What does it mean to be a lead Porsche service department? In our service department, we have always strived to be the best. In 2005, Porsche came to us and asked us to start sending in reports to a group of engineers and tasked us with looking for any area of vehicle development that could be improved. We are currently 1 of 18 dealers in North America that they have chosen to ask for this help. It is an honor we simply accepted. Since that time we have strived to always report accurately and have received great feedback from engineering. Our feedback to Porsche has given us an opportunity to be at the doorstep of their leading edge technology. We were chosen by Porsche to take on the task of spending our time examining our repairs then forwarding exactly what we saw, how we diagnosed it and how we resolved it. It is an honor to be recognized by one of the foremost automotive engineering companies on the planet in this way. When you bring your Porsche in to us it will be examined in a very special way. It is what we were doing before Porsche asked us for our help in improving their cars. Now we simply record and pass on what we do.

Proven performance in the workshop or at the track. It is our passion.

SLC Parade Report

By John Hamilton, President

R

eporting from the 57th annual Porsche Parade here in Salt Lake City, Utah! We’re having a terrific time with driving tours, rallies and autocross, plus a wonderful Concours d’Elegance to start things off on Monday. Mavericks (numbering 38 or 40) trekked out in caravans of 4, 3, 2 or 1 cars, and pulled in for a week of fun, friendship and camaraderie. Our own 2 1/2 day drive was highlighted by an overnight in a true “motor lodge” on Rt. 66, where each room had its own attached garage! So the tours and banquets have been fun, but the highlight (so far) of the week has been this publication (yes, OUR SLIPSTREAM MAGAZINE), winning the TOP NEWS-

2

LETTER AWARD in the nation for the first time ever! Congratulations to our editor for 2011, Richard Bradley, and to all the contributors and editors who have helped make this happen.

Mav of the Month Fittingly, our Mav of the Month is awarded to Fran and Carl Ussery (of Ussery Printing) who have been Maverick members for over 30 years AND ALSO OUR PUBLISHERS FOR OVER 30 YEARS! An awardwinning publication achieves that status by the combined efforts of many. The Usserys have been

faithful members of our region, participating in many events (yes: they’re here at Parade), and making sure we always have a topquality newsletter. So for all you do, congratulations Fran and Carl! Enjoy your gift certificate to the Silver Fox restaurant as a small token of our appreciation.

A

s I write this during the first week of July, there are over 40 Mavericks either preparing to head to (or already on their way to) Salt Lake City for the 57th Porsche Parade. This will be my 16th Parade, and it will be Geneva’s (my 15-year-old daughter) eighth Parade (ninth if you count the 1996 Parade, which she attended in utero about one month before she was born), but those numbers pale in comparison to the number of Parades that some Maverick “old timers” (and I use that term lovingly, because I’m one too) can brag about. There have already been plenty of articles in these pages describ-

ing what the Parade is, so I won’t rehash that here. But I would like to reiterate that if you have not been to one, you owe it to yourself to try it once. Watch the September issue of Slipstream for local flavor from PCA’s favorite event. And because of the fact that so many of us are gone in July, there are not many events to report on in the August issue, so I was afraid that I would be scrambling for material with which to fill this issue. As you will see, my fears were unfounded - in fact I have at least one article that I was not able to fit in this month, and its author graciously agreed to allow it to be pushed back to the September issue. Meanwhile, in this issue are articles covering just about all of the activities that we do over the

course of the year - Drivers’ Ed, Time Trial, Autocross, Concours d’Elegance, and Touring (Sunday Drives). And to round out the calendar, there will be a Club Race and a Rally before the year is over. And that’s just the driving and competitive events - we of course offer social events, such as the monthly Lunches and Happy Hours that have introduced several folks just this year to the people who are knowledgeable about the variety of events that we host. If you would like to become more active, showing up at a social event like a Happy Hour is a great place to start. So pick an event to attend and see what it’s all about. You are guaranteed to meet people who are passionate about what we do. Read on!

nother Maverick tradition was renewed this year with the reprise of the Father’s Day Picnic at the home of Dave and Doris Casey in Copper Canyon. The Caseys hosted this Maverick family event every year for more than a decade, typically including a People’s Choice Concours d’Elegance. And in the spirit of unique traditions, this year’s Concours was a Costume Concours, in which participants dress up their cars, and often themselves, to compete for fabulous prizes. This year’s panel of esteemed judges consisted of Ed Mayo and Alan Bambina, and first prize this year was a guest appearance on the cover of Slipstream. Yes, THAT’s why this month’s issue looked so strange when you took it out of the mailbox!

Angelina, Steve, and Jonathan Perrin took second place with “Cheetah Bait”

As usual, the club supplied the grillin’ meat and the beverages, while the participants brought side dishes, snacks and desserts to share, and the Caseys supplied the yard, the deck, the pool, the kitchen, and the good times! And of course the day was topped off by the obligatory Water Balloon Toss, handily won this year by Erin Ussery and Elika Cokely. So many thanks to Dave, Doris, Matthew, and Patrick Casey for squeezing in a very special Maverick 50th Anniversary Father’s Day Picnic between three other parties and a wedding anniversary trip!

ne of the most remarkable events that is part of the Porsche Club of America is the annual Porsche Parade. The first Parade was held in 1956 for just a few days in Gaithersburg, Maryland for 64 participants. This year’s 57th Gathering of the Porschephiles will bring several thousand enthusiasts together for a week of many things car and many more things people. I learned these details (and scores more) in the “About Us” tab on the national website. History is ma’thang! Speaking of history, check out the list below of how many Mavericks have made The List (engraved on national traveling trophies, that is). Since our Slipstream deadline is smack dab in the middle of the Salt Lake City Parade, this list only goes through last year’s 2011 Parade at Savannah. There is NO DOUBT in my mind that we Mavs have more National Winners to add to this prestigious list. And just for the record, your Maverick Region (one of 139 regions) has hosted the Parade 2 ½ times. That “half” part is because we contributed 5 chair-people and workers galore to the ’97 San Antonio Parade which was really organized by the Corpus Christi-based Coastal Bend Region! Talk about DRIVING Friendships! Yep, it was a 5 hour monthly drive (for over a year) for a carload of us to attend meetings and help pull that Parade together. How many names do you recognize?

y typical Sunday Drive would be at either Motorsport Ranch or Eagles Canyon, as Day 2 of one of the spectacular Maverick Driver Education events. I decided to try a different type of Sunday drive, Maverick Style. I joined John Harvey and his group for the June edition of the Sunday Drive to Echo Springs Blueberry Farm.

by a very enthusiastic ranger past the front gate, and then took up nearly the entire parking lot by the rest stop area Sugar and her owner near the lake. The shade of the tall trees was a nice relief as we stretched and visited.

We had a great crowd for a 100+ degree day of 30 Porsches with 30 drivers and 24 passengers, and one Shih Tzu named Sugar. We started off from Walmart in Mesquite, taking a twisty turny path plus a bit of freeway to Purtis Creek State Park. We drove in and were greeted

The ranger who greeted us was Jamie Tackel, also the park’s assistant office manager. She was joined by Lisa Male, one of the park police on duty. They told us about the park, and the animal and plant life that enjoyed this nice little tucked-away habitat. Jamie

continued from previous page Springs Blueberry Farm. Once we arrived, we took up their entire front lawn - what a sight. Several members enjoyed plucking their own berries from the bushes in the field, while others visited in the store and took the easy way out and purchased pounds of pre-picked blueberries and various other goodies such as pie, jam, muffins

and scones. The trip home for some was a direct route back to the Dallas area, while others stopped in nearby towns to visit friends – since they were “in the neighborhood.” So in comparison, the Sunday Drive (SD) event and a Sunday Driver Education (DE) day at the track have many similarities, and a few differences. Both have a driver’s meeting held the event chair. For the Sunday Drive, the cars park on the grid before the driver’s meeting, while at the track we arrive on grid after the drivers meeting.

At a DE, we are shown the blue flag with the yellow stripe when there is a faster car coming up on traffic, and then only passing under signal in the passing zone. On the SD, we still have passing zones,

Autos in the Park: The Cooper Aerobics Center Car Show By Renee Farinella

W

hether the topic of conversation for the day was Greg Brendel talking about acquiring his 1965 Ferrari 275 from a former Microsoft co-founder, or attendees walking the grounds looking for the one-ofa-kind-in-Texas circa-1965 Porsche 356 because they wanted to hear the story associated with how and why the owner got that car, the 2012 Autos In The Park Car Show held Sunday, June 3 at the Cooper Aerobics Center on Preston Road in Dallas provided a spectacular and relaxing venue unique to concours. Amidst the tree-shaded cover and cool breezes, this event was Jack Griffin’s 7th year hosting one

of his favorite creations, born from his passion to facilitate opportunities for like-minded folks to meet and get acquainted through our interest in what many would refer to as some of the best-designed cars in the world. He volunteers as the PCA Maverick board’s Concours co-chair, along with Frank Briggs.

Attendees enjoyed preparing their cars for presentation, and being a part of one of luxury motorsports premier Texas events to learn and share their unique stories of why they chose their particular models, the challenges and benefits of ownership, and improvement and maintenance tips with one another. “The word is spread through my relationships with car collectors, enthusiasts, aficionados, and automotive-related companies for vendor/sponsorships,” Jack says.

The Scottish Rite hospital, for whom we are grateful, is the primary sponsor. Jack’s friends at the health and wellness Cooper Aerobics Center sought to increase awareness of their work and facilities, so Jack had the synergistic idea to cross-pollinate and bring together the two entities; both have benefitted mutually as a result. Jack is a self-professed “people-person” and owns several vintage Porsches; Jerry Seinfeld has

Jay Bell’s ‘85 Carrera Cabriolet, originally owned by Roy Orbison

visited Jack’s home to see his cars. Part of the fun of this show is the variety of clubs and models participating: the Italian group with Ferrari, Maserati, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo; the UK with Jaguar, Aston Martin, Bentley, and Rolls Royce; the US with vintage/classic Corvette, Ford, and Chevy; and of course the German Porsche and Mercedez Benz. Over 300 owners participated; fertile ground for great catch-up conversation, as well as building new friendships. Park Place Porsche continues to be a long-time presence and supporter of the PCA Mavericks, as Jim Sherman with that dealership’s sales department professes: “Spending the day with car people for a good cause is tough to call work.” A great example of a recent conversation Jack had

resulted in PCA member Jay Bell visiting Jack’s garage, with Jay then becoming the proud new owner of Roy Orbison’s 1985 911 Cabriolet. Here is part of that story in Jay’s words: “Pretty woman, walking down the street…Mercy!” Roy Orbison was a huge car enthusiast, and in 1985 he ordered a custom black 911 Carrera Cabriolet wide-body with Cancan red leather interior from Porsche Germany. Twenty seven years later I am now the lucky owner of this very special car. I too am a car enthusiast, and as a young child growing up in Montreal, Canada I fell in love with Porsches. My first exposure to the brand was through my best friend’s father who drove many 911s. After my first ride in his 1976 911S, I knew one day I would own a Porsche of my own. That dream came true when I bought a 2001 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. Although I enjoyed that Porsche, I knew it wasn’t

Big Brothers Big Sisters Visit the June Maverick DE By Lori Mauthe, DE Chair

T

he June Driver Education event presented by Maverick Region marked several FIRSTs. And something tells me, they won’t be the last. FIRST, thanks to our DE Committee for their support of our event. We had a few regulars supporting a National Club Race event at Watkins Glen, so others stepped up to fill the gaps. Phil Hallenback took Joel’s station at Black Flag. Teamed up with Bob Benson, our event was safe and for the most part ran on schedule – well, once the medical team arrived 30 minutes late! John Hamilton and I handled registration. Lisa Steele, in addition to morning donuts and organizing lunch, also managed getting our equipment to and from the event. Thanks as well to Park Place Porsche for their continued support of our event and our members. Their tent in the student paddock and flags on grid added great color to our venue. For the FIRST time, our DE event was one day only, on Saturday.

The Bigs and Littles on the Eagles Canyon Victory Stand Former DE Chair Mike Brodigan decided to try this format, and from all feedback thus far during and a few days post event, this is a great idea! Why, you may ask? Well, we don’t always have first pick of the track dates for our events. Since our third spring series event was the first weekend in June, already into the Texas summer heat, and just to try something different, we tried a Saturday-only event.

ers Big Sisters. This organization is the nation’s largest volunteersupported mentoring network. They make meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers and children ages 6 through 18. They develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

The schedule was compressed, for the FIRST time combining two advanced groups, Yellow and White, and with a scheduled end time of 4:10pm for the day. For the FIRST time, each run group had 5 scheduled sessions.

A match consists of a male or female adult, known as a “Big,” with a male or female child, known as a “Little.” Heather Morrow is one of the Dallas area Match Support Specialists, and through a series of contacts and emails, the Bigs and Littles connected in early May. Stepping through the procedure for approval in record time, Heather was able to confirm 8 matches to join us on Saturday for the Parade Laps. After arriving at Eagles Canyon Raceway, they watched the run groups from the balcony at the club house, and were treated to a special visit to the victory stand.

As much as I enjoy the friendships that grow through active PCA club membership, sharing stories and keeping up with all there is to learn technically about my Boxster, plus the art and romance that owner experience precipitates regarding all that is superior with this caliber of vehicles (and until I learn to fly helicopters), such as an increasingly refined interior and body sculpturing for the 2013 Boxster, or more power for the new 911 Spyder, I appreciate how Frank Briggs sums up his thoughts on Autos In The Park: “I enjoy showing my car because I get the opportunity to be involved with like-minded folks that have an appreciation for the same rolling pieces of art that I do. “There is an instant friendship developed when one admires another’s automobile for the

Advertiser of the Month: Silver Fox By Linda Bambina, PR Chair

I

n early 2009, new Region President Mike Brodigan had an idea to spotlight especially hard-working volunteers in Maverick Region who might not otherwise be noticed. While recognizing them in his monthly Slipstream article might have been enough, Mike wanted a “Wow” factor. Well, he found that factor when he met Alexis Campbell, Proprietor of the Silver Fox Steakhouse in Grapevine. The Silver Fox has other locations in Ft. Worth, Frisco, and Richardson (where her husband Jason is GM!), but Grapevine is closest to Mike’s home. In Mike’s words, “Alexis just GOT what I was trying to do.” She was immediately on-board with the plan to reward a Maverick every month with a generous Gift Card to the Silver Fox of their choice. And speaking of choices,

g Events Day Picnic Picnic Day Drive hool hool 22

you can get Bar Bites that range from “Kobe Beef Sliders, Certified Corn Dogs to Ahi Tuna” as well as USDA PRIME beef and a wide variety of Ocean Favorites from this uniquely casual/upscale restaurant. Alexis has had two children since Mike first introduced himself to her just 3-½ years ago, and she is one fast-jugglin’ mom! The Grapevine Silver Fox has hosted a few Happy Hours in the past, and currently has a special promotion because of the construction going on in the area. Alexis says on their website: “Get here and let me buy you a Martini!” She promises a memorable evening if you make the extra effort to get there! The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday 4pm to 10pm, and Friday and Saturday 4pm to 11pm; they are closed on Sunday. Alexis was on the cover of Slipstream a couple of years ago, and that cover is framed and proudly displayed on the wall in the ample bar area up front.

I know everyone is aware that Slipstream has some wonderful advertisers who support our Region. And I know that most of you realize that there is an Advertiser Index on the last page of this and every newsletter. But I suspect most have not read the new banner info found there: “Tell them you saw their ad in Slipstream!” Thank you, Alexis and Jason Campbell, for your unique involvement with our busy region. We appreciate you.

On the SD, there are speed limit signs suggesting the optimal safe speeds, so the drivers are to pay attention to the speedometer while on the event.. For the DE, the speedometer is only important in the paddock area. On the SD route, we had to stay in the right hand lane, regardless of how much fun the left turn would have been to “hit the apex,” yet to do that we would have had to cross over into the left lane into oncoming traffic, and that wouldn’t be a We good ending. And

that would be another difference – one way versus two way traffic! The “line” means staying in a lane. For the DE, the “line” means making sure to optimize the full track width driving the turn in, apex and track

Time Trial 3 / Autocross 3: Return to the Fray By Denny Payne

C

hristy and I had been absent from the roster at the Autocrosses and Time Trials for too long. Many things conspired to keep us away, but we finally got all the pieces in place to make it to the June AX/TT weekend in Mineral Wells. The biggest piece was swapping out the transmission in the 944 - we had been running a locked differential which worked for Time Trials but made Autocross particularly difficult, since the car really didn't want to turn much at all. Using our Memorial Day as more of a Labor Day, and thanks to the help of Mark Steele, Marty Lumpkin, Mike Lockas, Travis Howard, and my neighbor Rob who let us use his lift at "Garage Mahal," we 24

Results compiled by Dean! Yamada accomplished the transmission swap and the car could once again turn! We were ready to return to the fray in competition with our AX/TT friends. How little we knew just how much of a fight we'd have on our hands, and not from the direction we thought! But I'm getting ahead of myself... Luckily, the time away didn't dull our memories of how to load the car on the trailer, strap it down and get to Mineral Wells with all the other accessories we'd need for the weekend (OK, we actually use a printed checklist so I can't claim that my memory's that good). We looked forward to getting back into the groove - the Time Trial was set to run Course #3 which is Christy's favorite because it has the fast chicane on the back stretch. If you do it right, it's just a little wiggle. If you do it wrong, the

results can be pretty spectacular. Since Christy and I drive the same car, we have quite the rivalry as to who will be faster on a given day. It's pretty much all up to the driver - you can't put a lot of blame on the car. So I was pleased that after our long hiatus I manged to pull out a victory for our first day back. After an appropriate amount of smack talk, we buttoned down the car and trailer and went to dinner with the majority of the Time Trial participants at the Mesquite Pit - good barbeque and conversation is always welcome after a fun track day. It was great to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones as well (yes, it really is not just the cars, it's the people). The next morning came quickly enough and we arrived to walk the Autocross course. It used about

2/3 of the area at Mineral Wells so we anticipated a workout, and we weren't disappointed. The course wasn't really as fast as it looked, though - Jerrett Jan's design was just devious enough that it would catch you out if you weren't careful. Still, Christy and I were within a few tenths of a second of each other by lunch, and after discussing what was working and what wasn't, we were ready to try it again during the afternoon runs. But first we had to work the course for the opposite driving group. We had noticed some isolated rainshowers popping up on radar around the area, but the forecast still looked pretty benign overall. After a bit it started to sprinkle, which was mostly viewed as welcome relief from the heat. None of us on course thought much of it at first. However, a small cell just to the south started producing lightning. Since it

sounded close, we called in all the workers, anticipating that the cell would quickly pass, and we would then resume our runs. The rain picked up slightly, and most people got in their car to wait it out. Christy and I, along with 3 or 4 others, piled into the back of the Truxster (the club's panel van), figuring on a 5 or 10 minute wait. Most of us only had a slim view out of the back of the truck underneath the door, but Christy had moved up front by the side window. Within less than a minute, the rain was completely horizontal, visibility dropped to about 50 feet, and the wind started rocking the Truxster violently enough that we feared that it was about to tip over. It was then that Christy began yelling a most peculiar phrase: "The porta-potties are coming!! The porta-potties are coming!!" Now, I can't speak for the others, but my brain had a very hard time process-

ing that statement, because it was not a combination of words that I ever expected to hear. Nonetheless, the meaning finally dawned on me as I witnessed one of the porta-potties slide by on its side and smash head-on into Carey Spreen's car. The other one continued on another 50 yards or so down course. Fortunately, the collision only caused a minor scratch. Within the next minute, it was all over and we all emerged from our shelters with mouths agape. The rain completely stopped but there was about an inch of water running across the entire concrete surface. The Autocross course was effectively destroyed, with cones ending up 30 feet out in the grass. It was amazing to see that a fully-loaded enclosed trailer had been moved 20 feet, the porta-potties lay on their sides 100 yards from where they

ceived of the title of "Return to the Fray" - but boy was I surprised at just how apt that title turned out to be! We were reminded that, as much as we like the competition between each other and our friends, sometimes we're no match for a fight with Mother Nature.

Cliff ’s Ramblings: Life as it Unfolds By Cliff Blackshear

R

ecently someone said they would love for me to write more stuff that is technical in nature. Repairs I have done or watched unfold as a shop foreman. After some thought, this hit me (it isn’t really technical, just in that realm). I wonder how many understand what goes on in a combustion chamber of an engine. I then realized I do not know where to start with how I view the subject. So here is my streaming thought process or, maybe uh rambling. Fuel is injected and then compressed. Next it is ignited. Then that ignition process produces an explosion. It is heat energy expanding and pushing a piston downward. Downward motion of piston is translated into rotating motion by a crankshaft. This energy is transmitted to the wheels via many components. In the combustion chamber a flame front is produced. When a spark plug is energized and ignites the fuel-air mixture, that flame front needs to be over 1700 degrees F to be efficient. As the fuel is burned the temperature of the explosion lessens outwards from point of ignition. The outer areas of a piston are

the coolest temperature areas of the explosion. This is called the quench area. In the quench area lies many unwanted emissions. Hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen: all gases that are proven to be extremely harmful to humans. Brain damage, lung damage, multiple types of cancers can occur if we are constantly exposed to these gases. That’s a fact. It is proven scientifically. The less oxygen that is exhausted from a chamber the more complete the combustion process. This is an indication that the combustion process is efficient. Oxygen sensors (O2s), are used to measure oxygen content exiting a combustion chamber. From cold start it takes nearly a minute for O2s to reach an operating temperature. On a 911 for example two sensors are mounted before the catalytic converters and two are mounted behind the catalytic converters. The two mounted aft are used to determine catalyst efficiency. When the cats are working the aft sensors basically flat line or have a flat voltage reading. If they are mirroring front O2 sensor readings that indicates the catalysts has failed. The gases that exit that chamber are controlled by an incredible number of variables. Chamber/ piston shape, compression ratio, fuel atomization, spark plug

location, temperature of incoming air, temperature of chamber walls, timing of ignition point, timing of injection point, length of injection time, engine load, torque demand, engine RPM etc. etc. So where has Porsche gone to achieve more power and meet emission mandates? Direct injection and intake design changes. Less vehicle weight and more efficient transmissions. Better tire technology, faster microprocessors. Anticipatory control in the fuel/ ignition system is bordering on outright witchcraft. It is amazing. This subject alone boggles my little blue collar mind. Overall performance has increased yet again is every area of design. And the cars are just breathtaking to look at. I cannot wait for the 991 GT3 to come out. I have spoken multiple times with our recently departed “Flying Lizard,” Abel. They just won in ALMS GT class for the first time this year. The current RSR is getting killed everywhere except on short tracks. The 997 design is getting old. That team is salivating for the 2013 991 RSR to hit their garage in Sonoma Ca. It is gonna be special. Porsche is gonna come out swinging in 2013 for the ALMS series. Burgeimester and Long will have something really cool to play with next year. I cannot wait.
