Driving On: In With the New By John Hamilton, Region President

I

t’s been a great ride for the past four years as your Maverick Region President, and now it’s time for me to turn the steering wheel over to another very capable Maverick (who will have been elected at the Founders’ Day event at the end of November).

Honestly: I’ve had a great time being your Pres. and having the privilege of working with so many passionate and enthusiastic volunteers (most of their names and/or pictures are on page 4). That’s been the key to the growth and excitement that has come to this club: all the great people who give of their time and energy to make things happen AND to discover ways to make membership in the club even more worthwhile to each one of our members. So the keys are: 1. Be surrounded by enthusiastic, passionate people who care. 2. Have a diverse group who have different viewpoints, but are willing to listen to each other’s perspectives and then ACT when they come to a workable avenue. 3. Continue to recruit more members into the board meetings, who will find their niche where they can add to the club. 4. Don’t take everything too seriously – it’s a club for fun! 5. Keep smiling! So although I’m passing those “keys” along to my worthy successor, I’ll still be around. And by the way, this isn’t a one-way street. My wife, Chris, and I have received the great rewards of getting to meet and know so many new people. From the board meetings, to the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House, to the Sunday Drives, to the DEs, to the Maverick Monthly Socials, to the parties and to the annual Porsche Parade, we have discovered new friendships that will last the rest of our lives. I cherish these four years more than you know. We’ve grown and had a lot of fun along the way. And guess what? I’m expecting to have more fun with our Maverick Region in all the years to come. Thank you for letting me be a part of you. 2 December

Mav of the Month How does one handle the challenge of an unforeseen system failure? It’s different, depending upon who has the responsibility for the program affected. In October we received a couple of complaints that items ordered from our on-line “Goodie Store” had not been received, and that our members were not receiving any replies to their order inquiries. Fortunately, our Goodie Store chairperson, Pat Friend, jumped on the situation and discovered that the vendor had become incommunicado. Pat immediately contacted our National PCA and found a possible replacement. With daily communication and negotiation, Pat got us a replacement vendor who sent via overnight shipment the first nine samples for our board meeting. Situation resolved! Thank you, Pat, for being the driving force that got us back on track within three weeks. Your perseverance and persistence really paid off, and your Maverick Region is in your debt . . . payable by a gift card to the Silver Fox Steakhouse in Grapevine. Thank you and congratulations as our Mav of the Month!

President John Hamilton C-817-907-7823 president@mavpca.org

John enjoys DEs, Maverick Socials, the Porsche Parade, and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab, which is how it got into his blood.

Gareth still remembers the cover of the car magazine that drew him into a lifetime of loving cars. He spent many afternoons riding his bike as a young kid to the local newsstand to buy and read everything he could. He now owns a Midnight Blue 911S and enjoys driving it in wonderful Texas!

t’s hard to believe, but it’s December already. We have only one more in-car event left this year – the Frick’n Toy Run – but our other social events will continue as always: the Lewisville, Richardson, and Southlake lunches, and the Maverick Monthly Social. So if you haven’t had enough of us already, come on out to one of these get-togethers. It will be worth your time! We will have a few familiar faces stepping down at the end of the year, with new ones taking their places. But I’d like to point out a couple of those familiar faces in particular – Travis and Robyn Howard. I know they have been recognized in these pages before, especially by Region President John Hamilton, so at the risk of sounding redundant, I’ll throw in my two cents as well. Travis first appeared on Page 4 of Slipstream in the April 2007 issue as being in charge of Autocross / Time Trial Tech Inspection. He was so new, there was not even a photo of him yet! A year later he was listed as the Time Trial Chair, a position he has held through this year. In 2009, Robyn joined him on the

Board Page as Swap Meet Chair. By 2012, Robyn had also taken on the positions of Autocross and Time Trial Registrar, as well as AX/TT School Chair, while Travis continued to lead the Time Trial series and take care of our beloved Truckster, the AX/TT equipment transporter and “timing tower.” In 2013, Travis officially took over the Autocross Chair position as well. By my count, that’s eight years of service from Travis and six from Robyn. Like many others who autocross and time trial regularly, I have admired the dedication that the Howards have shown in keeping those series alive and kicking, and will be sad to see them step down, although they can’t be blamed for wanting to pass along their positions to “new blood.” So thank you Travis and Robyn for your great efforts and attitudes these last few years – you are appreciated! And now for something completely different: Please welcome new Slipstream advertiser Garages of Texas, a new venture by Maverick’s own Jack Griffin (see page 21). For those of you with more cars than storage space, this may be what you have been looking for! Read on!

Gimme a Minute: November Board Meeting By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

T

he meeting began at 7:02 pm with President John Hamilton introducing guests David Grant and Vicki Poirier visiting from Winnipeg. They are avid car nuts and enjoy working races. They will be flagging at our upcoming Club Race. Welcome to town and thanks for the help! John mentioned that the date has been set for the next Club Race at COTA in Austin for May 9-10, 2015. As this has been a three-region collaborative event for two years, we discussed whether or not we would want to again participate. A motion was made during the meeting to approve sending a check for $9,000 as our Region’s portion to reserve the track next year. The motion was passed. Membership Chairs Tom and Susan Froehlich sent in their report that we have 1483 primary and 2355 total members. While down from the all-time high in July, it’s back on the uptrend. Goodie Store Chair Pat Friend reported that the company we had been getting our regional merchandise from went belly up, causing orders to not be filled. He moved quickly and found a new resource in Proforma. They provide merchandise for PCA National and several other regions. We currently have 11 items chosen for the Maverick store, but others can be added at any time. Send an email to goodiestore@mavpca.org to receive a link to the full catalog. count at around $130K before we send the check for the COTA Club Race. All events have been making money, which has helped greatly.

DE Chair Chris Tabor next said that the DE events have been going well all year long. All have made money for the club and many run groups have been completely sold out. He has reserved dates for 2015, which he will pass on to those who need them.

Sunday Drive Chair John Harvey mentioned that the drive to the Vetro Glass tour on Nov. 15 had to change the start time to 9 am. He has other ideas brewing for future great drives and destinations. During the Grand Pappy Point tour recently they utilized run groups designated by different colors (similar to DE events), which seemed to do a very good job organizing everyone. He will continue using that method for future tours.

Concours Chair Andy Kay mentioned that the 928 3rd Coast Event was coming up the next weekend in the Hill Country. He will be in attendance and will work to get an article and photos for Slipstream. Social Chair Tracy Robertson is excited that Founders’ Day is coming up Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Bent Tree Country Club in North Dallas. The Silent Auction is always a big draw. She wants everyone to come, especially board members. At the event will be the photography contest. We had more entries than expected, which is great. Due to the later-than-normal date for Founders’ Day, we opted to not have a Holiday Party this year, so we will still be collecting gift cards, but will do so at Founders’ Day. The All Member Party is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Hackberry Creek Country Club. Treasurer Jim Falgout reported that we have a healthy bank ac-

Rally Chair Don Sebert said that he would be working with John Harvey to combine a rally with the Sunday Drive “Frick’n Toy Run” (affectionately named for our own Dave and Jean Frick) scheduled for Dec. 7.

TT and AX Chair Travis Howard next said that the Oct. 5 Time Trial at MotorSport Ranch was a great success. There were 40 drivers. Since the event wasn’t completely full, it allowed the participants more runs. The Oct. 25-26 TT/AX weekend in Mineral Wells had a good turnout as well. Upcoming is the Nov. 15-16 double TT weekend, also in MW. He will have some special trophies. Although no full replacement chair has stepped up, he is trying to work with other clubs to share their Autocross events and will even help set up dates, if needed. Reporting for Swap Meet Chair Robyn Howard, Travis said that the Oct. 18 Swap Meet had around 20 swappers and about 65 attendees. As always, Zims offered great discounts to all in attendance.

DE & CR Registrar Wendy Shoffit stated that the upcoming Club Race had about 70 racers signed up and over 50 DE entrants. It should be a great event! She also has been working with Tracy and Linda on items for Founders’ Day and with daughter, Jasmine, on doing Slipstream event ads. Editor Carey Spreen reported that despite some problems at the printer, Slipstream got out on time. Many thanks to our mail house, GM Direct Marketing, for their speedy work. He also said that Sue Crimm will be lending her expertise to provide lighting for the photography contest at Founders’ Day. He also has a contact for new drive ideas in the Tyler area. Lastly, he has been working with Jim Hirsch to get help with Slipstream. Hopefully Jim will feel comfortable enough to take over as editor next year. Finally, John Hamilton announced the winner of the Mav of the Month, Pat Friend, for working so quickly and diligently to solve the crisis with the Goodie Store. Congratulations! Meeting was adjourned at around 8:15 pm.

his month’s garage belongs to Mark Schnoerr, who first joined PCA in 1978 and has since participated in PCA Zone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 12 activities, and his exceedingly multi-talented German wife, Sigrid. The Schnoerrs have a three-car garage and a separate multi-car, fully-insulated, climate-controlled shop (with lift) space, for a combined area that is a bit larger than their spacious home, all of which is perched on a hill overlooking three acres of land backing up to a winding creek. Speaking of astounding, this couple works in tandem on a speciallybuilt table that can easily hold the weight of the engines they work on together. Their Clean Room is also climate-controlled, and is loaded with parts and tools of all kinds, plus space for their floor-to-ceiling array of trophies, signs, artwork, and memorabilia that goes back to Mark’s entry into the world of motorsports when he was the Open Class Motocross Champion of Central America as a teenager living in Panama. Sigrid won the title in her ’74 914 2.0. Together, Mark and Sigrid recently rebuilt the motor, but it still has the original Ravenna Green paint, complete with sand and stone chips from long ago DE events at Riverside Raceway (Orange Coast Region) and the original interior. Mark has owned this car twice, with a 13-year gap between ownerships. Check out the Matchbox car that a friend “enhanced” to make it an identical match (no

Destination Restoration: A Suspension Odyssey, Part 2: Tie Rods and Ball Joints By Ash Seidl-Staley

A

nd we’re back! Let’s delve right into Part Two of our suspension rebuild. Before any actual suspension work is to be started, the car needs to be firmly jacked up in the front, and small wood blocks need to be placed behind the rear tires to prevent any possible roll back (having the car in gear helps too). I am sure that if you are accustomed to working on your Porsche, you know how to properly jack one up, but it never hurt anyone to be too safe. For this build I found it best to jack one side of the car up by its designated jack point, and then place a jack stand on a section of the car’s cross member. Next,

jack the other side up and place a second jack stand on another portion of the cross member. Once the car is up, give it a good shove or two to really make sure it is supported; some of the effort used to break loose the nuts and to separate the ball joints requires a lot of force, so a stable vehicle is a must. With the car up, the next step is to remove the wheels. While swapping out the suspension components I found it best to work on one side first, completely finishing it and then working on the other. This not only helps keep the rebuild process simple and organized; it also leaves you with a mirror image reference to check if your work is being done correctly. Since I was practically taking everything off the suspension with a mind to replace and clean all the components, I

decided to start the process with the turbo tie rod upgrade.

Broken tie rod end The first step in removing the tie rod is to unbolt it from the A-arm. Take a pair of pliers and remove the small cotter pin that goes

through the castellated nut on the tie rod end, then remove the nut with a 17mm socket wrench. Once the nut is off, take a large angled pickle fork and wedge it in between the A-arm and Matching tie rod lengths the tie rod boot. If you are wondering what a pickle fork is, it is a huge metal bar that looks like a giant musical tuning fork. Removal of the tie rod, though it can be done without one, goes a lot quicker, and is definitely less frustrating and painful with the use of this tool. Once the fork is in place, hit the end of it with a large rubber mallet until the tie rod end pops off. This might seem a little primitive, and your neighbors might wonder what animal you are murdering in the garage, but as long as you only hit the fork handle you won’t damage your precious car. When the tie rod end slips out of its hole (as seen in picture) you can assess the damage to the boot if there is any. If you were just replacing the tie rod end, you would mark the position of the current tie rod end, unscrew it, and screw the new end on, matching it to sit in the same position. However, for this build, we are removing the whole bar, so the next step is to remove the entire tie rod from the steering rack. To do this, get under the car and remove the suspension pan that guards your rack from the road. Reach up and start removing retaining springs from the rubber boots that cover the rack. I used a small screwdriver to carefully roll the spring to the side, slipping off the boot by moving it towards the unhooked tie rod end.

Note: Be careful not to tamper with the tie rod end during the rod removal process! The adjustment portion of the new rod will go much easier if the old rod is at the same length it was while it was on the car. With the tie rod removed, take it to the side and lay it below the new replacement tie rod, adjusting the new rod to match the length of the old one. It is important to remember that with the Lemfoerder kit, you must take the positioning of the large washer into account while making these adjustments. Now that you have a new tie rod, roughly the same length as your old one, the assembly process is basically the reversal of the removal process. Screw the new tie rod into the steering rack, while trying not to change the rod end adjustment. Slide the new rubber boot onto the rod and shimmy it up onto the steering rack, clipping it down with the retaining springs. The last step is to push the tie rod end into the A-arm and secure it with the new castellated nut that came with the kit, then reinstall the cotter pin.

Note: Even if you kept your tie rod end adjustment the same, it is still necessary that you take the car to an alignment shop in order to make sure everything was replaced correctly. And we’re done with the tie rods! Next month we will tackle the infamous ball joint . . .

The tricky part of the tie rod removal comes when you need to remove the whole bar from the rack. Luckily, the creators in Germany designed the tie rod to work as a wrench, whether they meant to or not. Bend the tie rod down to where it is at a 90-degree angle with the steering rack. Carefully reach in and loosen the bar by turning it counterclockwise. If this doesn’t work, you can use the pickle fork again to gain the proper leverage needed to break the bar free, wedging it in the gaps around the large bolt that make up part of the rod, or by using a pipe wrench on the bar and forcefully making it rotate. Eventually, regardless of which method you decide to use, the entire tie rod will unscrew out of the steering rack. 11

Commentary from the Left Seat: My First Car By Robert L Turner

H

istory appears 20/20 when it is fading in the rearview mirror. I should know; I have looked there occasionally, and yep . . . it looks perfect as it fades in the distance. In 1976 I was offered the chance to move to Milano, Italy. My Mom and her third husband moved to Italy on assignment for the company he worked for, and they said I should come over and finish out my high school career at the American School of Milan. Problem was, I decided to stay with my Dad in Kentucky. Turns out I had a great time in my junior and senior years in Lexington, but in that haze of 20/20 revisionist history, I think the years in Milano would have been better. Reason I stayed? I had a car, a girlfriend, and had a lot going on at school. Still, if I could do it over again, I would have learned to speak Italian earlier. So my Dad, in his massive generosity, gave me $500 with which to buy my first car. I looked for weeks in the Lexington Herald Tribune, scanning the car ads for something cool. But $500 and “something cool” were an oxymoron, at least in Lexington. There were no Fiats, Alfas, Healeys, MGs, Triumphs, or Renaults for $500. Hell, there was not even a decent VW Beetle for $500. I came to the slow realization that being a “fer’in” car guy in Lexington in the mid-70s was not going to yield any positive results. So I had to set my sights lower in the automotive pecking order. I looked at a ’67 Camaro; problem was both rear quarter panels were nonexistent – they had rusted away. I asked why, and the owner 14 December

actually told me that they had been hauling some rock salt around in the trunk and some of it must have leaked out. Must have leaked out!? That is sort of like saying the DeTomaso Pantera kind of leaked fuel. Crap, you didn’t get near one of those things with a lit match. I looked at a ’68 Chrysler Imperial; this gargantuan four-door was owned by a little old lady that only drove it to church on sunny Sundays. Really. It had about 15,000 miles and looked brand new. Man, I wanted to buy that car. But my Step-Mom, not known for her automotive mojo, said no. I needed something sportier she said. All I know is that back seat was HUGE. You could do stuff back there, fun stuff! Hmmm . . . sporty car: smaller back seat; ginormous Chrysler: huge back seat. Maybe she had some evil plan to keep me in the front seat. Anyway, we passed on it. Then I went to look at a ’65 Mustang, a light green coupe with a green vinyl interior. It had the 289 cu in V-8 and, rare for the ’65 model, a factory 4-speed (instead of the normal 3-speed or automatic). Problem was, the owner would not take a penny less than $550. I hauled my Dad out to look at it and let him drive it. He begrudgingly let me have the extra $50. I had a car! Of course I had no job or way to pay for gas, insurance, etc, but I had a car. And even though the back seat was small, it did hold two people . . . It served me well my junior and senior years. But it had a couple of features that I discovered (which would come in very handy later). Like the hidden panel at the leading edge of the console. To the untrained eye, it was just a large metal plate that abutted the instrument console. But with a push at

the top, the panel tilted upwards to reveal a huge secret compartment that could hold . . . well, it could hold a lot . . . of stuff . . . Still, we had a few adventures during our two years together. After school I would head out on the back roads and take them down by the Kentucky River. And maybe if I had a little extra time, I would drive the car further away from Lexington. And as the miles piled on, we dropped back decades in time as we flowed deeper and deeper into the country: old farms hiding stills out back, and barns with faded advertising on the sides pushing Marathon Ethyl gas and old cigarette brands that have thankfully long faded from view. I would push it until the Lexington AM stations started to merge into back-country stations advertising local feed stores, Buck’s Bait Shop and Garage, and Gran Pa’s Miracle Cold Remedy and Elixir, and I realized that maybe I had pushed too far. Better to turn around and beat a path back to my back door, arriving just in time for dinner and a hundred questions as to where I had been. Yeah, history looks a perfect 20/20 in the rearview; a cloudy spring day, the highway slick with rain, and the spray coming off the back of the car. Dark green shadows hiding narrow curves, blasted from the gray rock of the hills hugging the river. I learned how to drive on those narrow ribbons of roads and they are still there, calling me back. Except now I would rather take them on a perfect summer afternoon in my Boxster S, the sound of the flat-six blasting its angry engine note off those old rocks. I hope they remember me; I have been there before. And on that exhaust note, see you next time.

Maverick Region member Robert L Turner writes a bit more than his monthly Slipstream column. He has also written two action adventure novels. They are both part of a continuing series called The Driver. Book I starts off following an American racer and team owner Marc Lange. His outfit, Team Technik, competes in a GT3 racing series in Europe. The team is popular up and down pit row, but they have a problem: they are almost broke – just one blown engine away from shuttering the doors. And when their paying gentleman co-driver becomes yet another victim of the global downturn, Marc is even more desperate. Enter Rene Dufour. He is a Driver – a paid mercenary that takes people or things from Point A to Point B, off the grid, under the radar, but frequently into the arms of danger. But when the dust settles and a Driver has finished his Engagement, sometimes the pile of money he counts can be quite large. Rene has been at this game a long

time and wants to slow down and retire. He sets his sights on Marc as his protégé. Rene makes a deal with Marc: he will help to fund the team if Marc will do something in return. That “something” almost gets Marc killed, but when he counts the pile of money – the money that can save his team – he wonders if his fate is sealed; will he follow Rene and become a Driver?

Book I makes a good stocking stuffer. Heck . . . just buy them both and give the car nut in your life lots to read during the cold season.

Book II picks up where the action in Book I left off, and both are available on Amazon. You can download the Kindle version, or if you still like the feel of paper, the print version is also available. The Driver Book I - Decision (available in Kindle and Print) The Driver Book II – Training (available in Kindle and Print) You can find them both here: http:// www.amazon.com/-/e/B005HJ2QLA The Driver Book II makes a very good Christmas present for those readers that love fiction and cars, or maybe that is cars and fiction . . . and The Driver

Personal Journey: Visiting the Midwest in a Porsche Roadster By Jim Hirsch

I

became a first-time Porsche owner at age 61 to fulfill a commitment upon retirement: that my wife and I would travel this country by road rather than air as much as possible from now on. Why the Porsche part of the requirement? Forty years ago, newly married, I moved past muscle cars and bought my first roadster, a 1966 MG Midget (it had to be British, right?), as two seats were all my wife Sharon and I needed. I had toyed with the idea many years prior to this while driving an early MGB, but being 16 at the time, the pull of the muscle cars of that era was too compelling. Living in Minnesota meant that the driving season was relatively short. The Midget pretty quickly made room for another roadster – a 1968 Triumph TR250 – which made quite a few road trips. That led to a 1973 MGB a couple of years later, which made even more and longer road trips. Roadsterowning came to a quick halt for us in 1981 with the birth of the first of our four children, due to the need for more seats for travel as well as a shrinking home budget. Forward to the mid-2000s: our children were growing up and getting their own addresses, so a 2005

Honda S2000 entered the stable as the affair with roadsters began anew. That fling only lasted a short time as the retirement plan began to take higher priority and we consolidated the vehicle ownership. The idea of returning to a roadster was high on the list as the retirement date finally arrived. Researching and driving a wide variety of “roadsters” brought the final list down to one – the Porsche Boxster S. We ordered our 2014 981S with Agate Grey/Amber Orange interior on January 9, took delivery on April 17, and haven’t looked back! The first long road trip was planned to coincide with the TUDOR Championship Racing series at Road America in August (more on that later). We scheduled 14 days for the trip, and the route looked to be around 3,500 miles (actual shown). Driving on all types of roads – interstate, US highway, state highway, county, city, and even gravel – and in all types of weather – cool and rainy to hot and windy (30 mph headwind) – the Boxster S simply performed flawlessly! I tracked each segment using the trip computer and continued to be amazed by the combination of performance and efficiency the Boxster provided (up to 33.9 mpg on one 400-mile day). The first day was a nine-hour drive up to Omaha, NE. Taking a little different route rather than simply Interstates brought us to some two-lane highways that gave ample opportunity to sample the passing capabilities of the Porsche. Suffice it to say

Jim and Sharon in the pits at Road America that it takes almost no time to reach triple digits while passing! The next leg took us to the hometown of Le Mars, IA and then on to Minneapolis, MN – our home for 26 years and the birthplace of our four children, along with many longtime friends whom we see very infrequently any longer. After a few days visiting friends (and a Twins game at Target Field!), the next stop was Elkhart Lake, WI for the races at Road America. As you might expect, lots of beautiful roads to travel and nice temperatures compared to home here in Texas.

Porscheplatz parking The experience at Road America was fantastic! The Chicago Region of PCA hosted the Porscheplatz, and Porsche Cars North America provided us with their only two pit passes during the TUDOR race on Sunday – we had traveled the furthest distance for the race!

worked well, and kept the drinks stable and out of the way.

The group photographer also put our Boxster S front and center in his lineup for the official Porscheplatz photo. The next stop had us traveling around Chicago to Kalamazoo, MI to see the Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids and a family visit. A final stop before heading back to Texas was scheduled for Kansas City, and an opportunity to see a second baseball game during the trip at Royals Kaufman Stadium. Taking some scenic roads through Missouri to get to KC was yet another highlight of the drive. The final day of our road trip had us heading back to Texas fighting a 20-30 mph headwind the entire trip in 100-degree temperatures. Even with nature working against it, the Boxster S managed to return 29.4 mpg at an average speed of 69 mph. This first (of many more to come) road trip with our Boxster S proved to us that we made the right decision by choosing the Porsche roadster as our traveling companion. It easily held everything we needed for 14 days on the road and gave a comfortable and sure-footed ride the entire distance that was never tiring. You can view photos from our road trip at http://bit.ly/road_trip_2014 and Road America videos at http://bit.ly/road_america.

Fitted luggage made the most of the Boxster’s two trunks you information at all times. We found that the SCOSCHE USBC242M 12 Watt USB Car Charger fit the bill perfectly, with two USB connectors available for use. And, speaking of keeping your devices handy, the T-Design phone mount worked really well to provide a steady and easy-to-access location for our iPhones. Easy to install and left no markings on our interior when I removed it.

We did find a few options that helped our Boxster S perform even better for our road trip – you might find them helpful as well. First, the two trunks of the Boxster S provided us plenty of storage for 14 days’ worth of belongings, but it helped immensely to have luggage that was “fitted” to the spaces so no areas were wasted. We used the set from Roadtrip Luggage. Next, on 9-10 hour driving stints, you want to keep your devices charged and available to provide

Keeping larger water bottles or drinks handy needs different cupholders than the builtin Porsche version. I found that the ones from Ultimate Cupholder

Of course, we met our share of flying insects over all of these miles, so the grille guards from Zunsport not only kept the bugs out of the radiators, but kept any other flying debris out as well. I also have to credit the XPEL Ultimate clear film protection full front coverage for making clean-up easy each evening after the long drives and keeping stone chips in the paint down to zero!

The Boxster S “kills bugs fast,” but the grille guards and clear film protect the radiators and paint.

Finally, for peace of mind when driving without a spare in some pretty remote locations, I brought along a tire plug kit and practiced making a few plugs on some old tires before leaving. I foresee many Porsche Parades, Escapes, and Werks Reunions in our future! See you on the road!

Sunday Drive: Tour to Grandpappy Point By John Harvey, Sunday Drive Chair

ack in the spring we had a route planned to Lake Texoma for an outing to one of our favorite destinations, The Point Restaurant. With the routing planned, pre-drive signed off, and special arrangements made to accommodate our crowd, we miscalculated the weather. Here came the rain. As most of you know, there are very few straight roads on our routes. We pride ourselves on finding the twistiest way to any destination. The preregistration indicated over 70% to be first timers so we postponed the event.

Dining al fresco on Lake Texoma. view the route from the passenger seat thanks to my personal chauffeurs, Chris and Gabe Sorrells, who drove B.J., me, and my new hip to our destination in their new Macan Turbo. What a ride! When we arrived at The Point, Angie and her excellent staff had the grill fired up, serving the best burgers and sides for all of the participants. The view from the deck was so relaxing as we watched the sailboats tacking back and forth on the lake. All in all it was about the most perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon with our Maverick PCA pals. Photo by Mark Lenz

Mark Ebeling gives the drivers’ briefing. Wow, were we glad we did, because the weather in October was absolutely perfect; clear blue skies and temps in the 60s. We had an absolute blast driving some of our favorite North Texas roads and across the single-lane Carpenter’s Bluff Bridge into Oklahoma. I even had the opportunity to

Time Trial 4 and Autocross 6 Results: The MineralRing By Wendy Shoffit, Secretary, DE and Club Race Registrar Editor’s Note: This article is about the TT3/ AX5 weekend in September, but due to space constraints, it didn’t fit into the November issue. However, the gist of it still applies.

L

ife sometimes gets in the way of having fun in ways that you used to do so easily. Back in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, James and I were avid autocrossers with an awesome group of PCAers. The decision for each event wasn’t whether to go or not, it was whether we would head out Friday night or Saturday morning. It was almost automatic. Then, other parts of life started getting in the way of that. Car troubles crop up, other volunteer jobs creep in (being Zone Rep), and other car hobbies (Club Racing) start taking precedence. It sometimes is very hard to make the choice to go back to the fun you used to have, not because it’s LESS fun than it was, but the decisions get more complicated. That was not the case on the weekend of Sept. 13-14. Finding ourselves with an open weekend, we made the choice to go out and partici-

pate in the TT/AX weekend in Mineral Wells. We were not sorry! We had an absolute blast and a half! Travis and Robyn Howard have led this series of events for the past six years or so. They have done a phenomenal job. I’m sad that they are stepping down at the end of the year and am hopeful someone will step UP and take their place. The Time Trial on Saturday took us a while to get back in the swing of things, but once we did it was like coming back home. We remembered the corners and the straights, but seem to have forgotten how to MAKE those corners every time. Whoops! The surface of the MineralRing is always a challenge, but once you get it again . . . you’ve got it. Our tires gave their all so we would have grip. At the end of the day we were all tired and done. Approximately 30 drivers came out to enjoy the track that day. Sunday’s Autocross event was probably one of the most fun courses I’ve driven in a long time. It was absolutely PERFECT for our car! Nice twisty bits to take advantage of the suspension modifications, and some good straights for the 911SC horsepower. It just worked for us!

James took Fastest Time of Day and I took second just a mere ¾ of a second behind him. It was a smaller crowd than we’re used to, but apparently there was another club’s event taking some of the now regular entrants. Sadly, though, there were very few of the people out there we used to run with. Ed Mayo made an appearance, which was awesome! Richard Diller was out Saturday, but had car troubles. Nowhere to be found were the Usserys, Amonds, Gohlkes, Steeles, Suttons, Bells, Dugans, Davises, Machalas, Bineks, Nannises, deJongs, Lumpkins, McGlohen, Moncus, Buckley, Henderson, McCoy, Lockas, Atkins, Shaffer, Hardison, Petri, Scudder, Lane, Miller, Sandusky, Olcha, Seipp, Flanders, Brown, Halla, Lage, Kuykendall, Wilkins, Mears, Snodgrass, Johnson, Takahashi, Lewis, Erz, Randall, and Ruehs . . . just to name a few. I’m guessing they’re all like us: found something else that stole our attention. Maybe one day we can have a Leadfoot Reunion event where a few of us can once again put aside life’s distractions and find the passion for something that we once loved to do.
