Board Botschaft: Start Me Up!

Singer Mick Jagger’s words, ‘Start Me Up!,’ reflect the true sentiments of Porsches. We are spirited drivers who operationalize these words. For ideas on 2023, I asked members to share their New Year Resolutions. In words and pictures, this article provides inspiration to help jump start 2023 plans your Porsche(s).

The article covers one achievement, aspirations, and the basics.

Goal Achieved in 2022!

The goal of reaching a joyful milestone 99th birthday eclipses any Porsche achievement. Join me in sending a shout out to Brian Skelly’s mom. Happy 99th Birthday to Mom.

Andy Kay has a lofty goal for 2023, one that is a stretch for mere humans. Nonetheless, we are all pulling for you.

2023 Aspirational Goals

Aspirational goals are things hoped for—some things are beyond our reach. From the impossible (Cooper Christine Talty) to ‘doable,’ the next set of goals push us to big dreams.

Not a hater and parents, JoAnn and Pat may comply I simply can’t see how these tiny arms navigate a steering wheel.

Closer to becoming a reality, a few members aspire to add to the herd. These aspirations are within reach provided budget, availability and passing PPI (prepurchase inspection) come together.

Maverick of the Year: Keith Olcha

This person joined the Porsche Club in another region in 1991 (31 years ago). It wasn’t until October of 1998, transferring from Chicago, that he joined our Region.

This person took up autocrossing as his first club activity, driving his 1993 964 RS America. In 2000 he got involved with the DE Committee as the Tech Chair, as well as being the region’s Activities Chair.

In 2001 he stepped up his volunteering to DE Chair. Also in 2001 he decided that autocrossing wasn’t quite challenging enough, so he began his Club Racing career - once again in his RS America, later retiring the 964 in favor of a Spec Boxster.

In 2003 he was elected Region President, and remained in office for two years, including 2004 when Maverick Region hosted the annual Porsche Parade in Fort Worth.

Although he took a break from major leadership roles for several years, he has been a consistent DE coach (even helping at other regions’ events). He has recently even stepped back up as Co-Chair in the HPDE Committee. He was inducted into the Crest Club Class of 2020.

Needless to say we are thankful to have him, and proudly award Keith Olcha as this year’s Enthusiast of the Year!

Maverick of the Month sponsored

Vanessa has been a PCA Member for almost eight years. If you attended any of the Founders Day events back in December 2022, you might not know that it takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make it a successful event. Well, our 60th anniversary was no different. Part of that success each year has been the help of Vanessa. As the District Manager for Nordstrom’s, she helps kick off the day’s events when we host Mavs & Mochas at the North Park Mall location. Vanessa makes sure that the lot is free of other cars so when our Mav Members start arriving by 8:30, there are plenty of spaces for parking. Vanessa doesn’t stop there. She also opens the store early so that our Mav Members can get a jump start on their holiday shopping before the store is opened to the public. While shopping, the eBar is opened and ready to server coffee and food items. Vanessa has also held a ticket drawing for a few door-prizes. Thanks to Vanessa’s support on one of our most popular events each year, thus making the whole Founder’s Day fun and enjoyable. These are the things that keep our club Fueled By Volunteers. Please join me in Congratulating Vanessa as our Maverick of the Month.

Hope House Says Thank You: 2022 Christmas

Dear Mavericks,

Thank you for a beautiful 29 year relationship with Hope, Inc. I was first introduced to Lanean Hughes in 1994 when the Mavericks were racing at the Mineral Wells Airport. Maverick members Wendy and James Shofit, Linda Bambina, Clara Lewis, Bill Middleton, Tom and Annette Snodgrass (and many more) were instrumental in building our shelter in 2005. Thank you Maverick Area Porsche Club. Now Hope is a safe place for families to call home.

On Dec 18, 2022 we had a fabulous Christmas Party for 14 women and 16 kids. Thanks to your generous donation of $19,500, we were able to give every woman $100 cash for herself, plus $50/child. Additionally, we were able to spend $300+ on each person/child and purchase all the items on their wishlist. The Shelter living room was stuffed with packages. Santa Claus was here for nearly 2 hours passing out presents. We had Tears of Joy and Thank you’s from everyone. Several told me this was an “Unbelievable Christmas” and they had never experienced anything like this. I was crying too…….

Thank you. Your Club is making a difference for some very special families. - Lisa

HPDE: Why you should drive your Porsche on a race track!

Did you know that Porsche is the world’s largest race car manufacturer? With over 19 overall and 103 class wins, Porsche holds the record at the 24 Hours

memberships and track-day cars being offered. You don’t have to look far to be able to experience all of that with a limited investment right here in DFW. There used to be an ad that said “Every Porsche is a race car” . . . why not experience that with Maverick PCA?

We offer a program to get you on the track with your Porsche to experience it the way it was designed, especially with your level of experience in mind. We offer in-car instruction and coaching from certified driving coaches and our run groups are separated by level from novice to experienced. To learn more- please

of Le Mans, the world’s most famous sports car race.

In the Daytona 24 hours, Porsche has the most overall victories of any manufacturer with 22, scored by various models, including the road-based 911, 935, and 996. And they will be featuring a new car this year: the 963 Le Mans Daytona hybrid (LMDh) prototype, run by none other than Team Penske.

In Formula One, from 1983 to 1987, Porsche engines powered the cars that won the Championship for McLaren drivers Alain Prost and Niki Lauda. There were World Endurance Championships in 20152019. We could go on, but it would take another page to list all of Porsche’s racing accomplishments.

You may also have noticed the rise of club racetracks all over the country, with the concept of racetrack

HPDE, or High Performance Driver Education, refers to driving schools held on dedicated race tracks designed to teach drivers proper high-speed driving techniques. HPDE events are not racing. Cars on-track operate under strict “rules of engagement” which minimize the likelihood of dangerous encounters with other cars. HPDE’s encourage participants to drive within their ability and improve their car-control skills with each event.

Founder’s Day 2022: Family Affair

1 Day / 5 Events kicked off with Mavs & Mochas and concluded what was to be the biggest party in Maverick history: our annual Founder’s Day Family Affair. As December 10 approached, we were all geared up to what was our largest registration ever, with nearly 500 Mavs registered to celebrate our 60th Anniversary! We pulled out all the stops, thanks to our sponsor Porsche Grapevine, with some of the best food trucks in town, including the infamous Fletcher’s Corny Dogs, Pizzeria Testa, and Newman Style BBQ. Also present was plenty of Deep Ellum Brewing Co craft beer (thanks to our new Special Events Co-Chair, Stephanie Summers), Monkey Shoulder tastings, margaritas, sangria, and some old-fashioned lemonade too. We added lots of family fun, including

Tag Heuer was on site with their own boutique store, showcasing and selling their Exclusive Porsche Edition timepieces for the perfect holiday gift, as well as complimentary tastings while you discovered their collection. Just shortly after our Maverick DJ Chris Fernandez began and we were ready to welcome our nearly 500 guests, the sky opened and the rain fell hard. While some took shelter inside Porsche Grapevine, many Mavs continued to stand in line for great food and drinks under the comfort of their umbrellas. Folks enjoyed their corn dogs, funnel cakes, and taking in the great People’s Choice Car Show.

Bender the Balloon Artist, for our PCA Juniors and for our adults a big surprise: PCA National sent their embossing machine, operated by Milton Summers, who, one by one, embossed leather mouse pads to commemorate the special occasion.

As Maverick Ajai Cadambi summed it up on Facebook, “Wet or dry . . . Porsches don’t melt! Great day today despite the rain. Thanks to the Maverick Porsche Club for hosting. 60 years celebrated!”

12 February

Opposite page: Alan Bambina’s unique 356. We almost needed his canoe to get home. TAG Heuer was on hand with some compelling offerings. Below: Mavericks patiently wait in the rain for some yummy grub. Social Media Chair, was on site with Denton Cigar Co and VIsol Products while his son G.O. enjoyed the PCA Jr track. DJ Chris Fernandez provided some ambiance and Club President Bill Kruder had a smile despite the weather. Fletcher’s corny dogs were on hand. Marc and son Moss Mansell stay drier than their 1966 912. And finally, because RACECAR!

Equipe Rapide Autocross Series: 2023

Each year, we review, and update if needed, the Equipe Rapide autocross classes for Porsches. Since many of our participants also run some of the other 40 autocross events in North Texas, we try to keep our preparation and groupings consistent with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) groupings and Performance Index (PAX), the handicapping system that is updated annually, based on results from all over the country. This PAX Index also makes it possible to compare results across all classes.

For 2023, we still have our own Porsche Classes, built into the SCCA model used by our autocross host, Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club (https:// autocross.com). This year’s classes are very similar to 2022, except that the big Porsche Taycan remains in P3 and the Panamera has moved to P0. The first seven classes below are limited to street tires with a Treadwear Rating of 200 or higher.

PV is the Vintage Porsche class for all street-legal 356 and 912 models.

PH is the Heritage Classic Street class, parallel to the SCCA HCS class. All street legal 914 models and all 911 models to 1973 and 2.4 liters, both with up to 7-inch wide wheels, fit here.

P0 is unchanged, and is for all our four-door SUV and Panamera models.

P1 is for all the front-engine transaxle cars, i.e. all 924, 944, 968, and 928 models.

P2 is for the 1974-1994 911 (including 911 Turbo), 1995-2012 non-S 911, 2005-2009 911 Turbo, 1997-2004 986 Boxster/ Boxster S, 2005-2023 987/981/718 non-S/GTS Boxster and Cayman.

P3 is for the 2005-2023 Boxster S and Cayman S, 2011-2012 Boxster Spyder and Cayman R, 2004-2012 GT3, 2012-2021 991/992 (not including S or GTS), and 2005-2012 911 S, GTS, and 911 Speedster. The Taycan has been moved here for 2023 also.

P4 is for 2010-2023 911 Turbo, 2015-2023 Boxster Spyder and GTS, 2015-2023 Cayman GT4 and GTS, 2013-2023 991/992 S and GTS.

P5 is for highly modified or not-otherwise-classified (NOC) street legal cars, and tire treadwear ratings are not restricted. This picks up the 2013-2023 911 Speedster, 911 R, GT3, GT3 RS, GT2, GT2 RS, Carrera GT, 918 Spyder, etc. We don’t see them often but wanted to be sure they have a place to play with us.

P6 is for all race cars or non-street legal Porsches. We get some Club Race cars and Spec Boxster race cars that fit here.

In Focus: 2007 RUF RT12

Welcome back to another edition of the R & B project. As outlined in my first article (see the August Slipstream printed edition, page 32), this project was started to showcase the Rare and Beautiful cars of Porsche and its derivations that exist in our club. This time, we have a car in the “B” beautiful category - a 2007 RUF RT12 in Carrara white.

as well versed with the company. RUF was founded in 1939 in Pfaffenhausen Germany as a service garage and later a gas station by Alois Ruf SR.. By 1960, his son Alois Ruf Jr. had started working on the servicing and restoration of Porsche cars in his father’s garage. When Alois Jr. took over the business in 1974, he developed his ideas until he was able to produce his first RUF tuned Porsche in 1975. His first complete non-turbo model was produced in 1978 with the 911 SCR. In 1987 the RUF CTR came out and was the world’s fastest production car at the time. In 2007, they produced their first entirely unique model - the CTR3 using their own chassis and body. RUF started as a car tuner but is now listed as a car manufacturer using their own parts and are given a unique VIN # code (W09). Their cars are both beautiful and beasts on the road.

RUF was founded in 1939 in Pfaffenhausen Germany as a service garage and later a gas station by Alois Ruf Sr. By 1960 his son, Alois Jr., began working on the servicing and restoration of Porsches.

This RT12 was graciously provided by Patrick Conner and his company, HeyCoolCar.com. Per Patrick’s site, this car started life as a narrow body, 1st generation 997 chassis with only 13 RT12 examples ever built. There are other variants (“S” and “R” with their own production numbers). It has the “W09” vin number confirming it was built as a RUF. RUF received a body in white from Porsche, along with a crated motor and all other Porsche branded parts, unassembled. The company then substituted RUF manufactured parts and

Before we get into this particular car, I thought some background information on RUF is in order. While many of you may be familiar with RUF, I put together some information from the internet for those of us not

upgrades to match the specifications ordered. Some of the replaced body parts include: the rear quarter panels, front and rear bumpers, rear deck-lid and rear carbon fiber wing. The flat 6 engine is based

16 February

on the 996 3.6L Turbo Mezger engine, bored and stroked to 3.8L and 680 horsepower with a 6 speed manual transmission. They used new KKK turbo units, Mahle pistons, custom camshafts and larger throttle bodies. This car has an integrated roll cage, a hydraulic front suspension lift system and RUF ultralight (superleggera) wheels. There are also 2 air tunnels

(intakes) on the rear of the car to provide cooler air for the twin turbos. In place of the standard Porsche chronometer, this RUF has a sport comp boost gauge.

From Patrick and online articles, these are the specs I found on how this model performs: Top speed224 MPH, acceleration 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, 0-100 mph in 6.5 seconds, quarter mile 11.3 seconds @ 134

mph. But putting aside the stats on this car, isn’t it just beautiful?

Thank you Patrick for lending your RT12 for this article. If anyone else knows of a car that meets the rare or beautiful description as outlined in the August Slipstream article, please let me know and your car just might be shared with the entire club through our magazine.

Maverick Marktpreis: 964 RS America

The RS badge has always had a special meaning for Porschephiles. It stands for “rennsport,” which in German means “race sport.” The RS badge is a huge part of Porsche’s racing heritage. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the iconic ‘73 Carrera RS, in 1993, Porsche gifted us the RS America (RSA).

With only 701 examples produced between 1993 and 1994, this special edition was only available in North America. Based on the Carrera 2 coupe, RSA was all about light weight (and performance). It went on a strict diet and shed 77 lbs. It offered a minimalist interior

with no power steering, no door pulls, no radio, and no A/C. Only four options were offered: electric sunroof, Limited Slip Differential, radio/cassette stereo, and A/C. The rear seats were removed in the 1993 model year but returned in 1994. With so many parts removed, Porsche actually priced the RSA $10,000 below a fully equipped Carrera 2. That was the last time Porsche Marketing made that mistake!

Today, RSA is a bona fide Porsche collectible. Since the market bottomed out on air-cooled Porsches in 2020, the RSA prices shot up 55% the last three years!

FUN FACT: The RS America came with electric windows, same as all 964 911s. The much lighter manually-cranked windows were not used because that would have required expensive and time consuming re-certi cation and crash testing.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation

This month, as we begin the New Year (yes it is February), I would like to reminisce with you about a very special friend we had lost. When I met him, he was already battling cancer; frankly if I knew him when he was healthy I don’t think I could have kept up with him. We had a chance meeting a couple years ago at a Porsche Cars & Coffee on a cold blustery day in Addison as he drove by, with the rest of us standing in the drizzle. Since then I would see him out with us occasionally, always with a huge smile on his face! This might have been due to his 2015 Pure White on Espresso Turbo S. In more recent months I, and occasionally a couple others, would meet him up on the Celina Square for coffee and donuts. His family said this meant the world to him; heck, it meant the world to us to be able to sit and listen to his stories. He not only had stories, but he brought pictures, old Panoramas from the 60s, and racing programs from some of the best circuits in Europe.

So now, I’ll give you the opportunity, if you had never met Mitch, since nearly 1,800 of you are new members since this interview was finished. Here it is as captured in June 2017, in my series of “conversations”:

Voy “Mitch” and Marie (MA-ree) Mitchell, owner 2015 911 Turbo S , founding member of PCA West Germany Region in 1963 (the region was disbanded in 2008)

Bill Kruder: Ok, I have to ask: where is the name Voy from? Sounds like it’s of European descent?

Mitch Mitchell: Oh no. Don’t think my mom had any idea of where the name might have originated, but in those days everyone had two names, and I guess she liked Voy Jerome, so that’s what I was called.

BK: BK: Can’t say I have ever met a Voy before. Mitch: Well I hadn’t either until I went into the service and met another; he was an officer, so we didn’t really speak until about 5-6

Mitch: No, I just kind of said I could do it and learned. We used a new system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), which at that time was a leader in what was then called “MiniComputers.” Taking courses through the GI Bill helped fill in the areas I couldn’t learn on my own.

BK: And are you from here?

Mitch: No, I grew up in a small oil patch town called Eldorado, Texas, about 45 miles south of San Angelo. Our last assignment found us in San Antonio, where we lived for about 28 years, and in 2004 moved to Celina.

BK: So I understand you two just celebrated a milestone? Marie: Yes we did! In December we had our 50th wedding anniversary.

years ago. I was able to look him up and we finally spoke.

BK: So what branch of the military were you in? Did you stay in long?

Mitch: I was in the Air Force for 20plus years, and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1978.

BK: After you retired what did you do? Mitch: I got a job with H-E-B in the meat processing plant, on what we would call today the IT side of things.

BK: So you were kind of an IT guy in the Air Force?

BK: Where did you two meet? With your accent, Marie, you are not from “these parts”? Marie: I’m from Ireland, but as it turned out I was going to nursing school near London, and Mitch was stationed near London. Mitch: I was stationed at Chicksands, about 50 miles north of London. A friend I knew from assignment in Germany threw a party so that I could meet some girls, and Marie was there. This was February of 1966, and we married in December of 1966.

BK: Wow! That must have been a whirlwind relationship.

Marie: I guess you could say thatwe both worked crazy shifts too. When I was working nights, Mitch would be working days and vice versa, so we hardly saw each other.

Mitch and Marie Mitchell

Mitch: I think we probably spent the equivalent of two weeks together in all that time between meeting and getting married.

BK: Ok so let’s talk cars. How did you get interested in Porsches?

Mitch: Well I was stationed in Siegelbach, West Germany in about 1962 and a good friend had a 1962 or ‘63 356 1600 Super Cab. Together we would hit all the Grand Prix tracks and I guess that just hooked me.

BK: And what was your first then?

Mitch: Well before I bought my first Porsche - in 1963 I bought a VW 1200 Beetle, and drove it for about six months. I sold it and saved up so I could buy a 356.

BK: How did that work out?

Mitch: Good. I saved enough money and put down $200 on a 1964 Signal Red 356C coupe. As I recall I think they stickered at about $3,600, which was a huge sum for a 22-year-old Staff Sergeant, but heck, I was single. So in October 1963 I took the train to the factory in Stuttgart to take delivery of my new coupe. After a tour of the factory I was off on my journey.

BK: How long did you have it?

Mitch: Well I had it for about two years, driving it all over West Germany, then shipped it back to the states and sold it in 1965 I believe.

BK: I understand you tracked the car down in later years?

Mitch: I did. That car represented a special time, and to this day I’ve always admired the 356. It changed hands several times over the years and even spent time in San Antonio; currently it’s on Long Island.

BK: And what was next?

Mitch: Well, we had a pretty big gap between our first and second Porsche. It wasn’t until 2014 that we bought our second and that was a Carrera White on Black 2007 Boxster. We took that out on several Sunday Drives (now Tours), but after driving it several months something with the engine just wasn’t right. We had Al Zim check it out and decided before we put any money in it we would get rid of it.

Marie: This is where it gets interesting (laughing)

BK: And how’s that?

Mitch: One day I traded it in at Park Place for a Carrera White Metallic on Black 2015 Boxster.

Marie: He leaves in one and comes back in

another; it’s white and black looked nearly the same to me (laughing)!

BK: And?

Mitch: The 2015 was fun but just not fast enough for what I wanted as we took more drives . . . there was a “need for speed” happening. So one day I traded it for a 2014 Carrera S, Pure White on Black again.

Marie: I’ve gotten pretty used to a white and black Porsche in the garage!

BK: But this isn’t what you are driving today?

Mitch: No! I was on a drive and the guys knew I had a “need for speed” and kidded me that there was a Turbo S available in Austin. So last November I picked up the Pure White on Espresso Turbo S down in Austin.

Marie: Now this one I noticed (laughing). It has such a lovely interior color and matching top.

BK: And Marie, all the time you were really ok with all these cars coming and going?

Marie: Oh yes, Mitch has always been such a good provider, husband, and father; he deserves this and more.

And once again to think that after a few chance meetings I would uncover yet another great personal story of a guy, his girl of 50-plus years, and a handful of “white” cars. We will miss you Mitch and will always remember we are “driving friendships.”

Motorsport Mike: The Porsche 963

By the time you are reading this, another Rolex 24 at Daytona will be history, and we will either be elated with the outcome of Porsche’s performance, or anxiously awaiting the next race in Sebring. However, this year is vastly different, solely because Porsche has partnered with Team Penske in a new 963 LMDh (yes, numbered after the success of the 962 in the 80s/90s), competing in the GTP classification.

The unification between IMSA and the ACO (governing body of the 24 Hours of Le Mans) will allow the 963 to compete in both IMSA and WEC. One car, global racing . . . cost effectiveness at its best, right? Sure, if you have a disposable budget at ~$2.7MM per car and another ~$8.5MM to cover operating costs (per season!). The only payoff for investments at this level comes from finishing consistently at the top of the podium. Penske breeds winners and knows how to exceed better than

Managing Director Jonathan Diuguid noted, “You can tell when the drivers haven’t read it, because if we make the call and it doesn’t happen on our telemetry in the pits, we have to stop and

Several control systems can be altered via the steering wheel, which enables a completely new learning curve for the drivers and

Not limited to Porsche, some members hold on to dreams of remaining eclectic in their collection.

Moving on, several members will focus on driving. No surprise, the sound and thrill of our cars make for indelible memories. If you look back on 2022, think of the sound of the engine when you fire up your Porsche. Focus on how it feels when you hug the road through a curve. Never forget the joy of touring, HPDE, Autocross or basic driving to and from places of interest, necessity and routine. In their own words, these members aspire to driving friendships.

Final words

Spend time in the driver’s seat of your Porsche and close your eyes. Listen closely and you will hear Mick singing.

“If you start me up, If you start me up, I’ll never stop”

Then, do it.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

Founder’s Day was a little damp, but the weather had a unifying effect on those in attendance. A new common goal: to stay dry, and get some warm food. I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich from Newman Style BBQ. The rain gave some intrepid souls extra detail for their photographs.

One such soul is Maverick member, photographer and all around great guy, Paul Moseley. You’ll know Paul by the neat cameras he carries, his quick smile and great stories. We are really lucky to have him and the many other great contributors to Slipstream. You’ll see Michael Durovick’s work on the cover and his feature article on page 16 and 17 this month. Michael has conceived his R&B project with a desire to photograph the most rare and beautiful cars we have in the Maverick Region (and beyond). You might only see those cars here, so keep an eye out for what he has in store for us. Michael won’t disappoint.

I want to thank Michael, Paul and others you’ve seen on these pages like Alan Nusbaum, Scott Sheetz, Kendall Awtry and the many others who have submitted photos for use here. We are always looking for a new take on our events. So if you attend an event, have the photo bug or just some shots you’d like to share, please send them to me.

Paul’s unique take on our favorite subject

If you’re new to the club, or might not be aware, all of our positions are held volunteers. Each one of the articles, photos and events are submitted and run by our members. Some of those members have chosen to volunteer as board members and make all that we do possible. Serving as a board member is rewarding, but it’s not necessary to be a part of the action.

If you are interested in being a behind the scenes part of the club, contact Landon Stogner, our volunteer chair, for details. Our club does not run without our members, so if you have even the slightest desire to dig in a little deeper, we can accommodate. Until then, Enjoy the Drive.
