The name has changed, but the dedication remains. We are proud to announce that Boardwalk Porsche is now officially Porsche of Plano. We may have changed the name out front, but our dedication to providing our clients with the highest service remains constant. It is always a proud moment for our team when our work translates to success on the track, and we would like to congratulate our friends at Magnus Racing for a great showing at Circuit of the Americas while making their first podium appearance in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series GT class. It was our pleasure to aid them in the preparation of the car the week before.

Proven performance in the workshop or at the track, at Porsche of Plano, it is our passion.

Drifting: Sunday Drives - a Great Way to Enjoy your Porsche By John Hamilton, Region President

M

y wife Chris and I participated in the March 3 Sunday drive, which started in Garland and ended at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison. After that we joined many Drive participants at a local restaurant for a snack and to re-live our day. We had a great time getting to meet Mavericks whom we hadn’t met before, and catching up with many of our old friends whom we hadn’t seen since last fall’s Sunday Drive. So what else is so great about a Sunday drive? • You get to see sights in Texas that you may never have seen before • You get some fun “windshield time” with your significant other or friend, away from all the worries of our busy lives • By the end of the day, you feel that “good kind of tired” • It’s a non-threatening environment where you can participate as much or as little as you want • You get to check out 40, 50 or 60 other great Porsches! And... you get to DRIVE your Porsche on some fun back roads! KUDOs to the entire team of people who work so hard

to map the routes, pre-drive them multiple times, then lead us on the drives. Our Tourmeister, John Harvey, has done a fabulous job of leading a team of people who make this all happen for the rest of us. So the next time you see a Sunday Drive scheduled, clear your calendar, jump in the old Porsche, and head out for a great afternoon. I hope you’ll join us!

Mav of the Month

ALEXIS A. V. CAMPBELL, Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051

Sometimes our best volunteers just come out of the crowd and decide to jump in where needed on-the-spot. Such is the case this month with our Maverick of the Month.

For the March 3 Drive, she volunteered to go on the pre-drive to make sure the roads were okay; then volunteered to be a “sweep” (person who drives at the back of the pack in case anyone gets offcourse); then when 8 of 11 cars drove in the wrong direction, she chased them down and got them back on course; and when three more went in the wrong direction, she chased them down as well, and all of this with a smile on her face. So our well-deserving Mav of the Month is Kristyn Starr! So thank you and congratulations, Kristyn. Enjoy you gift card to the Silver Fox Steakhouse!

W

ell, it’s official -- Maverick Region, Lone Star Region, and Hill Country Region have gotten together to sponsor the first ever PCA Club Race at the Circuit of the Americas Formula One track near Austin. It will take place on Mother’s Day Weekend, May 10-12. The schedule will also include a Drivers’ Education event for solo drivers only, with first preference being given to drivers from the three sponsoring regions. Club Race registration opened on March 25, but DE registration opens April 10. Other events to watch out for over the next couple of months are our traditional May at Mayo’s car show

and dinner, held at Mayo Performance in Euless on May 4, and something new in June - a Summer Kick-Off Picnic on Saturday, June 8. May at Mayo’s will feature a showand-shine Concours with no entry fee -- just wash your Porsche and show it! Dinner, catered by On The Border, will be $25 per person (free for kids 12 and under). Soft drinks, beer, and margaritas included! Concours staging will begin at 4pm with Peoples’ Choice voting starting at 5, followed by dinner at 6 and the award presentation at 7. There will be activities for the kids, as well. Visit http://mav. pca.org/Events/Calendar.asp to register for this always fun event. And we are trying a new twist on a classic theme for June, with the Summer Kick-Off Picnic. Taking

place on Saturday, June 8, it is planned to include a Gimmick Rally leading to the location, burgers and hot dogs from the grill (bring your own side dish or dessert), as well as some of the traditional Father’s Day activities that we have held in past years. This event is still in the planning stages, but keep an eye on our on-line calendar for more details. And for those of you who enjoyed the Sunday Drive to Rancho Sereno in 2011, Sunday Drivemeister John Harvey and crew will be reprising that drive on Sunday, May 5, the day after May at Mayo’s. But check out this issue to see what’s happening in April. There is something for everybody - autocross/time trial, Drivers’ Ed, a Sunday Drive, and Happy Hour. Read on!

Maverick Minutes: February Board Meeting By Renee Farinella, Region Secretary

T

he board meeting started at 7:02pm. Region President John Hamilton welcomed the 21 volunteers in attendance, noting that all budget projections were received. Social Chair Tracy Robertson, who did a post-event report of the Annual New / All Member event, which was held January 26; feedback was provided through PunchBowl and Facebook. We will be disseminating requests for more member-centric facilities to be used for events like the Holiday and Member Parties. John would like to have better geographical balance, relative to where our membership is primarily concentrated. Slipstream Editor Carey Spreen was up next, and said that he completed the National Newletter Award submissions to PCA, having chosen the June and July 2012 issues; June was an especially strong one. Keeping our fingers crossed to win again! Sunday Drive Tourmeister John Harvey determined that assigning drivers to groups, which he called the “Cows” and “Curves,” worked well -- ongoing refinement is anticipated. Gareth added that the staggering of the groups was helpful, so they did not bunch up. April’s Drive is the Intro to Drivers’ Education at MotorSport Ranch, which John is planning with DE Chair Lori Mauthe. Texas Import Sales would like to sponsor a Drive, perhaps paying for dinner at Ranch Sereno in conjuction with the May Sunday Drive. They would also like for their team to participate in the Drive. 6 April

John said this is great, as long as they join the club! Glen Barnett with Ft Richardson State Park, near Jacksboro, invited us to tour his facility as a possible Sunday Drive destination. John will begin to plan this for autumn 2013. John Hamilton mentioned that Don Sebert has expressed interest in putting on rallies! Membership Co-Chair Tom Froehlich knew Don from the Kansas City Region, where Don was a member for about 30 years! John Hamilton suggested that Don work with George Luxbacher, who has also expressed interest in putting on rallies. Treasurer Jim Falgout distributed our eight-page financials for the past year, which are categorized by activity and show a net plus of over $46,000. We received our quarterly subsidy from PCA, and we still have a lot of advertisers that have not paid. Jim will get with Advertising Manager Pat Friend. One DE sponsorship from September was not received, due, we think in part, to transitioning activities. Rick Robinson, our new Sponsorship Chair, began an inquiry and suggestion to review reimbursement processes. We need to do better at billing 30, 60, 90 days in arrears, etc… John Hamilton asked for a better way to handle that. An escalation process was determined best in the discussion. Tech Session Chair Ed Mullenix mentioned that there were no tech sessions scheduled so far. John Hamilton said that he learned from the Region Presidents’ meeting last month that Porsche Cars North America now has brochures on how to run a tech session. We could present this to dealers as well, to sponsor tech sessions.

February 6, 2013 Driver Education chair Lori Mauthe requested that some DE costs from 2012 be charged to the Club Race, as margins were larger. This is under review and will be revisited. The inaugural DE Orientation at Park Place March 3 was excellent! Very informative, helpful, and it was a treat to have Lori’s dad, former Porsche CEO Peter Schutz, speak and sign his book. Another orientation is planned for the fall. John Hamilton interjected at this point asking that we vote on the new DE equipment (iPads and Apple TV displays) that Lori requested two months ago. We discussed balancing her budget with this purchase, to support the enhanced in-class experience; continued improvement is part of why attendance is increasing. Tom Froehlich, an avid DE participant, supported the vote “for,” based on his experience with video use at another facility, and said that it is a very useful tool and advantage, in that the relationship between instructor and student is enhanced. The motion to purchase the equipment was unanimously approved. Rick noted a possible sponsorship opportunity here? At this point, Lori mentioned a charity opportunity need in Frisco (similar to Jonathan’s Place) with a child-advocacy organization. John Hamilton requested a written proposal, then creation of subcommittee. Marlee Shaw supported with Mooseheart charity example. AX/TT Chair Travis Howard began his report with the fact that they had to cap the February autocross at 65 participants! March 24 will be the AX School at Crandall. Tracy offered to do an Awards banquet for the 2012 AX and TT series.

opened March 12; register for your tours early. At the Winter PCA board meeting in Orlando, there were no huge club initiatives, but they are going to create a new website. They introduced the new Porsche Panorama editor, Pete Stout, and also announced that a digital version of Pano is being implemented.

Robyn Howard, Autocross School Chair, needs instructors and volunteers for the school. She would like to revamp the school next year. Tom Froehlich said that we had a slight net gain in membership for February. He would like to use the Membership budget to help incentivize membership renewal. Calls are made to welcome newbies, but no one is calling ahead of renewals. Club Race Co-Chair Pat Heptig announced that the Club Race at Circuit of the Americas on Mother’s Day weekend is official. For the COTA DE, preference will be given to three Regions sponsoring. Entry fees are still pending. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit said for everyone to watch their email for COTA Club Race

PR Chair Linda Bambina suggested that an article describing our Sunday Drives be submitted to Panorama. The inaugural Getaway Weekend trip to Fredericksburg consisted of 13 cars total. Marlee Shaw will be helping her develop a Car Show concept for later this year. registration near end of March, with the email announcement to be distributed nationwide. Registration for the Traverse City Parade

Mav of the Month – Kristyn Starr! Thank you for your help with the March 3 Sunday Drive. The meeting ended at 8:36pm.

Destination Restoration: Breathing Life Back Into a 914 -- Part 2 By Ash Seidl-Staley

T

he year 2012 was the Year of the 914 for my family. The long arduous task of putting back together what we took off was daunting for two Porsche novices. It took most of 2011, but my Uncle finally found the drive to tackle the problems we faced and do whatever it took to get his 914-6 back on the road again. (Thank you, Tamara!) Enlisted as weekend help, I provided my opinions, consultations, manpower, and of course cold beer. I learned as much as I could, hoping to find similar things and techniques I could use later on my 911/935 project.

Custom center gauges with a Germany Region Sigil Picking up where last month’s article left off: we decided the best thing to do about the engine was to send it off to the shop for a rebuild. My uncle ended up not going for a complete rebuild, because after inspection everything in the case was just fine. He did have the shop replace various gaskets, seals, oil return tubes, piston rings, valve stems, chain tensioners, head studs, and other applicable hardware. While the engine was in the shop, we took on the rest of the car, and 8 April

Photos by the Author

over the following weekends my Uncle ended up replacing the rear CV axles, all the oil lines, more fuel lines, cleaned and re-greased ball bearings, checked the brakes, and deep cleaned/rebuilt the Webers.

The finished product! For anyone who has rebuilt engines with carburetors, you know that the first time tuning and timing the air/fuel flow is a taxing endeavor. Floats, jet combinations, idle screws, air mixture screws, and the word “venturi” plagued my dreams for two months! I can only imagine what damage it did to my Uncle’s psyche, being that he was the one who actually took them apart and rebuilt them over and over again. After we received the engine back from the shop, we ran into another snag, this time with the fuel system. My Uncle had purchased a new fuel pump, and after we hooked everything up, we started to get massive overflow of fuel up into the carburetors -- so much excess fuel that it was pouring out like a waterfall! Turns out the Bosch fuel pump he bought was pulling over 150 psi of fuel from the tank; tons more than the 3.5 psi required. We laugh now but at the time we couldn’t figure out the problem; we just kept taking the carburetors apart and checking the float settings.

Once over that hurdle, everything else was right where we wanted. We primed the engine with oil and attempted to crank it up. I cannot tell you the emotions that ran through my body when the engine turned over with a big low growling rumble followed by loud sputtering pops. Backfires of flames and smoke erupted from the top of the carburetors, mainly due to the excess fuel vapor from our gasoline monsoon. But slowly the engine came back to life. I want to say that the tuning process really began at the moment it first fired up, but I have to admit that it is still going on now. On Thanksgiving last year I was finally able to hop in the driver’s seat, buckle up the five-point harness and take off down the block. The last time I was in the car was in 1997 as a young boy back in South Carolina. I never thought it would be possible but there I was driving the nimble, agile, tiny, but extremely powerful go kart that is the Carrera 914-6. Now I just have to convince my Uncle to get it on the track!

Ready for the track! Would you like to have your restoration project featured in an upcoming issue of Slipstream? If so, contact me at ashseidlstaley@gmail.com so that we can put together an article about it.

estled on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Grand Traverse Bay, the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa will host our fun-filled 58th Porsche Parade this summer: June 23 through 29, 2013. With 900 acres of rolling greens, woodlands and waterfront, a multitude of vineyards, orchards and coastal roadways nearby, there is much to see, much to do, and much to enjoy! The Porsche Parade is PCA’s annual convention. It is a weeklong extravaganza of car events, tech sessions, social events and FUN. Whether you like to autocross, rally, tour, or Concours, there is plenty to do and see. Attendance is roughly 2000 people, most of whom arrive in their beautiful and much-loved Porsche automobile. The Parade is a great family vacation, and the Traverse City area has a wide variety of kid-friendly activities. You must register in advance for Parade as there is no onsite signup. Registration opened March 12. There will be a link to register on www.pca.org and parade2013.pca.org.

New this year! The Concours will include a “street” class for those who want to show their cars, but on more of an entry level. The Mobil TSD Rally on Tuesday June 25 takes us in and around the beautiful vineyards, orchards, forests, and dunes of the area in a rally that’s sure to be remembered.

sure to study for a top score or just show up to see what you think you know. Source materials for studying will be available on the Parade website as the date draws near. Banquets As we say in PCA, it’s not just the cars, it’s the food! We host five banquets during the week at the resort. We also have two “open” nights for you to sample the local fare of Traverse City. Other activities You can’t do it all! We have activities for kids and teens, an Art Show, Goodie Store, a 5K run/walk, a Gimmick Rally, an RC Car contest, and our local Tourmeister has assembled several driving and van/motorcoach tours to show us the beauty and interesting locations around the Grand Traverse Bay area of Upper Michigan. We end the week with a true Parade of Porsches through the east side of Traverse City and up Old Mission Peninsula. The Parade Tech Academy will be held Friday, June 28, and once again, we have an exciting mix of our outstanding PCA Technical Committee and outside speakers. Michelin hosts a “drive and compare,” where you can take laps in two identical Porsches, with two different types of tires. We will have a golf tournament on The Bear golf course at the resort, host to the state’s oldest and most prestigious tournament, the Michigan Open Championship, from 1985 through 2008. Lodging The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is our host hotel, and can accommodate all Parade-goers. The resort properties range from beachfront condos in a variety of configurations, to the centrally located

hotel & tower rooms. Special PCA rates will be available; upon registration you will receive an authorization code to access these rates. Entrant Eligibility and Fees You must be a PCA member to register for Parade, and only registered attendees may participate in Parade activities. Entrants and co-entrants must be PCA members, but they need not be family or affiliate members. Drivers’ Ed Orientation, Take 1: Park Place Motorsports By Lori Mauthe, DE Chair

O

n February 23, Maverick Region presented the first DE Orientation session. Our gracious host was Park Place Motorsports. Terry Powell and his team, joined by our longtime supporter from Park Place, Randall Johnson, rolled out the red carpet for 42 enthusiastic Mav-

Lots of space in the new Park Place Motorsports facility erick drivers. There were bagels, pastries, coffee and juice awaiting our arrival, as well as plenty of wonderful scenery. A marvelous collection of Porsche race cars ready and getting ready provided the backdrop for our presenters. The presentation began with DE Chair Lori Mauthe going through the preparation steps for YOU, the driver. We reviewed the safety equipment, both recommended and required. We had a spirited discussion about helmets – what’s your head worth?

Several race cars were present in various states of repair 12 April

Next, Keith Olcha provided a detailed description of the technical inspection required for every Porsche (or other car) in the event. Using Chris Hornsdorf’s beautiful 2013 911 cabriolet as an example. Keith covered aspects of safety from the front bumper to the tail light. Many of our veteran drivers pitched in with their experiences, especially those to avoid! Park Place, as well as other authorized Porsche serLori opened vice facilities, the session by will provide discussing driver the technical inspection preparation . . . and complete the tech form for you at no charge, so there is no reason to hesitate. Keith and Lori explained the importance of scheduling this appointment several weeks

. . . followed by Keith’s overview of what items are checked during tech inspection in advance of the event. In the case where they may find a service recommendation or requirement, we want you to have plenty of time to complete the brake flush, oil change, tire replacement, or whatever else may be necessary to have your Porsche track-ready.

The DE Orientation concluded with a summary of what happens the morning of the event. This is also detailed in the recent two-part article in the February and March issues of Slipstream.

Peter Schutz gave an animated account of what it was like to run Porsche AG in the 80s The next hour was a real treat – Peter Schutz, former President and CEO of Porsche joined our meeting. (He is Lori Mauthe’s father, visiting her for the weekend). Peter shared his stories of his time at Porsche, specifically how he saved the 911. How appropriate to be standing in front of a 2013 911!! For the next 30 minutes, our attendees were fascinated with stories of how Porsche was successful at the race track by working together, from driver to pit crew to the factory workers. Many left the event with a dedicated autographed copy of his book, The Driving Force.

He also took time to talk to each person who purchased his book as he autographed it Thanks again to Park Place Motorsports, Park Place Porsche, Keith Olcha, and Wendy Shoffit for their contribution to our successful event. Look for the next DE Orientation to kick off our Fall Drivers’ Ed Series.

Maverick Getaway Weekend: Fredericksburg By Nancy Manar

Photos by Linda Bambina except where noted

I

t’s hard to know where to begin with this wonderful “Getaway” weekend.

This First Inaugural Maverick PCA Getaway trip began for many of us just by getting through or out of Dallas and Fort Worth. As the weekend progressed, we met up with some

Sunday morning in front of a Pioneer Museum display bins of Austin; Tracey and Ed Gross of Austin; Steve and Jonathan Perrin of Irving; Steve and Cheryl Plybon of Tyler; Carey Spreen and Sue Crimm of Ft. Worth and Allen respectively; Nancy and Squire

Of course, we all know how the Mavericks love to eat, and this weekend was no exception.

Saturday morning rest stop, seated: Brenda and Warren Bischoff, Sue Crimm, and Carey Spreen; standing: Norman and Paula McCollough others from San Antonio and various parts of Texas during the event. The attendees were: Alan and Linda Bambina of Farmers Branch; Don and Taxi Breihaupt of San Antonio; Brenda and Warren Bischoff of Highland Village; Tannia Dob-

View from the Bambinas’ rear view mirror Manar of Allen; Les and Trish Moncus of Spicewood; Norman and Paula McCollough of Colleyville; Fran and Carl Ussery of Grapevine; and James Webber and Patricia of Plano.

The Getaway Group after eating way too much at Cooper’s Bar-B-Que in Llano 16 April

and plans for this wonderful weekend. Linda Bambina was totally prepared, as usual, with nametags, forms to sign for PCA Insurance Waivers, and then we“drew” for partners with whom to ride to dinner. It was a great way to get to know others in the group. Each driver had a new partner to ride with them to dinner. Great idea!

Arriving in the town of West on Friday night at the Czech Inn, we “czeched in” and gathered for our instructions

Nancy Manar and Linda Bambina visiting with a local Beginning at Wild Bill’s Outlaw Steakhouse in West, located across the street from the railroad station, we enjoyed a great meal. When the train roared through town, the price of beer dropped to $1.50 per mug -- it roared through several times during dinner -- much to our delight. A special 18th birthday celebration was shared for Jona-

than Perrin. He and his dad Steve enjoyed the weekend together for the first trip in 15 years. Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. sharp - we lined up nine Porsche beauties and headed for the hill country. With only one detour and turn-about, the trip was a total thrill and success, especially for several of us on our first-ever Porsche road trip. Lunch was in Llano at Cooper’s Old-Time Pit Bar-B-Que. Photo by Norman McCollough

Getting there is half the fun . . .

The weather could not have been better – Texas cool and clear sunshine all weekend long. Arriving in Fredericksburg at the Chamber Cheryl and Steve Plybon of Commerce for our maps and information on what to do and where to go, we all charted our courses. The variety of experiences were (but not limited to) Winery Tours, Nimitz Museum, Trade Days, and the Wildseed Farm. We then linked up again for a great dinner at Friedhelms Bavarian Restaurant for German food. Sunday we all met in front of a section of the Pioneer Museum on Schubert Street for yet another lineup of pictures. This seems to be

a habit with the club, and of course we all enjoy showing off our wonderful “rides.” The very best part of this Maverick Getaway Weekend was the friendships that blossomed. None of this would have been possible without Linda Bambina’s detailed planning and coordination. A tip of the ol’ Maverick hat to Alan and Linda’s expertise. If you missed this one, you will have other chances, and we hope to include you in the next Getaway Weekend.

Advertiser of the Month: Retro Air By Linda Bambina

L

ooking for a more efficient air conditioning system on your air-cooled 911?

There’s a small ad in Slipstream that belies some pretty sophisticated design work and problem solving for your (literally) hot car A/C problems here in Texas. Back in 2004, Rock Browning got into the world of designing highefficiency air conditioning systems for early model 911s (’69-’89) after his Porsche buddy was so impressed with the designs that Rock had come up with for his old Jaguar Systems and Kits. Those ideas have resulted in a dedicated A/C Kit business in Addison that does most of its business by website and phone calls from clients as far away

18 April

as Western Australia. Apparently designing these unique A/C systems for a right-hand-drive Porsche is even trickier than most people know, and Western Australia is even hotter in the summer than Texas!? But Rock’s innovative designs got one Aussie’s Porsche so COLD, that he wrote a lengthy “rave” testimonial e-mail to Rock at RetroAir. Rock’s first car was a ’47 Plymouth Coupe that he built with a modified Chrysler 6 engine in it. Rock has “been around cars all my life,” and worked in the automobile field for the majority of his adult life. With the help of a fellow design-trained employee, Toshiro Stehrenberger, they create 911/930 Air Conditioning Kits that will give

you below 40 degree F vent temps on 100 degree F days. (Actually that fella from Australia said he got temps of 28F, but turned it off for fear of freezing things up!) Rock and Toshiro are currently working on a new Full A/C Kit, and upgrading existing A/C on a 914, and perhaps a 912E, if they can find someone who will let them implement some of their design ideas. While this team does not ordinarily install the A/C systems, they certainly have to know the best place to fit them into our German-engineered tight spaces. Check out some of the important specs about Rock’s Kits in his ad below.

Cliff ’s Ramblings: Teamwork By Cliff Blackshear

A

few weeks ago I received a call from a friend who used to work in our shop. Abel Jimenez called and asked if his team could be allowed a place in our shop to prepare for the Grand Am race. Magnus Racing had already been talking with our managers about possible sponsorship, and while nothing had been decided, they suddenly needed a place to prepare for COTA. They had been testing at NOLA (New Orleans) and had suffered some bad luck, like destroying multiple front noses on the car due to constant rain and bad test conditions. Abel indicated that new carbon fiber front pieces were

being made and they needed a place to land and get the car right. I sent a quick e mail to the powers that be and word came back. “Tell them to come on and do what they need and help them in any way needed.” So it was “game on.” The truck showed up and we helped them unload and clear space for them. The car looked like a battle weary warrior. The guys set to work and stripped to the shell on a Sunday. I stayed there with them and simply observed everything. Engine/gearbox change, new axles, shocks, springs, brakes, all electrics checked and rechecked. They rolled the bare body to wash and bathe it, then wiped by hand every square millimeter of the car. Discussed every molecule of the

car as it was reassembled. I was absolutely mesmerized watching the care and constant willingness to do anything twice to get it better than just correct. Each team member had a section of the car they were responsible for. It became obvious to me that each person was not going to have anything fail in their area on race day. They worked three twelve-hour days in a row, and by Tuesday they started the engine for the first time since arriving. It roared to life with angry sounds of dissatisfaction from sitting still in a bay. This car was ready for combat. I went down and was their guest in the hot pits. Test day went well, and when Andy Lally was in the car, it was super quick. However, a problem reared its ugly head

-- two broken shocks. It became very worrisome for the team. Ultimately, nothing immediate could be done, except for drivers to be a little more concerned about the curbing. I will leave it at that. Race day it was 28 degrees and windy in the morning. Qualifying put us in 7th. Everyone had agreed that the Ferrari advantage at the track could not be overcome, and everyone wanted to simply beat all other Porsches at the track -- it was the mantra. As the race unfolded, things changed. The team decided to come in for a splash of fuel with 50 minutes remaining, when a Daytona Prototype rolled to a stop on the track and officials had not thrown a yellow as yet. Amazingly, as our car rolled back out on course, a yellow was thrown, and while everyone rolled around to pit-in, the Magnus 44 was catching the pack from behind. When everyone

came back out, the 44 was in 1st place in GT class. The 63 Ferrari of Allesandro Pier Guidi caught Andy, and ultimately a bit of contact occurred. The Ferrari got by, but was penalized for the contact. I hear it was only because the contact was in the driver’s door, and if it had been anywhere, else the penalty might not have been assessed. The team had warned Andy to save some tires for the last few laps, but the battle with the Ferrari had been fierce, and nearing the end, it started to show. A BMW was coming, with Bill Auberlen at the wheel; he and Andy have battled before. Ultimately the BMW got by, and Andy was livid on the radio concerning the contact they had. Magnus team Crew Chief nearly knocked me down getting to the pit wall and screaming at officials to review the contact made. The official then said it was being reviewed.

Ultimately the contact was let go and Magnus racing took second place behind the BMW. It was an amazing experience. The team works together like brothers and sisters. Everyone likes each other and works hard together. They tease each other and drink together and revel in spirit together. I was very much impressed with how they are a family, from the owner down. John Potter is the owner, and is every bit one of the family, as the guy who changes the left front tire or the guy who fuels the car. John is one of the guys and he knows how to own and run a team. Over 600 PCA folks visited the Magnus team, touring their trailer and the paddock area. They got a close look at the car and were fed some great food by the team. It was awesome. I had a great time, and look forward to a great relationship with these folks. Cheers!

Tech Corner: Don’t Try This at Home! By Ed Mullenix, Tech Session Chair

O

nce upon a time (three years ago) in a land far, far away (Weatherford) lived a PCA member named Joe. Joe owned a gorgeous Guards Red ’99 Carrera. Joe had a friend interested in buying the Carrera, so Joe let him drive it for the weekend. The friend had a teenage son who was even more passionate about fast cars than his daddy. “Junior” managed to spirit the Carrera away in the night and blow the clutch out of it. Joe’s friend called and told him he didn’t want the Porsche after all

and where it could be found. All of this should have earned Joe and his friend an episode on “Dr. Phil.” The car found its way to Al’s for a clutch and a flywheel. The engine still vibrated terribly. The crankshaft main bearings were gone! But rather than buy a new engine from Porsche, Joe decided he’d replace the damaged engine with a used one. Joe soon found that there were not any 3.4-liter M96.01 engines to be had. He eventually found a “smokin’ deal” on a 3.6-liter M96.03. The 3.6-liter had variable valve lift and a newer engine management system. Unfortunately, other than bolting into the same hole, nothing really matched

up with the replacement engine. Joe found a guy in Georgia that does 3.6 conversions. Joe sent the engine to “Hotlanta” for “Famous Fabien” to perform his magic. In order to get the 3.6 to work with the original Bosch DME 5.52 management system, the sensing wheels on the camshafts had to be re-machined to match the position of the 3.4. Also, a separate speed switch and additional wiring for the variable valve lift had to be incorporated. Several weeks and several thousands of dollars later, the 3.6 returned. Joe installed it but could not get it to start. After a couple of months and much frustration, Joe conceded defeat and sent

PRINTER OF SLIPSTREAM SINCE 1982

the car to one of the local repair specialists. They were unable to get it started, and it wound up at yet another shop. No joy in Mudville. The ill-fated Carrera ultimately found its way to my shop. This poor car probably had accumulated more wrecker miles than driving miles in the last four years. When our friend Famous Fabien worked on the engine, somehow the cam sensing wheels did not get machined correctly. The ignition coils did spark and the injectors opened but none of it happened at the right time. The determination was made that, rather than buy new 3.6 camshafts and hope that Fabien would actually machine them correctly, we would install some used 3.4-liter cylinder heads.

The head replacement worked great with only some minor modification to the block and head gaskets (a 6mm hole drilled and tapped to match the location of the hole on the 3.4 head). The engine roared back to life! Oh, wait a minute -- Fabien also reprogrammed the old ME 5.2 computer to richen up the mixture for the additional displacement of the 3.6. This thing smoked like a diesel when it started up cold. Also a check engine light flashed at us with several fault codes. Cliff reprogrammed the computer back to original 3.4-liter specs, but the check engine light persisted. Sometime during the lengthy misadventure, Joe had bought some oxygen sensors off of Ebay. The logic went something like this:

“I have a 3.6 engine, I’ll buy 3.6 oxygen sensors.” What Joe didn’t understand was that his ME 5.2 was programmed to accept 3.4 type oxygen sensors. The 3.6 sensors that were installed looked like a failed component to the computer. I discovered the mismatch after several hours of testing and cussing. The moral of the story: other than the occasional quantum leap in product development, Porsches evolve over time. Later components can usually be installed in earlier models, and earlier components will often fit in later models. This ability to update is fantastic, as long as you keep in mind that no single component is modified. If you’re Jonesin’ to put a 3.8 S engine in your ’97 Boxster, be prepared for some surprises!

Member Spotlight: Paul Barham By Lisa Steele, National Membership Chair

T

his month’s Member Spotlight is on Paul Barham. Paul has a beautiful brand new 2013 Panamera 4S. He has only had the car since November but I’m sure it has seen a lot of street time throughout the metroplex. Paul is not new to owning top-ofthe-line autos. Some of his previous cars have been a Maserati Quattroporte, Jaguar XJR, BMW 740iL, Infiniti Q45, and many others that would just take up this page. Paul has been married for almost 25 years and has three sons. His 20-year-old twin sons attend Abilene Christian University, and his 15-year-old son is a fresh-

man in high school. Their Panamera makes a great car for this large family! Originally from England, Paul has been in the DFW area since 1982. When not driving around town in his beautiful Porsche sedan, you might find Paul hiking, traveling, enjoying family time, and on church missions. Please help me give Paul a warm Maverick WELCOME!

If you would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT” feature, please contact me at lsteele914@verizon.net.
