The Inside Track by Rocky Johnson, the Maverick Region President

I

t's been fun! Have there been some challenges -- yes, but overall a lot more positives than negatives. The past two years as president have flown by. I was lucky, the club was in great shape when I came to office and it's in great shape today. The newly elected and reelected officers - James Shoffit, president, Mark Gluck, vice-president, Charlie Davis, secretary and Bob Kuykendall, treasurer, bring a wealth of personal, professional and Maverick experience to the board. I'm confident the Maverick region will continue to be a leader in PCA, both regionally and nationally. As most of you who attend any of our events know, they tend to be well organized, first class and fun, no matter whether social or driving oriented. This is because we are blessed with absolutely great people that serve as the real driving force, many times, behind the scenes. If I tried to say thank you, in writing, to everyone that has contributed to running the club and our events over the past two years, it would take a special edition of Slipstream. In addition to all the folks that have served as chairs,

committee heads and workers, there have been others that have served as informal sounding boards. Thanks to you, as well. One thing is for sure, as I enjoy our events in the future, I will do so with a much greater appreciation for all the hard work required to make things look so easy. When the occasional, small hiccup does occur, it's important to remember that none of the volunteers are purposely trying to inconvenience or upset you. It's funny, one of the most difficult tasks for me, as president, has been writing this monthly article. It has been a good news/bad news proposition. The good news is that nobody tells you what to write about - the bad news is that nobody tells you what to write about! Fortunately,my article is in the front of the magazine. That way, if I put you to sleep, you've got the great stuff in the rest of the magazine with which to recover. As I said at the start, it has been fun. If you have been sitting on the sidelines, you ought to jump in and try to get more active in helping run things. You might find out you really enjoy it.

Maverick Minutes by Jan Mayo

W

e must be getting towards the end of the year, there were no comments about waiting for me to finish or my mouth full of cookies or anything. Rocky just started at the far end of the table with Kevin Hardison. Kevin had a prototype of the photo calendar he's been working on that he will have for sale through the Goodie Store (Christy’s all ears). He's also working on making it possible to have some color covers for Slipstream again (opened up MY ears). So, all you hot-shot photog's out there start thinking of how nice your car would look on a color cover and plan your settings. Tracey Gross has 100 people rsvp'd for Founders Day. Linda Bambina and Charlie will be taking photos. Tracey is quite happy with her "lovely" committee helpers, Lisa Steele, Wendy Shoffit & myself. She notes the team effort it has taken to get everything accomplished. Tracey requested a deposit for On The Border for the food for the Holiday Party at the Campbells. We are catering the party this year so everyone can be a guest. Desserts and toys for Hope children will be welcome. Finally, starting to look ahead past November and December, Tracey has talked with some new members who live near her about hosting the New Member Party in January. Further into 2007 she's looking at a few more wine tasting parties as they were all well attended and asked if we thought another Murder Mystery event would be fun. "Yes", so that's on the list as well as many of the standard events, except Baseball not happening. As Tracey was taking a breath Rocky moved on to Christy Dominick, our new Goodie Store chair. She hasn't had a whole lot of activity with on-line orders but is continuing to work with Treasurer Jeff on getting PayPal set up. That lead to some discussion on the PayPal email notifications and James reported that he has a team of his best people working on it as we speak. Denny Payne has been working with Steve Boyd on getting the web site activity transferred over and says that Steve has been very helpful. He's asking that event chairs proactively tell him of their events and dates and if there are any changes. He can make it all happen but needs to know what and when. The Happy Hour at Speed Zone drew 30 people tho only a few of them drove the cars. Dennis was happy with a few rounds of miniature golf and went on and on about their great pizza. December’s Happy Hour will be at iFratelli's in Irving on MacArthur at 635. Mark Gluck has insurance coverage for the East Texas tour. Jeff says we still have money, while busily writing checks all evening. Teri Davis wants Rallies put on the Calendar Committee's agenda and asked if we wanted to Rally to the New Member Party like we did last year. James says the calendar committee consists of himself and Teri so it looks like her wish will happen. James will also combine Maverick's calendar with other zone happenings. The Truxster is repaired, inspected and is ready for another year. It even idles nicely with no back fires. This year there will be no photo production delays for Founders’ Day as he and Linda will be mailing the photos rather than try to print them right then and there, with an address sheet to ensure we have their most up to date address. He and Teri just returned from the 914 SIG Ramble in Fort Smith, Ark. It was sponsored by Cimarron Region this year and was heavily tour oriented. He wants to suggest the SIG's promote rallying or at least rallying in tour form. 8

Bryan Bell has a Autocross/Time Trial schedule for 2007. He has been asked to bring back the School 104 for a little more experienced drivers but thinks Mineral Wells may be too expensive if only a few show up. He reports that Tom Snodgrass is ready to pass on the School Chair position. There was some discussion about combining the Ladies/Teens school day with the general populace and only having a one day school for everyone. Again, the consensus was that Ladies and Teens deserve their own day and then will be welcome to return the next day for the general school. Rocky wanted to know if anyone knew the 2007 Club Race schedule as he was concerned that many of our instructors might be there and not available. That brought on a flurry of electronic activity as James and Mark, Denny, and others pulled out their blackberries, blueberries and cranberries to see who could locate the information quickest. Undaunted, Bryan continued on with the School 104 and how/who to include, what should be the experience level criteria. Rocky stepped in again with a question on the practice of supplying loaner helmets and the region's culpability if something happened and an injury resulted. He asked about having another release waiver or if the standing one would cover that. Bryan will consult our zone rep and/or legal counsel. A-HA, we have Club Race dates, but I didn't write down who spoke up first. It appears the Club Race schedule will not interfere with Bryan's suggested school dates. While going down the list of dates, Teri interjected the Parade registration dates for everyone to keep in mind and that she will do a reminder for the website. Taking BACK the floor once again, Bryan finished by saying that he will initiate a $5 discount for AX/TT registrations done on-line. Which brought a mutter from Wendy, "Fine, now that your wife is helping with registration, you give an incentive for doing it on-line." "Yup." We've worked our way around to my side of the table now, so as Secretary I report that I will have voting ballots at Founder's Day for the election of officers as well as the bylaws revisions. Wendy has a list ("oh boy, oh boy") of the equipment I will be needing to take over Slipstream (fits of giggles and whoopee's). As you can see she is giddy with delight at passing over the duties of Editorship. She believes everything I need can be found for $550 which is moved, seconded and voting passes. Wendy continues with a report on the Charity Autocross which we believe Autobahn was to have sponsored. Unfortunately with all of our attention diverted with Lanean's illness no one followed up on this. Without their sponsorship income the event was a loss so only the additional gifts would be given to Hope. Bryan Bell will follow up on this. Wendy and a cast of wonderful friends have finished taking care of Lanean's furniture and belongings making another two-truck-load delivery to Hope. Her Porsche files will be sent to the National PCA office. Wendy has her first version Founder's Day program available for additions, corrections and proofing. She needs articles for Slipstream and will revise the ski trip ad to reflect the addition of the "Snow 2000 Helmet" requirement. Michael Wingfield reports that the October DE had 163 drivers thinking that it was the highest attended DE. For the first time in awhile they had to turn away a half-dozen green students.

Joe has a $300 check for the loan of our radios, which per the President's meeting a couple months ago, will not happen any more. Rocky happily announces the last Board Meeting of 2006 will be December 5 and Tracey wants to know if everyone is happy staying at Hackberry. This was arranged by Lanean since she was a member, but the management has been working with Tracey and is willing to continue to let us meet there. Everyone is pleased with this and the meeting starts to come to a close. But first, I humbly ask Charlie, pending final outcome of the vote, if he would be so kind to start the Secretary job with the December meeting since I will be starting the Editor job at that time. He agrees. Then Wendy mentions that the November Slipstream will mail in a few days due to the heroic effort of Kevin Hardison and Ussery Printing. [Rounds of Applause] Then a question was raised about anyone overseeing the accounting practices of our treasurer, not that our treasurer is questionable, but an unfortunate and very expensive action in another organization prompted a question of our practices. In the past there has been a member audit of the years' work, but that apparently hasn't happened in several years. More discussion about the wisdom of a member audit versus an outside firm. Having already put my pen and paper away thinking the meeting was over 3 paragraphs ago, I'm going on memory here thinking that Dennis Chamberlain was going to look into one of his cronies doing this. People have started wandering around at this point and we, as Tracey's lovely committee still have some Founder's Day details to discuss, so I'm calling the meeting officially over.

From The Driver’s Seat by Wendy Shoffit, Slipstream Managing Editor

Y

ou may or may not have heard that this is my last issue as Managing Editor of Slipstream. Jan Mayo has graciously agreed to take over my post. I’ve worked off and on with Slipstream since 1999. James reminded me that the first year we were “co-editors.” That was the only way I would agree to do it. As it turned out, he didn’t do much, but that was okay with me. Once I got into it, I really got into it. Through these 8 years there have been a few other editors, but I’ve stayed on as part of the staff. This next year will be no different. I’ve promised Jan I won’t be going away, so I can help get her transitioned into the position. I’m going to be around in other areas of the club, as well. For one, now that James is president (again), I’ll be helping him a little there. Like it or hate it, I’m not going anywhere. *grin* I’m just going to help differently. Anyway, I realized this past month that in my articles last month about Lanean, I never gave the reason for her passing. This led to some very confused people and I apologize for that. While Lanean had been diagnosed with lung cancer in the latter part of August, her chemotherapy treatments unfortunately caused her to come down with diverticulitis (a severe condition of the intestinal tract). It was the diverticulitis that eventually caused an internal perforation, leading to her death. Day to day her family and friends are getting back to normal, but we’ll always be affected by her. One of the ways many of our lives’ have changed is through our

Trivia Contest December

association with the Hope Shelter. We’ve been working extremely hard to get them ready to move in. Originally, the mandatory move in date was mid-November, but once the state officials realized that their employees would really like to have a Thanksgiving break, they pushed it back to December 1. As of today, they’re almost there! The rooms have been furnished and decorated, the electricity is FINALLY on, and the plumbing is mostly done. Everything else is either contracted out or on its way. The new facility is absoluely fabulous! Next month we should have some awesome pictures of the finished project. You will be amazed when you see it. There will be a dedication ceremony of sorts the first part of the year, but the date still has not been set. Look for it online on the mrpca yahoo groups email list. If you’re not signed up but still want to be invited, send me an email and we’ll make sure you get the date and time information. Don’t put the shelter too far from your thoughts, though, as they will continue to need our support in the future. Missing from this issue is full coverage of Founders’ Day. There was just so much other stuff to cover, we figured we’d wait until next month to do it justice. Besides, then it can be Jan’s job... not mine! *wink* Suffice it to say, we had a great time. The Polynesian dancers put on a great performance, we raised a lot of money for the shelter, and got some wonderful raffle and silent auction prizes. The autocross, time trial, rally, and club race awards were also given with much aplomb. Congratulations to Tracey Gross, this year’s recipient of the Richard Selcer award! From my point of view, you deserve it!

Premier Wine Tasting by Brad Nace and Mia Williams

O

n Saturday, October 21st, 2006, nearly forty Maverick Region members and their guests turned out for a wine tasting at Premier Wines of Plano. Great turnout considering when we first appeared, we were two of six in number. For those of us in this predicament, we became the lucky recipients of a bottomless glass. (There really is something to be said about being the early bird!) The event quickly filled in attendance but that did not stop a few people, like Luke Edson, from appearing late (and actually finding a seat).

Rothschild recovered from the bottom of the World Trade Center. Its price tag approached that of a small car. I assume it is safe to say that we all wanted to sample this wine. For those who might be interested, it was there the last time I checked. In conclusion, we really enjoyed ourselves, the food, the wine, the conversations and the knowledge that the club will continue having social events. Don't miss the next!

Our host, James Winkler, gave a nice presentation of the various wines for the evening, including “Jouillian, a wine not regularly part of their tastings. Approximately 14 or 15 types of wines and champagnes, from white to red to peach, were sampled. That ensured each of us would find a few of our favorites from Bordeaux, Cabernet, Merlot to Zinfandel. Macaroni Grill provided hors d'oeuvres, including pasta, lasagna, capri salad, and accompanied by - you guessed it, vino! Aware that many of our members had attended the memorial service for Lanean Hughes, James Winkler offered a toast to her and a moment of silence recognizing Lanean and her contributions. In ending the evening, our host mentioned one bottle of particular interest. Following September 11, 2001, the store obtained a very old and very rare bottle of Baron Philippe de

Drivers’ Education at MotorSport Ranch by Chuck McCoy, 1983 White 944 had been looking forward to this DE for about 3 months. Working corners at a couple of Maverick Region events earlier this year earned me discount certificates toward a DE and this was it. What a perfect fall weekend it turned out to be.

I

feel it?”Well, I guess I didn't because next time around I came in too hot, started to lose it and after all the instruction I had been given about what to do I made the rookie mistake of trying to save it. Didn't work. Got to visit Joe at Black Flag.

When I got to MSR it was still dark and pretty chilly. While I was changing tires in the dark, Tracy Locke was beside me putting brand new Victoracers on his 944 Turbo. He was in the green group with me. After registration, drivers’ meeting, and novice drivers’ meeting we had time for a final check of our cars before time to report to grid.

To all of you who do DE's, this was probably a boring article and you say “been there , done that”. To those of you that have never done a DE, please try it once. You will be hooked. Our Maverick Region has the best level of instruction and the instructors are awesome. You will learn to drive you car at its limit in a safe, instructional environment. Dan and Mike were absolutely great and everyone I talked to had similar feeling about their instructors.

My instructor, Dan Gage, met me at grid and went over my car. We talked about my previous experience and what we would do during the first set. I was already impressed. I told Dan my goal was to learn the line on this huge 3.1 mile course and demonstrate enough skills and car control to get promoted to the blue group when he felt I was ready. After my first two sessions, Dan took me out with him in his 944 Turbo race prepared car in the red group. That gave me a look at the line I was trying to consistently run at pretty much race speed. WOW, what a ride! Dan was great. He was so positive and patient as I would hit a particular turn right then blow the turn in on the next one. Lunch time and between sets gave us all time to visit and talk about what we were doing right and wrong amongst ourselves. After that, my third session Saturday was working on consistency, looking ahead, and seeing all the corner stations. On my final run Saturday, it was awesome. Dan was yelling “That's it, That's it” and it was so much fun words cannot describe. BRING ON SUNDAY!! Sunday morning was another perfect day at MSR. Because of the time change, we had daylight when the track opened. It is so much fun just visiting with all my autocross and time trial friends and the new friends I made. Tracy was thrilled with his new tires and I could believe it. I waved him by at least a couple times over the weekend and he blew by me like I was sitting still. I was standing outside the classroom waiting for the novice drivers’ meeting when Dan came up to me and said, “Congratulations, you have been promoted to the blue group.” Dan already had a blue student, so I would have a new instructor. He introduced me to Mike Langford. Mike drives a BMW M3 and is another great person and instructor. Tracy was also promoted to blue. Mike and I worked on all the basics the first two sessions. As I got faster and faster there were some areas I was good at but some sections I struggled with. After my two morning runs, Mike took me out in his car to show me the line and braking points in his car. My third session I had three sections of the track I needed to work on while staying consistent everywhere else. I made great improvement on 2 of them but was struggling with the section between stations 6 and 8. Final session of the day. Mission: Conquer section of track between workers stations 6 and 8. Mike and I would talk about it all the way around the course while I would drive the line, at speed, looking ahead and remembering to check workers stations. As we would near it Mike would say “wait, wait, turn in now, stay a car width from the left side, now left parallel to left side. Turn in, brake hard, left turn, gas, gas, gas. Little after half way through the session Mike said “There, that was it. Did you 14

I want to thank our sponsor, Park Place Porsche. Without their support, most of us could not afford to have this fun, and the shirts were awesome, too. Their water hits the spot after 20 min. of track time. The track photographer, Hart Photography had over 80 pictures of me on track and they are outstanding. This is not an advertisement for them but you can look all the proofs online and pick out the pictures of your car. To everyone involved, I want to thank you all. It went so smooth and I understand the challenge without Lanean. I sure missed her running around on the golf cart like we are all so used to seeing. It was a perfect weekend, I had more fun than anybody should be allowed to have and can not wait to do it again. I look forward to seeing everyone next year. I will beat that durn section of track!

Swap Meet at Zims by Denny Payne

S

ince we are now in the off-season, so to speak, for MRPCA driving events, Christy and I decided to check out the Swap Meet at Zim's to see what treasures we might find for our 944 that one day will be our track car. It was a beautiful Saturday morning and when we arrived there was already quite a line of Porsches parked along the street and a steady stream of folks sampling the wares.

There was a great variety of stuff displayed, from wheels, bumpers, and hoods all the way to bins of 911, 914 and 944 parts - some common and some most likely identifiable only by the most ardent trivia buffs! There were several complete vehicles for sale as well. We encountered familiar faces from Autocross and Time Trial and met some new Porsche friends at the same time. The icing on the cake? I finally found the elusive intact header panel that I needed for the 944! After coming up empty-handed from Ebay, Rennlist, and salvage yards, it's gratifying to know that your local swap meet can still deliver the goods! Thanks to Zims for hosting such a great event!

ALMS Finale Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca

his year marks the 50th Anniversary of the legendary Laguna Seca racetrack, and the year couldn't have ended with a better race. There were more fans present than last year and in an effort to help support the development of today's youth, the American Le Mans Series has teamed up with The Salvation Army, the official charity of the Series, to form a national “Grid Kids program. At each of the 10 track venues, the Series hosts 12 - 15 disadvantaged youth from Salvation Army centers at the track, making them VIPs for the day. They get up-close and personal sessions with race teams and drivers, have their photos taken, enjoy lunch and a unique day-in-the-life experience with the drivers.

Randy Probst leads Tommy Drissi into Turn 8 The ALMS race provided proof that the Audi juggernaut is still mowing down the opposition in the American Le Mans Series Prototype (LMP1) class. They are undefeated with 8 class wins this season alone. The R10 TDI has to be the fastest diesel on the planet and also the quietest race car ever. Although sewing up the championship prior to this (including winning Le Mans), they nevertheless came to pursue a win at Laguna Seca.

two in class and Porsche took the manufacturers title. Interesting note to the race is that Luhr closed to McNish in the Audi LMP1 car for a while near the end of the race before spinning at turn 11 going onto the straight. The Porsches are fast despite being smaller in displacement. Third in LMP2 was the Dyson Lola B06/10/AER of James Weaver/Chris Dyson. The Dyson team announced the retirement of Weaver after the race ending his 20 years with the team Bobby Rahal and his 30 years of racing. Weaver had already left the track before the announcement. In GT1, the two Aston-Martin DB9s (now running with larger restrictors) challenging the Pratt-Miller Team of Corvette C6-Rs managed to take 1st and 4th in class. The Corvette's came in 2nd and 3rd which was enough to win the class and drivers' championships for the year. A-M would have had to finish 1-2 to tie the series but a tire problem on the Tomas Enge Aston 007 car put an end to that dream.

In the LMP2 class, the Porsche RS Spyder's of Lucas Luhr/ Romain Dumas and Sascha Maassen/Timo Bernhard finished one18

The series is beginning to draw an interesting mix of Prototypes such as the Zytek 06S, Creation CA06/H-01/Judd, Radical SR9/AER and 2 Lola chassis, the EX257 and the RO5/40 and attracting additional Teams to the mix. Some of these specialty machines are using older Formula 1 power detuned for durability but are still on the cutting edge of reality. The sounds are incredible, but I digress. During qualifying, the Zytek 06S driven by none other than Stefan Johansson (103 Formula 1 starts) qualified on the pole in the car he campaigned in Europe this year and set a new Laguna Seca track record for LMP 1 in the process. The Audi R10 TDI, although only qualifying 4th (behind the LMP2 class Porsche RS Spyder LMP2) had the synthetic blend fuel mileage thing going their way (90 minutes on a tank of fuel) and like the Tortoise and the Hare fable, Allan McNish just kept plugging along to the win. Although the Zytek and the Creation Judd were faster by 0.5 seconds per lap, they could only go about an hour on fuel. Audi finished 1-2 with the Creation-Judd third. After te race, the Audi Team Engineer said they only had enough fuel left in the car at the end for about 1 to 1 1/2 lap.

Rockenfeller in the Alex Job #23 GT3 RSR There was some late race excitement in the GT2 class as the 430 GT Ferrari of Mika Salo passed point's leader Jorg Bergmeisters' Peterson White Lightning Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with ten minutes remaining in the race to take the win. Bergmeister, however, took the Drivers Title and the Manufacturers' title went to Porsche. In the SPEED world Challenge, Randy Pobst took the GT championship in his Porsche 911 Cup car by 0.031 seconds. Local long time racer Lou Gigliotti (Wylie, TX) came in 7th in his C6 Corvette.

In the GT3 Porsche Cup (Dentist, Doctor, Lawyer) event, the race was shortened to about 10 minutes (from 30), or about 5 laps due to mass carnage at every corner brought on by marginal decision making and the Cojones factor. I don't know if there was a winner, but there was a lot of damage to some very nice Porsches. No wonder the ALMS put them into a separate race. Pit Rat Notes: • Bergmeister won the GARRA Daytona Prototype championship AND the ALMS GT2 championship this year making him the first one to win a drivers championship in both series in the same year. • Bobby Rahal and David Letterman (R/L Racing) are going to run a Porsche 997 RSR in next years ALMS series. No word on a driver, but Rahal was certainly walking (trolling?) the pits all weekend. Although Rahal admitted to owning 16 “high end” auto dealerships, he doesn't have a Porsche dealership………..yet. • Most of the drivers do not know who they will be driving for next year. Andy Pilgrim said to call him on Christmas Eve as that is when he usually receives the call to let him know if he is hired or fired. Photo by Bill Stafford

• There were 8 former Formula 1 drivers in the event. That's a lot of expensive sunglasses, not to mention the leather pants entourage. • Will Andretti Green Racing, Letterman Rahal and Fernandez Racing force smaller teams such as Alex Job Racing out of ALMS? Stay tuned. Luhr #7 Porsche Spyder lights up the tires braking at Turn 8

Arkansas Tour with help from Miss Manners By Joe Rybarski

The Maverick Region Arkansas Tour has typically featured a fascinating mix of fabulous roads, great weather, and interesting local sights and activities. Nonetheless, there are always some circumstances which just can't be readily addressed by simply relying on one's own experiences and background. As a service to future enthusiasts who may want to drive the back roads of Arkansas, the following exchanges with noted advice columnist Judith Martin (Miss Manners) may be of benefit.

understand, recognizing that Bill Clinton didn't seem to mind if his “associates” weren't kin, or even from Arkansas.

I

n today's politically correct times, people are encouraged to embrace diversity and endeavor to avoid stereotyping those to whom they may feel superior, especially if this conclusion is arrived at solely by casual observation. That said, it can be difficult not to succumb to certain preconceived notions, especially when it comes to the residents of Arkansas. Amplifying this tendency are serendipitous moments such as when this author was crossing the border from Texas to Arkansas. The first thing he saw was a “Welcome to Arkansas” sign, and ten feet later observed a man burning trash in his front yard. “Yard” being the politically correct term for garbage laden weed fest.

Clara Lewis (View from Queen Wilhelmina Lodge) Dear Miss Manners: On the first leg of our journey, we stopped at a gas station and were approached by local youths who desired to be photographed inside of one of our cars, which happened to be a yellow Turbo with race track mods. Of course “we” agreed since only one car would be lost if the key accidentally turned to start and the car accidentally found its way to a foreign country. In retrospect, I wonder if there is a more proper way to share our Porsche enthusiasm while maintaining a fair level of security.

Gentle Reader:

The group enjoying their time together. Dear Miss Manners:

Don't worry too much. It is widely known that the brakes on the vehicle in question make a Def Leppard concert sound like a Gregorian chant. If you brake it, they (the police) will come. Conversely, that infernal squealing might sound like love makin' in the barnyard to the locals, so it might make for an effective cover, allowing the vehicle to blend right in. But, at 10 miles to the gallon, the car won't get too far anyway and should make a fine parts car when you get it back.

Technically, if you believe in the theory of evolution, we are all cousins (kissin' or otherwise). Miss Manners cannot condone deception and would suggest that you were proper to identify your wife as such, but to avoid offending local sensibilities you may have wanted to add that most of your kin was spoken for before you went outside the clan. She would like to believe that your associates would 22

I was recently induced to participate in a touring drive of Arkansas with a number of Porsche enthusiasts. Our first gathering was in a motel room that held four beds and was occupied by people who were clearly related to each other: nieces, nephews, brothers, cousins, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, sons in law, daughters in law and so on. Although it was difficult to refrain from commenting on the questionable propriety of this arrangement, I did in fact accurately identify my partner as my wife. Would it have been more proper if I had bent the truth in order to fit in and said she was a kissin' cousin of mine? Gentle Reader:

The first night our group spent together was in Eureka Springs. Dinner was at a restaurant that allowed us to bring our own libations. Some folks were seen drinking out of glasses rather than just passing the jug and sharing like normal people. Was I wrong to have just nodded my head in disgust or should I have throwed my pitchfork at 'em? Gentle Reader: In Arkansas, an open display of violence at dinner is never acceptable. That's what the dessert course is for. Rest stop near Jasper AR Gentle Reader:

Whenever I am confronted by someone holding a recently deceased turkey that has been heaved out of an airplane, I always respond with, “Say, that sure is a fine looking fowl there. If the tailbone hasn't been broken in the fall, it is sure that your next wish will be granted! Maybe you could wish to have some of your teeth grow back!” As to permitting a dead-turkey holder to be photographed in a Porsche, I would allow it in the name of peaceful coexistence, but try to use the car with a red interior in case the beast has sprung a leak.

Mrs. Glover, Mimi Grant, Jim & Marji Chadwick (Lunch @ Cliff House)

The next day we drove through a little town called Yellville. We hadn't planned it but we arrived just in time for their annual festival, a two-day affair featuring a “turkey drop.” This event involves heaving a live wild turkey from the cockpit of single engine aircraft flying over town at about 500 feet elevation. The excitement builds as the bird kind of glides/plummets to the ground. Any attendee of the festival who captures the bird alive, wounded or expired, is revered and allowed to keep the beast for further disposition. While PETA (Porsche drivers for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) frowns on the abuse of the animals in this way, what is the proper way to congratulate or acknowledge the successful acquisition of the prized bird when confronted by a person holding a dead turkey? Also, how might one graciously respond to a request by a dead-turkey holder to be photographed in a Porsche (a repeating theme on this trip)?

Dear Miss Manners:

Jim Chadwick dazzling the crowd in the Turkey Trot. Dear Miss Manners: A parade was held as part of the Yellville festival and two of our cars drove in it but did not pay the entry fee. The executive board of our club feels that they should be banned for life for committing this fraud, but they're nice guys and were only trying to get the heck out of town (albeit the slow way) to avoid the risk of a turkey collision, commonly excluded from most car insurance policies. Is there a proper way to plead our case? Gentle Reader: Tell the board they are members of PETA (Parade Enthusiasts Touring Arkansas) and qualify for a sponsorship exemption. Dear Miss Manners:

On the last day of our drive, our tour leaders made us drive through heavy rain and blinding fog. Yet at one of our dinners we had honored them with praise and valuable gifts for the countless hours they spent planning and coordinating our tours over the years. Although these tours were always full of fun, great roads and new experiences, is there any way to tactfully express our rage at their inability to change the weather? Gentle Reader: Yellville girl with a prized turkey.

He said that I wasn't going to believe it, but that it was some of the best pizza he'd had in a long time. I didn't believe him, but then again, I've never had a slice of pizza that I didn't like. New and recent members Gregg Hutmacher, Gayle and Luanne Linke, effervescent Dossie Post and Russell Milcent, and the ebullient Luke Edson really cheered us up with their attendance and fresh outlook on things. And speaking of Russell Milcent, he is moving here from Florida in order to be with Dossie Post. One look at her picture below and you'll understand.
