My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Slipstream Managing Editor

W

e have now completed two weekends of schools for new autocrossers and what a wonderful time it was. Last year it was snowing and sleeting, this year, while it WAS a bit on the chilly and windy side, it was sunny and wonderful. Look later in the issue for pictures and articles by three lovely and witty ladies that thoroughly enjoyed themselves. You’ll wish you had been there.

a beautifully kept and meticulously cleaned car? Check out Bob Bianconi’s 997. The concours chair must be above reproach, shouldn’t he! Wish mine was as clean. Looking a little farther down the calendar is Parade. James mentioned a little about it in his last Catch My Draft article. Parade is several days of meeting up with old friends and cars, competing for that list concours point or fraction of a second on the autocross, and, of course, lots of eating. If you didn’t get registered on March 6th you’ll be wishing you hadn’t dawdled.

If you missed the schools, don’t despair – coming up are more autocrosses and time trials plus an April DE (14-15) and May Club Race / DE combo (26-27-28). More driving than you can stand and you’ll still be wishing for more.

OK~ do you have your Wish List made? Come to some Maverick events. You’ll find that wishes do come true!

Clint Blackman has his first Sunday Drive scheduled for April 29. It looks like such fun with early car perusal and drooling then a drive through Ennis to see the blue bonnets. With PCA-ers there’s always food involved so there’s a lunch stop in there too. Wish you could be there?

For those of you that watch the Anniversary section at the back of the book and comment, “Gee, I didn’t know they’d been in the club THAT long…” take notice that this Editor did not catch an ever so minor goof of the Membership chairman last month. Joel reported that Ed Mayo was a 30 year member (wow). We both have now been thoroughly chastised and corrected that Ed is a FORTY (40) year member (WOW). And yes, this is the same guy mentioned with the cigarette butts above. When you come to May at Mayo’s do give him appropriate congratulations on his longevity with PCA.

That’s all the moving car stuff. Would you rather it hold still and let you look ALLL over it? May at Mayo’s on Cinco de Mayo (appropriate enough?) will have a Concours. The judges WILL be looking ALLLL over each car checking out the dust bunnies and cigarette butts (don’t laugh, these have been found in Mayo cars – ask Ed, he’ll be thrilled to tell you all about it). Want to see

Catch my Draft by James Shoffit, the Maverick Region President

I

t was 1966, and my parents were living in Cairo, Egypt. My dad was over there working for an oil company, helping them determine the best places to drill. Both my parents were 40 years old, and I was only months away from being born. Fresh off the boat, they received a brand new 66 VW beetle – a 1300cc engine, baby blue, with a luggage rack on top. AM Radio. My mom drove it every day through the narrow streets of Cairo. She would pay street people a dime to park it for her. They didn’t need the keys – she just left it out of gear and they pushed it around by manually turning the wheels to get it nicely parked. Then December came and it was time for me to make my grand entrance. The doctor had told my mom I would need to be born caesarian, so she got in that VW beetle and those 4 horizontally opposed cylinders whisked her, and me along for the ride, to the hospital where I was born later that day. When I was about 6, my dad had added other VW’s to the stable. He had always been a Chevy guy before my birth – I still don’t know why he fell in love with the Volkswagens. So we were driving across the country in our VW bus, when the engine blew. A valve snapped right off. Luckily we were close to a cousin’s house, where he brought the bus and its tired engine, and he and my uncle replaced the engine themselves. I just watched in awe, too young to do much more than retrieve tools.

thought that would be the best engine for our little Beetle. And when a friend of mine at school got a 914, my dad and I were both envious. Years later, I bought my first 911 and my dad couldn’t wait to ride in it. He loved every second of it. He always wanted one, but for some reason never made it happen. I guess most people don’t realize how affordable the older ones can be. And when I got the second 911, the race car, he couldn’t wait till I got him strapped into the racing harness (at age 75) and took him on some fun runs. It was quite a thrill for him. Last year, my dad at age 80, with two new high-tech knees, was up on Jasmine’s trampoline, enjoying the view. And for his 80th birthday, he insisted on going to Six Flags with us so he could ride the Titan. He taught me to live life to the fullest. I was born with the sound of a flat boxer air-cooled engine behind me. That sound has propelled me through my youth and now into my 40s. And all because of my dad. He passed away March 11th after a massive stroke. I sure hope they have Porsches in heaven for him.

By the time I was 10, that Beetle I was almost born in was getting a bit long in the tooth. Something – I don’t remember what now – went wrong and he decided it was time for an upgrade. So we bought a new crate engine for it, and in my grandmother’s garage, he and I put a brand new 1600cc engine in it. I got to see all the parts separately, see how they interacted, and got a much better understanding of how engines work. For a birthday in that time frame, he bought me one of those visible engine models – clear engine block so you can see how the parts all move together. He taught me what everything was called and how the motion of all the parts worked together. He taught me, and showed me, so much. When I was 16, my mom taught me how to drive in that same Beetle. My parents agreed that I should learn to drive a stick shift first. After I had finished my driver’s education class at school, I needed a car to drive. So naturally, he gave me the keys to the Beetle. I drove it for my entire high school career. I always raced other kids from school on the drive to and from work. We were careful, but I did bend a rim one time when I slid into a curb. And I burnt up the clutch in short order. So my dad taught me about clutches and flywheels and pressure plates as he and I replaced the clutch. And about a year later we did the same thing again. After that I learned how to make a clutch last a LITTLE bit longer! Whenever we would be driving together in the Beetle, he would tell me that someday he was going to put a Porsche engine in it. My father was not particularly well-educated (book-learnin’ at least), but he knew how to pronounce Porsche. And he always 5

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis

I

n Attendance: James Shoffit, Bob Kuykendall, Michael Wingfield, Dennis Chamberlain, Bob Bianconi, Jan Mayo, Tracey Gross, Lisa Steele, Kevin Hardison, Teri Davis, Charlie Davis, Robyn Howard, Travis Howard, and Wendy Shoffit. James called the meeting to order at 7:01 PM. He reported that Keith Olcha and John Sandusky would share duties as temporary DE chair. He further said that the Mother’s Day DE at Eagle Canyon was still pending but that the track probably won’t be finished in time. Dennis said that the Happy Hour at Go Fish had a small turnout due to weather. The next Happy Hour will be at Saltgrass. We discussed the possibility of having a Happy Hour /driving event at the new kart track near La Grave field in Ft. Worth. It seemed to be well liked, but we need more information about group events. Before Dennis left (carrying a small cookie…James wouldn’t let him have the big one), he and Bob K discussed the audit. They will work out the details offline. Bob K said we still have money, then went back to writing checks. Michael said that he had intended to discuss DE’s, but after James’s report, there was nothing further to say. Except that the recent DE made a little less than $3000. It was not full. He noted that our DE events help pay for the Club Race. Bob B said that the website concerning our new Concours series has been started. He has not yet picked a date for the fall event. He will do that later. Jan is anxiously awaiting 2 articles regarding our Autocross Schools from Lisa. We then had a lengthy discussion about who planned the PorschePlatz, but I didn’t understand anything that was said. [ed. Lanean Hughes had done most all the planning for 2006 PorschePlatz with possibly some help from Shelly Burbank and Bryan Henderson. Our Zone Rep Caren Cooper will do the planning for 2007. If anyone is wanting to help please contact Caren.] Tracey reminded us that the Wine Tasting at Premiere Wines in Plano was only a few days away. She has only four openings left at this juncture. The next social event will be our annual May at Mayo’s on May 5th (note that this is Cinco De Mayo!). Finally she corrected the February Minutes, which had reported that founders day would be at Austin Ranch…this was incorrect reporting by your secretary. Oops… We discussed the pros and cons of several Father’s Day venues. Lisa reported that she had gotten phone calls for several unclassified ads. We decided this was due to her name and telephone number being displayed prominently on page 28 (the font size was large enough that members could read it, in contrast to the tiny size of the correct information at the top of the page). Jan said she can fix that…and would. Lisa gave an accounting of the attendance at our recent Autocross and TimeTrial schools: Ladies & Teens = 17, AX 101 = 24, AX 102 = 24, and TT 103 = 14. Kevin announced that he has lots of old Slipstreams (from the past 9 years). He no longer has room to keep them and inquired if anybody had a place? They are in 8 standard-size moving boxes. Anybody?

8

Teri reported that the Rally on Sunday, March 11th, is planned. She needs to make one more trip to finish all the details. She suggested there be a rally@mavpca.org where she could receive rally oriented e-mails. She also needs ClubRegistration.net to be set up so that rally entrants can pay there. Charlie asked Jan to let him know which of the pictures (that he posted on his web site) taken at the AX schools she wanted for slipstream. Robyn said she liked Jan’s blue hair thingie (you had to be at the first autocross school to understand). Travis suggested that our DE price should be set at $199 (there had been a brief discussion of what price point would get the most customers). He sort of volunteered to be the AX/TT safety inspection guy. He got a lot of encouragement. YES…a volunteer! Go, Travis! Wendy reported that the Club Race registration was open now. James adjourned the meeting at 8:10 PM and grabbed that last (BIG) cookie.

Ladies/Teens/AX102 Schools by Denise Sanchez Notes from the newbie... Wow! Man, that was a blast! Better than...hmmm (ice cream?)! Can't we go around again?! Cold? Didn't feel it - too much adrenalin, too much concentration! Can't wait till next time! What more can I say?

T

he ever infectiously enthusiastic Lisa Steele has twisted my arm to provide some observations of a newcomer to the Autocross schools: Ladies and Teens AX School (held at Pennington Field) and AX 102 (at Mineral Wells). I admit that after wanting to take these classes for so many years, the level of nightbefore excitement was great enough to keep me from sleeping much. With so much anticipation, I suppose there could be a danger of the experience not living up to the dream. No such case. The classes more than delivered. To other new members: This is a great group of diverse individuals with a common passion; it's wellplanned; and it's seriously fun. You've got to try it. And here's what you can expect.

was a different matter, but the whole point was to improve with each run, and we did. The classes were divided into two groups, one to take several runs on the course while the other learned to work corners, with a switch half-way through. Actually, working the corners is just as instructive as driving. Besides chasing flying cones and radioing in hit cones and DNFs, this is the opportunity to analyze how other drivers are running the course, what works, and what doesn't. Thanks go to everyone who works on a committee or volunteers for a day, for their professionalism and dedication to making these events enjoyable and educational. Can't think of a better way to go home exhausted and exhilarated. See you at TMS!

In my eagerness, I arrived too early the first day, but this provided an opportunity to meet people. Second only to their warm welcome was the clear sense of organization. While the student set-up unfolded (sign-in, name tags, donuts and coffee, car numbers and parking spots, empty the car, tech inspections, meet your instructor), the AX volunteers were busy setting cones out to mark the morning exercises. After spending years in organizations where four people seem to do all the work, it's great to see the number of members who are involved, and how smoothly everything came together. A quick general meeting and introduction by Bryan Bell and Tom Snodgrass, then instructions to students and instructors, and we were off to the good part - squeals and smoke on the braking exercise; flying cones on the skid pad; and swinging rear ends on the slaloms. A note about tech inspections: The new procedure is to perform these the morning of the event during sign-in, rather than having it done during the week prior; which means drivers need to be sure everything's in order before arriving, or not drive that day. Take advantage of this chance to ask questions. I received numerous suggestions for improvements, and even though everything passed, some things could be tweaked.

A hooded mystery instructor gives Lisa Savage some early morning tips

I'm sure all the Maverick instructors are excellent, but Shelly Burbank's excitement and clear direction (“Gas! Gas! Gas!) were fantastic. Making it 2 for 2 in top-notch instruction was Eric Erz, who patiently explained the physics of why things work the way they do on the course, at the second class. Mornings were spent with instructors driving the exercises first, then students taking half a dozen runs at each. After a quick lunch provided by the club (brilliant way to keep people from leaving and showing up late for the afternoon), the volunteers set up the AX course and timing lights, and we walked it with our instructors. Yes, it all sounded so logical, as Shelly and Eric pointed out the best line to follow, when to brake, when to hit the gas, and where to look. hen we first pulled into the Pennington parking lot the morning of the Ladies school and saw all those beautiful, little European cars, my first thought was, “Oh my gosh, am I going to stick out in this crowd!” I wondered how I’d be accepted in my big, old, brown 1979 Corvette…….I had nothing to worry about.

Wendy had already been a dear; answering ALL my emails before the event. Then there was Lisa and Andrea – what a great welcoming committee! Tom got all the students comfortable with the day’s agenda. And lucky me! Bryan was my instructor the first day. Joel followed the next day at Autocross 101 and then Gabby two weeks later at the Autocross 102 and Time Trial 103 schools. I was SO impressed by the level of professionalism, skill and patience shown by all of the instructors…..especially mine! I’m not easy to teach and I know I tried all of their patience throughout the day……but each of them stayed with me and didn’t give up on me. And now I am COMPLETELY hooked on AutoX and Time Trial! A few of the things each of my instructors taught me in these four days of schools included: 1 - Be smooth to be fast. I learned the hard way that at higher speeds, my ‘vette (and probably just about any car) doesn’t like to be jerked around. I went on more than one quick 360º tour of the course before I put it all together that high speed plus jerking the wheel equals a very noisy, embarrassing spin or just as embarrassing but somewhat impressive slide. In relation to that, in the slalom, there

shouldn’t be any pauses. Just a smooth flow of the wheel as you move left and right. If you are pausing, you can go faster through that slalom. 2 - When getting around a circle or sweeping turn, get your hands/wheel set to get around it and use the gas to get closer to the cones or to move out away from them. There may be some wheel movement, but a lot can be done by coming “off the gas” or “on the gas” just a little bit. 3 - NO COASTING! You’re either on the gas or on the brakes. You do NOT coast in AutoX! 4 - RELAX and breath! Before your run, take a few deep breaths, wiggle your fingers, sit back in your seat, close your eyes and RELAX! During your run, remind yourself to take a breath every now and then. 5 - The one most important thing I learned and practiced at all four schools was to left-foot brake. It takes some getting used to in an automatic, but I see where this will be an advantage as my skill-level increases. 6 - HAVE FUN! There’s nothing to compare to the rush you’re going to feel at the end of a good run. I have enjoyed my brief time with the Porsche Club immensely. These folks like to welcome and encourage “newbies” to the auto sports world and make everyone feel right at home. Gals don’t need to be intimidated by this so-called “man’s sport”… as I have witnessed numerous female drivers that are excelling in this arena. This is FUN and I have enjoyed my time behind the wheel each and every time I am out on the course.

THANK YOU Thank you to all the helpers of all sizes. Without the cone pickeruppers, corner watchers, registrars, and instructors these schools would not happen. [ed. Tales from a First Timer by Trish Moncus

O

n a cool Sunday in March at the young age of 47, I was able to experience a first- my first ever driving school event! My husband Les, who has been involved with Porsches forever, as a driver, club member, instructor, official and all around aficionado, felt it was time that I learned what my 06 Cayenne S could do, in a safe and controlled environment and with instructions from someone I wasn’t married to. So he signed me up for Time Trial School 103 and I was ready to try this.

We headed out to Mineral Wells on Saturday, so I could have a peek at the track and get an idea what a school was like. My first thought was- Ohmigosh, I’m supposed to drive my Cayenne, which looked like a Winnebago next to all these sports cars, around all of these cones without hitting them and try not to embarrass the Moncus family name- what have I gotten myself in to! By day, I am an executive at Citigroup and pride myself that I can usually adapt to most situations, but I was way out of my element here. At Saturday nights’ dinner, I had nothing to add to the conversation as I realized I’m basically car illiterate and even the women could talk cars!! But things improved on Sunday as I was saved in the form of my instructor, Bryan Bell. Bryan had ‘volunteered’ to take the Cayenne S as he is a Touraeg driver and very comfortable driving the RV, albeit at much faster speeds. So, after a pretty tentative morning and minimal cone damage, we headed into the afternoon of actual time trials and I was nervous. With each lap, I gained more confidence, I stopped pointing at my apex (again, thanks to Bryan), I braked faster, I accelerated quicker- basically, I was pumped and it was cool. At the conclusion of the day, I had achieved my goals; I improved times with each subsequent try, starting at a 101, and ending with an 86, with only 1 DNF. I hadn’t brought shame to the Moncus name and I realized underneath all the SUV-ness of my car beat the heart of a Porsche. It was also helpful that I was surrounded by some of the nicest people, giving me encouragement, sharing their experiences and not making me feel like I was completely illiterate along with a fabulous instructor who knows how to make you take it to the edge you are comfortable with. So I will be back, but next time it will be in the husband’s new Cayman S……

One of many examples was Tinker Edwards, who gave Mark Gluck, Cathy Walther and I a great history of the Maverick Club. In the process we learned, among other things, that Charlie Davis was the President who is responsible for the Happy Hours and the Mentor Chair, which Tinker initiated. Thanks, Charlie. I didn’t know that, or I would have thanked you before.

Doug & Melinda Molny For our April 19th happy hour, we return to Mac’s Steaks and Seafood in Colleyville, which was a tremendous hit last summer. You’ll find it on the west side of Highway 121, just South of the Railhead Smokehouse, and right next to Rio Mambo. Hope to see you there!

Still, there was something warm and cozy about our little group gathered around the bar, which held us together like a glowing, crackling, amber fireplace. There were no new members on this particular evening, but there was something about our small, intimate group of regulars that I’ll remember for years.

his was the evening that the weathermen warned would be the coldest and windiest of the year, and for once, they were right. It was brutal! Go Fish was almost empty, except for 18 brave Mavericks who ventured out into the cold and into the restaurant’s warmth. Whenever the front door would open, we’d feel the frigid cold all the way back in the depths of the bar.
