Drifting: National Events, Past and Future By John Hamilton, Region President

P

orsche Parade 2013: We just got back from a fabulous week in Traverse City, Michigan, host to this year’s Porsche Parade. Like they say (especially if you’re in a Porsche), “it’s not just the destination . . . it’s the journey!” Such was the case as we once again (like last year) were able to stay at a motor inn on the real Route 66 on the way to and from Parade (thanks to our caravan partners and route planners, Rob and Sandy Bowen). The trip was fun, our tours and events in northern Michigan were great (even though we suffered through a frosty 70-80 degrees each day), the cars were beautiful (including the surprise unveiling of both the 50th Anniversary 911 and the 2014 GT3!), and the people were the best! You’ll read about many of our performers and winners in other articles in Slipstream. 2014: Next year’s Parade will be held in Monterey, California, June 15-21. That will be both a beautiful destination and journey. Do you think there will be many Porsches there . . . especially in California? Hmmm. Registration typically opens in March, so it might be

time already to start planning for it (I know we are). Other special upcoming events: • Boxstoberfest 2013 -- September 6,7,8 in Fredericksburg, TX. Visit boxstoberfest.com. • Escape 2013 -- October 24, 25, 26, 27 in Los Angeles, CA. Visit escape2013.pca.org.

Speaking of the Porsche Parade, we have many Mavericks who volunteer and work behind the scenes at Parade to make the program a success. Yes, it costs money to go, but the workers are all volunteers! One of the key volunteers for several years has been our own James Shoffit. He, with a lot of help from wife Wendy, takes all the rankings, photos, scores,

awards, etc. and builds them into PowerPoint presentations for each of the award banquets. So while many of us might be out on a tour or track, James is back in the ol’ hotel room creating masterpieces on his laptop for that night’s show. So thank you, James Shoffit, for all you do, not only for our Maverick Region, but for the national Porsche Club of America. Enjoy your gift certificate to the Silver Fox steakhouse in Grapevine, and take a break from the computer!

Carey On...

By Carey Spreen, Managing Editor We hope you have been able to keep cool this summer. As I write this in mid-July, it has been raining for two days straight, and the high temperature was 79 degrees F. Not our typical summer in terms of weather, but in terms of scheduled Region events, July and August are pretty slow in these parts. Unless you went to the Porsche Parade, held this year in Traverse City, Michigan, on the shores of Lake Michigan. About three dozen Mavericks made the 1200mile journey this year, and, as usual, it was well worth the drive. See the centerspread in this issue for results and photos.

In this issue we also cover the annual Autos in the Park Concours d’Elegance, put on again by Maverick Region member Jack Griffin at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. This event brings out all sorts of vintage, classic, and custom cars from all over the Metroplex, and Maverick Region gets a corner all to ourselves. If you haven’t been to one, check out the article to see what it’s like. We are officially announcing our raffle drawing for a one year lease of a 2014 Porsche Macan, with the winner to be announced at our All Member Party in January -- see the ad on page 8. There are also previews of upcoming PCA events: Boxstoberfest, to be held in September in Fredericksburg, and PCA Escape in

October, this year to be held in Los Angeles. Unlike the Porsche Parade, these events focus not on competition but fun and relaxation, although both events still involve driving your Porsche! If you have a teenager in the house that is looking forward to driving your Porsche, welcome to the club. For a teenager’s-eyeview of a performance driving school that teaches your new driver how to really control a car, see the article in this issue. Finally I would like to welcome HoosierTiresDirect.com as our newest advertiser -- see their ad below. If you are into Autocross, Time Trials, Drivers’ Ed, or Club Racing, you may be interested in their services!

Autos in the Park: Mavericks at Dallas’ Premier Concours d’Elegance By Renee Farinella, Region Secretary

elebrating its eighth annual car show, Autos in the Park 2013 took place Sunday, June 2, and proved to be another spectacular Concours in its signature distinctive style and relaxing setting amidst the shading trees, fountains, and breezes at the Cooper Aerobics Center in North Dallas. For this primarily earlier-model event, much time, effort, and care is invested by the participants preparing their cars for display and competitionby-category. Maverick three-year member, and this year’s winner in the 997 category, Jason Morski, said he got his “Porsche-itis” from event founder and Region Concours Co-Chair Jack Griffin. Here is the list of awards in the Porsche categories, including winners and year models. The judging criteria is People’s Choice voting-by-ballot based on car uniqueness and condition. 356

A variety of over 200 cars were entered representing North Texas marque clubs, for which there were also categoryspecific awards: Maserati, FerBest of Show winner Michael rari, Lamborghini, Harling with his ‘58 Speedster Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Audi, Corvette, Chevrolet, Ford, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Lotus.

Boxstoberfest 2013: September in Fredericksburg By Michael Shassere, Boxstoberfest 2013 Planning Committee

W

e are pleased to announce that registration for Boxstoberfest 2013 is now open. Boxstoberfest will be held September 6 - 8, 2013, in Fredericksburg, Texas. Last year, over 200 fellow Porsche enthusiasts were in attendance, and traveled some of the best roads to enjoy their Porsches in the US. Attendees also enjoyed being with other Porsche owners -- both old friends and many new ones. As in the past, all registrations are handled through www.clubregistration. net. Additional details for the event are on the official website, www. boxstoberfest.com, or on Facebook. Our routes are being finalized (to make sure there aren’t any

8 August

last minute construction areas to slow us down), and the rally and scenic routes are being given a few twists to make them a little more challenging -- and more fun. On Friday, you are welcome to pick up either the regular or scenic drive maps if you would like to pre-drive them. Many people who do the regular route on Saturday pick up the Scenic route map and drive it Friday or Sunday. Event central will once again be the Hangar Hotel. Registration check-in on Friday night, during Saturday morning drive line-up, and Saturday after drive social and dinner will all be at the Hangar Hotel. Boxstoberfest has the entire hotel booked for the weekend, all 54 rooms -- and, as it has become

a trend from past events, is already 100% booked and has a waitlist (it actually booked 100% the day the event closed last year). We do have a block of rooms at the Fredericksburg Inn, and the Inn on Barons Creek. There are numerous Bed and Breakfasts in town, too. All the accommodation details, as well as full event details are on the website. We look forward to seeing you at Boxstoberfest 2013. If you have any questions, drop us an email at info@boxstoberfest.com. As we get closer to the actual dates, registered attendees will get very detailed messages regarding specific event times, what to bring and not bring, event rules, and PCA required notifications.

Destination Restoration: The Dreaded “While You’re In There . . .” By Ash Seidl-Staley

I

n a previous Slipstream issue I described the smoke problem I had on my 944, and I am happy to report the problem has been fixed, but man did it take a lot of time, patience, and GREEN!

Turns out that as time went on, the smoking got worse and worse, and eventually the leak got so bad I was able to see that oil was seeping from the exhaust manifold port at the cylinder head. I had feared for quite some time that my cylinder head gasket was failing as it would constantly overheat, had liquid forming at my muffler, and had the infamous “frothy milkshake” showing in my oil system. My suspicions were confirmed after a quick compression test when it was determined that not only was the gasket blown, the cylinder head itself was warped!

Photos by the Author

it re-surfaced, and checked for proper port sizes and valve clearances. Luckily there was still enough of the head left for the shop to resurface it, and nothing needed to be done with my valve seats. Next on the list included giving the shop my new head gasket set from Victor Reinz, which I had on hand, and beginning the daunting task of cleaning the main block. A further inspection determined that the rest of the engine was mechanically sound: the bearings were in phenomenal shape, the pistons held firm to their positions, and there was not a single oil leak in sight. Though, unfortunately, while

Immediately light bulbs and alarms went off in my head. The difficult-to-describe characteristics of the smoke were because the car was leaking a mix of oil, gas, and coolant over the hot exhaust. Not having an engine stand equipped to do the job, or a large enough jack available to work on the car at my apartment, I sent her to a Plano-based import shop. I would like to tell you that it was repaired and back on the road lickety split, but the reality is that it took exactly a month and four days until I was able to drive away. I came down with a bad case of the “while you are in theres,” and though I had to sacrifice time, I practically received a brand new 944 ready for another 25 years of life on the open road! So what was done, you might ask? To start, the list was small; get the cylinder head out of the car, get

Shiny new cylinder head in place 10 August

Right down to the pistons the cylinder head was out, the repair list grew even longer: we replaced the balance belt, timing belt, thermostat, two tensioners, and all the studs, bolts, and washers associated with the top half of the engine, as well as making sure everything was cleaned, tied down and torqued properly. Once the head was back in the car I added more to the list, giving the green light to replace all vacuum hosing, worn out fuel lines, and to inspect the engine wiring harness. Close to the end of April I received a call to come down and test drive the car. Hearing her fire up was extremely exuberating, but before I even took off out of the parking lot I knew something was wrong. With the newly found power being pumped to the rear wheels, the engine mounts couldn’t handle the stress. The car violently vibrated nearly to the point where I was afraid of shattering my hatchback glass. Another trip up on the stands proved me right, the rubber on the engine mounts didn’t even exist anymore, and the engine was basically bolted in, metal on metal. A good $200 later and some new rubber exhaust mounts (why

not, right?) and the 944 purred like a vicious kitten. The entire endeavor wasn’t cheap, but being able to help, and supply my own parts, resulted in all the repairs being done at a fraction of the intended cost. All that I have left to do is to meticulously tighten every bolt and screw on the car so it can handle the new lively “S” spec 10.9:1 compression ratio!

Just a little elbow grease is all it takes.

Would you like to have your restoration project featured in an upcoming issue of Slipstream? If so, contact me at ashseidlstaley@gmail.com so that we can put together an article about it.

Summer Kickoff Picnic and Rally: DLBF -- But Smiling Photo Credits as noted

It was one of the last Maverick Region events of the spring, the vaunted Summer Kick-Off Picnic Rally. A true novice of the Porsche way, and proud owner of a recently purchased 944S, I thought the Gimmick Rally sounded like a lot of fun. After explaining to a friend my plan to participate, I recruited him to be my Driver. I would take command as the Navigator; he would follow my instructions at the wheel. Mistake? You be the judge.

to the pre-rally meeting outside the Ball Park in Arlington, we eyed the competition. Strong, but beatable. Participants included the full range from first timers (us) to veterans (them) of the task ahead. We were welcomed warmly.

It was a beautiful day, and we started out with great expectations. Beautiful bright red Porsche with the sunroof off, sun shining, moderate temperatures, life could not get better! As we drove up

The first landmark to identify was a billboard outside of the Ball Park complex. Ah-ha! We spotted it quickly and saw our first competitor wasting critical time

Mr. Don Sebert gave the teams their instructions, and then we were on our way to the starting line. One piece of art after another, each car carefully spaced out in twominute intervals for their departure so no one would be following another too closely. We started in the third-from-last position, but just knew we would move up quickly.

We found the next landmark with ease, and quickly moved our way out to the country part of the rally. Things were back on track, and in the process of going to the next landmark, we passed yet another Porsche team and waved to them enthusiastically. Maybe we were getting a little too confident. This relaxing joy ride in the country unexpectedly started losing

The third landmark is where things began to get dicey. We missed it and had to retrace the course. We could not find it anywhere. My driver was very gracious in his acceptance of the possibility that the Navigator may have made a mistake.

a left, or was that a curved straight? Shortly down the road, the team following us turned around. Still confident, and somewhat defiant, I said, “Hold course. We are going the right way.” After some choice words of encouragement from the driver, we chose to turn around. Once again back and on track, we entered the quaint old area town of Cedar Hill looking for the next landmark. “Can’t these people make signs you can read?” I thought to myself. No longer so gracious, my driver started questioning my ancestry and something about my right to own a Porsche. Drivers! They are so temperamental. A few red lights, a couple of stop signs and a Game Warden with an attitude later, we arrived at the Cedar Hill State Park finish line. Meeting our newest friends in a great lakeside park and the delicious hot dogs and hamburgers finished, it was now time for

f you were at the Porsche Parade last month in Traverse City, Michigan, you know that almost 40 attendees from Maverick Region represented your region very well. If you didn’t attend, maybe these results and photos will convince you to attend next year’s Parade in Monterey, California.

sealed cars. Unfortunately, no trophy this time, with a fourth place, but lots of learning lessons, and he showed an absolutely beautiful car! Rally – New rally partners Don Breithaupt and Carey Spreen took home fourth place trophies in the Unequipped class and remained friends! In fact, they plan to pair Carey and Don: up again in “Next year, second Monterey. place is not Additionan option!” ally, Myra and Jerry Sutton took 11th in Navigational class, and Kevan Davis navigated for Douglas Dunn of Chesapeake Region, taking 15th in Unequipped.

Gimmick Rally – Bob and Linda Knight brought home a third place trophy, as did Myra and Jerry Sutton. It was a nine-way tie for third place! Autocross – The ladies had a great showing! Robyn Howard took another first place (Class S02L), as did Myra Sutton (Class S11L) and I (Class M04L). The men weren’t too shabby, either! Both Carey Spreen (Class P07) and Ed Mayo (Class

I03) took first place trophies, as well. This year’s Ladies’ Top Time of Day eluded me again, as another driver came out, who was an SCCA champion Wendy at speed on several the Autocross course times over, brought her 993, and walloped me. I did have second overall fastest Ladies’ time, though . . . does that count? Several other Maverick autocrossers were just edged out of trophy range, but showed extremely well: Travis Howard, second, class S02 Jerry Sutton, third, class S11 Mark Steele, second, class P10 Lisa Steele, second, class P10L Nikolaus Klemmer, fourth, class P13 James Shoffit, fourth, class M04 Next year, James will classify the car correctly, and hopefully end up with a trophy. I’m sure the Steeles will bring other wheels as well, which won’t bump them out of their normal Showroom Stock class. Tech Quiz – Carey Spreen brought home a third place trophy (914 quiz), and Alan Bambina (356 quiz) took third as well, although just out of

trophy range. Travis Howard took a respectable sixth place in class (924/944/968 quiz). Carey Spreen finished “hitting the cycle” with a second place in class in the Newsletter contest for Slipstream (regions with 800 or more members). The cycle? 1st Autocross, 2nd Newsletter, 3rd Tech

Quiz, and 4th Rally. OH, and as a bonus, I’d consider winning a SET OF TIRES a bonafide HOME RUN! Congrats, Carey, on an awesome Parade! My apologies if I’ve forgotten any awards or anyone. So who’s in for Monterey next year? That one will be sure to fill very quickly!

avid Cook, CEO and Founder of Eagles Canyon Raceway, comes from a remarkable British family who began manufacturing airplane wings and aerospace products in 1917. Visionary stuff. While David has lived all over the globe, he found himself continually drawn to Texas (his grandchildren and other family members are all Texans!). By 2004 he had sold his aviation business and was looking in a completely different direction for his new business: finding a place near the Metroplex for a racetrack. Driven by his quest for interesting topography (and a place where he didn’t need to worry about

Photo courtesy David Cook decibel levels!), David worked with fellow driver/real estate friend, Steve Watkins. They found the perfect spot that incorporated the “component of up and down.” In David’s words, it accurately captures the “true spirit of road racing.” David and his friends enjoy this kind of challenge and technical skill for both cars and motorcycles. Again with the visionary touch, David contacted fellow Brit, friend and Formula 1 premier racing instructor (according to F1 Racing Magazine) Rob Wilson to be the principal designer of the track. “Rob’s knowledge and experience was

applied to the Eagles Canyon facility such that the track is challenging and competitive for drivers and teams from all types and classes of professional racing series. Drivers have the opportunity to leverage features such as camber and elevation changes, mul-

The Maverick Region just might have been one of the first clubs to hold an event there in late 2007 when the track first became operational. The track (2.5 miles of asphalt, 11 gripping turns, 340 ft. overall track elevation change) continues to improve. Besides the Eagles Canyon Grill and two 50” LCD TVs, there are now 93 octane, 100 octane, 104 octane Unleaded, and 110 octane Leaded Top Racing Fuels available, plus covered paddocks and lock-up garages in a variety of packages. There is also a large variety of packages available for any driving enthusiast according to their info-packed website. “The Eagles Canyon Raceway Drivers’ Club is a private and exclusive members-only organization. Cliff ’s Ramblings: Still Ramblin’ Along By Cliff Blackshear

S

o the dog days of summer are here, and I had a life changing experience in May. Yep, still ramblin’ along. The 991s are proving to be bulletproof. The new Cayman is here, and folks seem to either love the new body style or cannot stand it. Few want to go to the track cause it is just too hot out. And work is just as interesting as ever. Thank you all so much for the concern and kind words after my recent heart attack. It was minor pain-wise, and my little technician mind found it interesting, while alarming. Thirty-six hours after visiting an ER, I found myself

driving back home with a 2.5 x 15 mm stent in an artery. Amazing. I have come to the conclusion that if you maintain good health all your life and nothing like this happens to you prior to age 65, the insurance companies should have to refund you enough money to buy a new GT3. It seems fair to me. Anyway, we have a very unusual engine repair in the shop. A 2009 997 Twin Turbo with low miles, and the check engine light is on due to constant cylinder misfiring, plus the owner is reporting excessive oil consumption. Brian draws the job and finds the #2 cylinder on the bank one side has huge leak-down numbers. Leakdown is usually under 5%, but this cylinder is over 90% through the exhaust valves. A borescope is inserted

through the sparkplug hole and oil can be seen dripping off one of the exhaust valve guides into the combustion chamber. That was very surprising. One of the two exhaust valves for that cylinder is heavily carboned and no longer seating. So out comes the engine and the bank 1 cylinder head comes off. Lo and behold, a valve spring keeper

is found crushed around the valve guide seal inside the valve spring. No valve keepers were missing from the assembled head. It was a rogue that apparently got in there during assembly. I searched warranty records on the car and found no evidence of any engine work since leaving the factory. We have no history on the car of any engine work. The valve guide was on the ragged edge of maximum allowable specification and the valve spring failed a tension test. So new valve, valve guide, valve spring, and two keepers later, the cylinder head is going back on. All guide seals on that head were replaced after a thorough inspection. Oh yeah, the secondary air passages were clogged which also had set a secondary air failure in the DME fault memory. This September will mark my 41st year of working on Porsches at the dealer level. The 914 2.0, 911 T, E, and S were the cars on the

showroom when I started. I have prepped and serviced everything brought over here since that time. The 997 Twin in the shop is only the second time I have seen a Porsche with what appears to be a factory engine assembly issue. I cannot say absolutely that the engine has not been apart before, but in looking at it on the stand before disassembly I saw no signs of work since original build. The first issue like this I witnessed was a 1977 911S. It was brand new off the transporter and the engine was making horrible squealing sounds from bank 2 valve drive area. Disassembly of that engine revealed a totally clogged oil passage for the camshaft bearing bores. It was totally blocked with aviation sealer. The factory takes these things very seriously, and once I file my report they will look at VIN number ranges from that time frame to

make certain this is an isolated case. I suspect we will never see this again. The 997 Twin sold like hotcakes. It is an amazingly robust car. With the sheer numbers delivered in the DFW area and the fact that no other has come in with this problem, I cannot imagine another out there since the car came out that has this issue.

Here’s a shot of the Spec Boxster that John just did setup work on this week. It’s a new ride for new racer that has a stunning Martini wrap. Oh wait -- you can see it at a future Club Race. It will be its owner’s first Club Race event! Cheers!

Advanced Teen Driving: Notes from a Bondurant School Graduate By Geneva Spreen Editor’s Note: Yes, it’s true -- PCA is not immune from nepotism, and here is your proof. In March of this year, my 16-year-old daughter Geneva attended a two-day Advanced Teen Driving course at the Bondurant School in Chandler, AZ. I asked her to write an article about it in hopes of encouraging other parents of new drivers to consider taking Drivers Ed to the next level . . .

H

ello, and welcome to the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving! I will never forget my experience at this incredibly fun school of driving. I took the two-day Advanced Teen Driving Course, but there are plenty of other classes you can take, and they are for any age. The course I took had many different lessons in it, including a small timed autocross, slalom, and the “famous” skid car. My personal favorite was an exercise simulating positioning yourself in a specific lane in a very short amount of time. There were three different lanes, each with a traffic light above them, controlled by an instructor. When the three lights turned green,

Photos by John Dowd/Bondurant School we floored the gas, reaching 30 mph at first, but getting up to 60 later on. As soon as we got to a certain point, the instructor would change two of the green lights to red, and we would have to maneuver into the lane with the green light and stop. Another one of my favorites was, Slalom exercise at the end of each day, the students were led (each student had their own Camaro SS, by the way) by the instructors on the Bondurant race course. It was so exciting getting to go on a race course and drive it for the first time!

We split up into two groups, one per instructor. In my group, when we were doing an exercise (going over using a stick shift, for example), he was talking to us about his life and was asking us questions about ours, which made it easier to do the exercises, because I was less stressed and just did the driving. My experience at this school was incredible and can’t be summed up into a few words. I had an awesome experience with the instructors, and I caught on really fast to the lessons they had us doing. I had a blast and would definitely do more classes in the future! The author with instructors

Now, the skid car. This was very interesting but also fun to learn. In this exercise, the students learned how to control understeer or oversteer. They have special cars rigged so the instructor in the passenger seat can press a button, and the front or back of the car lifts up just enough to lose some traction, mimicking ice or standing water on the road. It was an interesting feeling, having no control of your car, but that is the whole point: to keep you calm and get you safely out of a bad situation fast. The feeling of losing control of your vehicle is a little scary at first, but then you learn how to control the car and yourself.

The instructors are very nice and supportive. My instructor was Danny Bullock, and he was very calm and easy to trust. He told me everything about my driving that needed to be fixed, or if I was doing it right, he told me that, too. He never yelled at me or told me that I did badly; he just talked to me like a normal human being.

or several years now, the Escape has been one of the most sought-after and exciting events on the PCA calendar. Consisting primarily of tours and social events, this noncompetitive weekend is the perfect relaxing PCA holiday. Held each year in a different area of the country, this weekend is rich with regional flavor and draws a national audience that enjoys a long weekend of spending time with their Porsche cars, Porsche friends, and participating in Porsche activities. Escape to Los Angeles is the theme for 2013, and the Escape is headquartered at the elegant Sheraton Fairplex in Pomona, CA (just outside of LA). Officially the dates are October 24-27, but you are encouraged to come early and stay late. There’s a lot to do! From Pomona we will radiate out on a wide variety of activities. You will find no shortage of things to do, places to go, and food to eat. You will be among 500-600 other

Hard at work, the 2013 Escape team has been busy finalizing the various tour routes throughout Southern California. The Escape will offer a variety of tours of varying lengths and activities to satisfy the interests of every attendee. From a leisurely drive of the San Gabriel Valley highlighting local architecture, the Huntington Gardens, or the Los Angeles Arboretum; to, for the drivers amongst us, exciting mountain

The Nethercutt Collection tours such as the Angeles Crest Highway, Highway 18 to Big Bear Lake, or to Mount Baldy along Glendora Canyon Road. Another option is an all day trip to Joshua Tree National Park, with a stop in Palm Springs for dinner. There are even special tours planned of several unique museums, such as the Nethercutt and Mullin automotive museums, as well as a few intimate tours of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (a NASA nerve center for space exploration), and Space X (a private space exploration company). I’ll get back to the activities with a bit more detail, but for the moment, let’s switch to banquets. The Escape has two official dinners planned, starting on Thursday night with the opening Car Show

Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Drive-in Movie banquet. Remember your high school years, polishing up the car to show off to your friends, cruising to the hamburger stand, and seeing the latest movie at the drive-in? While watching a classic movie (or socializing if you prefer), Escape attendees will munch on Kobe sliders, tacos, fries, margaritas, sodas, and milk shakes. The car show will also include the ever popular “People’s Choice” awards. Don’t forget to pack your letterman’s jacket and bring your girl! On Saturday night, the closing banquet starts with a reception at the NHRA Museum. This museum, housed in a beautifully restored 28,500 square foot Art Deco-style 1939 WPA building, is home to the very essence of American motorsports. More than 80 vehicles are displayed: everything from Ed Iskenderian’s 1925 T Roadster, to Mickey Thompson’s Challenger I, the first American car to go 400

Dinner at the Drive-In

mph. Hors d’oeuvres will be served during the reception. Afterwards, and just a short stroll away, the Gala Dinner will be held in the newlyconstructed Sheraton Fairplex Convention Center. PCA will have exclusive use of the entire facility. Dinner will be three courses, specially prepared for the Escape.

NHRA Museum A no-host bar will be available throughout the night, as well as special guest speakers, exhibits, and of course some great door prizes. All this and more will be part of the Saturday night Gala Dinner. There are numerous museums in the area, such as the Huntington Library, Tournament of Roses House (Wrigley Mansion), Tournament of Roses Float Barns, the 1908 Greene & Greene Gamble House, the Mullin Automotive Museum, the Nethercutt Collection, the Norton Simon Art Museum, and the L.A. County Arboretum. The Escape will feature two historic architectural tours, one based around the Pasadena/San Marino area, and the other showcasing the La Verne, Claremont and Pomona area (including the old Kellogg’s Ranch, now California Polytechnic College). Did you know that, of the 211 registered Historic Sites listed in Los Angeles County, 119 of them are in the city of Pasadena? We have assembled 30-35 sites in the greater Pasadena, South Pasadena and San Marino areas for a self-guided tour, designed for you to spend as much

or as little time as you’d like enjoying these wonders of a bygone era. Turning our attention back to cars: I think you will enjoy the Nethercutt Collection, which houses several hundred exquisite old cars in an early 20th Century automobile salon setting (lots of marble). This array of Concours-winning cars (Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, Palos Verdes, Dana Point and other prestigious events) will make your head spin. It is certainly one of the best car collections in the country. While you are there, you will also see an amazing collection of hood ornaments (Mascots -- does Lalique ring a bell?), brass gas lamps, horns, and other automotive items. Additionally, the Nethercutts did not limit their interests to merely automobiles. Amongst the artistry of the vehicles, you will also find an incredible collection of musical instruments (the largest collection of Orchestrions in the world), listen to an amazing recording of George

Huntington Library Gershwin (that is, an actual recording of George Gershwin) playing “Rhapsody in Blue” on a reproducing piano, listen to one of the world’s biggest pipe organs, and see a collection of incredible 18th and 19th Century furniture. On top of all this, there is a fabulous collection of David Winter cottages, dolls, coins and crystal figurines. One of the more renowned museums in the San Gabriel Valley is the Huntington Library, Art Collection,

and Botanical Gardens. Arrangements have been made for a private tour of the grounds and museums accompanied by morning tea. For you drivers, you’ll definitely see the twisties, catch some incredible vistas, have some great food and see some of Southern California’s rural beauty. You’ll get a little appreciation of what living in LA means -- being able to visit the ocean, snow, desert, mountains and forests in an hour or less (OK, OK, traffic permitting . . .). If you are fortunate enough to drive a Cayenne to the Escape, we have a tour just for you. We know that you have heard that every Cayenne was designed to be a competent off road vehicle, and some of us actually take our Cayennes off road. Our tour is designed for the NOVICE off-road driver, as we help you learn offroading and build your confidence. Technically, this is an “off paved road” tour; it is not truly “off road.” As you can see, you have plenty to look forward to in Escape 2013. Did I forget to mention Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, air museums (pick one of many), Griffith Park, the Reagan Library, the California missions? The list goes on and on. Registration opens in July, so mark your calendars, and keep your eye on our website and PCA’s eBrake News for more information: http://escape2013.pca.org
