Prez Says by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President That’s amazing! Another event has come and gone – it was well organized, well executed, and the participants enjoyed every minute of it. Which event am I talking about? All of them! Every month, Slipstream magically appears in your mailbox. How does that happen? Usually 5-10 people write articles. 2-3 people put together the layout. 1 or 2 people scan in the photos that 3-4 others take. Then it gets carried to the printer and back several times. Then someone has to print the labels. And separate them. And organize the mailbags. Labeling and bagging take another 2-3 people. Then someone carries them all to the post office, taking off from work or family to do so. Events seem to just happen. Slipstream seems to just happen. How do these things happen? The answer, of course, is volunteers. I know each of you knows this, but how often do we really think about it? Well, now is a good time to think about it! At Founders Day, I had two people come up and volunteer to help with Maverick Region events. And at the Happy Hour before that, another kind soul volunteered his time to the Region. These are great examples of how the region should (and does) work.

But the time has come to replace even more of the positions and appointments with some new blood. So we need some more volunteers. The current openings include: Advertising Chair, Raffle and Door Prize Chair, Tech Session Chair, Slipstream Distribution Coordinator, and possibly a few more. If you feel you might have some time you could give back to the club, please let me know! If you think you don’t have the time – you aren’t alone. Many of our volunteers have wives, husbands, kids, dogs, work, projects, hobbies, and friends outside the club. As a matter of fact, we all do! And if you think you don’t have the skills – you aren’t alone! Nobody volunteering instantly knew how to do the position they volunteered for. It is on-the-job training at its finest. How much time do these jobs take? Honestly, it varies. Some just require a little effort a few times a year, others are as often as once per month or more. Call or email and discuss with me to determine if any of the time requirements are more than you have available. The other members who also enjoy the events will thank you, I will thank you, and most of all, you will feel great about helping another event or issue of Slipstream come to fruition. We have a big year ahead of us and need lots of help; so come on out, and join the fun!

Pam’s Page by Pam Abdalla, Editor About a year and a half ago Wendy Shoffit needed a break. She had been the Editor of Slipstream for two years and was looking for someone to take over for awhile. Well, let’s be honest, she was simply looking for someone to take over. I was recently laid off of my job, and not looking for another one at the time due to being pregnant, so I volunteered. Since then I’ve learned quite alot about Porsche Club, Maverick Region, and most of all, the beauty of teamwork. You see, even though I ‘took over’ as editor, Wendy never really let go. She has been my lifeline in this whole learning curve as Slipstream editor. Hours of her time were spent advising me on content; helping me collect information; pestering folks for articles, ads, and photos; proofreading copy; and otherwise helping keep the whole process running smoothly. She did all this without neglecting her additional duties as Communication Chair and “first lady” of Maverick Region. Throughout the year I also have spent hours and hours putting the issues together each month. It is quite a task.

It cannot be done without teamwork, and I was so lucky to have so many people on my team. Besides Wendy, there is Kevin Hardison, who spent many late-night hours putting the final - professional - touches on my finished draft; and Teri Davis, who’s creative event ads gave the newsletter a polished appeal as well as saved me countless hours. Others who contributed each month, such as Tinker Edwards, Lanean Hughes, Andy Mears, Joel Nannis, and James Shoffit, as well as the “behind the scenes” folks who sorted, addressed, and mailed the issues, and all those who contribute articles and photographs deserve a world of thanks for all their time and effort. For 2002, Wendy will once again take over as Editor. The process has been streamlined a bit in order to run more smoothly and efficiently, but teamwork will continue to be the most essential ingredient to getting each issue completed. Wendy will have her hands full, but she will also have a talent pool of people who are excellent at their jobs as helpers. Next time you see her, say thanks for all her efforts. I know I will.

Happy Holidays!

Maverick Minutes by Andy Mears, Maverick Region Secretary The November Board Meeting got started at 7:01 with a full house of MRPCA members of all ages.

Mimi Spreen reported that the Founders Day schedule is all set and they are expecting a big turnout. Also, complimentary pictures will be taken at the event.

First up on the agenda was the report from the 2002 scheduling committee given by Teri Davis. With the exception of the 2-day driving school expected sometime in the spring, all other planned activities have been set. The dates and the events for the 2002 schedule will be published on the Maverick Region web site calendar, so check the website regularly for the most current information. If you don’t have access to the web and would like a current copy of what is published on the web please contact any board member and we will fax or mail a copy to you.

On a related note, John and Suzanne Cochran are moving away from MR and will not be able to fulfill the duties of VP. As a result, the 2002 nomination committee proposed Eric Erz as a write-in candidate for V.P. All voting for the 2002 ballot will be concluded at the Founder’s Day dinner.

Next, Lanean Hughes reported on the success of the MR Charity Autocross. There were over 60 vehicles in attendance. The proceeds will be donated to the Hope Shelter and Pythian Home. Lanean also reported on the October Club Race and, based on this year’s success, Maverick Region has plans in the works for a 2002 Club Race. Lanean and MR extended a big thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers, and workers who helped make this event the success that it was.

Maverick Region PCA Board Meetings are held once a month.

James Shoffit made a proposal for MR to purchase an additional set of timing lights for use at club driving events. A motion was passed to purchase the additional equipment and we hope to see it in action by the first driving event in 2002. The additional timing units would provide more flexibility in AX course design and will work with our existing equipment. 6

The meeting was brought to a close at 9:05. The December meeting will be on the 6th at the Shoffit's house in Irving. A special dinner will be served and RSVP’s are requested to wendy@shoffit.com by the 3rd. All members are welcome.

The meetings are open to all PCA members and your suggestions and opinions are welcome. And there’s free food!

Run Whatcha Brung Charity Autocross by Lanean Hughes This year’s Charity Autocross was held at Standridge Stadium on Saturday, October 27th. It was beautiful sunny day and those who attended saw a fabulous mix of cars from an Formula Atlantic, a Cobra, an MG, a Legends car, an Austin Healey, a very cute Bug-eye Sprite, 20+ 914’s, other Porsche designs, a few Corvettes, and even a truck with a camper. You name it, we had it.

Many thanks to those who participated and those who helped set it up, including the Shoffits and Cody Sears. Cody and James set up the course at 1:00 AM, yes, 1:00 A.M. Thanks also to the Mid US Ramble folks (see article on page 10) for participating. With all the help and participation, we were able to give $1,432 of charity money collected to the Hope Shelter and Pythian Home. See you next year!

Christy Sears driving her electric/gas hybrid Prius in her first ever autocross.

Carey Spreen kept the “Tow Vehicle” class tradition going.

2001 Mid US 914 Ramble by Charlie Davis The Mid US 914 Ramble (or MUSR) was born in 1999. It was the creation of Alan Barrilleaux from Austin. Alan and I jointly started the 914 SIG to have access to the PCA liability policy for the events we anticipated. Rich and Diane Johnson, who had organized a couple of similar 914 events (organized under the “914 Renegade Club” banner) were brought in to advise. Rich is the genius behind the sponsorship for the Rambles. The name "Ramble" was coined by John Dunkle (master of the Rennlist) and used with his blessings. It was abnormally busy because festivities started a little early this year. Normally, things start on Thursday night, but on Wednesday night a small group met at Joe T. Garcias Mexican restaurant to pull off a surprise for one of our favorite couples. Lawrence Bonkoski is a Warrant Officer in the Army and has been stationed in Egypt for the past 9 months. He came halfway around the world to attend the Ramble (and see his girlfriend). Meanwhile, that girlfriend, Pam Schneider, was in the dark about his plans, but had been tempted down from Des Moines to attend the event in hopes of finding a set of headers for Lawrence's latest project. With names like Lawrence Bonkoski and Pamela Schneider, is it any wonder that we avoid using them? It's a long story, but everybody calls them "RustBoy" and "ToolWench". These are terms of endearment, in case that is not obvious. So, RustBoy, Charlie Davis, Dave Darling, Joe Yoder, Clay Perrine, Rich Johnson and a few others were in cahoots keeping the truth from Pam, er, the ToolWench. RustBoy flew from Egypt to North Carolina, pulled his car out of storage, drove down to Raleigh, picked up Joe (who flew in from Dallas) and then drove to Dallas. RustBoy got in early and Wes Hildreth helped him work out a few things on his car so he wouldn’t be distracted later when Pam flew in. After nine months in storage, the carburetors needed adjustments and RustBoy had never adjusted the valves (quite a difficult job on a 914/6 for those of you uninformed Boxster guys. Heck, most of you have never even SEEN your engines, much less worked on them). RustBoy now knows how to do both of these. (You Boxster guys need to join the new Boxster SIG and start having fun like us teeners do. Contact Lorne Blackman at lorne.blackman@verizon.net. He might even show you what your engines look like.) When ToolWench arrived at Joe T’s, she found Charlie and Teri Davis, Clay and Betty Perrine, and Dave Darling waiting. Another introduction is necessary here. Dave Darling is the 914 guru who works for Pelican Parts

The “surprise” dinner at Joe T Garcias. as their problem solver on the Rennlist. He also works for NASA in his spare time. He lives in Silicon Valley and is the only 914 guy in recent memory to beat Ed Mayo for overall in the Parade Tech Quiz. Dave is known as "Damp" Dave Darling (or DD). If you have to ask why the "Damp" preface, you’ve never driven a 914 in the rain with the top stowed. Meanwhile, RustBoy was inbound from Joe's house in East Dallas. Joe gave RustBoy directions to get to Ft. Worth and I handled the route instructions from Loop 820 to Joe T's. Must have been Joe's part, because RustBoy was lost, plus the batteries on his cell phone were dead and no one could find him. He was in the wrong part of town and no one he asked knew how to get to Joe T's (heathens!). Several margaritas later, people were getting worried, but hunger prevailed and just as dinner was served, in stumbled RustBoy, who crept up behind ToolWench and grabbed her in a bear hug. To say it was a happy reunion would be an understatement. The rest of the event went more normally. Thursday’s arrivals moseyed out past TMS and up the road to Ponder, TX for a load of big T-bone steaks and baked potatoes, done the way only Ranchman's can. Friday was time to sign in and get T-shirts and caps and goodie bags, then sit around and swap stories. After lunch, we spent several hours in the classroom, studying 914 stuff. We had Jon Lowe, the PCA 914 Tech guru in for a couple of sessions and DD did one too. Then we had a big panel discussion about autocrossing. These sessions were very well attended and everyone learned a lot. Afterwards, we had a tour/rally to dinner. Didn't

A colorful ‘bouquet’ of 914’s in front of the hotel. 10

loose a single car. We ended at Lauderdale's on Eagle Mountain Lake for fajitas. Happy hour was still going and we got happy(er). Saturday was quite busy too. We got up early and unloaded our parts (junk?) and cleaned our cars. The cars were displayed in the reserved parking lot just west of the hotel. There were over 40 of them! The Swap Meet was in an adjacent patio area. After the formal pictures, we boogied over to Standridge for the Autocross. Cody Sears and James Shoffit had been up until 2 am setting up the course and marking the pylon locations! The course was a good one. Our Friday seminar on Autocrossing had encouraged several first timers to enter. Half of the entrants in our "Run Watcha Brung" Charity Autocross were MUSR 3 participants, most in their teeners. Everyone loved the AX, in spite of the high $25 fee and only getting 4 runs. Special thanks to the Shoffits, who didn't run, just worked all afternoon so that the event would be a success. It was! Even in spite of a 5:30 PM deadline, having 62 entrants (the biggest "Run Watcha Brung" event in YEARS!), and an adventurous Corvette, who tested the mettle (metal?) of a pole, we all got through early and headed back to the hotel.

(just barely!), but he was so tired, Jan Mayo spanked him at the AX. Then, the banquet and trophies for all the winners, plus over $7500 in "door" prizes! The 3 big ones were entered in a silent auction and the proceeds (over $2,700!) were donated to a couple of NYC charities. As if that wasn't enough, we continued on Sunday morning. Clay Perrine continued DD's electrical seminar and then Mark Wellborn (a Dupont tech expert) covered about 6-months stuff about paint in an hour. Whew! He was good! Did I mention that the weather was fabulous all week? Did I forget to mention that the hotel (the Marriott Solana) was superb? How about the good food? Some people even liked the trophies I made(that were laser engraved by Karen Erz).

Prior to the meal, most people took DD's Tech Quiz. It was simpler this year, but still challenging. Rumor has it that Ed Mayo had been up all night studying. I guess it worked. He beat Jon Lowe for 1st place

This year's MUSR was a huge success. The numbers from this event are impressive: 86 entrants from all around the country (and Egypt!), 45 cars (and contrary to persistent rumor, all of them ran), $7500 in door prizes (everyone got something), and $3,400 donated to four charities. It was put together by a small group of people: Rich and Diane Johnson, Teri Davis, Cody Sears, Dave Darling, Troy Stansbury, Don Doumecq, Mike Shannon, Jon Lowe, Richard Fisher, Clay and Betty Perrine, and Alan Barrilleaux. I helped out a little. Thanks to everyone who helped and to the great sponsors!

A lot of hard work went into preparing the cars for the show.

Judging the best car from each category was tough.

Maverick’s First TMS Club Race A Huge Success By Wendy Shoffit, Linda Bambina, and Lanean Hughes Texas Motor Speedway was "too fast" for CART to race, but not for PCA Porsches! The Maverick Region Club Race/Drivers' Education event on October 12-14 attracted enthusiastic drivers from 14 states on a nearly perfect weather weekend outside of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. We had 110 cars (combined Club Race & DE drivers) and at times over 100 spectators. We fed a total of 270 people at the Awards Dinner that Saturday evening. Autobahn Motorcars of Fort Worth provided a beautiful Red 2002 Boxster as a Pace Car, and their customers enjoyed a 20-minute set with instructors driving their cars on the NASCAR Oval and Road Course. Many thanks go to the tireless workers, and the strong participation of our sponsors. Each day we offered laps around the course at lunchtime for

donations to charity. The Charity Lap on Sunday came "full circle" on the oval and collected $1,100. The money will be evenly split between our own club charity, The Hope Shelter, and the Fireman's Fund of New York, at the suggestion of Brian Barr, a former Maverick member and current Club Racer. On Friday night, the CR National Crew and some Maverick members enjoyed dinner at the Speedway Club and were dazzled with a fabulous Texas-sized "lightning show!" For the very first PCA Club Race at the TMS venue, we deemed it a huge success. The drivers were thrilled with the exciting track and had a great time. There were lots of promises to be back in 2002, when Maverick Region will again be hosting another event at TMS on Memorial Day weekend. Mark your calendars now!

The “full circle” charity lap was enjoyed by all, even if we weren’t allowed up on the high banks.

Club Race By Dee Lersch Since I've never considered cars running around an oval to be a sport, the Club Race was my first event at a national track. Texas Motor Speedway's size was impressive, much larger than I expected, and I really appreciated the variations in both terrain and attitude it afforded our drivers. (Judging from the number of professional drivers and rigs that showed up to race, so did the racers!) The turns were banked 24 degrees and the straights were at 5 degrees. I was both surprised and impressed at the number of out-of-state, out-of-region, race teams that drove in for the event. Fourteen states in total were represented, including Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, California, Massachusetts, and of course Texas. Maverick PCA successfully staged a professional quality Club Race and I was delighted to have been there.

Another former Maverick, Chester Bailey made the trip from Wichita, Kansas.

The Club Race: View From The “Tower” By Tom Snodgrass As the Steward’s Assistant, preparation consisted of attending a few pre-race meetings to make sure I knew who was in charge in each area, and generally how the weekend was being organized. Having worked with Alan Friedman, the race steward before, I had a pretty good idea of what his expectations were this time. The main task of the Steward’s Assistant is to write down all radio transmissions from the corner worker stations to race control. The corner workers call in things like cars spinning, 2 wheels off, or 4 wheels off, contact between cars, and any smells, sounds, or parts loose or missing on the car. It is amazing what these guys can diagnose as a car blasts by them at 100 mph! They also call in when there are foreign objects lying on the track that the racers wouldn't want to run over. This included cones, car numbers, and oil. The reason all this is written down is to have a record of what went on in case there is a dispute later. The "tower" at TMS is really the lower level suite right above the start-finish line. It is a fabulous viewpoint of the entire track and from there, you can see all the action. The majority of the action occurred at the chicane, which is situated just before the entry to NASCAR corner 1 and the steep banking. The goal of the chicane was to slow the cars down. It worked, but it caused several problems for racers throughout the weekend. The other place for

Jan Mayo calling car numbers to Alan Bambina for ‘Scoring’.

excitement was at the end of NASCAR corner 1. The cars have to slow down for a 180 degree turn onto the infield part of the track. Racers liked to pass at that point and pushed the limits of their cars. Some went over those limits and ended up off the track. Timing and scoring were also in the tower. Those in charge kept Alan Friedman up to date on where we were in the race and who was winning. They were busy throughout the weekend timing the practice sessions and qualifying so the racers would know how fast they were and grid would know how to place the cars. Announcements were also broadcast from the tower. Bob Glowacki and Linda Bambina shared the duties of calling racers to grid, thanking our sponsors, and reminding everybody of the schedule. When not in the tower, other Steward’s Assistant duties included helping find particular racers the Steward wanted to talk to, and making sure changes he wanted made were communicated to the right person to make them happen. This is where going to the pre-race meetings paid off! All in all, it was a fun weekend. The racing was fast, the food was very good, it only rained at night, and the camaraderie was what really made it a memorable event.

Getting ready for the Charity Lap.

Fashion Alert: Wearing White In The Fall Is A Good Thing By Bill Kasdorf I think I had a beer in my hand, and probably one already down when Joe McGlohen approached me during my first Maverick Happy Hour. He sensed my weakness. Here's a brand new Maverick, trying to connect with this new group of strangers. He could strike quickly. Me, a corner worker? Naw, I wanna be a race car driver, like Michael, or Hurley, or Nigel. No one dreams of becoming a corner worker! "How much time, what's involved, and when?" I asked, trying to find a reason to not get caught up in this. "OK, yeah, put me down, I'll do it. (Well, some day maybe). It was like anything else, agree face-to-face then get your schedule really full. It's worked for years on other stuff, like dentist appointments. As is typical with Joe, he didn't forget. He bribed my wife, Penny, and I with his (now) famous barbeque in exchange for attending a Flag and Communication Class. He had apparently worked similar coercion with others because he had at least a dozen in attendance for his training. OK, we're trained. We still have time to manage this commitment. Remember, I wanna be like Michael. Volunteers? Yeah, Wendy put us down. Club Race? Yeah, we're "trained". White clothing? It's October - in Dallas! There's nothing out there, this is fashion-land. Everything white in Dallas is destroyed on Labor Day. You'll accept light colors? OK Yeah, put us down for the Club Race. 7am on a Saturday? I must admit I got a kick out of telling friends and coworkers about "working" a car race. Most had no idea this was available and seemed intrigued by the idea. Being my first time, I really couldn't explain what I was going to do, so I made some of it up to sound even more important and exciting.

close and personal, is really great. I have a much better understanding of the things my instructor, Dan Germain, tried to tell me at the last DE. "See the corner station?", he'd ask every time. "Yeah, so what? I'm looking for my apex, and turn out, and all cones in general," I thought. Now I understand why I need to add them to my list of things to do. They (we!) are out there to add a huge level of safety to this driving thing. Not only do you get to see examples of a dozen different driving styles, you actually start critiquing the way each took "your corner." When the fastest and best drivers were on the track it was the greatest seat in the house. You could pretty much just tape the Blue Passing flag to the protection barrier in front of us, because they were all over each other, passing in places that I didn't think possible, and all right in front of me. It was all very exciting and educational, and it also gave me an entirely new perspective of why we joined a group like the Mavericks. It really is about the people, the cars are a bonus. These workers took their jobs very seriously. And I was one of them. And when there was a break, walking around the garages got us "thank you's" from the busy drivers. It was a good feeling. Everyone in charge of this event went out of their way to make each of us feel good about helping out. Countless acknowledgements are due, and great food. But for me it was another of life's experiences, great people, great cars, and recognition. I still want to be like Michael, but now I've expanded my interests, again. I truly enjoyed working the event. Joe and Wendy: Sign me up again!

I found a flaw in Joe's training shortly after arriving at corner 6 with my fellow workers. I needed to pack enough clothing and "stuff" for three seasons; hot, cold, and wet. I also don't recall him telling me to bring earplugs and Mechanix Gloves (for helping push cars that came to "visit" our corner). I was sure to bring them Sunday. At 8 in the morning it was windy and cold. But it was really beautiful to be out in the middle of a quiet racetrack watching the sun come up. The cold seemed to vanish when the first cars came out on track, as did the quiet. We rotated duties throughout the day so each could learn all aspects of working the corner. Thanks to Joe and Wendy's recruiting skills we had enough people to have one person available to "float" and secretly watch the cars. Watching cars on SpeedVision is great, but seeing the difference in driving styles, up

Happy Hour At Mondo’s By Jay Easley

The Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain (co-chair), Tinker Edwards (chair) & Ben Witry (co-chair)

Chairperson comment: You have to know Jay to know his sense of humor, come to a happy hour to meet him and “Bridget” and you will understand….enjoy the article and thanks Jay.

The October 25th happy hour at Mondo’s should’ve had an official title. Steel Cage Death Match IX, perhaps. Or, Conflict on Concrete. Whatever the title, it had a very bizarre beginning and thoroughly enjoyable ending. I’m sure you’re all wondering what in the world I am talking about and just as sure that you know I am going to tell you. Bridget and I arrived early for this happy hour since we were just a short drive away on the Tollway. We pulled in at the same time as Dennis Chamberlin, parking between his Boxster and a 993 Twin Turbo. Greetings were exchanged all around and we proceeded inside. On our way in, we passed two gentlemen (a term I use loosely, since Tink said I couldn’t use the first five words I came up with to identify them) who were admiring the row of fine Porsches. As we passed, one turned to the other and commented,“I can’t believe they let a 944 park next to those other ones.”

Mondo’s really prepared a nice spread. There was a fine hors devours table with jerk chicken, a tasty ceviche, and pizza and nice bar area with plenty of seating and standing room. Since I missed the first Mondo’s happy hour last year, I was looking forward to dinner and dessert this time. I was not disappointed in the least with the main course. The Steak Gorgonzola was wonderful though not quite as good as the steak at Stone Trail. Bridget was very happy with her salad which was much too large and had too much salmon to be called a mere salad. Alan Lage, who had the misfortune of having to sit across from me, was very complimentary about the roast horsemeat sandwich though his wife, Debbie, thought it too gamey for her taste. Alas, the evening ended rather early when we were presented with the checks without being asked if we wanted dessert. I guess the antics of James, Mike and I made a bad impression on someone. No matter, there’s always a third time for Mondo’s!

Be sure to join us for our next Happy Hour: December 20th at 6:30 P.M.

at Carraba’s See Page 2 for details.

You can imagine my reaction. I turned and was on the verge of doing something really embarrassing to the MR PCA when Dennis came to the rescue, took my arm, and led me inside, cooing calming words in my ear. Once inside, under the relaxing influence of alcohol, I related my experience to fellow members, Mike Lockas and James Shoffit. As a potential 944 owner, James was beside himself. Vowing to set the record straight, he stormed into the parking lot with Mike and I trailing behind. Our surprise sneak attack worked to perfection. James and Mike placed a hammer-headlock on each one freeing me to give the ultimate payback, the super-wedgie. Thus, honor was restored to the 944 marques. We left the miscreants rolling in the parking lot and returned to the festivities inside.
