Board Botschaft: Colors, colors and more colors

Amongst the seemingly endless sea of silver, white and black cars on the road, Porsche has historically produced a vast variety of more interesting colors on its cars. Yellows, blues, greens, oranges, purples, browns, just to name a few…….and a virtual cornucopia of variations of those shades.

Rennbow contains a massive database of Porsche exterior colors, searchable by color, model and year. Per the rennbow website, rennbow.org : “We judge rarity on a one to five scale, (in the purely subjective opinions of our editors). Five paint cans indicate the rarest of the rare, the unicorn colors. One paint can is reserved for the most common colors. 2-4 are somewhere in between.”

Colors rated as 1 paint can include: Guards Red, Black, Seal Gray metallic. My 1980 928 is Guards Red.

Colors rated as 2 paint cans include: Racing Yellow, Sepia Brown, Night Blue metallic. The 2017 Macan GTS shown here is Night Blue Metallic, not to be confused with the earlier Midnight Blue Metallic.

Colors rated as 3 paint cans include: Speed Yellow, Macadamia metallic, Zinnmetallic, Arena Red. The 2008 Carrera cabriolet shown here is Macadamia metallic, offered on the 911 from 2006-2012 and 2015, Boxster/Cayman 2008-2012, and Cayenne in 2009 only.

Colors rated as 4 paint cans include: Fayence Yellow (mostly a Carrera GT color), Nutmeg Brown metallic, Turquoise metallic. This 1996 Carrera targa is Turquoise metallic.

Colors rated as the rarest of the rare, 5 paint cans, include: Ferrari Yellow (yes this was an actual color offered on the 911 in 1992, 1993, and 1995), Fountain Blue metallic (offered on the 911 in 2005-2007), and Wimbledon Green metallic.

Let’s talk about yellow. Rennbow has 29 different shades of yellow in its database. 26 of these include

images of the shade on an actual Porsche, but 3 do not. If you happen to own one of the following: Atacoma Yellow (PTS ’23), Jonquil Yellow (20072009 911), or Yellow Matte (2009 911), click on over to rennbow.org and submit a photo of your car to be included for posterity.

And let’s not forget about all the wonderful shades of brown: a total of 42 different shades of brown. Among those still lacking images of the color on an actual Porsche include: Chestnut Metallic (2006 911),

Havana Brown (1981-82 924), Roman Bronze metallic (2005 911), Saturn metallic (1981 924), Sepia metallic (2007 911), Toffee Brown metallic (2013-16 Panamera).

Post your photos of your colorful Porsches on Rennbow today!

July: Doug Jacobson

Doug Jacobson joined our club about five years ago, in 2018. What’s interesting is that another 300plus people joined our club back then. What makes Doug special is that, from day one, Doug asked “What can I do for the club?”Let me share some of the things Doug accomplishes: Organizes our “offsite” meet ups with members in Tyler, Wichita Falls, and Granbury. Other than DE and AUTOCROSS he is out there directing traffic, putting up banners, or cleaning up afterwards. Recently Doug was responsible for our involvement with Park Place Porsche to celebrate 75 years of our brand.

So let us say thank you and join us in CELEBRATING Doug as our July Mav of the Month!

August: Chris Chilton, Paul Moseley and Raul Pena

What happens when friends get together for coffee? You guessed it -- you have a lot of fun catching up on news AND you make new friends. That was exactly what Raul Pena, Paul Moseley, and Chris Chilton wanted to achieve by starting a new, weekly Maverick Region morning coffee event in Fort Worth. “The idea of a local meet-up had been around for quite a while, but it finally hit critical mass last month when we visited the Flower Mound Porsche Coffee guys and saw how much fun they were having.” Thanks to these three, Fort Worth and surrounding area has a new place to gather and share our passion. Congratulations guys, we thank you and love what you’re doing. Here’s to the August Mavs of the Month!

2023 Porsche Parade Recap: Mavericks in Palm Springs

The 67th Porsche Parade took place June 18-24, 2023 in the desert city of La Quinta, California, with over 1,100 entries from all over North America. As you know, the Porsche Parade is PCA’s week-long annual convention that takes place in a different part of the

But back to 2023. The Parade offers competitive events, touring events (both guided and self-led), and social events – so many over the course of seven days that it’s impossible to participate in all of them. There were about a dozen and half entries from Maverick Region, plus their co-entrants, and many of them entered competitive events. Listed below are those events, highlighting Maverick entrants and their placings. So here, in chronological order, are the results.

Concours d’Elegance

country each year, allowing most PCA members a chance to attend a “nearby” Parade at least once every three years, although many attend every year, regardless of the distance from home.

For a long time, the Parade used to consist mainly of competitive events and awards banquets, but in the last decade or so, it has opened up its menu of events to include PCAers who want to relax, take a tour or two, and enjoy the local flavor of wherever the Parade takes place for a given year. Porsche Panorama will cover the overall Parade in an issue this fall, but I wanted to focus on Maverick Region’s presence there this year, in an effort to convince those of you still on the fence to

The Concours is PCA’s premium car show, featuring Porsches of every model and era. There are three main groupings of classes, with several classes in each group. The Restoration Group is for Porsches that have been rebuilt, repainted, or otherwise redone from its factory condition. Model series in this group are limited to 356, 914, air-cooled 911s and 912s, the transaxle models (924, 928, 944, 968), and factory race cars. The Preservation Group is for Porsches that have been preserved in their original condition, but driven and not just stored away, although there are separate classes for “low-mileage” cars that have been driven less than 1,000 miles per year. Model series in this group are the same as for the Restoration Group, with the exclusion of factory race cars.

Then there is the Preparation Group, which is for Porsches that have been maintained similar to factory original, but the emphasis is on preparation and cleanliness, not originality. This group is subdivided into two subgroups, Preparation Group I and Preparation Group II. Group I consists of the previously named models, plus 996/997s, Cayennes and Panameras through 2011, limited production models, modifieds,

give it a try, since the next two Parades will be within a day’s drive of the DFW area. In 2024, it will take place June 9-16 in Birmingham, AL, and in 2025 it will be even closer, in Oklahoma City, July 6-12.

and factory race cars. Group II contains 991/992s, all Boxsters and Caymans, Cayennes/Panameras/Macans from 2012 on, and Taycans. They are further broken down into Touring and Street classes, with the Touring

classes being judged on exterior, interior, and engine/ storage compartments (except that the Boxsters and Caymans are not judged on engine compartments), while the Street classes are judged on exterior and interior only.

There were two Maverick entries in the Concours: Raul and Lisa Pena, who took 5th place in class PP14S (Preparation Group II, Street Boxster/Cayman, 2013 on), and Maverick Miles Nehemiah (yes, he goes by “Maverick”) and his co-entrant Winn Reese, taking 1st place in class PP08S (Preparation Group I, Street Cayenne up to 2011). I spoke to Maverick at the Concours; he actually resides in the greater Los Angeles area, but prefers to be a member of Maverick Region. Congratulations to the Penas and to Maverick and Winn for putting in the effort to show your Porsches in this highly competitive event!

Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Rally

This event is run on public roads at legal speeds, pitting each team’s (driver and navigator) navigational skills against a set of route instructions guiding them along an unfamiliar course, requiring the competitors to stay on course, maintain various average speeds, and arrive at hidden checkpoints exactly on time based on the course length and the stipulated average speed. Teams are assessed one point for each second they are either early or late to a checkpoint, so a perfect score is zero.

Beginning last year, the TSD Rally began using a smartphone app called Richta Competitor, which uses GPS to track the time and location of each competitor, and eliminates the need for the checkpoints to be manned, or even marked. In the past, there were rarely more than five or six checkpoints, due to the logistics of finding safe places along the route where multiple cars could stop, pick up and/or deliver paperwork, and prepare for the next leg of the rally. With the Richta app, this is no longer necessary; checkpoints are created by the Rallymaster in the app, so there is no technical limit to the number of checkpoints in a given event. This year there were 25 checkpoints, with no stopping required. Even better, as each team encountered a checkpoint, the app showed them exactly how many seconds fast or slow they were for that leg, providing instant feedback for the next leg. For TSD rallyists, the Richta app is a game-changer, bringing the sport into the 21st Century.

There are five TSD classes, based on how well

equipped the teams are, in terms of time, speed, and distance measuring equipment. This year there was only one entry from Maverick Region: Sue Crimm (driver) and Carey Spreen (navigator) in our 2008 Cayenne, competing in class R04 (Equipped-Plus, for cars with built-in computers that display average speed). Sue and I finished in 27th place out of 69 entrants in our class – not good enough for a trophy – but we enjoyed the challenge and the very scenic desert route, which had a total elevation change of about 2,000 feet, from the high point at Joshua Tree National Park (1,800 ft) to the low point near the Salton Sea (200 ft below sea level).

Autocross

An autocross is a race against the clock, taking place on a large parking lot, using traffic cones to indicate the course. Cars are sent out one at a time, with each timed run being recorded and compared with others in the same class. For the Parade autocross, we were allowed four runs each, with the best run determining our place in class.

There are four class categories, related to how much the cars have been modified. Showroom Stock is for Porsches with no performance-enhancing changes at all, with the exception of tires with 200 treadwear ratings. Production is for Porsches with limited induction, exhaust, suspension, brake/wheel/tire, chassis/body/ interior, and transmission modifications. The Improved category is for Porsches that have been more heavily modified than Production cars, and the Modified category is basically for full-race specification Porsches.

There were seven Mavericks who competed in the autocross, plus an entrant from Monterey Bay Region with family ties to our region!

In Showroom Stock Class S2, Carey Spreen took 2nd place in his 2004 Boxster S, and daughter Geneva (the Monterey Bay entrant) took 3rd in the Women’s division of the same class in the same car. In Showroom Stock Class S9, Thomas Briggs took home a 1st place trophy in the family’s 2012 Cayenne Turbo. I must note that Thomas is 17 years old and competed as a PCA JPP (Junior Participation Program) entrant, so kudos to Thomas in besting the other three cars in his class!

9
Left: Thomas Briggs on his way to first place in his autocross class Right: Wendy Shoffit at the autocross

In Production Class P2, Ed Mayo drove his 1972 911S to 4th place, just out of the trophies, while Julia Underwood won a 1st place trophy in the Women’s division of the class in the same car. Wrapping up the Production category, previous Women’s Top Time of Day multiple-winner Wendy Shoffit garnered 1st place in the Women’s division of Production Class P6, driving her 2020 Taycan Turbo S.

In Improved Class I3, Jeff Hermann drove his 2002 Turbo to 4th place, while wife Lisa won a 1st place trophy for the Women’s division of the same class, driving the same car. Congratulations to the Maverick women, who brought home the Autocross hardware!

Gimmick Rally

The Gimmick Rally is more of a fun event – although still competitive – that typically involves driving a prescribed route, looking for signs and landmarks that answer questions asked in the route instructions. This year, though, the gimmick was to find all official (white) speed limit signs along the route, note the speed limit indicated, and add them all up. At the same time, competitors had to find all “suggested” (yellow) speed limit signs along the route and add them up. The total of the yellow signs was then to be subtracted from the total of the white signs, and the difference was the team’s official score. This was an interesting twist that kept the driver and all navigators (there was a class for more than two people in the vehicle) on their toes for the entire route, which followed the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway, starting and ending at Palm Springs Porsche, the local Porsche Center (apparently we aren’t supposed to call them “dealerships” any more). I highly recommend this route if you are ever in the Palm Springs area; the temperature difference from the valley floor (over 100 degrees F) to the highest elevation at about 6,000 feet (75 degrees F during the rally) is a welcome change, and the route is full of twisty roads and fun stops along the way.

Several Mavericks competed in the Gimmick Rally, although none of us placed high enough for a trophy. In the two-person vehicle class, Sue Crimm and Carey Spreen got 26th place; Josh Gutjahr navigated for San Diego Region’s Kevin Burke, taking 50th place; right behind them were Bob and Joyce DiRienzo in 51st spot; and Pat and Dave Gouldy picked up 89th position, out of a total of 132 participants. There was a class for PCA Juniors (and their drivers) as well. Heather Briggs drove and son Reagan Briggs navigated, taking 7th place in that class. Nice work, Briggs family!

Technical and Historical Quiz

This is just what it sounds like: a trivia quiz based on the technical and historical aspects of Porsche cars, Porsche the company, and PCA. It consists of 50 general questions, 25 model-specific questions, and five tiebreakers. All competitors get the same general questions, and there are nine different model-specific quizzes to choose from.

There are class winners and overall winners, which are calculated in different ways. Class winners’ model-specific scores are multiplied by 3, then added to their general scores for their total score, giving the model-specific scores more weight. For the overall awards, the general scores are multiplied by 3, then added to the model-specific scores, giving the general scores more weight.

In Class Q3 (1978 to 1989 911/930), Julia Underwood took 2nd place in the Women’s division. In Class Q6 (914), Carey Spreen won the 1st place trophy, and Josh Gutjahr took 7th place. Carey Spreen got the 2nd highest overall score for men, and Julia Underwood got the 4th highest overall score for women.

Art Show

PCA is full of artistic folks, and every year, the Parade puts on a contest where these folks can show off their talents. This year’s classes were Photography, Studio Arts, Artisan Crafts, each with several sub-classes, and a couple of classes for the PCA Juniors: Kids Artist and Junior Artist.

Julia Underwood has been entering the Art Show for several years, and this year she again took home a trophy – this time for 1st place in the Fiber Art subclass of Artisan Crafts, for one of two quilts that she made, composed entirely of Parade T-shirts collected over

the years by Myra Sutton, an active Maverick Region member who was an enthusiastic Parade-goer before her passing in 2019. Jasmine Shoffit also won an Honorable Mention for her digital rendition of her mother (Wendy), reimagined as a Porsche Queen.

PCA Junior Reagan Briggs also took 1st place in the Junior Artist – Crafts class for his paint work on a wooden Porsche model. Another trophy for the Briggs family!

National Awards

This recap of Maverick competitors at the Parade would not be complete without noting that our region won two awards. One was 3rd place for regions with 1,700+ members in the Newsletter Contest – congratulations to Slipstream Editor Kurt Scaggs for another outstanding year of Slipstream in print! The other trophy was the Membership Award for Actual Growth. Maverick Region gained more members than any other region in PCA for 2022, adding to our similar wins for 2018 and 2019.

Thanks for reading this far! I hope this story has been informative and inspirational to you so that you’ll consider attending a future Parade!

Maverick Women Behind the Wheel: Three Stories

Continuing to Hope

Maverick Region members have supported the Hope Shelter for nearly 30 years now. It started with Lanean Hughes back in the ‘90s and has continued after her passing. For a long time, it was easier for us to go to the shelter with donations because we had autocrosses and time trials in Mineral Wells.

We started at Motoring Mavs at Mayo in Euless where several members gathered for coffee, donuts, and to support the charity drive. Eight of us loaded six vehicles with donations and headed to Mineral Wells. The director, Lisa Huffaker, greeted us and happily directed us in with the donations. She then gave us a brief tour of the facility.

The shelter is a five-bedroom (18 beds) three-bath, 5,000 square foot home. The bedrooms all share common spaces, including a living room, kitchen, dining area, and playroom for the children. There’s a big backyard with a playground structure that we installed years ago shortly after the house was built. They also have multiple offices, a donation room, and conference rooms to handle the business side of things.

We’d load the car with whatever we had to donate and make a quick stop on Friday night before the driving event. Now, it is a dedicated trip. Going there, however, is so rewarding. It’s so gratifying to SEE where my donations go and meet some of the women there needing the help. While it’s a bit more time consuming, I much prefer it to putting clothes in a large donation bin in the grocery store parking lot. I like not wondering where my stuff is going. In my effort to share this experience with others, we held a clothing and “pink products” drive on May 20.

Ladies who Lunch

While many of us love surrounding ourselves with family to celebrate holidays, 15 of us opted to sneak away for a Memorial Day lunch gathering in Las Colinas to sip a craft cocktail and enjoy car talk. While we were only 15 women, we came from several locations in the metroplex driving a wide variety of Porsches.

With a hot, sunny day, we enjoyed the contemporary vibe indoors at the Cork and Pig Tavern. A few of us rolled up in our Boxsters, Lisa Campbell was spotted in her

We met some of the women there, which added to our joy in helping out. Thanks to the generosity of our members, we likely supplied them with more than a year’s worth of feminine hygiene products, clothing, and other household items. It was wonderful to connect our members to one of our region’s charities in a meaningful way.

Afterwards, most of us moved on to enjoy an absolutely delicious lunch at Natty Flat Smokehouse in Mineral Wells. Given more time I would have walked around the area, investigated the Crazy Water Hotel, and then gone to the Clark Gardens just east of town. I will be going again. Hopefully more of you can join next time! It’s a great way to spend the day.

Women Representation at the 75-year Celebration

When Kara Connor at Park Place invited the ladies to do something special at Porsche’s 75-year anniversary celebration, we jumped at the chance. Able to have a table at the event, our work began with deciding what to share with those who visited us. A whiz at setting up displays, Lisa Ward designed the table and brought a QR code to access our Facebook page. Wendy Shoffit handled the paper “stuff,” bringing slips for the raffle and a handout about future events. I brought the goodies: our new tumblers, t-shirts, and visors. Throw in our car window clings and business cards, and we were ready to talk to the ladies.

Our adventure began early since our cars were part of the display that day. About 11 a.m., participants arrived full of questions. We watched husbands push their wives towards us and met inquisitive women who recently bought their first Porsches. We found that many folks we spoke to were unaware of our Maverick Region club, the PCA, and the MWBTW. We had so much fun sharing information about future events and encouraging involvement.

We raffled off a handful of items to participants. Sweta Patel and Meha Patel won tumblers, and our big winner was Chris Cuyler, who won 50% off our ladies HPDE day on July 29 at Eagles Canyon Raceway.

In addition to our booth at the anniversary party, we had a ‘lipstick reader’ at a booth next to us! Laurae West of Lip Prints by Laura had us apply lipstick, kiss a postcard, and tell us things about our personalities. This was all based on how we kissed the postcard, our lip shape, size and color depth on the card. Amazingly, it was pretty close to what we do. This added a fun touch to our day.

We wrapped up the day around 2 p.m. with a lot more women interested in who we are. Our Facebook page keeps growing as do our goals for the upcoming year!

Equipe Rapide Autocross Series: Cup 5

Five events down, Five to go! The Mirrorcross event in Oklahoma on June 3 was challenging and a very fast course. This one combined the drag race style side by side starts, Christmas Tree starting lights and combined best times (including reaction time) from the right and left course. We normally also get 60 foot times but that was not working that day. The high horsepower cars had some great opportunities to let them loose! This event had a lower participation than most due to the remote site and many conflicting autocross events on the calendar.

Five Porsche drivers took to the challenge, and we were all “skirted”! Sigrid was the first-quick Porsche on these very fast courses in her 914 2.0.

The next five events will all be at our local favorite site, Lone Star Park in Gran Prairie. We look forward to seeing you there. Full Calendar, season standings and results are at www.autocross.com Contact me for questions, classing information, or details @

2023 Fiesta New Mexico: fun with the Roadrunner Region

We’ve taken advantage of the hospitality of other PCA Regions around the country since we purchased our 2014 Boxster S nine years ago to begin our road trip retirement odyssey. The current odometer reading of 67,400 miles is a testament to the fun we’ve had driving on many bucket list roads during those years. The list has almost gotten too long, and includes experiences on the Tail of the Dragon, the Million Dollar Highway, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mulholland Drive, the Angeles Crest Highway, Route 30 in Oregon, Route 66, and so many more. On many of these drives we’ve also attended Regional PCA events and had many wonderful experiences.

Our most recent road trip included the 2023 edition of Fiesta New Mexico, sponsored by the Roadrunner Region, which includes Albuquerque and Santa Fe and most of New Mexico within its border. This event has been held 47 times in the 56 year history of that Region. We also attended their 50th Anniversary in 2017, along with about 14 other Maverick members, 2021 with around 10 other Mavericks and this year, 2023, with only two other Mavericks, each time with Santa Fe as the host location. The event features a Concours on the Plaza, a variety of drives over three days, a Legends Dinner (with the featured speakers), and the ending awards banquet. The organizers of Fiesta New Mexico typically limit registration to 100 Porsches, so early registration is a must! When you combine Santa Fe with a good selection of mountain roads close by, this

venue is a favorite of ours. Even though the Roadrunner Region is small compared to the Maverick Region (825 total members compared with our 3,918 total membership), they’ve continued to bring top Porsche speakers to spend the four-day event with all participants. This year’s event featured Hurley Haywood and Sean Cridland, while 2021 brought together Charles Mendez, Brian Redman, David Cowart, and David Hobbs.

Sharon and I have actually met fellow Maverick members for the first time while attending this event. For example, we met Raul and Lisa Pena from our Fort Worth side of the Region at the 2021 Fiesta event and then renewed our friendship with them at the 2023 Fiesta edition. The Porsche drivers and their guests came from the Mountain States area, Oklahoma, Texas, and as far away as Illinois, California, and Maryland.

With the limited registration, everyone is assured of meeting most of the participants, making new friends, having reasonable sized drives and restaurant groups, enjoying private collections in the area, and experiencing all that Santa Fe has to offer. Plus, if you’re in the road tripping mood, it’s easy to head west to Arizona and California, north to Colorado and Utah, or east to Oklahoma, all along great secondary roads either before or after the Fiesta New Mexico event.

It appears the Roadrunner Region is planning on holding Fiesta on an every other year schedule for the future, so mark this on your calendar for May 2025 if you enjoy Santa Fe, like to drive mountain roads and are looking to experience how other PCA Regions host multi-day events.

Maverick Marktpreis: Cayman GT4 (981)

In 2007, Porsche introduced the Cayman, much to driving enthusiasts’ delight. Essentially a hardtop Boxster, the Cayman was a true driver’s car. With the rigidity of its chassis and the ideal engine placement, the car handled brilliantly. By the time the second generation Cayman (981) was launched, it was so good, it legitimately challenged the flagship 911.

Then in 2016, Porsche did the unthinkable. It gifted the Cayman with Gran Turismo (GT) treatment and a powerful 911 S engine. The Cayman GT4 was born. All Porsche GT cars are special. These street legal race cars have a loyal following. The one-year only, limited production GT4 is no exception. Since its introduction, the GT4 routinely sells at a premium above MSRP.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation

Since starting this series in 2016, I always think the previous one is the best yet. Well, I will say it is true again. Our meeting was purely accidental, as I was meeting a friend for coffee one morning. Jack was there with a mutual friend, Greg Cleath, and Greg said “let me introduce you to a new member and your neighbor.” Sure enough, Jack lives about 1/3 of a mile from us. As weeks went by, I would see him over coffee or in the coffee house on his laptop, typing away. As I got to know him and his wife Sarah a bit more, I finally said, “we have to share your story with our club.”

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . .

Jack Stewart, member since 2023 Owner, 1999 996 Carrera 4 Cab

Bill Kruder: So, where are you from? Jack Stewart: I was born in Southern California, Orange County, but we moved when I was very young. When I was in 2nd grade we moved to Bothell, Washington, which is about 30 minutes northeast of Seattle, just north of Lake Washington. I call that home.

BK: So, after high school, where did you go to college?

JS: I was very fortunate and received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

BK: Whoa, that’s very cool. Was this a lifelong dream?

JS: Well (laughing) I guess you could say that. When I was 10 years old, I read an article about King Hall in Boys Life magazine. That’s the dining room at the Academy that feeds 4,000 midshipmen all at once! I was so taken by that idea and knew I had to go there. When “Top Gun” came out, my future was set.

BK: How did you go from reading about it to going there?

JS: Now this is pretty funny. After reading the article in Boys Life, 10-year-old Jack wrote to the Admissions Office and told them he wanted to attend (laughing). A few weeks later, I got a response. Basically, it was a brush-off with a sticker and a note saying I was too young to

BK: What did you do after graduation?

JS: I was selected for Navy Pilot and moved to Pensacola, Florida to begin flight school.

BK: What was that experience like, and where did that take you?

JS: Intense – best time of my life up to then. After completing Aviation Preflight Indoctrination – basically, ground school – I moved from Pensacola to Corpus Christi, Texas for Primary. We spent six months learning to fly the T-34C Turbo Mentor. From there, I was selected for jets and moved to Kingsville, Texas to train in the T-45A Goshawk – my first jet. That training lasted a year and included dogfighting, bombing, and landing on an aircraft carrier. I received my wings there before moving to Virginia Beach, Virginia for training in the FA-18C Hornet.

BK: So, how long did you stay in the Navy?

JS: I retired after 23 years; 12 years Active Duty, and my last 11 in the Navy Reserve, flying Hornets in New Orleans, Louisiana.

BK: I understand you fly for Southwest now; did you do that right away?

apply. So, I wrote every year after. And every year, I received another brush-off and another sticker in the mail. Until my junior year when they sent back an application.

BK: Now that’s a story (laughing). What year did you graduate?

JS: I graduated in 1999 with a B.S. – not a B.A. – in English. I had to take a lot of engineering classes, but I like to say most of my papers were B.S. anyway.

BK: When you graduate you are an Officer, right?

JS: That’s right. When we graduate, we are commissioned as either an Ensign in the Navy or Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

JS: No. Most guys do, but I just wasn’t ready, I guess. Having flown the FA-18, I thought going to a 737 would be like going from a 911 to a school bus (laughing). But no, really I had other plans.

BK: What did you do then?

JS: I had earned my Masters in Project Management so I went off in that direction.

BK: So when did flying come back?

JS: I decided it would be a good fit for us back in 2014. I came on to Southwest as a First Officer flying out of Houston.

BK: Guess this is a good time to ask how you ended up in Dallas?

JS: We were living in Sarah’s hometown, Lafayette, Louisiana, and I was driving five hours to work. Needless to say, that gets old fast, so Sarah and I decided we needed to move closer to a hub. We almost ended up in Denver, but at the 11th hour, decided Dallas would be a better fit for our family. So, in 2017, we packed up the family and moved to Light Farms in Celina.

BK: I understand this was a big year for you in your pilot career?

JS: Yes, I was promoted to Captain earlier this year.

BK: And that partially explains how the Porsche entered your life?

JS: It does indeed. Owning a Porsche has always been a dream, but when I graduated from the Academy in 1999, it just wasn’t feasible. Later, with all our moves and adding kids, it just never made sense. So as a treat to myself after making Captain, we decided the time was right and found our 996 up in Chicago.

BK: There’s more than it being just a 996?

JS: So true. It’s a 1999 – the year I graduated from the

BK: Sarah?

JS: (laughing) Her sister, Rebecca. Did I tell you they were twins? To my surprise, her fiancée walked up and told me she was spoken for, but quickly added, “There’s one over there who looks just like her.”

BK: (laughing) You thought her sister was prettier?

JS: I just hadn’t seen Sarah yet.

BK: How long did you date before getting married?

JS: About two years. The next week I flew from Virginia Beach to New Orleans in the FA-18, and she drove in from Baton Rouge to see me. We had a long-distance relationship and carried that into my first deployment a few months later. I was gone for almost two years straight, and by the time we got married, I think we had spent maybe a total of 30 days together. People thought we were crazy.

BK: How long have you been married now?

JS: 19 years this month.

BK: One last thing, what is something most people would have no idea you do?

JS: I love books. I grew up in libraries, majored in English, and was a huge Tom Clancy fan. Last November, I signed my first four-book deal and my debut novel, “Unknown Rider” releases this coming November.

BK: Whoa! Where can people go to learn more about that?

Academy – and was the exact car I would have bought if I could have afforded it. The color is Polar Silver with Metropol Blue interior and top – the perfect color combination to commemorate my time in the Navy.

BK: Ok, let’s talk cars now. What was your first?

JS: I bought a 1964 VW Beetle when I was sixteen and drove it for a year before selling it to buy a 1963 Beetle. My first new car was a 1997 VW GTI that I bought my junior year at the Naval Academy.

BK: So I see a pattern forming?

JS: I’ve always been a fan of German cars – I drive an Audi A4 to and from the airport now – but the Porsche has always been the pinnacle for me. I remember my parents telling me how they bought a brand new 914 as newlyweds. I was jealous.

BK: Tell me about your family.

JS: Sarah and I have three kids: Tre is 17, William is 15, and Becca (Rebecca) is 10.

BK: I met Sarah at coffee one morning and she told me a funny story of you two meeting?

JS: (laughing) Oh yes, one for the ages. I was at the wedding of my best friend from the Naval Academy who was marrying Sarah’s sorority sister from LSU. At the reception, I met a really nice young lady and started chatting with her.

JS: They can visit my website, www.jackstewartbooks.com.

PCA Club Racing: Texas Two Step

I hope everyone had a blast at our Memorial Weekend club race at Eagles Canyon Raceway - I know I did. We had a 27-car Spec Boxster (SPB) race group and a second race group of 27 cars covering 13 classes. It was another fantastic weekend of mixed class PCA club racing.

In SBP, Daniel Shoffner finally broke Livio Galanti’s incredible 12 consecutive ECR SPB win streak. Daniel notched two SPB wins, Aidan Meek also took a SPB win, and Jeff Wilson collected three P3 trophies. In SP1, Pat Heptig swept the field with three wins.

At lunch time we host a charity parade lap session for any driver who wants to get a taste of the track. During this event we had participants from the Maverick tour

group and Warbonnet Region on track for some spirited laps around ECR.

Big thank you to all the Maverick Region volunteers working the control tower, registration, grid, pace car, and the tech shed. Maverick Region HPDE was also present, with 50 drivers on track. We will host our next HPDE over the Labor Day weekend at ECR. We’ll be back at racing ECR on October 14-15 for the next round of our Maverick Region ECR Texas Two-Step PCA Club Races.

In October, instead of our traditional Saturday evening party, ECR will host the Greenwood-Slidell Fire Department Annual Fish Fry. Cory Morrow, a Texas singer-songwriter, will be the headline performer. Bring your friends and family as we have something of interest for everyone. Come out to ECR to race, tour the track, drive the HPDE, listen to some good music, or just hang out with your friends.

Thank you to our fabulous Club Race and HPDE sponsors. Without their help we could not present these events.

My First Porsche Parade: 2023

First, let’s back up a little. On June 30, 2021 I drove to Dallas to pick up my first dream car, Sweet P, a 718 Boxster. It was love at first sight and drive! I bought her via an auction from a fellow Maverick. He suggested I join PCA and find out what the club was all about. So, I bit the hook and never looked back.

errant roadrunner. The next morning we hiked the other half of the Saguaro NP and hit the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum for a star gazing party that night (cloudy). We spent the night there and got up early as we had to arrive in La Quinta to register before they closed for the day at 4 pm.

Luckily, in spite of the dry blowing sandy storms, we made it in time for Parade check-in. The La Quinta Resort is a little daunting the first time you walk in, but when you figure out the layout, it’s pretty easy to get around. Check-in is a little overwhelming your first time with just figuring out what you need to accomplish and who you need to see. The hundreds of volunteers answered all our questions and got us started. That included picking up our banquet tickets, tour packets with our wristbands, and finally our last item, the cool Porsche backpack with all the freebie stuff and other important items.

After my first Mavs & Mochas at the NBCF women’s event, I continued to meet people and find out about all the wonderful activities. The tours, the Treffens, the Parade, Palooza, Boxtoberfest . . . you name it, I heard about them all. So, the Parade was what intrigued me the most, where fellow Porsche owners meet and do “stuff”? We had just missed the one in 2021, and we were coming home from a long trip across the pond in May 2022, so we also missed the Poconos. The next one up was Palm Springs, CA. Perfect; my sister in law lives in Pasadena so we could go see her as a bonus.

The planning began. We had been lucky enough to travel to the area in March 2022 for the big tennis tournament in Indian Wells and stayed in a fabulous condominium. That was my first commitment: our lodging, easy peasy. Then in January 2023, registration opened, and I was in my hotel in Patagonia getting that done. Next, we started talking about the drive to get there. One of the other things I wanted to do was make it to some National Parks along the way. After much discussion, we decided to go I-20, I-10, I-8 past the Salton Sea and up to La Quinta, CA. On the way home we would hit Route 66!

Our first stop was to go watch the bats at Carlsbad Caverns NP. We had been there before when our bat watching was not very successful, this time proved much better. The next morning, we headed to the Guadalupe Mountain NP for a hike to Smith Springs. What a morning with cactus blooming, great views, and more. The springs were gorgeous, but you sadly could not swim in them.

Then, on to Tucson, AZ for the night and to visit the Saguaro NP. We toured there during sunset and saw some absolutely beautiful colors, more blooming cactus and one

After that, we visited the Parade store. Wendy (Shoffit) told me to make sure we went there the first day, because by the second day most of those items would be gone. No kidding! The blingy t-shirt I wanted was down to six left. David wanted a t-shirt, and I found a nice heavier Porsche jacket for winter driving. What’s next? We had a banquet that night, so we drove to our condo which was literally right next door to the Resort, to unpack and prepare for the evening’s event, a Welcome Party sponsored by Pirelli.

There was a Zone party prior to the banquet, where we met the PCA President Aaron Ambrosino and his wife, Emily (thank you Wendy), and caught up with the Shoffits and Spreens, and met the Briggs. Then off to dinner in the largest ballroom, plus a second ballroom filled with the overflow. We were seated with people we never met, yet we were all connected through the love of our Porsches. Everyone was so friendly and you never had time to feel out of place. The perennial emcee, Mark Shevitz, entertained us with stories, door prizes and more.

The next day was the big event: Concours d’Elegance. Keep in mind that we are in the desert and it’s going to be over 100 degrees every day. So going to the Concours meant getting up early so we wouldn’t melt along with the cars. The spectacular backdrop for this event was the PGA West Pete Dye Mountain Course with mountains in the backdrop, a pond, and beautiful grass. I can’t tell you how many cars there were, but what I can tell you is that every owner had a wonderful story about their car!

Many had flown over to Germany to watch their car built, and many had connections

28 August

to family and friends as prior owners. The car was their pride and joy. I will say, as a Maverick, I have been spoiled by our Concours and our All Member parties where I have witnessed just as many beautiful cars. We went back to the resort, had lunch, cruised the Parade store one more time and we were done for the day.

The next day was the Art show and I wanted to see the artwork that Jasmine Shoffit had completed of her mother. It was a wonderful piece of art illustrating our beautiful Wendy as a Queen with all the Porsche designs entangled in the lace, jewelry, and more. Jasmine won an Honorable Mention for her artwork – Congrats! Then off to downtown Palm Springs for lunch, visit the stores, get a date shake, and drove around to look at homes.

The Porsche Concours d’Elegance Banquet was that evening where the final awards were given for the winners. We also heard from Mark Porsche and George Feygin, General Counsel and VP of Porsche. Then the national awards were given: PCA Enthusiast of the Year, Porsche Family of the Year, PCA Region of the Year, Service Awards, and door prizes. Coming up the next day? Our tours!

We travelled back to Palm Springs to watch some AutoX

eventually stopped for lunch and had another date shake (so tasty). At the dealership we enjoyed treats and the showroom with some new Porsches. We had to turn in our guess, along with some more guesses in case of a tie, such as how many pine needles were in the container! We didn’t win, but we had a blast. That evening as a special treat, as we were able to see the new movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, where a Porsche plays a BIG part!

Friday, the last day of tours, was our drive to Lake Arrowhead. This tour was a little different, in that we had to drive for almost an hour to get to the twisty neat roads up the mountain to the lake. We were rewarded for our patience again with the roads, as we wound our way up to the top and found Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, our lunch destination. We were seated outside on the patio by the pool and had a fabulous view of the lake. We had fun visiting with our group in the tour about their cars, what they were doing at Parade and where did they travel from.

After lunch, David and I drove towards Big Bear with more beautiful roads, another lake and great views. Then it was time to head down through the desert and into La Quinta. We had enough time to relax and make it to our final banquet, the Michelin Autocross Awards and PCA Juniors Recognition Dinner. Here we found out who won the autocross events, the Gimmick rally, the many PCA Junior events, and more. Oh, and this is where we found out that our Region was the winner with the most growth in a year! We all ran up to claim the award! What fun! And then suddenly it was OVER.

where we talked to Carey Spreen and watched several people try to navigate the course. I might even try that when we get home! Then, off to our “tour”, which was going on the Aerial Tram that rotates 360 degrees as you travel up to the top of the mountain. Our group was treated to a wonderful lunch that had a great view of the valley below us. We enjoyed the 20-degree difference in temperature! After lunch the group broke up, hiked around the top of the peak and travelled back to our temporary home away from home.

It was our anniversary so we treated ourselves to a fivestar restaurant for dinner with a view of the mountains at sunset. The next day was an early morning for the Gimmick Rally. Over 100 cars participated, and one left every minute, more or less. What’s a Gimmick Rally, you ask? Well this one was “easy”. We had a specific route to drive (every other one of us went opposite directions) and we had to add up the speed limit signs and subtract the cautionary ones that told you to slow down to X speed. We decided to do our best, but we really wanted to enjoy the roads and the scenery. David did his best with me yelling out the speed limits to him every time I spotted one. We stopped in Idyllwild, CA at the top of the mountain, enjoyed the town and continued on to the other stops (note: this was NOT a timed event).

As we wound our way back to Porsche Palm Springs, we

We woke up Saturday not feeling well, so we had to miss the big Parade of Porsches led by the police around town and back up to the mountains. So sad that was the end for us, but we had to focus on getting better, we had a long drive home. I will tell you it was an experience I will not forget, EVERYONE was so very friendly and helpful everywhere you went. The next two Parades are much closer to us. In 2024 it’s in Birmingham, AL and then in 2025, in Oklahoma City! Get ready to attend and have a great time meeting others that love their Porsche as much as you!

We drove home with many good intentions, but missed out on Joshua Tree NP where we had visited before, and a super twisty road outside of Oatman, AZ. We still did drive some of Route 66 in AZ as we stopped in Williams for the night. Williams, AZ is the home to the Grand Canyon Railroad and a very cute touristy town. The next day we headed for Albuquerque, NM and drove through the Petrified Forest NP as well as the Painted Desert. We stopped many times to revel in the views and the beauty of the petrified wood. If you’ve never been there, it is different than all the other parks I’ve ever visited. Once in Albuquerque we had a late dinner and prepared to drive the rest of the way home.

I will say, that I was nervous how I would do, as well as the car, when driving that far, in such remote places (so many deserts). But it was a wonderful trip that we both enjoyed and will do again, maybe not next month, but soon! Oh, and we never got to Pasadena to see our family.

There is No Substitute: Seeing Red

Continuing the series entitled, There is No Substitute, let’s take a look at member photos in red. While I enjoyed the prevalence of ‘guard’s red,’ I found that some colors are sort of red, but not exactly. For example, Scott Kerfoot is a member known for clothes that match his ‘carmine red’ GT3. Then, we have a

set of ‘arena reds displayed because’ two are better than one’ according to Jay Rampuria, Everybody, let’s acknowledge that while Pat Carmichael’s Cayman is actually ‘lava orange,’ it is often mistaken for red.

Fan favorite, the ubiquitous ‘guard’s red’ is prominently displayed

in this article. Be impressed with Taylor Stilovich’s mindboggling display of 4500 horsepower between three 997s (2 red and one not red).

Whether in the ‘wild,’ getting beautified or simply fancy parked, there is no substitute. Without a doubt, guard’s red Porsches are well represented here.

Mike: Porsche 963 at Le Mans

For this month’s edition of Slipstream, I was excited and anticipating to be scribing about multiple Porsche podium finishes at this year’s 24 Hrs. of Le Mans. Well, as you are aware, my expectations were shattered at the drop of the checkered flag. I believe “expectation” for a podium finish was a reasonable outcome for the most important race on the global sports car circuit. Yes, I understand this is Le Mans, and in the words of local Le Mans legend Jack Griffin, “anything can happen.” But, let’s be reminded that Porsche is the winningest manufacturer at Le Mans, with 108 class wins and 19 overall victories. Additionally, this year marked the inaugural debut of the highly anticipated performance of the 963, with four machines making up 25% (more than any other manufacturer) of the Hypercar field. On top of that, racing magnate Roger Penske was tracking three of those machines with a special livery commemorating the brand’s 75th anniversary and the centennial anniversary of the first running of 24 Heures du Mans. Adding to the spectacle, Team JOTA was running a beautifully gold-liveried Hertzsponsored 963 machine. Yes, I think “expectation” is in the right, and anything short of a podium finish - make that multiple podium finishes - or let’s just go with an overall victory - would be a disappointment!

So what happened? I’m not going to attempt, nor am I anywhere near qualified, to offer up some sort of off the cuff explanation as to why Ferrari, Toyota, and Cadillac bested Porsche in this year’s Le Mans. However, I came across an article in rennlist.com by Michele Lupini titled “Porsche’s 20-year Old Engine and Supermarket Chassis Were Just Not Up To It” that offered up a perspective. To be honest, the article title kinda pissed me off; who in their right mind is disparaging OUR BRAND?! Of course, my curiosity got the better of me, and I had to read on to see what this was all about. Outside of the weather volatility and the drama from the many crashes, the 963 suffered more from car issues vs. on-track challenges. Complications from its cooling system, along with a 1.5-hr pit stop replacing the LMDh-standard Williams Engineering hybrid battery, were unfortunate failures from which even the best drivers couldn’t recover. The author goes on to suggest, “perhaps Porsche rested too hard on its impeccable Le Mans laurels? Was Zufferhausen [sic] just too complacent?” Even Porsche Factory Motorsport boss Thomas Lautenbach was quoted as admitting “Le Mans was disappointing.” The article goes on to discuss how the 963’s engine was “frankensteined” (my word choosing – not the author’s) off of the highly successful 2007 ALMS RS Spyder. In regards to the “Supermarket Chassis,” the author writes about Porsche’s choice of a Multimatic chassis, while

Ferrari and Toyota built their own. The purist will recall the early challenges Porsche faced with the 917, 956, 962, GT1, and 919. I have all the confidence that the 2023 Le Mans was just one of those challenges for the history books and that in ’24, the 963 will be back with a vengeance!

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

I noticed this month that I am celebrating 10 years as a member of the Maverick Region. Porsche is celebrating 75 years making the cars that we all enjoy. But we’re all celebrating the passage of time. For some of us, it’s a joyous occasion. For others it marks loss and introspection. Hopefully you feel more of the former, if not find your keys and a curvy road.

I divulged in the June issue that I tend to hang onto to things, sometimes for no other reason than to remember something. A dream, an event, a feeling of joy. I have a piece of furniture in my office more or less devoted to the display of some of these things, and if only my collected treasures stopped there we would probably have more cohesive decor and less rolled eyes when I had a “great idea for the guest room”. I would imagine that for many of us, the passions that drive us results in collections of some sort. And those collections will inevitably need to find new stewardship one day. Said another way, one day we will be no longer and someone will need to deal with our stuff.

My son likes cars, but he doesn’t love them yet. He might not, and that’s totally fine with me, but the thought of him looking at the pile of “things” that I’ve accumulated and

having no idea what to do with them gives me pause. For those of us that collect, we have all seen the ads for a Porsche that someone is selling for a friend. Usually that friend is a son, daughter or widowed spouse that has no idea what they have, how to take care of it, or most importantly what type of person the former owner would want to pass the car on to. I don’t know what the answer is, but I know I’m going to think on it. Maybe writing things down isn’t a bad place to start, at least to see it all there in front of us. A friend of mine wrote a short book to give to his family and answer some of the questions that come up a generation or two down the road about who he was and what he did. You might be thinking “yeah, but I haven’t done anything that interesting”. Hopefully for those that knew us, it will be interesting because it was us. I imagine most of us have wills and the like, but they don’t really tell the whole story. Write down some stories, record a video. Give your family something to go with the stuff.

Oh, the picture? My son is a “mustang guy” at the moment, but I think he might just come around. Look up from the stuff, spend some time with family and please, Enjoy the Drive.
