The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, Maverick Region President

I

n 1968, (I know, I know; many of you were not even born yet), The Beatles’ famous White Album contained a strange little tune written by the late John Lennon titled Happiness is a Warm Gun. Who knew then how ironic the song would become following his untimely demise in front of the Dakota in December of 1980. On a much brighter note, I propose a car-oriented, 2005, revision to be titled "Happiness is a Warm Smile" (from a happy driving school student). In the past few weeks, I have been privileged to be part of a team of instructors at events that included the Ladies only and Autocross 101 schools at Pennington Field, the Ruf sponsored Drivers’ Education at MotorSport Ranch and the Autocross 102/Time Trial 103 schools at Mineral Wells. One common factor in all these events was the happy smiles on the students’ faces at the end of each of the instruction sessions. OK, with the possible exception of the Saturday rain at the DE. Even then, lots of people used the slower rain pace to really learn the line. This paid off handsomely on Sunday when the weather turned out to be markedly better. It is probably safe to say that most of the instructors at these various events are all certified car nuts. One thing that really gets these people excited is to have someone else get as excited as they are about

their favorite pastime. Why else would they work so hard? Make no mistake, it can be work jumping in and out of cars all day. For example, a full DE weekend with two students and some personal driving time can add up to twenty-four sessions on the track. That can be almost 400 miles of high speed, full concentration track travel. On the other hand, if it wasn't fun and satisfying, no one would volunteer to do it. That smiling student is well worth the effort. ... Make

no mistake, it can be work jumping in and out of cars all day ... One of the great things I noticed at these events is that we had a lot of first-timers. That's healthy for the club and it provides the nucleus for the future leadership. Another interesting item is how many drivers of other marques attend our schools. You name it and it was probably there - Corvettes, Miatas, S-2000s, and the list goes on. This is obviously a tribute to all the hard work that goes into organizing and running such a well-oiled event. Since I started on a Beatles note, let me remind you, you can always get Help with our developing driver program as you travel The Long and Winding Road to becoming a competitive driver. As for me, I hope to still be going strong When I'm 64.

Maverick Minutes by Wendy Shoffit

T

he March board meeting got to a slightly late start at 7:11 PM. Members in attendance were Lanean Hughes, Mike Brodigan, Monda Degan, Ed Martin, Jeff Atkins, Albert Sansores, Ponce deLeon, Wendy Shoffit, Rocky Johnson, Mike Holloway, Andy Miller, Bill Miller, Chuck Machala, Matt Platts, and Mark Gluck. Mike Holloway is working hard to get Slipstream back on track. He will begin enforcing a strict deadline of the 12th of the month for articles and photos. He has a few miscellaneous items to add to the March issue before it goes to press. Mike Brodigan discussed possibly increasing the size of Slipstream by 4 pages. There will be a Slipstream meeting with everyone involved to talk about it further. We might add a color cover, if it could be a sponsored issue. Mike Holloway will speak with Fran to get quotes. All ads have been paid for. Andy Miller said that the tour season gets kicked off Sunday, March 13th. Everything is ready. Ads have been done by Dennis Chamberlain for the April and May tours. Insurance is obtained and everything is ready to go. He addressed questions about tour safety. All drivers are encouraged to drive within their comfort levels. Maps are provided, showing locations of all stops and approximate times for those stops. He emphasized the importance of keeping track of the car following them by always looking in the mirrors. Chuck Machala mentioned the first autocross will be on April 3rd at TMS, sponsored by Park Place Porsche. It will be the same course as used during Parade ’04. He will arrange to make a poster for the event for display at Park Place. Lanean Hughes shared that the final drawings for the new Hope Shelter will be done and all permits submitted within the next few weeks. She is confident that everything will go through smoothly. They need the funds available by April 1 to start buying construction materials. The shelter is exploring a possible loan to cover expenses beyond donations. Plumbing labor has been donated by an individual and other construction labor by Kroger. The annual Club Race will be on Memorial Weekend at MotorSport Ranch.

8

There will be a solo-only DE in conjunction with the CR. Needs lots of volunteers and drivers. Tracey Gross is also setting up a golf outing during that weekend. Mark Gluck said that all the insurance needs for upcoming events have been taken care of. Monda Degan mentioned the upcoming Happy Hour at Cantina Laredo (March 17th). They are planning to go to the Bavarian Grill in April and Joe T. Garcia’s in May. Wants to get the list of new members to personally call and invite them. The board discussed finding an email reminder system. Matt Platts will look into it. Jeff Atkins said that the quarter-end is coming up. He will bring financial reports to the next meeting. Albert Sansores asked if there are other venues locally to race on. Unfortunately, there aren’t any. Many have been proposed, but few have materialized. Wendy Shoffit said that the 2-day AX/TT school was this past weekend. There were roughly 60 combined students in attendance. Thankfully, a ton of volunteers helped out. The event was a success and made a small profit. The new radios, though, were not a hit. We will look into other radio alternatives. She reminded Mike Holloway that the April issue of Slipstream should contain the membership directory. Rocky Johnson informed the group that the date for May at Mayo’s has been set for Saturday, May 7th. Jan and Ed Mayo will work with Babe’s Fried Chicken and Ducky Bob’s (with advice from Mimi Spreen). Joe McGlohen will do the beverages. Rocky will accept RSVPs. We will explore the possibility of using Evite to take reservations for social and other events. Wendy Shoffit will look into it and report later. Lastly, Robyn Howard wants to buy new inventory for the goodie store. We discussed budgeting and inventory reporting with relation to the store. The next board meeting will be Monday, April 4 at Fifth Gear Motorsports in Lewisville. The meeting was adjourned at 9:01 PM.

Zanotti, circulation director of Texas Driver Magazine, the accompanying pictures were taken using his Nikon 12-24 mm lens, which he was kind enough to loan me for the evening. It is an expensive lens. I figure Tim will have to sell about 40 subscriptions to pay for it, so I immediately signed up, hoping he’ll loan it to me again some day.

Passion and Performance by Mike Holloway, Slipstream Managing Editor MH: And to think, many folks would have cursed the wind that brought you that car, you turned around and actually did something with it. That's pretty cool. Any good stories about the 914?

P

orsche owners typically have a unique outlook on life. Often, they are people who demonstrate both performance and passion, achieving high levels of excellence through their unique outlook, internal motivation, life experiences and personal philosophy. Slipstream’s Passion and Performance segment highlights these people. Please meet Wayne Dempsey.

WD: I remember one day I was driving on the 405 in a 914 rattletrap. I was headed for the doctor. I had been under a bunch of stress and was having mild chest pains. I'm driving along and all of a sudden I hear a loud BANG then a strange lurching. I looked to my left and out of the corner of my eye saw my rear wheel rolling across four lanes of traffic! I stopped the car, got out and walked back to the SUV now parked behind me. The SUV was driven by a German guy who told me that I just lost my wheel and that I should try to drive the car off to the side of the road. Not really thinking clearly, I got back into the car and drove it on the disc to the side of the road (the car sort of skipped across the road). The funny part of the story is that I had already agreed to sell this particular car to a friend in Arizona. When I got back home and called him to tell him about the damage, I was surprised to hear him say "oh, that happened to you too?" Seems that he had another 914 that had the same exact problem just a few years earlier!

Wayne Dempsey grew up on Long Island, NY, went to MIT, studied engineering, and received a BS and MS in engineering. Wayne then went to work in California for Hughes Space and Communications in the satellite payload department for the Government Electronics Business Unit. During that time he started a Porsche Parts company (PelicanParts.com) out of his garage. Wayne has written a few books on Porsche upgrades and 911 engine rebuilding. ... and

out of the corner of my eye saw my rear wheel rolling across four lanes of traffic! ...

WD: When I was in grad school , my girlfriend's dad had one we used to drive it all around Poughkeepsie, NY. It was a rust bucket, but fun to drive - if you happened to look down, you could see the road beneath you through the rust holes! When I moved to California and even before I had a place to live, I ended up buying a 914. It had a 1.8L engine, although at the time I didn't really know anything and thought it was a 2.0L (this despite taking it into a Porsche dealership for a PPI where they told me it was a 2.0L) It didn't matter much anyway, as I ended up dropping a 200HP 2.7L in it. That 2.7L engine actually became the donor engine for the engine rebuild book. When given lemons...

MH: Wayne, the fact that you took a chance on a new business built entirely around folks who want the best for their P-cars is great. To actually author some of the best books on the subject puts you in a league all your own. I understand that your first Porsche experience was in a 914.

Max Holloway Working on “His 911’s” Airbox Curtesy of Wayne’s ‘101 Projects Projects for Your Porsche 911’ MH: I read both your books; 101 Projects for your Porsche 911 and How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines. I have to say, not only are they really easy to follow, but the detail you provide is great. I got the sense that as long as I was able to understand how to use some basic tools, took my time and followed your instructions; I could actually do a lot of the work myself.

WD: The engine book was something that I thought was needed for the Porsche community. Modeled after Tom Wilson's VW engine book, I made sure that it was published in color, and also had a performance (eye candy) section. I put about 1500 hours into it with 4500 photos. I'm proud of both books. MH: What's next? WD: I'm working on a BMW 101 Projects Book, which is taking longer than I would like. My wife and I have an 8 month old and he keeps distracting me! Wayne’s Books Can Be Found In Many Porsche Garages 10

MH: Good luck with the book and the little guy. It will be awhile till he has a wrench in his hand.

MSR Driver Education - February 2005 by Zack Napier In Green, you are assigned an instructor who is with you at all times while on the track, which amounts to four 25-minute sessions. He teaches a line to take your car through for each of the turns and straight ways, affectionately known as the “Company Line.” A driver cannot graduate to the Blue run group until mastery of this line is obtained. Safety is first and foremost, you must do as the instructor says or you must leave the premises. You can pass only on the straight ways and only if the car in front of you waves you on. I felt completely safe the entire weekend last year despite the rain and slick conditions.

Attending a Driver Education (DE) weekend is the most fun a fanatical car guy or gal can have, at least until he or she can actually race a car. I have come to believe this now after completing my second DE weekend. My first was the February 2004 MotorSport Ranch (MSR) event. That event was marred with rain throughout most of the weekend. The track was slick, making everyone nervous. Many of the participants left early or didn’t show at all, having come to know that a wet MSR isn’t nearly as much fun as a dry one. Despite the rain, I still had a great time meeting many fellow Porschephiles, checking out all kinds of cool cars on display, as well as learning to drive on a racetrack. I left with a valuable lesson that made me a much better driver. Ever since then I’ve thought water = ice on the road while driving in the rain. I consider all of those pickup trucks drivers that pass me doing 75 in the rain very dangerous, providing as wide a berth as possible.

The RGT RS is one car that doesn’t need numbers to identify itself. We began the day with a brief meeting of all drivers to discuss the basic rules of the track, followed by a Green run group meeting for the beginners. Finally, it was time to head to the track. I was pumped; I couldn’t get there soon enough. I met my instructor in the staging area, none other than Rocky Johnson, our esteemed Maverick President. This was truly my lucky day. Finally, after a year of anticipation it was time to take my car to the track. Just as I pulled onto the track the first raindrop hit my windshield. There was no way the weatherman could let me down now, it was sure to go away. But by the third lap it was coming down pretty hard, and would not let up the rest of the day. Depression quickly set in. How could this happen again, I so badly wanted to run on a dry track.

The cone orange Ruf RGT RS drew admirers from the early morning crowd. I was very excited when I finally could attend my second DE after a year-long drought. I watched the weather very closely the week leading up to the event. By Thursday the weatherman was convinced the weekend would be cloudy, but with no rain. Hallelujah! I spent much of the day on Friday preparing for the weekend, checking the tire pressure, putting the bra and mirror covers on, taping the wheel wells to prevent rock chips and packing all kinds of neat stuff for the track. I left early Saturday morning to get a good parking spot at the track.

Despite the rain, the day was a lot of fun. I saw Bob and Brian, who ran with me in Green the year before. They had already moved on to the Yellow group (one beyond Blue, driving without any instruction). I had a great time talking to them about what they had done to their cars over the past 12 months. I was assigned to the Green run group again, the beginner group. There are five run groups you can be assigned to, based upon your level of expertise. You “graduate” to the next highest run group when your instructor believes you are ready.

group was also a hoot, as always. I hope to be driving in Yellow with them this time next year. Ruf Auto Centre sponsored the event bringing Alois Ruf and some of the Ruf racers drivers over from Germany. I couldn’t help myself from buying a Ruf hat and having Alois sign it for me. We are so fortunate to have them in the Maverick Region; a thousand thanks go out to them for sponsoring such a wonderful event.

Alois Ruf signed merchandise and posed with Mavericks like Shelly Burbank. Back on the track, Rocky kept my spirits up. He kept me on the Company Line throughout the day, while it seemed most others were drifting all over the track, I guess looking for additional traction on different places. Rocky believed it best that I focus on and learn the line, traveling a little slower due to the slicker conditions. It was a little hair-raising seeing a few doors of cars in front of me taking a wide arch through a turn while I cut the corner off, but I was never concerned about safety. As a matter of fact, there was only one case all day that a car spun on the track in the Green group. All in all, I had a wonderful time Saturday, and couldn’t wait for Sunday, bring on the rain, if need be!

The sun came out for Barry Moore and Eric Erz’s last run of the day. I know I was utilizing merely a fraction of the car’s abilities. The resulting adrenaline rush was awesome, causing me to shake after each run. I was finally driving my baby the way it was meant to be driven. After every run, I would meet up with the other drivers, each with a huge smile on their face. We would talk about the line, how hard we were braking into each turn, which turns gave us the most difficulty, and which turns we thought we had mastered. This was fun.

Dennis Frick and Wayne Corley drove two of the many Boxsters on hand. The pinnacle of the weekend came when Rocky was kind enough to take me on the track with his 968 club racer. It gave me a taste of what’s to come if I can keep it up. After squeezing my 6’2”, 225 lbs frame into a slightly oversized baby seat, I held on tight and we were off. He threw that car around the track with incredible grace. Although I know my car has nearly double the horsepower, I instantly knew that he would pass me like I was sitting still given the better suspension and far superior driving skills. I’ve gotta learn more!

Sunday started with fog in the morning that delayed the start, but at least it had stopped raining overnight. By the time the Greens were first on the track, it was pretty dry. By the second run, it was totally dry. I couldn’t believe my lucky stars. Finally, I was going to experience what it was like to actually push my car to my limits, which I know is far below the car’s limits at this point. Let the fun begin.

I was elated driving home Sunday night. I cornered my poor wife at home, talking a mile a minute about the fun I had.Yup, I got the bug. The Maverick DE guys and gals do an incredible job with these weekends. The instructors are awesome, and the people are great. I place full responsibility on them for this new, self-diagnosed disease. Now, all I need to do is buy a new set of wheels and racing slicks and I will be completely satisfied, well maybe stiffen the springs just a bit, then I will be totally satisfied, well then I would like…(I know if Randall at Park Place is reading this, he’s got a big smile on his face). My final wish is that my newfound friends from this Green group will run with me in the Yellow group in the February 2006 DE.

Rocky’s strategy of keeping to the Company Line through the rain on Saturday instantly paid dividends. I had the line down cold and my confidence grew with every lap. Each time I came to a turn I tried to push myself a bit more than the last time, traffic allowing. My 996 Targa was soon devouring Boxsters and older 911’s. Rocky and I started hoopin’ and hollerin’ as we went around the track. My tires started squealing as I pushed the car harder every chance I could. The amazing thing is that although I was pushing myself to edge of my abilities,

Get Your Kicks on Route ??? By Chris Kellner

Mother Nature cooperated with a wonderful day, albeit windy, as we departed the Wal-Mart lot on Hwy 80 just off the 635/I-20 loop at 8:30 AM sharp for our first Ladies’ Driving Day adventure. Congratulations to all the ladies who drove. We had a total of 18 Porsches; 5- Boxsters, 12- 911s in various configurations (I know, I know; 996, 964, and so on, yet in my heart always 911s) and a 944S.

We had to stop to eat, right? I mean, gosh, driving is an appetitebuilding activity and, once again, our Tour Meister, Ted Glover, and Tour Chair, Andy Miller, found us a great place to stop for lunch at the Eagle’s Bluff Country Club and Resort on Lake Palestine, a beautiful planned community just South of Tyler. The food was great and the view was gorgeous. Lunch was served on the patio of the clubhouse, styled after a French Country house, where we watched folks hitting those little white balls. Several of our group took a spin out to look at the custom homes around the lake and were quite impressed. With that happy tummy feeling, we were off again for the return trip back to the DFW area. The roads we took had even more twisties and short straights. I really don’t know how our fearless leaders find these little black ribbon jewels with the yellow and white stripes running down the middle of them, but they sure have a knack for it.

The tour took us through lots of little towns and “most” of the locals along the way were to say, at the least, Porsche friendly. We, once again, experienced the handling that our cars are famous for and were able to experience“Spirited Driving” in a most wonderful Porsche way… Get your next kicks on Route??? with our Porsche club tours, The next Sunday Day trip will be on May 13th. Never leave an empty parking lot lying around or we might just take it over!

My personal favorite on this trip (I always find a car that becomes my personal favorite) was an ’89 Carrera with a really neat whale tail owned by Pat Benson. She drives her car every day for work, as well as autocrosses and, as I recall, DE’s it on the track, too. Judy and I remember well one of our business trips to Germany in the late 80’s, when we rented a car just like Pat’s that we drove the heck out of on the Autobahn. We couldn’t resist taking it to and doing laps around the old Nurburgring. I also admired the 1980 911SC driven by Jerry and Jaclyn that had a speedometer that only went up to 85 mph. Something to do with Federal Regulations back in the 80’s; I guess the idea was to somehow keep us from driving over 55 and if the needle said max 85mph that was gonna somehow keep us going slower than, um…how fast were we really going???

If a parking lot isn’t available we’ll settle for a nice stretch of highway. 16

here the heck were we…We went through Wills Point, Edom, New Bethlehem, Moore Station, Poynor and Chandler… on our delightful day tour through the beautiful piney woods and lake areas of East Texas. None of these towns sound familiar? Well, they really do exist in East Texas, not far off the main interstate highways.

I Do Have A Need For Speed - AX102 & TT103 By Tracey Gross

W

e ordered our Boxster in February of last year, and before we took delivery, my husband, Ed, and I joined the PCA. We started attending the MRPCA Happy Hours and began getting acquainted with everyone. Many times I was asked if I was interested in doing a DE, a Time Trial or an Autocross. Every time my answer was, “No, I’ll leave that to Ed…. I don’t have a need for speed.”

It was a nice time to relax and get acquainted with people. Then bright and early the next morning, it was the Time Trial School! For this day, Ed and I were assigned “Professor” Jan Mayo. We spent the morning practicing at two different stations, and mastering these exercises was quite a challenge! I developed my need for speed on the straightaways, but had a tough time learning the precise time to hit the brakes at the brake markers. I was always just a tad early or a bit late. I always thought that I was “making the cone a hood ornament” (like Jan had instructed), but learned that I was actually turning a good 10 feet in front of it! But I did have a couple of opportunities to learn how to handle a spin out!

Next up was this past weekend’s Autocross and Time Trial Schools in Mineral Wells. I’m not a morning person, so you can imagine the thrill of waking up before the crack of dawn on Saturday morning and traveling 2 hours to get to Mineral Wells. But once I was there, the excitement began! ... don’t worry, brakes and tires can be replaced. ... Ed and I were assigned “Professor” Mark Steele for Saturday’s Autocross School. He was very patient with me, and did a wonderful job of explaining the various morning exercises and in teaching me how to push the car to its potential. Although the Skid Pad exercise made me a bit dizzy, I did learn how to throttle steer. The egg pad was next, and it was pretty cool. Although the apex turns were a bit challenging, I enjoyed the combination of speed and cornering. Next was the Chicane. I think this was my favorite part of the school. Although I never quite let it “open up” around the apex as Mark wanted me to, it was fun nonetheless. And finally we went to the slalom station. Naturally my favorite was the regular spaced, but I did learn to smooth my way through each of the three courses.

Imagine my surprise, though, when I decided to take the Ladies Only Autocross School in February. Many people had explained it as a great opportunity to learn how the car handles, what it’s capable of, etc., so I decided to give it a try. I hedged a little bit the night before, telling Ed that “I didn’t want to damage the car”, but he said “don’t worry, brakes and tires can be replaced.” I found myself thoroughly enjoying the experience, and slowly the addiction began.

Marc Thaler was encouraged to explore the limits . . . and he found them! The first one wasn’t too fun, but Jan gave me precise instructions on how to handle it, so when the next one came I was prepared. It wasn’t something I want to do very often, but at least now I know how to handle the car. Jan and I had a blast together; she’s a lot of fun and was very informative about how to handle a Boxster. I guess it helps that a Boxster is one of the many in their Porsche collection! The afternoon was spent taking our practice runs, then our actual timed runs around the course. I had such a great time. By the end of the day I felt very comfortable behind the wheel. Once again we took our corners so the volunteers could do their fun runs. It was only now that the weather started misting on us; other than that we had been blessed with mild weather the entire weekend!

I’m so glad that I was able to participate in these schools. And now I’ll have an opportunity to use the skills I learned as I start attending the various Autocrosses and Time Trials offered during the year. I guess I’ve discovered that I really do have a need for speed!

All in all, it was a great day. After the final “school” events were over, it was time for the students to work the corners so that the volunteers could take their fun laps. This gave us an opportunity to learn how to call in cone penalties, and to use the flags. And this was really entertaining to watch, as most of these folks are masters of these events. You can really learn the right way to approach each station by watching their moves. When our fun at the track was over, it was time to check in at the hotel for a short rest before meeting up for dinner. We had 24 people come to the Baris Italian Restaurant for dinner and it was scrumptious. 18

Halftime for My Carrera by Ed Hughes We put the ATV jack up under the motor and just brought it snug against the bottom of the headers. I then unbolted the rear swaybar, the two transmission mount bolts and the two motor mount bolts. I used an impact wrench on the mounts as they were in tight. Slowly I lowered the front of the car with a floor jack which raised the rear up away from the motor which rested on the ATV jack. The key here was starting out with a level motor.

M

y ’84 Targa now has just over 120,000 miles. The clutch had a bit of chatter which has progressed the last couple of DE’s. After reading about some performance rebuilds, and actually driving a 3.5L Carrera, I was talking myself into dropping the motor for the clutch, and attempting a rebuild with some performance enhancements. I came to my senses, and decided there are better things to spend my money on. The car really runs well, and uses little oil, mainly via a couple of leaks. When you look at how many 911’s get 200K or more miles, I figured it is “halftime.”

Never having dropped a 911 motor, I was a little intimidated. But there is a lot of information in the Porsche community: online information, books, and some of the people I’ve met through PCA. I decided to drop the motor with the transmission to save some potential grief when it goes back in, and invested in a Sears ATV jack, which was the smartest thing I did in preparation for this task.

So, after reading up on all of the “while you’re in there” chores, I decided I was ready for the engine drop. The plan is to spend a few weeks R&R’ing the externals of the motor (sender seals, hoses, etc), new clutch/flywheel, rebuild the alternator and starter, and general sprucing up.

Ed’s 911 Engine - Ready for Upgrades

Our own Bill Miller suggested a way to go about the drop, which I followed and was pleased with. The idea is to get the entire car up high. I measured 24” clear under the rear torsion bar covers. It took 6 ton jackstands on 2” X 12”’s to get this height. The front was supported on my smaller stands, but the car was basically level.

After lowering it a bit, I was able to pull the motor back, thereby freeing the shifter shaft and allowing the transmission to come down. It was a simple process of repeating lowering a few inches; pull back a couple of inches. Soon, the motor was finally down far enough to roll back. It seems to me that the ATV jack is so much more stable than if one were to try and balance the assembly on a floor jack.

I then used the checklist from a technical article on engine removal found on the Pelican Parts website to prepare the motor to come out. I spent about 2 hours on Friday night unbolting CV joints, unhooking electrical, removing the muffler, A/C lines and compressor (it’s coming out!) as well as the heater ducting. I then spent about 1 _ hours early Saturday morning unhooking the clutch, fuel lines, breather hoses, shift coupler and wires to the starter.

Ed Hughes Filling the Void!

The “Drop” 22

From here, it was simply removing the 4 nuts holding the tranny to the motor, mounting the engine stand yoke (I’m using the special Porsche part which was found on Ebay) on the motor, and then lifting the engine up onto the engine stand. There it sits waiting for me to jump into the list of tasks I’ve worked up. I hope to have the motor back up in 4-6 weeks, ready to try out at the May DE @ MSR.
