Road Ramblings by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President
L
ast month I promised I’d give you,in my opinion,my list of 15 of my favorite greatest Porsches. Well,I will do that further down the page, but first some miscellaneous news: 2002 was a record year for 911 (996) sales in North America, however Boxster sales declined slightly compared to the previous year. The U.S.will receive an allocation of 1000 of the new GT3s. I have seen the order guide for this car, and I am drooling! The specifications are awesome- a car for both road and track excellence.
Currently, there are 53,000 active members in the Porsche Club of America. All told, PCA held over 1000 separate events for enthusiasts in the U.S. An event is a single DE, Autocross, Concours, etc. It is also expected that Cayenne sales should increase membership in PCA. The introduction is March 17th, and some of you have already taken test-drives in this ultimate SUV. As far as events so far since my last column, I’ve been to the Drivers Education at MotorSport Ranch, and the Autocross 102 class at Mineral Wells. Both were excellent events and it was nice to get back behind the wheel of my 911. April 5 marks our first Rally, and there is a driving tour through the Hill County on April 11-13. We’ve also got an autocross at none-other than the Texas Motor Speedway bus parking lot on April 13th. There is also a high-speed time-trial at Mineral Wells on the 26th. As usual there are April lunches and our monthly Happy Hour as well. Look for details in this issue. So what about my list of all-time favorites? Okay, my cars fall into two categories: road cars and race cars. Road cars followed by race cars, in somewhat particular order: 1) 1973 911 Carrera RS Touring- white with blue inverse Carrera script. A Euro-only car in its day, it is light, taut, fast, no-power anything (Except brakes). 2.7liter engine, the production run was the basis for homologating the RSRs in 1973 and 1974. It is the perfect normally aspirated 911 coupe in terms of looks, throttle response, and handling.
Pedro Rodriguez drove the car that year. Won Daytona, but not LeMans. 10) 1975 RSR - #59 Brumos driven by Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood. Option M491 from the factory gave you an RSR. They won the Camel GT series that year. Also won in SCCA Trans-Am. Brumos and Vasek-Polak were the most heavily involved dealers in racing through the 70s and 80s. In the 1990s Champion Motors in South Florida stepped up as a heavily involved dealer. 11) 1978 935/78 – “Moby Dick.” The 935 designation allowed the production based 934 cars to evolve into “silhouette” racers in 1975 for FIA Group 5 world sports car racing. These 911 derivatives had to look like production cars but not only could they have tube-frame chassis; they could also add wild aerodynamic aids. 12) 1981 936-003 - #11, LeMans winner driven by Bell and Ickx. This was an open cockpit car, with 917 parts, and the type 935/75 engine- taken from the Indy-car project. 2.65 liters – 620 hp, 1250 lbs. 13) 1983 956 - #3 Rothmans, LeMans winner driven by Holbert, Haywood, and Schuppan. The 956 and it’s long wheelbase brother the 962 (IMSA) were the most successful sports cars of all-time in terms of number of overall wins in endurance races and their ability to be sold by the factory to numerous private entrants. The departed Al Holbert with his Lowenbrau-sponsored 962 was the perennial IMSA winner in the 1980s. 14) 1998 GT1 - #26, LeMans winner driven by McNish, Aiello and Ortelli. Last of the FIA GT1 class endurance racecars. They came to the US at Sebring in 1998. 15) 2002 GT3 - #66, The Racers Group. GT class winner last year at Daytona, Lemans, and a top-5 finish at Sebring. Like the 962, a factory end-user racecar sold to dozens of privateer teams.
You can find pictures and read about these cars on the web, or in several excellent Porsche history books available at Amazon, Classic Motor books, etc. I hope this list spurs your own favorites and don’t forget to drop me a list of the Porsches you favor. I can think of 5-10 more I’d list. Till next month, then…
2) 1955 550/1500 GS Spyder – silver. A race car for the road. James Dean drove one- the rest is history. Much smaller than a Boxster, but obviously the retro-design influence. Max Hoffman named the car the Spyder. 3) 1956 Speedster - Carrera GS option, Red. Type 547 four-cam engine option gave the car 110hp. Max Hoffman did it again. He wanted a car to compete with the Jaguars of the time, and persuaded Porsche management in 1953 to bring in a cheaper convertible priced less than the Jags. They chopped the windshield and stripped the car a bit and named it the Speedster. 4) 1965 904/6 Carrera GTS – Silver. These fiberglass Dino-Ferrari looking coupes with the 901/20 6-cylinder engine are beautiful from all viewing angles. Hans Tomala designed this car under the guidance of Butzi Porsche for FIA Group 3 GT class. Like most GT cars of their era, these were saleable street-legal vehicles produced with racing homologation in mind. Hey, when your name is Butzi, you’d better produce some cool cars. 5) 1976 Type 934 – White. A street legal 934, produced as the ultimate development of the 930 of the time. Besides Group 4 FIA racing, these cars competed in the Trans-Am in the US in 1977. This car was based on the 1976 Turbo-Carrera with a three-liter engine producing 485 hp and a body with wide fender flares front and rear. 6) 1988 959 – Silver. Computer-controlled four-wheel drive. Twinturbocharged, 450 horsepower. Adjustable speed-dependent ride-height. Never allowed to be imported into the US until recently, this car was successful in Porsche’s rally program and is still an exotic work of art, mechanically and visually. 7) 2002 GT2 – Midnight Blue Metallic. A modern classic. Where can you get this kind of performance and looks with A/C, stereo, and power everything? 8) 1973 917/30 – Sunoco Can-Am car driven by Mark Donohue for Penske racing. In it’s day it was faster than Formula 1 cars. It dominated the series, but this was the last car produced for the last unlimited racing class. 1100 horsepower. 9) 1970 917K – #2 Gulf blue with orange. John Wyer’s team. If you’ve ever watched the movie LeMans, you know what I’m talking about. If not, rent the movie!

A
re you ready for the Time Trial and Autocross season? I know I am! By the time you read this, we will have already had our first Time Trial and Autocross weekend at Mineral Wells. I’m hearing that these driving events are expected to fill quickly this year, so you'd better register soon if you would like to further sharpen your handling and course navigation skills. We are also quickly approaching our next Drivers Education event to be held at Texas Motor Speedway during our annual Club Race in May. This particular DE is open to all blue-solo and above drivers who have participated in previous DEs. For more information about this event, see page 13 of this issue. The application to participate in the DE can be found on page 23.
you thought was possible. You will also be exhausted after driving at your limit for an entire weekend. You can find more information about the June DE in the ad below and on the Maverick Region website www.pca.org/mav <http://www.pca.org/mav>. Follow the "Drivers Education" link for information, dates, and enrollment application forms. The application deadline for the June DE will be in *early* May. I need to stress how important it will be to get your application postmarked on the deadline date to get into this event, it fills up VERY quickly. Lastly, I want to thank all who helped write articles, build event ad graphics, and help gather articles and pictures. Thanks to you, this issue is packed full of great reading!
The Maverick Region’s next instructional event will be the June MotorSport Ranch Drivers Education. Unlike the Club Race DE, the June DE is open to ALL members who would like the opportunity to "learn the line" at MotorSport Ranch’s 1.7 mile, 11-turn road course. If you have never been on the track at MSR, you should seize this opportunity to explore your car’s handling limits. Instructors will be available for all students. I encourage you to get out there and give it a try. You will have more fun than
Maverick Minutes by Mimi Spreen
T
he Board Meeting was held on Tuesday,March 4, 2003 at the home of Lisa and Mark Steele and, of course, Cindy.
Attendees: Lisa and Mark Steele, Michael Wingfield, Keith Olcha, Joel Nannis, Wendy and Jasmine Shoffit, Cody Sears, Noby Takahashi, Lanean Hughes, Mimi Spreen, Dennis Chamberlain, Bob Knight and Dee Lersch. The meeting started at 7:04 pm with Round the Room. Lanean Hughes - DE applications went out this week. Seven Club Racers from Kansas will be at the event. Michael Wingfield - The DE went well. There were 148 in attendance, including instructors. Water on the track caused problems for some. We're now ramping up for the next DE. Joel Nannis - Membership is up, oh and by the way, Happy Birthday to Joel on Thursday!! Noby Takahashi - Insurance paperwork ok for upcoming events. Needs to contact Ted Glover to get specifics on upcoming tours to complete insurance. Wendy Shoffit - Intro to Autocross and Ladies Autocross School went well, the weekend netted a profit. About 34 students for the March 8th Autocross and about 1/3 to 1/2 of the students carried over from the previous school. Applications for June DE will be on line next week. Slipstream will be late this month. We all need to follow through with our commitments to write articles, etc in a timely manner to help Matt Platts. 8
Keith Olcha - The next three Board meetings, April, May and June will be held at Keith's house to help prevent any confusion. Cody Sears - The Intro to AX and the Ladies AX practice sections used the same distances between cones in the slalom, same radius in the skid pad, etc. as were used in the actual courses the students drove. The consistency helped the students quite a bit as they could used what they learned from the individual sections. Dennis Chamberlain - The Happy Hour at Sherlocks had about 43 people and 5 of those were new members. Dennis discussed the Mentor program and agreed to start a temporary program of pairing new members with old members for several events and see how it works. Dee Lersch - Contest to come up with new slogan on T-shirts netted 5 suggestions and we chose a winner. It will be announced with the artwork shortly. The Goody Store sold it's last grill badges and in order to get new ones made without the Porsche emblem, it would have to be re-tooled which raises the cost quite a bit. Lee agreed to email Bob Miller, at National regarding this issue and report back to the Board. Bob Knight - He has received the money from the DE. We made money at the Dinner Social. The Maverick Region tax return has been completed and signed by Keith, so Bob will mail it off. Motion to adjourn was made at 8:15 and seconded. Motion approved. The next meeting will be at Keith Olcha’s house on Tuesday, April 8th. Food will be served at 6:30, the Board Meeting will start at 7:00.
Happy Hour at Sherlock’s Baker Street Pub by Jean Frick I am a retired teacher and symphony musician (violin) and very right-brained. Although we are an unlikely couple, we married on Groundhog Day 2000, and we have recently settled in an apartment home in Fort Worth. Dave has finally realized his dream and will complete his first childhood with his special order Porsche 986 Boxster, which we picked up in Plano on February 7, 2003.
A
s new Maverick Region members, we were anxious to attend our first Happy Hour. We had chatted with Dennis Chamberlain online, but I was a bit surprised when he asked me to write an article about the event for Slipstream.
Let me introduce you to the Fricks. My husband Dave is a retired engineer from Lockheed Martin, who owned a 1955 356 Speedster (or did it own him?). With a growing family, he had to replace his dream car with a Chevy, and he has wanted another Porsche ever since.

Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Tinker Edwards, and Mark Gluck
The Briggs and Norwoods All of this is to tell you how exciting it has been to meet so many of you, and how warmly we were welcomed into the group. There must have been nearly fifty members there, standing around discussing the fine points of their Porsches and the upcoming MRPCA events. It was like a live version of the Yahoo E mail board. We were introduced to a number of members, and others came up to introduce themselves to us. A very friendly bunch!
Jean and Dave Frick
One thing nearly everyone commented on was our MR nametags, which we ordered at the new members party on January 9th. Fortunately, they arrived soon enough to wear to Happy Hour. Even the rainy weather and a 102 mile round trip from SW Fort Worth failed to dampen our enthusiasm for new friends and a lively evening. (Being from Cowtown, and not familiar with the tollway, we managed to get into a toll tag lane as we exited at Belt Line. With no receptacle for our cash, we went on through… so Dave spent a $ .37 stamp to mail in his check for $ .45. Wonder how often that happens?).
Hopefully we will arrive at the April Happy Hour (at Malibu Speed Zone at I35 and Walnut Hill Lane) without a similar incident. In the meantime, we hope to see you at the DE’s in Cresson, about 15 miles south of our apartment, or on one of the many tours.

Zims Swap Meet by David Mock
T
he first Maverick swap meet of 2003 at Zims has come and gone. A special thank you to Al Zim for his hospitality in providing the space and necessary needs to make such an event possible. I also want to thank all of you who braved the slightly uncomfortable cold weather. And while the sun never showed up, a lot of you Porsche enthusiasts did. This fact was obvious by how fast the coffee and donuts flew off the table inside Zims. There were familiar and new faces there and the entire concrete slab was full. I was told by one of them that this fact constitutes a “successful swap meet”. The mood was great and the “deals” were to be had. I know plenty of us ran home with our treasures, either from venders, or the 15 percent off retail buys from Zims.
Most of us probably spent the rest of the weekend playing with our hobbies and/or obsessions. Until next time (October maybe), keep turning those wrenches.

s a sophomore in high school, I realize that years have flown by, and I can finally drive! This is a very exciting time, almost even scary. In the world we live in, there are some really bad drivers. Therefore, safety and knowing how to handle your car are essential. I recently attended the Autocross 102 school, which was my second driving event. This simple, eight hour course helps you to find your car’s ‘limits’. Out there we push our cars as hard as they will go and we end up in situations (i.e. spinning out) that you
through, and one of decreasing distance which forces you to slow down as you move through it. I was talking to one of my friends the other day and she mentioned to me that she was recovering from a wreck. As any friend would, I asked her if she was ok and she proceeded to tell me what happened. At the time, she had only had her license for five days, so I am sure that she was a little bit on the nervous side. She was driving home in her mom’s van by herself and she encountered a box on the road. As she swerved to miss the box, she found herself in gravel going too fast. Naturally, she spun out. She told me that she “tried to find the brakes, but pushed the gas instead.” This only made things worse. As she tried to find the

could face on your daily drive to work. We practice on skid pads, which are designed to help you to spin, so that you can learn how to handle one when it occurs. There are braking exercises that let you find out how fast you car will really stop in worst case scenarios. The last of the exercises we do is the slalom. There are three different types of these: one of equal distance, one of increasing distance which allows you to pick up speed as you go
Although these autocross schools are fun, it is not just playtime out there. You do learn a whole lot about your car and how to handle it. Even if racing is not something you want to pursue, like myself, I still highly recommend attending a few of these schools; especially if you are a new driver. Even if you get to the school and have absolutely no fun driving, you will love the social aspect of it. The people there are amazing! My instructor,

brake pedal again, she saw “something blue” in front of her. She then found the brakes and slammed on them, but she was too late and she ran into a blue vehicle. She went to the hospital and luckily only ended up with bruised ribs and a sore body. After she told me her story, I told her about the driving courses I had been taking. I told her that we spin out on purpose so that we can learn how to control it when it happens unexpectedly with other cars on the road. I know that if I had been driving instead of her, I would have been able to handle my car much better. I, more than likely, would have just come out of that a little ‘shook up’ instead of with a sore body and a wrecked car.

Time Trial 103 By Alex Cobb When I first got my silver ‘78 911 Targa about six months ago, I was dying to take it to a driving event, as I had never been to one. That was one of the main purposes I had in mind for the 911, when I bought it, being that is already setup for that purpose with all the goodies from roll cage to race seats to a nice, loud exhaust. My first event was the weekend of Time Trials 5 and 6, and was exactly a week after getting the car from Austin. I was hooked before the event even started, and had a blast over that weekend, but afterwards it was clear the biggest thing I needed was more seat time and instruction before the next season of time trials began. With that in mind I anxiously counted the days to each DE and then to Autocross 102 and Time Trials 103, as I knew they would be an excellent place to continue to learn how to drive my 911.
speeding along at about 95 for fear I will be late and primarily not wanting to miss Wendy Shoffit’s stentorian shout of “DRRIIIVVVEEERRRRSSS MEETTTIIIINNNGGG!!!!!!” (think Frau Farbissina from Austin Powers, except with a Texas accent rather than a German one). All of the sudden as I am happily cruising, I hear this vicious vibrating noise coming from the back of the car. I pull over to the shoulder quickly and get out of the car to see the rear tire is flat - pick you favorite expletive. I didn’t have a lot of room in the car with all my gear so of course I decided not to take the spare tire. This decision was also motivated by issues of weight reduction as the car clearly would be much lighter without that spare with the heavy, non-forged rim, these things being crucial for the trip to Mineral Wells. I did have a can of Fix-A-Flat, but the fact I could put my hand
...the instructors drove and rode in student’s cars to provide instruction... through the sidewall seemed to imply that fix wouldn’t work.
Alex Cobb rushes toward the finish line Beep, beep, beep, beep… the furor from the alarm clock erupted much too early that morning, 6:15 to be exact. I know that is late for some of you out there, but at age 22, I am trying to kick the college sleep habits, so therefore if it is still dark outside when I wake up that is considered too early! After packing up the car, I was headed off and couldn’t wait to get there. Driving along, I realized I had forgotten to get the new brake pads I bought, as mine were running thin, and thought I might have to change them after Saturday’s event (I was staying in Mineral Wells that night so as to not have to get up so early). Of course I am then running late after I head back to the house to get them.

Finally, I have everything, and am headed west on 820,
Now perhaps I should move on to what actually happened at the track that weekend rather than my arduous journey there. The morning of each day consisted of exercises in preparation for each afternoon, which would be a timed autocross on Saturday, and a time trial on Sunday. Sunday was definitely my favorite of the two as the course was longer with higher speeds, and there was more track time. Since the time trial class is what I am supposed to be writing about, I will stick to that day. The morning began with exercises that were extremely beneficial as they prepared us for the afternoon’s time trial. The afternoon course was basically split in half to allow two smaller courses that became the exercises. Instructors were assigned to students, with Noby Takahashi as my instructor. The instructors drove and rode in student’s cars

As I am about to call someone, namely my parents, to bring the spare tire from my garage, thinking I will miss this whole day by the time everything is taken care of, I look up to see a black 911 Carrera pull up behind me! Then miraculously, Rick Randall steps out, and after seeing I have a flat, informs me he has two extra tires! Fortuitously, he was also running late, saw my car, and just “happened” to have two spare Fuchs with tires. We got the tire mounted and headed on to Mineral Wells, and still made it in time to hear Wendy call everyone together for the driver’s meeting.

experienced driver, and has a Boxster S that he tracks. However, the Boxster S is quite different from my 911 with its not so slick-shifting 915 gearbox. It also had Rick’s tires on the rear, which had seen better days, making for lots of oversteering fun. With Noby at the wheel it was a wild ride to say the least. While he put the car around the track a quick pace we also had two spins, including a spectacular one on the last lap right after crossing start-finish even taking out a cone, and dragging it under the car in the process. Needless to say, Noby has taken quite a ribbing from just about everyone,
After taking many laps through the exercises, I was beginning to get a good feel of how to negotiate those sections of the course, and was definitely looking forward to putting the whole thing together after lunch and run Time Trial Course 1 (This just happens to be the same course that will be run at the first time trial of the year coming up on March 29th. Some of you veterans may need to watch your whaletails, as us newbies got some good practice in on this course setup…). The course was really a blast, with the best section being the exit from a long 180-degree right-hander going into the two main straights, which are linked together by a fast sweeper. This combination allowed many drivers to go full throttle from the right-hander all the way into the braking zone before the hairpin at the end of the back straight, which is a long distance for those of you who have never been out there. Personally, I hit higher speeds here than at the Motorsport Ranch DE, although much of the increased speed could be attributed to the fact that was my first DE there and I “hopefully” have improved since then. The format for the afternoon was alternating between working a corner with your instructor while the first group drove and then switch roles. After working our corner we were ready to drive, and Noby, my instructor would be taking the hot laps first to “show me the course”. Noby is a talented and

several places as I pushed it bit too hard at times, but luckily all I had learned about car control over the weekend allowed me to recover and avoid any standing ovations for pirouettes.
especially the 911 drivers, such as Eric Erz, whose weekend spins were way into the double digits.

It was a great weekend, and I learned so much and had a terrific time. It was an effective school that ran seamlessly due to the excellent coordination and execution by all who volunteered their weekend to help teach us how to better drive our cars. Many thanks go out to all who assisted in any way or fashion. We are all continuous indebted to you as each event comes to a close. Anyone who has never been out to Mineral Wells should certainly consider coming for an event. It is a perfect place to learn, as there is no real risk of damaging your car in the “unlikely” event you ever should spin. As far as myself, with every event I am even more shamelessly addicted to tracking the car. The intoxicating sound of that flat six roaring at 6500 RPMs, while drifting towards the track edge is an experience unrivaled. I can’t wait until the first time trial.

After this I was definitely inspired, and so we traded places and joined the grid. James Shoffit, who was working grid amongst many other jobs, waved us off. As I became familiar with the course we gradually picked up speed, and were having an incredible time. We finished and checked the lap times. I had dropped a little each lap so I was pleased, but knew there was still more time to be eliminated upon the next time out. Later on, after corner working, I went out again, this time once with Noby, and then solo. Going out solo was a lot of fun, although it was a little scary too. I no longer had Noby saying “easy, easy…” when I came in to a turn a little to hot, as the training wheels were now off, the other benefit was that the car was quite a bit lighter without Noby in there – its all about the weight reduction, you know. I had some good laps and flirted with the edge several times. I nearly spun the car in

Dinner Social at Dos Gringos by Mimi Spreen
M
If any of you have tried to find a restaurant that can accommodate 40-60 people on a Saturday night in a separate or private room, you have some idea of what I was faced with. Add to that the fact that I don't know the Ft. Worth area at all, and you can see the dilemma I was in. Out came the Ft. Worth phone book and I let my fingers do the walking. When I got to the "D's" in the phone book, I called Dos Gringos and asked my usual questions and to my surprise, they had a private room that will hold up to 50 and it wasn't booked for the night in question, Saturday, March 1st. I booked it over the phone and quickly emailed Bob Knight to send the deposit check, so we wouldn't lose the place. As it turned out, this was a pretty good location, close to the Ft. Worth Zoo, The Kimball Museum and other museums and

y goals in finding a place for the March Dinner Social, was to #1 find a restaurant in Ft. Worth, #2 find a restaurant that had a separate or private room that could accommodate up to 60 people, and #3 well, I don't remember what #3 was, but I'm sure it was pretty important.
Mimi jots down everyone’s food preferences Our next Dinner Social is the always popular "May at Mayo's" and we will be dining on Babe’s Chicken. Check out the ad below for all the particulars, date, time, price and the always important RSVP deadline. If I don't receive your RSVP by the deadline, not only does the price go from $15 to $20, but you have to wait until everyone else gets their food, before you can get yours. Hope to see everyone at Mayo's. Hey, Ed, how many people can your shop hold?
pretty easy to find, even for me (except I received directions from an employee at Dos Gringos that were incorrect and wound up being almost the last person to arrive) Since the RSVP's come through me, I knew who was coming, but as usual, we had at least 6 people show up who didn't RSVP which made the room a little tight, but we set up an extra table, found some more chairs and were ready without too much effort. There wasn't a "program" we had to follow and that allowed everyone to mix and mingle and talk to some members we haven't seen in years.
The food and drinks were good and it turned out to be a really great place. I'll be sure to keep Dos Gringos in my file. We actually weren't the only car club there that night. I saw at least 2 other car clubs sitting at large tables in the main part of the restaurant, so I guess it's a pretty popular place to have dinner socials.

National Concours Judges Seminar by Ron Knight
O
n Sunday, March 2, untold numbers of Porsche enthusiasts braved the snowy roads of Denver Colorado to participate in the PCA National Concours Judges Seminar held at Prestige Imports in Littleton. It was a true thrill to find other Porsche owners that are as enthusiastic (okay, fanatical) about clean Porsche motorcars as I am. As a relative newbie to PCA and the Maverick Region PCA I was wondering where the concours enthusiasts were. I’ve met plenty of MR PCA track enthusiasts, but hadn’t yet stumbled onto the MR PCA concours buffs.
could conduct mock concours judging over the course of the day. The Porsches brought in for the seminar included a pristine 356, a 914, a 911E, a 912, a 928, a 968 S2, 911 C2 Cab, a 1997 911 Turbo S (WOW), a 1998 Boxster, and a 911 Targa. It was worth the trip just to see these beautiful Porsches! The 6 hour seminar began with a concours tutorial presented by Dennis Frick (a 20+ year concours veteran from Harrisburg, PA), followed by a Q&A session where neophytes such as I could ask questions. I learned of the three groups: Preparation, Restoration and Preservation and the Divisions, Classes and rules associated with each. The attendees then divided into the three groups (Preparation, Restoration and Preservation), for which a panel of three accredited national judges had been selected as lead instructors for hands on training. I participated in the Preparation, or “search for dirt”, group that featured Bob Gale, Willie Wilson and Paul Gilbreath as the Preparation Group Instructor Judges.
Locating the PCA National Concours Judges Seminar letter on the web I signed up and made the trek to Denver. It was a wonderful experience! The event was co-hosted by the Rocky Mountain and Alpine Regions, with Zone 9 Representative, Kathy Frick, leading the

Following instruction on the nuances of Preparation Group Concours d’Elegance judging, we divided into two teams for actual concours judging of Porsches that were on site for this event. Our Group worked with Jerry Medina’s 1998 Boxster and with a 1997 Twin Turbo S. The attached photo shows part of our group around Jerry’s Boxster. We conducted timed concours judging of the two cars; it is amazing how swiftly 5 minutes passes when you are judging and filling out the judging sheets. When our timed judging was over our instructor judges critiqued our judging sheets, providing feedback and instruction for improvement of our techniques. charge. Kathy and her event staff had ensured that accommodations, arrangements and seminar were totally first class. As would be expected, the majority of attendees were seasoned Porsche Concours d’Elegance participants and judges. While the preponderance of attendees were from Colorado and neighboring states, there were attendees from Maryland, Virginia, and two Texans: PCA veteran Willie Wilson from El Paso and yours truly from MR PCA. The facility at Prestige Import was ideal for the seminar since it was able to house 12 Porsches in the enclosed high bay where we

Later, after lunch, we reassembled as Dennis Frick led a review of judging techniques. At the conclusion of the seminar I and my fellow attendees were awarded our PCA PORSCHE Concours d’Elegance National Judge pin, certifying that we had successfully passed our training. In retrospect it was a great experience, especially meeting such fine fellow Porsche enthusiasts such as Jerry Medina, Bob Gale, and Alex Illornete. I can hardly wait for our 2004 Parade Concours d’Elegance on July 5th in beautiful Fort Worth as well as the next MR PCA Concours or Shine & Show event!
