SPROCKETS: Packing a 911 for the Porsche Parade By David Robertson, Region President If you haven’t been lucky enough to attend a Porsche Parade, just imagine around 900 Porsches from every conceivable model line and vintage, comprised of over 1500 PCA members and families, along with an entourage of PCNA and Porsche AG executives and associated vendors all in one spot for a week. That is the scene at Porsche Parade, and it is spectacular! For those of you that are unfamiliar, Parade is an annual gathering of the PCA for a week of events that include both casual and competitive driving and concours, tours, banquets, lots of events for children, and even a PCA member art show and golf tournament! As I previously mentioned, last year in Spokane, Tracy and I flew up and rented a car. Although we ended up with a Mustang convertible due to a rental counter glitch that worked in my favor for the first time ever, there is still something just not quite right when you don’t have a Porsche at a major PCA event. This year, with a comparatively short eight-hour drive to Lake of the Ozarks, and over 60 Maverick Region members registered, it was a no-brainer to pack up the 911 and hit the road. Packing a 911 for a weeklong active trip sounds daunting at first, but as the process started moving along and items were fitted in to every nook and cranny of the car, I was very impressed with the amount of “stuff” we were able to fit. Two suitcases, two backpacks, two full sets of golf clubs, and a couple of bags full of various “why not, we are not flying” type items. The moment of truth came when we went to pack the 911 back up for the trip home. Laid out in the hotel room were not only all the items listed above but all of the great items that you get when you are at Parade, including lots of cool stuff from Porsche and other vendors, giveaways during the events, and items purchased from the Parade Store. There were also really cool -- but really bulky and fragile -trophies that we were very fortunate to receive this year.

As I surveyed these items that seemed to be stacked up in the hotel room as if in an overstocked warehouse club, my first thought was that there is absolutely no way all this stuff is getting home with us in that car. Well to my surprise, after some trial and error and discovery of little spaces good for stuffing one shoe or a couple of T-shirts here and there, everything fit and it was a comfortable ride. With the conversations I had during Parade week with people on the National Executive Committee and other region members, I can tell you that the Maverick Region is getting a lot of attention for the great things 2 August

our event volunteers are doing. As name after name was called for either a national award or an event win or place I couldn’t help but feel what an honor it is to be the President of the Maverick Region PCA!

MAV OF THE MONTH: John Sandusky John Sandusky is a quiet behind-the-scenes contributor to our Maverick Region. He has led the instructors at our Drivers’ Education for more than a decade as our Chief Driving Instructor. When his boys were younger, they were each pressed into service as front gate keepers at our driving events (not a lot of fun at 6:30 am for a teenager). Always working to protect the safety of our drivers and coaches, he has been open to new ideas and adjustments while ensuring the fun and safe etiquette of our track-driving program. Thank you, John, for everything you do for the Maverick Region! Enjoy your $75.00 gift certificate compliments of Autobahn Porsche.

2018 ABCDE Car Show By Pat Carmichael

Another All British and European Car Day, or as they promoted, the ABCDE(??), has come and gone. (Hmmm, “ABCDE.” Not sure how they came up with that designation, but it works.) The Maverick Region Porsche Club had over 40 cars in attendance, which was by far the best participation of any participating brand. Way to go Mavericks!! Once again the venue, a star attraction of this event, made for an enjoyable experience. Coupling the lake, the hills, and the wonderfully big shady trees for us to hang out under in our little foldable chairs, along with a couple of hundred interesting cars, made this event what well-attended. There was a full array of vehicles, from the well-known to the seldomseen emblems, some ultra-rare: there were Alphas, Bugattis, MGs, Jags, VWs, Porsches, Austins, Rolls, Bentleys, Minis, Mercedes, Citroens, BMWs, Opels, Ferraris, Fiats, and many more, most of which I had no idea what they were. This made for frequent conversations 6 August

photos by Richard Cross and Jim Hirsch asking, “What is this?” and then the interesting conversations, all of which added to the fun! Speaking of fun, the food trucks were there: Mini donuts, Ice cream, Carnitas Tacos, and every kind of egg sandwich you could think of. Yum!! An interesting part of this car show is that it is experienced not only by us car enthusiasts, but also the standard throng of weekenders that jog, bike and stroll through White Rock Lake Park. The lake people were there in full force. Thousands made their way through the long winding corridors of cars. We also saw just about every type of bicycle engineering currently available: pedaling with their feet, hands, or both; standard upright positions, prone; single rider, dual riders, no baby, with baby, with dog, without dog, etc . . . Did I say there were a lot of kids? The “car show” is a judged event. The car show participants vote for their favorites of each brand. The voting goes on during the morning early afternoon. This brings the

enthusiasts up close and personal, perusing the cars, looking for the details of distinction: how clean, how original, how rare, or if they are just “cool.” Here’s the outcome of the Porsche voting:

Second Ziad Blaik 1981 928S EURO Third Rob W. 1973 914S

This year’s show is in the record books and we can all look forward to next year!!

Porsche Promenade: It’s never too hot for Mavericks By Mike Mahoney

Porsche

10 August

Promenade

So how hot is it? Does it really matter? Not to our Texas tough Maverick’s it doesn’t! Don’t get me wrong - Sunday afternoon on June 24 was no exception. Regardless of the heat we had a great showing at 2018’s 2nd People’s Choice Car Show. Close to 50 enthusiasts brought their precious Porsche’s to Lakeside Market in Plano to compete in the Summer show. From 356s to Carrera GT and GT2RS we had some beautiful cars to peruse and vote as one of your top 10 favorites. The People’s Choice show is a lot of fun. There is no pressure. Just bring your car, hang out with your friends, and vote for your favorites. The top 10 favorites win an award. The Maverick Region holds two People’s Choice shows and two top down show and shine shows per year. Maverick Region holds two Show and Shine and two People’s Choice shows per year, one per season. Our next event is a Show and Shine, to be held on Sunday, September 9 in Aubrey, TX. Look for more information in this issue.

Kruder’s Cars & Conversation By Bill Kruder Once again -- you guessed it – this person and I met at an “impromptu” at Lakeside in Plano about two years ago. Many of you will know his car, particularly the ‘94 968; it’s been Porsche of the Month and on the cover of Slipstream. He has also been a contributor to Slipstream, and when it came time to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the 968, he managed to round up more 968s than many of us will ever see in our lifetime, all in one place. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . .

Rob Adams, Enthusiast since 2002, Owner 1988 911 coupe and 1994 968 coupe 12 August

photos courtesy of Rob Adams Bill Kruder: You sound like you might be from here? Rob Adams: No, I was actually born in Japan; my dad was a pilot in the Army Air Corps, so we moved around a lot. I was only in Japan for a year, then we moved to Virginia for a bit. Our next stop was Germany, followed by Alabama, then to Brownwood, Texas. That’s where I went to high school, so I guess I call that home. BK: How about College then? RA: I really wanted to go to UT in Austin, but my dad thought that was too much of a party school (laughing), so I went to Howard Payne University; it’s a small private Baptist school in Brownwood. BK: I understand you had an interesting college job? RA: Oh yes I did. Kohler Bath has a pretty big operation in Brownwood. Dad thought it would be a good idea to earn a living while going to school, so I was in the factory where they manufactured toilets. My job was in quality control and I tested the toilets by dropping objects in them to ensure they worked. We were affectionately known as “turd testers” (laughing). BK: Oh gosh not sure where to go from there (laughing), but then what happened?

RA: Well I left there for a small bank. Later I joined a bank in Midland; this was 1981 when oil was booming. I truly thought I had landed in a great spot at the right time, but little did I know: about the day after I arrived it all came crashing down. I was in the retail side of things and I managed to last about seven years. BK: So how did you end up in Dallas? RA: As luck would have it, the bank president in Midland moved to Dallas. I knew him pretty well, and in 1988 he offered me a job here. BK: Is this the same bank you work for now? RA: No -- I moved a few times. Today I’m with BBVA as a private banker in the Wealth Management area, where I manage some 50 clients with my team. BK: Where did your interests in cars come from? RA: When I was 13 my dad built a dune buggy. Dad was a fanatic about building and later restoring cars, so my brother Jerry and I were his team. As I recall, Jerry, being older, was the hands on the wrenches with him, and I was the guy cleaning and scrubbing the parts. I look back at that and think it’s what gave me the understanding of what the parts actually did and why. BK: Where did the Porsche thing come from? RA: My dad bought Jerry and me, for our first car, a 70 VW Bug. Let’s clarify: he bought it and we paid him back every penny -- it was more like a loan. So I guess that was the start of the German air-cooled thing for me. My dad also always admired Porsche and came close to buying one in Germany. Then years later he took me to the local dealer

to look at them. I guess he still deep down wanted one but it was not practical with the kids and all, so we just looked. BK: So when did you first drive one? RA: Oh, I still remember that day it 1977. I was driving a red Trans Am and went to Bob Miller Porsche in Austin where they had just received the Martini Edition of the 924, so I took it for a test drive. Well, I couldn’t shake the desire to drive another, so some time later I went back to test drive a 911. Well, he gladly threw me the keys to the 924, but for the 911 he said “jump in, I drive” (laughing). BK: When did you finally own one? RA: It was a long time coming; actually I was about to buy a Harley. My wife, M’Lynn, said “you’re not a Harley guy, you’re a sports car guy,” so heck, I bought a 911. BK: Now I’ve heard there is more to the story?

RA: So this was 2002. We bought from a place in Rockwall. It seemed like a great car, but shortly thereafter we had to have the engine rebuilt. We loved that car but only had it for about two years. We ended up selling to a club member, Chris Summers. Chris and I are friends today. We would see each other two to three times a year, and every time I saw the car I wanted it back. Well fast forward about 12 years, and Chris was ready to buy something new, so I bought my car back; this was March of 2017.

beautiful ‘94 in Springdale, AR, so we went up, checked it out, and shipped it back.

BK: Now tell me about the 968? RA: In spring of 2011 I saw a black 968 and loved the look of it. Because of the small production runs I thought it would be a cool car to have. So I did some research, learning all I could, and almost bought two others before this one, but neither could pass the PPI. So I was looking on eBay and found this

Doesn’t get any better than that.

BK: Let’s go back to the 911. I know there was a special moment with your dad? RA: Gosh it was, it was in 2002. We bought the 911 for first time. My Dad was up for a visit and we went out for a drive. Well after a bit, I just pulled over and said “Dad, you drive.” So we do the walk around, he gets in and all those decades later, always wanting to own a Porsche, he was finally getting his first drive.

Maverick Marktpreis: Porsche Values by Peter Wen Porsche valuation is a highly interested topic to many enthusiasts and collectors. Whether we want to admit it or not, our Porsches are investments. We want them to hold their value, and perhaps even appreciate over time. In this new Slipstream feature, Maverick Marktpreis, we highlight actual recent auction results to keep you abreast of the latest activities. This month we take a close look at 911 Turbo from the 997.1 generation. Total 911 magazine suggested 997 is

the best generation of 911 in an op-ed piece last year. The famed twin-turbo 3.6L Mezger engine, rated at 480 hp, is good for 3.9 seconds, 0-60 mph acceleration time. Excellence magazine’s Porsche Buyer’s Guide offered these price ranges: Turbo Coupe (2007-09) - $60,000-$75,000 Turbo Cabriolet (2008-09) - $65,000-$80,000

A Tale of Two Boxsters By Joann Talty My husband had a self-imposed annual sales goal. I had known of this goal since I met him, but assumed it would take time. In December 2013, he reached his goal and began a lengthy search for his reward. Night after night, he shopped for Boxsters on Cars.com and Autotrader. After researching IMS bearing issues in older models, he quickly realized his dream Boxster would be newer than planned. While he hunted, I panicked. Where will we put a third car? Are we buying a new house with a three-car garage too? Why a manual? Between his knee replacement and my spinal fusion, that won’t be fun. Where will he take this car? Does he really need a third car to run to the golf course and Starbucks? I offered alternative reward ideas – most of them vacation destinations.

Nearly a year passed, and Pat hadn’t found his car. He missed out on at least five cars because they weren’t as advertised, or he called too late. When 2014 ended, he reached his annual sales goal again, and I eased up on the questioning. I wasn’t getting anywhere anyway. Instead, I focused on what I do best and shared my input on cars he considered. My color commentary clearly annoyed him. In April 2014, he showed me a Carmona Red 2007 Boxster S, and I found it very attractive. Since turning a corner months ago, I encouraged him to act quickly. I applauded his patience and commitment to his budget. He negotiated a deal on the phone, hired a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection, and booked a flight. Two days later, he flew to Savannah and drove home in his brandnew toy, so excited he forgot to pack his sunscreen and hat. I didn’t accompany him much the first six weeks, but Pat was lovin’ life. He showed it off to friends, lovingly hand20 August

washed it, and gave me the coveted left side of the garage (enabling him to park frighteningly close to the right wall to open his door far enough.) He claimed no knee pain getting in and out or driving. He suggested a two day road trip to visit Texas wineries, dine on wood-fired pizza under the stars, and play golf in Oklahoma. Who can turn that down? Top down the entire trip, my long locks tangled within the first hour. I learned to never wear it down. We enjoyed curvy country roads and conversations with car guys. I began to appreciate the Boxster and wanted to drive it. He taught me golf -- surely he could teach me to drive a six-speed. Instead, he suggested Sears driving school. Soon after, we entered an empty church lot on a Sunday afternoon. I spotted a boy in a Jeep learning parallel parking between cones. Perhaps he envied me zooming about the lot, shifting all the way up to fourth gear. Only once did Pat nearly pee his pants when I downshifted from fourth to third and heard a millisecond grind as I mistakenly put it in first. A month later, we took a more significant road trip. We packed two sets of clubs in the trunk with a garment bag of wedding formalwear. In the frunk, we loaded two suitcases, two backpacks, and golf shoes. A lunchsize cooler of water fit underneath my knees in the passenger seat, along with plenty of sunscreen and hats. For ten days we spent roughly 30 hours in the car: Dallas – Denver – Durango – Santa Fe – Albuquerque – Dallas. I nervously drove two hours of this trip when he tired, and surprisingly, nothing hurt. Upon our return, I admit I fully turned the corner. I loved this Boxster! We joined the Porsche Club and enjoyed PCA tours. Pat experienced the thrill of DE weekends. More and more of our life was now centered around this car, and 2016 flew by. At some point, I suggested I should have a Boxster too. He proposed it should be a reward for a goal I set, and slowly began to browse car ads again. Upon reviewing the 2017 PCA tour calendar and comparing it to Pat’s golf schedule, he decided we wouldn’t do the Fortunata Winery Tour so he

could play in a tournament. “Maybe you won’t be doing the Fortunate Winery Tour,” I replied. Several seconds passed before he agreed to work with me and help me overcome my fear of inclines – specifically, complete stops on inclines with a car close behind. He also insisted I take a friend who could drive a manual if I ran into problems. I agreed. For four months, I begged to drive every errand. He compared me to a teenager begging for the car. Next came solo driving. On days off, I’d ask for the car for errands, but he’d have to back it out of the garage so I wouldn’t take the mirror off. Soon, he taught me to maneuver it out, but I couldn’t do it as gracefully as he in two steps. Sometimes, I’d be on the grass for the correct angle to exit our narrow driveway gate. My next phase really annoyed him: asking to borrow his beloved Boxster when he traveled. This may have lit a fire under Pat. He began to regularly check sites for automatic Boxsters. On my birthday, I pulled Pat out of his office in the middle of the day to test drive a brand-new Boxster 718. I loved the commercials, and it frequently popped up on my Facebook feed. I considered it a sign that I must have one. I immediately noticed the turbo four didn’t have the same rumble as the flat six, and the trunk was too small for golf clubs. It also scared me. As I drove around Plano for 30

minutes, all I could think was, “Please . . . nobody hit me.” I drove the tour in Pat’s car with my neighbor (who can’t drive a manual) and had a blast. I killed the engine at a stop once, but I hit 104 mph in the sweep position without scaring her. Proud that I kept up with my group, I KNEW I needed my own car. Feeling more comfortable in a six-speed, I wondered if I’d miss out on part of the fun with an automatic. I asked Pat to include manual vehicles in his search. Last June on a Friday night, he handed me his iPad to view 32 photos of a blue 2011 Boxster. Blue?? I did not want blue. I didn’t want black, red, grey, white, or silver either.

I had my heart set on orange or yellow, but most of them came with black interiors. No menopausal woman needs a black interior in Texas heat. I thumbed through the pictures, loving the sand interior, wheels, and brown soft-top. The total package seemed to work, and this car resided in Texas. One problem: this Boxster was a base model, not an S. Pat called the dealer on Saturday, drove five hours to see it Monday, and by midweek, it was mine. While I wasn’t patient enough to wait for a Boxster S, I do enjoy saying, “I have the sexy one -- he has the fast one.”

The Equipe Rapide team set up a long, fast, and technical course. The setup crew did a very nice job marking and cleaning off the driving surface before and between run groups. Quickest in the Porsche performance index was Steve Farnham (Hill Country Region) in the Speed Yellow Cayman GT4, came all the way from Georgetown, TX, for this event with his wife Sherry. Second and third quick index were Mark and Sigrid Schnoerr in the family 914. Scott Wolthuis in his 1975 911S and Carey Spreen in his 1987 924S were very close this time. Ed Mayo was putting down a terrific first run when his 914 decided it was time for a new wiring harness and shut down right before the finish line. Julia did not get to drive, although Mark and Sigrid offered up their 914 to keep them in the hunt. Ed’s car was flatbedded home. At least Ed knows a great mechanic and shop to do the repair!

Mavs & Mochas: Stonebriar Community Church By Debi Kruder

photos by Jim Hirsch, Bill Kruder, Peter Wen

This month, Mavs & Mochas met under clear blue skies in Frisco, TX at Stonebriar Community Church, where the “Big Kids” brought out nearly 120 of their cool Porsches. To make the morning even more fun, our very own Mav PCA member Ajai Cadambi made a special appearance with his new red Ford GT Heritage Edition, which was eye candy for both the young and old. Setting the tone for what was about to take place inside, the third annual Stonebriar Grand Prix was about to begin! If you have not attended this car event, it’s one of our favorites of the season, with the cars outside averaging 170 inches in length, and the rigs inside at a maximum of seven inches. Nearly 160 pinewood derby cars took the track, and the race for speed began, with each car racing in four heats (one on each track) and computer-

monitored software and timer calculating the fastest of their four times. More than 300 people cheered on the races, enjoying Steel City Pops and delicious sandwiches and burgers from The Eggcellent Café food truck. Thanks to Stonebriar for the complimentary Hope Coffee, and to Park Place Porsche for the plentiful Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Back outside, the fun continued as we featured nearly a dozen Cayennes celebrating their 15th anniversary. Park Place Porsche showcased a new 2018 model, and what a surprise when Steve Bukoski, president of the Lone Star Region, pulled in to sport his Cayenne too! With cold bottles of water, Hope Coffee, cold popsicles, and 275 rigs both big and small, it truly was a morning of driving friendships with our neighbors around the Metroplex and beyond!

Here, There, and Everywhere: The Revolver Tour By Brant Worrell, Tours Co-Chair

If you like beer and Porsches, then the fourth Maverick Tour of 2018 was for you! Heck, even if you don’t like beer, this tour was for you! The “Here, There and Everywhere” Revolver Tour took place on Saturday, June 23, and ended at Revolver Brewing in Granbury. This particular tour had something for everybody: hills, valleys, turns, twists, long straightaways, country driving, city driving, great weather, good music, good food, and did I mention really good beer? The day started in Weatherford with 86 cars -- yes, I said 86 Porsches – on a June tour along with 156 occupants! The tour wound its way through the towns of Dennis, Allison, Morgan Hill, and Paluxy, to name a few, before arriving in Granbury. In between the beginning and end, we covered 87.4 miles, for a total of 7,516 miles driven by those 86 lucky Porschephiles. Helping herd all of us were nine excellent group leader drivers, who included Derrick Tate, Brant Worrell (me),

photos by Bill Orr

Tom Gomer, Sam Bryant, Scott Garwood, Jay Lynch, Mark Pitarresi (Tours Co-Chair), Karl Poulsen, and Ed Martelle. Thank you all for your help safely guiding everyone to the end and without any tickets! A big thanks to Karen Poulsen for helping us get everyone signed in! Once drivers and occupants arrived at Revolver Brewing, they were treated to their own private parking area away from the white gravel of the standard parking lot, and things only got better from there! A $10 admission got you a logo pint glass, beer tastings (for those over 21, of course), live music, and a tour given by one of Revolver Brewing’s genius (their words not mine) brewers. The food was provided by Taco Guy. Good things were said about their awesome street tacos, chimichangas, and the like. If you were in the mood for German food, after a beer, that could be had down the road at Ketzler’s Schnitzel Haus and Biergarten. Overall, the fourth Maverick Tour of 2018 brought out a lot of Porsches and a lot of smiles on those who participated. Some tour veterans even went so far as to say this was their favorite tour ever, with the great mix of roads and our fun destination.

The next Maverick Tour is Sunday, September 23, and will end at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, TX. It is our annual charity drive, so stay tuned for more details to follow soon. Mark and I hope to see you all there in September to support a great cause!

Drivers’ Education at COTA: 2018 HPDE By By Wade Ledbetter

photos by Andrew Barber

As Porsche owners, PCA gives us the unique opportunity through the High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) program to take our cars out to a track and drive them how they were meant to be driven. We’re blessed with a number of great tracks within a day’s drive of the Maverick Region. Our own “home” track at MotorSport Ranch (MSR) in Cresson is an excellent place to develop and hone your skills. The crown jewel of road course tracks in the area, however, is undoubtedly Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, TX. I have driven HPDE events with PCA for a little over a year, all of them at MSR Cresson. This was my first opportunity to take my car and skills to COTA. I had heard the track was very fast. What I did not understand before driving it, was how deceivingly fast it is. With a wide path and huge run-off areas designed for Formula 1 speeds, the perception of speed is much different than what we see at all the other tracks in the area. It took a bit of adjustment to get the feel for the cornering speeds on such a different track.

One of the great advantages of HPDE events, and PCA in general, is the ability to socialize with other PCA members around a common interest: the love for great cars and driving enjoyment.

It’s a natural bond, regardless of background or career path. Prior to this event, I posted on our Maverick Facebook page that I was looking for someone to take my track tires down to COTA. One of our fellow members, Arthur Greenstein, was making his first trip ever to an HPDE event and offered to help me out. That led to a great opportunity to socialize and share experiences over the course of the weekend, and we’ve talked several times since. He’s now hooked on HPDE just like me!

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor By Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

The names and places have been changed to protect the innocent, and others. I was talking to my, um, “brother” the other day about teaching his eldest to drive. To my surprise, she wants to learn to drive a manual. What a novelty. These days it seems like we should be excited that kids want to learn to drive at all. But we live in Texas and God willing, we’ll be driving long after it’s fashionable. Like bluebonnets and Ruby Red grapefruit. I know, I like them too. After we discussed the finer points of hiring a driving school rather than keep all that joy to ourselves, it reminded me of the first time I taught someone to drive. This story does not end well, so if you’re squeamish, look away now. It all started one fateful afternoon when my wife came home and told me one of her team members asked if I would teach her daughter to drive. You know, because I was a car guy. I reluctantly agreed, and the lessons began. We started in the high school parking lot with cones and the usual finger pointing and deep breathing. We progressed past parking and reversing and I found

myself nowhere to go but the open road. I laugh now when I see a young person drive through a red light with a wide-eyed, open-mouthed parent at their right. At the time, not so much. But we managed to arrive home after each lesson more or less intact, and eventually I pronounced her ready for her driving test. And that was that. She was soon a licensed driver. But you know that wasn’t how it ended, don’t you? Fast forward maybe three weeks and we were sitting in church at a wedding with her mother, when she got a phone call, stood up and left. Huh, must’ve been important. Understatement. Her daughter was coming home from her first solo drive out of town, and decided to text her mother that she was home. While she was still driving. In her neighborhood. What she had forgotten was that the road in front of her house curved. She hit her neighbors mailbox and rolled the car. Right in front of her house. I helped her father right the mailbox. Good times. So it makes me wonder if the kids have gottenx it right. Either that or they could put their phones down and drive. Good luck little brother - Enjoy the Drive!
