Savannah, here we come!
ot summer nights! I have had enough of the hot weather, but thank goodness the AC in my home, work, and present Porsche are working. The AC in my first Porsche, a 1985 Targa, was not built to keep up with Texas heat, as some of you can relate to!
By the time you read this, we will have driven to Savannah, Georgia, for the Porsche Parade. It is always a great event with some surprises that you will hear about in an upcoming issue of Slipstream. Once again, thank goodness the AC works! GREAT RESPONSE! Our emailed survey had an unbelievable response rate, which once again proves how much each of you really care for and care about your Maverick Region Porsche Club. Madhu (our club secretary) is busy tabulating the results, which will be published in the September issue of Slipstream as promised. It was extremely rewarding to get all that feedback and all those suggestions, proving once again, “If you want to know how to improve, all you have to do is ask!” By the way, on our Maverick Region website (mav.pca.org), there is a suggestion box that you can access ANYTIME. Those suggestions come directly to me, so please don’t hesitate to send one in when one comes to mind. ALSO, if you did NOT receive an email about the survey, please let me know (president@mavpca.org) so I can make sure we have your correct email in the system.
Upcoming Events: August is a light month for events, since many of us will be at Parade and not be back home until the 8th or 9th. However, we do have our monthly Happy Hour at Mac’s Grill at 5120 Highway 121, Colleyville, Texas, on Thursday, August 18th, so come on out and remember to bring your report, “What I did on my summer vacation.” September is “back to busy” with Boxstoberfest in Fredericksburg on the 9th, 10th and 11th (open to ALL cars, not just Boxsters). For information and registration go to www.boxstoberfest.com (don’t forget the “s” after the “x” in boxstoberfest). We’ve been and it’s a GREAT time! Then, we also have a Time Trial on the 10th and Autocross on the 11th, both are in Mineral Wells. PLUS, we have Driver’s Education (DE) at Motorsport 2
Ranch on the 24th-25th. These have been selling out early all year, so please get online and sign up EARLY. Speaking of Calendars, I know that Slipstream does not arrive in our mailboxes until the month is partway gone. What’s the solution to planning your month’s Porsche Club activities??? Go to our website (mav.pca.org) and click on the “Events” tab. Our yearlong calendar is there, which is what we use to list the events in Slipstream! See an event on that calendar in which you might be interested? Just click on it! The details are right there.
Mav of the Month: This month we honor one of our unsung Autocross and Time Trial volunteers, Michael Pelletier! Michael continues to serve as our AX/TT Registrar, making sure that everyone gets signed up and informed about each of those events. Michael’s work doesn’t stop there. When needed, he jumps in with both feet to make sure the rest of each event runs smoothly for our members! So, for all you do, we honor you as our Mav of the Month, and reward you with a gift card to the Silver Fox! John

C-817-917-6725 vp@mavpca.org Chris has been a Maverick for over ten years and owned a 2000 Boxster S. He recently sold it with tears in his eyes… Welcome, dream car; a 2010 Carrera Cab. Now that the tears have dried up, he’s having a blast! Here’s to sharing the fun in our events with many Mav’s throughout 2011.
John enjoys DE’s, Happy Hours, Porsche Parade and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab so that’s how it got in his blood. POSITION Milton, James

y the time everyone reads this issue, our fellow Mavs that ventured to Savannah will be back in Texas. For those of us who didn’t make it to this year’s National Parade, let’s pencil in next year’s Parade which will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the mean time, come to our August 10th board meeting and hear about some of the excitement first hand. If you attended this year, please consider submitting articles and pictures so I can share your adventures with the rest of the Maverick Region. If you haven’t noticed yet, and I’m sure I’m only talking to a select few of our membership, we have a wonderful group of people in our club that love to have fun. Come out to some air conditioned social events in the next month or so and then clear your calendar for some more driving events as our weather cools. There’s going to be a lot of fun had by many Mavericks and you might as well be one of the ones having the fun. This is a great car club, but for a lot of us, including one of our past presidents who coined our national tag line, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people,” making friendships is what it’s all about!

Maverick Minutes Madhu Rao, Secretary
H
ere we are, halfway through 2011. Our July board meeting started at 7 p.m. with a mid-year review of our financial position. John Hamilton and Jim Falgout reviewed our expenses on a seasonal and activity-level basis. John asked the committee chairs to forecast their anticipated expenses by the August 10th board meeting and identify any areas where funds could be used more efficiently. Why do this? It relates to the goals John outlined in January to create an inclusive, fun, and fiscally-healthy club. Madhu Rao, (that’s me), briefly reviewed our Maverick Region survey. The survey is just one way we appreciate your feedback. Other methods include our website suggestion box, by phone or in person at an event. Feel free to contact any of us with your suggestions. Madhu also described the timeline associated with Maverick Region 2012 officer elections. He referenced the process outlined in article nine on the Maverick Region website (http://mav.pca.org/About/bylaws.asp). A nomination committee has been established to ensure transparency in the election process. The committee will be led by Carey Spreen and include John Harvey and Brendan Eagan. If you have any questions or an interest in running for one of the elected officer positions please email: nomination@ mavpca.org with your name and contact information before September 1, 2011. The Nominations Committee will create the ballot listing the candidates running for the four elected offices. Future issues of Slipstream will contain additional information about the election and the ballot. The results will be announced at Founders’ Day on November 12, 2011. There’s another reason to attend, right?
activities. Speaking of photos (do photos speak? - discuss amongst yourselves) from a Maverick Region event or from Porsche Parade or Escape please send these to Richard at editor@mavpca.org for his review and possible inclusion into Slipstream. Our Drivers’ Education equipment manager, Luke Edson, reported that the equipment was functioning well. In the end, isn’t that really the most important thing he could have said? Christy Payne described the recent social activities in our region. There were 23 people that attended the Father’s Day outing at SpeedZone and 17 people that attended the Porsches and Ponies event at Lone Star Park. Thanks for putting these together. Lisa Steele reviewed the formation of the membership committee which includes Andrea Bell, Tom and Susan Froehlich, and Monda Hanna. She described the on boarding process for new members which includes a new name badge, welcome email, welcome letter, and phone call. How is that for a personal touch? Now, what about us existing members who are up for renewal? Well, the process is fairly similar. I’ll tell you about my experience later this year! Please contact Lisa at membership@mavpca.org with any membership questions or referrals. Linda Bambina has been a member of the Maverick Region since 1981. Yes, you read that right! She is such a valuable resource regarding our region’s history. She talked about the recent Autos in the Park event at the Cooper Clinic. This was well attended by members from the Maverick Region. She also described tagline for our 50th anniversary activities, “Maverick Region: Driving Friendships for 50 Years.” Sounds great to me. What do you think?
Travis Howard updated the board about the June AX/TT at Mineral Wells. He described the use of a chase vehicle to help ensure the event was safe and fun. He also reiterated the need for volunteers and instructors to ensure a great driving experience for all. Please contact Travis at tt@mavpca.org or Tannia Dobbins at ax@mavpca.org if you are interested.
Wendy Shoffit noted that the Maverick Region brochures have been updated and are available now. She also referenced that membership directories are available for $5 at www.clubregistration.net. She noted that approximately 40 fellow Mavericks are headed to the Porsche Parade in Savannah, Georgia. Doesn’t that sound like a fun road trip!
John Harvey described the recent Sunday driving tour. A total of 76 people (41 cars) participated. He and Brendan Eagan described the process of uploading the driving tour maps to the Maverick website BEFORE a drive. This will help create a great driving experience for all. If you would like to help out at one of the drives please contact John at tours@mavpca.org.
Speaking of road trip, Carey reviewed some ideas for a combined rally and driving tour later this fall. Given the success of the most recent one, I bet the turnout will be great. Stay tuned for more details.
Richard Bradley is the editor of Slipstream. He noted that Amanda, the Slipstream summer intern, has taken photos for the cover as well as helped out with other design 8
In conjunction with Linda’s comments above, Frank Briggs noted the success of the Autos in the Park event. He also recognized the number of gifts that Pat Friend obtained from Boardwalk Porsche. Frank also described plans for a Show and Shine event this fall. Frank noted that recent Happy Hours continue to be well attended and the new
July 6, 2011 format involving several couples hosting these events is working well. Our guest attending this meeting is Mike Picolla. He recently participated in a Drivers’ Education event and attended the June Happy Hour at Ruggeri’s. He indicated an interest to help out the Maverick Region later this year. Thanks Mike! We always welcome fellow Mavericks who would like to volunteer on behalf of our region. Please let any board member know your interests and we’ll take it from there. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

orsches and Ponies at Lone Star Park was terrific with great food, friends, and fireworks! It is definitely summer in Texas, so we were very happy to have a nice, air conditioned Luxury Suite. The view of the track and finish line was amazing! The Suite included our very own bar and bartender, so we were well attended to. We had a great balcony overlooking the track as well. When the races started, we were out there cheering for our selected horses. It was shaded, so surprisingly comfortable even in the middle of the day. Most of us are not big gamblers. I was betting $2 per race for the most part. Of course, when I won my first $.80 I was hooked again! By the end, I was playing with up to $6.00. Big spender, I know. The big winners were Trish Christensen and Alan Csanadi who had their heads together to choose the best horses. I had
LOADS of fun, but I lost $18 throughout the entire day and they won $250! Whatever they were doing worked. The buffet was incredible. Prime Rib, turkey, sausage, great salads, sides and a huge selection of desserts. We were all stuffed. I also heard from Lisa Steele that the Pecan Pie was to DIE for. To top off the evening, we enjoyed one of the best fireworks shows I have seen in a long time. Whenever we thought it was about to end, there were more. It went on forever! Of course, the finale was incredible. The view from our suite balcony was amazing, the fireworks were right in front of us. The best part of the Porsches & Ponies event, as always, was visiting with all our Porsche Club friends. What an incredible day. This event is a must to attend, especially since next year is the 50th Anniversary of the Maverick Region. A little birdie tells me we’ll be ramping it up too. I’ll be sure to keep my eye on Trish and Alan’s picks next year!
James and Wendy Shoffit support another fun social event with the PCA.

Blueberry Hill Sunday Drive By Amanda Bradley
Photos by Amanda Bradley, Brendan Eagan, & George & Dee Luxbacher
S
ummertime is always full of fresh fruits and veggies. There is corn, tomatoes, watermelon, grapes, peaches, and all kinds of berries, but in particular, blueberries. The PCA took off towards Echo Springs Blueberry Farm on June 26, 2011, for the Blueberry Hill Sunday Drive. The club met at a Walmart in Mesquite and filled the parking lot up. There were 41 cars and a herd of onlookers. Some Walmart employees were seen snapping pictures with their cell phones. I got to go on the drive with my mom, Robin Bradley, making it a fun girls’ day. There were several families that joined our group of Porsche enthusiasts on the Blueberry Hill drive. Many of the Sunday Drives are great opportunities for family outings as they have fun destinations for kids to look forward to.
Some members toured the factory and stayed at Echo Springs longer, but my mom and I headed out around six for our long drive back. She drove on the actual drive, but I drove home. As I was speeding around the curves she was grasping the passenger handle and told me I drove like my dad but with her lead foot – a bad combination. However, I think it’s a perfect combination while driving a Porsche: fast and furious. We were exhausted by the time we got home, but it was a day well spent. And the blueberries we picked made some great additions to our snacks, fruit salads, and deserts, mm mm good! A special thanks goes to Brendan and Susan Eagan for leading the second group, and to Madhu Rao for driving sweep. Since my group got lost, we missed the “bridge to nowhere,” but a big thanks goes to Houston Oronas, Jr. for routing the group around it.
The drive got off to a great start with the exception of one group, which happened to be my own, getting separated from the pack. We missed the very first exit and ended up spending a lot more time on the highway and a lot less time speeding around curves on the back roads. Luckily, we made it to the rest place at Purtis Creek State Park before everyone else, which means we were first in line for the bathroom – that’s a win in my book!

We hit the road again to head for our final destination at Echo Springs Blueberry Farm and finally made it late in the afternoon. It was hot. A lot of people turned around and left once they arrived, but we stayed and picked a bucket of blueberries along with 74 other pickers.

Who knew blueberries grew on trees? I always imagined them in bushes. For once I enjoyed being tall because I could pick the best blueberries from the tops of the trees, and boy were they juicy. After the heat got to us, the store at Echo Springs had a ton of samples to try. Jams, jellies, dips, and ice cream, my favorite. I thought they should have had blueberry ice cream, but peach was a good substitute and a nice refresher. Lisa St

my first Porsche was a surprise from my wife. she arranged for me to meet Keith Beitter, my sales consultant, and i had an excellent experience. when the lease was up, i returned to Park Place Porsche, and they again met my needs with no hassle. my current car is a 2009 Cayman s, which is an improved version of my previous 2007 Cayman, and i love it just the way it is. Park Place does much more than just sell and service cars – they help their clients truly enjoy the Porsche driving experience. we participated in our first Park Place Porsche driving event about a month ago, and it was perfect. it was a rally-style drive through twisty roads that culminated in a wonderful steak lunch. it was fantastic to share the experience with a great group of people who also appreciate Porsches. all dealers look the same from the outside, but what matters most is the people inside the dealership, and that’s what impresses me most about Park Place Porsche. They make me feel important, and they offer that same customer experience to everyone, whether they purchase new or pre-owned. They’re professional and deal with you in an open, face-to-face, comfortable relationship so that you know you matter. There’s just no comparison to Porsche or to Park Place.

Cliff’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear
I
t has been in the 100F/37C range for weeks now. I want to make some suggestions to all.
I’m gonna go old school here. I honestly have not looked into a recent owner’s manual for any Porsche model to see what the factory currently suggests to maximize cooling efficiency in hot weather.
But, I know what works and why it works. I will not go into the refrigeration system doings and heat removal from air etc. Nor bore you with the latest climate control monitoring sensors and how a micro processor responds based on driver inputs, temperature sensor data etc. The systems today, in any vehicle, including any new Porsche, are very complex. Even the sun intensity and angle of light is now a part of how the systems work in all our cars. Plus, air quality is measured with a smog sensor. Over the years, I have found myself in repair situations that dictated my going to a Porsche and measuring the inside cabin temperature after the car sat out in 100+ degree heat, with the windows shut, for hours. The highest temperature I have measured was 165F on black leather seats in a 911. I regularly see 130F + temperatures on a daily basis. Light colored materials absorb and maintain solar radiation much less than darker materials. You folks all know that. When you take an infrared monitor out and measure interior temperatures, the reality really strikes home, especially if you measure the temperature of the metal top of a black car and then a white car. If you have to park in direct sunlight for hours before returning, put a sunshade inside the windshield. Get one that reflects ultraviolet light. When you get in, start the engine, roll down all the windows. Turn the AC on and set the fan to it’s lowest setting. Wait about one minute and preferably be moving as soon as possible. Having the engine off idle and air moving over the front condenser is extremely helpful to the refrigeration system. 1500 RPM or more will allow the refrigeration system to get on point efficiently. The car moving will maximize air movement over the condenser and get refrigerant moving 14
Jeeezzee It’s Hot Outside Lately heat from the cabin much quicker. The lowest fan speed will allow the AC evaporator to reach its maximum efficient cooling ability quicker. Have the system set on outside air and let it start out cooling air drawn in from the outside. After about one minute of suffering in the heat (which in my experience yer gonna do for a longer period if you do not follow my suggestion), switch the system to recirculated air. Next, ramp up the fan speed after rolling up the windows. The air coming through those vents needs to be recirculated air and not outside air. Continuously recirculating that cooler air maximizes efficiency and is worth about five to eight degrees of cooler outlet vent temperatures. I have measured it in many test situations over the years. 944’s especially suffer if their recirculation system is not working correctly. On average, it takes four to seven minutes to feel some relief from the heat in any vehicle in 100F temperatures when the cabin temp is 120F+. I have measured the cabin temperatures, monitored the outlet temperatures and refrigerant pressures, while noting the time, speed, driver settings etc. Recently, I have made multiple excel sheets noting this information and forwarded it to Porsche engineering to help them further their quest to make their climate control systems more efficient. The systems in today’s P-cars are as good as any other manufacturer in my opinion. Car color and interior color is a huge factor. I’m Just Sayin’! And I’m thankful to be working in an air-conditioned shop. I worked in multiple, no AC P-car dealers for 29 years. What a beating…….. Sounds crazy, but I would not trade the experience for anything. Driving the Italian Way By James Shoffit
W
endy, Jasmine, and I had the good fortune this June to spend 16 days in Europe. For the first six days we were in Amsterdam, where I attended a trade show for my software company. Then, we took a high-speed train to Stuttgart for a brief visit to the Porsche Museum. We originally planned to fly from Amsterdam to Venice, but I couldn’t bear flying right over Stuttgart and not visiting the Museum. It was wonderful, and you definitely need to visit any time you get an opportunity. Denny and Christy Payne were there just two weeks after we were, and many displays and cars had already changed out! If you have been to Parade for a number of years (I have been to ten now), you will have already seen quite a few of the cars there. This made me appreciate my Parade experiences as much as it made me appreciate the Museum! In Stuttgart, we rented a car (a Ford Focus), and headed South on the Autobahn. Driving in Germany was a dream come true. There were no speed limits for much of the Autobahn. People are respectful and attentive on the road. Turn signals and lanes were both used appropriately. When stopped at a red light, the light turns to yellow briefly to give you time to get your car in gear and rev the engine so when the light DOES turn green, everyone is ready to go. When you are in the right lane - the slow lane - and are approaching a slower vehicle, the cars in the left lane - the fast lane - make room for you to move left to get around the obstacle, even if it momentarily impedes their progress. They understand
16
Photos by Wendy Shoffit
you will be back in the right lane and out of their way soon enough. But that isn’t the point of this story. Driving in Italy is. After traversing Switzerland, we spent the next 5 days driving from Milan, over to Venice, then across the whole country to Pisa, back to the center to Florence. Then we headed south to Naples, and Pompeii, followed by a drive up the Amalfi Coast, and then finally to Rome. Most people think the Italians are horrible drivers. I would like to disagree. Most people think Italians are rude drivers, but again, I would disagree. The rules are just different there - VERY different from what we are used to in the USA. If you think of driving in Italy as an equivalent to driving a road race on a race track, it makes much more sense.
The Italians ignore the white lines separating lanes: True! But if you were on a race track and some moron painted white lines down the middle, would you adhere to them? Of course not! So why do Italian roads even HAVE lines? To keep the line-painters employed, of course! The Italians rarely use turn signals: True! How many times, when driving on a race track, have you seen a driver use their turn signal? Never. Why? Because everyone on the track is paying attention to what everyone else is doing, and you usually KNOW where a car is going to go based on its relative speed and position. It is rarely a surprise if you are paying attention. The Italians know this and abide by this. If they ARE doing something unusual - like trying to merge into a too-small space at a decent rate of speed, they DO signal. And whenever I signaled in those instances, I was given room to merge and let in quite peaceably. The Italians cut each other off at every opportunity: True! But on a racetrack, if another driver is moving faster and positions himself in front of another driver, is that considered rude? Of course not. And if an Italian is in the left lane and a faster car comes up from behind, the driver nearly always moves over with no drama whatsoever. Good luck getting that respect in the USA.
The difference when driving in Italy is that everyone is paying attention all the time. There may be honking when someone up front isn’t paying ENOUGH attention, but they do seem to know where cars are relative to others, and though the streets are narrow and the speeds nearly always excessive, I only saw one wreck the whole week I drove there. Oddly enough I didn’t see a single Ferrari - most of them would be considered too large to be practical and too expensive to repair if someone DID run into you. I did see a handful of Porsches, mostly on the highways and not in the cities. The AVERAGE size of a car in Italy is a Smart Car - about half the cars are smaller (some are WAY smaller) and about half are larger. The smaller the car you have, the happier you will be in the traffic. If you do rent a car, make sure you get something that can top out at 130kph (80mph) or more so you can keep up on the Autostrada, but the smaller car always wins when the traffic gets tight. So if you are considering renting a car and driving in Italy, think of it as a race, and drive with that in mind, and things will work out much better. And if you are slow, they will just go around you - not to be rude, but just because you were slow. :)

Rennsport Reunion IV Update Stellar lineup of drivers and cars for Porsche’s celebration of its motorsport heritage
F
or the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV taking Octoplace at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway in Octo ber, it’s both the men and machines that are expected to draw one of the largest crowds in track history. And, if early sign-ups are any indication, both elements will not disappoint. Just a glance at the guest list reveals names that are well entrenched in Porsche Motorsport history. For example, Vic Elford, who won the Monte Carlo Rally and scored Porsche’s first overall win at the 24 Hours of Daytona – on back-to-back weekends; James Weaver, Porsche 962 driver for Dyson Racing and a Daytona and Sebring winner; Gijs van Lennep, Dutch Porsche 917 and 911 driver who won Le Mans with Helmut Marko and the last Targa Florio with Herbert Müller; Chip Robinson, IMSA champion with Al Holbert in a Porsche 962; George Follmer, who took the turbocharged 917 to Can-Am championship; Dan Gurney, who scored Porsche’s first successes in Formula 1; and Hurley Haywood, the most successful Porsche endurance driver with wins at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans. More than 50 drivers of similar stature have already said “yes” to Porsche’s invitation for the October 14-16, 2011, Rennsport event. The rest of the names will be announced as the event gets closer. And it’s not just drivers that made their Porsche race cars famous. Attendees will include Norbert Singer, recently-retired Porsche Motorsport engineer, known as the father of the Porsche 962; Hans Mezger, who headed up the Porsche Motorsport racing engine function from his Dan Gurney F1 motors through the 917, 935, 962 and McLaren F1 engine; and Alwin Springer, former Vasek Polak 917 crew member who later built engines at his company Andial and served as president of Porsche Motorsports North America. Jörg Bergmeister, Patrick Long, and the rest of the current Porsche factory drivers, will all attend Rennsport. The Porsche Club of America is honored to assist the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV with several
activities: History of the Porsche 911 Display, Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals with Parade laps of the track, PCA Hospitality and Membership Center, two race groups: Rennsport Reunion Cup for Porsche Cup Cars and PCA Club Racing for PCA race cars, and PCA Volunteer Pool—workers to assist with the club’s involvement. Enhancing the Rennsport Reunion Cup race, Michelin Tire Company comes on board as the spec tire manufacturer for that exciting contest. We are looking for exceptional examples of Porsche 911 production models for the History of the Porsche 911 Display at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the event. It will be a display representing the 911 model throughout its generational life. Please contact Tom Provasi for information and registration at tprovasi@netgate.net or 408/947-0980. PCA members will be invited to use a terrific PCA Hospitality and Membership Center that will be open for all days of the event, October 14-16, to park safely in one of the Porsche Model-Specific Parking Corrals (a corral parking ticket will be required— please visit www.mazdaraceway.com for ticket information), and to enjoy Parade laps of the track with their Porsches. We will need PCA volunteer workers to assist with our activities at the Rennsport Reunion IV. If you are interested in supporting this memorable event, please contact Sharon Neidel with the PCA Volunteer Pool at sharonneidel@yahoo.com or 650/508-1308. We will have a very special event memento for the volunteer workers. Additional details of the Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV are published on the following Porsche web site: www.porsche.com/usa/rennsport-reunion-iv/. he Three Questions Porsche Owners Should Ask To Help Them Find A Service Facility!
one of very early (47th) Bosch Authorized Service Centers in the United States.
Whether you come right out and ask it point blank or by a number of cleverly poised questions, one of the first things, you, as a Porsche owner/driver want to know when looking for a shop to service it, is, “Tell me what I need to know to do business with you?” Well, let me start with a quick history.
“What do I need to know to feel confident about deciding to place my trust in Autoscope?” Since 1982, Autoscope has been servicing Porsche vehicles and providing you with the support and valueadded care that you have been looking for and expecting from your Porsche service provider. Additionally, Autoscope has been able to provide you and your family with a “One-StopShop” standard for all your family of cars along with the BEST warranties and nationwide protection you can find anywhere. Autoscope will do it all, under one roof, with certified, Bosch factory trained technicians and keep track of it all for you and your family.
In 1955, Ohannes Mavelian started a small, independent repair facility specializing in VW in the heart of Lebanon. Within a couple of years, the shop achieved the Highest-Status of the ONLY VW-Factory Authorized Independent Repair Facility in the entire nation. An award not achieved before, nor since in Lebanon. How did he do it? By offering a fair, speedy and value-driven service, by making sure his clients were treated like friends, and always, with integrity. Determined to provide greater opportunities for his family, he migrated to United States and later to Dallas. Autoscope has been operating as a family business with those same ideals since 1982, and because of the expertise in European automotive and fuel injection repair, Autoscope was granted
“How will I know if I’m right for you and you’re right for me?” My suggestion is, try Autoscope, even if it’s for a minor service and you too will join our thousands of satisfied, special clients.

Member Spotlight: Anne Scheuerle Andrea Bell, Public Relations Chair his month’s new member spotlight is on Anne Scheuerle. Anne bought a 2003 Carrera Cabriolet about a month ago. She said it has a few miles on it but it is in fantastic shape. She is really looking forward to participating in DE events and learning how to drive it the way it was meant to be driven (on the track, anyway)!
T
of them for themselves!” Anne said her family is quite small. Her parents are living in NH and she does not have any brothers or sisters. Since her dad didn’t have any sons, she seems to have inherited his love for cars. When he came down to visit they were able to participate in the Porsche Road Show at TMS. “We had a blast and it was great to be able to attend with my Dad,” she said.
This is her first Porsche, but she feels like the brand has always been part of the family. Her dad has been the owner of “Zoom,” a 1965 356C since she was about two. She said she has memories of fitting in the back seat of it! Some day he plans to pass it on to Anne, but she is in no hurry for that! She said she’s grown up reading his Panorama and Der Vorganger (Potomac Region) magazines.
Anne has been in Dallas for about a year and a half. She was working in Boston but her company transferred her here. She said she is enjoying the change of climate and the friendly folks.
“It was such a great feeling when he came to visit,” she shared. “I was able to surprise him with my new purchase and give him the keys. Riding with him was almost as much fun as driving it myself!”
She is looking forward to meeting new friends and fellow Mavericks. Anne also enjoys traveling and skiing and scuba diving when she gets the chance.
“I love my Porsche,” Anne added, “But I’m also a complete fan of the new diesels - too bad the Europeans get to keep most
“I know the summers can be a bit on the warm side,” she said, “But it’s a welcome change after spending the winter shoveling the driveway!”
Please look for Anne at a future PCA event and extend a warm welcome into our Maverick family. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT” feature, please contact me at pr@mavpca.org.

Happy Hour - Uncle Buck’s By Chris Christensen

W
e had an excellent turn-out for this month’s Happy Hour. Over 40 Mavs and even a grand baby made the event, being one of our better attended summer Happy Hours. It is nice to see our fellow Mavs take their children and friends out to dinner to socialize about everything Porsche and to discuss other interests. That is what it is all about, a casual relaxing evening with friends and maybe the chance to meet someone new. On the subject of new faces, it was good to know there is continued interest by our new members to visit Happy Hour to see what it is all about. New to the club included; Ann Scheuerle who owns a 2002 911 Carrera. Smile if you see her on an American Eagle flight…she will be sitting up front as your pilot. Frank and Lois Olson who own a 2003 Boxster. Also new to the club are Eric and Pat Wiscneauckis, they own a very new 2011 Carrera 4S. Not done yet – welcome Danny and Renee Thompson who own a Cayenne Turbo. So, welcome to all and hope to see you at future Happy Hours, or at the many events that our club sponsors.
Mavericks (Ann Scheurle & Mark Hanna, Ann Christensen & Renee Thompson, Amanda Bradley & Josh Peters, and Ethan & Richard Bradley) enjoy a great Happy Hour at Uncle Buck’s.
24
Uncle Bucks is a venue that provides an array of affordable meals. A huge establishment that includes a varied selection of beer from their micro-brewery, and national brands which, makes it a fun eatery to visit. The wait staff is friendly and tries hard to please. The décor gives the impression of a hunting lodge, with varied trophy deer and others catches on the walls. There should be a fair number of stories to be heard at next month’s Happy Hour from those who are attending Parade. Safe travels to all and we look forward to hearing all about your experiences. Next month’s Happy Hour will be held at Mac’s American Grill, 5120 Highway 121, Colleyville, TX 76034 on 18 August 2011. As always all are welcome…and thanks again to all those “new members” that attended this month’s Happy Hour, we hope you enjoyed yourselves and look forward to seeing you all again at a future Happy Hour. See you all next month.

On Helmets and Time By Bob Benson
M
any PCA driving events are spirited and require participants to wear approved helmets. With each lustrum the definition of “approved” changes. This recently happened – Snell 2000 helmets are no longer accepted under PCA national rules and must be replaced. Maverick Region coordinated with PCA Club Racing and our surrounding regions to set this past June 1, 2011 as the effective date. PCA generally places 2 requirements on a helmet. First, it must be certified under any of several dated Snell Memorial Foundation specifications, which are updated each lustrum. Helmets must qualify under either the currently available specification (which today is 2010) or the previous (2005). Second, the helmet must meet a Snell specification for certain specific uses. For example, we can’t use helmets certified for bicycles or harness racing. Carrying over into the 2010 specifications, we may use helmets meeting the Snell M (motorcycle) and SA (special applications, aka racing) specs. Now going forward, we may use helmets meeting the Snell K (karting) and SAH (an addendum to SA covering the addition of frontal head restraint systems). Of note, the SA and K specifications are established in the same Snell document, the only difference being K helmets do not need to pass the flame tests that SA helmets do. Club racers know they are only allowed the Snell SA or SAH specifications, not M or K. They are also allowed to have helmets meeting FIA 8860-2004, SFI 31.1 or BS665885 type A/FR standards, all within 10 years of manufacture. Given this, we also allow these non-Snell helmets in our DE, AX, and TT events. The actual cutover date when older helmets (such as year 2000) are no longer accepted is not specified by rule but rather coordinated based on that term “available”. The Snell certification process targets having helmets generally available by about October of the year an updated specification is issued, but its not unusual for general availability to slip. Changes in the testing process in 2010, combined with delays in agreement between Snell and the FIA on the SAH specification to push availability of many

Safety Chair, Maverick Region, PCA
helmets into early 2011. As a result, many organizations, including us, set June 1, 2011, as the expiration date on the older helmets. What’s gone? Helmets meeting Snell 2000 M or SA specs are no longer accepted. Note some organizations still permit helmets meeting the Snell “minus 2” specs. What to look for now? There may still be a few Snell 2005 M or SA helmets available in the retail chain, probably at a pretty good discount. Otherwise you’re looking for a Snell 2010 meeting M, K, SA, or SAH specs (or an FIA 8860 like you see on your favorite F1 driver, which I’ve recently priced at $3600 plus painting). You can verify a helmet by looking at its Snell foil sticker inside the shell, usually under the lining. Stickers for SA and SAH are a reddish orange, K is turquoise, and M is brown. Where to find a helmet? Snell M’s are available at most motorcycle dealers (motorcycle helmets that are just DOT certified are not allowed in PCA). If you want an SA those motorcycle dealers may be a good place to try on helmets – if a helmet manufacturer builds a model in both an M and SA version the dealer can get you the SA version of the M you tried on. I presume you can find Snell K’s at karting shops, though I haven’t chased this down. For SA and SAH, I only know of 4 shops in the Fort Worth / Dallas area that have helmets in stock, and their selection is usually small. They are Performance Speed Tech (at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson), Vick Racing Outfitters (southeast Fort Worth off 820), Motor Sport Sales (behind TI at 75 and 635 in Dallas), and Smiley’s Racing Products (in Mesquite). Note the Snell Foundation sets safety standards. They do not manufacture helmets. You’ll find many brands of helmets. Just make sure the one you buy has an appropriate Snell sticker.

Commentary From the Left Seat By Rob L. Turner, author of The Driver, a Marc Lange novel
I
n early July, I got an invitation to attend the Rolex Grand Am race at Laguna Seca as a guest of Kevin Buckler’s, The Racer’s Group (TRG). My company is looking into some kind of partnership with TRG and it gave us a taste of what the team was all about. Two people from our corporate office in Sunnyvale, CA, drove down to Seaside to meet me and we piled into my rental for the short drive to the track. One of the key people from our marketing group attended, and upon meeting me at my hotel, informed me she was not a car person. Judging from her old Toyota Camry, she meant it. Old, faded, with many dingers and a very trashed out interior, it was a beater, but hey it has 170K miles on it and is still going. The other person is from our corporate office in Japan and as soon as he arrived in the US, he bought a silver 2004 911 GT3, he is my kind of guy - a total Porsche enthusiast. He plans to take it back to Japan with him, I only hope he will find a place to drive it. I spent a lot of the weekends trying to convince him to join the PCA and do some DE or track events. He would smile at me and say, no, no, no, he was afraid to take the car on the track for fear of damaging it. I have invited him to
28
At Laguna Seca with TRG
come to Texas and stay at my house during a track weekend so we can get some him some seat time. I will persist!! That car should be turning laps at Laguna Seca, not sitting in has garage on weekends!
I brought ear protection for the three of us, and for the most part we needed it. Those Grand Am DP cars are pretty loud. TRG’s Porsches struggled with grip during the practice and qualifying, both cars tending to push in the corners. Not something you want to do at Laguna Seca. They qualified well back in the field, but that was not what the weekend was about. Kevin had brought a car that had not turned a wheel in a race for about two years, so it was not dialed in at all. No, the race weekend was about the kids. Kids suffering from Neurofibromatosis (NF). What is NF? Neurofibromatosis encompasses a set of distinct genetic disorders that cause tumors to grow along various types of nerves and, in addition, can affect the development of nonnervous tissues such as bones and skin. Neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow anywhere on or in the body. These kids have it tough and there is very little money and visibility being raised for NF research. Kevin and the team are doing something about it.
NF awareness. It is called Racing4Research and they partnered with TRG and other companies in the automotive industry to raise money and visibility (including the St. Louis Chapter of the PCA) to battle NF. Kevin has not driven a racecar in more than two years. Running TRG and Adobe Road winery has taken up most of his time. But for this weekend, he came out of retirement and had the Porsche he was driving wrapped in the CTF logo and colors and had many of the kids suffering from NF actually sign the car. And many of these kids and their families attended the race. It was fun to see them walk up and point to their names with big smiles on their faces, a happy moment in their complicated painful lives.
There is an organization called Children’s Tumor Foundation and they have found a unique way to promote
