and it magically arrives.

We spent a couple of hours catching up after the holidays and that short spell of freezing weather. We met new-to-our-group members and found some great dishes to try. Cuisines include Indian, ramen, tacos, BBQ, brisket, sushi, fried chicken, Shawarma, Philly cheesesteaks, pizza, burgers, vegan, Asian, seafood, and more. If dessert is your thing, one can find crepes, waffles, ice cream, and shaved ice. Their adult beverage selection impresses too. The craft brewery and taproom, Unlawful Assembly Brewing Company, is located on the third floor. Other options include Tonic Bar and Lounge, Bar Main, Good View Bar, and Vinotopia. Live music and an outdoor beer garden sat empty waiting for nice weather. While individual eatery hours may vary, Legacy Hall opens at 10 a.m. every day.

Co-Ed Tech Session at Porsche Grapevine

I met Liz Shafton, Communications and Experiential Marketing Director, at Porsche Grapevine at the 2023 Founder’s Day event. She told me their dealership would like to do something with the Maverick Women Behind the Wheel. We briefly spoke about a tech session, and I put her in contact with Pat Gouldy.

We settled on the evening of February 9 and partnered with Rob Turner and Michael Baynton to have a hands-on session. Promoted to women first, men and women filled the initial 40 slots and grew the interest to nearly 55.

Liz and her team put on a spectacular event. At least 40 participants began with beverages and a tasty selection of light bites. Lead valet Kimberly Benitez signed us in and moved about the crowd passing out tickets for a door prize. I introduced Service Manager Sharon Stanley, who explained the evening format in the shop, and then we split up into two groups. One group headed through the glass shop doors to the Macan and the other to the 911, receiving curriculum notes and pens as they entered.

While the evening’s topics started out basic, attendees shared with me that the format allowed everyone to walk away learning something new. The ability to circle the running cars or peer into them during the demonstration proved useful to cement the learning. For some, this was their first club event; a few others walked in as new Porsche owners.

The four main topics included tires, fluids, batteries, and service needs. Within each category, we had the opportunity to locate information (on the dash) and necessary items (in the fuse box, boot, or bonnet.) Pat Talty learned more about the flat repair kit: the valve sealant should be shrink-wrapped and include a new

valve and valve tool. And, it has an expiration date! Wendy Shoffit learned that she has a side compartment in her Macan’s cargo area that contains this kit. I asked an unrelated question afterwards about a loose grey cord that sometimes sticks out when I close my Boxster soft top. Greg Ward shared various explanations with his daughter, Lisa, as they drove home.

After nearly an hour in the shop, we returned to the showroom for last call and the special door prize presentation. Lucky Carl Motter won two tote bags filled with goodies: a leather bag containing a wheel detailing kit complete with sponge, cleaning solution, and multiple sized and shaped wheel brushes; two containers of coldtemperature windshield wiper fluids; interior glass and gauge cleaner; and a snow/ice scraper. Since he’s often amused by elderly European men smoking tiny cigarettes while wearing their “murses,” he put the leather cross-body bag on and posed for a photo in front of the 918.

We were all winners, though, as our hosts sent us home with gift bags featuring a boutique and service coupon and some useful logo items – a Porsche Grapevine key chain and pen, Porsche screen spray, and a palm-sized black Porsche floor mat. If you haven’t figured it out yet, the floormat is a beverage coaster.

Don’t Just Attend Porsche Parade...

...Be a Part of It!

The objective of a PCA Rally is to follow a course from point to point, usually on public roads, to the precise detail specified in the rules - it can be competitive or for fun. Competitive Time Speed Distance (TSD) Rallies dictate a certain time schedule for the checkpoints along the way. Gimmick Rallies, also competitive rallies, may include a Gimmick (Poker Rally, regional interest). New to Rallying? Parade is a great time to give it a try!

Equipe Rapide 2024 Challenge Cup

Event 1 of the 2024 autocross season, hosted by Equipe Rapide (our Autocross Connection), opened at the excellent Lone Star Park site in Grand Prairie. There were a record 167 entrants and 161 drivers participating, with 57 Novice Class and 25 National Caliber Expert Class drivers. The course was fast, taking 60 to 70 seconds to complete. The layout was challenging, but very fun to drive. In all, there were over 800 official timed runs!

Of the 15 Porsche entrants, cars ranged from 52 years old to brand new, with six drivers in various 911s, seven in Boxsters and Caymans, and two in 914s. Bryan and Lisa Bell brought their new 992 Carrera T and jumped right back into autocross after years of Club Racing. Joe Wilkinson drove his GT3 in the Expert class and put in some scorchingly fast times.

The next event is March 24 at Lone Star Park. You can find more details at www.autocross.com. The 2024 calendar will be posted on the website soon. Past results and registration can be found at autocross.com. Contact Mark Schnoerr for questions, classing information, or details at ax@mavpca.org!

Cleaning Your Car with Science

Getting prepared for a Concours is a big task, and a technical session on how to prepare for one is scheduled for April 6. One of the major tasks in preparing a car is ensuring it is clean. While many will wash and wax their car from the roof to the lug nuts, dry ice cleaning has become a popular method to remove unwanted materials (undercoating, mud, and other crud) and restore finishes. Another concern and one of the most common irritants of our wonderful cars is getting paint chips from rocks and other road debris. Both were covered in a Tech Session held last December.

When entering Revolutioniced Dry Ice Cleaning in McKinney, one notices several things. In the back corner, there are several enormous tanks and apparatus which power and pressurize the machinery. Several tubes run across the floor to a large box on wheels that is approximately 2’ x 4’ and 3’ tall. Protruding from the top of the machine is a hopper that receives and processes dry ice pellets, and the remainder is covered with dials and switches that control the pressure and speed at which the dry ice pellets are pulverized and spew from an additional set of tubes. At the end of the tubes are tips that can be changed to provide precise application of the dry ice. Due to its temperature of -109 degrees F, the dry ice instantly freezes whatever it contacts, causing it to flake and fall from the surface it covers. Therefore, the bay in which cars are treated has a moveable screen of clear vinyl curtains that hang from the ceiling and keep debris within that “chamber.”

While the process is often used to remove caked-up grease and mud from engines, transmissions, and suspension parts, the range of control and precision of the application can be dialed to allow it to be applied to restore worn Alcantara steering wheel wrap to like-new conditions. That level of precision is so versatile that it can be used to remove debris from a painted surface, eliminate surface rust from body parts, or clean the surface of a seat, all without damaging the paint or metal underneath, or the upholstery fabric or leather.

For those looking for a quick and painless way to remediate paint chips, Dr. Color Chip provides a matching paint in a small vial that

can be ordered by mail and applied in one’s own garage. Car detailer extraordinaire, Andy Kay demonstrated the simple application and removal of excess paint in a four step process to fill the gap left when a paint chip occurred.

1. Clean and prep the chipped areas.

2. Apply automotive touch up paint to the adjacent area.

3. Level the paint into the chip or scratch.

4. Blend away excess paint and seal the chip repair.

For smaller areas, the paint can be applied with a toothpick or match. Andy indicated it can be used for larger areas, such as the size of a quarter, or even an index card, if the person doing the application is skilled. If additional layers are needed, they can be applied to build up the chip fill to the same level. It will take 30 days for the paint to cure before buffing or applying a ceramic coating.

For those interested in entering the Concours or wishing to learn more about that level of preparation, be sure to attend the Tech Session at RAC Performance on April 6.

In the Zone

If you are new to PCA, you may not know what a Zone Representative is, or even what a Zone is. In order to adequately manage all 147 Regions across the country, the Regions are grouped geographically into Zones. Each Zone has a volunteer Representative to help facilitate communication between the Region presidents and PCA National. The Zone Representatives are advisors, mentors, sounding boards, and promoters for the Regions in their zones, and I was recently named Zone 5 Representative.

Zone 5 is made up of 12 Regions in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. A map of our area is available on our website at www. zone5.pca.org. The website serves as a conduit to the regions in our zone. We have a combined calendar so you can easily view scheduled events in other regions. Zone Reps are tasked with visiting each region in our zone at least once yearly. I am looking forward to making these trips and getting the chance to meet as many members as I can.

In February, I was part of the multi-regional (Maverick, Hill Country, and Lone Star) Club Race and HPDE event at COTA in Austin. It was a phenomenal event with over 200 combined Club Racers and HPDE drivers. A small, but dedicated, group of volunteers put in countless hours to make sure the event came off without a hitch. Many thanks to David Hodges, Irene Yuan, David Gross, Tim Strehl, George Hansen, and their teams for a job well done.

I also had the privilege of entering my Taycan into the Kemah Boardwalk Concours d’Elegance in March in the Lone Star Region. Chair Derek Robins and team put on a spectacular show of about 50 cars that was well attended. The following day, I was warmly

greeted by Danny Green, the GTG chair, at an event at the Alara Garage. Dozens of members were there to tour the garage and enjoy the pastries.

Lastly, Maverick Region once again hosted the Zone 5 Presidents’ meeting in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Centrally located, we had representatives from 11 of our 12 regions. National President Aaron Ambrosino joined us for the meeting on Saturday, March 9 to provide national news. We also provided lots of information to help presidents in their volunteer roles and gave all the members there an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with each other. Maverick Region provided multiple social opportunities and some fun on Saturday night. Thanks to Bill & Debi Kruder and Tom Gomer for their help. Also, thanks to Justin Husman (Phoenix Insurance) and Wyatt Gooden (The SimShop) for their sponsorship and support.

Hope to see you at an event in your region soon!

George Chaffee

Once again, a chance meeting brings us together. Most of you know by now that I am not a deep thinker, nor all that spiritual, but as I say, “God throws us together” for a reason. Recently, Debi and I decided to make a Friday drive to meet up with the Fort Worth Friday coffee group, a.k.a. FoWoPoCo. As we walked in, we got a warm welcome from the group, and Paul Mosely invited us to sit at his table along with another couple. So, for the next 90 minutes, we got to know George and Betsy. As we left, we made plans to have lunch in a couple of weeks along with Paul and his wife, Pixie. During lunch, it came out that George was about to have serious heart surgery.

Well, fast forward to today, and I am happy to report George is on the road to recovery. Keep in mind that he insisted we do the interview for this before the surgery because he would not be able to talk for a bit.

So here is the next installment in my series of “conversations.” I would like to share with you . . .

George Chaffee, Enthusiast since 1989, Member since 2018 Owner 2001 Boxster S

BILL KRUDER: So, where are you from?

GEORGE CHAFFEE: Born and raised in Fort Worth, near TCU, from 1944 until I left for college in 1962.

BK: And where did you go to college?

GC: I went to Texas Tech. “Guns Up”, as we say, with a degree in Journalism, graduating in 1966.

BK: Now, I hear there are two stories here. One, how you ended up at Tech. And two, how you picked Journalism.

GC: LOL, yes, there are. It goes back to cars. So, my dad, for my first car, acquired a 1959 MGA when I was a sophomore in high school. He was in the insurance business, and, let us just say, it needed work. We got the car road worthy, including a new paint job. So, two years later, I was ready for college, and he told me I could go to TCU, but without a car, or I could go to Tech and keep the car. Well, go Red Raiders, and I was off to Tech (smiling)!

Now, as far as the degree, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. One day, I was at my girlfriend’s, and her mother baked a cake. I went on and on about how good it was. Well, her mom said something to the effect “the cake was not particularly good, but I think he has a future in PR” (laughing). And that is how my degree followed.

BK: So, first job out of college?

GC: That was 1967, and I moved up to Sherman to work for the local newspaper, the Sherman Democrat, as a rookie reporter making $100 a week.

BK: When did your PR career begin?

GC: I was with the paper for about a year, until the Fall of 1968, when Southwestern Bell hired me and moved me to Oklahoma City.

BK: So, how long before you moved back to Texas?

GC: Boy, a long time. From OKC they moved us to the home office, 1970, in St. Louis. In 1972, they moved us to Tulsa, which was

truly my dream job. We were there for six years when, in 1978, I accepted a promotion to Topeka, KS, where we would stay for the next 17 years. So, the short answer (laughing), we moved back when I retired in 1995, moving to Lake Travis.

BK: Tell me about how you and Judy met?

GC: We met in 1964. She sat in front of me in our history class. All I could do was stare at her (laughing). I never even said “hi” for the longest time. Finally, a sorority sister of hers set us up. We dated for two years, then married in 1966. We have two kids. Harper, our son, was born in 1969. Our daughter, Maggie, was born in 1972. Judy and I were married for 45 years before her passing in 2011.

BK: Let’s talk cars now.

GC: My first was the 1959 MGA that I had for about four years. Then, in my third year at Tech, I had a ‘59 Beetle.

BK: First Porsche?

GC: That was a long time coming (laughing). That was in 1989, and it was a 1979 SC. Funny story. I had a friend who worked at the dealer, and I had said “if you ever get one that I can afford, let me know.” One day, I was there with him standing on the landing looking down at the cars. He said “you can afford that one.” Well, there are three. I asked, “which one?” He said the brown one. As they say, the rest is history. I bought the car, and we had it for five years. I sold it in 1994 at a garage sale for $17,500.

BK: So, your current car has a story, but it can’t be told without bringing in how you met your wife Betsy?

GC: Oh gosh (laughing), you are right indeed. Betsy and I met on MATCH in 2012. I wasn’t having much luck in the local area, so I expanded the search to include San Antonio, some 90 minutes away. We bantered back and forth, and, finally, I said “I want to come down and meet you.” Well, she told me she had her own

business, skincare and all, so leaving town wasn’t an option. So, not going to take no for an answer, I made an appointment for a facial (laughing).

BK: So how did that go?

GC: Early in our courtship, Betsy and I were texting each other. When I asked what she was doing, she said she was getting ready for work and listening to Yanni. I was not a fan, and I quickly changed the conversation. Later, I discovered Yanni would perform in concert in Austin on the eve of Betsy's birthday. It was our second date. Our first date was supposed to be a boat ride on Lake Travis. When we got to my boat, we discovered it was filthy. Betsy said she had some clothes she could wear for boat cleaning, so we took it out into the lake and cut the engine. I cleaned from the stern forward, and Betsy cleaned from the bow aft.

Fast forward, we got married six months later.

BK: Now the car part?

GC: Well, I have a friend who lives in Palo Alto, California, who had this beautiful green Boxster, and I told him that Betsy and I were getting married in Carmel. He said “Great. Come out, get the car, and drive to Carmel. When you are finished, just bring it back.” So, we did that. Well, three years later, we went back, bought the car, and drove it home to Texas.

BK: Now, we can’t end this conversation without talking about your near brush with fame.

GC: (smiling) Well, near brush might be exaggerating, but let’s go with it. In college, I played guitar. Well, I still do, or try (laughing). But, yes, there was a fellow musician, Henry John Deutschendorf, or “Dutch” as his friends called him. You might know him as John Denver. So, we were all at Tech together, and we joined Delta Tau Delta fraternity. John and I also joined the musical group called The Alpine Trio. I will say we knew instantly that John was going to be off to bigger and better things; he was that gifted.

A funny story was that our trio was booked to perform at the elementary school, and, as it turned out, only John and I appeared. We performed as a duet, and, as I recall, the principal was not happy that he got short changed from the trio he booked. You must wonder if he ever figured out it was John Denver!

Well as John Denver sang “Take me Home, Country Road,” we Mavericks say, “Driving Friendships!”: https://shorturl.at/jmLZ1

Amelia Island

Each year, during the first weekend in March, a gathering occurs on Amelia Island to showcase the rare and beautiful world of the automobile. These automobiles are bought, sold, paraded, displayed, and judged throughout various events on the Island. For a Porsche enthusiast, this is a time to see all of the best the marque has to offer, starting with the PCA Werks Reunion on Friday morning, and through the Sunday-held Amelia Island Concours, which features various Porsche categories annually. This year was no different. Despite the on and off rain all three days, the events experienced recordsetting attendance. It was again, truly remarkable. Here are just a few images from the weekend. Enjoy!

Repairing an “Unexpected Feature” on your Porsche 981/991

It seems that quite a few of our Porsche models come with what I call “unexpected features.” Unfortunately, these “features” often raise their ugly heads once our Porsches are out of warranty and can come with a substantial cost to repair. From the early days of head studs that would leave the party on their own, to oil and coolant finding innovative ways of leaving the engine, to IMS bearings, bore scoring, connecting rod bolts loosening on a 9,000 rpm engine, to the focus of this article: interior door panel delamination. These are all examples of our Porsche “unexpected features.”

This “feature” of interior door panel delamination seems to occur most often in the 981/718 and 991/992 series of Porsches without full leather interiors. The culprit that allows for this delamination has been identified as the use of a new adhesive beginning with the 981/991 models. There is little agreement as to how to keep delamination from occurring. Some cars experience it while still under warranty, while others, like our 2014 Boxster S, went for nine years and 68,000 miles before the driver side door panel started to separate.

With new replacement door panels ranging in cost from $1,250 to almost $3,000 each, depending on color and material (for example, ours is two-tone with leather inserts), any out-of-warranty fix is an expensive proposition. Unfortunately, some owners have experienced the same “feature” occurring on their replacement panels, too!

DIY repairs on this issue have, typically, not gone well. Lack of experience in door panel construction, along with lack of knowledge of appropriate adhesives and necessary preparation, has made many DIY efforts short-lived in practice.

Pedro’s Garage (https://www.pedrosgarage.com/) in Florida has become the default option for many of these repairs. Consistent customer satisfaction with their work has made the $300 per panel cost, plus shipping the panels to Florida, worth the effort to many owners who experienced this “feature”.

In my case, I thought this repair was something that a local interior craftsman should be able to complete successfully. It certainly would be more convenient than removing and shipping the panel to Florida, and, perhaps, even less expensive.

I happened to meet one of those interior craftsmen located in a shop on the well-known Tarpley Road in Carrollton, a literal mecca of quality auto repair shops. Ian Adame is the owner and operator of IA Designs and has been repairing these door panels for some time. He explained in detail the repair process he uses. More interesting and impressive were the number of complete Porsche interior restoration services and projects that Ian has performed. Like I said, finding a true craftsman was the key!

My story was a successful repair as you can see from the photo. If you’re in need of this repair, or any interior upholstery project, you can contact Ian at (817) 793-8249, or iadesigns.us@gmail.com and IG as @eye_sew to see more of his impressive interior work. I’ve certainly got some future projects in mind for Ian!

What's

IN THE GARAGE

One of the challenges of car ownership and building a collection is finding reliable trades to make repairs or improvements to your car. Fortunately, Tyler Junior College (TJC) is training the next generation of technicians, and the Maverick Region, along with Park Place Porsche, recently donated funds to a scholarship for automotive technology students at TJC.

On Saturday, February 24, nearly forty D/FW area members travelled to Tyler to join Tyler area members and Porsche owners for a ceremony in which ceremonial checks were presented to the TJC automotive technology student scholarship fund. The money was collected from the registration fees at two events held in Tyler in the last year. They were matched by the Maverick Region, as were additional donations which brought the tally up to $8,000. During a conversation between the author and Patrick Huston, Park Place Porsche General Manger, Mr. Huston eagerly pledged an additional $2,000 to bring the total donation to $10,000.

The ceremony took place in the Automotive Technology Center located in the TJC West Skills Training Center. Prior to the ceremony, an Open House was held in which attendees were treated to a continental breakfast and a tour of the facility and were able to talk with faculty and students. With the backdrop of Billy and Tisa Hibbs’ street legal Porsche 908 race car that was driven by “Quick Vic” Elford, TJC President and Chief Executive Officer Juan Mejia provided remarks about the history of TJC and the automotive technology program, which is one of the country’s oldest. He also mentioned the approach of TJC’s Centennial Anniversary and

how TJC’s endowment has grown to be the second highest of all two-year institutions in the nation. The endowment has helped to ensure that the education and facilities are of the highest caliber. Maverick President Bill Kruder’s mentioned the vast expanse of the Region and the events that have been held in the Tyler area to hold club events in the eastern portion of the Region. Park Place Shop Foreman Austin Veca then lauded the training of technicians that will be available to carry out Park Place’s mission of providing excellence in its service and maintenance of Porsche vehicles. The replica checks were presented, and photographs were taken, followed by additional tours of the facilities.

After the ceremony and tours concluded, the proceedings moved to the car collection housed in Le Auto Grange. TJC treated participants with a catered lunch of hamburgers and cheeseburgers from Jucys Hamburgers. After saying a blessing over the food, Billy Hibbs described to the group some of the other cars in his collection, including one that was recently acquired and one that returned from a complete restoration. He gave a full tour to those who wished to learn more in-depth details of the cars. Others assembled to test their skills on a racing simulator, competing in a Porsche GT3 on the track at Watkins Glen. Reese Riddle smoked everyone with his fastest time and was treated to ride with Billy Hibbs in the 908. And, of course, attendees were able to view and enjoy the vast collection of posters and other memorabilia on display in the beautifully designed building designed in the style of a French barn.

The events provided another opportunity to get members together from throughout the Region. New friendships were made and others were reacquainted. But, most importantly, many pledged their support to provide additional funds for the automotive technology scholarships. Jason Hart

It’s no secret that for those who are fortunate enough to have a successful career as a professional driver in motorsports, it takes money (lots of money), perhaps family heritage, a little luck, and definitely hard work. It’s the latter that purely defines Jason Hart, our January “Meet The Driver,” sponsored by The Phoenix Insurance. A fellow racer labeled Jason as “the hardest working guy in the sport,” and if you were fortunate enough to hear his story on a bitterly cold January evening, you’d be hard-pressed to disagree!

As a husband and father, Jason spends roughly 200+ days a year at the track – whether he’s testing, racing, or coaching, his focus is on competing and winning. In fact, as of writing this article, Jason has started in 154 races throughout his career. What’s incredible is he’s won over 20% of those races and been on the podium almost 40% of the time! And we’re talking big time races: 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona, and Dubai, along with many other circuits around the globe.

As a youngster, Jason tinkered with his father on cars, trucks, boats, and anything else that had a motor. Growing up in Compton, CA, he was forced to learn the true meaning of hard work. As a teenager, Jason took various jobs in shops to help support his passion for golf and drag racing his Chevy S10 pickup truck. Upon graduating from high school, he came to a fork in the road, whereby one path was to attend college with a golf scholarship (btw- he was a 2-handicap in high school), with the other path being to pursue his true passion of becoming a professional racecar driver. Off to Arizona and Bondurant School of Racing he went serving as an entry-level mechanic and a “do-it-all” shop rat. Each day after closing, Jason was able to refine his driving skills by jumping on track with the school’s racecars. It was at Bondurant where he worked and raced with Buddy Rice (2004 Indy 500 Winner) and he credits this period in his life as key to his development as a professional racer.

When I posed the question to Jason about his driving hero, he humbly informed the audience as to what his definition of a hero is: “To me a hero is paying the ultimate respect to all of those men and women who are serving, or have served our country.” His father was a highly-decorated Marine, and there was a point in Jason’s life where he contemplated following in his footsteps. From a driver’s perspective, he possesses a high admiration for Tony Stewart because “Tony can race anything – put him in Sprint, Indy, NASCAR, and he’ll win.” When asked to describe his own racing “style,” Jason explained that he is an “engineered-learned driver” with an exuberant desire to fully understand all of the variables that go into car set-up/handling.

As he described the different race cars he’s experienced (Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, BMW, Audi, Mini Cooper, Honda, etc.) Jason credited Porsche as the manufacturer from which a driver can achieve “the most rewarding performance,” with the caveat of also

being “the most challenging manufacturer to get performance from.” Daytona and Watkins Glen are two of his favorite circuits; however Jason says it’s Le Mans that exposes a driver to the most challenging of conditions. He went on to describe portions of the course where "it’s like you are racing into a black canvas and knowing that, in order to compete, you can’t lift." "As a pro racer, you can’t think of or fear death because 100% of your focus has to not only be on your current surroundings but also what lies ahead." Jason’s results to date leave no doubt that he’s figured out the mastery of being a professional driver. His mantra “maximize the tools you’ve been given, give 100% everyday, and never quit what you have a passion for” seems like a great formula for success!

Thank you Jason for your inspiration!!

Slipstream Changes Continued!

You probably noticed that the February/ March edition of Slipstream arrived in late February instead of early February. We on the Slipstream team were just as disappointed and frustrated (perhaps even a bit more) as you were to receive it so late in the month. It is not our intent to assign blame for the late delivery, just to ask your forgiveness and patience as we work through our new process.

In an effort to get back on track with delivery date by the first of the month, we have moved up our content submission deadline to the first of the month preceding the month of publication; for example, for the issue you are holding in your hands (April/May), the deadline was March 1. This gave us a nine-day head start to get the magazine laid out, proofed, sent to the printer, proofed again, printed, sent to

the mailing house, and, finally, sent to the USPS for mailing. I hope that I’m not going out on a limb by predicting that this issue arrived in your mailbox very close to April 1, if not on that exact date - sort of a reverse April Fools scenario, where the joke is on . . . no one at all. If not, we will continue to look for processes in the workflow where we can save time. Anyway, enough groveling for now!

We appreciate the positive comments that we have received so far about Slipstream’s refreshed look! We want to make sure you know that most of the credit for the new look goes to Brian Jones. Brian is responsible for the overall layout of Slipstream, and he is doing a fantastic job with it.

Having said that, and with all due respect to Brian, we would love to return to

having Slipstream put together entirely by Maverick Region members. As of this writing, our total membership, including primary and affiliate members, is 4,076, which is approximately (PCA doesn’t readily share membership numbers across regions) the third largest region in PCA, including the US and Canada. Odds are that there is someone out there in Maverick country who has the experience, skills, time, and motivation to move into the Slipstream Editor role; we just need to identify her, him, or them! If you would like to learn more about the position, please send an email to editor@mavpca.org to start a discussion.

Anyway, thanks for reading! We hope to see you at a Maverick event soon!
