irst and most importantly, let me again congratulate Wendy Shoffit on being honored as the Porsche Club of America Enthusiast of the Year at Parade. Those of you who know Wendy appreciate how well deserved this recognition is. For the new members who haven't met Wendy yet, I can tell you she is a role model for what a Maverick PCA member should be--active, involved and enthusiastic, a real pleasure to have on the board. As always, the Maverick members who attended Parade did a super job of representing our group. Since I was unable to attend, I will not attempt to list all the people receiving recognition lest I inadvertently leave someone out. I will leave that happy task to someone who can provide a first hand accounting. To change direction a bit, I have been reminded, on several occasions, recently that "It's all relative." I am writing this article from our deck in Breckenridge, Colorado where the thermometer reads about 75 degrees. Since we have been here, the average high has been in the low 70's and the average low in the low 40's. As the temperature starts to creep past the mid-70's some of the locals are starting to complain about the heat. It's hard to be sympathetic when I know it is pushing 100 degrees in the DFW area. As, it happened, the Viper club held a big gathering in Breckenridge that coincided with the Fourth of July parade. There were probably two dozen Vipers in the parade. Later that evening at a Fourth of July party, I was talking with the Vice President of the club. He informed me that many of the cars in the parade had not one, but two nitrous bottles hooked up to provide that little extra boost when needed. Keep in mind, these are cars that already have 500 cubic inch engines with 500 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque. As I said earlier, it's all relative.

. . . how fortunate we are to be able to drive such fantastic cars . . . I guess I can understand. Who among us hasn't wished for more horsepower, or better handing, or stickier tires? It seems that no matter where you fit into the spectrum, there is always something else to add to your "wish list." I suppose that's true, to a degree, with everyone, but most certainly with the people who drive their cars competitively. Whether it's a bone stock autocrosser or a GT club racer, everyone is looking for that extra edge. I think sometimes we tend to forget that the average driver on the street with an older model family sedan looks at any car with a Porsche badge as being a unique car, probably high on their wish list. With that in mind, it's probably appropriate to remind ourselves how fortunate we are to be able to drive such fantastic cars. The fact that we are able to be part of a group of people like the Maverick Region of the PCA makes it all the more fun.

Maverick Minutes by Michael Wingfield

L

anean Hughes hosted the July 2005 Maverick Region Board meeting on July 7, 2005. The July meeting had the following 15 members in attendance: Executive Council: Mark Gluck, Jeff Atkins, Michael Wingfield; Board Members: Lanean Hughes; Mike Brodigan, Bill Dawson, Dennis Chamberlain, Joe McGlohen, Wendy Shoffit, Tracey Gross, Ed Gross; General Membership: Jan Mayo, Brian Scudder, Teri Davis, Charlie Davis. Mark Gluck, VP substituting for President Rocky Johnson, called the meeting to order at 7:01 PM, and began the ‘round table discussion. Lanean Hughes: Parade was, “a LOT of chocolate!” A Hope Shelter update will come after the meeting next Thursday (7-7-05). The May Club Race had surplus funds, estimated between $6,000-$7,000, but the total is not yet set. Mike Brodigan: All Slipstream advertisers are finally current with payments. Talks continue with Steven Boyd (webmaster) about the prospect of adding advertiser links to the Maverick Region web site (http://www.pca.org/mav). Proposed concepts include: 1) Separate page of advertisers. 2) Popup Ads. 3) Banner Ads. The general consensus during discussion was that Popup Ads are bad and should not be used. Bill Dawson: Hill Country Region held a successful DE at MSR 6/25-26, using many of the Maverick Region DE Instructors. BMWCCA has a DE scheduled for 8/6-7, and will also use many of the Maverick Region DE Instructors. Dennis Chamberlain: Happy Hour at Mondo’s had ~40 in attendance, with lots of new members, and some “potential” new members. Plans more HH socials to be held in the mid-cities and Fort Worth, a recent oversight by the Mentor Program members. Jan Mayo: Maverick member John Galloway, a PCA transfer member from San Antonio, recently died. Jan wishes to express her and Maverick Region condolences to his widow Judy. Makes the motion for a $100 donation to the Hope Shelter in his honor. Wendy Shoffit seconds, and the motion carries. Joe McGlohen: The car belonging to the recently deceased member Ed Tix (’04 Parade Rally Master) has been sold to Steve Marshall of Hill County Region. Ray Luedecke has researched the replacement AX/TT radios and recommends buying the Icoms. Money ($3,000) was allocated at the June meeting to buy the radios. The club radios and flags were rented for $300 to the Hill Country Region for their MSR June DE. Likewise, the radios and flags will be rented to the BMWCCA for their August MSR DE. Brian Scudder: ~50 members on the 928 list, who will be hosting the “3rd Coast 928 Shark Gathering” September 23-25. Wants Maverick Region to place the event on the web calendar. The event will also include a tour and wants Maverick Region to provide the event insurance. Mark Gluck says he will submit the insurance request. Wendy Shoffit: RUF Auto Centre is hosting the “Porsche Front Engine Fest 2005” August 6, 2005. See their ad in Slipstream and on the website. Many Maverick members won awards at the 2005 Hershey Parade. The list of winners has appeared on the Yahoo group list (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/mrpca/), and will appear in Slipstream. At Parade, she “almost” got her fill of chocolate. The July Slipstream is at Ussery for printing. Proposes that the region consider hosting more events from “the good ol’ days,” such as wine tasting parties, road trips to Lone Star Region autocrosses, San Antonio tours, Colorado ski trip, or a Casino Night. 8

Teri Davis: There is a Photo Rally scheduled for July 23, 2005. A second rally in Grapevine is also in the works that will lead to the Post Parade Party. Charlie Davis: Enjoyed the 2005 Parade and the Chocolate Beer. He particularly enjoyed the “Look Back”at PCA roots and events. The region Truck/Van needs major work, discovered at the required state vehicle inspection, including transmission problems, leaks, carburetor rebuild, belts, and an air pump. Due to the size of the “box van,” service center selection is limited since the van will not fit in most service bays. Estimated repair cost is $800-$1000.Wendy Shoffit makes the motion the region allocate $1,000 for van repairs. Tracey Gross seconds, and the motion carries. Tracey Gross: After taking over the Goodie Store from Robyn Howard, generated a Goodie Store inventory showing a total of about $2,042 in merchandise. She has $1,000 allocated from the April Board meeting to purchase new inventory. The Goodie Store has lots of ’04 Parade items, which will be on sale at the ’05 Post Parade Party in August. She will price helmet bags as a Goodie Store item.Wants the Goodie Store online on the Maverick Region web site, with a Paypal account to accept orders. Will contact Steven Boyd (webmaster) for information and feasibility. Mark Gluck: The Photo Rally has insurance. Jeff Atkins: Have not received the June bank statement, but is sure “we have money.” Wendy Shoffit will host the August Board Meeting at her home. Meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.

his was our first happy hour at Mondo’s in almost two years. Monda Degan had called on all the new members and apparently no one was able to tell her no, because out of 42 attendees, almost half (including spouses) were new or recent members attend-

ing their first event. The actual new members for April, May and June included Wally Totten (2004 Boxster), Jose and Monica Quinones (2005 911 S Cab), Tom & Mary Murrin (2002 911 S4), Pat and Pete Meldrum (1997 911), Peter Lin (2002 911) and Mike and Arlene Fricke (2005 911S). Whew! Add to that Clint and Judy Blackman, who attended a couple of weeks in advance of purchasing a 2005 Arctic Silver Boxster. Clint and Judy are friends of mine who were in the market for a Boxster. They happened to come across a Slipstream, and said they found my name “plastered all over it” (a bit of an exaggeration). So they called me up and asked if they could come to the happy hour. They said that their decision

to acquire a Porsche was cemented by the good feelings they got from our members that night. So, we now have a couple of great new members.

For our August 18 happy hour we’re heading to a new Addison restaurant that just recently opened – Go Fish. Hope to see you there!

Passion and Performance by Mike Holloway, Slipstream Managing Editor

P

WS: Editor of Slipstream (sound familiar, Mike?). Lanean Hughes talked me into it over a lunch of Mexican food and margaritas. I still have a headache from that one! MH: That's it! Now I know how I going to find a replacement, get them sloppy on burritos and drunk on Cuervo! Brilliant!!! What was your first event that you went to? WS: The first event we ever went to was the New Members' party in February of 1998. I still remember being apprehensive about going there and meeting what I thought were going to be snooty people. Boy was I ever wrong! MH: You’re one heck of a racer, when did you start (your first DE, TT and AX)? WS: Thanks for the compliment, but I have a long way yet to go. The first AX I ever went to was James' first, as well, in 1998. I sat along the sidelines and watched him drive the C4, chomping at the bit. We've driven together at AXs and TTs ever since. I didn't DE until March of 1999 and have done a few since. They are tons of fun and I love them, but my true passion is for AX. MH: Which car do you prefer to race with? WS: By far, the better car to drive is the black 1978 911 SC. It's lighter and more nimble than the white 1990 C4. The C4 is simply too heavy and lumbers along, despite its greater horsepower. MH: You seem to know a bunch about Porsche Cars, have you always been interested in cars or was this something you evolved into due to ownership? WS: The knowledge really has come from the club. Before we joined, I didn't know a 356 from a 914 from a 928. I knew nothing about Porsches, other than that James wanted one more than anything else in the world. Incidentally, I was the one who convinced James to buy the car in the first place. He'd wanted one since he was 7 years old. He was driving a Mitsubishi 3000GT, but was looking for something different. I told him he should buy his dream car, a Porsche. He was afraid that once the dream was fulfilled; there would be nothing left to look forward to. I then asked him, "What about you're NEXT Porsche?" Shortly after that, we had our first. A few years later, we bought the black car. What's next? I'm hoping for a 997, but it might be awhile...

organization or a club we do not realize what goes on behind the scenes to make it run. The Maverick PCA has been blessed with a bunch of highly motivated, highly talented and down-right great people. The body of the membership enjoys many different events and hopefully this newsletter that would not be possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of a few dozen members. I have the opportunity to write about someone in the Porsche community that really stands out. This month, I was going have a piece done on an entrepreneur and publisher. After working on the other articles that are in this issue it struck me that one of our own has really exemplified that very nature I am always trying to capture. Wendy Shoffit. I first met Wendy back in December with Dennis Chamberlain and Matt Platts at the Cracker Barrel in Lewisville. I had just started with Slipstream and Matt thought it would be a great idea to have us all meet. I knew Matt had talent and I quickly learned that Dennis and Wendy were no slouches. Normally when I take something on I want to be sure I can be the best at it. After meeting these three I knew I had a long way to go. Wendy had energy and ideas that went further than what would be normal for a completely volunteer organization. It was obvious this woman was passionate about Maverick PCA. I was in very good company I 'fix'n' to learn a lot in the issues to come. WS: I know that you're wanting to put this in this next issue, but I'm feeling really uncomfortable with the amount of times my name is appearing in this issue. In favor of variety, is there someone else you can interview or something else you can write about? I'm happy to answer these questions if you think someone else might find it interesting, but maybe it could be saved for next month? MH: Short answer Wendy...no. The passion you have for Maverick PCA should not be ignored, it should be celebrated. We all go through life putting in the bare minimum sometimes. Every now and then something creates a spark and we become focused. It turns from a hobby, to a vocation to a passion. Few people have that 'passion' thing. You are one of those people. Remember, the status quo protects itself by challenging all on-comers! WS: I've said what I needed to.You make the decision. It's your article. MH: Good, I'm glad you see it my way. I always find that the world is a much better place when I get everything I want. Any way I could get you to commit to that concerning Slipstream? Just kidding! When did you get involved with PCA? WS: James and I joined the club in December of 1997. Jasmine was not quite a year old then. MH: What was your first thing you volunteered for? 10

Parade Enthusiastically! By Wendy Shoffit To top it off, after dinner, PAG/PCNA unveiled a huge surprise…the official “Porsche Club Coupe” car designed specially for PCA members. Only 50 will be made and one will be given away to a lucky PCA member. I’d give you the website address, but that could give you false hope that you might win MY car! ;) Sunday held the most amazing concours I’ve ever seen in my life! Not only were the cars unbelievable, but Jerry Seinfeld even came to the show (see picture). ] Included in the show were a 917 longtail, 917/30, the 1960 #804 Formula 1 car, *several* sexy GT1s (only a handful of these were made and sold for around $1 million), and so many more that I couldn’t possibly list them all. You should have been there. Although all the concours awards were presented on the field (group winners even on a Pebble-beach-style ramp), the banquet was very nice. Karl Ludvigsen, author of Excellence was Expected, spoke much to the delight of his audience. That evening, the national awards were presented, including “Enthusiast of the Year” for the individual member who demonstrated the most enthusiastic participation within PCA for 2004. As the description was read, I was stunned. They were reading MY profile! My mouth was open so wide, I started to draw flies. I happily accepted the award from a group of past Enthusiast winners, including our own Lanean Hughes, who is now the national awards chair. Maverick member, Fran Ussery, has also won this award in the past. I’m still reeling at being grouped with those wonderful people. The huge trophy even comes with its own custom designed box so big it needs wheels! Wow.

xactly 1459. That’s how many miles it is from my house to Hershey, PA. That’s how many miles I had to tow the Porsche, for the first time ever without James. His work situation meant he would have to fly to PA during the middle of the week, instead of drive with Jasmine, her best friend, Kailee, and me. Aye aye aye! Feeling nervous, I asked Ed and Jan Mayo to do me a favor and caravan with me, in case something happened. Without flinching, they both heartily agreed asking only, “so, what’s the favor?” Great people… great friends. Not only did they caravan, but Ed drove nearly half of the time, with Jan following in their silver 911. Fortunately, there are zero incidents to report… could be a first in long distance trailering history.

What can I say about Hershey? It was a dream come true for a chocoholic like me. The rumors are true… you really CAN smell the chocolate anywhere outside. Yummmy. I believe for the first time in my life I might have gotten my fill of chocolate that week. Simply amazing! The biggest challenge all week? Trying to navigate the halls, elevators, many buildings, and stairways in the Hershey Lodge. Holy cow! I had to start leaving a trail of Hershey kisses to find my way back to my room. Okay… back to Parade. I think the chairmen, Manny Alban and Bob Gutjahr, might have learned from us last year how to be mavericks. They started the week’s activities off a day early with an amazing Welcome Party… 50’s style. Porsche AG and PCNA sponsored the evening, complete with a soda shop, hair salon, celebrity impersonators, and “The Fabulous Grease Band.” More people danced than I’ve ever seen at a banquet. It was a blast!

Jasmine competed on her scooter at the kids autocross.

Peter Porsche chats with Jerry Seinfeld at the concours. The next two days had the TSD rally, the gimmick rally, and the Porsche Club Academy day (all the tech sessions rolled into one day). Considering that I had a black Porsche with a roll cage, no back seat, no air conditioning, and two kids to deal with in mid-90 degree weather. I didn’t think a rally seemed like much fun. So, the girls and I went to Chocolate World and Hershey Park instead. Although I didn’t get a trophy for either of those events, I attended the Rally banquet to celebrate with Mavericks and friends who did win and got to see a presentation by Kevin Buckler of the Racer’s Group. Very cool. Later that night (shortly after midnight) James finally arrived. Although he had missed a lot of the event, there was still much more to do. The autocross started on Wednesday, but we weren’t going to run until Thursday. Several fellow Mavericks did autocross that day and did extremely well, even in the rain (see the list of winners).

James accepts his autocross trophy. They started the week’s banquets with the 50’s theme, showing wonderful video footage from that decade. They continued the week, adding another decade to each banquet. They encouraged attendees to dress in appropriate attire. The 70’s (Rally) banquet even had a costume contest. Oh my… there were some grand costumes. All in all, the week’s theme was fun, fun, fun! Jasmine and Kailee ended up with so many RC cars, dolls, stuffed animals, and other door prizes that we nearly had to pile stuff up on top of the Expedition to get it all home! So, another year’s Parade has gone by and we had to again say goodbye to friends we might not see until

James and Wendy in their best duds for the Victory Banquet. Later that afternoon was the Parade of Porsches through Hershey. Over 400 cars signed up for the parade and I heard it was one of the most remarkable there has ever been, with people literally lined up along the streets to watch. With the aforementioned problems driving our car in the heat, we passed on that one for a trip to Zoo America with the girls. I heard we missed out on a great event, though, from Jan and Ed who were in the thick of things. We autocrossed on Thursday afternoon. It turned out to be a very fun twisty turny course, with the average time around the 1:05 mark. James took 2nd place out of 22 drivers in class I4M (58.973 sec.) and I took 1st out of a mere 3 women drivers (1:00.202). Guest speaker that night was the amazing Porsche racing legend, Vic Elford. He has a great sense of humor and was by far the most entertaining speaker, in my opinion. As if that wasn’t enough for the week, Friday had the tech quiz in the morning, the volunteer party (for those who worked 2 or more worker shifts) in the afternoon, and the Victory Banquet that evening! While James had to work scoring the quiz, I decided to take it and see what would happen. Amazingly enough, I got 67 of the questions right, giving me a 2nd place victory in the mid-911 class. The top ladies’ score was 75 points (Debbie Cooper)... surprisingly, I wasn’t too far off! That was the third time that week I was caught off guard. It was a great Parade! That night the speaker was Scott Atherton, President & CEO, of Panoz Motor Sports Group &

American LeMans Series. Man, how did they get so many big names? Did it have something to do with it being the 50th Anniversary or some such? My luck ran out, though, later that evening as someone else won the trip to Germany. Shoot! Maybe next year in Portland.

next year. James and I are still in discussions about whether we’ll make the trip to Portland, but rest assured that if we do, we’ll have an absolute blast! Maybe you can join us next time! 15

Hershey Parade 2005 By Jan Mayo big hair (and butt shots that would NOT now be politically correct) and more off road excursions than I’ve ever seen in one sitting. No wonder we have so many safety precautions now days. For some reason the apparent availability of video clips from the 80’s and 90’s were a little thinner, but the people and places were becoming more recognizable because I WAS THERE! ! !

My week started out with a special luncheon for past PCA Presidents and past Parade Chairs. The room was filled with such special people I was in awe. We were introduced to some folks that were active 30 and 40 years ago, one gentleman was both PCA President AND Parade Chair at the same time. Yes, it was a simpler time, but still the commitment to that combination was indeed inspiring. But the best part was the 50 year commemorative pin that we each were given. I was proud to have worn mine all week and be able to chat with and hug the others throughout the week.

Team “Swank” of the Maverick Region

Then there was the Pebble Beach ramp. The class and division winners rolled their cars up the ramp for trophy presentation and a photo opportunity not to be missed. That was really grand. The evening banquets started the reminiscing with a 1012 min video of each decade of Parades, starting with the 50’s. The fact that the Welcome Banquet was adrift in poodle skirts and VO5 helped set the mood. The videos of the 60’s and 70’s were full of gymkhana’s, 18

Each day presented something exciting, but the best thrill was the concours banquet’s presentation of the 2004 National Enthusiast of the Year. It was within the first 3 words that I recognized the submission Dee Lersch and had I sent in. Wendy’s mouth was starting to drop and I was bouncing up and down in my seat… I couldn’t sit still. We had to wait for several more sentences and the announcement of her name before we could whoop and holler. By that time I know everyone around our table wondered why I didn’t just get up and GO to the bathroom. No one could be prouder of this wonderful lady than I am.

OW! What a trip!! Parade has always been the biggest sensory overload I’ve ever experienced and this year was even better. Being the 50th anniversary of Porsche Club of America and the Porsche Parade they had many extra details that made it so outstanding.

If you have never been to a PCA Parade you need to seriously consider it. I think you’ll find, as I have, that once you start you’ll want to keep on going. In my 21 Parades I have been given a grand group of friends that I look forward to seeing every year. I have gone to places I never would have gone to and built a life time of wonderful memories.

Father’s Day Picnic by Ed Mayo

ep, if you came to the Father’s Day picnic on Sunday, you missed the whole thing. Just to see who reads Slipstream and who doesn’t, it was decided to have the picnic on Saturday this year. Believe it or not Dave and Doris Casey actually enjoy having the mob come to their house once a year (but only once a year!).

Even the kids had a good time. Of course Chef Dave, fresh from his night job at Jack-in-theBox, did the honors of cooking the burgers and hot dogs, and this year he was showing off his new built-in grill. If the water in the pool was just a little warmer, the place would be perfect!

Jan Mayo and Grandaughter Regan

At some point during the day there was a water balloon toss for the kids, but I wisely stayed away from that, kids and water balloons are a dangerous combination.

The weather cooperated with some pleasant June temperatures, you know, mid-nineties, no need to bring a sweater. Of course the kids really enjoy the pool, although I swear Dave must dump bags of ice in the pool the morning of the event. How else can the water be that cold after a month of June temperatures? It didn’t appear to bother the small humans though.

Joel ‘Concours’ Nannis Holding Court Handling a Porsche is Like Catching a Water Balloon... Joel Nannis drew the short straw this year and was the concours judge. He even had score sheets to add that air of authenticity to the process. I thought Joel did a wonderful job of judging and, no, this has nothing to with the fact that my car won its class. I narrowly beat out Michele de Jong’s ’70 911 and my daughter, Michele’s, ’72 911. I think I had shinier valve stem caps. Richard Cross won the 356 class, but I think its time some of you other 356 owners come out and give him some competition. (Hint!) 22

So we came to that time when we must say our farewells so the Casey’s can finally have some peace and quiet. Ahhh, but we’re not done yet, part of the way home my elder granddaughter (youngest granddaughter is only year old, and doesn’t do drawings yet) realized she had left a hand made, personalized Father’s Day drawing for Dad at the Casey’s, so a quick U-turn and back we went. Thank goodness the clean–up hadn’t started yet. Thanks to the Caseys, as always for opening up their home to our mob!

Mineral Wells Time Trial #4 & Autocross #3 By Lisa Steele

W

hat a weekend at Mineral Wells! It all started a week before when Mark (my hubby) tells me that he has to go to Tokyo for business the same weekend as Time Trial #4 and Autocross #3. I had already decided that I was not missing any more events, so I had to learn very quickly how to hook up the trailer to the Suburban, load the car on the trailer and tie it down so I could make the journey to Mineral Wells alone.

Lisa Steele was glad she came out . . . and that she took TTODL for Saturday. Friday afternoon rolls around and I head out the door to start my loading. Okay, I can honestly say that I don’t love spending fifteen to twenty minutes trying to back up the Suburban “just right” to get the hitch (I have another choice word for this little metal ball) aligned with the trailer. I know I promised Mark that I would take things nice and slow, but this was getting slightly frustrating. Once the trailer was attached, I prayed that the trailer was actually following the truck as

Don’t forget to check your Season Point Totals to make sure you will qualify for a trophy to be given out at Founder’s Day!

24

I drove around to the garage…it was. Yeah! Now to the easy part of putting the car on the trailer and getting her all tied down. This really wasn’t too bad, as I had done this part before under the supervision and very attentive eye of my husband. The whole process took a little over an hour, but I was not going anywhere until I made sure “the baby” was as tight as she could get. I could not do this without the wonderful help of Mike Lockas who agreed to stop by and check on me. He was able to give it that last little pull of a notch that I just couldn’t get. Thanks Mike! Once in Mineral Wells, the weekend was looking up to be a great time of racing. Saturday was a little slim with number of persons in attendance. In some corners, we only had one person. Before I could give the car a good go – around, I had to make sure I checked over ALL items on the list Mark left for me – a “honey-do list” if you wish: oil at top of line, anti-freeze between Min.-Max, brake fluid above Min, all hoses away from belts, belts not frayed or loose, no motor oil leaks, check exhaust pipes and muffler, check front spoiler for nothing hanging, check tire pressures, torque lug nuts, check brake pads, and check tire wear. Yep, looks good! Does Mark actually think I am going to jack up the car to change brake pads if they were worn??? No worries, I had the support of about five men to help me out if I needed it. Everyone was so supportive, especially Bryan Bell and his father-in-law, Henry, who wanted so badly to fix some hanging molding for me. It wasn’t on the list, so I assumed it was probably okay and in the end the “fix” was some handy duct tape. I loved Charlie Davis’ comment, “If you were cuter, you would have about twenty men helping you out.” Sorry, I know I’m no Danika and besides, who could look cute with all the grease, sweat, and the black gunk I had all over me from checking Mark’s list. I had the BEST weekend!! Thanks, Guys!
