nirt. We don’t have any in Texas. Snirt is the mixture of snow, dirt, and ice that marks early spring in North Dakota. Snirt happens when all the snow that falls between November and March just gets “saved up” for the spring thaw. Snirt is very ugly, but the people of the state are not. It always amazes me to see the vitality and enthusiasm of the people who live in North Dakota. Very Refreshing. The Huffaker Hughes Hope House (HHHH), as most of you know, is the Maverick Region’s primary charity. I reported last December on our plan to turn what is now a bit of an eye sore into an outdoor sanctuary for the women and children at the home. Knowing how enthusiastic the Maverick Region is, I know we will continue to make a difference in the lives of those at H4 and contribute to the fund-raiser. I am happy to report we are well on the way to making that happen. Now, all we need to do is pay for it. All of us can help. We are forming two very elite clubs: The HHHH Millennium Club, and the HHHH Century Club. To be a member, all you need to do is give a contribution of at least $1,000 for the Millennium Club or $100 or more for the Century Club. We will publish the membership in a later addition of Slipstream, and you will receive a memento in recognition of your generosity. Please give us a shout and a check. Thank you.

Mav of the Month Our “Mav of the Month” is Richard Bradley. Richard was a five year member who was willing to take on what is arguably the most challenging position in our club: Slipstream Editor. Richard keeps on expanding and improving our newsletter. Under his watch, Slipstream has gone color, expanded by four pages, and added several new monthly features. He continues to make an award winning newsletter better and better. 2

For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Richard dinner for two at their award winning steak house. Richard, thanks for all you do! Mike

So hold on to your seat and buckle up, there’s plenty of new articles to peruse and upcoming events to take part in. The Maverick Region is a very active group of Porsche lovin’ individuals of all ages. Get out and make some new friends. One very important event I hope you consider becoming involved in is the beautification of Huffaker-Hughes Hope House’s back yard. We are transforming their backyard from nothing to nothing less than fabulous. If you can’t make the April 10th...Hope House Phase 2 Assemblage day, don’t worry, there will be a third phase where we will finish off the beautification with flower beds and the like. Keep an eye out for info in the coming months. The Phase 2 information is below so check it out and contact Linda and let her know you can help. As always, please send in any ideas for changes that might benefit Slipstream as well as any articles that you have brewing. I’d love to hear from you!

Maverick Minutes Lisa Steele, Secretary

O

ur fearless leader was a man on a mission this month. He had a lot of “HOPE” in his heart. Mike shared his passion about a new project for the Hope Shelter. Mike has learned that the backyard of the Hope Shelter is in dire need of an “extreme makeover.” He made the comment that the yard looks “junkie” and not kid friendly. Linda Bambina has been doing a lot of research on playground equipment, irrigation, and landscaping. The projected cost of this project is around $22,000. Linda has found a great deal on playground equipment that would need to be purchased quickly to get a more than half price discount. The cost of the equipment will be about $8,000. Currently, we have $2,400 to give to the Hope Shelter (donations from various driving events and donations made on clubregistration. net). A motion was called by Christy Payne for the club to commit to pay up to $6,000 with the intent that the club will recover all or part of our donation and that we will gather these funds by May 1st. Lisa Steele 2nd the motion. A vote was taken and it was a unanimous vote in agreement of the

motion. Christy agreed to make an ad for Slipstream and we will follow up with a Fun Drive to collect donations. Jim Falgout passed out the Budget for 2010. All Chairs submitted their budgets for each of their events for the 2010 budget. Wendy Shoffit made a motion to approve the 2010 budget that runs from January thru December. John Hamilton 2nd the motion. Unanimous approval! Jim finished with telling us that “We have money!” Chris Christensen is looking for any recommendations for good places to have a Happy Hour. Bob Lewis showed the board a great brochure designed by his granddaughter, Sabrina Gunica. This brochure contains general information and requests for what the club wants at happy hour locations. Great idea!! John Hamilton reported that we have 85 actual drivers registered for the upcoming DE at Eagles Canyon. John was excited to announce that we will be expecting some very important guests at the DE. Kurt and Angie Gibson (our national president and his wife) are registered to drive with us. Something new for this DE will be name badges for all drivers. Carey Spreen thinks it would be fun to have a Drive/ Rally to Scarborough Fair. He will talk with Clint Blackman. Carey is looking at May 9th for this “medieval adventure.” Jan Mayo speaking for Richard Bradley wants to make sure that recent events and upcoming events will have people to write articles. Also, events need to have ads ready to place in Slipstream. Jan Mayo speaking for herself reported that there are about 6 advertisers that have still not paid…”I pity the people who still need to pay, cause Jan is gonna get mean.” Bryan Bell would like to be John Hamilton’s instructor at the upcoming Autocross School (could it be the car???). Christy Payne reported that there was a great turn out at the Thursday Lunch at Kincaid’s with 12 people. She has also been working very diligently on her Social Budget which includes some great upcoming social events. Christy announced that she is planning a Father’s Day Outing at Speed Zone. Zoom! Zoom! She has also been busy working out all of the details for the combined Founder’s Day and Holiday Party at the Gaylord Texan. Christy is looking at December 4th for this event pending the Gaylord’s calendar. Ms. Event Planner herself, Christy has also arranged for the Autocross/Time Trial Awards Dinner to take place at Dave and Busters. She will talk with Tannia Dobbins (AX Chair) and schedule accordingly. Wendy Shoffit announced that the Parade registration form is on the website. Actual registration opens on March 9th.

8

Ed Mullinex would like to remind everyone to plan on attending a Tech Session on May 8th at his place. See Slipstream or checkout our website for detailed information. Pat Friend was excited to announce that the Goodie Store will go live in the next day or so‌check it out! Travis Howard is looking forward to the Autocross/ Time Trial season to start. He reminded the group that there are 2 Time Trial events scheduled at MSR. Good Times!! Robyn Howard reported on the Time Trial School at Mineral Wells. There were 8 students and there were no major problems. The Autocross School set for March 14th already has 18 students registered. Last thing on the agenda for the evening was to announce the Mav of the Month. If you read Slipstream carefully, you already know that RICHARD BRADLEY has the well deserved title this month. Congratulations Richard and Thank You for all you do!!!

Mavericks Build With Habitat by Tom Snodgrass

M

averick Region volunteers joined many others for the first build day on the 50th house for Habitat for Humanity of South Collin County. Saturday, February 20th started with a pleasant, cool morning. Standing on the concrete slab surrounded by dirt, it was hard to imagine that we would have all the inside and outside walls up by the early afternoon. Prominent is the homeowner who gets to drive the first ceremonial nail. Jasmine Anderson was all smiles as we were about to get started building her house!

away to a parking lot that was big enough to spread out the wall sections and put them together. Jasmine worked on the slab, so we weren’t exactly elbow-to-elbow with her, but whenever we went back, she was right there earning her sweat equity. Of course, building walls isn’t all that simple! The 2x4’s need to be lined up exactly, and the right number of nails need to be pounded in straight. If they get bent, they have to be pulled out and started over again. Once the walls were done and quality checked, they were carried down the middle of the street back to the slab where they were put together like puzzle pieces.

It probably seemed more real as everybody Great job at helping build the community loaded up with hammers, nail Lunch time was well aprons, and big 16 penny nails. Maybe we were going to received. Not just because it was late, but because we also get some work done after all! Then we walked half a block needed a break. Most weekday office dwellers are not used

to this much physical exercise, and maybe not used to getting up that early on a Saturday! Once all the walls were up, we put sheets of OSB (like plywood) on the entire exterior. We covered the doors and windows most of the way around the house. Then some brave soul used a router to cut the doors and windows out. Brave because it is noisy and surrounds you with a sawdust Wendy, Jan, Mark, Linda & Tom cloud. After that, it was time for cleanup. The city of Plano likes a clean work site, so we cleaned up the extra wood, put away the tools, swept the floors and our work was done for the day! New Maverick Goodie Store by Pat Friend

T

he Maverick Region has just launched a “new and improved” version of the Goodie Store. The changes were made in order to totally automate the Goodie Store so that Maverick Members will find it much easier to order and receive Maverick Region merchandise from such names as Izod, Tommy Hilfiger, Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, Reebok, PGA Tour, and many others. You can access the new Goodie Store NOW simply by “clicking” on the Goodie Store button on the Maverick Region website just as in the past. The new Goodie Store is administered by Charlton Commerce which has created goodie stores for over 25 other PCA regions. They have extensive experience creating and managing merchandise stores for non-profit organizations such as the Maverick Region. We currently have approx. 160 items in the store plus Maverick Region specialized products such as the Maverick Region name tags and helmet bags. All of the products can be embroidered with our Maverick Region logo. All items can be paid for via credit card or PayPal. The items are then shipped via UPS using standard freight to overnight delivery. The profit margins on the products are kept very low for the benefit of our members. Please take advantage of the new Goodie Store. It is quick, easy, fun and it is created exclusively for the benefit of the Maverick Region and its members. If you want something added, please let me know and we will try to get it. If you have any questions, comments or problems, please contact Pat Friend, p.friend@att.net or call (214) 616-2477.

Nick Abbott, PArk PlAce Porsche eNthusiAst:

PushiNg the PerformANce eNveloPe.

I purchased my 911 back in December 2006 from Park Place Porsche. I’ve always driven German cars, but never a Porsche. Randall, the parts manager, introduced the PCA world to me. After the first try I was hooked, and since then, I’ve done frequent DE events with Park Place. Park Place has, by far, the best service department. The technicians are very skilled, friendly and informative, and their attention to detail is superb. It is also a comforting feeling that many of them are involved in motor sports, which takes the guesswork out of performance upgrades. They’re unlike any other dealership I’ve worked with in recommending and helping you not only with Porsche parts and accessories, but also after-market products to improve performance while maintaining your warranty. Among the upgrades I’ve made are a short shifter, spacers, a high flow filter, and performance brake pads, but my favorite changes are the suspension modifications and straight flow exhaust, because of the performance and sound. I’ve been really impressed with the whole family of Park Place. From service to parts, everyone really works together to meet all your needs at great prices. Another thing I really like about Park Place Porsche is that they really focus on building a relationship. Going to Park Place doesn’t feel like going to a dealership; it feels like a fun place to hang out and talk cars. The overall experience at Park Place has been above and beyond any other car dealerships, and I’m definitely going to be a lifelong customer.

So You Want To Drive A Racecar! by Bob McAfee

t this point, you should have the car back now from getting the rollcage installed. You will need to paint the cage so that it looks good and doesn’t rust. We usually paint the cage and the interior at the same time since Porsche does not paint the floorboards completely since the carpeting and seats cover this area. The next step is getting the car to handle and run better and longer. As far as handling goes, the rulebook is very specific in the components that can be used. Without going into great detail the main components are Bilstein PSS9 coilovers with 450lb front springs and 500lb rear springs. Cliff’s Ramblings by Cliff Blackshear

I

was not sure what I wanted to write for the April issue until after today was over. I’m driving home around 7:30 at night and my mind is racing as I work my way through the day all over again during the commute. I went in this morning and looked at a Lotus that I wanted to work on. Transmission has to come out for input shaft seal leak plus install new flywheel seal, and new clutch assembly, while in that area. I’ve already adjusted the valves, replaced cam belt, resealed intake manifold, resealed both exhaust and intake camshaft housings. Put some touches on electrical connections and other odds and ends that I knew need a little care to maintain optimum system performance. Started engine after above work and was rewarded with an engine that sounded much healthier than it did before work began. So I’m driving home thinking about the day and wishing I could concentrate on this Turbo Esprite tomorrow. Yet my most favorite thing about my job is its’ diversity with all things Porsche. I knew the Lotus had to wait, as the shop was busy this morning when I arrived. Went to my office and jump-started the computer. Looked for a reply from Porsche technical about two cars we were dealing with. One was a ’05, 997 that had been at a DE the previous weekend at Eagles Canyon. Check engine light came on and the analysis log indicated multiple problems. Other car was a 997 Grand Am series racecar. Mike is finishing a conversion on it to meet new rules in the Grand Am series. It had a Bosch system that was running everything and the new rules required stock control units for fuel/ignition systems. That means reinstalling everything. The techs for the race team had already installed factory wire harness and all new control units, DME (fuel ignition processor), PAS (alarm/ immobilizer), gateway control unit, front and rear control units, ignition switch, ELV (locking mechanism for steering that is electrically active yet mechanically disconnected for safety reasons). All we needed to do was get all this fresh software to talk to each other, not an easy task. Our PIWIS (Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System) tester could not interface with any one of them. Nothing we tried was working. The CAN (Controller Area Network) system was asleep and we were unable to wake it up. So I entered the shop anticipating those cars to resolve problems with. A Cayman pops up on my radar right away. Jeff had it and was trying to find a noise problem. I had ridden with the owner the day before and knew the conditions

A Day In A Porsche Workshop (speed, RPM, etc.) that noise was occurring at. The car had been through some trauma. It had rolled unattended backwards into something and a brick fell through the back window. Another shop had replaced the glass. We discovered that a lot of glass fragments were still inside the metal frame. You could simply open the rear lid and hear the fragments slide towards the lower areas. OK, so now it is a noise that might not be a warrantable issue... Good grief. Contact owner. Long story from there. Ultimately glass fragments are removed, a test drive follows and yet another noise rears its’ ugly head. Finally put Abel behind the right seat with his head poked under rear hatch (“Lizard” is small enough and willing to help), and drove him around to try to further isolate where it is coming from. Find that brushed aluminum panel immediately behind engine bay cover is making the noise. Removed and replaced with new part. Problem solved. There went 2 hours of my day.... Next I get a call from PCNA technical. We discuss Grand Am car and possible avenues of getting all the control units to talk to each other. Finally decide that the car owner needs to bring another racecar they have that has all factory ECU’s installed and use it to program the new control units one by one. Next a discussion about our 997 with multiple faults (many occurred at 6500 rpm). We knew that some of the high priority faults (O2 sensing and catalyst aging) were real. We also knew some of the others (vario valve lift implausible signal), were just software issues. The problem was sorting which to follow and which to ignore. Technical guys were awesome as they walked along with us through the data. We threw out ideas, they threw out ideas. Ultimately we sorted it out and fixed the car with an O2 sensor and a new catalyst for bank 2. The valve lift faults were deemed irrelevant as the valve lift system passed every test we threw at it. Monitored actual values and all were spot on. Appears to be a software issue to report and let factory resolve. The car was driven in a very “spirited manner” for quite a while and valve lift faults did not come back. Next Fred has an unusual electrical problem he is dealing with in another Cayman. Owner drives car every day. Commutes to work in the car and commutes about 20 miles. Car had been in a couple weeks before with a dead battery. Battery was replaced, charging system checked ok, and parasitic draw was nice and low. Now it is back with another dead battery. Owner had driven to a store was out of car a few minutes and when he came back it would not turn over. We get it and the battery is heavily drained. Has not enough energy to crank the engine. Charge battery and checked

April 19

every way possible; each cell had excellent specific gravity and load tested with flying colors. Check charging system output (again ok) then check parasitic drain (all good). Huh? So I take the car and just start over with it. All is good. Nothing fails any test I can throw at it... Huuuummmm. So I just let it run for a while. Heat soak it. Check to see if some fan is staying on too long after shut down. Nothing.... Run it some more and suddenly the alternator charging voltage starts skewing. It is all over the place. 15+ volts then barely 13 volts. Turn on lights and they are dimming then getting brighter then dimming again. Check all grounds; check all B+ positive connections (all ok). Fred replaces alternator while I go back to see what else is in the shop. The alternator replacement seems to have resolved unstable voltage problem, but still the reason battery was drained is not really apparent... I dunno at this point. I do know we spent a huge amount of time to get to where we are and it is not satisfying us yet....... Meanwhile, we have a 959 in the shop from overseas. People are hearing about it and coming by to look at it. This is somewhat worrisome to me. I’m driving home and worrying over a car in the shop that everybody wants to examine up close... Been thru that with Carrera GT introduction etc. Yet this car is somehow much more special and interesting than any Carrera GT I’ve been around. A day in the rambling life eh?

Member Spotlight: Matt Lemons by Andrea Bell

T

his month, I am pleased to introduce another one of our new members, Matt Lemons. Matt actually owns two Porsches, one for ten years now and the second for three years. He added, “I guess I’ve just been slow to join PCA.” Both cars are 1986 944 Turbos. His daily(ish) driver is Alpine white and the “track car project” is Zermatt silver. He said he started doing some small modifications on the silver car and it snowballed into a much larger project. Matt missed having it on the street so much, that he bought the white car from a close friend. According to Matt, the white car is still pretty tame. He added, “I cranked the boost a bit and added some Bilstein coil overs and HRE wheels to make Dallas traffic a bit more fun!” Matt reports that he has been driving for 19 years and has owned over 20 very different vehicles. However, he claims, “the vehicles I keep the longest and stay interested in have been Porsches.” Matt fell in love with Porsches as a child and started working around them when he was 16 years old. He says he washed cars and mopped floors at DC Racing & Development in Irving. A few jobs and several years later, he opened his own shop in 2005.

Running Lemco Motorsports has been a childhood dream come true. They specialize in custom vehicle fabrication. He said, “People who are passionate about cars are great to work with and I love being able to help them realize their goals.” Matt was born in Dallas, and although he has traveled as far as Germany, he just never found a good enough reason to live outside the DFW area. Matt also loves spending time with family and friends. Most of the time, cars are not far away. He said he tries to involve as many people as he can in his car hobby. He reports that he is a certified gear head and enjoys everything from car shows to racing in events, like the 24 Hours of Lemons, (the name is just coincidence). He added that he is looking forward to being an integral part of the PCA community and participating in our events. Keep an eye out for Matt, at one of our next events, and extend your welcome into the Maverick Region family. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT’ feature, please contact me at pr@mavpca.org.

Happy Hour at iFratelli by Bob Lewis

T

his month we met at one of the Happy Hour locations that has been very well attended in the

past. This is because of its central location in the metro-plex and the quality of their Italian food. This year was no exception. We had a good crowd of about 40 people including first time Happy Hour attendees Roxanne Koepsell, Ed and Jean Sims, and Don Sebert.

photos by Bob Lewis Next month we are going to the Bavarian Grill. This is the only German restaurant in our rotation. It is in north Plano and is a very popular place. They have authentic German food, drink, and music. In May we are going to Joe T Garcia’s in Fort Worth. Hope to see you soon.

Don Sebert is a transfer from the Kansas City Happy times with other Mavs at iFratelli region where he was active, as well as being a club racer. It was easy for him to find us through our web site as well as our newsletter, Slipstream. He had a number of questions about our events so we talked about his interests. When I learned he had been active in the club-racing program, I introduced him to James Shoffit, our zone representative. He and James talked at length about our tracks in this area as well as other support activities. We had some excitement at iFratelli’s. Even though I requested their back room for our function a month earlier they did not give it to us exclusively. We had to share the area with an adult birthday party group, which made our space seem cramped. However, this fiasco has a silver lining. My

Another part of the iFratelli crowd

grand daughter constructed a list of the needs of our Happy Hour. She included a graphic to add some flair. It tells the potential establishment of how we advertise their location, and of course there is the article in Slipstream about the event. 24

Autocross, You’ll Love It By Michelle Barton

M

y friend Tannia had been pestering me for months to sign up for the PCA autocross school and finally enrolled me herself just to get me going; nothing like a gentle kick in the butt. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I figured it would be mostly a group of men that would be impatient with a woman driver on their course. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose by participating, so off we went, road trip to Dallas, one instructor, one student and one fast Carrera. We arrived at Pennington early in the morning, registered, started looking at cars and visiting with students and instructors while the course was being set up. I was surprised and reassured to see several women there as students, instructors, and course workers. There were also a variety of cars, not just Porsches. We took everything out of the cars for the tech inspection. The course was divided into two sections and students were put in cars with their instructors. Lisa, my instructor, drove the course first and showed me what to do and how the car would react. Then it was my turn. I loved the 2 slalom runs, even made a cone wiggle. The chicane was a little harder for me and it seemed that I always wanted to brake too early. After several practice runs, the students switched sides of the course and we practiced hard-braking, skid pads, and pivots. During the skid pad exercise we were told the Carrera was making a funny noise. It was reassuring to know that everyone is watching out for each other. We got the car checked out, determined that it was not mechanical, and back in the saddle we went. After lunch, a great boxed lunch provided by the club, we walked the course with instructors. Student/instructors teams were divided up – work the course, and then drive the course. Some advice to next year’s students: don’t work corner one if you just want to stand and watch. We ran out a lot to reposition cones since this was the long slalom and Just a wiggle it seemed almost everyone hit a cone there. As it got closer to our turn to drive the course, I started to get a little nervous. Was I going to stall the car? Would I take out a bunch of cones? Was I going to be the slowest? Alas, all that was forgotten after the first run with the instructor driving. I couldn’t wait for my turn! It felt a little like sitting at the front of a roller coaster, just much smoother. Then it was my turn, the hardest part is 26

Photos by Charlie Davis waiting for the green light. I was ready to go! Green light! And I’m off, my instructor Lisa was great, she calmly gave me instructions, give it the gas, brake, feather it, hard right, give the gas, hard left, give it gas, hit the brake, towards the gate, turn it hard, give it the gas, give it gas, stop. I LOVED it and couldn’t wait to go again. My favorite part of the course was the short fast slalom and the pivot cone. Sliding around the cone was unbelievably fun. Loved it, loved it, loved it. I got better/faster with each run. Everyone was friendly, encouraging. Club members made sure we all had a good time while watching out for our safety. At the end of the day, I felt like I had learned a lot, made some new friends and am looking forward to seeing them and the pivot cone again in the near future. I want to especially thank Tannia for opening my eyes to a really fun sport … and for letting me borrow her car for the ride of my life! All smiles

Learning Car Control Via Time Trial By Russ Rosenberg

I

have been waiting awhile to get started in racing. Now 53, I have been a car fanatic since birth. As finances allowed, I have always owned nice cars, usually sports cars. In no particular order, I’ve owned a 914, 911, MG, MR2, TT and most recently a TVR. When my TVR died in a freak accident last October, I was heartbroken. I was and still am building a Brunton Super Stalker (Lotus 7 clone) in my garage, anticipating an opportunity to try my hand at racing, something I have wanted to do since my 20’s. I had planned on using the Super Stalker when it was complete, but took the opportunity to buy a Miata to replace the TVR. According to GrassRoots Motorsports magazine, a Miata is the answer to all questions automotive. I thought why not start in the Miata and once comfortable in a car that is not too powerful upgrade to the nearly 300hp Supercharged 1400 lb Super Stalker.

Photos by Charlie Davis to make sure I go over the limit so I can see where the limit is and he also reminded me to have fun.

Our first event was the skid-pad. Mitch went first, then me. I met my first cone there, and I ate it. It was a great exercise to understand how the car would perform at the traction limit. I found that the Miata was pretty neutral unless pushed too hard at which point it would over-steer. Next we were off to the half course. Mitch went first and it was fun to see how he handled the course. He really squeezed a lot out of my little Miata, but the best part is he missed a corner on his first try. That made me feel better, even the instructors aren’t perfect. Then it was my turn. There was only two words to describe how I felt after my first run, and that would be Holy %(*&! Several more attempts and Mitch decided to step out of the car I decided to look for a venue to try my luck. and let me go solo. Or maybe he I met my first cone... I had some limited Autocross experience, but was thinking it might be safer……. I knew enough to know that flat out racing would require I got faster and faster. After many turns we switched to the a much different skill set than Autocross. I looked around other half. Braking exercise, then slalom and then the other the usual places on the web to find a school or event to try half of the total course, which had more straights and higher when I came across the Maverick speeds. It was fun, but different than the morning because Region of the PCA. A couple of it was much simpler. emails and I was introduced to All too soon it was time for lunch. We discussed the Robyn Howard who answered my morning with the other students, and generally just took a questions, seemed real friendly and break to relax. After lunch was the actual time trial. Once made me feel like this was the event again Mitch went first, and ran a 92 second average on his for me. I booked my reservation laps. Then it was my turn. First time through I missed a and had about 3 weeks to get my turn and the start/finish line. I found Watch out for the cone Miata ready. The night before throughout the day the most difficult the TT, I got my Helmet, tools and stuff I thought I’d part for me was reading the cones need at the track, packed my car and tried to get a good in the center of the course. Once I night,s sleep. ran a section a couple of times I was Finally, it’s the morning of February and Time Trial fine. I guess I’m a slow learner. In School was finally here. I arrived right about 8:00 am my last set of laps I really started Control at turn-in and was one of the last people there. Not knowing to get it. I ran a 102, 101 and 100 what to do, I walked towards the group and introduced second consecutively, eight seconds behind Mitch. I started myself. Before I could even get a word out Robyn asked if to feel more confident, anticipate the course and find better I was Russ. She told me I had a “special” instructor who racing lines. I was becoming better by the lap. Then we also drove a Miata, referred to him as Miata Mitch. Mitch took our turn at a corner station. It was very interesting came in from helping set up the course and we started seeing other cars drive the course. I know I have a lot to talking. I was a little nervous, but ready to get started so learn, but I couldn’t have had a better day (or more fun) of after we inspected my car we just started talking about what learning. Several days later I still have a smile on my face. to expect. Mitch has been racing for a lot of years so I felt Thanks to Mitch, Robyn and all the other club members comfortable that I was in good hands. He explained what for the most fun day I have ever had in a car. See you in we would do throughout the day so I knew what to expect. April at TT #3. Mitch gave me two great pieces of advice right off. He said

Tech Corner by Ed Mullenix

A

special thank you to Steve Fordham, of AUTOSCOPE for hosting the dyno session held on March 13th. We had a good turnout with 15 club members showing up on a beautiful Saturday morning. John V. brought his 993 Turbo that puts 450 horses to the rear wheels and made the windows of the viewing room shake. Robert P’s 996 GT3 was next with 330 HP from a naturally aspirated motor. We had a pair of Cayman S’s that came out dueling for bragging rights. One made 266 HP and the other topped 277HP. A pair of “stock” Boxsters that produced a respectable 206 and 217 HP was next in line. Andy K’s ’79 SC topped 150 HP at the rear wheels. Everyone had a great time and we were all pressed against the windows of the viewing room to see the numbers on the dyno monitor. After the dyno session, we all drove to “Babe’s Chicken” in old downtown Carrollton where Steve picked up the tab for our lunch! Thanks again, Steve! I attended the Time Trial School on Feb 27th and the Autocross (AX) school on March 14th. Unfortunately, my SC is still in several boxes in the garage so I was forced to drive my Bavarian wonder. Robyn gave me nothing but grief at both schools (the BMTroubleyou is an automatic.) When it

28

was my turn to drive, my pulling up to the start grid with the A/C blowing and Wagner playing on the radio didn’t impress Robyn. With the exception of Christy Payne boiling the brake fluid on a 350Z that she was instructing in, there were no casualties. Everyone had a great time at the schools and I can’t wait to challenge Marty and Alicia’s M3 at the next AX. For the record, she whipped my tail. My best AX time was 50.005 sec. Alicia’s was 48.48 sec. The next Tech Session will be May 8th at MOTORSPORT ENGINEERING in Richardson. It will be a DIY where you can learn how to apply convertible top preservative. The Texas sun wreaks havoc on a canvas top and if you haven’t treated your top yet this year; this is an opportunity to do so. Boardwalk Porsche is offering a special price on genuine PORSCHE top preservative for sale at the Tech Session for $10.00 (normally $15). Your top needs to be clean before you apply the preservative so hit the car wash sometime during the week before you come. There will also be a demonstration on basic electrical system troubleshooting, how to use some simple tools like a test light and a multi-meter, and how to preserve the smoke in electrical devices (if you’ve ever let the smoke leak out of something electrical, you notice that it doesn’t work anymore!) There will be burgers and brats compliments of MOTORSPORT ENGINEERING. RSVP at techcorner@mavpca.org. See y’all there! Ed
