Board Botschaft: How Many Words is This Photo Worth?

Back in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Don Spaulding, a long-time PCA member, contacted me and asked if he could donate some PCA- and Porsche-related memorabilia to Maverick Region, since I am the Region Historian. For those of you who are not acquainted with Don, he held several positions in Maverick Region and PCA, including VP in 1971, President in 1972, and Zone 5 Representative from 1977 through 1984. Don’s 50th anniversary with PCA came and went in 2019, somehow without acknowledgment, and I hope to rectify that in 2024, which will mark 55 years with PCA for him.

Anyway, over the years, Don had amassed quite a collection of PCA documentation and newsletters, Porsche brochures and announcements, artwork, and keepsakes from several Porsche Parades and other PCA events, but it was taking up a lot of space in is house, and he felt that a better use for it would be to donate it to Maverick Region’s archives. I am currently in possession of this material, and I am looking for an effective way to share it with the general membership. If anyone has any ideas as to a good way to make it accessible to our members, besides scanning and digitizing it and posting it online, I’m open to ideas.

I was going through these archives recently and a Porsche brochure caught my eye. On the cover is a photo of a 911 driving up a narrow mountain pass, with a simple title: “Porsche. A love story.” It turned out that it was a full-line brochure from 1970, when Porsche was still a small sportscar manufacturer who had not yet won Le Mans overall (at least not at the time the brochure was printed). Inside the front cover is a stunning full-page color photo of four members of the Porsche family who were very much involved in the dayto-day operations of the company, both road cars and race cars.

In the foreground is Ferry Porsche, standing in front of one of the original twenty-five 917 prototypes built for homologation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Behind him and to the side of the 917 are Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, Ferry’s eldest son, and designer of the 904 Carrera GTS and of course the 911. Behind him is Hans-Peter Porsche, who held several positions at Porsche before leaving to join brother Butzi at Porsche Design, and who has been a frequent attendee of the Porsche Parade for decades. Last but not least, in the background, is Ferdinand Piëch, Ferry’s nephew and cousin to Butzi and Hans-Peter, famously the driving force behind Porsche’s racing successes in the mid-to-late 1960s and early 1970s.

This photo struck me as something rare, an artifact, something that we would be unlikely to see in contemporary Porsche advertising. This was from the days when the company was still Porsche KG (for Kommanditgesellschaft, or “limited partnership”), before Ferry determined in 1972 that the company had outgrown its roots as a family operation, changing the company’s status to Porsche AG (for Aktiengesellschaft, or “public limited company”) by removing family members from the Board of Directors.

So what does any of this have to do with Maverick Region? Mainly that change is inevitable and constantly accelerating, like it or not. It’s a reminder to enjoy the good things (not the least of which are our Porsches) and good times with our friends and loved ones (not the least of which are our Porsche friends and family) while we can, because in the prophetic words of Joni Mitchell, “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone!”

So take a drive in your Porsche at your next opportunity. Even better, enjoy that drive with some friends from Maverick Region, whether it’s a tour, a track event, or a get-together at a local coffee shop. That’s what PCA is for!

Lisa Ward joined our club in 2015 – well, let me rephrase that – her dad Greg Ward joined. What makes this special is that we have many husband-and-wife members, but rarely do we have a father-and daughter combo. If you know one, you know the other, and that’s very special. As most of you know, Women Behind the Wheel started up about two and half years ago, and Lisa is one of the “founding” women of this group. Since then Lisa has been involved with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the annual Christmas Cookie Exchange, and Porsches & Pastries, just to name a few.

So join me in CONGRATULATING Lisa as our September Mav of the Month.

Pat Gouldy joined our club in July of 2021. Since joining just over two years ago, I’m not sure there is an event that she and her husband David have not tried at least once. Like Lisa Ward when Women Behind the Wheel started up about two and half years ago, she was all in as one of the “founding” women of this group. Since then, Pat has been involved with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Women’s DE, and Hope House, just to name a few.

Maverick Women Behind the Wheel: Summer Fun

Plenty of summer travel and a calendar full of club events led the Maverick Women Behind the Wheel ladies to plan two main events for summer 2023: our 2nd annual ladies’ track day and our 3rd Porsches and Pastries breakfast meet. Frankly, I’m amazed at the efforts required to put on some of our events, including what should be the easiest – finding days that work.

Alycia Johnson, New Vehicle Sales Manager and event sponsor from Park Place Porsche, also came up to support and observe. Each had a few moments to introduce themselves and tell the group a bit about what they do.

Ladies’ Only HPDE

The HPDE at Eagles Canyon Raceway (ECR) on July 29 was chiefly coordinated by Wendy Shoffit with Paula Galanti, co-owner of ECR. Wendy started the ball rolling by contacting Craig Janssen to provide the coaches and skilled classroom instruction to the 21 women who participated, including two women from Houston. Wendy set up and registered the students and coaches plus coordinated food, trophies, raffle prizes, specialty car numbers, and goodie bags.

Lisa Ward and Pat Gouldy secured two sponsors to help cut costs, but their work didn’t stop there. Pat dove into organizing and promoting the day. She ordered and received the t-shirts, contributed and asked for door prizes, and brought treats and prosecco to the event. Lisa greeted participants upon arrival and took skid pad videos with participants’ phones. She enjoyed supporting and cheering on the drivers, noting how much fun she had watching the supportive significant others who attended. They reminded her of parents pointing out their kids on the soccer field.

Unable to attend this year’s event due to demanding clients and some jet lag, I still had fun helping Wendy design the t-shirt, set up a plan with our shirt supplier, and be trusted to share it all with you.

This first-class event began at 7:45 a.m. that Saturday morning with registration, breakfast pastries, and goodie bags designed to help combat the hot weather. They included a commemorative t-shirt, custom-printed car numbers that included our logo and their names, sunscreen, lip balm, a cooling yoga towel, and a MWBTW

After an 8:30 a.m. driver meeting, the day featured four 25-minute track sessions, a new skid pad experience, a few informative classroom sessions led by Irene Yuan with help from Craig Janssen, lunch in the Platinum Lounge, and closing ceremonies at 3:00 p.m.. Temperatures that Saturday reached an insane 106° F, which is extra hot with helmets on, windows open, and no air conditioning.

Like last year, the ladies celebrated their achievements with mimosas, a $50 coupon for another Maverick Region HPDE, and an awards ceremony. Robyn Howard in her black 2002 Boxster won the Ballerina Award for her outstanding spins on the skid pad. Elizabeth Womack in her silver 2006 Cayman S walked away with the Most Improved on the Skid Pad Award on her very first track day. Victoria Marques, driving her gray 2015 Cayman S was recognized for Most Improved on the Track. Also on the track for her first time in her Guards Red 2013 Boxster, Donna Cornell won the AllAround Award for Performance and Enthusiasm.

After having two successful ladies-only track days, the MWBTW hopes to continue them perhaps twice per year. Intended to be a stress-free introduction to high performance driving, participants walk away with solid education, considerable confidence, and new friendships. We thank our sponsors Park Place Porsche, USI Insurance Services, and Eagles Canyon Raceway. Thank you also to the coaches, instructors, and supportive gentlemen who came out to bond and assist in the boyfriend cheering section.

Looking to try new locations throughout the Metroplex, our 3rd Porsches and Pastries was held on Sunday, August 13, at Village Baking Company on Knox Street in Dallas. We began gathering just before 8:30 a.m., securing much of their indoor seating to avoid continued crazy hot August temperatures.

Equipe Rapide Autocross Series: Cup 6

Event 6, July 16 at Lone Star Park had some exciting weather! It started out looking like another triple digit day, but gave the first heat increasing rain, a lightning strike 30 minute delay followed by a drying course so conditions were constantly changing for them. Heat two was the ever drying heat which helped Joe Wilkinson put in some blazing times to with Class SS in his 2018 GT3 over a well set up Corvette C8. Most of the Porsches ended up in heat 3 when the skies opened for the first runs followed by ever drying conditions for the final runs. Some were able to take advantage of conditions to put up some good battles for class wins. Sigrid Schnoerr put another win on Class PH, also winning first overall Women’s Performance

In Class P2, Aaron Hutton and Thomas Briggs (yes, the 17 year old who won the Cayman Class at the 2023 Palm Springs Parade Autocross) both driving Cayman S’s, Carey Spreen in his Boxster S and Doug Edne in his 996. Doug had a failing alternator slow his efforts while the others swapped the lead. Aaron ended up the winner when Thomas caught a cone on his best run. We look forward to seeing these guys continue this battle the rest of the year.

Track Day: Learning My Limits on the Track

About seven years ago I found a passion for engaging women in the historically male-dominated gun industry, and brought the sport to women in a less intimidating manner than being in classes mostly populated by men. So, when I found the “Maverick Women Behind the Wheel” group within the Maverick Region, I was sold, because I understand the importance of being able to engage with and teach women differently than men. From the moment I heard the words “women-only driving event,” I said, “Sign me up!”

Boy-howdy! That was fun! The instructors with me in the car for my two skid pad sessions made it an amazing experience. Throttle, turn, more throttle . . . it was hard and confusing work at times. Once I finally got the hang of it at the end of my second try; my instructor was laughing so hard and having such a good time that his laughter and enthusiasm became infectious. I found myself so excited and laughed right along with him. I felt even more encouraged by the cheers from the bystanders watching from the tent.

I’d been looking forward to this event from the day I picked up my 2013 Guards Red Boxster in late April. I signed up for email and text alerts so I would be notified as soon as possible when registration opened. I was determined to participate in this event despite my nervousness and how intimidating taking my car on the track felt. Finally, I got the notification and completed my registration. Then, I waited.

Finally, the day – the hot, humid, late-July-in-Texasday – arrived.

My husband, Mike, accompanied me but drove the truck . . . you know, just in case something went wrong, and he needed to locate a trailer to carry the Boxster home. He came to watch, support, and cheer - not to hover, critique, or take charge.

We arrived early, and I was met by the always happy and friendly Lisa Ward, who helped me find a parking spot and directed me to check-in. I loved that there was no assumption that I would just know. And, it was so reassuring to be greeted by another woman, someone who looked more like me than some of the others decked out in head-to-toe gear with motorcycles or dedicated track cars. We all checked in, received some AH-MAZE-ING swag bags (girls love swag, by the way), and had our introductory meeting to pair with our coaches before hitting the track.

The next thing I knew, I was heading out to my first track session. My coach, Ed, was kind, patient, and encouraging. It felt pretty good, but I knew I had trouble remembering what was coming next with some of the turns. After that session, my group went immediately to the skid pad for a lesson in drifting.

After participating in a classroom session, I understood a few things better and began to visualize the order of the turns and analyze how to approach them. Each track session, I felt myself becoming more confident. Being in the classroom with only female students removed any hesitancy to speak up and ask questions. Being on the track with only women driving allowed me the opportunity to push myself without feeling the pressure that I might have felt if there were men also driving at the same time. All of these elements added together created a perfect introduction to the track driving experience.

The day was both busy and exhausting: track session, skid pad session, track session, classroom session, lunch, track session, classroom session, track session. The day concluded with a final classroom session with awards and the offer of an optional bonus track session. My confidence increased exponentially throughout the day, which showed in my lap times decreasing all day (thanks again to my husband for timing me!)

I watched myself go from very unsure, nervous, and intimidated by the track to confident and empowered to drive my car the way it can be driven. Now I know her capability and my limits a little better. While on a solo road trip a few weeks later, I put my knowledge to the test confidently driving winding roads through the Arkansas Ozarks. My experience also gave me insight to better help the women to whom I teach gun safety and shooting since I made the same journey that day that many of my students take when they pick up a gun for the first time.

So, thank you Maverick Region and Maverick Women Behind the Wheel for hosting this women’s only event. By doing so, you gave some of us space to try something we’ve never tried before in a less intimidating and fun atmosphere with the support and encouragement of other women. That kind of experience makes a world of difference to women being ready and willing to go back out and do it again. I know I plan to do it again as soon as possible!

Can an 11- to 12-year-old car be considered a classic? Well, yes, in the case of 997.2 - it’s a modern classic! These 997 mid-cycle-refreshed Porsches were produced from ’09-’12. With the most senior members of this generation at 14 years old, it’s too early to speculate how Porschephiles will judge it in the future. However, market data looks promising so far. Here is why you should pay attention.

Price: 997.2 reached the bottom of its depreciation curve several years ago. Over the last three years, pricing increased slightly. Very encouraging news for this young generation.

Performance: A modern Porsche must have its share of the technological alphabet soup: PASM, PSM, PTV, PTM, PDK, PCCB, VTG, and PSE. The 997.2 has them covered. With

This first ran in July of 2017. When I was looking for the month’s interviewee, I decided it was time that I talked to a woman with a passion for Porsche; I have talked to guys, couples, but not interviewed a woman to date. Let me start by saying up front, until this interview we had never met, much less said hello. However, reading Slipstream since 1996, I guess you could say I met her in print, having read her articles over the years.

I’ll give you the opportunity to as well, since over 1,500 of you are new members since then. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” . . .

Bill Kruder: Well let’s start with where you are from; I presume not Dallas? Linda Bambina: What? You can tell I’m not from here (laughing)? Actually I’m from Midland. My dad was in the oil business and in the ‘60s there were three things there: cattle, cotton, and oil. After college I ended up out near Palm Springs for a couple years then ended up moving to Dallas.

BK: And where did you go to college?

LB: I didn’t stray too far. I went to Texas Tech, which is only about two hours north of Midland.

BK: What did you major in?

LB: I was a secondary education major.

BK: And what did you teach?

LB: I taught Special Education for ten years, then moved into the gifted program, taught Texas history for some fourteen years, then became a noisy librarian and eventually retired after 39 years.

BK: So tell me how you and your husband Alan met?

LB: Alan had moved here from outside Buffalo, NY, and we were both teachers at R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton. I was teaching Special Education and we both were assigned the same lunch period. After about a year or so of lunches we started dating.

BK: Let’s talk cars now. What were you driving then? And what was Alan driving?

LB: Talk about polar extremes in cars! I was driving a Ford Pinto –yes – a Pinto; Alan was driving a ‘75 911 S in Grand Prix White. He loves white Porsches.

BK: And what was your first car?

LB: Hard to believe, but it was 1927 Model T, and no I’m not that old. I got my license at 15 and drove it all over Midland, and later, Lubbock.

BK: So when did you first drive a Porsche?

LB: It was Alan’s 75 911 S. We went over to this big parking lot in North Dallas and he bravely taught me to drive it.

BK: So tell me about when you became active in the club?

BK: That’s a long time before you ever had a first date.

LB: Well let’s just say life is complicated; when we did have our first date I was in charge of a Sock Hop and managed to rope Alan into helping me, no surprise there (laughing). Well after the Sock Hop, Alan asked me to stop for a drink. We went to a brand-new place called The Wild Turkey, then to Don Carter Bowling Lanes to meet up with his roommate, followed by a stop at his house before I said “I need to go home” at 4 am!

BK: Wow that’s some first date! And how long after did you guys get married?

LB: It was like three weeks later: we were engaged, and got married

LB: Well Alan had belonged to the Niagara Region before moving here in 1978 and I joined in 1981. We had met Joan and Barry Gibbs, who owned IXXI Enterprises at the time. Joan was president in ’83 and she needed someone to be the Advertising Chair. I said “yes,” and that led to many positions over the next 14 years. (Interesting side note - we have had only two woman presidents: Joan was the first in 1983, and Fran Ussery in 1984.)

BK: So was Alan also active in the club?

LB: He was in activities, but I was the one who was involved with the board and kind of pulled Alan in. It wasn’t until 1986 that Alan became President, and he did that for two terms, staying on through the DFW Parade in 1987, which was such a busy time.

BK: And what other positions have you held?

LB: Let’s see I was Ad Chair, Secretary, and Co-Vice President with Alan back when we had full blown monthly dinner meetings with programs.

BK: I know you have done a lot more than just hold positions. Tell me about Autocross and Mineral Wells?

LB: Well we had Autocrosses in parking lots but light poles became an issue (smiling). One of our members discovered there was an old airfield in Mineral Wells that we could use. Let me tell you, it was more “field” than “airfield.” So a group of us with our yard tools in hand started clearing out a “course;” we originally cleared only what we would be driving on.

BK: I’m told you have been active at the national level too with Parade?

LB: In the first Parade that I had an active role, I was the Registrar, which was in 1987 right here in Dallas. It was held at the DFW Airport hotel (called the Amfac then). We garaged our cars there and used Bear Creek Golf Course for the car show and Concours. But what was interesting about this Parade was that, up until then, all scoring was done by hand and on paper. With the urging of Charlie Davis, we used computers for the first time. We had our hiccups, but it changed forever how things would be done, and the Mavericks are to thank for that. In 1997 I was part of the planning committee for the San Antonio Parade. That was an interesting one too, as the Longhorn Region was down to nothing, and Corpus Christi (Coastal Bend Region) and Mavericks were asked to step in. We would drive down once a month for meetings then head right back to get to work. To make this one more interesting we added my silly but fun “Costume Concours” in which you dressed up your car and yourself on a personal theme. My third Parade was in 2004 in Fort Worth. My good friend Jan Mayo was the Parade Chair and I was the Entertainment Chair, which is a position they invented for just me.

BK: That was actually my first Parade to attend. How did that one go?

LB: Well being in Cow Town we of course went with that theme. Every Parade has a Volunteer Party. Peter Porsche was attending, and I managed to talk him into helping us. Several of us dressed up as famous Country Personalities; Peter was dressed as Roy Rogers and I was Dale Evans, and we sang “Happy Trails to You” to about 500 volunteers at that party.

BK: So how many Parades have you attended?

LB: Think I have been to about 28.

BK: Now I have to ask about this infamous vest.

LB: Well that came about after attending the 1993 Parade in Cincinnati. They had this table-decorating contest, and our table thought we should step up the game and each make fancy Porsche Crest T-shirts to wear. Well some time later, I decided to get more use out of the crest I had made: I bought a pair of Kmart black jeans and cut a vest out of them and sewed the crest from the T-shirt on the back.

BK: Let’s fast forward to 2012 and the Mav’s 50th Anniversary. I understand you had your input there. LB: I did, I did. I decided we should have a “Family Portrait” of sorts. I wanted to get 50 Porsches, one of each year car represented since Maverick had existed, but not just anyone’s. They HAD to have been active on the board. Somehow, with lots of help, I managed to track them all down in about seven months.

BK: And there was one other thing that we are still using today.

LB: YES, I’m thrilled to hear about the tag line Maverick is using today. Mavs had been using one about “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people” since ‘86 when Alan used it in his President’s Slipstream column, and in talking with Fran Ussery, she came up with . . . Driving Friendships

Prostate Cancer Awareness: A story from one of our Mavs

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer diagnosed in men, and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, after lung cancer. In the United States, about one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point during their lifetimes. The disease is often caught before it spreads because of effective screening options; however, prostate cancer often has no early symptoms.

and performed a fusion biopsy, combining the MRI images with ultrasound images in real time to pinpoint suspicious areas and collect biopsy samples. The pathology report confirmed what the PSA test results indicated -- I had developed early-stage prostate cancer.

Dr. Roehrborn recommended surgery as the best treatment option, primarily due to my relatively young age. To achieve an average life expectancy, we needed to find a path to beat prostate cancer for almost thirty years. Removing the prostate gland surgically would hopefully eliminate most of the cancer from my body and leave additional treatment options like radiation and hormone therapy down the road if I needed them.

However, prostate cancer treatments often come with potential quality of life issues including degrees of incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and bowel problems – not something an otherwise healthy 50-year-old wants to hear. I decided that I wanted more of a PSA trend line than a single data point before selecting surgery, so I chose “active surveillance” as my preferred option.

My loving wife took this photo about thirty minutes before I underwent a robotically-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy at UT Southwestern’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital in Dallas in early August.

While prostate cancer is more common in older men or those with other risk factors like smoking, being overweight, or not getting enough exercise, you can see from the picture that I am neither old nor out of shape, and I never smoked. Roughly one in three men with a family history will develop the disease. This was likely my case; my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in his late sixties. I’m positive that my dad never meant to give me prostate cancer, but it’s possible that I inherited the genetics for this disease from him. Of all the major cancers, prostate cancer is among the most heritable: the inherited risk of prostate cancer has been estimated to be as high as 60%.

It’s also estimated that black men are 50% more likely to develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, and twice as likely to die from the disease than other men, including other men of color. Choices about screening and treatment for early-stage prostate cancer are sometimes complicated and very personal, but like many diseases, progress is being made in both detection and treatment with excellent outcomes if considered proactively.

My first prostate specific antigen (PSA) test result was 5.5 ng/ml. I was aware that anything over 4.0 ng/ml was concerning, especially considering that I was only fifty years old at the time. I was also aware that a PSA test result alone was not a diagnosis of prostate cancer since other conditions can cause elevated PSA levels.

I researched my options for a respected urologist and a high-quality hospital system and contacted Dr. Claus Roehrborn, Professor and Chair of the Urology Department at UT Southwestern in Dallas. After our first office visit, Dr. Roehrborn ordered a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of my prostate gland

Active surveillance involves tracking your PSA test results over time with additional prostate biopsies along the way to determine if the grade or volume of cancer has increased or shown a greater potential to spread. After tracking for a few years, my PSA was slowly increasing and returned a 9.1 ng/ml result earlier this year. This summer, an MRI-guided biopsy revealed that my cancer had advanced to the next grade, increasing the potential to spread beyond the prostate gland. I scheduled my surgery shortly after.

My story began with my first PSA test. A simple blood test alerted me to a health concern I didn’t know I had.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that “men who are 55 to 69 years old should make individual decisions about being screened for prostate cancer with a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test.” In my experience, 55 years old is not early enough, especially if you have risk factors

like I did (family history). My primary care physician back in Massachusetts thought that starting PSA screening at 50 years of age was proactive, yet my initial PSA test result surprised us both.

If you are a male in your 40s who has not yet had a PSA test, please consider your specific risk factors (if any) and have a conversation with your primary care physician about whether a PSA test is appropriate for you.

Rennsport Reunions “bookend” my journey with prostate cancer. I was so excited to attend the Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI back in September 2018, blissfully unaware that a small but cancerous lesion was quietly growing in my prostate gland. Just a few months later, my life changed when I had my first PSA test. I joined millions of other men who had to deal with a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

My recovery has thankfully been even better than I expected. My PSA level four weeks after surgery was undetectable. While I will need to continue to test my PSA levels biannually for many years to come, my surgery in August hopefully brings this current chapter of prostate cancer to a close.

Let’s consider Rennsport 7 as the other “bookend” on my five-year journey with prostate cancer!

Flat Pat: Getting out while staying home

Who else thinks Pat Carmichael had the best travels this year? I’m not referring to the Sunday coffee pop-up Mr. Carmichael in the flesh; I’m writing about the laminated Flat Pat who racked up some miles traveling with fellow Mavs.

If you’re not connected via the club’s social media, you may not know about this craze. Since I’m passionate about travel writing, I’ll catch you up. But first, I wanted to know more about what inspired Louie Devega to create all the fun we’ve been having.

Anyone remember Flat Stanley?

According to my quick online search, author Jeff Brown published an American children’s book series as bedtime stories beginning in

as they documented where Flat Stanley accompanied them around the world. Dale Hubert began the Flat Stanley Project to increase reading and writing skills and to teach children about people and cultures from different places.

When I asked Louie how our beloved Flat Pat came about, he called Pat the original Pop-Up King. He reminisced about Landon Stogner and Peter Wen often catching a relaxed Pat sitting one leg crossed over the other in his outdoor chair with his phone to his ear. These photos began showing up on social media with the word “spotted.” At the 2022 PCA Palooza in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Louie asked Popup Pat to pose for him. That photograph was then printed, laminated, and Pat-approved. Next, some amazing travel ensued.

They braved cold and wet weather touring Versailles before driving to the very walkable city of Lyon for a couple days. They ditched the car there and hopped a high-speed train for Turin, Italy. With less than a day to enjoy Turin, they opted for a bus tour and a couple of fantastic meals before taking another train to the Cinque Terre.

Staying in Vernazza, they climbed a trail for the picturesque views of the sea and colorful town below. Using efficient trains, they visited Manarola, Riomaggiore, Monterosso, La Spezia, and Levanto. From these stunning, sunny coastal destinations, they headed towards Lake Como via train through Milan. They cleverly planned their travel to squeeze in a timed entry at the famous Last Supper. After seeing Bellagio, Menaggio, and Verano, they finished their grand tour in Milan.

May 15. They saw Glasgow, Inverness, Edinburgh, and Oban. Flat Pat enjoyed a boat ride with Jennifer around Kerrera Island.

Carl Motter, his wife, Theresa, and sons Alex and Nick visited Portugal and Spain in mid-May. Flat Pat tagged along to enjoy some beach time and take in some sights.

In June, Wendy and James Shoffit took Flat Pat to Porsche Parade in Palm Springs, California, in their Taycan. We almost lost him there when a transformer tried to take him out.

Also in June, Flat Pat accompanied Tom and Beckie Gomer to Ireland for Beckie’s 10-day birthday adventure,

which began in the American Airlines First Class Lounge. They enjoyed breathtaking views and visited cathedrals, castles, distilleries, breweries, and pubs in Dublin, Waterford, Kilkenny, Blarney, Limerick, the Ring of Kerry, and Connemara.

Flat Pat flew to Spain next to experience the Camino de Santiago. It is historically a Catholic pilgrimage to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela that claims to hold the remains of St. James the Apostle. One can bike or walk one of nine common routes

for religious reasons, reflection, or for sport. To receive a certificate, one must prove to have walked the final 100 kilometers or biked the final 200 kilometers with a multistamped credential.

Flat Pat accompanied Pat Talty on the Portuguese Camino in June. They walked 128 kilometers, slept in a wide variety of accommodations, and met fellow pilgrims from all over Europe. Only one of them suffered from blisters.

My 117-kilometer walk on the French Camino in mid-July took Flat Pat and I through eucalyptus forests, around farmland, over medieval bridges, into stunning cathedrals, and up and down several hills. Only one of us could be found out of breath at times.

Between their two Caminos, the Taltys introduced Flat Pat to six lovely days in the Spanish and French Basque region where they enjoyed local seafood, delicious tapas, and two opportunities to cheer on the cyclists in the Tour de France.

The Gomers opted to travel with PopUp Pat in a whole new form in July when they met Rob and Kim Turner in Washington. Flat Pat was elevated to Flat Flag Pat at a three-day festival at The Gorge.

Pat and David Gouldy took Flat Pat on a road trip in August. They visited a handful of National Parks as they cruised through Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Flat Pat was seen eyeing some delicious Memphis BBQ and wanting to conquer the Appalachian Trail. The trio zipped down to Pensacola Beach before heading back to Texas.

Pat Carmichael thinks all this attention is fun, but this isn’t new to him. Officially retired from an architecture firm for about a year (but still consulting,)

Pat recalled the laughs they’d have when photos of him would randomly pop up on artboards used for client presentations. He was also known for gathering colleagues together for coffee outside of work hours, much like he organizes the coffee pop-ups for the Mavs. Even Pat’s kids have joined the Flat Pat craze, sharing pictures of him in compromising or creative positions such as sitting dangerously close to the BBQ grill.

Spotted: Burgers and the Bandit

The things you see in Texas when you aren’t looking.

Tuesday at 11:30 I rolled into the local In & Out burger in Rockwall to meet my wife for lunch near her office. While looking for a shaded spot I saw a 992 parked nose out with wires for radar detectors and cameras running across the dash. Not super-unusual but certainly interesting. After we walked in and ordered, we noticed two gentleman wearing In & Out California shirts packaging a lot of burgers and sauce, ready to travel. One was in a cowboy hat with the other in a Porsche baseball hat. Being the intellectual stand-out I am, I quickly put together 2 + 2 and deduced that they were with the 992, something was up.

I introduced myself and inquired as to what the story was with all the burgers and the dry ice. I met Gerald and Christopher Clayton, father and son, from Huntsville, AL. They were pulling a classic “Smokey and the Bandit” run to Texas, by way of Texarkana, to get to the closest In & Out to them and bring back 20 double-doubles and extra spread. You see Gerald used

to live in California before relocating to Huntsville and was a big fan of the west coast based burger chain. I regrettably didn’t ask if the decision was made after a night of drinking, but either way, this was a great story. I offered to help load up the frunk and talk about the cars for a few minutes. Gerald acquired his beautiful Agate Gray over black 992 C4S earlier this year and just loves the car. As is the case with many of us, the 911 is his daily driver and “remarkably practical” dream car. Equipped with PDK, sport chrono, and PSE with extended leather interior it is perfect for 9-hour highway burger runs that start the night before. Gerald and Chris were packed and headed back out on 30 towards Texarkana when I encouraged them to visit the giant gas station with the beaver on the sign. They will thank me later. Gerald and Chris will be joining the PCA chapter in Huntsville, AL when they return home tomorrow. We really do meet some wonderful people and pick-up some great stories with these cars.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

This morning I took a short drive in my trusty ‘87 911 and didn’t sweat. It was remarkable. It’s been a long time since I could enjoy the howl of the motor in cool weather. It sounds better that way you know. I wish it could have been longer, but if I were still out driving, we wouldn’t get to talk.

If you’re a regular reader you know that I like to badmouth electric cars, and occasionally Ferraris. And yes, it’s been pointed out that many of you have one or both. If that is the case then rejoice, this article is for you. Although maybe not. I haven’t eschewed the internal combustion engine in order to enjoy all of the benefits of battery power that I’ve heard so much about. But I’m not opposed to them either. In fact, I’ve had electric vehicles since I was my son’s age. Although back then there was less worry about range anxiety. We had a whole stack of batteries to swap in and keep going. I know, I know, it’s not funny. You’ve heard it before. Well, whatever your reason for driving an electric car, I applaud you. I appreciate the R&D that you are providing and the economies of scale you are creating...and the fun you are having

while doing it. Seriously, I know they are stupid fast and I know they are a hoot to drive. I even think they make sense around town. There are many benefits and I can see the possibility of owning one, on purpose, becoming more and more real. I think they have a ways to go yet, but if we gave up when the gasoline engine was less reliable than horses, we’d all be part of the carriage owners club. No thanks. So, you win. I was wrong. You can whir around knowing that you are smarter than me. No real achievement there.
