Š2011 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times.

Skilled driving wins races, but having a Porsche Certified Service and Parts department behind you is a good start. Dedicated to Porsche vehicles above all else, our staff must complete over 80 hours a year training in the latest diagnostic technology and techniques. You'll also take comfort knowing all Porsche genuine parts are factory-backed for two years when installed by Boardwalk Porsche. Better still, there is no substitute for having your vehicle serviced by professionals who not only know Porsche, but live Porsche every day.

Boardwalk Porsche would like to congratulate Denis Boulle, John Gladwill, Michael Hsu, Thomas Jones, Bernard Nussbaumer, and Greg Wallace on an impressive finish at the 48 Hours of Sebring.

elcome to the Spring season of events, fellow Mavericks, and it certainly is a busy one! Here’s what you can look forward to (and hopefully, participate in):

-Get a Grip Autocross Academy, April 9th at Texas Rangers Stadium: If you’ve never driven your beloved Porsche anywhere but on the street, here’s a great safe way for you to learn how your car can handle. You drive in a flat parking lot with only orange traffic cones as obstacles with an instructor showing you how to improve your driving skills. This IS the best way to start learning what your car (and YOU) can do! -The Bluebonnets Sunday Drive, April 10th. This is the PREMIERE Sunday driving event of the year! Join Porsches of almost every model and year as we tour the Texas roads and the beautiful Bluebonnets along the way. We’ll stop and park our “girls” in the ‘bonnets for photo opportunities. So remember to bring your camera so you can capture some of the great scenery, which will include Bluebonnets, Porsches and People! -April Drivers’ Education, April 16-17 at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson. This is typically the best-weather DE of the year: not too hot and not too cold. I hope you already signed-up since these are selling out fast. If you don’t want to drive but just want to observe, feel free to come down in your Porsche, let our own Cathy Howard at the gate know you’re a member, and come watch us on the track. Who knows? You might catch the DE fever! -Happy Hour at the Wildwood Grill, Southlake, Thursday, April 21st. Come join a bunch of us at a great local restaurant for Happy Hour, and stay for dinner like most of us do. You may want to bring your photos from the Bluebonnets Sunday Drive! -Time Trial #2 at Mineral Wells, Saturday, April 30th. Come develop your skills and improve your lap times around the course. Full instruction is available! And these are just some of the events this month. There’s also Autocross #2 on the 10th at Texas Rangers Stadium, the Lewisville lunch on the 12th and Southlake Lunch on the 28th. Did I forget to mention our Board Meeting on Wednesday the 6th!?! Hey- all members are invited (and there’s a free meal involved, too). Just RSVP to social@mavpca.org so we will know what to feed you. 2

Our 50th Anniversary Celebration. Planning has begun! Our committee was officially formed at the March board meeting, and the committee had their first meeting on March 15th. We’ve got about a dozen volunteers so far, but we’ll need more along the way. If you’d like to help in the planning and/or execution, please contact Lisa Steele at 50th@mavpca.org. They’re planning some REALLY BIG FUN!!!

Mav of the Month You know our club is run by a bunch of fun-loving AND hard-working volunteers, right? Well, there aren’t many who work harder to make sure the club keeps running than our own Treasurer, Jim Falgout. Jim pays the bills, collects the money, keeps the books, builds the budgets, and reports out at each month’s meeting: “We have money.” So for all you do, Jim, here is your well-deserved Mav of the Month award. For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Jim dinner for two at their award winning steak house. So THANK YOU, Jim, for all you do! John

y now I’m sure every one of you has had a chance to get out and enjoy your favorite ride! If you haven’t, make some plans to join the rest of us on a drive or at one of our other events. There’s a lot to choose from including Drivers’ Education, Time Trials, Autocrosses, a fabulous Saturday Tour/ Rally that looks to be out of this world (see page 10 for more details). “May @ Mayo’s” will also be coming back by popular demand, so clear your calendar and get cleaning. If you would rather go on a weekend getaway don’t forget about the Fiesta New Mexico, hosted by our neighbors to the west, the Roadrunner Region, in Sante Fe, New Mexico, which was featured in last month’s issue. There’s always something fun to do if you want to do it. By the time you read this, our 50th Anniversary Committee will have had two meetings getting us pointed in the right direction for next year’s celebration. We could still use more ideas and energy, so if you have either one of these, please come and help make our golden anniversary one that will be remembered for another fifty years. Until next month, get out and enjoy your Porsche, and make some new friends. quarter color_3.5x4.75 11/6/10 5:17 PM Page 1 “...it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

s President, John opened the meeting by reiterating the need to create a culture of inclusion, fun, and fellowship in all Maverick Region activities. He reviewed several administrative items (e.g., nominations, regional communications, meetings, etc.) relating to the 2011 Porsche Club of America (PCA) Parade in Savannah, GA. He also discussed increasing our engagement with our membership through follow up communications and potential programs for our newest members. John also shared the name of the next Maverick of the Month. Stay tuned for that! Separately, John reviewed our 50th Anniversary celebration. He suggested using the same structure as the 2004 Ft. Worth Parade. Committee objectives, structure, and responsibilities are being determined. On this point Linda Bambina shared her spirited enthusiasm and experience with previous Porsche Parades by offering to help out on the 50th Maverick Region anniversary event in 2012. As Treasurer, Jim reported that ‘we have money’ and requested budgets from the activity chairs to for 2011. For his hard work, Jim was voted the next Maverick of the Month in March 2011. How fitting, he gets the award during tax season! Richard Bradley, the managing editor of Slipstream, continues to produce an outstanding publication. Congratulations to Richard for being the February 2011 Maverick of the Month. Richard notes that if you have any photos from Maverick Region events or an article of interest for Slipstream, please contact him at editor@mavpca.org. Pat Friend noted that our advertiser finances are current. Pat also manages our name badge ordering process. So, if you are a new member, we want to recognize you at events by providing you a Maverick Region name badge. Please contact Pat at ads@mavpca.org with your name, your city, and car(s) you drive and we’ll distribute your badge to you. John Harvey and Carey Spreen described their upcoming Sunday tours and road rally. The April 10th tour features a tour of Ennis to see the Bluebonnets. The May 14th event is the Red River Derby Tour/Rally. Options include either a road rally or a driving tour. Both will end at Rancho Sereno in North Texas (www.ranchosereno.com). Looks great doesn’t it? 8

Our first Drivers’ Education event will be held in March. Mike Farrar will be serving as the equipment manager. This is Mike’s third meeting and it is great to see his enthusiasm and desire to help out Luke Edson at these events. Lisa Steele noted that the hospitality arrangements are set for the upcoming Drivers’ Education events. Hey Lisa, what’s for lunch? Continuing on the Drivers’ Education theme, Mike Brodigan noted that registration for the March Drivers’ Education exceeds 100. He also described the following new incentive. Yellow level drivers receive a 1 free event after 4 and white level receives 1 free event after 3 events. Spaces are filling up fast. Contact Mike at de@mavpca.org if you have any questions. Mike also described the recent tech sessions at Autobahn Porsche and Boardwalk Porsche. There were over 50 passionate Porschephiles in attendance. Credit Ed Mullenix and Bob Benson for great events. Cliff Blackshear also was very helpful at the event. Wendy Shoffit is serving as the acting Drivers’ Education registrar and presented several updates at the meeting. By the time you read this, registration will open for the 2011 PCA Parade in Savannah, GA and Wendy is the Parade webmaster. She described the great events at Parade and the potential to caravan there. Wendy also presented the concept of publishing Slipstream in full-color and noted that the Maverick Region directories are available at www.clubregistration.net for $5. Wendy is also updating our regional history and researching other 50th PCA Anniversary celebrations. Please contact her at wendy@ shoffit.com regarding any of the above. James Shoffit is our Zone 5 PCA representative. He recently attended the National Board meeting and shared PCA national goals: Retain and recruit new PCA members. If you know of potential PCA members please contact Joel Nannis at membership@mavpca.org. Monda Hanna described the February Happy Hour at the Fox Sports Grill in Plano. Over 50 Mavericks were there! Future events are in Slipstream or on our website. Travis Howard updated the group about the April Autocross events to be held at Rangers Ballpark Parking Lot F on April 9 and 10, 2011. To learn more, contact Travis at tt@mavpca.org. Check Slipstream or the Maverick Region website for future events. Maverick Moments. Attending this meeting were two members, Don Sebert and Charles Armstrong. Don

volunteered to write an article for Slipstream about the March Sunday tour. Charles joined the Maverick Region in 1970 and shared some excellent history about the region. Contact Christy Payne at social@mavpca.org if you would like to RSVP to attend a meeting. It is great to see new faces and get their ‘on-the-spot’ input at these meetings. Lastly, speaking of feedback, the board will survey our membership (that’s you) to determine your perceptions about our region, events, and processes. This feedback will help us to better understand your needs and expectations. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm.

Red River Derby By John Harvey, Tourmeister, Carey Spreen, Rallymeister

ome join us on Saturday, May 14, for the Red River Derby Tour and Rally! This will be a fun afternoon tour from McKinney to Rancho Sereno, north of Whitesboro near the Red River. As a bonus for the competitive, you can enter the Gimmick Rally, which will be held in parallel with the tour, although it will use a different route.

sure you followed that route, you will answer questions related to landmarks along the way. This is not a TSD (timespeed-distance) Rally, so you will not need a stopwatch, just a working odometer. The car (driver/navigator) that answers the most questions correctly, and gets closest to the official route mileage, will be the winner. A bail-out map will be included, but if you use it, you will not be scored.

The tour will begin at the Westgate Shopping Center, US 75 (Central Expressway) exit 40A, on the northbound service road. We will meet at noon, and the first Rally car out will be at 12:30pm, with the Tour group leaving after the Rally entrants have started out. From there we will wind our way through Texas horse country over some excellent “blue roads, ending up a couple of hours later at Rancho Sereno, run by former Maverick Region members Mike and Lisa Maberry.

Rancho Sereno (www.ranchosereno.com), our destination, is a 165-acre private ranch with two personalities - it is a reigning horse breeding operation as well as a Bed and Breakfast, with a 115-acre wildlife preserve thrown in for good measure.

And if you have been reading or hearing about Road Rallying, this is your chance to experience it for yourself optional of course! It will be an easy one; think of it as an Introduction to Rallying. If you elect to enter the Rally, you will need to bring a clipboard, a pencil or two, and make sure that there are at least two people in your vehicle. You will get a route sheet that tells you your route, and, to make

10 10

Our hosts at Rancho Sereno plan to give us a tour of their operation (including baby horses, of course) and then feed us afterwards, with a wine tasting to boot! To offset the cost of the barbecue, we will be charging a nominal per person fee of $15. We will shortly announce an Evite web page, where you will be able to RSVP and pay in advance. Please note that we need an RSVP from you to get an accurate head count for the meal. Drive-ups may not be able to partake in the barbecue! We expect to be finished by 7:00 PM, and the trip back to the Metroplex will take a little over an hour on main highways, although you can go back any way you like!

Thirty-two of us enjoyed Babe’s very tasty and plentiful dinner. Over dinner John said that the reason for the turnarounds and alternate route was that his GPS was telling him that the original route was incorrect and was incessantly recalculating. He decided that maybe there was a problem ahead and changed the route.

and continued north on 2331 to route 1187. There we turned east, passing through Crowley and north of Burleson en route to Mansfield where we rejoined our original route. Although it seemed much longer because of the stops and turnarounds, by my calculations the alternate route was only about 4 miles longer than the original one (not counting retracing distances).

12

In sum the glitches were really very minor and those who stuck with the program (and, I think, those who did not) had a very enjoyable first Sunday drive of the 2011 season. John and BJ are to be commended and thanked for selecting an interesting route and for all the organizational effort that is necessary for a successful drive.

Cliff’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear

T

he other day, Jason and I were returning from lunch and found ourselves stopped immediately behind a flat bed tow vehicle with a 911 on the bed in front of our workshop. A rat about 6-7 inches long (not including its tail), was running back and forth at the end of the bed. It seemed to be looking for an escape from where it was. We have seen so much rodent damage over the years that it was amazing to actually see the critter that was executing that damage, on a flatbed. If a vehicle sits for long periods of time, a creature may think it’s part of the landscape and rats, mice, squirrels etc. can sometimes view a vehicle as a place to live. Then they move in! It turns out the car had sat for a long period of time and a rodent had built an elaborate home in the engine. It stored

14

Rodent Intrusion enough food to last through the winter even though it had eaten wiring on the engine and rendered it useless. We pulled in next to the flatbed and I asked the driver if it was a no start tow in ”Yep,” he replied. We watched the rat disappear back up into the car as the tow truck stopped prior to my question. It is amazing how much damage a critter can do to a car if the car is left unattended for a long period of time. They love the taste of wire insulating material and find the engine compartment to be a great place to make a nest. Amazingly, it’s something we see quite often so please bait the area you park your car in for rodents. It can save you thousands of dollars. This time, we had to pull the engine and replace some major wire harnesses plus clean up the mess and make things right. Just Sayin!

So The Journey Begins By Cara J. Peterson

Photos by Tannia Dobbins

W

e have a slogan at work that every person has their own unique journey. My journey starts when the love of my life, Leif, purchased the car of his dreams in 2010, a 911. Since then, I have learned the meaning of a variety of terms such as “grid” (don’t park here), “996” and “PSM” (Please Save Me!) I’ve since watched my husband drive 100 miles an hour from the side lines many times. Leif loves it, he lives it and breathes it, but all the while I only watched. Finally, instead of watching I decided to dive in and see what the big deal was. I did my first Time Trial on March 19 in Mineral Wells. Tannia Dobbins was my instructor. The first thing we did was get into my car and drive a Parade lap to learn the course, probably the most important part of the day. I was driving and felt like I was really flying. It was exhilarating! Oh, but then we got in Tannia’s Boxster for a “real” lap around the course. During those 73 seconds I was gritting my teeth, screaming, holding my breath and loving every minute of it; Tannia laughing the whole way! She is an excellent driver with no fear and was by my side the remainder of the day, both on and off the track. I learned a lot in just a short period… things like “get loose” (sometimes good), “traction control” (bad), “turn in and track out” (good), “DNF” (bad) and the coveted “spin out” (you’ve pushed the car to learn the limits, good). So for all of you sideliners... get in the car, get on the gas (gas, gas, gas!) and I guarantee you will be grinning from ear to ear the whole way too!

So, what is this Parade Concours thing all about? By Cole Scrogham

T

hat title question really seems to be the most common thing asked by new Parade attendees…what is this Concours thing all about? Well, I guess it might be considered one of those questions where the answer depends on your perspective. If you have an autocross perspective, then the “Q-tippers” are slightly off their rocker and the display is just a nice way to spend the day before the autocross starts (other than the race cars on display of course!). To the Rally folks, the display is a little more palatable, but if you are going to spend that much time with your car you should at least include a few calculations to correlate the speedometer with your GPS. I’m not even going to discuss the Tech Quiz only crowd… The Concours can be as simple or as complicated as you like, from a nice display of Porsches to enjoy on a beautiful summer day to the last details of restoration perfection, and anywhere in between. The Parade Concours is the premier Concours event of the year for PCA; a truly awesome display of over 60 years of Porsche history in America and beyond. The Parade location this year is Savannah, Georgia, a charming destination city that is sure to provide you with your fill of pralines and peanuts once you have had enough of the Concours. For the first time in the Park’s history, an automotive display will be allowed on these grounds, courtesy of the 2011 Parade Concours. Porsche Club of America members will stroll the lawns and gardens festooned with possibly the finest display of Porsches in Parade history. Reds, Blues, Yellows and Blacks will add to the Green of Forsyth Park, as Porsches in all shapes and sizes converge on the grounds. The Monday event is open to the public and will be buzzing with activity all day long. Featuring over a hundred cars, the Concours will display competitive vehicles in classes, divisions and groups in four major areas: Preparation, Preservation, Restoration and Performance. The crowd favorite Historic Display should feel right at home in this location as well! And if competition is not your thing, the Corral is another possibility. Several hundred Porsches will be displayed (grouped by model) in the non-competitive Corral. To join this collection of Porsches, you just need to submit a regular entry to the Parade before registration closes…but if you can’t bring

Photos by Cole Scrogham your Porsche and want to view the Concours, just bring yourself as this event is open to the public. The four groups of cars are grouped in roughly the following criteria (memorize this to impress any innocent bystander at Forsyth Park that asks the “What’s this Concours thing all about…” question!): Preparation-This is the group comprised of mostly newer cars, they are being judged on how well prepared they are (ie-clean). There is not so much emphasis on originality as how completely free of dirt the car is, so watch out for those Q-tips! Preservation-This group is the opposite of Preparation, it is reserved for cars that have been faithfully maintained and kept original over many years, so you will see mostly older Porsches here with decades of careful care and attention. Cleanliness is not so important, but all of the original bits and pieces certainly are! Restoration-This group is made up of cars that have been restored to their original condition. This time consuming process is evaluated by experienced teams of judges, some of whom actually remember what these cars looked like when they were new! Cleanliness and originality are judged, making this group a difficult proposition for entrants, so thankfully there are cars judged in Touring (top only) and Full (top and bottom of the car is judged). Performance-This group of cars ranges from all out racers to modified street cars, most of them “personalized” to their owner’s liking. You will see a lot of variety in this group, which is judged on cleanliness only and feature highly modified and performance oriented Porsches. I hope that little refresher course on the Parade Competition Rules helps you spot the different groups at the Concours, and make more sense of the myriad of awards and trophies at the banquet. You can also browse the Porsche Corral and Historic Display for cars that are not competing, but certainly add a lot to the display. Feel free to come a day or so early and enjoy the prep area (air-conditioned!) in the convention center and see all the work that goes on behind the scenes of our Day at the Concours! Won’t you join us there? parade2011.pca.org

Member Spotlight: Stephen Muncy (and his family) Andrea Bell, Public Relations Chair his month’s new member spotlight is on Stephen Muncy (and his family). Stephen has a 1974 914 2.0. This is his first Porsche. He searched a little over two years before finding ‘the one’ for them. It is originally a Texas car that was imported in Houston and sold at a dealership in Laredo. He found it near Chicago, where it had been rescued from 15 years in a barn and partially restored by the previous owner. He was determined to turn the whole experience into an adventure, so a friend and Stephen rode Amtrak from Fort Worth to Chicago -and spent the next 2 days driving it the 925 miles back home to Texas. Since owning the car, he had it repainted and replaced the aftermarket wheels with original Fuchs 2.0 alloys. It is currently his daily driver.

T

Jennifer (his wife) and Stephen both grew up in the Texas Panhandle. He’s from Amarillo and she’s from Miami (Texas!) She is from Miami and he is from Amarillo. They were married in 1995. Jennifer is a funeral director who does independent consulting. Stephen worked for BNSF railway for 15 years. His time with the railroad has taken them from Amarillo to Dodge City, KS then Wichita, KS and now to Fort Worth. (The Muncy family moved to Keller in June, 2008.) Their daughter Berkley is 11 and has appointed herself the official co-pilot and iPod DJ of the 914. All three of them are HUGE Texas Rangers fans and go to the ballpark as much as they can. They also are very big University of Texas football fans. They enjoy traveling and are taking a cruise over spring break. Berkley sings in the choir at her school and loves to play volleyball. She will be a cheerleader in the 7th grade next year. Look for Stephen, Jennifer, and Berkley at a future event and please extend a warm Maverick welcome. 993 TT Transformation By Travis Cearley

S

o we started with a 4,400 mile, bone-stock 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo, in metallic black. Then we tore the whole car apart.

We began what the Germans call a “transformation.” That’s a pretty apt description when you go from Porsche’s superbly designed pinnacle of air-cooled performance in 3.6L form, then enlarge it to 3.8L and add a few other trick pieces along the way. Not to mention my personal favorite part, raising the boost. The teardown started by removing the engine and transmission as a unit, then securing the engine to a work stand for convenience. Next, we started peeling away layers upon layers of parts so that we could get to the heart of the matter, the engine case. Once the cylinder heads were removed, they were sent to John Day at Day Custom Engines to be machined so that the larger pistons would clear the combustion chamber, since the 993 turbo pistons actually raise out of the cylinder and into the head by about 6 millimeters or so. Since this particular build requires us to install new, upgraded connecting rods, the case must also be split. Once the cases were separated, everything was cleaned, and examined for any unusual wear. Carrillo rods were fitted with new bearings and torqued to specification while the crankshaft was bolted to a fixture secured in a vise. New bearings were also installed in the case halves for the intermediate shaft, and the oil pump was clearanced further from the factory notches for the slightly larger connecting rods. At this point, the cases were coated with flange sealant, and the cases were bolted back together, while following a specific torque sequence. 26

Photos by Mark Plummer After the core of the power plant was reassembled, it was time to file fit the rings. This procedure takes time and patience, since one wrong move means you have to start over with another new set of rings. The end gap when the rings are on the piston and installed in the cylinder are absolutely critical for such a demanding e n v i r onment. Before and after the Too much gap, transformation! and the car loses compression, too little and the rings bind under extreme heat and seize the piston in the cylinder, causing a catastrophic failure. Once this painstaking step was finished, the pistons rings were installed on their matched, forged pistons and pre-fit into the billet cylinders. Installation of the “P’s and C’s” started at the rear of the motor, one by one, and finished at the front. Now we go back to the cylinder heads At this point, the “bottom-end” has been completed and assembled. The heads have been returned from the machine shop, and it’s time to install them. The camshaft housing has been loosely bolted on after the heads are slid onto the studs, so that the dowels line up after the heads have been torqued. The head stud nuts were lubed and tightened in series, and the cam boxes were sealed and bolted down as well. The camshafts were wiggled in, and the retrofit-kit of mechanically adjusted rockers were put in place and adjusted. Old-style cam gears slide on, so that the new, upgraded cam timing can be set to a whopping 2.3 mm of lift at overlap. Once all of the basic mechanicals are set, it’s simply a matter of stacking the remaining components on in order Aside from the previously mentioned parts, the rest of

the engine build remains largely stock. The turbos, fuel pressure regulator, mufflers, and DME unit were replaced with modified units. A BMC, high-flow air filter was installed as well. Once the engine was assembled, the stronger clutch was installed and the power train was reunited and inserted into the car. An additional oil cooler was installed behind the A/C condenser on the driver side to assist with cooling the enhanced engine. Mobil One oil is the recommended oil from Porsche, and that’s the blood of choice for this particular animal. Surely, we had to get the blood pumping… We pulled the DME relay from the fuse box and cranked the engine over until we had oil pressure showing on the gauge. Then it was time to wake up the beast. We plugged the DME

Wheels and tires could not be left unnoticed, so they were replaced with a set of OZ racing wheels, and the best Michelin rubber available. Final analysis, this car rocks!!! Tasteful, yet potent. Smooth, but fierce. I heard there are some heavily modified Nissan GT-R’s that got embarrassed on the toll way… Nonetheless, this is what the 993 turbo should have been from the factory. Now, it’s a reality, watch out!

Once the new cylinder heads where in place, it’s time to start the reassemble.

relay back in, doublechecked everything, and fired it up. After a little coughing and puffing, the 3.8L lit off, and settled into a lopey idle. Great Success!!! On top of the engine upgrades, we also updated and enhanced the exterior and interior. The black stitching was replaced throughout with red, by Johnny Saunders of Exclusive Auto, who works directly behind our shop at RAC Performance. We also replaced the stock seats with factory Porsche Sport seats, with red stitching, and seat backs painted to match the exterior of the car. The interior was finished out with red seatbelts, and a set of red-faced gauges, along with Turbo S door panel inserts and a full carbon interior set from Porsche. The gear shifter was replaced with a carbon fiber knob, and to top the interior off, a carbon and leather steering wheel with red stitching replaced the old unit. The only exterior modifications were a Turbo S front lip spoiler, and a set of April 27

A DE (Drivers’ Education) is high speed spirited driving that puts stress on the brakes and suspension that are not normally encountered in every-day driving. I had the pleasure several years ago of driving a 3.2 liter Carrera in Germany and down through the Italian Alps. At that time there were several sections of the Autobahn that didn’t have speed limits. Spending most of my time in the passing lane was an experience like no other. Here in the “flatlands” where one rarely gets to exceed the posted speed statute, it is still exciting to “mash the right pedal to the floor” even if only briefly. Motoring along on the Autobahn at 250 kph (more than 140 mph!) was a joy and knowing that any curves were well marked and were designed to be taken at high speed (no 40 kph hairpins) made it that much better. I enjoy the thrill of driving fast, but I prefer to do it somewhere where I stand a good chance of surviving the event. Taking our Porsches to venues like Eagles Canyon or MotorSport Ranch is absolutely the appropriate place to experience the capabilities of our cars. Prior to my “all expense paid vacation” to Iraq in 2003, my shop was located in McKinney. I recall working on a customer’s 930 that would misfire at 140-150 mph. I performed the repairs that I thought would cure the problem and took the car up on Highway 380 to test the results. Then McKinney was a pastoral setting with only the occasional State Trooper running radar. I made a low speed run to check for local DPS activity and after finding none, started my high speed run. As I shifted through the gears with my right foot firmly shoved to the floor, I reflected how the small rolling hills and passing power line poles along the road took on a different perspective at 140 mph! I also remembered having seen humongous John Deere four wheel drive tractors pulling twin 20 row harrows that took up both driving lanes and 28

Photo from Pelican Parts the shoulder while motoring along at 25 mph. Were I to encounter such, as I crested the next hill, I most certainly would not have been able to stop in time. I lost my nerve and slowed down. The goal in life is to be “seriously old and wrinkled when you die.” My thoughts were that I was neither old nor wrinkled enough yet! This brings us back to the present AND our tech inspection sheet. The club is experimenting with the “self-inspection” concept for those drivers who would like to be able to sign the “inspected by” line on the inspection sheet. The program is still in work. At present, the Executive Committee, Safety Committee, and the Tech Committee, are all in agreement to permit those drivers in the “Yellow or White” experience groups to selfinspect should they feel competent to do so. Several enthusiastic “Blue” group drivers’ have expressed interest in self-inspection as well. At present, my suggestion would be to exercise a little patience while we “work the kinks out!” First and foremost is the safety of all of the participants. One of our members offered up the idea of a “Tech Logbook” similar to the drivers’ logbook. We’re considering how to implement something like that. Training someone about what to look for and how to prepare or correct discrepancies on one’s car is not something that is achieved in one three hour tech session. Several members have extensive experience working on their own cars and have invested lots of money in tools and equipment. Mark and Monda H, who at last count have five Porsches, have an automotive lift in their garage. James S, our current Zone 5 Rep, has no reservations about disassembling his 915 transaxle trackside. For those contemplating becoming qualified to self-inspect, talk with other club members who share the enthusiasm for greasy fingernails and the occasional loss of skin on their knuckles. Obtain a repair manual and invest in some tools that will allow you to perform the tasks required to prepare your car for the track. Prepare your car as well as you possibly can and then present it to a qualified repair facility to see if you missed anything. All three Porsche Dealers in the Metroplex, Autobahn, Boardwalk, and Park Place, as well as RAC Performance, Zim’s, Mayo’s, Fifth Gear, and Motorsport Engineering, perform complimentary tech inspections. I would call one of these club supporters to arrange an appointment. Ed
