Sprockets:

How to Fill Garage Space

By David Robertson, Region President

T

his month our third of three garage spaces has been occupied by a new automobile. I have been saving this space for an early ‘80s 911 SC Cabriolet complete with that iconic whale tail, or a Boxster that my wife has been wanting for a few years now. I could also imagine an ‘80s 911 Targa or even a new Macan in the spot. This space has mostly been storage for certain yard implements and a few unfinished projects in anticipation of that day when the new addition arrives, to sit under the appropriate wall art that has been specially ordered and displayed next to the gloriously engineered machine. Well, rather unceremoniously my wife’s employer issued her a company car and, as they say, that is that. Did I mention that we have two automobiles already, and only one of them is a Porsche? Don’t get me wrong: I am extremely thankful and blessed to have a house, a Porsche, and a garage to begin with, and this is certainly the granddaddy of first-world problems to face, but it is a dilemma nonetheless. I have covered all the options in my head, from putting in a lift, to adding on to the garage, or just buying a new house. There is also the option of purchasing a car condo that I could build out to my specs (hint: these condos are advertised in Slipstream). The last option usually encourages even more car collecting, as space is no longer an issue. For one reason or another, none of these choices is really an option for me, so I have finally decided that we probably just don’t need the non-Porsche, non-company automobile. It may be a while until the perfect Porsche takes its rightful place in the garage, but its spot will be there waiting, with plenty of space on the walls for the appropriate accoutrement. As a member of this club, I have plenty of opportunities to see examples of the automobiles I imagine taking that coveted third spot in my garage someday. I also get to discuss all the details of owning, driving, and maintaining a particular model with its owner. At our first Mavs & Mochas on March 11 we had over 120 automobiles on display, and I could envision most of them sitting in my garage! There was a little bit of everything, from early Porsches to very rare late models. Many of these cars you will never see anywhere else. The new Mavs and Mochas event is an immediate hit with our members and I encourage you to get out to the next one on April 8 at Zims Autotechnik in Bedford. This is a very informal come-and-go event where we all just grab a cup of coffee, catch up with old friends, meet new people, and see lots of great Porsches! Be sure to check out our upcoming events section on pages 16-17 and participate whenever possible. 2 April

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 MAV OF THE MONTH: Tony Lisotta Our Maverick Region is fortunate to welcome approximately 300 new members each year who bring new perspectives and energy to all of our club activities. Our Mav of the Month is one of these relatively new members who joined PCA on September 23, 2014. In that short amount of time, Tony Lisotta engaged hundreds of Mavericks by founding and hosting a Porsche-only “cars and coffee” type of gathering each month since May, 2015. Just last month, Tony graciously agreed to transition that private gathering to become an official Maverick Region monthly social event. As I mentioned, the first Mavs & Mochas took place on March 11 at Highland Park Village and was a very big success. In addition, Tony got the MSR track fever by first participating in the SCCA Track Night in America program in 2015. From that experience, he has moved to become a regular participant (now Blue solo) in our Region Drivers’ Education program and exercises his 911 in the manner for which it was engineered. Congratulations, and thank you Tony for “Driving Friendships” in our club for almost three years. Enjoy your gift certificate from our friends at the Silver Fox in Grapevine.

President David Robertson C 617-797-0516 president@mavpca.org

David fell in love with the Porsche 911 when, as a child, he would have his parents stop by the old Forest Lane Porsche in Dallas so he could dream of someday owning one. He bought his first Porsche 911 in 2011. He and his wife Tracy enjoy being active members in the Maverick Region.

Vice President Jim Falgout vp@mavpca.org

Jim joined Maverick Region in August, 2008. He drives a 2003 996, which is the third Porsche he has owned. Jim enjoys attending Maverick Region social and driving events.

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821 secretary@mavpca.org

Wendy and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now in college. They own three Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2016 Cayman GT4.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 treasurer@mavpca.org

Gimme a Minute:

March Board Meeting Minutes

By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

P

resident David Robertson started the meeting at 7:04. He thanked Jim Falgout for filling in for him last month when he was out of town. He also thanked Bill Kruder for taking on the lead role for the new Mavs & Mochas series of events. The first will be March 11 in Highland Park Village. He also thanked Nikolaus Klemmer for picking up the Tech Sessions lead. Nikolaus then mentioned there were successful videos on Youtube involving the tech of cars. He would like to perhaps make some new ones to add, involving dealers and local shops where possible. He also wants to involve aftermarket car services like paintless dent repair, clear film application, and easy maintenance items for the DIYers out there. He is looking for additional ideas from board and club members. David also mentioned that there was a Zone 5 Presidents’ meeting on Feb 18. PCA National is making us very aware of suggested guidelines for social media and important insurance issues. All moving car events must have waivers signed by drivers and spectators alike. That also includes cars moving on a lift. Discussion to clarify ensued. Social Chair Tracy Robertson announced that the May at Mayo’s event will be on May 6. Dan Amado stated that we had a great DE the prior weekend, including great instruction and a sold-out Green run group. Rally Co-Chair Don Sebert reported that the first rally of the year will be the April 22 Easter Rally ending in Muenster. Later in the year will be a Poker Rally on July 22, moved from the 15th. Mavs & Mochas Chair Bill Kruder thanked Tony Lisotta who started the event two years ago and recently agreed to assist in the transition to making it a MRPCA sanctioned event. The dates are planned out through July. 6 April

Slipstream Editor Jim Hirsch said that the printed copy count remained the same. We are currently at 63% advertising, which includes our club events. He wants to reduce that percentage to allow more content, so we will be reducing the size of event ads to ¼ page. He has entered the 2016 PCA Newsletter contest, including two new categories: Best Cover and Best Feature Article. Calendar Chair Karl Paulsen made necessary adjustments to the calendar, including moving the Autocross event 3 to April 9. He has been marking those changed events on the calendar for easier visibility. Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr reported that Equipe Rapide has moved their events in Mesquite to locations more central, most hopefully to Lone Star Park (the Cirque du Soleil show opted to not extend their use of the LSP parking lot). He also said that there were 106 cars at the last autocross. ER is able to purchase new equipment, which will help everyone. The school set for April 1 is usually oversold and will have an AX the next day. Content Editor Carey Spreen mentioned that UNT (who is digitizing our archives) is celebrating their 5 millionth newspaper page and invited us to their banquet on March 9. He attended the Zone 5 meeting where Maverick Region was celebrated for our 55th anniversary. National presented us with great items for our history archives. We plan to bring them to upcoming events. Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho was thrilled with the turnout at our Valentine event at Lavendou. Owner Pascal was happy with the 140+ attending and the appreciation plaque we gave him. The next event is a Spring party at Uncle Buck’s on March 16, and then at Hard 8 BBQ on April 20, which will be moved earlier to 6 pm. May will be something different – a drive-in movie event in Lewisville.

March 1, 2017

Tour Chair Bill Orr reported that he has exceeded the minimum number of signatures required to move forward with the Custom PCA License Plate for Texas. He is working on designs that have a universal appeal to sell to more people. He manages 12 social media sites using Hootsuite. He requested $60/ year to upgrade to the paid version, giving him more flexibility than the free one. It was approved. The last digital photo frame was finally put into place at Porsche Plano, thanks to help from PCNA Regional Sales Manager Steve Krysil. Webmaster James Shoffit also attended the Zone 5 meeting and believes we should create a shared vault (aka Red Book) of information about bank accounts, websites, social media, etc., to maintain continuity in leadership changes. He reported for Membership Chair John Hamilton that we have a total of 1,708 primary members (up 26 from last month). Drivers’ Ed/Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit reported that we had 162 drivers at the prior weekend’s DE event, a HUGE turnout particularly in upper run groups. The following weekend is the Club Race at COTA, moved from Mother’s Day weekend to March. Turnout is higher than last year. She also mentioned that the Hill Country Treffen was coming soon, which is a fourstar event. She encouraged more to sign up for it, as well as for Parade in Spokane, WA (registration is now open). Lastly, she mentioned PCA National has some great initiatives in mind for the upcoming year, including a strong focus on kids. David Robertson announced the Mav of the Month is Tony Lisotta for the great job he did creating the precursor to Mavs and Mochas. Meeting was adjourned at 8:24 pm.

Kruder’s Cars & Conversations By Bill Kruder, Region Advertising Chair

A

s with just about everyone I meet of late, it’s because of Cars & Coffee. The first time we saw the stunning 2017 911 was at Southlake; the car appeared and left, and several of us were dumbfounded as to who it belonged to. Then a couple weeks later, at an “impromptu” coffee meet in Frisco, it appeared again; this time we didn’t let the owner slip through our fingers. A couple of us tracked him down to get a closer look. But it wasn’t until he was driving away that Greg Cleath yelled over to me and said “you have to talk to that guy.” So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . . Gordon Graves, owner 2017 991.2 Carerra 4S, member since 2015 Bill Kruder: Where are you originally from? Gordon Graves: Believe it or not I’m from Plano. My family moved here from McKinney in 1952; I was in the second grade. Back then there weren’t all these schools; I think we had all grades in one building. My high school graduation class had 62 kids in it. (Today, Plano has three senior high schools and graduates a total of about 4,000 students these days.) BK: And what about your wife Susan? GG: She’s from Dallas; we met in the early 70s and have now been married for 41 years. BK: I know you’re retired now but I hear you did a few different things. GG: It’s been interesting. My first job out of college, I worked for the Dallas County Medical Examiners office as an investigator; kind of a CSI guy you could say.

Photos courtesy of the Author

BK: Of all cars, why does that one stand out? GG: When I was a kid I would build model cars, and my favorite I ever built was a black 1940 coupe. I never forgot how much I liked it so in 1977 we bought the real thing. BK: So how did you get into Porsches? GG: That I can blame on Susan and our friend Jim Collier. We first met Jim about 1999 and he was into Vettes and Porsches so with his help we did the same. BK: How did you decide on Porsche and what was your first? GG: My boss at the time had one. I had the chance to drive it and I was smitten. Our first was a 1982 Platinum Targa; we had that for about three or four years. BK: Now I understand the second one you had has an interesting story? GG: That’s kind of funny. A couple years ago Susan and I decided we would go out to a Mecum Auction in Denver. As we were walking around looking at the cars we saw this 2008 silver-on-black Turbo cab. I didn’t think much of it but Susan struck up a conversation with the owner, and after a phone call to Jim (Collier) we bought it. BK: There’s a bit of Maverick celebrity with that car right? GG: Well not sure about “celebrity,” but we did a Sunday drive with Tom Martin several months ago and it ended up on the cover of Slipstream.

BK: But I’ve heard your interest has been around cars? GG: It is for sure. My next job was an adjuster for Progressive Insurance, but all the driving was a bit much. Town East Ford offered me a job, and I became the Assistant Manager of the body shop. That was ok. I didn’t have to drive, but the hours were long and I was working a lot, so one day I thought, “if I’m going to work this hard I might as well work for myself.” So in about 1987 I bought an Eagle Transmission Store in Garland and owned that ‘til I retired in 2007. BK: So what’s one of your favorite cars you have had? GG: I think my favorite over the years was a 1940 Ford coupe; I guess you would say it was a hot rod. It had a small block Chevy engine in it with a turbocharger. 12 April

Gordon and Susan share more than a car

BK: Ok so you bought that in 2015 but that’s not what caught our eye at a recent Cars & Coffee?

GG: We traded it in for our 2017 991.2 Black-on-Burgundy 4S. That in itself was just kind of random. We had been up in Prosper for breakfast and decided on the way home we would stop in just to “look” at Porsche Plano. Well, there sat this beautiful black Carrera Cabriolet, and after a bit of discussion, we had ourselves a deal.

BK: Oh really? GG: Yes. Back in 1999 I was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and was placed on a waiting list for a transplant. At first we thought that one of my two sisters would be a match, but because it’s hereditary, that didn’t work out. Then one day we were out with friends from the Harley Club, and they said “why can’t Susan be the donor?” Well that would be fine but we didn’t even know her blood type let alone if she would be a match. But as luck would have it, like a miracle, she was a match.

BK: So that brings us to the license plate on this car: “4 A KIDNY”. What’s the price again? What’s the story here? GG: Most people laugh about it and think, yes they do cost about what a kidney would. But the real story is it really is about a kidney.

BK: So the plate isn’t new? GG: Oh no, it’s been on about four different cars since then. As Susan laughs, “you can’t buy kidneys but you can buy cars.”

BK: So in turn you bought her the car? GG: Oh I have bought more than one for her since then (chuckling). The first one was a red Mercedes 500SL; remember this was 1999.

Again I’m often astonished what a chance meeting turns into. A special thanks to Greg Cleath, who nudged me saying “you have got to talk to this guy”; it truly is about Driving Friendships.

May at Mayo’s for 2017:

Return to Cinco de Mayo Weekend

By Phyllis Gallegos, Region Social Co-Chair

O

ne of our major Social and Concours gatherings of the year is May at Mayo’s! This year the date is Cinco de Mayo weekend on Saturday, May 6, at Mayo Performance in Euless. Last year we had many members attend, and we had over 70 great Porsches of all vintages on display. While many had come just for the Concours, a good number of people joined us for dinner. This event kicked off the Maverick Region’s Concours season. Concours d’Elegance Chair Andy Kay managed the car contest, and had the winners identified by the time we were done with dinner! This year, catering will be provided by Desperados MexiA longstanding Maverick can Restaurant of Garland. concours tradition Several members dine there often and are big fans of the restaurant’s fabulous Mexican fare. The menu will be a little different from

Photos by Jim Hirsch last year’s offering, and should be a favorite of all. Oh yes, did I mention that we will have Margaritas and beer too? Mayo Performance, at 1521 Baccarac Ct in Euless, is always a great host, and we so appreciate being invited into their garage! A sampling of the large number and Porsche ownvariety of Porsche vehicles at the event ers enjoy getting their cars cleaned and polished for this event. PCA Tours Preview:

The Ennis Bluebonnet Tour

By Bill Orr, Region PCA Tour Co-Chair

T

he second PCA Tour of the season takes us to Ennis, the official Bluebonnet City of Texas. Each year, thousands of people flock to this small town south of Dallas to view some 40 miles of bluebonnet trails and to attend the festival that celebrates this natural wonder. Typically the bluebonnets peak around the third week of April. However, this can vary year to year due to weather conditions and terrain, so we have chosen Sunday, April 15 for this year’s Tour. That’s a week after the big Bluebonnet Festival and midway through the month, so hopefully the traffic will be light and the bluebonnets will be in bloom. PCA Tours are a perfect The tour starts at an old match for 4-door owners Bank of America building on the corner of I-45 and Palestine St in Hutchins at 10 am and proceeds south through the cities of Ferris, Palmer, and finally Ennis. It’s a roughly 86-mile trip that ends at Bubba’s BBQ & Steakhouse (www.bubbasbbqsteakhouse.com) on I-45 for lunch. We should arrive at the restaurant sometime around noon. If BBQ is not to your liking, you are free to try one of the many independent and chain restaurants in the area. Bubba’s can only hold about 110 people, so please let us know if you plan to stay for lunch when you register. Speaking of registration: the tours have become so popular that managing these large groups has become somewhat complicated, and registering via email just doesn’t work very well. In an effort to streamline the process and still keep it easy to use, I have created a form on the Maverick Region website that I can customize for each tour. Moving forward, all registration will be done through http://mav.pca.org/register/ tours/. If you plan to attend the Great photo Tour, it is imperative that you opportunities along RSVP before the Tour. When the route you RSVP, it gives us an accu-

rate count to alert the managers of the restaurant so that they can be prepared. Additionally, three days before the Tour, you will receive an e-mail with a Garmin .gdb file of the route, a route overview, and turn-byturn instructions. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at tours@mavpca.org. I hope to see you and your Porsche at the Ennis Bluebonnet Tour! If you can’t make it be sure to check out our schedule of future tours at http://mav.pca.org/go/tours.

Golden Anniversary:

Ed Mayo’s 50 years with PCA

As Told to Carey Spreen

T

hings you may not have known about Ed

Mayo: • Before joining PCA he was a hotrodder! • He first heard about PCA during a traffic stop! You can usually find Ed and his • He joined PCA in 1972 911S at each another Region! club autocross event • He didn’t own a 911 until 1983! These and other little-known facts are presented here for your Ed-ification. While Ed was living in the Cleveland area in the 1960s, his original interest in cars focused on 1930s American iron. His first was a ’37 Ford sedan that he turned into a hot rod, and he soon acquired other similar cars. His conversion to sports cars took place when Ed and a fraternity brother, who owned a ’59 356A Coupe, were doing some spirited driving around Ohio’s back roads, and, despite the horsepower advantage of the Ford, the 356 stayed ahead of the Ford. It wasn’t too long before Ed sold the ’37, and began his search for more nimble European machinery. Previously, his former high school Auto Shop teacher had opened a Volkswagen repair shop, so Ed asked his advice about what to buy. Ed had found a Bugeye Sprite, but his mentor told him “don’t bring it here!” His recommendation was, as you have already guessed, a Porsche, specifically a 1960 356B Roadster. In those days it was common to drive a street-legal car to a racing event, race it, and then drive it home again. Ed did this with his B Roadster in SCCA E Production while still in the Cleveland area. On one occasion, he was pulled over by one of Cleveland’s Finest. To Ed’s surprise, the cop asked him if he was a PCA member, to which Ed replied, “What’s PCA?” The policeman summarily invited him to join, and in March 1967 he became a member of the Northern Ohio Region. As has been chronicled in previous Al Zim retrospectives, Ed visited Al in North Texas and soon moved here, transferring to Maverick Region in November 1971. Although he had been teaching in Cleveland, his preference was working on cars full time. He applied for a job at Don Miller Porsche + Audi (later Forest Lane, then Lipshy), and the interview went something like this: 18 April

Photos courtesy of Ed Mayo Service Manager: Do you have any experience working on Volkswagens? Ed: No, my experience is mainly with Porsches. Service Manager: You start work tomorrow. After a couple of years there, he moved to the new dealer in Ft Worth, Green Oaks Porsche + Audi. But Ed and Al Zim had also been running a backyard repair shop. In 1974, when that business got shut down, they opened Por-Sha in Euless, and later moved the operation, renamed Zim and Mayo, to Bedford and into the building now occupied by Zims Autotechnik. Ed opened his own shop, Mayo Performance, in Euless, after parting ways with Al in the early 1980s. During this time, Ed was still racing in SCCA E Production, competing against Vic Skirmants and other well-known racers of the day. He had also tried his hand at autocross, even before moving to North Texas, running a 1957 Beetle with a modified Porsche engine in it. When Ed and his Roadster arrived in Maverick Region, amongst the fast autocrossers were Charlie Davis and Barry Gibbs, both of whom drove 911s, and Bob Horn, who, with his wife, competed in a Speedster. Eventually Ed beat Bob, and Ed’s wife Betty beat Bob’s wife, establishing a new chapter in Maverick competition. Ed owned and competed in a number of 356s through 1982, until divorce forced the sale of his last one, a 1957 Speedster. By 1983, Ed had set his sights on a more powerful Porsche: a silver 1972 911S, owned by David Keens, which was the “hot rod” of the model line for that year. He paid David $13,500 for it, and still drives it today – you may have heard of it referred to as “Elvira.”

Ed, David Keens, and “Elvira”

Also in 1983, Jan Thompson, recently divorced herself, began dating Ed, and with Jan came a 1.8-liter 914.

The motor in that car was soon replaced with a rebuilt 2.0-liter carbureted engine, and they began autocrossing it. Up until that time, Ed had not been much of a fan of 914s, but soon realized that they were killer autocross weapons! He then bought a 914 that they could run in the stock class, and did well there too. Eventually they procured a full-race-modified 914 from a customer for whom Ed had built a race motor. “Cockroach” went on to be a class winner, and even a Parade Top Time of Day winner in Jan’s hands.

Ed’s first exposure to the Porsche Parade was the 1981 Asheville, NC event, although he was not an official entrant; he was there to assist Steve Kent prepare Steve’s 1968 911L for the Parade Concours d’Elegance. Ed and Jan entered the Costa Mesa, CA Parade in 1985, and Ed has not missed one since. When Maverick Region won its bid to host the Parade in 1987, Ed was tapped to be the Tech Inspection Chair. To prepare for that role, he attended the ’86 Down East Parade (Portland, ME), learning everything he could about what he needed to do by shadowing Judy Boles, the Tech Inspection Chair that year. Among Ed’s other accomplishments: in 1989, he received the Richard F. Selcer award, and was Maverick Region’s top male driver of the year. He was Region President in 1991-92, and top male driver again in 1996. He became the PCA National Tech Advisor for early 911s in 2003, after winning the Parade Tech Quiz Early 911 class four times in succession, taking home the overall trophy in 1999 and 2002. So congratulations, Ed, for your contributions to PCA and Maverick Region these last 50 years!

Mavs & Mochas:

Inaugural Meet at Highland Park Village

By Bill Kruder and Debi Gibson, Region Coffee Meets Co-Chairs

W

ith the anticipation of kids at Christmas or the driver waiting to hear the words “ladies and gentleman start your engines,” we were ready to begin our inaugural Mavs & Mochas on March 11th in Highland Park Village. Like all Porsche DFW Cars & Coffee before this, “the crew” was there early to see that the lot was ready for our friends, getting the flags in place and cones set. It wasn’t long before our first arrivals began to show. As you know, we post this as an 8:30am to 10:30am meet. Well, by 8:05, and I recall this exact time, Jimmy Gallegos turns to me and says “I think we have over 50 cars;” keep in mind it doesn’t even start for another 25 minutes! And so it continued, and the cars kept flowing in. By 8:30am, Robert Kendrick grabs me and says “we’re going to beat Addison with nearly 80 cars;” and still they kept coming. Not long after that, Jim Hirsch found me and said “I’m going to get us a count, we have to have more than 100;” and count he did, finally losing track somewhere just over 120 cars with cars now arriving and departing. Speaking of cars, we had just about all Porsche models in attendance, including a couple vintage 914’s, a couple pristine 356’s, several GT3’s, too many air cooled 911’s to mention, Targas both vintage and new, a very rare Club Blau 911 GTS, and last, and certainly maybe the rarest, was Ajai Cadambi’s ‘05 Carerra GT. And did I mention people? Needless to say we had people everywhere; at times it was like a swarm of bees moving from one end of the lot to the other, following whatever just pulled in. The excitement was contagious with everyone wanting one of the new Mavs & Mochas stickers and even ordering t-shirts! We would be remiss if we didn’t thank a few Happy Mav members and a people for making this great location combined for such a huge success: Tony a wonderful gathering Lisotta for sharing his pas-

sion for getting us together nearly two years ago; David Robertson for supporting that we make this a “Club” event; Kurt Scaggs for his design effort on our logo; Chris Flaugh for getting us our window stickers; Bill Orr II for his continual updating of our Facebook and social media postings, and to the Highland Park Village StarAlways look for club flags bucks team for keeping our to locate our events (photo Mochas full. And lastly, a big thank you by George Luxbacher) to Jeff Van Sicklen and Park Place Porsche for bringing out the latest and greatest.

The number of Maverick members attending the inaugural Mavs & Mochas continued to grow throughout the morning

So, as you can tell, our first M&M was a huge success and this we promise is only the beginning. More great locations and friendships are coming in the future! If you missed this one, make certain to schedule to attend our next event on April 8th at Zims Autotechnik. And remember . . . we are always “driving friendships.”

Historicizing Porsche: By Ash Seidl-Staley

Fuchs for Ferdinand

Photos courtesy of the Author

W

hen Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, Ferry Porsche’s eldest son, went out searching for the perfect wheel for his 911 production sports car, he knew that acquiring just any wheel would not do. It had to compliment the 911, it had to be sleek, it had to be light, it had to be trendsetting, and, above all else, it had to be made of some sort of alloy. Otto Fuchs, working out of a workshop in Meinerzhagen, Germany, accepted F.A.’s wheel challenge, and even let F.A. design the final product! The result from the Porsche-Fuchs collaboration became one of the most iconic sets of wheels ever to be manufactured for a road-going sports car. Of course, I’m talking about Fuchsfelge, the “windmill” wheels, or put simply, Fuchs. Since their initial 911 contract signed in 1963, Otto Fuchs KG has continued to develop alternative wheel designs for cars, motorcycles, trucks, and even airplanes. In the late sixties to early seventies Otto Fuchs developed what came to be known as the baroque wheel for the Mercedes-Benz W 108 and W 109. Later, Fuchs supplied wheels for the NSU Ro80, Opel’s Kadett GTE, and even BMW’s first M5. Since the early 1980s Audi, Rolls-Royce, and Lamborghini have all been known to deploy sets of forged Fuchs on some of their most prestigious models. But it is with Porsche that Fuchsfelge have garnered their legendary status. Initially, Porsche offered 15-inch Fuchs for its 911 S model, but in 1981 expanded their coverage to include the 924 and 944 base models. Since 1988, Fuchs have been the standard wheel deployed on the 911 Carrera, and can be ordered in the classic 15- and 16-inch diameters, or upgraded to 17-, 18-, or even 19-inch sizes! Currently, aftermarket Fuchs, knockoff Fuchs, and brand-spanking-new Fuchs can be ordered, and fitted onto nearly all Porsche models regardless of the wheelbase, ride height, or year. Don’t have a set of Fuchs lying around the garage? That’s ok; eBay, Pelican Parts, Craigslist, and even 5milesapp.com have lightly used sets going for around $1200-$1500. Plus, you can always build a Porsche online or check out the Fuchs website at www.fuchsfelgeusa.com for pricing and to attain lists of applicable vehicles. As you might have guessed, I have a set of classic Fuchs (as Porsche fanatics, haven’t we all at some point?). My set, along with a massive set of BBS Wheels, were bequeathed to me with my grandfather’s 1972 911 T-V (carbureted) -- the one with the infamous 935 Kevlar body kit. And although they are not bolted onto any vehicle now, I plan on keeping them indefinitely. These Fuchs are special to me, not just because they were my 28 April

1972 vintage Fuchs wheel with custom painted cap

grandfather’s and are most likely original to his ‘72, but because my mother actually painted the Porsche name and crest on the wheel caps! Before my existence was ever thought of, my grandfather commissioned my mother to “spice up” his Fuchs, a task the young, aspiring artist graciously accepted. It has been nearly forty years since she painted these caps, but the paint still pops with vibrant color. Every time I look at the Fuchs I am treated to happy memories depicting both my grandfather and my mother. For these reasons, I could never bring myself to sell them. I’d like to close out this month’s article with a short dedication to my mother, Diana McCoy, as on the 21st of this month she will be celebrating the big 5-0. I cannot express how much I love her, and how grateful I am that she raised me the way that she did. I want to thank her for her compassion, for her wisdom, and for her love. Thank you Mom! I love you, and have an extremely Happy Birthday! See you next month, Mavs. As always . . . Wrench On! Longtime columnist Ash and his mother, Diana McCoy

2017 Maverick Region Autocross Program By Mark Schnoerr, Maverick Region Autocross Chair

Photos courtesy of the Author

T

he Maverick Region / Equipe Rapide Autocross Program has been a huge success and is just getting started for year three together. Each event draws more than 100 participants and at least ten Porsches. Our autocrossonly focused partner has the usual club officers and a total of ten board members, including a PCA member, yours truly, the Maverick PCA Autocross Chair.

It takes a lot of people doing a lot of well-synchronized tasks to run these events. There are early set up crews that begin with a trailer full of gear, unload most of it, set up a start and finish lines, install the timers, then lay out, blow off, and chalk the course, sometimes beginning before first light. Tech inspection and registration teams get started at 8:00 am sharp. The Worker Assignment person coordinates every entry into the event since autocross is a work/run participation sport. There are many roles the ER Board Members take on at every event to keep it running smoothly all the way through clean up (another team of people) and the awards ceremony. We are very fortunate to have partnered with Equipe Rapide for our autocross program. The success of the program helps to fund topnotch equipment and pay out cash awards at every event. New for 2017: All new wireless timing systems with redundant backups, new MirrorCross Christmas Tree starting lights for the side by side starts at those events, new Motorola radio systems, ongoing replacement of beat-up pylons, special cases and kits for transporting all the gear to each site, equipment trailer maintenance, multiple course blower upkeep, new chalk line spreaders, and updated computers that control and monitor it all. Check the schedule (p. 16) and come out to see what all the excitement is about, take a ride-along, or enter your car to come and play with us at an event soon. Schedule update: Lone Star Park, one of the best autocross sites in the area, has opened up a date for the PCA/ER AutoCross program – Sunday, April 9. This will become event number three, as the Mesquite date in April has been cancelled.

Maverick Region trophy winners for the 2016 autocross season included Mark Schnoerr, Mike and Lisa Syler, Julia Underwood, Ed Mayo, and Sigrid Schnoerr (left to right)

Julia and Sigrid also won Discount Tire coupons

Ed Mayo wins another yearend trophy with his 911S

Obscure Porsche News Finally Revealed By Tom Martin

H

Photos courtesy of the Author

ere’s all the news from the Porsche world that Tom Martin, our intrepid cub reporter, was able to uncover over these past few months. There has been so much other club news for us to report here in Slipstream, that we’ve had to push these late-breaking, unlikely news items to our April issue. Please read on, and you may find out the reason for our publishing delay. PORSCHE TO ENTER NASCAR WITH PANAMERA HYBRID It’s official! Porsche will field a team of specially-prepared Panamera hybrids to compete in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2018. Hendrick Motorsports will spearhead the Porsche NASCAR program, and current and past factory drivers Patrick Dempsey and Mark Webber are scheduled to share driving duties, because NASCAR chicks think they’re “hot.” Porsche driving guru Walter Röhrl is already preparing his young steeds for the rigors of a NASCAR season by immersing them into an intensive “dip and spit” program. Stay tuned for further developments. PORSCHE TESTS NEW 917 ELECTRIC HOVERCRAFT Porsche UK was recently spotted at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in Northamptonshire, testing Porsche’s new 917 electric hovercraft. The effort is more of an engineering exercise than practical application. (so they say!) Engineering Chief Nigel Spanner observes, “It goes like the clappers, but cornering is a problem, what with the bloody car riding on a three-inch cushion of air. Downforce is virtually a foreign concept at this point.” Spanner confirmed that Stuttgart is working on the issue.

MICHELIN TARGETS RETRO-LOOK WHITEWALLS Some of the earliest Pre-A Porsche 356s sported whitewall tires. And they looked pretty darn good too, at least by 1953 standards. Tire manufacturer Michelin has just announced that they will offer its highest line of performance street tires, the ultra-sticky Pilot Sport Plus, with optional white walls. Also available will be the “Michelin” text highlighted in different colors printed on the sidewalls, à la Formula 1. Is this a sign of Michelin coming back to Formula 1? One can only hope not, especially after the 2006 US Grand Prix debacle in Indianapolis. Il suffit de dire. THE SMART CAR RE-IMAGINED After Mercedes Benz’ less-than-stellar reception of their Smart Car vision, Porsche has taken up the gauntlet and begun to entertain the prospect of a viable Porsche “city car.” The proposed power plant is a scaled-down version of Porsche’s GT3RS 4.0 liter, 580 hp normally aspirated flat-six. The final flat-twin unit is expected to push out almost 350 hp, which should propel the 1600 lb. “city car” to ludicrous speed. Instantly. The proposed Porsche sure looks cute too; with those oversize 22” wheels, it almost looks like an old Hot Wheels© car. The millennials will love it. 31

Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

pring has definitely sprung already this year in Texas. In fact, it’s almost as if fall turned directly into spring and we forgot about winter entirely. That means our Maverick Region members are now exercising their Porsche vehicles regularly. In addition to our own club PCA Tour and Rally programs providing local scenic drives, the PCA Treffen Hill Country, Roadrunner Region Fiesta New Mexico, and PCA Parade are in locations that require longer periods of time in our Porsches - which is a good thing! Of course these Region and National PCA “scenic” drives remind me of two important dictums. The first comes from the mouth of that well-known sage, John Phillips (of Car and Driver fame). He reminds us that, “When you see ‘scenic’ on a map, it does not necessarily mean it should be seen.” I’m sure many of us have inadvertently gotten on that proverbial road to nowhere, often promised to have an unbelievable sight perfect for photographs with your Porsche. So, as someone who practices Carpe Viam, how do we let that happen to ourselves? S EN OPST N IO 21 AT RY TR RUA S GI B RE FE

Join in the fun! Join your fellow Porsche Club of America members at the 62nd Porsche Parade on July 9-15, 2017. Parade is PCA’s annual, weeklong event enjoyed by several thousand of your fellow members, who will gather this year in Spokane, Washington. Parade participants will enjoy Driving Tours and a Gimmick Rally to explore eastern Washington’s mountain vistas and high desert, the Concours at Riverfront Park, an Autocross, and a Time-Speed-Distance Rally to test your competitive spirit. When you want to step away from driving, Spokane is a walkable city with awardwinning eateries, the Cork District tasting rooms, craft breweries, and boutique shopping. Bring the kids, too, as they’ll be kept busy with activities such as model Porsche Concours, RC Car racing, and an ice cream social (well, adults can join in the ice cream, too).

And that brings me to my second dictum concerning “scenic” drives, or other long road trips on unfamiliar routes - don’t over rely on GPS. This common travel malady is typically referred to as “Death by GPS” or “why do we follow digital maps into dodgy places?”. Greg Milner shares, “It describes what happens when your GPS fails you, not by being wrong, exactly, but often by being too right. It does such a good job of computing the most direct route from Point A to Point B that it takes you down roads which barely exist.” Most of us use GPS as a crutch while driving through unfamiliar terrain, tuning out and letting that soothing voice do the dirty work of navigating. Matthew McKenzie gives the most salient advice for “scenic” road warriors, “Here’s a simple call for some common sense. Use GPS and other mobile devices the way they should be used: as simple conveniences. Carry a real map, understand the local climate, and don’t hesitate to turn around and go back the way you came if your directions don’t ‘feel’ right.” By this time it’s too late to ask for help. That’s some travel advice for your upcoming “scenic” road trips as you Carpe Viam.
