F

IFTY YEARS YOUNG.

That’s what your Maverick Region is, with our official anniversary on December 24, 2012. As our fiftieth year celebrations get underway (Saturday, April 28th: a car from each year at Texas Motor Speedway), we are now getting items shipped to us from the national Porsche Club. Our first gift pack included our special commemorative window decals with the PCA logo and the “50th Anniversary - Maverick - est. 12/24/62” around the outside. These are FREE to you, so see me or Christy Payne and get one on your car to show your pride! The second package was a 50th Anniversary banner, similar to the window decals. The third package just arrived this week. It included two plaques commemorating our anniversary AND a binder with copies of our original charter! (I guess I’m not the only one who never throws anything away.) It was most interesting to read the charter and the purposes of the club. Here’s purpose #1: “To promote the highest standard of courtesy and safety on the road.” Very interesting! Methinks we need to “reinvigorate” that purpose... not through a training course, but just through awareness. I’m sure it happens to all of us from time to time: someone else is discourteous on the road and it upsets our day. How do we react? Does our human nature make us “tighten-up” the space between our car and the one in front of us so that no one else can “cutin”? Or do we contain our emotions and realize that the “discourteous person” is in the minority and we should set a better example? Hard 2

to do sometimes, but if we’re going “to promote the highest standard of courtesy and safety on the road,” we probably need to go with choice “b.” One of the leaders at a previous employer sent out a poster to every branch. It read: Courtesy is contageous...Catch it! Good advice.

Mav of the Month Like many organizations these days, we’ve been challenged by financial constraints that are more evident than in years past. So after going through all the emotional reactions, we started to figure that we needed more facts! One of our region’s long-time leaders took the bull by the horns and gathered the financial information from sources present and past and put it all together for us so we could see where our challenges were and make educated decisions on how and where to cut expenses or adjust programs. Over the past two months James Shoffit has dug into all the financials for the past five years and developed trend data that has given us the ability to

make the adjustments to keep us financially viable. This took a lot of time, persistance and hard work. So James: we’re ecstatic to award you as our newest Maverick of the Month with a gift card to the Silver Fox restaurant in Grapevine. Thank you, James. You always have, and you continue to make a huge impact on our Maverick region!

N

ow that I am getting settled in as Slipstream editor, my next task is to update our contact information. In particular I would like to draw your attention to the page on your left, the listing of Board Officers and Chairs. If you spot anything that you know is incorrect, outof-date, or missing, please email me at editor@mavpca.org. You may also notice that there are a couple of empty photo frames. One of them is because Pat Heptig, our Club Race Co-Chair, is so new that I have not had a chance to get his photo yet. But another empty photo frame

also has no actual name associated with it - all it says is “Your Name.” This is our “subtle” invitation to you to consider taking part in the operation or management of the Region. You don’t have to be a long-time or well-known member, and you don’t necessarily need to have experience in a particular area. For instance, our Secretary, Madhu Rao, first joined the club in 2009, participated in a few events (Round-Up and Sunday Drives to name a couple), and the next thing he knew, he was being asked to run for Club Secretary, and the rest is history. If you were to ask Madhu about his experience so far, I think he would tell you that he has been exposed to the inner workings and little-known details

about how our events are put on, even before he has entered them. As shown on page 31 of this issue, Maverick Region has over 2000 primary and affiliate members, and any of them are eligible to volunteer for an office or position. If you have attended any of our events, be they social or competitive, we hope that you enjoyed them. But we also wonder if you have thought of ways to make them more interesting or more fun or more competitive or perhaps less expensive. If so, getting your idea heard is as easy as contacting the appropriate person listed on page 4. And if you would like to take the next step and have your name and photo listed there, we could make that happen too! Read on!

Maverick Minutes By Brendan Eagan, Guest Scribe Editor’s Note: Region Secretary Madhu Rao was unable to make it to the March board meeting. He appreciates the support of Brendan Eagan, who served as scribe for the evening.

P

resident John Hamilton kicked off the meeting promptly at 1900. The large attendance was noted. This was probably the largest group I’ve seen in the two years I’ve been attending. Several guests were introduced including M.L. Speer and repeat visitor Rob Adams. Mike Brodigan will be stepping down as Drivers’ Ed chair after the June 1-day event. He commented that younger faces were needed in the club and in these roles. Mike’s passion and leadership will be missed. The Region’s new Publicity Chair, with links to Panorama (Na (National), was announced as Linda Bambina, with a round of applause. John showed a notebook delivered from National with original documents and letters from 1962 that were used to establish the Maverick Region – 50 YEARS ago. Highlighted to the group was one of the founding tenets: To promote the highest standard of courtesy and safety on the road. “We’ll see more about this in the future,” quipped John. The Porsche Parade (Salt Lake City, July 8-14, 2012) has extended the awards nomination deadline. Few award nominations have been received, but our Region looks to be in a good position to win a few! Noted by Wendy Shoffit, later in the meeting, was that participant Web registration for the National Parade would be delayed due to technical issues – server crashes. 8

Money and finances were next with John detailing that our club continues to be cash challenged. Part of the issue is regarding cash flow. Funds are required, up front, to reserve the tracks and other venues for events later in the year. The fees from participants aren’t collected until much later in the year and this contributes to the squeeze. The club has eaten away our cash cushion and all club sections will have to be more frugal. One highlighted area was to for the board to look for ways to increase revenues. Kudos in absentia for Keith Olcha who’s secured more funding from the local dealers. If you’ve not noticed the club raffle – take note. Maverick Region is raffling a trip to Germany. TickTick ets are $50 and your chances of winning are stunningly good – at least compared to the Texas lottery! Only 300 tickets will be sold. The primary contact is Christy Payne, but you’ll see information on the website also. Any sales beyond 100 tickets (and we’re nearly there) will help with revenue for the club and donations to our charity – the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. Concours Chair Jack Griffin spoke next and committed to an article in an upcoming spring Slipstream edition. Two events were highlighted: Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s (Euless) and Autos in the Park in June (Dallas). Jack is also planning a PCA Tech Session on how to detail a Porsche. Mike Brodigan said the March DE looks good from a financial standpoint. The April DE needs more attendees as the event is more expensive with MotorSport Ranch’s 3.1-mile track being rented (Cresson). Mike has three initiatives for DEs this year: promotion

March 7, 2012 to increase participation; improved quality; cutting costs. Pat Heptig is working the promotion angle and is giving the BMW club a chance to bring their drivers to PCA DEs. It’s a two-way street and we’re looking at how to participate with their DEs. Consideration is being given for a 2013 event – a “Germany” DE, using both clubs and publications to attract drivers. Jim Buckley and Bill Miller were next on the docket and had a presentation with PPT and videos. The topic was DE changes: promopromo tion of the events and quality. One promotion idea was to have videos of the event to help new DE parpar ticipants know what to expect. This includes a video of the morning arrival, signing in at the gate, padpad dock parking, and walking to the meeting rooms. It would be specific to each of our locations and help lessen in the anxiety of first-time participants. The quality angle is aimed at upgrading and standardstandard izing the instructor’s role - it will transition to more of a driving coach. Instructors will be training on everything from how to first inin teract with new students and all the way through in-car instruction. The demo videos Bill and Jim presented were top-notch and professionally edited. Their work and efforts were well receieved and were seen as a positive step for moving our DEs up a notch. Next discussions, after the March DE, will be funding for equipment, professional editing, and post-production. Lastly, Jim has been in discussions with the Lone Star Region (Houston) and how they run DE. Lone Star’s DE is healthy and profitable. They are eager to work with us thanks to Jim’s discussions with them. Vice President Tom Minnella reported that he’s sorting his way

that the break even point for the Germany trip was 100 tickets, and we are close to that point now. She also announced that the club will need a new Social Chair. Christy has served admirably in that position for three years and has created a very organized program. Please contact John Hamilton at president@mavpca.org if interested.

through the insurance forms and requirements for the various events. Jim Buckley is also working the Club Race for this year. There are many open positions for volunteers. Interested? Please contact Jim! The race will be at MotorSport Ranch on Oct 27-28, 2012. Tech Session Chair Ed Mullenix gave a thumbs-up for the RAC Performance Tech Session in February. Ed is brainstorming for another Tech Session and May 19 looks good. The “Tops Treatment” for Boxsters & Cabriolets, preparing them for the merciless summer sun, was a success two years back and is a candidate for a repeat performance. Al Silva had great news of finding a 2012 sponsor for Autocross and Time Trial series. This will help Al as he works to secure a venue closer to the DFW area. While there are a lot of positives for using Mineral Wells, the distance does keep participants away. Al is very passionate about increasing participation and an in-city location will be huge. Brendan Eagan reviewed the upcoming March 18 Sunday Drive from the Meacham / Lake Worth area out to NW of Fort Worth, arriving at the Vintage Flight Museum, and ending up at Joe T Garcia’s in Cowtown. Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey reviewed two future drives. The Bluebonnet Drive will be a repeat of last year’s route and will be on April 29. The May Drive will work to dovetail into an Autocross introduction. Noted was that our Rally Meister has retired. The club needs a new one. Please contact John or Carey Spreen!

Happy Hour Chair Mike Farrar, with an ear-to-ear grin, reported a great turnout at the Ruggeri’s Happy Hour. Mac’s in Colleyville is next and we’re hoping for an equally enthusiastic turnout. Mike is aiming for Fort Worth to have one of the summer Happy Hours and Joe T Garcia’s is a strong “maybe” at this point. Mike is also coordinating a car show benefiting the charity My Possibilities to be held at Boardwalk Porsche in Plano on April 15. Linda Bambina reports that she’s gotten commitments for cars to be in the 50th Anniversary photo shoot from every year in our Region’s 50 years of existence, except 1980 and 1981. Have one? Please contact Linda! The photo shoot is on April 28 at the “50 Years of Porsche” Car Show. See the calendar on our website for more details. Wendy Shoffit let us know that a new design for the Maverick website is coming courtesy of Denny Payne.

Lisa Steele let us know that budget cuts are affecting DE – coffee and donuts will disappear. Membership is strong at 2082 with 66 renewals. Of the 26 non-renewals, several have been contacted and are “re-upping,” having just overlooked the renewal notice. Great news for our membership strength. The club board is also reaching out to new members with a welcoming phone call, answering questions, and helping get them involved with our activities – a great personal touch. James Shoffit told us the club has had no CDs in the bank as “cushion” since 2004. Club money losses started in 2008 with DE being a noted loss leader. This is a large reason for the reemphasis on quality, promotion and changes in the DE program. AX/TT School Coordinator Robyn Howard added to Al Silva’s information, noting that the Autocross and Time Trial sponsor is Mayo Performance. Pat Friend was commended for sending a note that all receivables were in. Applause! Treasurer Jim Falgout said checks were out to the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. He read a letter expressing heartfelt gratitude from them. He also noted that checks were out to cover rental of the tracks for this year’s DE events. Adjourned at 2040.

C

harlie Davis. What a Maverick.

worthy of “Panorama” publication, or at least an extraordinary poster for your garage wall or ceiling!

He has been an active Maverick member for a bit more than 42 of the region’s 50 years. He epitomizes the idea of a Maverick (individualist; rebel; nonconformist) more than most, and he certainly epitomizes the concept of “active” more than most. As an engineer/”frustrated physicist,” risk-taker, major geek, inventor, photographer, out-of-thebox thinker, envelope pusher, he has been infusing these personality traits, plus his talents, interests and enthusiasm into our club for over four decades. And all the while he encouraged others to try new ideas of their own for more unique activities than you would believe, all in an effort to keep interest high and needs met as our club has continued to go, go and grow!

Christy Payne has created another amazing ad for this upcoming once-in-a-lifetime event. Please read all the details on page 14.

One of our newest members, Valerie Fitzau, had only visited with him a little bit at the All Member Party but had this incredibly astute observation: “In Porsche model years, Charlie is a classic.”

As a follow-up to last month’s sample listing of Mavericks who have made contributions at the National level, here is some more about our folks who were or are part of the National Club Racing staff: Michael Wingfield

Speaking of Porsche model years, I hope you are planning on joining us for Maverick’s HISTORICAL 50 Years of Porsche Car Show and Photo Shoot at Texas Motor Speedway on April 28. Focusing on the “people” part of our motto, I have contacted/invited former Maverick club Presidents, Slipstream editors, Selcer Award winners, Zone leaders, elected officers, and other exceptional club contributors of all kinds over Maverick’s many, many years to bring their cars for this almost all-day shoot. The response has been astonishing.

Concours d’Elegance 2012 By Jack Griffin, Concours Chair

T

his time of the year we think of getting our cars in shape for the many opportunities for sharing (what we call showing off!) the results of countless hours of polishing, shining, waxing, and making our cars look as nice as we possibly can. We will have our own Concours events as well as other very nice local, regional, and national level Concours events posted on our calendar from time to time. In addition to our annual Concours at Mayo Performance (this year dubbed “Cinco de Mayo at Mayos” in honor of the date that it falls on), and “Autos in the Park” at the Cooper Aerobic Center, we will post on our calendar many of the nice shows in the area

that will allow us to show our cars along with other marques. Most of the shows use the “People’s Choice” method of judging and awarding of trophies. However, we will also do a few events using critical judging. People’s Choice judging is when the participants merely vote on their favorite car in a particular class. This method is a very low-key type of event and gets everyone involved in the selection of winners. The critical judging method is a little more serious in that we will have a team of experts who will very carefully examine each car for its cleanliness and degree of “perfection” in various areas of scrutiny. The Porsche Parade Concours d’Elegance is a very serious critical judging event where judges examine every square inch of a car for perfection and authenticity. Our

events will only focus on paint, wheels, engine bay, interior, and trunk areas. No reaching under the car in search of a speck of dust! We all find, regardless of whether a car wins a first place trophy or not, that the benefits of getting our cars in the absolute top possible condition is reward in itself that is immeasurable. Your Porsche will thank you for the extra attention it is receiving and will reward you with many compliments about how nice it looks. Plus, you’ll meet many other nice Mavs and learn the best ways to care for your Porsche and make it look as great as it runs. From time to time we will be putting on seminars which will feature detailing experts who will show the best ways to make our cars shine and look great. Ever notice how much better your car runs when it is freshly washed and detailed? Finally, we will also post on the calendar the many car gatherings in the area, which are not judged contests but social occasions to “share” your beautiful car with others. Cars & Coffee, which occurs the first Saturday of each month, regularly attracts over a thousand cars of various brands and vintages. So start preparing your Porsche to enjoy a year of great events that will highlight the cosmetic aspects of our favorite Porsche models.

March Drivers’ Ed at Eagles Canyon Raceway Photos by Linda Bambina

Editor’s Note: The first Maverick Region Drivers’ Education event of 2012 took place on March 10 and 11 at Eagles Canyon Raceway. Due to publication deadlines, there was not enough time to include an article, but we wanted to show you some photos of that wet weekend. Yes, these events go on rain or shine, and you can be sure that you learn a lot about the importance of being smooth when you’re driving on a wet track! If you haven’t attended a DE, you owe it to yourself and to your Porsche to try it out. Many thanks to Autobahn Porsche, who sponsored this event!

“Got My Mojo Workin’ ” By John Harvey, Bad-to-the-Bone-Tourmeister

A

nybody that remembers this song, popularized by Muddy Waters, knows that it is good to have a Mojo. My earliest memory of the whole Mojo concept has to be the “Lucky Rabbit’s Foot” that every kid my age needed in the late 50’s. I found out later that it only worked if you had a ’55 Chevy with a lift kit, Cragar S/S mags and a Hurst shifter. Since that time I’ve always had a Mojo of some sort for all the activities that Beej and I do. How do you think we’ve lived this long? For the last several years, I’ve adopted the “Lucky BoneHead Socks” as my official Mojo and have put them to use quite effectively. How I acquired this particular pair is a different story. Did you know that if you are wearing these socks that you can do a wheelie, on your mountain bike, off of a three foot rock ledge onto a boulder strewn trail and only break three ribs? I was lucky I didn’t puncture a lung and was able to ride back to the car so that I could drive myself to the hospital. Most recently, I unleashed the power of the Lucky Bone-Head Socks at the February “Love Your Porsche” Tech Session. I admit that it was a little unfair to those of you that didn’t bring your Mojo in time

for the raffle drawing, but hey, I’ll bet you will remember next time. After warning everyone that I was wearing my lucky socks and that I would probably win the raffle, there were still those who stood there in disbelief as Christy drew my name out of the hat. It gives a whole new meaning to the term “Shock and Awe.” My reward was a 3M Clear Bra installation, provided by Stratashield Custom. Houston Orona Jr. and his crew worked their magic in getting that flat sheet of clear plastic to conform to the curvatures of my Boxster’s front end. This is a real art and nothing short of miraculous. Hans Hoffman and the bunch from RAC Performance provided a nice dry place to meet as well as some delicious pastries to munch on while we watched the install. By the way, that wonderful sound from the FVD/Brombacher exhaust on my Boxster was courtesy of Hans and my checkbook. Thanks to Scott Boyd and Office Perks for providing the hot java that we all enjoyed while mingling and looking at all of the cool cars in the shop. As usual, our Maverick team of Christy Payne, Lisa Steele, Linda Bambina, and Ed Mullenix put together another great event with over 65 attendees. It was a great day especially for the Harvey family who will enjoy many miles of paint-chip-free driving while planning our future Sunday Drives.

Cliff ’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear

O

n January 31st at around 7:50 in the morning I had one of those dreaded brain dead moments. Something I have not suffered through for quite some time. Come on, ya know what I mean. Did something so stupid it seems like you are in a dream after you realize what you have done. It was less than 24 hours before I was gonna be boarding a plane heading for Sebring. I was already very emotionally wound up about going. Had loaded Thomas Jones up with track gear which he had transferred to a transporter with his car and now needed to be sure I had all else in place. So I stopped to fill the commuter rat with Diesel and have it ready to be parked at the airport for a few days. It had about ¼ tank of fuel. Filled it up, bleary eyed and barely out of bed at 7:50 in the morning. Hung up the filler nozzle and realized I had just pumped a little over 8 gallons of 93 octane gas into my Diesel. I went from barely mentally awake to 5th stage afterburner in about 1 microsecond. Stood there staring at “Satan’s Fuel Delivery Vessel” for about 20 seconds while it produced a receipt. Got back in the car and just sat there. My technician brain was starting to go to work on the problem. Immediate tow? To where? The shop was 60 miles away. Would not get there til probably 11:00 am if lucky. Tow home 0.9 miles away? Then what? I needed to be at work ASAP. There were cars there and techs there that I needed to get with, do my job...hummmm. I realize there is enough Diesel 20

in fuel filter and lines to drive home on if I am careful. Hit the drive, shut it down and get the fuel out of tank before it gets to pick up, lines, filter, injection pump, injectors, combustion chambers. Found myself pulling out the cell and calling a Porsche engineer I know in Atlanta. He is in charge of all investigations of engine transmission issues with Porsches in the USA, plus fuel samples and oil samples all go to his attention. He answers and I start out the conversation with: “Left field question for 2012!” Now we have known each other for near a decade. So he is used to my abstract phone calls. I explain the situation including the fact that an immediate “combat terrain, meatball surgery resolution” is my only option. I have no time to take care of this in a precise and exacting way. The resolution has to be “down and dirty” and it has to work. There is a pause on his end. Then he says “OK, the Diesel is lying at the bottom of the tank as it is so much more dense. Drive home gingerly to avoid transit intermix as much as possible. You have about a three to one ratio of gasoline to Diesel which won’t work with that compression ratio.” His words are calming and I know what to do as he continues: “Put a hose down the filler neck and only penetrate the gas. Figure it out. How far down to the Diesel. Then start siphoning it off. Get the ratio as close to 8 to 1 with Diesel as you can figure it.” So home I drive. Carefully shutting the engine off and coasting several times. Hit the drive, run in and grab my son’s car. Go to work. Get things wrapped up and leave a couple hours early. I am in no mood to arrange an alternate ride to the air-

port. I want my car drivable. That is just me. I made the mistake and I wanted a seriously rapid resolution. It was a mission to make happen. My son had classes the next day and the rest of the week so his ride was out of the question. My daughters were both unavailable for a ride to and from the airport so here we go. During the work day my engineer friend calls me back. He had discussed my situation with another engineer at Porsche that I nicknamed “The Mad Scientist” many years ago. This guy is so out there in his thought processes that sometimes it is hard to have a conversation with him. He is amazing. Anyway I’m told he wanted me to be sure and understand just how gasoline reacts compared to Diesel under heat compression ignition process. If I get the ratio wrong my engine is gonna be toast. “ROGER THAT!” Get home and have my friend Gary at the ready to help and observe. Gary is also traveling to Sebring with me and is there to help. We establish what we believe is the depth of the fuel on top of what is mostly Diesel near the bottom of the tank and start the siphoning process. Had a pump to use to start the gas siphoning from the tank and it immediately failed to work. So I had to use the old fashioned method. Mouthful of fuel a couple times got the draining process stated. AAAArrrggghhh. Next back to “Satans Fuel Delievery Vessel.” This time I used the Diesel filler nozzle. We immediately got out on the street and started weaving lane to lane at maximum grip levels mixing the fresh Diesel with the questionable leftovers in the tank. Then drove down 377 all the way to MSR and busted a U-turn. Headed

back to the barn with no issues other than the engine felt down on power and throttle response. Came back from Sebring and drove home. Started back to work routine and noticed the engine was cranking extra long when restarted hot. Ran out the fuel load all the way to low fuel warning light. Refilled and started commute home. About five miles into the drive she

came alive. I have a special map on my fuel microprocessor that was installed by our guy that writes all our programs for special cars. It kicked back in with all its intended glory. At the end of today several of the techs in our shop and I were sitting in my office just discussing all things automotive and one of the guys asked how my fuel debacle was going. We ended up laughing

at my idiotic mistake and then the fact that being able to confer with engineers from one of the foremost automotive engineering companies on the planet looking for a resolution was just so odd and unusual. It was a golden moment. You called who??? Damn that’s funny...

February Happy Hour at Ruggeri’s Text and Photos By Mike Farrar

F

ebruary’s Happy Hour was at Ruggeri’s Italian Kitchen in Dallas (not Plano, as thought by some members with very confused GPS units). We had a great turnout with 50 people, and almost everyone stayed for dinner. Unlike last month, we had no highway closures due to trucks running into (unmarked?) bridges so everyone arrived before dinner ended! Judging by the comments I received, dinner was a hit. The stuffed shrimp received several compliments, as well as the sole. Tom even complimented the house Cabernet.

Jerry and Myra Sutton, Barbara Kauffman, and Lady and Bob Waddell browse a photo album while waiting for the food to arrive I could tell by the sound level that everyone was enjoying conversation. The Maverick Club finally turned out the lights at 10:30. I will work on reserving parking spots for the December Happy Hour which will return to Ruggeri’s Italian Kitchen. Remember, Dallas, not Plano!

Randy Csanadi describes something big to John Hamilton and Mark Hanna

Some members from Fort Worth have suggested that we venture further west than Grapevine, so the Happy Hour hosts are evaluating an event at Joe T. Garcia’s in the Fort

Worth Stockyards area. Hopefully with spring approaching, we can find a spot by the pool to sip on margaritas while pondering the menu choices: “Will I go with #1 or #2?” My memory predates getting a choice; back then it was #1 or nothing. Sometimes they even let you choose your drink, but if you did not have cash you had better have brought something of value. We will give you more details as soon as possible. If you would like to recommend a location please email me at hh@mavpca.org. We are always on the lookout for new Happy Hour locations!

Advertiser of the Month: Laurie Wirth, Realtor By Laurie Wirth

F

rom the time I could drive, I dreamed of some day owning a Porsche. That dream became a reality about a year ago when I became the ecstatic owner of a silver Porsche Cayenne S. I’d only had that dream car about 3 months when I was T-boned by a Hummer H2 traveling at 45 mph. Although my Cayenne had to be totaled out, my daughter and I walked away without a scratch. That was more than the driver of the Hummer could say - the H2 didn’t fare too well. I was sold. I decided that, if for no other reason than safety (who am I kidding safety was only an excuse), I would own nothing else but a Porsche. After searching for just the right

replacement, I decided on a black Cayenne GTS. I love that vehicle! My rationale? Not only do I get to work faster, but also my clients look good in the car! I’m a residential realtor with Keller Williams Realty. As a Frisco homeowner for the past nine years, and with my office in Plano, I know the area. North Texas is a great place to buy and sell real estate! I work with buyers, sellers and lease clients who are looking for homes from the low $100k range to the millions. Porsche-love isn’t much different than falling in love with just the right home. For me there’s nothing more satisfying than helping home owners buy just the right home, or sell their current home.

Member Spotlight: Bill Conn By Lisa Steele, Membership Chair

O

Lorie was involved in SCCA in Michigan when this couple met. Being in the Detroit area in the late 80s, Bill and Lorie had the opportunity to see Formula 1 and CART races up close. Besides being a driving enthusiast, Bill also has two Weimaraner dogs and loves gadgets, especially Android phones.

ur New Member Spotlight this month is on Bill Conn, who recently purchased his first Porsche. He decided to go BIG, too, because he bought a black 2010 Cayman. This beauty only had 8,000 miles on the odometer but I have a feeling that Mr. Conn will add some more track miles very soon.

Bill has already completed his first DE in his new car at Texas World Speedway. “Years ago I did a number of driver education events with my M3. Now I get a chance to do some in a Porsche.”

Bill has been married to his lovely wife, Lorie, for almost 25 years. Their son is working on a PhD in Chemical Engineering at Rice University in Houston. The Conn family has been in the DFW area since 1989 when they moved from the Ann Arbor area of Michigan.

Because the weather at TWS was cold and wet, all cars were required to have a tow hook installed so they could be towed out of the mud. Fortunately, Bill never strayed from the pavement and was checked out

Bill in front of his car in the paddock on a chilly Sunday morning at TWS to drive Blue Solo by his last session of the weekend. WAY TO GO!! Please give a big Maverick WELCOME to Bill and Lorie Conn. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT” feature, please contact me at membership@ mavpca.org.
