SPROCKETS: Zone 5 Presidents Meeting by David Robertson, Region President Recently, I attended the Zone 5 Presidents meeting. This meeting is held once a year to bring together the presidents of each region within Zone 5 to cover PCA Policy and share ideas between the regions on where they are finding success within the club. The Zone Rep and one or two national board members also attend to bring us up to speed on what is happing at the national level. There are 14 PCA Zones in the US and Canada, and there are 12 regions in Zone 5, with Maverick Region being the largest. There is a Zone website which you may not be aware of that links all of the Zone 5 regions: Zone5.pca.org. One of the big topics of discussion was 4-door Porsches and how to encourage those owners to participate in driving events.

A poll was recently conducted in the Northeast, in which 4-door owners were asked what type of driving event they would like to attend. A casual and light off-road driving tour was by far the biggest wish. And as luck would have it, our trek to dinner after the meeting actually turned in to one of these off-road tours. Since we were in NW Arkansas, there wasn’t a direct route to many places. As we headed out to dinner that night, about a 30-minute drive, the news came through that a tree was down on the main road. As it turned out there was a fairly rough dirt road through the hills and along Beaver Lake that would get us there. We parked the 911s and Caymans and all piled into Macans, Cayennes, and a Panamera. It was a blast! Another big topic was that of making sure that younger enthusiasts are joining the club and remaining active. The PCA Juniors program has been successful and there are plans to expand it further. One innovative idea has been PCA Simulated racing. These virtual races have been very well received, and you can find all the details at pcasimracing.org. We want to make sure that the Mavericks are set up for whatever the future brings us!

MAVS OF THE MONTH: Mike and Ian O’Hare Mike O’Hare joined our Maverick Region in October 2016 shortly after getting his 2014 Cayman S. 2 April

He quickly became a regular attendee at a number of our many events, and then took the next step by becoming an active volunteer, helping with parking and other tasks to support our members. His son Ian is also becoming actively involved in volunteering for our club. Since Ian got his driver’s license, he not only has taken a few turns on the street in the Cayman S, but also had the chance to drive it on the track at COTA in March. The two of them are diehard racing fans, particularly Indy cars, and they have attended many major racing events. Social Chair Debi Kruder adds, “I can’t thank this father/son team enough for their warm welcome to our fellow Mavs at our recent All Member Brunch! Mike assisted outside with parking, while Ian warmly greeted and checked members in. It’s just another example of how we can not only drive friendships but family too.”

2019 All Member Party: Member Voices Debi Kruder, Region Social Chair Over 350 Mavericks registered for what turned out to be one of the largest events to date: our first “Alle Mitglieder,” an All Member Morning! The Barn at One Preston Event Center in Gunter was filled with laughter, conversation, great food, and bubblies, as the driving tour groups began pulling in one by one. New members were treated extra special with their customized New Member tag on a Porsche lanyard and their own Maverick bag filled with a Porsche flag, pen, and mouse pad given by Autobahn; a Maverick logo microfiber towel and car cleaning product provided by Griot’s Garage and OCD’tailers; as well as lots of fun extras inside given by Haggerty! When entering the barn, the

Chicken and Biscuit bar with yummy fresh jams, fruit, and cheese greeted our Mavs and was the favorite of the morning, compliments of Phoenix Insurance (will be sure to order more next year!). The food choices continued with the Southern Breakfast Bar of warm scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and more, all catered by the most hospitable team at Low Country Cuisine. They kept our glasses full too, with delicious juices and fruit to add to our champagne at the Mimosa Bar. Many thanks to APEX Automotive for the Bloody Marys, which again were a Mav favorite! The Barn was abuzz, with over 320 Mavs attending the brunch, including two very special guests:

Caren Cooper, PCA National Past President, and Charles (Chuck) Bush, our Zone 5 Representative. They joined Region President David Robertson as he welcomed our new members, existing members, and proudly talked about all the club had to offer. Then, to great surprise, Caren Cooper announced that the Maverick Region was receiving the Actual Growth Membership Award for 2018, beating the multi-year recipients in Canada! Needless to say, the enthusiasm in the Barn, great food and friendships, not to mention the largest gathering of Porsches in recent club history, made it a magical morning. Many thanks to our sponsor, Autobahn Porsche, for this most successful All Member Morning!

Clockwise from upper left: A trio of club favorites: Roberto’s 356, Mike’s Aubergine 911 and the Kruder’s 356. Road Runner member Chuck Bush, Jim Hirsch and David Roberston with former PCA President Caren Cooper. The big white barn with some eye candy and some libations from the champagne bar.

All Member Party: A Record-Breaking Event! Linda Bambina

photo provided by Jason Olson

Over 350 Mavericks drove at least 40 miles to get to an amazing venue in Gunter: One Preston Event Venues. That broke all records for a Social Event; thank you, Debi! But then that’s just one more thing that is great about this club . . . we all LOVE to drive! Unless your GPS isn’t updated and can’t find the place! (But that’s another story!) Alan and I have been coming to these “Member” gatherings since the late 80s when the Board (maybe 10 people) just focused on inviting New Members (maybe 20 people) and served them chili at each other’s homes! The idea was to encourage the new folks to try out some of our other competitive events, and to meet the wives and encourage them to drive, too! I still try to do that at the Extravaganzas that have been happening the past decade or so. I love coming to these All Member Parties. I get to see so many of my old friends, look at the old scrapbooks (thank you Carey for taking care of them!) and then schmooze with all kinds of newbies about my crazy “vest” with the fancy sequined Porsche crest that I made for a Parade in ’93. OH! Parade! Ya gotta come to Parade, folks! (But that’s another other story!)

Maverick Region All Member Party by Caren Cooper, PCA National Past President I had the opportunity to attend the Maverick Region All Member Party at the Carriage House in Gunter. Although there were cloudy and foggy conditions the day before, the skies cleared for the event and the sun highlighted the magnificent display of Porsches – it was such a beautiful sight driving up and seeing the sea of Porsches. Not only was every model of Porsche represented, but every generation of Porsche enthusiast was in attendance. The attendance numbers were impressive with a packed house. This extremely wellrun event was a perfect example of an approach for engaging new members, with veteran members making sure the new members were welcomed and having a great time. It was truly special to take in this event, but I also had another motive for being there. Each year at the PCA national convention, Parade, there are seven National Award winners announced. It was confirmed the week

before this event that the Maverick Region will be this year’s recipient of the National Membership Award!

Out of 145 PCA Regions across North America, and with stiff competition from both coasts, the Maverick Region is the strongest growing region in North America – CONGRATULATIONS!!! FYI – during the week of Parade, the National Membership Award will be presented on Saturday evening during the Victory Banquet. All Maverick Region members in attendance will be asked to come to the awards stage to accept the trophy and pose for a photo that will appear in PCA’s Panorama magazine. Registration for Parade is open now at porscheparade. org – I hope you can join us!

Maverick Region All Member Party: Junior Edition by Brady Stogner, Porsche Junior ESQ We started off the Sunday morning pretty early, filled up our cups with caffeine, and headed off on our own backroads drive. We arrived at The Carriage House at

photo provided by Landon Stogner mobile app. I helped my Dad, Landon Stogner, at the new members’ check-in table by handing out goodie bags and Porsche flags. I was also in charge of the PCA Juniors’ table, where we had some really cool Hot Wheels to hand out. Low Country Cuisine cooked up a yummy breakfast; the biscuits were so amazing that they ran out quickly. I was so glad that I was able to get one.

There was some coffee and adult drinks available but I decided to stick just to juice.

One Preston Events Venue in Gunter, TX and started to prepare. We got all the tables set up and came up with a plan for the parking, which was cool, as we were going to park them along the big circle driveway. We knew so many more would be arriving soon, so we wanted to fit as many as we could. Then as people started arriving we got them checked in with our new 8 April

We had some members that helped show the new members around and I said hello to any other “juniors” that tagged along with their parents and pointed them to the Hot Wheels. After me and my Dad got a chance to eat, we had some time to walk around outside and check out all the Porsches that came, including Ajai’s bright yellow Carrera GT. Every time I see that car I want it more and more. That car is just so cool and beautiful. The party was fun, and we had a lot of new members, which numbered close to 100, and that’s really cool because that means we are growing more. I can’t wait till there is a day I come to one of our club events in the driver’s seat.

All Member Party Tour Recap By Mark Pitarresi, Tours Co-Chair February here in North Texas is usually a month during which we don’t even consider doing a driving tour for our Maverick Region members. We mainly avoid this month because the weather is too unpredictable. This year we decided to shake things up and do a Driving Tour to our All Member Party. The tour was 48.4 miles and about an hour long just north of Dallas. Temperatures were in the high 30s, with the streets still damp from light showers earlier that morning as people started showing up. Even with the cooler temperatures, 120 Porsches and 232 people attended this tour! That is just two Porsches short of a record number of cars for our region’s tour program. We also had 50 new members that had never attended PCA event before! The streets had mostly dried by the time our tour got underway. Attendees traveled through the towns of Van Alstyne, Weston, Celina, Pilot Point,

Tioga, and Gunter. Our destination was waiting with great food, beverages, and probably the largest gathering of Porsches that I had ever seen. I was the last group leader of the tour, and as we pulled into the parking lot I was blown away by all the Porsches. A special thanks to our tours volunteer team! Driving Tours of this size could not be managed without them! The group leaders were Brant Worrell, Young Slack, Jay Lynch, Tom Gomer,

photo provided by Michael Durovick

Mike Farrell, Ed Martelle, Derrick Tate, Scott Garwood, Ted Martin, Sam Bryant, and Mark Pitarresi. Signin attendants were Bill Elliot, Jennifer Gerbode, Ed Martelle, Mike Farrell, Scott Garwood, Brant Worrel, Sam Bryant, and myself. I am also excited to share some news with everyone about 2019. Sam Bryant is our new Co-Chair for the Tours program. He is very excited about it, and we welcome him to lead the program!

Your mind’s been racing. Catch up. Decades of dreaming, fulfilled instantaneously. The iconic 911 Carrera. Legendary handling, immediate power, and decades of motorsport heritage. It is the full measure of a sports car. Found only in a Porsche. Porsche. There is no substitute.

Mavs & Mochas: Mainstreet Bistro & Bakery by Bill Kruder

photos provided by Michael Durovick, Mike Mahoney & Julia Cleath

They say something in Texas like “if you don’t like the weather wait five minutes and it will change.” Well change it did, and just in time! Many Mavs woke up to a thunderstorm cutting its way across DFW at about 4:30 am, and depending where you were, lasted until about 7:30 am. You think that would stop this hardy group? No way! As the clouds began to clear away, Bill Orr, with his Park Place Mavs & Mocha support vehicle, was there ensuring we were ready to meet the few that might venture out. And venture out they did! Over 60 Porsches attended, some a little worse for wear with rain soaked streets, but as they say, “our cars don’t melt in the rain.” As the cars arrived, the coffee was ready and breakfast was being served inside at Mainstreet Bistro & Bakery in Richardson. And as it always seems every month, we see new and interesting people and their prized Porsches. We had our “Skittles” of GT3s, including Ajai Cadambi’s Lizard Green GT3RS. Glenn brought out his 1961 356B cab. We brought our new ‘96 993 known as the “Hoffman,” not to mention the 944s and 968s attending. You won’t want to miss next month’s gathering! Not only is it going to be at the legendary Zims Autotechnik, but we will also be celebrating 50 years of the 914. See you on April 13, rain or shine. It’s sure to be a good time!

In the case of ties, a random drawing determines the winner. Here are the questions for the February 2019 Trivia. We went with a Trivia that brings Q&A this month dealing with all kinds of items about older Porsches. The Winner this month, getting all 5 of 5 correct was Bill Orr. 2019 Autocross Series: Championship Event 1 by Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair Event 1 was held at one of the sites east of the Metroplex, Mesquite Memorial Stadium in Mesquite, TX. It was a cold and windy day but 90 drivers attended, nine in Porsches. The conflict with the DE and some others travels left many of the usual attendees out of town for this one. New Porsche attendees Dawn Marie Gray and Charlie Fick brought a Porsche Cayman GT4 and GT3 RS, respectively, to this one. Charlie did the first quick Porsche time today. Clay and Betty Perrine brought Betty’s beautiful orange 914 out, and Betty showed Clay how it’s done. We hope these guys all make it back to the next event, a MirrorCross at Mineral Wells. Mas Watanabe and Carolle Lui are going to make a fight of it in P3 this year.

As a note, the Event 4 has been moved from April 21 to May 5.

The new Porsche Classes this year makes the FOUR DOOR cars very competitive for performance index-adjusted first quick Porsche. Igor Tulandin, autocrossing since last season, has been tuning his Cayenne GTS while refining his car control skills and is the first four door to win First Quick Index Porsche ever at one of our events! Congratulations Igor! We all have to go after him the rest of the year. Second and third quick Index were Betty in her 914 and Doug Edney in his 996. Contact Mark Schnoerr for details, or go to autocross.com and sign up for one of the nine remaining events this season. The full calendar is posted to the left.

Maverick Drivers’ Education Series: February 2019 by Renee Hayden, DE Chair We had record participation and a wildly successful High Performance Drivers Education (HPDE) event at

MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, TX on February 23-24. Thanks to all who participated in the event, to those who participated in the charity parade laps benefitting Patriot PAWS, and a special thanks to Autobahn Porsche as our sponsor for the first DE of 2019. What a great weekend! The HPDE program succeeds because of the participants who come out to drive their cars the way they were meant to be driven, in a safe and fun environment, and because of the volunteers who give generously of

16 April

their time and talent. We hope you will come join the fun at our next HPDE on April 27-28. Registration opens on March 27 and the events fill up quickly, so register early! For April, we will be welcoming RAC Performance as our event sponsor. By the way, we have two volunteer opportunities available, which will allow you free HPDE participation. The first is our “work and drive” program, which involves working as a corner safety worker for a weekend (with training) and then driving for no registration fee in a future event. If this interests you, please contact Wayne Elliot at welliott911@gmail.com. The second is to volunteer as the H PDE Equipment Manager. This role involves setting up safety equipment before the HPDE and gathering everything back up at the end of the DE on Sunday. The equipment is currently stored at MotorSport Ranch. A pickup or SUV would probably be handy for this position. This is a staff position that will allow you to drive at the event for no registration fee. If you are interested in this role, please contact Renee Hayden at de@mavpca.org. See you in the corners soon!

Maverick Marktpreis is proudly sponsored by:

Maverick Marktpreis: 928 by Peter Wen “WANTED: Porsche 928, for attempted murder of 911.” What a headline that would have been? Of course that’s not exactly how it happened. Back in the ‘70s, Porsche was headed in a different direction. They needed a modern car to replace the aging 911 and to keep up with emission regulations. They wanted a new flagship vehicle with the best possible combination of a sports coupé and a luxury sedan. The result was the 928, a grand tourer with a water-cooled V8 engine. Porsche’s first production V8-powered model and the only coupé powered by a front-mounted V8 engine.

Excellence’s magazine’s Porsche Buyer’s Guide offered these price ranges for the 928: ’87-’89 S4 $12k-$22k ’78-’82 $8k-$13k ’90-’92 S4 $14k-$24k ’83-’84 S $9k-$15k ’90-’92 GT $16k-$26k ’85-’86 S $10k-$18k ’93-’95 GTS $40k-$70k

The 928 was loaded with technological advances and luxurious features. It won the coveted 1978 European Car of the Year award upon introduction. It was priced far above the 911 SC ($110k vs $75k in today’s dollars). Just 57,998 928s were built during the model’s 19-year production run (25k of which came to the US). Excellence magazine considered the 928 S4 to be “Best Value.” Only about 3,000 of the 928 GTS were produced, with just 482 examples coming to the U.S.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder

another but it had to be in Denver. Then Sadly we lost our friend Bob this past month. My first “conversation” was as an extra incentive they said, “We will with Bob back in September 2016. I had give you a Porsche dealership also.” never met him, but when I decided to Needless to say, we moved. Once we start the monthly piece I looked in our opened our mechanic said, “We need records for the oldest member and Bob to race one of these.” And we did! We popped up. Bob joined PCA in 1960; took one off the showroom floor and he was the longest living member with took the SCCA driving school, which uninterrupted membership. Needless to I guess at the same time signed us up say I had no idea who this man was. I with PCA. called him and suggested we meet for coffee. Well, gentleman that he was, he BK: So this was 1960 then? said “of course” but the humble man BH: Yes, think in the fall. Funny thing warned me: he didn’t understand why I was once we had taken the car off the would want to meet him. Let’s just say showroom floor we simply returned it it was a friendship that was meant to be. when we were finished, like nothing Fair to say it was one that I wished had happened. Not sure I could get would have lasted a lot longer. Since away with that today. our meeting on that hot July day we would meet for coffee every few months and that bond kept growing. Matter of fact we were lucky enough to purchase his last personal Porsche, the 1964 356C. Then the next year we decided to purchase a 914. One day with the help of Robert Kendrick, we found a 1971 on EBay, and after sorting thru all the pics, Robert said you would not believe this. The 914 was from Hagestad Porsche Audi in Denver, and with that alone I said that car is mine; we bid that day and won. So as fate would have it, we now have two Hagestad Porsches. Bob Hagestad and the number 95 934 So here it is what in was the first of a series of “interviews” that I would like to share with you . . . Bob Hagestad, owner member since 1960

1964

356C,

Bill Kruder: Bob, you have been a member of PCA longer than almost anyone in Maverick Region. What year did you join PCA and why? Bob Hagestad: Well, really I kind of joined by accident. My dad had a VW dealership in Cheyenne, Wyoming and he wanted to open another. However, VW said that they would let him have 20 April

BK: Wow! And to think PCA was only around for five years at that point, and Maverick Region wouldn’t even be founded until 1962. BH: Well like I said, we joined because we had just acquired the dealership and thought it might be fun to do a little racing. Of course I had no idea back then I would have moved here years later. BK: So you come from a car-guy family then? BH: I do. I didn’t mention that before my dad started selling VWs, he had a LincolnMercury dealership. I actually worked as a salesman for him. I think that was 1957, but I was terrible. Think he told me I needed to find another profession.

BK: Well how did that work out for you?

Right: The Hagested Volkswagen dealership.

BH: Funny how things work out, but about 1968-69, VW and Porsche came back and said “We want you to separate VW from Porsche.” And to do that they would add in Audi so we could have a Porsche+Audi store. Apparently my dad hadn’t given up on me yet, so he worked out a deal in which he would sell VWs if I would take the other “slower selling” cars. So that’s what we did. We opened up a new dealership. BK: So how did you end up in Dallas? BH: About 1987, VW asked if I would help establish a dealership here. I didn’t want to move, so for about three to four years I would go back and forth. Then about 1991-92, I took over Metro VW in Irving and was an active partner ‘til I retired in 2011. BK: Now tell me what was your first Porsche? BH: Really don’t have just one “first” because we would drive which ever we felt like off the showroom floor; kind of brings a smile to my face to think about that. BK: What do you own now? BH: I have a 1964 Dolphin Gray 356C. BK: Is this one off the showroom floor? BH: Oh no, I bought this one in 1984 from a couple in Denver who had gone to Europe, bought the car in Paris, and drove

it on vacation over there. They then brought it back and enjoyed it for another 19 years. They put 80,000 miles on it. BK: How many miles does it have on it now? BH: I’ve only put another 9000 miles on it since 1984. BK: What an incredible journey you have been on, with some of the best cars in the world. BH: Not bad I guess. But you don’t want to hear about my racing?

BK: And there’s the 935 too? BH: Well it was really a 934 that was converted to a 935, which they referred to as a 934.5 in those years. That was in ‘78 when we started at the 24 Hours of Daytona but DNFd. But then we came back at Sebring and led the race until we lost our brakes, but managed to come in second. Wow, and to think that I was only coming over to talk about some guy’s “tub” car!

BK: So you continued to race? Not just club races? BH: Oh, that was only the beginning. We bought the 904; I think only two were here in the States. We raced it in ‘64 at the 250-mile Daytona Continental, in which we finished fifth. This was really the start of my professional racing, actually getting paid. BK: We’ve talked about an RSR – how did that come about? BH: In 71 several of us went to Monte Carlo and stopped at the Porsche factory to look at a new car they were trying to sell; they had to sell fifty before they could race them. As it turned out it was the ‘72 RSR. I think I managed to get them to sell it to me for about $18k. BK: And how did that work out? BH: I brought it home and wrecked it in a practice run. So Peter Gregg had another car as a spare but it was painted in his livery so he sold it to me.

Above: Bob Hagestad attending the Porsche Grapevine opening along with David Robertson and Bill Kruder. Below: Bob and his 1964 Porsche 356.

BK: Peter Gregg like in Brumos? BH: That would be the guy alright. Trouble was, we couldn’t race in his livery, so we bought what is like floral kitchen contact paper and covered up his scheme. That was at Elkhart Lake. BK: How long did you race the RSR? BH: We raced the RSRs from about ‘73-‘77. I had some pretty good drivers driving for me and with me. BK: Anyone we would know? BH: Let’s see: Skip Barber, Jerry Jolly, John Paul, and Hurley Haywood. I might be forgetting someone, but these guys were good. BK: Something tells me there is more . . . BH: Yep! Then about ‘76-‘77 (I can’t remember for sure), we bought our 934 turbo. Think we paid about $50k back then for it, which was a lot, trust me. Hurley Haywood drove for me in all the one-hour races and I co-drove with him in the endurance races; we had some pretty good success in it. 21

Maverick Tour: Stop! Smell the Bluebonnets! By Mark Pitarresi, Tours Co-Chair Welcome to the second Maverick Tour for 2019! This year’s Bluebonnet Tour will be just southeast of Dallas. Ennis is the official Bluebonnet City of Texas. Typically the bluebonnets peak around the third week of April. However, this can vary year to year due to weather conditions and terrain. This year we have chosen Sunday, April 7 for this year’s tour. This time our Maverick Region will witness a sneak preview a week before the city of Ennis puts on their annual Bluebonnet Festival. That’s right -- this attraction is so popular that the city of Ennis actually celebrates it with an annual festival! It has been said that they have over 100,000 visitors that come to see their famous Bluebonnet trails in the spring for the wildflower show. The Ennis Bluebonnet trails are the oldest such trails known in the state. Country scenery, twisty roads, elevation change, long straights, and bluebonnets will be expected! The tour is approximately 1 hour 37 minutes and 68.8 miles long. We do have a rest stop on this tour. At the time this article was written there was no construction on this route. The tour starts at 10 am at Red Oak Middle School, located at 154 Louise Ritter Blvd. in Red Oak, TX 75154.

26 April

The tour will end at Bubba’s BBQ and Steak House, 210 S. I-45, Ennis, TX 75119. Bubba’s BBQ is famous for great food. They can accommodate about 110 people. Our tours are generally larger than that, but there are several other places to eat in the area. The Drivers’ Briefing will start at 10 am. Most of our tour members arrive early to socialize and take in the variety of Porsches. Arriving early also helps our volunteers in sign you in on time so the tour is on schedule. You can register for this tour at http://mav.pca.org/Events/ Tours.asp . You will have two classes to choose from. Select Vintage If your car is older or if you prefer a more relaxed tour. Select Modern class if you prefer the same tours we have been providing in the past. It is your choice, no matter the Porsche you drive, as to what class you select. After you register we will send you an email three days before the day of the tour with all the information needed to attend. We break up the driving tours into smaller groups and have a group leader that will guide you on the route. Typically no navigation is needed to attend -- just follow the car in front of you.

SP997: These Guys Love to Race by David Hodges

photos provided by Juha Llevonen

For me there is nothing like a race weekend. Nothing! The wave of the green flag just gets everything flowing. Hustling the car into Turn 1 never gets old, so very much alive, so very aware of every movement, every sound, tuned to the moment. We race... Man, do I love race starts. There is also that huge grin while returning to the paddock — win or

train is stock with extra cooling for the motor and PDK. Shocks are MCS with upgraded springs, drop links, swap bars, control arms, etc. We set the spec tire as Hoosier R7’s and when PCA negotiated their recent contingency deal with Hoosier Tire, they included SP997. This means that we are now are eligible to win Hoosier tires for points race podiums

Following the weeks of winter testing, we moved on to PCAs first 2018 Club Race at Sebring for our first showdown. Thomas (TJ) Kroehle got the first class win at Sebring and repeated with wins at COTA. Not bad for a Rookie X man. Barber will be the next event where we will have all six cars racing for the first time. This year we are also planning

lose. Taking a moment or two to reflect about how to improve for the next race, then out of the car to relive the race with your buddies: You did what? Wow... Nice move! Two years ago a few 911 RSA H class and SP996 racers (who had met at Texas World Speedway in their PCA DE days) began thinking of their next platform for PCA Club Racing. We started with the concept of a 911 body, stock drive train and relatively low cost to operate compared to a Cup car. A review of 911 build options pointed to the 2009-2012 997.2 S. It looked to have it all. A safe, fast, good looking steel bodied 911, and a PDK with the bullet proof DFI (9A1) motor. It topped the list of best options. SP997 began as a 2009-2012 997.2. We selected the 2009 S PDK due to it being the most common build and near the lower end of the 997.2 depreciation curve. The body is stock other than the rear wing, with interior stripped and caged, the drive

finishes. Thank you Hoosier and PCA... Well done! In late 2016 three cars were built by CJ Wilson Racing, for Paul Norwood, Clas Olsson, and Keith Jezek. They raced in K while learning about the cars and we developed the SP997 rules from the year of test and tuning. Andris Laivins is the team manager at CJ Wilson Racing, his team put a lot of hard work into developing the cars. Late last year CJ Wilson Racing built two more cars, for Chuck Bray and myself. John Gladwill at Porsche of Plano was instrumental in the design of the Kent Porter SP997 build delivered to TJ Kroehle. We spent several weeks during the winter break testing cars at Motor¬sport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. John Gladwill was a great asset due to his years of experience in race car set up. He tuned the suspension settings with Topp Racing providing track support and ECU flashing. Lap after lap we learned more about how to get the cars quicker through the low grip MSR turns.

to race VIR, Watkins Glenn, Road America, Laguna Seca and Daytona. Between Club Race events we plan to continue to develop the cars at COTA and MSR Cresson. We’ll be experimenting with different aero settings, tire sizes, spring rates, and possibly adding a limited slip differential. It has been extremely interesting working with this group of guys to develop the SP997 class. It is a great way to push yourself to a new level, to learn new skills and to get to know about more yourself and those around you. Drop by at the next PCA Club Race to say hello and maybe get a signed photo with your favorite SP997 racer or have a cold beer with us. If you have any SP997 questions, please feel free to contact me at: dmhodges911@gmail.com. I can provide contact information on any of the people involved with the current SP997 build. I am also the SP997 class advocate.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

This marks my 13th issue of Slipstream and it’s time we had a talk. I’ve been holding out on you. You might have always suspected it, but I haven’t always been completely honest. The past 8 months I’ve been leading a double life. I know, I know it’s time I come clean. As you might know by now, I am a classic air-cooled lover since childhood, but I’ve had a relationship with another. A water-cooled Porsche. With the engine in the front. And the transmission in the back. It was a little weird at first, but it got easier. I know it might come as a surprise, but I’m not ashamed at all. In fact, I kind of find it exhilarating. Everything is all new. The world seems more colorful, even the birds sing more sweetly. It might just be that I can hear them over the exhaust now, but let’s not kill the illusion. It’s amazing what a subtle shift in perspective can do. Things that once seemed impossible, are now a reality, like folding down the rear seats on a run

to Home Depot or valet parking without an explantation. I’m kidding, I don’t valet park. But as I’ve mentioned I do stupid things on occasion. And this car doesn’t punish me when I do something really stupid like, gasp, trail braking. I know, who would do such a thing in a Porsche? Me apparently. So, to the left I present the 1986 944 Turbo that I am the current proud caretaker of. This car has been pampered, never driven in the rain and only used on Sundays. Actually, any of you that know this car know better than that. It’s been driven as intended it’s whole life, now is no exception. Driven in anger and for pleasure. It’s the realization of the other boy-hood dream. The water-cooled one. And it’s so much more than I ever thought it could be. As a side note, it’s my son’s favorite and I guess I’m okay with that. As long as a Porsche is in his top three we’re doing just fine. Enjoy the drive! I know I do.
