The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, the Maverick Region President

R

ecently the board was chided for not making it easier for people, particularly new members, to know what positions might be available or how to go about volunteering. The initial reaction to that charge was generally one of skepticism. After giving it more thought, I decided there might be merit to the idea after all. Thinking back to my early days, I can understand how it might be a bit intimidating to get involved. Most of us are guilty of tossing out acronyms we take for granted that everyone understands. For example, someone might say we're running MSR counterclockwise at the next DE; the car was progressed from F stock to E prepared when they put on Big Reds; I had TTD at the last AX; the R compounds bumped me up a class; we're having a tulip rally, etc. MSR, Big Reds, TTD, R compounds, are all terms we know and love. But what about the new folks or the member who finally decided to venture out to a Happy Hour after reading about them in Slipstream for a couple of years? It was also pointed out that our listing of Board, Officers

and Chairs in Slipstream doesn't always clear up confusion about who does what. Traditionally, when someone steps down from a position, it has been their responsibility to recruit their replacement. This usually means the recruit has been active in that area of the club for which they are being recruited. As an example, Bill Miller and Chuck Machala recruited Brian Petri and Bryan Bell to chair Autocross and Time Trials. Both had been active and we expect the events will run as smoothly as ever. Does this mean we overlooked someone with great credentials that we didn't know about? Could be! This could be the case in any number of areas. It's a dilemma for which I don't claim to have an answer. We do know that the vast majority of Maverick members never become active in the club and in fact many don't bother to renew their PCA membership. Obviously, I'm biased; I love the club and have a great time at a wide variety of our events. My question to all of you is how do we get our members involved? Everyone on the board is interested in the answer to that question. Give us a call, drop us an email, and share your thoughts.

Maverick Minutes by Jan Mayo

M

arch 7 board meeting found the food ready early so everyone had eaten and was ready to start the meeting 5 minutes early. Rocky started off saying he resented my implication that he was shirking his duty in missing the Feb board meeting because he was on a four week ski trip in Colorado. He was only gone three and a half weeks. I apologized and said I only commented such because my feelings were hurt at the entire board not being invited to join the ski trip. We were both grinning. We quickly moved on to Lanean Hughes' report on the status of the new home for Hope, Inc. There will be a weekend where they will need volunteer help to install insulation. Lanean will be calling. Once that is done there will be another weekend where the interior paint job will need some volunteers and again you will see her posts to the Mav Yahoo list. Please watch as they are looking forward to a July 1 move in date. Lanean continued with information on Porscheplatz, May 11-13, during the Lone Star Grand Prix -American LeMans race at Reliant Park in Houston. There will be a Porsche parking corral, scheduled appearances by Porsche drivers, and a PCA tent with membership info. and a raffle for someone to win a spot as a pit crew member. She needs around 30 people to volunteer to work a time spot in the hospitality tent. Lanean had one more thing to say on behalf of Bryan Henderson, Zone 5 Representative. Part of the Portland Parade competition will be a Zone Challenge, in which Bryan wants some Mavericks to participate. Wendy Shoffit's report on the two Autocross School weekends started as a weather report. The first weekend was freezing rain, sleet and snow and the second weekend was sunny and mid 70's. Both weekends' events were held successfully in spite of the weather. There were 92 total students and with *most* of the expenses accounted for expects to see ~$200 in surplus. She suggests we consider raising the price as it is only $5 more than the regular event price and we supply a t-shirt for the two day entrants, lunches, PLUS a full day of personalized instruction. Wendy has talked with Lisa Steele about taking over the school part of Wendy's many Maverick jobs and Lisa is considering it. (Hey Lisa, they're just like a bunch of really tall second graders! You can handle it.) Wendy moved on with her report on Slipstream. The March issue was delivered to Tri-Win on Feb 28. By the 7th no one had received their issue yet. We are probably going to return to using the Fort Worth bulk mail delivery instead of the Dallas distribution site as we never had these delays before moving to Dallas. There will be a $35 delivery charge from Tri-Win but if it eliminates the delays it will be worth it. Wendy had her normal "needs" list of articles yet to be received and also discussed Kevin Hardison's suggestion that the next issue have a color cover. She discussed the additional cost, there was a motion and a second and the board agreed to the additional cost. Jan Mayo gave some additional information on the cost and quality issue of buying new loaner helmets for the Truckster and requested $600 +/- tax for the purchase from advertiser Bobby Archer. The request was moved, seconded and passed. Teri Davis said that everyone that showed up for the rally school had a good time in spite of the heavy rain. Reservations for her next rally are already coming in. Last month Teri had reported that there would be a Porsche Driving Experience at Portland Parade but now it will not be happening after all. 8

Charlie Davis got a resounding response to his request for recognition for Kevin Hardison and the autocross committee’s work on the Autocross Schools. The room was filled with giant hurrahs and a final huge Rah Rah.... even though Kevin wasn't there to hear it. He did show up a bit later and we did a repeat performance. Charlie continued with the list of things he has accomplished on the Truckster reporting that it does run better now. He has ~25 people that have classified their cars and has found a small glitch in the system. It has been or will be fixed. Joel Nannis said the National Membership web site has been down and he's not sure when he will get updated information. Many of you have seen Joel driving Jellybean, the 1975 911 that belonged to Bob Ande. After Bob's death Joel bought the 911 and has been helping Bob's sister Judy with many of Bob's things including what to do with the Econoline van. With Judy's blessings the van will be donated to the Hope Shelter. The Ed and Tracey Gross duo have started working on May at Mayo's for May 20. They are looking into group tickets (not box) for a Ranger game in June and maybe a Murder Mystery dinner evening in July when it's too hot to be outside. The Goodie Store is going to ask for payment prior to making special orders. Brian Petri said Autocross #1 at TMS would be the weekend before the NASCAR race and he suspects there might be some RV traffic that we'll have to deal with. Lanean assures him that her source at TMS says RV's will not be allowed to enter the track till Sunday evening. DE Registrar Michael Wingfield said the February DE at MSR had 220 entrants and 212 actually showed up even with the rain. The April event has 60 registrants so far. Marie Wingfield started some discussion on how anyone knows when there is an open Chair spot and suggests that we advertise when there are openings. She also was concerned that the titles were not very descriptive on the Board, Officers and Chairs page of Slipstream. DE Chair Bill Dawson was very pleased with the February DE turn out and the way the event was run even with the deluge of rain. He was pleased that a number of people used the rain as a learning instrument. Albert Sansores asked if the long MSR track will be run clockwise. Bill thought probably not as, at this time, there were some safety concerns with that direction. Albert wanted to know if we'd run the short course any more and again Bill responded that we would only if we do not fill registration. Our cost will still be less than other venues. Treasurer Jeff Atkins is on top of the tax status with Bob Knight but we will need to publish a 2005 P & L in Slipstream. He thinks he has budgets from everyone. Jeff still has some reservations on the notification and access processes with PayPal but these are being addressed. We have now gone around the table and are back to Rocky where he's still nursing a slight snow-sun burn on his nose. He has the paperwork for the PCA National awards and would like anyone to speak up with nominations. Kevin Hardison appears with his normal timeliness and we repeated the applause !! Applause!!! for his work on the Autocross schools. Lanean takes the floor again thinking it would be nice if folks sent a Thank You note to the businesses that sponsor events. Wendy reiterated to remember our sponsors not only with Thank You's when you visit them or see them at an event, but to also support them with purchases. No more repeats so we are done.

From The Driver’s Seat by Wendy Shoffit, Slipstream Managing Editor

W

hat a month we’ve had! I have never experienced a colder autocross school event as we had February 18-19. That Sunday, while standing outside waving my little red flag, I had snow coming down on my head. Before the event, I fielded tons of emails asking me if we were cancelling. “No way,” I said, “there’s too much to learn by driving in bad conditions.” The only way we would cancel is if it were truly too treacherous to drive TO the site. Despite later reports of multiple car accidents, the roads I traveled on weren’t all that bad. While there were a few no-shows and cancellations, the majority of the students did show up and had an absolute blast! See Cathy Howard’s article if you don’t believe me. The Mineral Wells schools on March 4-5 fortunately had much better weather to contend with. Sunshine and warm temperatures made us all much happier. Next time... sunscreen! Many kudos to the other members of the AX/TT schools committee: Chair, Tom Snodgrass; AX Chair, Brian Petri; TT Chair, Bryan Bell; School Guru, Kevin Hardison, Ed and Tracey Gross, Jan Mayo. We worked very well as a team and have had no complaints about the events. Further thanks go to all the volunteers who came out despite the weather conditions to either wave flags while working corners or chance car sickness while instructing on the skidpads. The school series was a grand success. I hope our new students come out to a regularly scheduled AX or TT event. Your

education can and will continue with more and more seat time. Speaking of the AX/TT series, I wanted to say a little about the new classing structure. While I don’t personally understand it completely (haven’t really taken the time to learn it), I’m not too terribly worried about it. I hope you’re not, either. I know once the car gets classed and I decide if I’m running in the open or ladies class, it’s done. I also know that James, Charlie, Bryan, Lisa, and Brian will do their best to answer any questions that you can come up with and will help you class your Porsche. All you really have to do is come out, spend a few minutes with one of these people and then you’re done. Don’t let a little confusion keep you from having a LOT of fun driving your car! Now, on to a little more serious topic. I would like to ask for help working on Slipstream on a regular basis. I’m not looking for a replacement editor or anything... just some help for the time being. Someone who would like to learn about how this newsletter gets put together. Someone willing to put in some time and energy learning the ropes. This person might be willing in the future to become the managing editor. For the time being, it could be putting together a few pages here and there, tracking down articles, or various other helpful opportunities. Computer experience is very beneficial, but more importantly, passion for the marque and the club is most necessary. Let me teach you how to enjoy the view from this driver’s seat.

PCA Club Racing 2006 Update by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region Club Racer orsche Club of America club racing has been around for over 10 years now. I’m not going to go into a lot of background for those who are not familiar with it. You can get the answers at www.pca.org/clubrace. There you’ll find everything you need to know about what PCA club racing is, how to get started, the schedule of races, pictures and timed results going back 8 years. PCA club racing is wheel-to-wheel amateur (not professional- no money, etc.) racing specifically designed for Porsche cars. Their motto is that there is a race classification for every Porsche ever made. The classifications are based on weight to horsepower ratios along with other factors such as kind of tires and whether the car was originally a street car or a Porsche built factory racer, and how much a stock car has been modified from original specs. The club-racing rulebook goes into much detail on this.

1000 registered club racers in PCA. In Maverick, we created an ongoing local award last year called the 5/5/500. It was given to Maverick club racers who had 5 podium finishes, in at least 5 different races within 500 miles of any point inside the Maverick Region’s geography. Let me also explain that a race weekend might have 2-3 individual races, which can be sprint races lasting 30 minutes, and Enduros lasting 90 minutes including refueling. The race weekends that qualified last year, as they will this year include Texas World Speedway in College Station, Heartland Park in Topeka Kansas, MotorSport Ranch in Cresson Texas, Hallett Motor Speedway in Oklahoma, and No-Problem Raceway near New Orleans. For those who want to tow a little further, Pueblo Colorado and Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama are 12 hour drives. The first race of the season down here, Texas World Speedway is history; it was in March. The rest are coming up fast.

The other big factor in PCA club racing is the idea that we should race every weekend and not destroy our cars just because we might be aggressive without the skill to manage it. There is a rule known as the “13/13” rule to assign blame and probation when there are on-track incidents resulting in contact or damage. The races take place at venues throughout North America. There are 27 races this year throughout the country at the most famous racetracks you know (Sebring, Daytona, Road America- the list goes on).

Many of us will be in Heartland Park at the end of April, and all of us will be at our home club race at Motorsport Ranch during the Memorial Day Weekend. We will be racing on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. We will also be holding a solo-only DE that weekend. For more information on the club race and DE, please look here in Slipstream and on the Maverick Region website www.mavpca.org. We would love to see you at the Memorial Day event if not as a participant, then as a volunteer worker. Corner workers (you will be trained) have the best viewing seat in the place. We’re looking forward to seeing you on Memorial Day!

Neither Snow, Nor Rain... by Phil Hallenbeck the MSR track was virtually buried under mud and water by the Saturday storm. Even the diligent efforts of the MotorSport Ranch crew with bucket loader and sweeper were simply overwhelmed.

W

ell, okay, we exaggerate a bit. Only rain greeted the Mavericks upon their February 25th return to MotorSport Ranch—but to many warm-blooded Texans it felt cold enough for the white stuff. And it was a rain to remember, as it was clear a Higher Authority had decided North Texas needed rain more than the Mavericks needed a dry track. A true deluge soaked early-arriving Porschephiles on Saturday, accompanied by awe-inspiring lightning.

Sunday Sunday, however, was a different story. Sunday chapel attendees witnessed a glorious sunrise under crystal-clear skies, with crisp dry air. Only a few traces of dampness in Little Bend served as a reminder of Saturday’s deluge. The long-suffering corner workers under Joe McGlohen, drenched all day Saturday, found their endurance rewarded by dry conditions and sunshine on Sunday.

True to form, however, Porsche enthusiasts were not easily deterred, as full run groups set out Saturday morning on a track surface slippery enough to be described by many terms— “slick,” “icy,” and “greasy” being among the printable ones heard. It was obvious, however, that DE Chair Bill Dawson’s briefing was taken to heart, as very few cars went off the track despite a surface which sent over 50 cars off-track a year ago during similar conditions in February 2005.

To nobody’s surprise, initial run groups found a cold track and ran on cold tires, keeping speeds down for the first session—only. Our instructors “proofed” the Long Course to begin the second run session, which proved to be the harbinger of a wonderful morning and afternoon.

The drivers gained experience as the day wore on, and Agricultural Excursions remained few in number even as the rain continued to pour down. The newer drivers all found the Rain Line—some as part of their goals for the weekend, most because the “traditional” line was under several inches of water on some turns. According to some, the body of water in Little Bend became Lake Granbury, and Big Bend became home to Lake LBJ—and indeed, by mid-afternoon both seemed only a bit too small for boating and fishing.

As the Mavericks became the first group to run the Ranch’s extension, they were again challenged by track conditions—this time the dried remains of Saturday’s mudslides, which despite the best sweeping efforts of the Ranch Hands completely coated some sections of the Long Course. Fortunately, Bill’s morning briefing which counseled early caution was heeded by almost all, and only an unfortunate few coated their precious machines in red Texas mud! The first few runs cleared the line, and speeds and spirits rose wonderfully as the day wore on. Noon charity laps again profited young Abby as the Mavericks took a break from their ongoing (and now nearly completed) project to build a shelter for abused women and children. Again, the Ruf team led the way in the charity laps, showing the truly unforgettable panorama of three RUF creations leading the parade!

The traditional charity laps at noon took on a heightened importance, as proceeds went to May Clinic treatment for young Abby Schultz, 3. Abby, the cousin of MotorSport Ranch’s Curt Routson, suffers from Congenital Fiber Type Disproportion, a very rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. Although founder Alois Ruf was unable to attend the DE, the Mavericks make a big tip o’ the hat to Ruf Auto Centre for their invaluable sponsorship support to a wonderful event! The “Personal Trainer for Porsches” showed us yet again why the name Ruf is synonymous with extreme performance— worldwide.

David Gross of Hill Country Region warmed hearts by giving us another great event to look forward to with the March Club Race and DE at Texas World Speedway, and Lanean reminded us that there is another great DE season ahead at the Ranch, continuing April 8 and 9. TO BE CONTINUED…BY ALL THE MAVERICKS AND THEIR FAST FRIENDS! See you at the track!

Snow and Ice? Who Cares? By Cathy Howard

I

Saturday I was scared because I was driving my dad’s ’96 blue Miata. Since I don’t drive it normally I was afraid of messing the car up some how. My amazing instructor, Betty Perrine, came out in the horrible weather just for me. (Thank you, Betty! I really appreciate it!!) She was very helpful to a first timer like me. She showed me that hitting a cone and pushing the car was not going to hurt it. We started out with the braking exercises; I only locked up the brakes once that day. After that we worked on the skid pad, which I fell in love with! I could have done it all day, but since I couldn’t, I did it as much as possible. This was for sure my favorite thing to do. The first time Betty did the skid pad I got so dizzy I thought I wasn’t going to be able to do it. I knew I had to, so I took it slow the first couple times and then didn’t want to stop. We moved on to the slalom. I wasn’t a big fan of it, but it was still fun. The increasing was my favorite, followed by the evenly spaced, and then the decreasing. I had the most trouble with the decreasing, and it was also where I hit my first cone dead on. After our lunch from Jason’s Deli we started the autocross. Betty and I only walked the course once due to the weather. When I got into the driver’s seat I spun out for the first time ever in my life. It was a new feeling, but with all the practice I had done in the morning I knew it

’ve had my license for six months and my parents encouraged me to do the Ladies/Teen Autocross and the Autocross 101 schools. At first I wasn’t too excited to do the schools because I don’t like driving and the weather was horrible. It never got above freezing the entire weekend. It was snowing and sleeting off and on the entire time.

Cathy Howard on a autocross run without Mitch “weighing” her down. was safe, my parents didn’t get to see it, but I got applauded by a ton of people who did. I’m normally an overcautious driver, but as soon as I could recognize the feeling of the back end coming around, I was addicted. Sunday I got a different instructor, Mitch Williams, who is more experienced with Miatas and taught me more about the car and its power. He also pushed me to go faster and not to listen to my “safety self” as he called it. It was hard to go faster, but I tried. The weather was still miserable, probably even worse because it had time to set in over night. In the morning I was in the second group so I started out with the slalom. The night before I told my parents that I didn’t want to go alone, just because I think that it would feel awkward not having someone telling me what to do, but after Mitch got done instructing his other student he talked me into going alone for the first time. Wow, did it feel different not having the extra weight and having to think for myself. After I did my first run Mitch got in the car and asked,“Do you want me to stay or get out?” I responded,“Get out!” I actually felt more comfortable going alone, even though I thought I wouldn’t. Moving on to the braking I did a lot better, I locked it up many times and other times I made a pretty good stop, with out locking it up. I was pretty proud of myself! Then I got to do the skid pad again. I was told many times that I was doing well, especially for just driving six months. After lunch we did the autocross, which was the same course from the day before. I lowered my time, spun out three times, and DNF’ed again.

After doing these schools I feel more confident in my driving skills. I am actually kind of glad that the weather was how it was because I learned how to do all this in bad road conditions meaning that when it’s a nice day things will be easier. I have to send out a HUGE thanks to all the workers that stood out there in the cold for hours both days, if it wasn’t for all of you I never would have gotten this experience and learned so many things. I also want to send another HUGE thanks to my wonderful instructors for taking time out of their lives to help me.

Students lining up for their Autocross laps . . . ...Chuck Machala was eager to get out of the biting cold! 20

I am going to do a few autocrosses just because I finally understand what my mom means when she says it gets in your blood. I have a hard time resisting the urge to make the back end come out around when I go around a corner or a curve in my dad’s Miata, or even in my Saturn sometimes! Thank you to everyone who put the schools together! I really appreciate it!!

Hope Shelter Report . . . . . . It’s Almost Finished! By Lanean Hughes

B

y the time y’all read this, the insulation will have been put in place. Several wonderful volunteers “toured” to Mineral Wells on March 25, to complete the insulation installation. The next step will be doing the ceiling and sheet rock. Fortunately, the Hope board has secured contractors to complete these projects. After that, we will be ready to start the interior painting. If you are interested in throwing on those “paint clothes,” please let us know and we will contact you when the date is set. I’d like to have a list of volunteers willing to help us finish the project to have the shelter ready for move in by July 1, 2006. As stated in my previous article, we are also still taking cash donations to purchase paint, ceiling fans, and various other items needed. Let us know what you might have for donations. Please send me an e-mail to get on the volunteer list to assist us is finalizing the new Hope Shelter. The Best Value in Driver Training By Micky Ray

The weekend was advertised as the best value in driver training, and in my opinion that was an understatement. For only $70 (I can’t even change my oil for $70) we got two days of individual instructor-led driving training and a lot of seat time, not to mention donuts in the morning and deli sandwiches at lunch. The amount of work put forth by the organizers and instructors was amazing, and resulted in a smooth running, fun weekend for all.

W

hat is a late apex? How do you throttle steer a 911? What is trail braking? Is the line for a front engine car (e.g. 944) different from the line for a rear engine car (e.g. 911)? Prior to the Autocross/Time Trial school weekend I could not have answered these or a slew of other questions about high performance driving.

The “pink ladies” took on an honorary member... being the first group to work affords the opportunity to watch the other cars and get a feel for what line works and what line does not, providing a distinct advantage at least for the section of the track that the worker can see (plus we got to see a BMW 330 spin 3 times and punt a cone 30 yards).

Sunday, Autocross Sunday was Autocross 102. This time the field was divided into three sections for the morning training, each covering different autocross challenges like slalom, skid pad, chicane, etc. Groups of about 10 cars trained on each section, spending about an hour on each part. Skid pads were something new to me, and learning to steer the car with only throttle input was a real thrill. I have a tendency to just push my front tires through turns, and my instructor spent a lot of time teaching me to steer the car with a combination of throttle as well as steering inputs, and consequently carry more speed (as well as preserve my front tires). The slalom section was also very interesting learning how to enter and exit slaloms with constant, decreasing, or increasing spacing without unsettling the car too much.

Michael Fricke putting the car through its paces. Saturday, Time Trial Saturday was Time Trial 103. For the morning the field was divided into two sections, each running a different half of the normal time trial course. The class was divided into two groups, each running on a different section. One section emphasized coming from a late apex sweeper into a high-speed straight, followed by a relatively sharp hairpin. This section emphasized hitting the apex correctly in order to carry as much speed as possible into the straight as well as threshold braking in order to bleed off speed at the last possible moment before going into the turn. An interesting lesson for me was that my 1985 Carrera’s brakes far exceed the capabilities of my tires (great, now I need sticky tires).

After the morning training sessions we broke for a quick lunch (included in the price for the weekend!) while the course workers combined the two training sections into the full Time Trial course. The afternoon was spent again split up into two groups, however one group worked corners while the other drove. While nobody looks forward to working corners, we learned that 24

The other section of the morning concentrated on a more “curvy” section of the track, including the timing gate and the track entry point. Having autocrossed before, I found these parts of the course difficult to navigate due to the density of cones and the speed of the course, but my instructor did an excellent job of giving me pointers about how to keep my bearings and get through this section.

Following lunch (again included), the field was reconfigured into a full autocross course. We split up into two groups again, and took turns working corners or driving. They had the timing lights set up, so I got to see my instructor’s time driving my car and compare it to my time. Turns out I’ve still got a lot to learn,

Jan Mayo pointing the way... with style!

Attending these classes was a very rewarding experience, if for nothing else than to have the opportunity to spin my 911 in a controlled environment. I always knew my car was capable of amazing things, and I was finally able to experience some of them. I also discovered that in the hands of an experienced driver my car is capable of much more than I had imagined. Thanks to everyone involved for putting on a great weekend, my instructor, Eric Erz for showing me what my car was capable of, and of course Porsche for building my car. Like they said, it’s not how fast you drive, it’s how you drive fast.
