Board Botschaft: Bringing 2023 to a close...what’s next? by Bill Kruder, Region President Once again, I will be the Maverick Region’s President effective January 1, 2024. Yes, this is my fifth term and yes, there are fewer things I enjoy more than serving in this role. Many ask me why I do it. Two reasons come to mind. First: you, the member. We have the most enthusiastic group of people you could ask for. That makes it easy because we enjoy similar things and love being out with people and our Porsches. Second: it’s the team I get to work with and that I could not do any of this without. From the one-off volunteer, the chairperson for your events, and of course, the MRPCA Executive Officers Michael Hays, V.P, Olga Taylor, Secretary, and Chris Flaugh, Treasurer. All but Michael will be starting their fifth year. Carey Spreen elected not to return as V.P. after serving four years with us to open the opportunity for other worthy Mavs. Many of you don’t know but Carey has been a Maverick twice; from 1986 to 1989 and again since 1998. During his tenure he has truly done it all. He is not going away and will be taking a couple of different roles this year. When you see Carey out with us, take a minute to thank him for making our club what it is. THANK YOU CAREY Every year we look for opportunities to improve our membership experience. Let’s start with our board meetings. We adopted a virtual meeting process in 2020 and basically two of every three meetings are virtual, with the third in person, using that meeting to celebrate recent accomplishments. Then, how about Founders Day? Many of you will never forget the RAIN of 2022. But for you new members, for years, it was an evening event. A few years ago, we moved it to a daytime family-friendly event with multiple opportunities to connect, and it just grows bigger each time. Our registration grows every year to nearly 500 members. Now, if you missed Founders Day 2023, you missed a couple of things. One, some incredible food, including Hutchins BBQ and Pizzeria Testa. Two, the recipient of the 2023 James Shoffit Award, Maverick Member Wes Pettinger. Be sure to look for the recap in our upcoming Slipstream in February. Then, let’s talk about our All Member Party. Debi Kruder, our Special Events Chair, has already been planning the 2024 event, which will be Sunday, March 24 at a new venue, Oak + Ivy in Aubrey. Registration will open in the New Year. Lots more to be shared in the weeks ahead. 2 December

Let’s talk about membership. We had another record year, surpassing 4,000 total members. Based on Primary member numbers, we are now the THIRD largest Region in PCA. Let’s not forget we won the GREATEST ACTUAL GROWTH award in all of PCA for 2022, and as of this writing we are in contention once again for 2023. A big thanks to Beckie and Tom Gomer, our Membership Chairs, for all they do for our club. Lastly, as you read this issue of Slipstream, it is the last issue that our Editor, Kurt Scaggs, will be producing. Kurt has been our Editor for nearly SIX years and he has produced several award-winning issues along the way. Not only has Kurt put this puzzle we call a magazine together, he has produced nearly all our club event ads. So, when you see Kurt out with us, take a minute to thank him for making Slipstream the treasure it is to read month after month. THANK YOU KURT So, as we begin to think about 2024, we will continue to keep the safety of our members a top priority. I thank you for your kindness to one another as we look forward to another great year. Debi and I are honored to serve you and we look forward to seeing you all soon.

Maverick of the Month

sponsored by Autobahn Porsche Selected by Pat Carmichael, Maverick Region Volunteers Chair

November: Anjan Shenoy Anjan Shenoy is our November Maverick of the Month. “Join the PCA”. This was the first advice Anjan received after he bought the car in July 2022. Anjan has since realized the group is a throve of knowledge, events and people. The saying that “it’s the people is so true here” and since joining he has got to make friends with other owners, mechanics, dealers, photographers, car collectors, race car drives, coffee lovers. Also the car got quickly adopted as part of his family (they named it ‘donut the targa’) his 2 daughters love “camping” in the boot!

December: Rishi Burke Rishi Burke is our December Maverick of the Month. Rishi has been a Maverick since 2020. Since joining the club, Rishi has been active in many events, and became part of the trio that runs our Mavs & Mochas monthly event at the beginning of 2023. In addition to taking this on, he also has played a part in acquiring auction items for our annual Hope House Silent Auction. Please join us in congratulating Rishi for being December’s Mav of the Month.

Rennsport Reunion 7 Recap: 2023 Laguna Seca by Paul Moseley When Bill Kruder asked me to write a short review of the 2023 Porsche Rennsport Reunion 7, I began thinking about a way to start it. Where do you begin? Those of you who made the trip to WeatherTech Raceway

Laguna Seca, outside of Monterey, CA, know I didn’t over-sell it in my Facebook photo posts weeks before RR7. If you were there this year, you were part of the crowd of a reported 91,000 Porsche fans who watched 300 historic Porsches descend the famed Corkscrew. They were fast, but the 37 current-generation Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America GT3s were faster, way faster. The Porsche tractors were way, way slower. Laguna Seca is one of my favorites, a perfect fan’s track if you like to wander the display and race paddocks. Porsche had prized and incredibly rare historic race cars in the TAG Heuer Heritage Display, so you could be up close and personal with the 1949 356 Gmund, the 1963 901 Prototype, Dan Gurney’s Porsche F1-winning racer, or shop for some pricey wrist bling just feet away.

8 December

photos by author The paddock was lined with some very serious, famous ex-Le Mans Porsche race cars, owned and raced by some very serious (and well-funded) vintage race teams. At the end of one row was one of my favorite

Porsche race cars, the ex-Richie Ginther Racing, Eliott Forbes Robinson-driven, E-Production 914. Current owner/driver Trevor Frank was more than happy to tell me all about the unbeatable 1972 SCCA legend that was disqualified for the ’72 National Championship for having the rear track ¼-inch too wide! Maverick Region member Don Yount raced his 911 S/R as well as his 906. Famous faces and their famous Porsches were everywhere: Seinfeld, Emory, Zwart, Oates, the RGruppe guys (Bob Aines and Mark Hannah were there), factory drivers past and current, and even (you guessed it) Magnus Walker, who wins for the most fanselfies ever. An off-track visit to Bruce Canepa’s incredible restoration shop started me counting 959s. I saw 11 undergoing restoration in the shop, and probably 12 more at the track, including one parked in

the dirt in public parking! All valued at about $2 million each. I could go on and on - you just can’t see it all. I missed plenty, including the Porsche souvenir shop, where some fans, from all over the world, stood

in line for over three hours for their swag. Instead I went over to the great folks at the PCA booth, whipped out the credit card, and got my T-shirts and some badges in about five minutes!

Left to right: Magnus Walker, always ready for a camera, 3 356’s pose, Maverick History and VP Carey Spreen and daughter Geneva, the late Ken Block’s 1400 horsepower Hoonipigasus, 1969 Porsche 908/2 Spyder, Beck replica Porsche 904-6 hot rod (review by none other than Magnus Walker on OPP).

Maverick Women Behind the Wheel: Fall Fun, Rain or Shine by Joann Talty There are many lines I remember from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” This one comes to mind when the weather starts to turn from unbearably hot to oh-my-gosh let’s get out and drive, drive, drive before the cold weather arrives. We women behind the wheel did just that this fall. On October 7, we added extra fun to the Revolver Tour. My pup and I had the pleasure of leading a spirited group of mostly Boxsters from Weatherford High School to the Granbury brewery in nearly perfect weather. We devoured freshlygrilled burgers while sipping one of their many brews, such as Blood & Honey Texas Ale, 817 Blonde, Oktoberfest, or Hatch Dot Com – a blonde ale with Hatch chiles. The Texas/ OU football game filled screens in a crowded corner of the property, a talented two-man band played familiar tunes, families with Having fun at the MWBTW fall events kids or pups played in open spaces, and a few of us were glued to our phones watching suspense-filled final quarters of our favorite college teams. Since it was an early morning for most of us, we left the brewery mid-afternoon to recharge at our hotel. That evening, we drove into the square to splurge on mouth-watering steaks at Eighteen Ninety Grille and Lounge. The next Saturday, we rose early and hopped into our cars to gather again. Registrar Wendy Shoffit joined a few ladies at Eagles Canyon Raceway for the Club Race and DE, while other ladies motored to Frisco for the annual National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) Mavs & Mochas. On that chilly but sunny morning, 10 December

photos by Paul Moseley and MWBTW members Pat Gouldy picked up Cinnaholic treats and joined Lisa Ward and me in setting up a MWBTW tent to meet women, share our fall events, and sell new caps with the remaining visors, t-shirts, and tumblers. For the second year, Lisa worked with members of the NBCF to raise funds towards the care boxes they send to women going through their cancer journey. This year we focused on providing tea, tumblers, and socks included in the kits. We raised $6,722, and the club contributed $778 to round it up to a nice $7,500. When some of the chilled attendees considered leaving, we quickly asked Paul Moseley for a group photo. He hopped up onto a folding chair and captured us with two pink vehicles Amanda Damore’s new Ruby Star Neo Cayman and Sonya Riley’s Metallic Rosewrapped Macan. We cancelled a ladies’ tech session on Saturday, October 21, due to the small number of women who signed up. Was it a lack of interest or an inconvenient date, time, or location? Maybe other events that day sounded more fun, or an “I have people for that” attitude kept interest low. In any case, we will try again. Let us know on our Facebook page what you’d like to learn and if a Saturday morning is feasible. There are plenty of useful things we ought to know! Feeling like it might be the last top-down day for a while, several women were “spotted” at the indoor/ outdoor Maverick happy hour on Thursday evening, October 26, at Tequila Social on McKinnon Street in Dallas. The skies opened up the very next night as if to say, “Sorry for such a hot, dry summer. Here’s the rain you’re owed.”

Pouring rain continued into Saturday, October 28, but it didn’t scare some of the women who attended the Sim Racing Demo at Classic Wine in Frisco. It scared me, and I wasn’t driving. After passing three wrecks from Plano to Frisco, I was ready for one of the mimosas Debi Kruder pointed out when I walked in. We continued driving into November with three weekends full of events. Over the November 4 weekend, some ladies drove the Patriot Paws Tour, and some showed up at the Second Annual Bruce Irvine Memorial Chili Cookoff. Next, many of our ladies headed north for the ever-popular Porsche Palooza in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, held November 8-12. Finally, registration filled quickly for the Women’s Garden Tour and Holiday Tea on November 19 at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Check the next Slipstream issue for a look at the Arboretum event and highlights from three December events (Cookie Swap, Holiday Light Parade, and Founders Day.) Stay connected with the Maverick Women Behind the Wheel Facebook group (https:// w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / groups/283955567068241) – 252 women strong as of this writing. If you’d like to know more about our MWBTW events or get more involved, drop Pat or Lisa an email at MWBTW@MAVPCA.ORG.

Maverick Women Behind the Wheel 2023 Woman of the Year It took our group of four a long time to select a female club member for the 2023 Woman of the Year. We’ve been talking about this award since the 2022 Founders Day and found it difficult to name just one hard-working woman who deserves special recognition for the countless hours she volunteers. We wanted the right person for the right reasons for our first award presented at the December 9, 2023, Founders Day Celebration. Our recipient has been a long-time PCA member and a Maverick Region member for six years. She attends a wide range of club functions with a smile on her face, ready to lend a hand anywhere needed. An educator in several realms, she will tell you she teaches people how to play well together. She is Olga Taylor, our board secretary since 2020. In the spring of 2021, Olga organized a few Plano Patio Pop-Ups. It inspired others to gather locally in small groups to drive friendships. She was also around as the Maverick Women Behind the Wheel group formed. She met with us in January 2022 to listen, offer support, and encourage us. We see Olga as an inspiration, lifting up all the female drivers with whom she meets. Pat Gouldy and I both recalled how and when we met Olga.

Wanting to meet other women drivers two years ago, Pat Gouldy figured the 2021 NBCF Mavs and Mochas would be the time and the place. Pat first met Wendy Shoffit who took her around and introduced her to several women including Olga. Pat clearly remembered Olga’s beautiful car, Baby, and her kind, gentle spirit when they spoke. Olga told her stories about her car and her involvement with the Maverick Region. Feeling so comfortable with her that morning, Pat was encouraged to continue her participation in the club. When my husband and I joined the Mavericks, I’ll never forget how she interacted with Pat – she flashed her lights at him in his car going the opposite way on Coit Road in Plano as if to say, “I see you… nice car… hello, friend.” We later met at an event, they recalled their cars and the light flashing, and she stated how she missed Porsche drivers doing that. Please join Pat, Lisa, Wendy, and I in congratulating Olga Taylor as the 2023 Maverick Woman of the Year. If you see her cruising around in Baby or Buddy, you know what to do – flash those lights to say hello! 11

PCA Club Race: Maverick Region ECR II Texas Two Step by David Hodges

photos provided by Alan Nusbaum, Kennin Foster, David Hodges, Wendy Shoffit

The Texas summer heat finally retreated in time for our fall Texas Two Step PCA club race at Eagles Canyon Raceway. We started the ECR II race weekend with a chilly beautiful north Texas sunrise. The HighPerformance DE drivers hit the track for their morning run group session, followed by 13 classes of Porsche

Wrapping up the weekend of racing, unofficial results have Daniel Shofner (SPB), Bill Miller (SP1) , Steve Coomes (SPC) and David Hodges (SP996) all winning National Championships in their respective class. We also wrapped up the Mid America Championship series at ECR. PCA Timing and

race cars in their first practice session. The cool dry weather helped some racers reset a few track records; GTC7 by Michael Williams, GTB1 by Shawn Keeler, SP996 by David Hodges on Saturday followed by Alex Williams on Sunday, and Alex Rezende in I class. Saturday’s solar eclipse was an added attraction. Save those eclipse glasses for the April 2024 total eclipse passing through Dallas. The Saturday evenings awards party held at the “Over the Top Bar and Grill” saw a good group of racers and race fans unwinding after a great day of racing.

Scoring will tabulate and publish those official final standing for 2023. Mark your calendar as we’ll be back at Eagles Canyon Raceway on May 25-26, and October 1213, 2024, for more PCA club racing. Big THANK YOU to our Maverick Region club race sponsors, racers, corner workers, race control team, the PCA National team, HPDE drivers, volunteers and ECR. We can’t do this without everyone helping with these events.

Maverick Marktpreis: 911 SC by Peter Wen

In the September 2018 issue of Slipstream, we reviewed the (then) red-hot 911 SC. The second generation 911 Super Carrera had an incredible 10-year run, more than doubling in value from 2008 to 2018. After a couple years of market stabilization, it once again continued its meteoric rise. Today Hagerty values a 1981 911 SC,

in “Good” condition, at $48,000, up 45% since 2020! The Super Carrera, or SC, was produced from ’78 to ’83, in the middle of the impact-bumper generation 911 production. With its superb 3.0L engine, a total of 57,890 SCs were produced.

Excellence magazine’s 2023-2024 Porsche Buyer’s Guide offered these price ranges:

Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder, Region President So, as I always say, this never gets old to me. Why, you ask? Well so often it’s just pure fate. Now, take this month’s featured person. I get invited to Chris Flaugh’s garage to watch the end of a Bring a Trailer (BaT) auction in which he has a special 993 auction about to end. So, I say, “Sure, sounds fun!” I arrive to find a half dozen other people there whom he had invited.

photos provided by Susan Harness and Jessica Barksdale Photography

BK: When did you move away? DH: Like most of us, that began with college, so that would have been the fall of 1976. But hey (smiling), I didn’t move that far, as I attended the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, 120 miles east on I-80.

About 5-10 minutes later, in walks Dave, and I make my way over to introduce myself. Come to find out we live about 10 minutes from each other. He’s a Porsche guy of course, and is a friend of Chris. Matter of fact, he will help with Chris’s car business if he’s in need of another set of eyes to check the prospective purchase. Needless to say we hit it off, we schedule coffee, get to know each other more and before you know it he’s rejoined the club and attending events.

BK: How about your job? DH: My first out of school was as a Programmer. From there I spent about six years with Frito-Lay; that was the early ‘90s. Then from there I spent the next 20+ years with GTE, which later became Verizon, in the telecommunications field. I was involved with a “startup” company for a bit before moving over to ClubCorp, now Invited, before retiring two or three years ago. BK: Tell me, where do you live now? DH: After raising our two kids in Carrollton we moved up to Prosper about 18 months ago.

BK: Let’s talk family . . . DH: Ah yes! Susan and I have been married for 37 years now. We have two kids: Jordan, our daughter, is 32, Ellie, Laura, Connor, Will, Susan, Jordan and Dave Harness living in Plano. Our son Connor is 30, married with two kids: Ellie, three, and Will is 20 BK: What did you major in? months. Connor lives in Houston in So here is the next in my series of DH: I was a double major in an area called The Heights. “conversations” I would like to share Computer Science and Psychology, with you . . . graduating in 1981. BK: How did you and Susan meet? DH: Susan and I were introduced in Dave Harness, enthusiast since 1976 the mid-‘80s through a mutual friend BK: And what direction did your Owner 1989 Carrera Targa here in Dallas. Strange that we were major take you? often invited to the same activities at DH: I will say I have utilized the Bill Kruder: So, where are you from? psychology part mainly on my family the same time!? It took me a while Dave Harness: I was born and raised (laughing), but no, it was the Computer in a suburb of Des Moines, IA, called Science field where I spent my career. Urbandale. Urbandale is about 15 minutes northwest of Des Moines, BK: So, after college what did you do just north of I-80. Back when I was a and where? kid it was kind of small, with 7-12K DH: Well, the first thing I did was “get people, but today it has grown to 45out of Dodge” as they say, and move 47K people. I was one of three kids to better weather (smiling). So, my living in what you might call a modest childhood friend and roommate in Dave Harness and Bill Kruder putting the home, compared to today’s standards. college headed south to Denton, Texas. “coffee” in CC&C Coffee, Cars & Conversation is proudly sponsored by:

to discover the sweet, beautiful lady Susan was (and remains so today!) and decided she was the one! BK: Ok, let’s talk cars now. First car? DH: That was in 1975, I bought it from my brother. It was a tricked-out 1972 VW Super Beetle. BK: I should back up for a second because before cars there were already motorcycles? DH: Oh yes (smiling)! My dad was a motorcycle guy, and when I was like two or three years old, he would put me on his lap, kind of straddling the gas tank, and take me for rides. I had my first minibike when I was six years old. From the minibike I progressed into motocross racing. BK: Were you into any brand? DH: Yes. I was very loyal to Honda. I migrated through a series of Honda motorcycles (after the first Mini-Trail 50) to an SL90, then an SL125, raced a CR125 (called an Elsinore), and enjoyed a Husqvarna WR250. I purchased a street bike that I rode into my third year of college. BK: Back to cars now. Why Porsche? DH: Well, like many of us, I was introduced to the brand as a kid. My best friend Greg (who would go on to be my roommate) and his dad worked on cars and he would often have Porsches. BK: First Porsche? DH: That was in 1983. It was a 1973 914 2.0 in Alaska Blue complete with a luggage rack. It was fun car, but it didn’t like the Texas heat with no air-conditioning, and it would vapor-lock at the worst possible times and places. BK: How long did you have it? DH: Not very long (half frown/half smile). It came to a tragic end. My parents were following me in an RV and they crashed into the rear, totaling the car.

one in Houston, and - wouldn’t you know it - the guy never shows up at the meeting place. The search continued and I started looking for a G-body car, specifically an ’87-’89 Targa, with the bulletproof 3.2L engine and the improved G50 transmission. I find one on eBay out in San Jose, a guy named Tom. We go back and forth, and he sends a few pics of the car. Eventually, I take a leap of faith, fly out, and drive it home. Jordi started early wrenching on Porsche!

BK: One last thing: I understand you have a love of music - more importantly, going to concerts? DH: Funny for a guy who can’t play an instrument. Yes, I do. Most days I start with the radio on and end that way. Specifically, I enjoy the ‘70s pre disco (laughing). But I also enjoy live concerts. I have seen The Rolling Stones in ’75 (Kansas City – with the Eagles as the opening act) and ’81 (famous rain show at the Cotton Bowl, with ZZ Top opening), Led Zepplin in ’77 (Minneapolis), Eagles ’94 (at Cowboy stadium), and many other bands along the way. I still have a bucket list of bands I’d love to see. I’ve now started buying vintage t-shirts of bands I have seen over the years. So far, I have about four. Another fun “what if I had not said hello”! Driving Friendships!

BK: What was next then? DH: Let’s see . . . the 964 was not introduced until 1989 – as a Carrera 4 in the US. This story happened before I purchased the ’89 Targa. So, after purchasing our first home in 1986, I got the Porsche bug again and found a 1976 911S Targa in Fort Worth. It’s the 2.7L mid-year car. Now mind you, Susan knew I was looking but not sure she knew how serious (smiling). So, I go see the car, love the car, drive home, pull into the garage with that fabulous Porsche rumble, and yes there she is: Susan, a stay-at-home mom with two kids; probably wondering who is this man (laughing)? BK: What about today’s car? DH: Well, fast forward to 2002 and again I’m looking for an air-cooled Targa. I always admired the 964, so I found 21

East Texas Tour: Tyler, TX meet recap by Doug Jacobson

photos provided by author

Good planning is the key to a successful event – unless you’re dependent on the weather. And, on Saturday, October 28, that lesson was illustrated once again. In this case, the plan was for Mavericks living in our core area, the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, to drive to Tyler and meet up with Maverick Region members and non-members who are part of the Porsche Owners of East Texas (POET) for coffee and bagels, drive the rolling and winding

Having organized the event, and knowing that the conditions weren’t quite as severe in Tyler, I plowed on, and as the dark faded into a rainy day, the rain dissipated to a light rain as I passed through Canton. The gathering of eight cars and a dozen folks that greeted me at Einstein’s Bagels grew to 18 cars and 30 people over the next hour. Most of the group was from the Tyler area, but it also

East Texas roads to Palestine, have lunch, and then make their way home. But Mother Nature had other plans. After a lengthy drought this summer in which the rain deficit neared 12 inches, that deficit was cut in half when the area was deluged by over six inches of rain on Friday and Saturday morning. With one more week of Daylight Saving Time, intrepid D/FW drivers leaving in the dark of early morning tried to make their way East to meet at Buc-ee’s in Terrell. They encountered some of the worst driving conditions imaginable in the pitch darkness – often hydroplaning and with poor visibility through the constant thumping of windshield wipers set on high, which resulted in less-skilled drivers (not Porsche drivers) spinning out and damaging their cars. Less than a half dozen members left their beds and made their way through the gloom to Buc-ee’s before deciding to turn back rather than continue another hour in those conditions.

included Maverick families from Mabank and Canton, and the Laus, who made their way through the storm from Carrollton with their dog. After coffee and bagels provided by the club, drivers got a safety briefing from Matt Ardaiz, who selected the route and recruited leaders and sweepers for the two group of drivers. Road conditions were wet from the light rain and mist, but the chip seal road surface provided a better surface

for those conditions, and everyone made their way to Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant in Palestine for a hearty meal cooked with fresh ingredients. While things didn’t turn out quite as planned due to the weather, it was a fun event for those who were able to make it. It was also successful because the registrants paid a $10 fee that was matched by the club to raise $1000 for scholarship for students enrolled in the automotive tech classes at Tyler Junior College. This is the second time the club held an event in Tyler with the goal of benefiting those future mechanics and technicians on whom we rely so that we can continue to pursue our hobby. We will continue to plan events to draw together folks from throughout our large Region, and plans are in the works for a Tour somewhere in between Tyler and D/FW in the spring or summer of 2024.

Mavs & Mochas November: The Shop Club, Dallas by Chris Cuyler With Palooza drawing many of our members out of town, it seemed likely that the number of cars would be less than normal at a Mavs & Mochas event, but 60 cars arrived and stayed to visit. The feature car was the 992 and 18 were in attendance. This month’s Mavs & Mochas was held at The Shop Club in Dallas, and this venue is one of my favorites. If you love to work on your own car, they have bays with lifts that members can reserve. If you don’t trust anyone or any machine to wash your car, they have bays where you can make the outside of your Porsche sparkle to that attention-grabbing shine. When you’re done with your hard work, be sure to stop by The Derby restaurant where Chef Dishman has spent countless hours perfecting his menu. I have never had any food in The Derby restaurant I didn’t love, and this morning was no exception. Especially for our Mavs & Mochas event, Chef Dishman created a buffet that included chicken and waffles, migas, tacos, donuts, pastries, vegetable frittatas, sausage, ham, avocado toast, and Matt’s

photos provided by author and Arjay Cando Badass Bacon. (Seriously, if you are a bacon fan, you MUST check it out!) Whether you’ve been to The Shop Club to work on your car, store your car, or admire other people’s cars, it’s an obvious choice to visit for the cars, but be sure to stay for the food at The Derby restaurant. The staff are always happy to welcome you for lunch, happy hour, dinner, and weekend

brunch. As their website states, The Shop Club is truly the Country Club for Gearheads. I would also add…for Foodies. Thanks to everyone at The Shop Club for being wonderful hosts to us and a special thank you to Chef Dishman, Therese, and all the staff of The Derby Restaurant for the amazing breakfast made especially for us! This was also our canned food collection month and Mavs donated 196 pounds of canned food. Thank you!

Maverick Region First: Sim Racing Demo by Robert Walton and Jason Brodigan, Sim Racing Co-Chairs The Maverick Region hosted a Sim Racing Demo on October 28 at the Classic Wine Clubhouse in Frisco. Breakfast tacos and beverages were enjoyed by all. A mobile Sim racing

setup was provided, and drivers ran the Lime Rock Park Classic track configuration in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport on the iRacing simulator platform. Driving time was limited so attendance was capped at 20 drivers. Sim driving experience for attendees ranged from those who had never driven a Sim, to some who are highly rated on iRacing. By the end, competitive fires started to burn and best lap times were being compared!

photos provided by authors

Leif Peterson, the Maverick Region’s resident “e Driver Education” (eDE) instructor, was also in attendance. He spoke about Sim racing and the national PCA Sim Racing program. The PCA Sim Racing eDE program is similar to PCA’s HPDE program. Leif is the chief instructor for our Region. After a successful first event, we are looking forward to scheduling another Sim demo after the first of the year, with even better Sim racing setups for everyone to try. We also are planning a “Meet the Drivers Happy Hour” for anyone interested in getting to know other Maverick Region Sim racers, whether you have previously driven a Sim or not. A big thank you to Wendy Shoffit for all the help in making this demo happen. We couldn’t have done it without her. Another thanks goes to the Kruders and the Maverick Region for supporting this program that we enjoy and want to share. If you are interested in Sim Racing, and don’t know where to start, or just need some help, we are here to answer your questions. Email us at simracing@mavpca.org.

There is No Substitute: Final words... by Olga Taylor, Region Secretary As a final word on my “There is no substitute” series, I selected member photos to tie up some loose ends. These photographs rocked my world when I saw them—maybe you will have the same reaction.

give you an opportunity to allow yourself to feel the sensation of experiencing Porsche as sassy and seductive. Imagine the joy of driving this wonderful Spyder on a winding country road. As the owner of a vintage Targa, I love to see them out and about. And, who does not get a rush when you roll up on a Porsche clad in Guard’s Red? The next set of Chad Wick photos show the sassy Porsches that seem to wink at us in order to gain our attention. For me, these Porsches peek around the corner with a sassy invitation taken from an old song, “I wanna rock with you.”

Let’s start with Michael Baynton’s pictorial on wheels plus Fuchs by Jason Aldon Olson. Without question, Porsche wheels are wonderful. As a novice concours entrant, I appreciate how these owners made them sparkle. Though 356s feature simplicity in their wheels, no other style would seem appropriate. Porsche owners have choices when it comes to wheels and there is no substitute for that.

photos credit members listed In the same vein, I found Chris Low’s Palooza night shots to be equally seductive. Vintage join modern for a grand time where all must agree that “there is no substitute.”

I conclude this series with thanks to members Michael Baynton, Chad Davis, Chris Low, Mark Puckett, and Chad Wick. Your marvelous photos serve as a capstone on my series. Editors note: I hope you join me in thanking Olga for a great journey through our members’ photos of our collective obsession. This unique project and perspective has According to the dictionary, seductive is defined as “tempting, attractive, and inviting.” On that basis, this stunning Mark Puckett photo depicts a Targa that meets all the criteria. Top-down sends a message of seduction by inviting us to savor the experience.

Come with me on a sensual pictorial journey that captures the essence of Porsche. Captured by Chad Wick at a recent Motoring Mavs at Mayo meet, these photos

been a huge undertaking and the result is something we can enjoy over and over. Thank you Olga, I can’t wait to see what you come up with next! -Kurt 31

Motorsport Mike: Side Trip from Rennsport Reunion by “Motorsport Mike” O’Hare As if attending Rennsport 7 wasn’t enough, the opportunity to visit Bruce Canepa’s legendary garage, museum, and store was well worth the short drive from Laguna Seca. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Mr. Canepa and his impact on Porsche and the racing industry, let me divulge a little bit of context. Bruce was born and raised in Santa Cruz, CA surrounded by cars at his father’s

dealership. By the age of 12, his father taught him how to drive everything from a 1929 Model A Ford (his first car) to a 10-wheel diesel rig. He moved onto bigger and better, having competed in IMSA GT, Sprint Car, Modifieds, the Trans Am Series, and Pikes Peak. Bruce has raced and podiumed with some of the most famous American drivers, like Rick Mears and Bobby Rahal. He’s experienced driving Porsches 934½, 935, 962, and a 917/10 (see photo) . . . just to name a few. Today, he is passionately involved in all aspects of his companies, from vehicle design and development to historical/collector car sales, restoration, and racing. After day 2 at Rennsport, we headed to Canepa’s 70,000 square foot automotive “nirvana.” Upon entering the facility (free of charge), we were greeted by an associate who explained how the facility was laid out. First floor: gift shop, show room (cars for purchase – yeah right), along with the workshop. The second floor was labeled as the “museum” and had a catwalk that overlooked the workshop. As we roamed the showroom, there must have been a dozen + cars listed for sale. To name a few: Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo, Porsche 917 Long Tail, Ford GT, Porsche 959s, Corvettes, and older Mustangs. Funny thing is, not one of these machines had an asking price.

photo by author As we made our way into the workshop, the walls were loaded with historic posters and impressive memorabilia. In my opinion, the real eyeopening experience came as we walked around the workshop. Words alone can’t describe what I saw! Exotic machines in various stages of assembly, disassembly, body work and painting prep; the mechanics’ white boards that had notations like “stop billing owner – he’s paid too much;” and a note written on one board that read “Work order #1289 - Seinfeld ☺ Porsche 934”. Numerous Ferraris, Porsches, Lambos, McLarens, and BMWs were strewn around the shop like a kid’s hot wheels playground. Even the famous Hudson Hornet from the movie “Cars” could be seen off in the distance. It wasn’t until midway through our self-guided tour that I came to realize (yes, I am slow) that the world’s best automotive artisans MUST work here to preserve and maintain these historic race and road cars. Upstairs was the “museum” portion of the facility (really, the entire place is a museum) that had an array of pristine machines. Tops in my book were a 1986 24 Hr. Le Mans Rothmans Porsche 962 driven by Jackie Ickx, Lola Indy Car, Audi R10 TIDI Le Mans Prototype, top fuel dragster, and even one of Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s Wrangler Chevy Monte Carlo NASCAR stock cars.

While Bruce Canepa might not be racing as frequently as he did a few years ago, he still found time to take his vintage Porsche 917/10 racecar out for some spirited laps around Laguna Seca. I was lucky enough to get a snapshot of him in the cockpit just prior to entering the track. One thing is for certain, the elite car owners his company services can rest assured with unwavering trust that the team at Canepa is the best in the industry! 35

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

It seems the heat has finally released its grip for good this year and as the leaves fall, the chance for a few more pretty drives presents itself. Eager pup that I am, I have taken the long way home a few more times than usual lately. For many of us, cars represent freedom, and from the moment I was permitted to enjoy that sensation of peace and (not so) quiet, I have enjoyed that feeling as often as I could. Early on, driving on an empty road in rural Louisiana was the epitome of relaxation and joy that few other things of that world could approach. Throughout the years, the cars and venues would change, but the act of driving for pure joy instead of as means to an end would bring me here. What I didn’t understand until much later was what adding a group of like-minded enthusiasts to the equation would do to one of my favorite things. After ten years with the Maverick region, I have been to quite a few events, made great friends and find myself in a place that 15-year-old me wouldn’t recognize. I really can’t say enough about the opportunities the Maverick region provides for connecting with other car lovers. We’re fond of saying “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people” and while the cars don’t hurt, the people make this work. This issue highlights a few of the things a new member could plug into to become more involved. Club race looks

like so much fun, and the stories you’ll hear will blow your mind. Autocross too, but unfortunately my skill does not run that deep. Sim racing might be more my speed, less chance I’ll have to apologize to someone for my lack of abilities. And while my Y chromosome disqualifies me from the MWBTW group, they seem to have a lot of fun. I happen to be more the coffee group variety, and boy do we have plenty of those to choose from. From Fort Worth to Flower Mound, you can find a weekly gathering and they are all worth a trip. Coffees at RAC, Mayo Performance and the monthly Mavs & Mochas offer plenty of variety to find a good fit. I think Pat Carmichael might only have lunches and coffees on his calendar, so if you have some extra time, he can probably direct you to a group near you. The photo on the cover reminds me how great it is to find a good group to be a part of outside of the usual stresses of life. It’s hard for me to imagine a world without vintage cars and endless miles of roads to play on and now, a great group of friends to enjoy it with. If you’re not, get plugged in to a group. With that, I will bid you adieu. It has been my absolute privilege to be your editor and part of such a great group. I hope to see you out there, and remember to Enjoy the Drive.
