Road Ramblings by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President

A

year as region president is coming to an end for me, as it is also for the rest of the executive team, the board, and a year of Slipstream under editor, Matt Platts. I view Slipstream as the heart of the club. I don’t know about you, but I’m just not ready to give up print and hardcopy pictures. I think Matt has done a super job this year taking over for Wendy Shoffit, her past work as editor was definitely a benchmark. I hope you’ve all enjoyed Slipstream this year, and if you’ve got any suggestions for next year, please forward them to Matt (editor@mavpca.org), who has graciously agreed to return next year as our editor. I also want to thank all our executive officers, chair persons, board members, and many other committee members for helping in planning and running the region and its events this year. I hope all of you had as much fun as I did this year! Karen and I recently attended Maverick’s November 8th annual celebration- Founder’s Day, where we had 120 attendees including the PCA Parade National Committee. They were in town for the weekend as part of Parade planning meetings and activities, so we invited them to our banquet at Texas Motor Speedway. As part of Founders Day we present various awards. I’m pleased to announce that Mike Lockas won the Greg Murrell Driving Enthusiast Award, Chuck Machala and Wendy Shoffit as the Time Trial/Autocross Top-Driver (men’s and ladies,

was into VW beetles in a big way. He had two in that time period and hopped them both up with stinger exhausts, custom wheels, shift knobs, etc. I was the helper, and often rode with him anytime he would let me come along. When it was time for me to learn to drive, he was already in the “excess-car” mode that so many of us get into as enthusiasts. He had some old MGs and one late 60s Beetle in addition to a regular driver. I learned to drive on that VW Beetle, and he often let me take it out by myself, even if not completely legal for a learner’s permit-only driver. Boy, were things a lot simpler 30 years ago with cars, especially that bug. If you saw the way I drove, you’d know how glad I am there were fewer cars on the road back then, too. In terms of Porsche cars, 2003 was an incredible year for new car introductions- the GT3, the Cayenne, the Twin-Turbo and C4S Cabriolets, and the Carrera GT. I’m sure the first customer Carrera GTs won’t get into people’s hands until early –mid 2004. I can’t wait to see the first Carrera GT in person. Perhaps one of our area dealers will have an unveiling party? Also a quick note from Maverick Jeff Jones- in reference to last month’s Road Ramblings- he and Alan Lage have been happily using Griot’s detailing and car care products for a couple of years. They work well and they are produced and tested by Griots themselves. Happy Holidays everyone- enjoy the colder weather and see you next year.

...even if not completely legal... respectively) award recipients (based on a points calculation system), and Cody Sears the Driver’s choice AX and TT Top Driver Award. In addition I was pleased to announce Cody as the Richard F. Selcer Award winner. The Selcer Award is given to the Maverick member who the current year President feels has been a significant leader and contributor to the region and its activities. Lanean Hughes also did a wonderful job organizing the evening and our silent auction, which raised $2900 for the Hope Shelter, a Maverick charity. With the end of the year here, I want to remind you about our annual Holiday party on December 13th. Karen and I plan on going and enjoying the hospitality of Jay and Lisa Walker, this year’s gracious hosts. Speaking of December, my driving events are over until February or so and I’ve got to lay out my plans for what to work on during the off-season. This year might be the least, in terms of work on my 911, but I’m toying with a few projects for the Boxster. I’m thinking about some suspension upgrades and Litronic (Xenon) headlamps to name a couple. We’ll see. I’m writing this column on my brother, Gary’s, birthday. I must thank him again for my introduction to cars, and particularly air-cooled ones. You see, Gary graduated high-school in 1967, the VW Beetle heyday. During his last couple of years in high-school, and the summers after both, he 5

Thanks to our incredible clients, our perfection-driven staff, and Porsche, for giving us a reason to celebrate today, and every day.

Curves Ahead by Matt Platts, Editor

T

he fall season is winding down and there have been no shortage of things to do! We had the last of the Autocross and Time Trial events, both of which were a huge success. There have been more tours and our Happy Hours are exploring new places, too. As I write this, I have just returned from the North Texas Hill Country Scenic Drive & Rally. This event was coordinated and run by Teri Davis and Ed Tix. Ed also manned the Rally checkpoints along with Charlie Davis. They had to hurry a bit to keep ahead of the Rally group, but I'm sure they had fun doing it. I participated in the drive/tour aspect along with a few other Maverick members. We did our best to keep up with Teri as she drove her Honda as a Rally sweep car just in case anyone got confused and needed assistance. Since we were touring instead of Rallying, my navigator, Elaine, didn't need to bother with reading directions. Instead, she took several pictures of the group, including a few standing up through the roof. There should be some interesting pictures to go with next month's article about this event!

November was also the month for our annual Maverick Region Founders Day Banquet. The banquet celebrates our region founders' decision to form a local club and become a part of the Porsche Club of America. That group of founders was comprised of mostly American Airlines pilots who owned Porsches and I'm sure that our membership still includes many pilots since American continues to have a huge presence in the DFW area. The Founders Day Banquet is a great venue to recognize those individuals who have been very active in the club throughout the year. We have awards for top drivers at Autocross and Time Trial events, as well as special recognition and memorial awards. You can find many of these award recipients on pages 14 and 15 of this issue, you can expect a complete list of award recipients and more photos in the January Slipstream as well. Now that the year is winding down, the Maverick Christmas Party is right round the corner. Soon after that will be our annual New Member Party, which will be at Texas Motor Speedway again this year. Everyone is welcome at both parties, so I hope to see you all there!

Meeting called to order at 6:58 pm with Keith's 'Round the Room. Dennis - The Happy Hour at Cafe Vienna went well. Several new members attended. Next H/H is on 11/20 at Abbey Grill in Richardson. December's H/H is at Elephant Bar in Addison. Dennis is looking for 2 mentors for new members, one in W. Plano and one in Lake Highlands area.

for Slipstream. They are handling the labeling with bar codes and sending them out for postal delivery. Addresses won't be checked by a human, so we need to check our list annually. Postage still paid post office, but rate will be about half what is was before. Now being mailed out of Dallas not Ft. Worth. Advertising limit can be 75% of magazine per year, but what's considered advertising is anything that solicits money; AX, Founder's Day, etc. We are not near 75%. Bob Knight - We have money. Lanean - Founder's Day has incredible silent auction items. Money from silent auction and charity AX will be used to buy washer and dryer for Hope Shelter. Sunday, December 7th is stocking stuffer day at Lanean's place.

Jan - Parade is going well. National Parade Staff members are here this weekend to do tastings, looking at sites, etc. They will have dinner with us at TMS for Founder's Day.

Motion made at 8:25 to adjourn, seconded and passed.

Joel - Membership list printed to verify voting @ Founder's Day. Seeing some positive responses to mailings. Will continue for a few more months.

Contrary to magazines which start reminding you to renew 13 years before your current subscription expires, PCA only sends out one renewal notice. If you do not pay your dues before (or *slightly* after) your membership expires, you will be dropped from the national roster.

Wendy - AX #7 at TMS had about 55 people. Raised $387 for Hope Shelter, from extra $5.00 registration fee and other donations. Lost about $500.00 on the event. Good Parade AX warmup. Another warmup scheduled for April 18, 2004. Some safety concerns, communication problems, software not right yet. Will work on it to correct the problems. Wendy - Aka Editor - Slipstream has been printed and will go to the mail house tomorrow. Will be in mail by Thursday. Two new advertisers added and will see in Dec issue. Needs info on tours and socials. Needs articles and pictures for several events. Mike Brodigan - trying to collect money owed from slow paying advertisers. No problems coming up with new advertisers, many ready to go and many more waiting in the wings. Andy - Tri-Win is the company that is doing the new mailing 8

Remember to Renew!

That means you'll no longer get Panorama, Slipstream, or first priority into DEs! PCA makes it easy to renew with both mail-in forms and online registration. Besides, it's only $42 per year! If you are thinking of not renewing, please contact one of the board members on page 4 so we can know what we're doing that isn't suiting you. If we don't know that there's a problem, we can't fix the problem. We want you to be happy in the club and are doing our very best to schedule a variety of events for everyone. Help us help you and RENEW!

Happy Hour at Cafe RPM by Dennis Chamberlain

T

his was a repeat of our May event at Café Vienna (now called Café RPM), a small deli in Irving, a block from the Four Seasons. We were fortunate enough to have John Cotter from Salt Lake City, a special guest of Joe McGlohen’s, along with new memHappy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Tinker Edwards, and Mark Gluck bers Mike and Christal Booze (86 911 Carerra), Don Perry (2003 996), and potential new members (it’s a long story) Mark and Diane Gilley (2002 911 Carrera 4S).

While visiting with John Cotter, I learned that the driving events are a long, long ways from Salt Lake City. It made me realize that Mineral Wells and Cresson are not very far from North Dallas after all!

I found out a long time ago that if you stay within earshot of Bryan Henderson or Joe McGlohen, you’re going to learn some things about cars, driving, or the workings of driving events and of the club itself. By hanging around Bryan on this particular evening, I learned some things that, until now, had mystified me. The subject (I’m not making this up) was the Atkins Diet. If you press Bryan on the subject the next time you see him, you’ll find

that he not only understands the science of nutrition better than any physician that I know, but he’s also able to explain the theory behind high protein, low-carb diets better than any nutritionist.

Diane & Mark Gilley Speaking of inconsequential drives, the December 18 happy hour will be at the brand new Elephant Bar in North Dallas, on the northeast corner of Dallas Parkway and Briargrove (take the Briargrove/Trinity Mills exit).

Maverick Swap Meet By David Mock The Maverick Region of the P.C.A. would like to thank Garrett Metal Detectors for hosting the Fall 2003 Porsche swap meet. The accommodations where great and everyone I talked to really enjoyed the museum and history of the Garrett Metal Detector Co. It's a name you see every time you get on an airplane! While the turnout for parts sales was low, turnout for the people’s choice car show contestants were not. There was at least a dozen 911's in all their glory. The winner was a black mid 80s Carrera Turbo . There was also plenty of car talk and all enjoyed under light clouds and a nice breeze. If you missed this swap meet, do not fret. The next swap meet should be on February 28 or March 6 of 2004.

Founders Day 2003 “A Gala of Giving Affair” By Lanean Hughes n Saturday November 8, 2003, 130+ Mavericks, and guests arrived at the Speedway Club for their annual Awards banquet and more. From a fabulous setting above the TMS track, to sequins, and a little extra make-up, it was a special gathering of new members, old members and making new memories!!

O

One of our special guests was Lisa Huffaker, the Hope Shelter administrator and her husband, Mitchell. We certainly appreciated their presence, and the opportunity for members to meet and visit with her. She expressed her thanks and support of our club throughout the past 10 years.

This year’s Silent Auction was designated for the purpose of getting enough funds to purchase a washer/dryer for the Hope Shelter. Candy Miller, a club member, and owner of White House Furniture in Weatherford made it possible for us to purchase a

I cannot express the thanks (seems like such a small word) to YOU the members and YOU the donors/sponsors/supporters for helping us to continue the “Passion for Hope” and help them to continue their efforts in assisting those clients who come to them for a “safe haven.”

washer/dryer at a significant savings, and it will be delivered before Thanksgiving. We far exceeded the goal that was set for this. Due to the outstanding support of our members, and the many donors of our great silent auction items, we made approximately $2,900! What an awesome way for Maverick to end their year’s activities, bidding on everything from Chocolate 911’s to Car Cleaning kits!!

You will see many award winner’s photographs on these pages, but there were also several folks who won award but were not in attendance. Be sure to contact Cody Sears if one of those people is you.

Arkansas Tour By Bob Bianconi Uncle Ted and Aunt Bonnie’s Big Adventure

L

ombard Street in San Francisco is billed as the most crooked street in the US. Well, the Maverick members who participated in October’s Arkansas tour might dispute that claim. But I’m getting ahead of myself...

The weekend of October 24-26 was this year’s big 3-day tour finale with Uncle Ted and Aunt Bonnie presiding. If you have participated on previous tours you may know what I am talking about; for everyone else, you’ll just have to show up to become a member of the tour family.

Following a day of exploring, we arrived at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs around 5PM. Being the anal-retentive sort, I always worry about parking the car. Not to worry on this occasion, though, as Uncle Ted had arranged (somehow) for private parking with a capital “P.” All of those lovely Porsches got their own private garage! The day ended with a great seafood buffet at the Arlington.

By lunchtime in Jasper (C-5 on your map), we all took a welldeserved break. It was starting to get really chilly as we started back towards Hot Springs. You wouldn’t know it though as some of the cabs/Boxsters were still driving top down. Despite the chilly weather, we

Friday morning started bright and early at Einstein Bagels in Plano. Seventeen or so cars began the weekend journey heading north into the Kiamichi Mountains and then on into Oklahoma’s Quachita National Forest. Friday was perfect weather-wise and all the cabs and Boxsters took advantage of it. Joann and I were at the back of the pack watching and photographing the line of cars taking the curves ahead of us. What a great sight that was!

straight-aways but lots and lots of twisities and long sweeping curves to challenge everyone. This was our first trip to Arkansas and I have to tell you that the scenery, mountains, and roads were just awesome. I think everyone’s favorite was Route 123 near Mt. Judea. This road rivals Lombard Street in its switchbacks and elevation. This is a must do if you are touring Arkansas.

Saturday it was up bright and early again (one of these days I’m going to really ‘fix’ his alarm clock) to head north, back into the Quachita Mountain range and then into the Ozark National Forrest. Not too many long

Talimena Scenic Drive - one of the best roads within a few driving hours of the metroplex voted to take 123 back towards Hot Springs. This time we went up the hills and switchbacks – a completely different experience than coming down towards Jasper. Saturday night was dinner Italian-style and then off for some shut-eye. Sunday saw us – you guessed it – up early! But to make up for it, Uncle Ted and Aunt Bonnie saw to it that we ate breakfast at the Queen Winelmia Lodge located on a mountaintop. Great food and an opportunity to take some more photos with the many valleys down below as a backdrop. This place would sure make a great base if you ever plan to visit and tour the Oklahoma/Arkansas national forests.

So what was the best part of the trip? The roads? The scenery? No, it was Rich and Robin and Buddy and Rene and Jim and Margie and Brad and Susie and Steve and Debbie and Joey, Charlotte, Douglas, Mimi and Bill and, well, you get the idea. All new friends. And then, of course, there’s Uncle Ted and Aunt Bonnie…

Don’t let the beauty distract you, there are a few sharp corners that will sneak up on you! 18

Time Trial #6 By Chuck Machala

H

aving a Saturday time trial is always a good excuse to take off Friday afternoon, pack up the stuff and head out to Mineral Wells. This is particularly true in October when the weather’s nice, as it was October 17. The drive out was uneventful and after changing to the track tires at MineralRing it was just about time for dinner with the gang. The usual Baris Friday evening was attended by Noby, Mike, Rick my brother Tim and myself. It’s always great to get together and talk cars and driving with PCA folks, particularly these nuts.

As usual, tech inspection and driver meeting went off without a hitch. Mark, Cody, Wendy, Lisa, James and all the others who make TT and AX work have my gratitude. Bill and I will need everyone’s help next year. Several new people were Saturday dawned another perfect day and we got to the out driving a variety of cars. Maverick Rally - From The Car’s Point Of View By Froderick (Frody) Perrine - Rally Car Extraordinaire!

I

can always tell when we are going somewhere special because I get a bath, my windows get cleaned, AND my carpet gets vacuumed! My humans took me on the “Ghastly Ghosts Rallye” on October 25th and it was a blast! Ten other cars also showed up to run an interesting and challenging Rally in and around Fort Worth. The cars were not all Porsches either! I noticed a cute little red Mercedes, not to mention a BMW, a Volkswagen Jetta, a 911, a 928 and a bevy of beautiful Boxsters! Like I have heard the humans say before, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people” and all of those cars brought some great people!

...My gas tank has butterflies in it just thinking about getting to see all of my “relatives”... I overheard the humans say the Rally was a warm-up or test run over some of the route that might be used for the Parade Rally next year. Apparently, there is a LOT of planning that goes into Parade (which is sort of a big convention for Porsches and their people) and the Rally is a big part of it. My gas tank has but-

terflies in it just thinking about getting to see all of my “relatives” at Parade. You should make sure your humans take you to Parade next year – I have heard that the humans have a great time there too! The Rally was a good length – about four hours (with a break in the middle) of beautiful scenery around at least a couple of the local lakes (Lake Weatherford and Eagle Mountain Lake). We even drove through the Fort Worth Nature Center where we got to see some buffalo. A beautiful deer ran out in front of us and surprised us all! The route instructions were demanding but not overly so (we didn’t get lost!) and the driving was great fun! I am normally used to autocrossing, so the Rally was a really nice change of pace for me (and for my humans, from what I could hear them saying) and the fall foliage was beautiful. Many, many thanks to all of the human workers: Bob Benson, Teri Davis, Pam and Kim Lackey, John Leto, Jan Mayo, Joe McGlohen, Myra and Jerry Sutton, and Ed Tix the Rally Master for allowing me and my humans to have such a spectacular day on the road! 21

Boxster Blvd - Engine Peek by Bob Bianconi

N

ever Seen Your Boxster Engine, huh? You know it’s there, but you’ve never seen it. It’s your Boxster engine. Probably it’s just too hard to get to, or you don’t understand the instructions in the manual. Well, now’s your chance to learn how to get to your engine and see how dirty it is, and believe me, it’ll be plenty dirty. Follow these photos and you’ll be able to take a peak in just a couple of minutes. But be warned, once you see the dirt, you may be inclined to do a little housekeeping!

6. Undo the twist locks on the engine cover carpet in the same way; lift out (F) 7. For the engine cover, twist the locking ring (G) until free. Watch removing the top, it might be a bit awkward – you don’t want to damage the trunk! (H) 8. See your dirty engine (I) 9. Use the reverse order to button everything up. It might be a little tricky to align the twist locks the first time, but once you have one side in, the others are easy.

1. Open your top a few inches, maybe 4-5” from the windshield frame (A) 2. Locate the 2 retaining cables, one on each side. It’s a ball and socket arrangement. Just pull the cable off the round ball, the easiest one to reach is the lower one (B). Pull hard, it will come loose. 3. The fabric cover is attached along the back wall by 2 clips. Pull down on the plastic edge attached to the fabric. It will come free; do this for the other side of the car too. (C)

5. Next remove the storage bin by twisting the black twist locks - turn (E). Different years have different types of storage. ’97&’98 have a leather bin; 99-on have the storage box (look inside the bin/box); some models have the Bose subwoofer (as shown here). All work the same way. Undo the twist locks and lift out. (Note: if you have the Bose unit, undo the speaker cable first! It’s on the right side –look for the wire and press the sides of the connector.

4. Push the window up towards the top; you can put the fabric over the top to keep it out of the way (D).
