Board Botschaft: PCA Palooza

Wow, have things changed since I last wrote one of these articles, for the August 2022 edition. Back then, I was writing about the Dog Days of Summer, and the need to protect ourselves, our Porsches, and our pets from the hot Texas sun. Today, I’m writing about snow! Well, not here in Texas, but anyone who attended Porsche Palooza on November 10-13 saw some of the white stuff.

What is Palooza? According to the official PCA Palooza website, Palooza is “An occasion for feasting or celebration, especially a time of almost religious significance that occurs at regular intervals.” And feast and celebrate we did, with some of the many Mavericks in attendance!

For those of you who might not have experienced PCA Palooza yet, it is an annual, multi-region PCA event located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, hosted by the White River Region, Cimarron Region and Ozark Region. Typically held over a 4 day period, Thursday through Sunday, Palooza consists of a variety of scenic drives through the surrounding countryside, a car show, a parade through the charming and historic town of Eureka Springs, an awards banquet, and much more.

We didn’t arrive in time for the 159 mile Canyons and Cuisine Tour we had signed up for on Thursday, so we took that as an opportunity to explore around the Eureka Springs area and meet up with fellow Mavs for dinner that evening. Friday morning, we did participate

After a very tasty lunch with some new friends, we were back on the road, with only a brief stop to let about a dozen wild turkeys cross the road…..thankfully our tour leader was able to bring his Porsche 930 to a stop in the middle of the road, quick enough to avoid the turkeys, but also allowing ample space for the rest of us to stop in time.

in the 95 mile Valley View Tour, which included a lunch stop at the Hindsville Café, where the staff greeted all of us warmly, wearing their special Palooza shirts.

Saturday morning, we woke up to snow covered cars. Membership Chair, Tom Gomer apparently broke his Sam’s Club card, using it to scrape the ice from the windshield of their 997 cabriolet. Fortunately, the roads were relatively clear, and most of the snow melted away. Tours continued that morning, others visited the Thorncrown Chapel, with the Parade and Car Show in the afternoon. More food, beverages and cigars that evening…..then packed up the car Sunday morning for the five hour drive home. It’s amazing how much you can stuff into the 2 trunks of a Boxster. We had brought quite a bit of food and beverage with us; but the space vacated by 3 days of consumption was more than taken up by purchases of 4 pairs of shoes and 1 sweatshirt. But no room for my art purchase from the Saturday silent auction, which had to ride home on Frank’s lap. What a great time with our Maverick friends and new friends…..looking forward to next year!

Maverick of the Month

David joined the PCA back in 2005. He moved to the DFW area the following year and has been a Maverick member ever since. If you know David, you know that he is experienced behind the wheel as a PCA Club Racer, starting in close to 170 races over the past 12 years, so it was only natural for him to jump into another comfortable seat as the Region’s Club Race Co-Chair back in 2019. Within a year he also became a PCA National Club Racing Steward, now servicing the past two years. So whether it’s the streets or the track, local or national, there’s always ways to keep our club Fueled by Volunteers. Please join me in Congratulating David as our Maverick of the Month!

PCA Club Race: Maverick Region’s 2nd Club Race of 2022

factory GT3 Cup car. We had racers from coast to coast from California to Connecticut, with top attendance at a near PCA class record of 33 Spec Boxsters and a dozen or so SP1 944s.

Eagles Canyon Raceway is a beautifully technical 2.6mile, 15-turn racetrack in the rolling north Texas prairie. The ECR PCA race weekend has something for everyone; it is a beautiful facility to watch racing, whether at the clubhouse terrace or the Turn 1 patio. The first day of racing was wrapped up by a fantastic ECR-sponsored party on Saturday evening with food, drinks, and live music.

We also hosted a solo HPDE for intermediate and advanced drivers to drive on the track, as well as watch the great wheelto-wheel racing. We’ll be back racing at ECR in 2023 over Memorial Day weekend (May 27-28) and again in the fall (October 21-22).

The Texas Two Step, hosted by the Maverick Region, was the second PCA Club Race and solo HPDE of 2022 at Eagles Canyon Raceway on October 15-16. We had a great turn out with over 60 racers in 17 different classes of amazing Porsche racing machines. We covered decades of Porsche race cars, from a vintage 1977 911 to a 2018

Patriot PAWS thanks Maverick PCA

Patriot PAWS Service Dogs would like to thank our wonderful friends at Porsche Club of America: Maverick Region for almost 5 years of ongoing support to our mission!

Patriot PAWS is a Rockwall, TX based National 501(c)(3) Nonprofit that trains and provides Service Dogs at no cost to disabled American Veterans, and others, who suffer from Mobile Disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and / or Post-Traumatic Stress. Patriot PAWS operates through four main programs – Rockwall Training Facility (est. 2006), Texas Department of Criminal Justice Inmate Training Program (est. 2008), Dallas-Fort Worth Puppy Raising Program (est. 2012), and Texas A&M University: Patriot PAWS of Aggieland (est. 2013). Each Patriot PAWS Service Dog takes 18 – 24 months to train at a cost of $35,000.

The Mavs have supported Patriot PAWS in various ways over the years – hosting Service Dog Demonstrations, Charity Drives, attending their benefit gala, and most recently, hosting their November luncheon at Patriot PAWS on November 5th, 2022.

The Mavs set out for a drive on the brisk fall day and ended at Patriot PAWS’ Training Facility in Rockwall to support the organization’s cause. While group members enjoyed lunch, Founder & Executive Director of Patriot PAWS, Lori Stevens, performed a Service Dog Demonstration with her Service Dog, Pierce – a 5-yearold Black Labrador Retriever. Campus Tours and Puppy Play followed the educational demonstration.

“We enjoyed having our friends from PCA: Mavs join us for the afternoon,” said Stevens. “It’s always a rewarding experience being able to show our supporters how their generous donations are utilized.”

Since starting, Patriot PAWS has made invaluable additions to their Rockwall Campus such as a state-of-the-art Kennels Facility, a fully equipped Veterinary Clinic to care for all dogs within the program as well as placed Service Dogs, an

ADA and wheelchair accessible Veterans House for Veteran/ Service Dog Teams to stay at during reaccreditations, and, most recently, an Administrative Office Expansion. “These additions and expansions allow us to serve more Veterans in need, and are only possible because of our many generous donors, including our friends at PCA: Mavs,” said Stevens.

Since Patriot PAWS’ inception in 2006, over 400 dogs from the program have been placed and there are Veteran/ Service Dog Teams located within 40 states. As of November 2022, there are 70+ Veterans waiting to receive a Patriot PAWS Service Dog.

Women Behind the Wheel: A Return to PCA Palooza

I’m not opposed to returning to old favorites, but my husband will tell you I prefer trying new experiences. In 2021, I had the audacity to take a long weekend off during holiday hair season for my first PCA Palooza in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I suppose only a hairstylist with retirement on the mind does something like this. Now, I can’t imagine missing one!

vendors and a Saturday tech session too. More than just a meal, Saturday’s banquet features a weekend wrap-up presentation, car show awards, and plenty of door prizes.

Before attending last year, we asked many questions of those who had been. While there, we spoke to several Mavericks experiencing the weekend several different ways. If PCA Palooza is on your radar for 2023, it’s not too early to begin your planning.

If you haven’t been, or this is the first time you’re hearing of this event, it is a multi-region PCA event in Northwest Arkansas, aka “Little Switzerland,” every second week in November organized by the White River, Cimarron, and Ozark Regions. The title sponsor is Porsche Tulsa.

Since 2005, this four-day event brings in PCA members from across the US. After canceling Palooza in 2020, the 2021 event attracted about 360 cars, nearly 600 people, from about 14 states. This year, looking at the registration list (this is written prior to the event,) I see folks from 30 different PCA regions. In October a gentleman posted numbers for 2022 on the PCA Palooza Facebook site: 383 cars and 692 people from 12 states.

But what exactly is Porsche Palooza, other than two words that make my non-car friends giggle or roll their eyes? It is three days of scheduled tours that leave each morning: six on Thursday, 11 (plus one ladies only) on Friday, and 11 on Saturday. You can sign up and attend one per day.

There are Friday and Saturday evening social mixers and banquet-style dinners. There is a Thursday night ladies mingle and tea, a Friday night bingo, a Saturday Parade of Porsche Power through town, a Saturday afternoon swap meet, and a Saturday people’s choice car show. There are goodie

Before I offer tips shared with me, let me begin with some of our first-year mistakes we corrected for 2022. First, we didn’t set up an account and log into the website the minute it opened to register for some of the drives. They fill up fast! Second, we took only one car. As passenger, I took in the incredible fall color in the scenic mountain terrain around Eureka Springs, but I missed the spirited, twisty driving. Third, we did not drive or see the parade through town because we stood on the wrong street after taking too long for lunch. Fourth, we didn’t have a bucket and other essential cleaning supplies when Pat decided last-minute to enter the car show. And fifth, we drove up through Tulsa on a Wednesday to dine at a favorite Irish pub resulting in driving in the dark (much faster than I would like) to stay ahead of a storm. There are deer up there, people!

The Best Western Inn of the Ozarks and Convention Center hosts the event providing accommodations for those who book up to a year in advance. Check-in and most events begin at the convention center located at the back of the property. As early as 5:00 pm Wednesday, one may pick up any pre-ordered merchandise with a driver packet containing dining wristbands, tour schedules, and other helpful info. All drives depart from here after brief driver meetings. There is a merchandise room for those who wish to purchase available wearables and mementos. Public restrooms and a hospitality room are also located here. The large

For those living a more spontaneous lifestyle, it is possible to wait until early October 2023 to plan your trip. Your challenge may be finding accommodations. This event can fill the entire area that weekend. In 2021, we booked a hotel room in August at the other Best Western. It had a fantastic breakfast and offered us a quick walk into town. It changed ownership and eliminated breakfast, so we chose a cabin for 2022. If not at the host hotel, some friends like staying in an historic downtown hotel, others rent cabins, and a few find other local accommodations.

I think most attendees arrive Wednesday or Thursday, but if you have to work, you have to work. Some Mavs travel up in groups, some take highways, and some find the fun routes! Driving the Talimena Scenic Drive (54 miles from Talihina, OK, to Mena, AR) and the Pig Trail (19 miles of AR-23 from Clarksville to Brashears) are as fun as the event itself. Maybe someone will tell you they’ve driven from our area to Eureka Springs in about five highway hours, but Coop and I selected the

8.5-hour route with a pet-friendly night in Fort Smith.

The organized tours vary in length from 24 to 209 miles, with various scenic and meal stops. Some tours cater to specific interests such as the Wine Country Tour, the Safari Tour (for high-clearance models only,) and the Coffee and Cuban Tour for ladies only. Some dip into Southwest Missouri. All tours depart between 7:45 am and 10:30 am.

Most friends signed up for tours and meals, but I met a few fellow Mavs who preferred to do their own thing. Since they’ve attended the event so many times, they slept

in, devised their own drives, and sampled unique dining experiences in town. “Downtown” is about two streets, but there appear to be neat finds heading in all directions out of town. We took a night last year to sample as many establishments as possible downtown – a glass of wine here, an appetizer there, a dessert at yet another spot. Some folks we spoke with began their holiday shopping during some of the free time. We enjoyed time meeting new people, and I recommend not overbooking yourself.

One morning, before our drive, we headed west on Highway 62 to Thorncrown Chapel, designed by renowned architect E. Fay Jones. Like the chapel in Hot Springs, it is a wooden structure rising 48 feet with 425 windows and more than 6,000 square feet of glass in a woodland setting. It opens at 9:00 am, there is no admission (donations are accepted,) and one should check to see if a wedding is booked before stopping by, especially on a Saturday (https://thorncrown.com).

Sitting on a shelf in Pat’s office is a fancy trophy for winning his category in the 2021 Shine and Show people’s choice car show. I’m pretty new to shows, but this one had plenty of eye candy. Since I’m planning a relaxing, scenic visit with my puppy this year, I am not entering the show with my sexy Beast after her makeover. I still will pack a few detail supplies as there are nearby self-serve carwashes.

It wouldn’t be right to end this article without including tips on what to wear or bring. It’s pretty casual and the weather really dictates wardrobe. A few folks took the opportunity to look a bit nicer for the Saturday night festivities – I saw a few sports coats and dresses. It doesn’t hurt to have an ice scraper, detail kit, driving gloves, and some reliable outerwear. If you pack your schedule tightly and your lodging doesn’t include breakfast, a cooler of water and some on-the-go nibbles are a good idea too. My best tip? Everyone should experience PCA Palooza at least once.

Event 9 day started with the threat of hard rain all day. Although drive to, set up, tech and course walk were all in the rain, it stopped and held off so everyone got dry runs.

We got only about half the usual Porsches at this event and there are some year end Championship Points battles still to be decided.

A Visit with Tyler Mavericks at The Car Barn

Members of the Porsche Club of America often hear “it’s not about the cars, it’s about the people.” That was brought to life on October 22 when members from throughout the Maverick Region met in Tyler for our most recent away-from-the-Metroplex get together. Folks driving from the D/FW Metroplex gathered at the Buc-ees in Terrell and departed en masse to meet with our East Texas contingent in Tyler.

The Hibbs family hosted the group of 81 people at their garage for coffee, lunch, a tour of the amazing cars, and a best-laptime competition on a racing simulator. Most importantly, our hosts generously provided the refreshments so the $25 registration fee could go directly to supporting a scholarship program for automotive tech students at Tyler Junior College. Billy Hibbs provided a tour of the collection, with in-depth details of the cars and their significance, the restoration that was undertaken, and the titles that they have won. Tisa Hibbs and her mother, Phyllis Weiss, entertained the guests while ensuring all their needs were met, and Stratton Hibbs coached drivers on the racing simulator to help each get their personal best time and provided encouragement if they spun out or ran into the armco barrier and trashed the 911 RSR.

fees, Maverick Region President announced that the Region would add $1,000 to that amount. However, it was quickly amped up by Chris Sorrells, who raised his hand holding a $100 bill and challenged the attendees to match his donation in order to raise another $1,000. My hand flew up into the air along with those of many others, and we quickly collected another $1,160. Pledges were made for another $2,000, led by Thomas Michael who sent a check for $1,000. With the Club providing an additional $1,000, TJC will receive $7,000. And, the fun hadn’t even begun.

Folks divided into two groups – while one got a guided tour of the remarkable cars, some with notable pedigrees and several which have won many prestigious awards at concours events, including Best In Show at the 2022 Concorso Italiano during car week in Monterey, California and the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Triple Diamond Award, the other group raced each other on the simulator. During lunch, Mitch Andrews, TJC Vice President for Institutional Advancement & Chief Advancement Officer, expressed his appreciation for the club’s donation and discussed how it will be used to assist students to purchase tools and cover tuition, as well as other programs to help students become successful in their future careers with little or no college debt. After lunch, the two groups switched places. In addition to the cars, there were fantastic posters, books, and trophies and other automobilia to peruse, such as a Cushman mini-bike.

When the dust settled on the simulated race at Brands Hatch, two winners stood clear. Grant Thomas smoked the field in his group with a time of 52.1 (which he then beat by nearly 3 seconds on an unofficial lap after the competition ended), and Brandon Ashton (54.8) edged out Matthew Ardaiz 55.1, proving that there’s magic in driving on the back roads of East Texas. Grant and Brandon each

won a $100 gift card donated by Park Place Porsche. It goes without saying that the wonderful time the group enjoyed could not have taken place without our gracious hosts. Not only do they enjoy sharing their impressive collection, but they made everyone feel at ease and if they were in their own home. I know I speak for all that attended when I say, although they call their facility The Car Barn, it felt like we were at The Car

Palace. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for attending and, especially, Chris Sorrells who helped us more than double our contribution to students at TJC.

We first met at a Maverick Board meeting shortly after I had become President in 2020. As we went through each Chairperson’s update, I realized I didn’t really understand where Club Racing and HPDE fit in. I’m admittedly no track guy, so what is Club Racing? David suggested we meet for coffee one day and he would walk me through it. So, meet we did, at one of my favorites, 1418 Coffee House, in downtown Plano, and David did his best to explain.

Let me tell you, if you have never attended a PCA Club Race you need to. Heck, thanks to David, we now have two on the National calendar at Eagles Canyon. From North Dallas it’s only a 75-minute drive and we all know we like to drive, right?

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” . . .

Bill Kruder: You have been an enthusiast since 1986, but when did you join PCA?

David Hodges: I joined PCA and the Lone Star Region in Houston in 2005. We moved and transferred into the Maverick Region in 2006. As fast as I could (laughing)!

BK: Ok, let’s start with where you are from?

DH: Let’s see. I was born in Riverside, California, which is about 50 miles southeast of L.A. My dad was a military guy so we moved a lot, having tours in Europe, New York,

and back to L.A. During my high school years, we lived in Fairfield, CA, home of Travis Air Force Base, which is about halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento.

BK: How about college?

DH: Interesting enough, fair to say, I was a bit of a hellion as a kid, so my dad thought it best he get me out of California, and sent me to the University of Oklahoma (laughing).

through the years it changed hands a few times, finally being part of JP Morgan. I stayed with them till 2009 when I saw the end coming so made the change to Wells Fargo, which I’m still with today.

BK: I know we have a bit of the same love for Chicago?

DH: Oh yes (smiling), I love that city. I commuted from Dallas to Chicago for a year back in 2008. I had an apartment at 680 North Lake Shore Drive, aka the Playboy Building, near the Navy Pier.

BK: So tell me how did you and Donna meet?

DH: Like I said, I had moved to Houston in the late 70s and she and I lived in the same apartment complex. We went to the same fitness center. One day I finally asked her out and we dated for nearly 10 years before getting married in 1995.

BK: And you have a daughter?

DH: We do. Kate is now 25. She went to UT Austin and still lives there working for IBM.

BK: I see. And what did you study?

DH: My undergraduate degree was in Finance and Economics; I then got my MBA in Business Administration.

BK: So how did you end up in Dallas?

DH: After graduating I took a banking job in Houston and lived there from 1978 until moving here in 2006.

BK: Tell me about your career.

DH: Kind of interesting. In the banking world I actually started with Texas Commerce Bank in 1978, and

BK: Let’s switch gears and talk cars. What was your first car?

DH: Oh man! Of all things it was my mom’s ‘64 Plymouth Valiant; I did sell it later on for $75 (laughing).

BK: What was next?

DH: (smiling) Not sure why but as soon as got my first check I bought a brand new ‘79 Chevy Nova.

BK: What was your first Porsche?

DH: It was back in 1986. Funny, it was almost a 928 - I took it out for a test drive and it quite frankly

scared me. It had so much power. So, long story short, I bought an ‘83 944 and I had that until 2004. Then I traded the 944 for a white 2000 Convertible 996.

BK: And today?

DH: Back in 2014 I bought our 2012 991S Cab. It’s my daily driver, and if it’s not raining, the top is down year round. Hey, we live in Dallas why would you not (laughing)?

BK: How did you get so involved in racing?

DH: After I bought the ‘00 996, I would go out on drives on some of the local Farm-to-Market roads, and one day I thought “I like to drive fast but I need a controlled environment.” This was when I was living in Houston, so I joined the Lone Star Region in 2005 and attended a DE at Texas World Speedway in College Station, and the addiction began.

BK: How about Club Racing?

DH: As I progressed through DE back in 2007, I became an instructor, then a team lead into the Advanced team, the top group. Then it was time to go racing head to head, so in 2010 I began my Club Race career, with 170 starts now under my belt.

BK: So how many races or track days a year are you involved with?

DH: Let’s see. I do five DEs a year, five Club Races a year, and as a PCA National Steward I work five other Club Races.

BK: Where do you operate you two spec racers from?

DH: I have the ‘02 Spec 996 at Motor Sport Ranch and the ‘09 Spec 997 at Eagles Canyon.

BK: What advice would you have for someone wanting to get into Club Racing?

DH: Don’t wait another day. I wish I had started doing HPDE and Club Racing earlier. It is a great community of people, not to mention the excitement and challenge of driving a magnificent Porsche on any racetrack in America.

Motorsport Mike: Fall Update 2022

Another exciting year of North American Motorsports has come to a close, and once again Porsche continued to earn its way onto the podium. In IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Series, Porsche had representation in the newly formed GT Pro (PRO) and the GT Daytona (GTD) classes.

In the GT Pro class, there were nine manufacturers contesting for the 2022 championship: Porsche, Chevy (Corvette), Lexus, BMW, Ferrari, Acura, Mercedes-AMG, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin. Team Pfaff MotorSports of Canada, with the distinguishable red-plaid-liveried 911 GT3R, repeated where they left off in 2021 by claiming this year’s manufacturer, team, and driver’s class championships, with Ausie driver Matt Campbell and French driver Mathieu Jaminet. In the GT Daytona class, Porsche finished 4th as a manufacturer behind BMW, Mercedes, and Aston Martin. However, drivers Ryan Hardwick and Jan Heylen of team Wright Motorsports finished second amongst drivers in their Porsche 911 GT3R.

Within the Michelin Endurance Cup’s four races at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta, Porsche finished atop the GT Pro class manufactures spot just three points ahead of Ferrari. I’m also very excited to report that local Maverick Region pro racer Don Yount (Inaugural “Meet The Driver” – see Slipstream Online Oct. 2021) finished the season’s GTD class edging into the top quarter of all drivers (14th/53) in his team NTE/SSR Lamborghini.

The 2023 season promises to be exciting for Porsche. The new LMDh/GTP Porsche 963 will make its debut competing in both IMSA and WEC (World Endurance Championship) races. Team Penske will take the reins of the factory machine, with several other customer teams racing the new 963. Additionally for 2023, Porsche will be running a new GT3R in IMSA races with plans to compete for class wins at Le Mans and the WEC Championship in 2024. So stay tuned and buckle up for some exciting racing with the greatest brand in motorsports.

Recap: Unpaved Tour to Fredericksburg Oktoberfest

In an attempt to get owners of 4-door Porsches to experience firsthand how these vehicles perform in more adventurous situations,

although it was not clear how long ago they had last been maintained. The highlight of the tour came at about ½ hour in, where the group crossed the

rare. Due to lack of recent rain, the roads were pretty dusty, so it didn’t take long before we were all covered with a fine layer of reddishbrown Hill Country soil. We also kept the speeds down below 30 mph because some of the roads were pretty rough.

Maverick Region again hosted a drive consisting of a mix of paved and unpaved roads, starting in Mason, TX and ending at the annual Oktoberfest celebration in the historically German city of Fredericksburg. The route we took is described on several websites as the “Texas Hill Country Overland Route,” although we took only the last 80 or so miles of the full 190mile route due to time constraints.

A total of 10 vehicles, mostly Cayennes and Macans, with an Audi SQ7 and a Subaru Outback for variety, met at the Lowe’s Market in Mason on the morning of October 1. After a driver’s meeting and radio check, we headed south and soon ran out of pavement. The roads were all public, and maintained by the county,

James River. No, there was no bridge over the river – we drove through the river, whose bed was comprised entirely of limestone (at least where we crossed), and was a bit shallow this year (less than a foot deep), but made for some great photos.

After the crossing we stopped briefly on the opposite bank for more photos before we headed out again. The roads were no more than a lane and a half wide, so we made sure to move as far to the right as possible when we encountered oncoming traffic, which thankfully was

We saw deer and livestock along the way, crossing several cattle guards, which kept the cattle on the property, but did not prevent them from wandering into the road. Ultimately, the cattle and the SUVs kept a respectable distance from each other, and the group arrived at the end of the unpaved section just in time for our scheduled lunch stop at the Doss General Store and Café in (where else?) Doss, TX. Which, by the way, was the only dining establishment between Mason and Fredericksburg on this particular route. The café has a surprisingly wide variety on the menu, including beer and wine (although since we were still “on the clock,” we did not partake) and live music on Friday and Saturday nights, so if you are ever in the area, check them out!

During lunch, our sweep vehicle, driven and navigated by Mary Anderson and Tom Cundari, was discovered to have developed a tire leak. Fellow participants Jason McClure and David Badashian

jumped in to help remove the tire and mount the spacesaver spare. Mary and Tom had to leave the group, but made it to a tire store on the way north and were able to get a replacement, so they didn’t have to drive all the way back to Denton on a donut! Thanks to Jason and David for their efforts!

After lunch, the rest of the way was on paved county roads, but still curvy and fun to drive, with more livestock, cattle guards, and blind crests to keep us on our toes. We got a few nice views of Enchanted Rock before finally heading south into Fredericksburg. A few more folks left the group in town, but the rest continued to the Gillespie County Fairgrounds to take the parkand-ride shuttle to Oktoberfest, as parking availability downtown is spotty at best. Oktoberfest itself was a great time, as usual, with no shortage of German food

and drink, souvenirs, live music, and probably the largest number of people wearing lederhosen and dirndl skirts in one place this side of the Atlantic.

If any of this sounds interesting, there are plans afoot for a bigger and better version of this tour in May 2023. Hill Country Region, with cooperation from Maverick Region, is planning a spring multi-event weekend, based in Fredericksburg, which will include your choice of a traditional paved tour for the 2-door Porsches, or the full-length version (Marble Falls to Fredericksburg) of this unpaved tour for stock Cayennes and Macans, or a more rugged tour to and through Hidden Falls Adventure Park, aimed at off-road capable (read: lifted and/or with modified off-road wheels and tires) Cayennes and other AWD vehicles. Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

It seems like I was one of the very few that didn’t attend PCA Palooza this year, and while I heard that it was crowded and the leaves had already changed, everyone I’ve spoken to is planning to go again next year. I think the drives and dinners are certainly a draw, but I believe it really comes back to the people. Our region continues to grow every year, and certainly some of that is due to the influx of people from the west, but it can’t just be that. As much as I love the brand and all the colors and customizations, the cars don’t drive themselves. At least not yet.

I was able to make it to Luftgekühlt this year in Long Beach. There was certainly some eye-candy out there, but after a sweep or two through the venue, we’d seen it. There were some truly one of a kind cars, but it was only really special because we had the rest of the Porsche lovers in attendance to share it with. That’s the way a lot of the events seem to go. We have some fun with our cars and then we want to gather and compare stories and while you can tell your car stories about your friends, it’s usually a little less rewarding. This year has been the Maverick Region’s 60th year

in existence. Carey has shared the history of the club, the milestones and people that have made Maverick region what it is. And we’ve crammed quite a bit into those 60 years. We will celebrate Founder’s Day this month. We’re celebrating the Founders that had the initiative to make this all happen and it’s mostly likely much more than they could have imagined. So here is to our charter members: Jim & Marge Ables, Jeff & Alverne Horsfall, Manson & Suellen Mathis, Bob Barnet, Doyle Bush, Buzz Rowell, Bob Middleton, Don Muncy, Stan & Jan Simm, John & Sue Starnes. Thank you for your enthusiasm. We hope you’re proud of what we’ve become. These are the people that helped make the PCA slogan of “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people” come to life. Without the efforts of our founders events like Palooza and Luftgekühlt might not exist.

So if I don’t see you at Rennsport in a year or so, hopefully I will see you at one of the many great events we have here in North Texas. If you’re new to the club, welcome. Come to an event, who knows what we’ll do next. Until then, Enjoy the Drive (and the conversations)
