My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Slipstream Managing Editor nce again, dear readers, I’m going to revisit my rant on upcoming events. There’s so much to pick from! Real soon now there’s a Murrrder Mystery dinner – Aug 4. Tracey has said that everyone has so much fun at these. There are always the lunches, and don’t forget the Happy Hours. See you at Razzoos??

Some of my favorite events are Teri’s rallies. This next one on Aug 18 is a walking rally in and around the exhibits of the Nasher. Not only will this be great fun, but you can earn some culture points at the same time. Keep a watch right here (or close by, anyway) for the next upcoming concours event, tips on how to prepare your car for that award wWinning shine, and more on the search for people looking for that thrill of being a JUDGE! Want a long weekend in the heart of American History? Consider the PCA Escape to Chantilly, Virginia. It even sounds romantic. More culture points along with some fun driving and wonderful Porsche people – What could be better? Periodically our advertisors host an event and August 18 is a Service Event at Park Place. Catch my Draft by James Shoffit, the Maverick Region President was thinking a lot about Parade (our Porsche Club National Convention) and how we can encourage Mavericks to go out and try it. I was trying to figure out what exactly the draw was for those of us that are so addicted to the national event and how we can share that with other members of the club who may not have tried it yet. But it isn’t really ONE thing that I look forward to. It is the combination of things that all roll together to make each Parade a unique and wonderful experience.

I

First of all there are the national level competitions. Wendy and I love competing (some of you may have already gathered that!) and doing so against Porsche nuts from around the country multiplies our fun. Even when we don’t do well, we have a great time trying. And you might be surprised at how well you do! My very first Parade, I ended up with a trophy in Tech Quiz, and I had no idea I even knew anything! Another reason we enjoy Parade is the friends we get to see there. You add new people to your circle of friends every year. It is nice catching up with them, seeing what cars they have now, how their kids have grown, and what they have been up to the past year.

like-minded people is amazing. We get to stay at fabulous hotels, at reasonable costs, and every trip up and down the elevator brings you more people with Porsches. And the areas we visit are all unique and have a flavor all their own. You can spend hours (or days) exploring the surrounding region, finding all kinds of wonderful places to shop and eat. Now, I understand Parade isn’t for everyone. Not everyone can be as passionate about these silly cars as I am. And not everyone wants to spend a week or more of their vacation time doing this type of thing. But if any of this sounded interesting to you, it is time to start planning. Make sure you have allocated some vacation days, and start looking at your driving routes to Charlotte, NC, now (or you can even fly in – we have quite a few people do that as well). And kids are MORE than welcome at Parade – it makes a fantastic family vacation, as there is plenty for kids of all ages to do. And if you have any questions at all, I think you know how to reach me. But one of the things Wendy and I look forward to the most is the drive out there. I know lots of people will disagree with us, but we thoroughly enjoyed our 3,600 miles of towing a Porsche this year. Each Parade is in a different location so we get to drive on new roads, see new sights, and spend time together in a completely different way. No phones, no email, no job distractions, no kitchen to clean – time to clear your head and think, and talk about all those things you wish you had time to discuss. Not to mention that on the way there we took Jasmine to Carlsbad Caverns, and on the way back we visited the Grand Canyon and Canyon de Chelly. But why would you, the first timer, be interested in going? One of the neat things that new Parade attendees enjoy is meeting Peter Porsche. He is the son of Ferry, and has attended over 20 of the recent Parades. He is very friendly, and is always smiling and signing autographs and posing for pictures. He is very approachable and loves Parade, Porsche Club members, and Mavericks in particular! Another reason you might want to go is to try something new. Even if you went to the Fort Worth Parade in 2004, going to an out-of-town Parade is a completely different experience. It is like taking a French class versus studying in France for a semester. Maverick Minutes

M

averick Region board meeting on July 10, 2007…

In attendance: James Shoffit, Mark Gluck, Bob Kuykendall, Denny Payne, Lisa Steele, Tracey Gross, Andrea Bell, Bryan Bell, Joel Nannis, Charlie Davis, Teri Davis, Travis Howard, Clay Perrine, Jan Mayo, & Wendy Shoffit. James called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. James reported that Maverick will host the National Winter Board Meeting on Feb 2-3, 2008. No information yet on where or the exact schedule. Eagle’s Canyon has had a setback. The recent rains have damaged the paving and repaving is underway. Three of the turns will be made faster and safer. Bryan Henderson is the Chief Driving Instructor at Eagle’s Canyon. James reported (with help from Joel) that Keith Olcha was working on sponsorship. He then discussed the need for “keeper” trophies for the Selcer Award recipients. Finally, James (again) asked for volunteers for the Addison, Bedford, and Plano lunches. We need members who will attend and be contacts for these events. Wendy gave a lengthy and excellent Parade report. I’ll not report all that, as it will be in the next issue. I WILL report that MR received the Public Service Award for our efforts getting the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House constructed. Jan asked if we want to continue sponsoring the Kid’s Events at Parades. We decided that it has to be the decision of the Parade organizers, as they might have a “paying” sponsor. She also asked for “stuff ” for Slipstream. Lisa agreed to write an article about the Father’s Day Picnic. Joel reported we have 1210 members at the moment. He recently sent out 35 renewal letters… no responses yet. Bob reported that he and Dennis had talked with Bob Knight regarding the pending audit of our financial books, who questioned the wisdom of doing this. His belief was that a $1000 audit is not worth much. We discussed this and decided that since most of our current receipts are via PayPal (directly to the bank account) and checks, with very little cash involved, that we would take Bob Knight’s advice. Besides, we trust our treasurer. He also told us that the recent Club Race lost over $10,000 which was due primarily to a 40% drop in Club Racer attendance. Denny, subbing for Christy, said that the logo hats sold well at the recent autocross. Denny, subbing for Denny, asked for more Picture of the Week submissions. Lisa led a discussion of Slipstream rates. It’s been a few years since we’ve bumped them. We have a waiting list of advertisers and our circulation is higher. Production costs continue to rise. Lisa agreed to get with Keith Olcha to devise a consistent policy for advertisers and sponsors regarding Slipstream

ads. Ocassionally our major sponsors ask for specific ad locations. Bryan reported that TimeTrial #5 and Autocross #5 were well attended, in spite of the threat of rain. Water donations totaling $65 were given to Hope. The last official TT/AX events will be on September 15-16 at Mineral Wells, then the Charity AX on Oct 14th at TMS. He reported that we had decided to hold the Concours on the same day as the autocross. We have not yet decided on the schedule or the venue for the Concours. There was a minor injury at AX #5 during the worker change so we decided it would be a good thing to purchase a new first aid kit for the Truxster. Mark reported that we did have insurance for the above autocross…and for all other events too. Tracey agreed that the Father’s Day Picnic was good. She has scheduled the Post-Parade Dinner at Saltgrass Steakhouse in Grapevine. She reported that we have an offer to host the Holiday Party in Ft. Worth again, but we hope to have an alternate location near Dallas, as alternating seems to be the norm. Any Dallas County volunteers? Charlie requested that he not be listed as Club Photographer in Slipstream, but rather as the AX/TT Rules Committee Chair. This prompted several other changes to Pg 4. Teri, performing her proofreading duties in arrears, noted


Yokohama Tire Tech Winner by Doug Molny ast month I received a call from our friends and newlyweds Mark and Monda Hanna asking me to join them for a tech session at Discount Tire. I must admit I have not been to a tech session for a couple of years but the mention of a raffle for a set of Yokohama tires was too much to keep me away. Somehow I talked my wife into going with me. Now, Melinda is not one who would normally sit in on a meeting at a tire store with a bunch of guys talking about camber, caster, tire temps, etc. However, I told her that Mark and Monda were going and that I just had a feeling we needed to go. I thought we would hook up for dinner with them after the session. The session went on for a couple of hours and turned out to be very informative with several executives from Yokohama there as well as Colby McGehee, the Texas Rep, who is a knowledgeable young man who could answer our questions about racing and tires.

They asked us to write our names down on paper and threw them into a hat for door prizes. I won a coffee mug and Melinda won something else small. Then all the names were placed back

into the hat for the grand prize and Melinda's name was pulled out again. Man, was I lucky my wife did not need tires for her Lexus! She was happy to pass the gift to me for my 1995 993 Cab, which was desperate for new tires. Discount Tire was very nice to accommodate me and I now have a set of Yokohamas Avain Sports. Believe me they are great tires - excellent dry and wet traction. This included mounting, balancing, and the guys at the store even cleaned the wheels! This has to be the best gift I could have imagined and I, of course, gave my friend Mark the coffee mug. I could see in his eyes he wanted the tires and I hope next time he wins. Yokohama also sent me a Porsche Factory DVD of the 356 being built from scratch, which must be from the very early 1950's. A very cool film. I even thought I spotted a 912 somewhere in the film (maybe a prototype). I will have some copies made. By the way, I need to thank Mark Hanna for calling me and inviting me to the tech session. Thanks to Discount Tire for the set of tires and for sponsoring a great event.

Maverick Minutes Cont. there were two “meeings� in the current calendar. She reported that the rally school had eight cars, made $20.40 profit, and produced a winner at Parade. Travis thanked James for completing the autocross results. He also complemented the course designer of the last autocross (Joel) who did it with only five pylons! Clay attended because he has agreed to be the 2008 Autocross Chair. He had some suggestions for changes to the rules. Charlie explained that as the Autocross Chair he will automatically be on the Rules Committee. One of his key points was increasing the number of runs above 5. Clay will start scheduling AX events as soon as the track events are scheduled. James adjourned the meeting at 9:12 PM.

From the Tech Q&A - 928 by John Veninger - 928 Tech Advisor uestion: This vehicle has been in storage for over 10 years and just recently restored to running condition. The rear quarter panels appear to have warped from time and I would like to find out what options are available to rectify the problem. The material over the panels are still in great shape (no cracking).

Q

nswer: I know of three options to solve the rear warped panel issue. The first is the least labor intensive; buy a pair of good used ones. The second option is to use epoxy resin and glass cloth to fix the warped area. The epoxy will soak into the fiberboard and make it stiffer to prevent future warping. The last option is to rivet a 2� wide strip of metal the full length of the panel on the underside as close to the edge as possible. This will straighten out most of the warping.

A Newbie’s First Rally School by Peg Kierstead hen my husband, Steve, and I (two brand new members of the PCA’s Maverick Region) arrived at the Hackberry Country Club for the June Rally School, we knew we were in a good place. Long-time members and other newbies were all welcoming and pleasant people.

As she went Teri Davis diagraming an intersection through her detailed review of General Instructions, Supplemental GI’s, the glossary, and the pink sheet we found ourselves lost in a flurry of papers, but we relaxed when Teri assured us it’s a game and it’s about having fun. Getting into our Cayman and lining up for the start had a calming effect, and I felt a thrill as I counted down the seconds to our start time. (I must add “Note to Newbie: basic rules of safety still apply.” We almost pulled through a stop sign without realizing cross traffic did not stop.) It was fun working our way through the transit zone and leg one; we looked for road signs, remembered notes, and compared our time against the instructions. New phrases and concepts rolled off our tongues: CAST, notes, counting pauses, “Is this a T?” We arrived at Checkpoint One in good time, and then it all fell apart. There was a road we couldn’t find, despite two attempts, and we just drove back to the country club.

There we found a lively discussion in progress. A poll was taken: “Did you find Belt Line?” A strange mantra was heard: “ONLY ONLY ONLY.” (This refers to a lane sign with three arrows describing the only way each lane could turn. Many people never saw it; apparently the group found a trap Teri hadn’t intended.) We newbies also learned an important fact: checkpoints are not indicated in the instructions. Then the rally mistress returned, recapped the discussion of misses and problems, and put Driver the whole thing in focus. We learned where we James Shoffit had gone wrong and that we weren’t the only Steve Kierstead ones fooled. David Salaki Dave Frick Steve and I left the rally glowing with the Ron Havelaar aftereffects of time well-spent, happy to have Catherine LaCroix met some nice people and to have challenged Henry Fells ourselves with a new activity. My First Porsche Club Article by Grant A. Gosler reetings, Porsche fans. A quick introduction should be in order here. My name is Grant Austin Gosler. Some of you from various track days might have seen me lurking about and in turn quickly hidden your daughters of age and valuables. I’m the greasy unkempt guy that leaves motor oil on the jukebox buttons.

G

Don’t go backing away yet, I am gainfully employed as an artist for a video game company. With the illusion of vagrancy dispelled I can focus on my recent opportunity to compose an article for this publication. I must start off by admitting I do not own a Porsche. I have been a general sports car fan for much of my life, and Porsches have always been one of my very favorite automobile marques. Functional Teutonic skin stretched over championship winning guts is a combination fit for even his holiness the Great Lizard Pope. On top of that, Porsche has always been a true individual in the business of fun cars. These cars are often noted for such features as curious aircooled engines hanging out in space, stark, upright yet Author Grant and Friends focused interiors, and bizarre pop up headlights, resembling Kermit the Frog trying to wire his house on a budget. To this day I still see hound’s tooth overlaid upon my vision due to retinal damage incurred from a pair of Porsche seats. This is not a negative slant in any way, as I often fancy myself as possessing my own share of “unique” qualities. Considering the fact that I am afraid of the dark, cannot tell time on an analog clock, and style my sideburns after a werewolf, one might see I am in hardly the position to throw stones. So, you may ask, if I have such a fraternal connection to this car why do I not own one? Why have I shown up to the track lately in a swoopy, American monstrosity? I do have the answer for all this, in a tidy, written format that amazingly resembles an article. I was thinking that since I wanted to compose an article for this very magazine, I could actuate 2 valves with a single camshaft. At this point you might be thinking that this article is nothing more than a stream of consciousness rant. You might even want to roll this publication up and fire it at my home, tied to a ballista bolt ….on fire. But I urge you to think about what you are doing, and preserve the section containing the paid advertisements. And about those ballista bolts, you can find me at the following address: 1060 W Addison St. Chicago, IL 60613 My racing interests began long ago with my involvement in the White Trash Stoplight Derby League operating on the streets of many Texas small towns. I further proved my mettle driving in the Good Ole Boy Dirt Road Rally on gravel strewn back roads. We even had mailboxes instead of cones along the race course. In those days the 302 Fox platform Mustang was the car of choice. Stinky, square, and balanced like a blacksmith’s hammer, the only redeeming quality of this car was the lumping big V8. We could make power in this engine as easily as we could produce spit-wads in detention. The styling, braking, and handling could further be compared to an overseas 14

crate loose on a cargo ship deck in a terrific storm. But like many things in a small town that teenaged boys are drawn to, the Mustang’s looks would grow on you, especially with a bottle of Boone’s Farm. It was an acceptable machine for the circumstances. But wait a second now. I am not all beer cans and gimme hats here. It turns out my mother lives in Europe, in The Netherlands to be exact. I spent several summers escaping college life sleazing around Western Europe on trains. For those who might not understand how a pancake flat, sub sea level country known for its hash, hookers and Heineken can spark any semblance of driving passion, may I direct your attention to a location a few hundred miles to the south east. Nestled amongst the trees is - what would first appear to be a dyslexic concrete tapeworm doing its best impression of the letter “D” - The Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. This track is a public road for periods of time. Anyone with a bit of spare cash and some wheels can brave its ribbony lengths at their own risk. It’s a great track in that it is excessively long; it is filled with traffic, and feels as wide as a sidewalk at speed. It was here that I made new German acquaintances in the BMW 2002 Tii and the Porsche/VW 914. One of these cars offered upright saloon seating, complete with ample headroom with a greenhouse of glass. The 2002 was the type of car one could drive on track with zeal. Amazing, too, is that it would easily cart three of your best mates all the way to St. Jerome’s Pub in the winding brick throat of Den Haag. The other car made me feel like I was sitting on the floor with a mental lawnmower engine chasing me about. This car was a real teeth rattler. This 914 cockpit featured a slim dashboard with hardly room for a drink, and forget about leaning that seat back at all. The little 914 was track savvy enough, even with near solid rock suspension components and a curious wafting fuel odor. Yet, in every day life, this machine was game for cobblestone bouncing into the city Centrum after a bag of frites at Polleke. Thus, I would return to the States with a new respect for curves, apexes and the idea that turning cars can be as fun as making them go in a straight line. Now I needed a car that would properly entertain my new driving philosophy. Acquiring a 914 or 2002 was turning out to become a difficult task. These are great cars, but they both suffer from being a tad on the rare side. They are also the types of cars that benefit from much fiddling under the hood. The few candidates I found needed immediate attention. I began to wonder if there was something out there with stellar handling, acceptable looks, and affordable to boot? Was there a car for me that did not use a fuel delivery system similar to the one powering Ivanhoe’s horse? Enter the Mazda Mx5 Miata. Upon mention of this car, I usually prepare myself for comments containing the words “chick car” or “hair dryer.” The Miata’s halo effect is one of the only downsides to the car. Power may be a problem for some, but that is what the aftermarket is for. Soon enough I had the tiny roadster packed with go fast goodies. Supercharged induction is just one highlight in that long line of Miata products. I even bought a 1999 Sport to use as a stocker. I drove my Miata through college and for a few years after. The Miata experience was really tremendous, but being a self doubting social sheep type I could not continue trying to live down the image assigned to me by the masses. From here on out I could only do what every red blooded American with low self esteem, long work hours, and disposable income would do, I decided to exercise my right as a consumer. This time around I would seek out an entirely new level of machine. I wanted to combine and congeal some of my favorite vehicular ideals into one car. The basic idea of the BMW M3 could possibly evoke the spirit of a 2002Tii with practical power and poise, so naturally this was a great candi-


date. On the other hand, my test drives of the Boxster, Cayman and the microscopic Lotus Elise brought back memories of a 914 all grown up. The Elise especially won me over with its soundtrack of road debris enjoyed from such a low position within the already short car. If only I could somehow get a Miata and an old Mustang to snuggle up and produce some kind of unholy offspring. With the right genetic mix, I might breed a sleek handling rear driver with an enormous torque biased V8. And possibly the car would endow me with a bit of “shed-cred” to keep my hulking, good old boy relatives from beating me up. And that’s when I remembered something. I can recall a host of roaring plastic doorstops from many of my track days, zooming past me. I still can still see clearly the four red eyes disappearing down the straights. Could a Corvette really have the genitalia compensation power I have heard so much about? Does confidence and happiness come in six liter doses? I can assure you yes it does indeed. The Corvette is like a heavy dose of lap time Viagra. I have traded my ham hands and my lead foot for a Burt Reynolds mask with matching Saturn Five rocket booster underwear. I like this car so much my only planned modifications are a “Dixie Song” horn and a curious reciprocating red light that zigs horizontally between the headlamps. I suppose this car appeals to two important facets of my personality like a Frosted Mini Wheats commercial. The torque laden V8 appeals to the macho bubba in me while my sensitive art poofter side loves to toy with endless grip and balance.

Father’s Day - Rain or Shine! by Lisa Steele any people probably thought that the Father’s Day social was cancelled due to rain, rain, and more rain, but we actually had a wonderful time with approximately 35ish people. This year we met at the BEAUTIFUL home of the Bell Family. Their house is very unique with something like 12 exterior doors, lots of windows, ponds (ask Andrea and Bryan what they find in those ponds), and a very open floor plan. I could never use the right words to describe the gorgeous view of natural landscape that surrounds their home. Once everyone had the grand tour, you could not resist the aroma from the chocolate fountain Andrea set up in the kitchen…we all nibbled on chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallows, pretzels, bananas, cookies, and whatever else you wanted to experiment with.

Once the grill got fired up by Grill Master Bryan Bell, everyone got a plate and started filling it with the various side dishes brought by all…the most popular dish seem to be the Conner starts the splashing raman noodle salad made by Christy Dominick…yummy! Of course, the Bells were prepared with tables set up in the garage, so there was plenty of space to eat and stay dry. Once our tummies were full, the sun decided to make an appearance and the kids immediately jumped into the swimming pool…a little chilly but who cares when you’re a kid? A great time was had by all and it was so nice to see all of the fathers from our Porsche family. A huge Thank You to the Bell Family for opening up their fabulous home to us all!

Porsche Club of America Escape 2007 by Jill Beck, PCA National Newsletter Chair ark down October 11-14 on your calendar for this year’s PCA Escape Weekend. This year, the Potomac Region is hosting “Escape Into American History.” Enjoy four fun filled days of touring, socializing and showing off your Porsche. The headquarters is the beautiful Marriott Westfields Hotel in Chantilly, Virginia. From a Welcome Reception on Thursday to a bevy of tours to choose from on Friday and Saturday, to an Escape Dinner on Saturday and a low key car show on Sunday, you’ll take away a lifetime of memories.

We had new members, old members, and intermediate members. We even had members who ordinarily confine their happiness to the track, rather than food and beverages – like Mark Steele, for example. At first, I didn’t recognize him without his racing helmet. New attendees and members included Karen and Mike Thompson. Karen and Mike have a ranch in Kansas that has suffered from the floods, but they were in Dallas long enough to come to their first happy hour and it was great to visit with them. Mark sans helmet

For our Mike and Karen August 16 Happy Hour we’re returning to Razzoo’s in Irving. Take the MacArthur exit off 635 and get on the LBJ service road going west. Razzoo’s will be on your right, several blocks down. As you probably know, they serve large portions of Cajun and American food. Hope to see you there!

Boxstoberfest 2007 September 7, 8 and 9, 2007 Fredericksburg, Texas Boxstoberfest is an annual event, held in Fredericksburg, TX - right in the middle of the TX hill country. As always, Boxstoberfest is free (no registration fee, but you are responsible for your own meals and lodging). This year, the event is Sept 7-9. Boxstoberfest is a low key event that the main focus is the Saturday drive. Some of the best driving roads in the US will be covered. As always, we will be hitting the “twisted sisters� - 335, 336 and 337. These roads have great elevation changes, tight twisties, and straight sections with virtually no other traffic so you can really enjoy what your Boxster was built to do.

The event starts off Friday night at the Auslander restaurant, where everyone gets their goody bags and maps, meets up with old friends and makes a few new friends (and have a few beers). Saturday starts off at the Gillespie County Airport, where we all line up for a mini concourse . . .

Welcome, New Members! You have just joined one of the best and most active PCA Regions in the country! Some clubs focus solely on social events, while others focus on just show and shine concours events. Maverick Region is a club that focuses on providing our members with the tools necessary to have the ultimate in driving experiences. You will notice that our region has many Time Trials, Autocrosses, and Drivers’ Education (DE) events (in addition to a yearly Club Race). This has been the spirit of the region for quite some time. We have some of the finest instructors in the country. Make sure you take full advantage of the driving experiences we have to offer. Racing is not ALL we focus on, though. If racing doesn’t suit you, we have monthly happy hours, three monthly lunch gatherings, regular dinner socials, frequent driving tours on some fabulous roads in and around Texas, driving rallies (fun for the whole family), and regular opportunities to support our perpetual charity, the Hope Shelter.
