Hill Country Tour April 6th - 8th

Once again, it is time to plan ahead and join the MR PCA Tourmiester for a frolicking weekend on the great back roads of the Texas Hill Country. Prep yourself and your Porsche for some runs, rest, roadwork, and relaxation. Last year's Hill Country Tour was well attended and well received by the participants. This year's tour is expected to be even more popular, so get your reservations in early. We hope to see all of the usual 50 - 60 or so suspects and some new faces as well. Once again, space will be limited so register as early as you can! DETAILS: We will begin from the Metroplex on Friday at 8:00 a.m. and head to the Hodges’ family’s weekend home in Comfort, Texas. Along the way, we will be entertained by bluebonnets, mexican food, and the hill country hospitality. This tour will (as usual for this tourmiester) have some surprises, along with time to unwind and commiserate. We will have a little Texas history along with this tour, and we might even have a quiz! The cost of the 2001 April Hill Country Tour will be $30.00. $5.00 of the registration fee will go to the Hope Shelter battered women's and children's center, Maverick Region's charity benefactor organization.

Prez Says: by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President It seems like most of my articles are about the driving events, but until someone steps up to the plate and organizes a Concours program, the driving events and socials will dominate. We have had some really good events already this year, with many more coming up quickly. Of course our Happy Hours are one of my personal favorites now, and I try to go to every one. It is a great way to hang out, meet new people, and unwind with a (rather large) friendly crowd! A new program we are starting is an official Corner Worker pool for our Drivers Education events as well as Club Races. Corner Workers are vital to any road course driving event and the events simply cannot happen without them. Autocrosses and Time Trials use the drivers as workers, but there is not as much training involved for most non-track corner work. A small example of this is that a typical Autocross corner only has one flag, where a fully-staffed road course corner could have up to 10! Corner workers are the lifeblood of the event – they are the sole means of communication to the drivers on the course. They alert the driver of any dangerous situations through the flags they wave and how they wave them. So the work is important work. But the best thing (to me) about working a corner is the sense of involvement you get. You can see the cars and learn things about how to drive better, but you also get to be a very important part of the action. You get to hear exactly what is going on out there and assist with the control of the event.

In the past we have been able to rely on SCCA for paid professional corner workers to staff our club races and Drivers Education events. But as more and more clubs are putting on races, their schedules get tighter and tighter. So we really need a group of volunteers and good ideas on how to get volunteers. Joe McGlohen is spearheading this effort for Maverick Region. Read his article about it later in this issue, and if you have any ideas on how to make this program successful, or want to volunteer to work a corner yourself, please contact him. There is a similar effort being led by Jim Coshow at a PCA National level. If you are interested in competitive or track driving, there are several events coming up soon. If you missed the Autocross schools, don’t worry, we have a Developing Driver class that will get you up to speed in no time. Make sure the registrar (wendy@shoffit.com) knows you want to be in DD. We have two time trials and a Mineral Wells autocross (plenty of room) all coming up in April. There are also going to be two Drivers Ed events coming up fast. Cimarron Region is hosting the Mayfast Driver’s Education at Hallett on May 5th and 6th, and Hill Country Region is hosting a Driver’s Education at Motorsport Ranch on May 19th and 20th. For those of you that like an ever-changing array of twists, turns, hills, and valleys, there is the Hill Country Tour April 6th to 8th that has been quite popular in years past. Or, if you prefer, you can do the Dogwood Spring Fling hosted by Cimmaron Region, which unfortunately falls on the same dates! Either way, come on out and join the fun!

Pam’s Page by Pam Abdalla, Slipstream Editor I have a bit of writer’s block this month. In fact, Slipstream is completely done except this one little article, which has been started, then erased, then started and erased again. I would love to write about the fabulous time I had at the Ladies’ Autocross, but due to unforeseen circumstances surrounding my availability of an automobile, I was not able to participate. I did have a rather nice chat with little Jasmine Shoffit on the sidelines, though. I now know more than I ever wanted to about that strange blue

cartoon character, “The Tick”. One thing that I did do this past month was attend the ALMS at TMS. The greatest part for me, though, was getting there. George and I borrowed a Porsche 550 Spider replica from a friend and drove it there. Despite the 50-degree temperature at 8:30 in the morning and the folks on I635 staring at us like we were idiots, we had a blast. Once parked at The Porsche Store’s corral outside the speedway, the car was like a spectator-magnet. Despite all the beautiful, expensive and exotic Porsches parked around it, this $12,000 knock-off got most of the attention. I just wish we could have said it was ours!

Maverick Minutes by Andy Mears, Maverick Region Secretary The March Maverick Region Board meeting was held at the always-festive home of James and Wendy Shoffit in Valley Ranch and was preceded with a pizza dinner. The meeting opened at 7:01 with updates from each of the committee chairs. Discussion opened with a proposal for the club to purchase flag sets for corner worker stations for use during club races. The discussion concluded with a request for more research on the cost of making versus buying the flags. Also discussed was a potential for MR to purchase a set of scales for club racing. Autocross (AX) #1 was a great success with 83 participants. The Drivers Education (DE) event was also a great success with 87 participants. The Goodie Store also had good sales at the February Swap meet despite the cold weather. The Ladies AX school on March 10 was fully subscribed.

The meeting closed at 8:48. The next board meeting will be on April 4, at James and Wendy Shoffit's in Irving. Swap Meet At GTI by Vaughan Garrett "Porsche Parts, Porsche People" What do you get when you mix people and parts together? A Swap Meet! About 100 swappers showed up at Dan Butt's GTI in Euless for the Maverick Region's first Porsche swap meet of the year. Despite a sharp wind, sunny skies prevailed bringing Porsche fans out of winter hibernation. The swap meet is always a friendly event and a time to meet new comers and old timers. You can see the wheels turning in people's minds as to how they're going to fix-up their cars for the coming season. Even The Goodie Store had a nice set-up and made many sales. Thanks to Dan Butts, Tinker Moncus, Lanean Hughes, and to all who helped make this year's swap meet a successful event.

One Lap of D/FW Charity Drive June 2, 2001 Sponsored by the Maverick Region PCA What?:

A day long tour around the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex.

Why?:

To benefit Familiar Footsteps (a home for mentally disabled adults) and Hope Shelter (a center for physically and mentally abused women and children).

When?:

Saturday, June 2, 2001; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Where?:

Start - Downtown Fort Worth; Lunch - Texas Motor Speedway; Finish -The Ballpark in Arlington.

Who?:

All Metroplex Specialty Car Clubs.

This year we have a great opportunity to help two of the lesser known local charity organizations through participation in the "Charity One Lap of D/FW." The two charities listed as benefactors of this event do not receive as much notoriety or help as other household name groups. However, they are doing a great service for our community and deserve recognition and help. The Charity One Lap of D/FW will bring together most of the specialty car clubs of North Texas to show, parade, visit with other people who have a passion about their vehicle marque, and to generally have fun. The format of the event is as follows. We will all rendezvous at the appointed time and location, caravan to each successive location along the published route to parade for the waving crowds, and end in the center of the Metroplex where each car club can conduct their own concours, show and shine, or other awards contest if they wish. This will also give the general public a central location to come by and get close to some of the most beautiful, exciting and interesting cars in the area, and talk with the owners. Included in the route plan is lunch and other activities at the Texas Motor Speedway. This event will be covered by the media to help promote the cause and awareness. Each car club is asked to help promote the event with private and corporate sponsors for tax deductible donations to the event. All proceeds will benefit the charities. Awards will be given to the car clubs for largest total donations, and for greatest donations per number of participants, so let's get out the MR PCA people! Entry fees are $25.00 per car, and pre-registration is an absolute must. We are expecting a large turnout for this event, so make sure to be a part of a fun event. Plan your June 2nd Saturday now to join us for food, fun and merriment for a great cause. ALMS at Texas Motor Speedway by Lanean Hughes The American Le Mans Series race at Texas Motor Speedway March 4th and 5th was exciting not only for the Porsche teams participating (who took 3 out of the top 4 positions), but also for the Porsche Club. The turnout of club members - and their cars - was just terrific and what made it even better was to have a Porsche corral right up at the entrance gate. The corral was sponsored by The Porsche Store, and we certainly want to thank them for their support. Saturday was somewhat “wet” needless to say, so the tent was a blessing for the 30+ people who attended. Not only did we get to do an incredible parade lap, around the oval and the road course, we also had Randy Pobst one of the Porsche GT3 drivers come to our tent for an autograph session. He spent time visiting with us and letting us know that they appreciated the local Porsche club support. Sunday was a different story. We had 63 Porsches in our corral and loads of Porsche family from Oklahoma, Houston, Austin, Wichita and DFW. Quite a showing of all “flavors of Porsche!”

I want to personally thank The Porsche Store for the loan of a beautiful Racer Yellow Boxster that I drove for the weekend. I hated to return it, but made sure the front license plate was intact when it was returned. Thanks to Wendy and Jasmine on Saturday for their help and to Jan for helping me “police” the area and welcome our guests on Sunday. All in all it was a wonderful event. The racing was great, a nd it gave many of us an opportunity to see the Road Course where the Maverick Region will be hosting the October Club Race and DE. Thanks Mavericks and our extended family for supporting our events. It makes the effort worthwhile. (See page 20 for more on the ALMS race results).

Autocross #1 - Standridge Stadium by Charlie Davis The first autocross of the season is history and it was a great start. Graham, James, Wendy, Bill, and Kevin received well deserved compliments from those that attended. If I missed a major player in the above short list, please accept my apologies and (belated) compliments. This was the largest AX in recent memory and was essentially the same size as the big Autobahn SpeedWeekend at TMS last year...there were 83 entrants (66% PCA members)! We continue to modify the AX event, with good results. Although I personally didn't hear any negative comments, apparently some entrants questioned the wisdom of our "only the first 3 runs count" rule for parking lot autocrosses (even though the entrants got a total of six runs at this event). I believe that this change is fair and well thought out. I assume that most of those negative comments were due to resistance to change. With time, I'm sure that we will hear fewer gripes. In my opinion, this change was long overdue: We had lost the vision of what a true AX is, where an essential part of the game is quickly analyzing and adapting to the course. With 10-12 strike attempts, most people can get on base. One comment that I did hear was that the course was an obvious 914 course. When a 914 took TTOD, these sages were vindicated. But look at the top 10 times: 914, 911, 911, 914, 914, Corvette, 986, Celica, 914, Neon. Anyone familiar with Ed Mayo's driving and his car, "Cockroach" should not be too surprised that he was the "winner". Besides, "Cockroach" is not really a 914 anymore (a 914 on a starvation diet and a serious exercise regimen, perhaps). So it was a well balanced course design for any car, driven well. Plus, the course designer drove a 911 to 3rd fastest time. So, if you want to see a REAL 914 AX course, please ask a 914 driver to design it.

Note also that the total spread in this group was 3.6 seconds (and that 1.5 seconds of that was between Ed and the second driver, George Abdalla), so second place was up for grabs by the other 9 drivers.... I was pleased to see several ladies competing and doing well (there were 10 entered). Jennifer Courtney was the fastest lady and she is a relative newcomer to the sport. She was only 2.2 seconds behind her husband Joe (who has much more experience). So, in case you wondered why Jennifer was on the cover of the March Slipstream, it's because she is driving very well! An up-and-coming star? Did I tell you that George Abdalla continues to impress everyone. He is a natural AX driver, very calm, smooth, and intuitive. For the afternoon runs, George and Carlo Malana swapped cars and George demonstrated how to drive a twin turbo on a tight AX course. Fun to watch. Our relatively new timing system was working well too. James must be given credit for pulling all this together. It was a lot of work and he has done a great job of updating our equipment.We averaged about 85 timed runs per hour during the event! And doing it safely. We heard several compliments about how smoothly the event was run! One of the best parts of a small parking lot AX, like this one at Standridge, is that you can see what everyone is doing and learn from watching. I love the events at the MineralRing, but it's so big that you can't see 70% of the courses...not as good for spectating. So, If you can't get up the courage to start competing, come out and watch. There were LOTS of spectators for this event. You might spectate for a while and find that it's a sport you want to try. Talk to us about it...we'll twist your arm (gently).

Happy Hour at Nuevo Leon by Cheri Keehn and Mark Gluck As is always the case, February’s Happy Hour was a great success! It was a very nerve wracking event for myself this time. Not only was Ben going to be unavoidably absent at this Happy Hour, but it was expected for me to “take the reins,” so to speak, and stand in for Ben along with Dennis and Tinker. Fortunately Dennis, Tink and Lanean were wonderful in helping me to welcome the New Members. So many members are now becoming regulars at the Happy Hours. It’s fantastic to see the number of members coming to the events increasing each month.

We came, we saw... we came back for a repeat engagement! Nuevo Leon was such a hit last fall that we decided to return for our February Happy Hour. Our virtually private room came complete with picture windows on two sides, displaying Porsches of all types and vintage (supplied by us!). Any time the conversation needed a starter we simply looked outside for lots of material - or just found Tinker, who was buzzing around everywhere with Dennis' camera. The food was great, of course, and the Margaritas superb - right up until we closed the place!

I have made some wonderful friends since these Happy Hours have started. I’ve been to a few events within the Maverick Region, all of which have been fun and educational, but the focus is other things during these events. I think the monthly Happy Hours give me the chance to truly get to know the new members, and become closer to the members I have already met. The opportunity to sit down, have a drink, and have a meal with old and new members make it easier to learn about something other than just when the next DE will be, or what make or model of Porsche someone just purchased.

Another feature of these evenings is that we often are able to arrange for reserved parking, which takes the worry out of what to do with your prized car when going out for dinner. A reason for coming out that's worth considering on its own, let alone the great people you get to meet. Mark Gluck

Many thanks to Nuevo Leon! Once again they have managed to make February’s Happy Hour one of our best. The service was impeccable and the food (as usual) managed to bring to Dallas a taste of “Old-world Spain” with a flair for the art of presentation. The appetizers were fantastic. Louis and his staff bring out their best for Maverick Region and never once become flustered with a request from our group, no matter how unusual. Hope Happenings by Lanean Hughes DE Donations Well-Appreciated - The Hope Charity will receive the $225 that was collected from the parade laps at the MotorSport Ranch Driver’s Education event. Thanks to all of you who participated! Girl Scout Cookies Were A Hit! - Diane Johnson and her girl scout troop presented the Hope Shelter with 70 boxes of Girl Scout cookies on Sunday, March 11th. It was a great day and we had lots of donations and boxes of cookies to deliver. Neither rain nor more rain kept Wendy, five Girl Scouts with two leaders, and me from driving to Mineral Wells! Some of the staff members and clients were on hand for the presentation. Your Donations Are Needed - Remember, the shelter is always in need of adult and children clothing, as well as any household items you might have. As you are doing the “spring cleaning”, or your last “fall cleaning,” please remember the folks at Hope. If you have not made a trip to the shelter, please try to work it into your schedule. They love to see the Porsche Club and are so appreciative of all we do for them.

My First Driver’s Education Event by John Cochran Getting ready for my first PCA driver’s education event at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas was a learning experience. Having the car “teched” meant a trip to Park Place to get a technician to check off all the items that PCA wants reviewed. I could have had the tech done at Mayo’s in Bedford, except I knew time would be a problem. Had I a choice, I would have gone to Mayo’s where tech sessions often turn into PCA social events.

I called John Hrad at The Porsche Store because he has the best looking signs on the track, at least in my opinion. John pointed me to ProTape Signs in Carrollton. At the autocross school, I had worked out a permanent car number with Wendy Shoffit, 727, only to learn from Bill Dawson that autocross and DE events use different numbers and Mark Hanna had already claimed 727 for driving events. That’s my birth date and easy to remember. My wife, Suzanne, claims I have a someheimer’s condition known as CRS. Anyway, Bill and I were able to work out a cool number 555 - which, with a little math, duly recognizes the ages that my wife and I will hopefully achieve later this year.You will have to just guess which one of us will turn sixty. My helmet, ordered through www.helmetcity.com, arrived and I was almost ready to get educated in Cresson. Suzanne and I had gone to Motor Sports Ranch last year, spending the night at The Lodge in Granbury overlooking beautiful Lake Granbury. I had worked a corner to see if DE was really something that I would want to do. It was and for the past year I have been looking forward to my first drive on the track. I had told other new PCA members about what I had seen. Fred and Alice Wynn thought it would be a fun weekend. We agreed to share a suite at The Lodge. Another new member Suzanne and I had met during a PCA Happy Hour at Nuevo Leon, Linda Crawford, also wanted to get in the DE. Linda and her grandson, Matthew, also stayed at The Lodge. On Friday night, we got together for a toast and later feasted at the local Italian Restaurant located in Granbury Square. The weather on Friday afternoon was horrible. The drive to Granbury was remarkable only for the rain, traffic and three hours spent on the road. However, by 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning, it appeared that the rain had stopped. I got up and found a car wash. Our Boxster (pet named Elga) goes faster when she is clean, or so I imagine. At 7:15, we left Granbury and drove north to Cresson, arriving at the track just in time to register and attend the drivers’ meeting. Keith Olcha explained the black, red, yellow, white and blue/orange flags used by corner workers to communicate with the drivers. Keith also emphasized that passing is not allowed except in the straight-away and only then when the slower car gives a hand signal to pass. 16

The Green Group (those like me, Linda and Fred with no experience) was then off to the classroom where Bryan Henderson would spend the next hour and a half talking to us about driving on the MSR track. There were roughly thirty students in the Green Group. Brian must have used the phrase “counter intuitive” a least two-dozen times describing how we ought to approach corners and use the track-in cone, the apex cone and the track-out cone. That seemed easy enough sitting in the classroom chair. Doing it later on the track proved to be another. While we listened and tried to absorb Bryan’s teachings, the instructors (Red Group) were driving the still-wet track. The seasoned White and Yellow groups would follow the instructors. These groups get to drive without instructors. Finally, the Blue Group ran. Although they had already been through the initial Green Group education, they still needed an instructor with them on the track until they could be approved to drive without an instructor. “Green Run Group to the Grid” a lady’s voice echoed from the loud speakers.“Fifteen Minutes. Fifteen Minutes.” Fred in his Boxster S, Linda in her 968 and Elga headed for the grid. We had been preassigned to different run groups and were therefore parked in different sections under the metal roof-covered grid area, all the cars facing one another sort of like ribs on a spine. Bob Benson initially patrolled the spine area. Jan Mayo and Michele deJong would take over on Sunday. The Blue Group was preparing to come off the track. Where was my instructor? I began to get a little itchy. Everyone else had an instructor in the car. I got out and found taped to a pole a list matching instructors with drivers. Beside my name was that of Dave Phillips. “Great,” I thought. “ I have been in this club for more than two years and the one guy they assign as my instructor is the one I have never met.”I walked to a pod of folks that had gathered under the shed to watch a boiling black cloud that was fast approaching. “Anyone here know Dave Phillips?” I pleaded. Someone pointed him out. “That’s him in the glasses wearing the white shirt.” I gave a sigh of relief. I went over and asked,“Are you Dave Phillips?”“Yes,” he replied. I shook his hand and he asked, “Where’s your car?” I pointed to 555 and he pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket with the car number printed 444 on it. We laughed realizing that he would never have found 555 until everyone else had been directed onto the track and we would be the only two people left in the grid.

Two autocrosses and an autocross school are not much education I would learn. The storm continued to approach. As we talked, the sky darkened even more. Keith Olcha announced that it would soon blow over, at least according to the DFW weather tower. The wind had a mind of its own. It began to howl. The rain grew harder, the drops seemingly driven by


monsoon force winds. Dave opined that we weren’t going anywhere for a while so we got out and watched the storm for about an hour. We would later learn that a tornado had touched down in Sanger, just a few air miles north of Cresson.

Kevin Burke in his Targa The front finally passed and the rain slackened. I heard Charlie Davis say, “We got the Green run group. We are going to be going slow. The instructors will drive the students’ car for the first three laps anyway. Let’s go!” Everyone got back in the cars. I learned that a driver will not get the signal to exit the grid until eye contact is made with the grid boss and the driver signals he is ready with a “thumbs up.” We began rolling. Dave immediately began instruction, saying even though we got the signal, be careful because someone else might be pulling out too early. As we turned onto the track, a corner worker signaled that it was safe to proceed onto the track, but Dave cautioned that I should always look to the left for merging traffic. He then set the theme for the day: “We are going to work on being smooth. Don’t worry about your speed. Smooth is what I want you to learn. Speed follows smooth.” For the first three laps, Dave drove around the track, showing me the line where he wanted me to be on the track at all times. This, I would soon learn, is also easier said than done. After a quick three laps, we were back in the grid area and it was my turn behind the wheel. No helmets yet. Just driving about forty miles per hour around the track, and looking at the corners for the first time. Dave reminded me to watch for the corner worker stations, check gauges, look for the next track-in cone, apex cone, track-out cone, the next corner station and check mirrors for cars closing from behind. “Gosh,” I said to myself, “there is a lot more going on here in my mind than I had originally thought.” Dave quickly brought me back to reality, asking, “What was going on at that last corner?” “Gee, I dunno,” was all I could say. “I forgot to look at the corner station.” Dave laughed and said we had just received the checkered flag and would make one more cool-down lap and exit. Gosh that first session went quickly and I was already beginning to question my driving abilities after only one lap. Whew! I need more practice, I realized, as we drove into the grid area and Dave jumped out to instruct the next class. I drove back to the paddock where Linda, Fred and I talked about our first driving session. We would have three more sessions on Saturday and four more on Sunday, weather permitting. The next session, we would wear our helmets for the first time. Ninety minutes later, sitting in the grid, Dave had a hand-held radio with earpieces and microphones. He told me to force the receiver up in my helmet and over my ear. A small wire piece bent to the front of my helmet and served as a microphone. Cool, I thought. We could talk and actually hear one another. Soon it was “Thumbs up,” out of the grid and back to the track for our second session. The first turn out of the grid is Wagonwheel, an “off camber” turn to the left and followed by an up hill to Richochet.“Off camber” was a new term for me. It means that instead of the curve being banked such as an oval at a Speedway, just the opposite is true. If one were to go too fast, instead of planting the car on the

bank, you would simply slide laterally down the track. We learned that is not good. There are two off camber turns at MSR. Sideways departure allows mud to build up against the side of the tires, create a curb and perhaps cause the car to flip over. One of the first things we learned is if we were forced to leave the track, we were to leave headed straight, knowing full well that it would take a wrecker to pull the car from the muddy bog and create a “black flag” (get off the track) for everyone. This is not recommended by Dale Carnegie. If you do not believe me, just ask Brian Scudder what he did on Sunday afternoon to “Win Friends and Influence People.” Another new experience was learning that applying power while coming off a corner apex literally forces the car to the outside of the track. I didn’t know this. So as I would approach a corner, Dave would be whispering in a crescendo, “brakebrakeBrakeBRAKE” followed by “smooth-n-easy, now turn in, look for your track out cone, powerpowerPowerPOwerPOWER.” Sometimes I would be enjoying the straight away way too much and I would hear, “easyeasyeasyEeeeasyEEEEEasy.” One of the first things a student learns is that these instructors are volunteers. Their families only loan them to PCA for a day or two. They want them home safe and sound on Sunday evening. About the only thing these guys know about students like me is that I do not know what I am doing on a track. Too much testosterone is dangerous. White knuckles come easy. I learned that Dave is an oral surgeon in Sherman. One of the first things he told me is that a spinning steering wheel can take a thumb off or at least crush it. Accordingly, the safest way to hold the steering wheel is at 9:00 and 3:00 o’clock with thumbs pointed straight up on the wheel. I didn’t know that Dave was watching me like a hawk except about every five minutes, he would say, “thumbs up!” By Sunday afternoon, I would shrink in the seat every time he would have to remind me. At one point, he threatened that if I did not keep my thumbs up, he was going to stitch them in the upright position to the leather steering wheel. I also knew that he was observing me tense up. He would say, “All right, deep breath. Breathe really deep.” It was amazing how that would relax away the tension after listening to the rev limiter tell me that Elga had reached 6800 rpm in third gear on the straightaway.

Mark Bryant in his red 996. Earlier I wrote about how seemingly simple it ought to be to drive from a track-in cone to corner apex cone to track-out cone. Dave would say, “You missed that apex cone by three feet. That’s okay, we’ll get that point next time around.”He would tell me that I did not know where the right side of the car was in relation to the road. But then one lap later, I would miss the cone again. Darn. Dave offered several solutions to get me closer to the cones. First he offered to glue a piece of paper on the track so maybe I would run over it. When that mental imagery didn’t work, he told me if I got really close to the cone, I could see the naked redhead painted on the cone. That didn’t work either. Not only would I not get close enough to the cones, I would either turn in six inches too early or two feet too late. I could not seem to get consistent even though we were running the entire course in third gear. Dave said learning to shift down to second for Rattle Snake and Horseshoe would come later. 17

On Sunday morning, we were back at the track at 7:30 a.m. Saturday night, many of us had gathered at another nice restaurant on the Granbury Square for dinner and a bit of revelry. Golly, this is surely an early rising group is all I could think as I drove away from The Lodge, the sun not yet up over the horizon. Suzanne would sleep in this morn. Before long, Keith would be again explaining the rules to drivers.“Don’t stop after entering the grid area to let your instructor out of your car. Let’s have fun today. Green Group, back to the class room!” And so the day began. Bryan Henderson gave us additional information. Our vision, he explained, should not be focused on the car ahead of us. We should be looking down the track and using our peripheral vision. Entering corners we should develop a pattern of brake-throttle-turn. The goal is to be slow in and fast out. Mainly on Sunday, Bryan wanted us to ask questions. We did for about an hour and a half. It was apparent that Saturday’s session had embedded a bit of doubt into many of us. Questions were many.

After lunch on Sunday, the sun was shining, the wind eased and I dropped Elga’s top and put on the Boxster “Speedster Humps.” I like the way they look, although I don’t think they have any useful purpose other than to pad the bottom line of PAG. Driving top down on the track was a blast. I was glad I bought a helmet with a face mask. The speed increased a bit on Sunday afternoon as I became more accustomed to the track, the corner stations, and the line. I inwardly smiled as I noticed the checkered flag on the next to last lap. Finally, it’s the last run on Sunday and I am used to the procedures. Many Green Group drivers have left early. The track is not nearly as crowded. I have now become comfortable with Dave. He told me early on when I was mentally kicking myself that I should not abuse myself. He promised to give me plenty of criticism. Well, he didn’t really but I certainly did enjoy my seat time with him as my instructor. On the last run, he said of the corner at Little Bend,“that’s the best you have made that turn all weekend.” I glowed inside knowing that I was learning. Hopefully, I’ll be back for the next PCA driving event too and learn more about having fun with Elga.

The first session on Sunday was uneventful. Dave just wanted me to refamiliarize myself with the track, a “throw away session” as he described it. We missed the second driving opportunity that morning. As I pulled in the grid area, Jan Mayo came running and said there was something wrong with my right front wheel. I pulled forward a bit and backed a bit as several instructors gathered around listening to a horrible screeching sound. John Hrad from The Porsche Store came by and mentioned that their chief mechanic, John Gladwill, had arrived with their race car, had all his tools and suggested I ask John to take a look at Elga’s wheel problem. I walked back to the paddock to ask John for assistance. He gladly put me on the back of his four-wheeler, drove up to the grid and felt around under the front wheel. He had me drive Elga a few feet (without noise) and then I drove her to his trailer. John completely dismounted the right wheel assembly, brake pads, and everything else down to the spindle. In reflection, I think about Bryan Henderson’s advice.“This event.” he said,“is about having fun, learning to drive your car and doing it safely.” I really did have a lot of fun and so did everyone else in the Green Group with whom I spoke. We did it safely. The only time Elga came close to getting a scratch was in the paddock area when someone inadvertently opened a door and it came in contact with her handle. Fortunately, there was no damage. It would not be appropriate to write an article about this event without mention of the many volunteers. They did not drive, but worked the entire weekend so that others could enjoy the driving experience. If you are one of those who may have been wondering if there is any benefit to the track experience, I would answer yes. I am now driving Elga more sensibly on the public roadways, knowing that I am not a good driver and that those that have their motor vehicles in the lane next to Elga don’t even know that they are not a good driver. Scary and ironic, isn’t it. A little education is a good thing but ignorance is bliss.

McKenna Porsche 911 GT3 RS Team Sweeps ALMS Season Opener at Texas Motor Speedway Copy Provided by Porsche Motorsports FORTH WORTH, Texas March 4, 2001: A brand new Porsche 911 GT3 RS race car fielded by the McKenna Porsche Alex Job Racing Team, of Tavares, Fla, and piloted by German drivers Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr, dominated the GT class by scoring a one-lap, pole-to-flag victory in today’s Leather Center Grand Prix of Texas. For Porsche, it was the 19th win in 21 American Le Mans Series races over two years. The second McKenna Porsche 911 GT3 RS, driven by Randy Pobst, from Melbourne, Fla., and Christian Menzel, from Germany, finished second, but spent the whole two hours and 45 minutes fighting off three BMW M3s and three other Porsches, all on the same lap for most of the event. This gave Alex Job Racing a one-two finish, its first ever in the two years of American Le Mans Series competition. The Said/Stuck BMW was third. Luhr, who had put the car on the pole yesterday, was gratified that the rain stayed away from the Texas Motor Speedway and he could run in sunny, dry conditions. After running the 24 Hours of Daytona last month in the rain, and practice and qualifying here in the rain, the race car performed perfectly in the improved conditions, said Luhr, who scored his fifth ALMS career victory. Maassen has tasted ALMS victory seven times, and narrowly missed winning the driver’s title in 2000. The two drivers were teammates last year with Dick Barbour Racing, but had never shared the same car. Perhaps the most frustrated driver in the GT class was Bob Wollek, who, along with Johnny Mowlem, put the White Lightning Petersen Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RS in the top three several times, but had to settle for a fourth place finish. No less than three times during the event, Wollek was shunted by other competitors, resulting in either off-course or spin-out incidents. Even so, Mowlem and Wollek finished only 1.6-seconds out of third place. Other top Porsche GT finishers included the Kelly-Moss Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R driven by Christophe Bouchut, from France, and Atlanta’s Anthony Lazzaro (sixth); the Tom Burgess/Stefano Buttiero Seikel Porsche 911 GT3 RS (eighth); and the Kelly-Moss Porsche 911 GT3 R of Rick Polk/Cort Wagner (tenth). Built by Porsche Motorsport in the Research and Development Department at Weissach, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS delivers 420 horsepower from its 3.6-liter normally-aspirated engine. In 1999, its first year of competition, the car finished 1-2 in class at Le Mans, and has won its class in the American Le Mans Series two years in a row. Porsche also won its class with the GT3 R in the Grand American Road Racing series in 2000, and is off to a fast start to defend that title with a 1-2-3 GT finish at the recent Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona. The #23 Lucas Luhr/Sascha Maassen Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsche 911 GT3 RS The new 2001 model of the Porsche 911 has been designated as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and is almost identical to the 2000 Porsche 911 GT3 R. The new car has a larger front radiator, a slightly different front spoiler and rear wing, and other minor changes, but remains the same for the major components. Current GT3 R owners can purchase an update kit from Porsche which incorporates all the improvements in the new car. The next event for the American Le Mans Series circuit will be the Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring presented by Dodge, which will take place on Saturday, March 17, 2001. As they did a year ago, Speedvision will telecast the Sebring event from flag-to-flag. PCA Zone 5 has experienced a dramatic growth in track events in the last 2 years. This growth has provided a lot of very rewarding Porsche moments for a lot of participants. It has also created an enormous demand for the "Supporting Cast" of volunteers to keep the events flowing smoothly off the track, and to provide safety and support service at the corners on the track. We have been fortunate to lean on SCCA flag teams in the past, but now we are having so many events that conflict with the SCCA schedule that we are going to be left high and dry for flagging and communications workers. One obvious solution is to ask for volunteer support from members who are interested in track events, but perhaps not quite ready to participate, or are not able to gain entry into the crowded field in the lower run groups. These members can learn quite a bit while being a corner worker. Not only is working a corner a real eye opener, but it also offers the best view in the house. In the 1960s when I was just getting into cars, you had to be 21 to race in SCCA, but could stand Flag at age 18. I learned more in three years working Flag and Communication than I would have learned from Bondurant or Skip Barber school. Members new and old should know proper worker techniques and to assist in this endeavor we will be conducting a Flag and Communication clinic in the not to distant future for HCR and for MAV. LSR held one the first Friday in February at TWS. We generally try to rotate corner workers and get a broad view and perspective to folks that want to broaden their exposure. Spaghetti Warehouse Dinner Social by Lanean Hughes About 40 Maverick’s gathered at The Spaghetti Warehouse in Bedford on Saturday, February 17th for our dinner social. The food and conversation were both delightful. Also there to enjoy the evening was Sally and her family from the Hope Shelter. Sally, Ricky, Emily and Riley all seemed to really enjoy meeting many of the Maverick members in attendance. She spoke to us about where she has been and where she is going and expressed how much she appreciated Maverick Region and their contributions to her family.
