Shifting Gears:

The Final Drives of 2016

By Jim Falgout, Region President

1

st Gear – I am writing this shortly after our “Annual Celebration,” formerly known as Founders’ Day. Tracy Robertson and Phyllis Gallegos did a fine job organizing this event. Everyone who attended had an enjoyable evening. Some of us obtained some nice items in the silent auction. The proceeds of the silent auction go to one of our charities, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. We saw some fine pictures of Porsches that members had entered in the photography contest. At the Annual Celebration, the Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award is often presented. This award is given to a member of the club who has exhibited superior performance and dedication to the Maverick Region. The Selcer Award was presented to John Hamilton this year. John preceded me as president. He is an excellent example of someone who has a great passion for the club and will fill any role to make sure it is successful. Apparently, everyone there agreed because they gave him a standing ovation. 2nd Gear – This coming weekend is the annual club race at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. Hopefully you were able to attend or participate in this fun event. 3rd Gear – You are reading this in the last month of the year. We do not have many club events in December with all the holiday activities our members already have scheduled. In fact, our next Monthly Social is not scheduled until February. Hope you can make that event. Stephanie Ho always does a great job in arranging those activities. 4th Gear – This is also the last month of my second term as your President. It has been an honor to serve you. This club has the benefit of having great members who contribute their time and talents towards its success. It has been a pleasure working with everyone involved. We have had some challenges, members who suddenly were unable to perform and in every case someone else stepped up to fill the need. 5th Gear – The previous gear leads me into my favorite topic: volunteering. Your Club needs you…… Volunteer: You will be glad you did. 6th Gear – I have often heard the expression “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” I can attest to that. As many of you know, I was struck with a malady known as Guillean Barre’ Syndrome. Without 2 December

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 much warning, I lost the ability to walk. I was hospitalized for three weeks and since then have been going through rehabilitation. The good news is full recovery is the prognosis. During my hospitalization, I received emails, Facebook postings, cards, presents, visits, and phone calls from members of Maverick Region. It was amazing. I will be forever thankful for all those and the prayers that were said for me. My recovery has been exceptionally quick. MAV OF THE MONTH: David Robertson Our Mav of the Month was contributing to our club long before he had an official role. His wife Tracy, was, and still is a committee chairperson and he assisted her in that role. Now he is an officer, our current vice president. When I could not fill my role as president, he stepped in without hesitation and did a great job. Your next president, David Robertson, is Mav of the Month, as we come to the end of 2016.

Gimme a Minute:

November Board Meeting

By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

T

he meeting began at 6:59 pm. We welcomed President Jim Falgout back. He announced that nominations for the PCA National awards are due 12/31 and asked for suggestions. Andy Kay nominated Stephanie Ho for Enthusiast. Jim also asked if anyone was interested in becoming Zone 5 Representative, as Lynn Friedman’s term was ending. He put forth a request from Richard Solomon to donate to the Boot Campaign charity for their “Santa Boots.” David Robertson made a motion to donate $5K. Jim Falgout seconded. The motion passed. VP David Robertson reporting for his wife, Social Chair Tracy Robertson, said the Annual Celebration is Saturday, Nov 5. As in the past, the event will include the traditions of the Selcer/Murrell Award presentation, Silent Auction, Photo Contest, and Officer Election. Changes include a heavy hors d’oeuvres buffet instead of the seated dinner. Safety Chair Joe McGlohen announced we have safe events with no incidents being reported. All events have been properly insured and are well run, not just DE events, but all with moving cars. Charlie Davis was delivering raffle items. He helped judge the photo contest this year. There were more entrants than last year and said they were great quality. Next year they might include a cell phone photo category to adapt to how people take pics. Bill Middleton again thanked the Tours and DE group for their support of the Hope Shelter. PCA Tours Chair Tom Martin gave him additional gift cards that people brought to the latest tour. He said they all go to a good cause, including a recent case with a mom and five kids who arrived at Hope in 6 December

the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on their backs. To celebrate the tenth year of their facility, he encouraged all to attend their Christmas party on Dec. 17, which he wants to make bigger and better. Secretary Wendy Shoffit reported for Goodie Store Chair Chris Flaugh that the new logo window decals were ready to distribute on Saturday. He will continue to sell classic logo merchandise until December 15, but after that will be the new logo. He also proposed to simplify the name badge design to just have the name, without city and vehicle info. Reporting for Membership Chair John Hamilton, we had a net loss of 13 members, but still have a positive YTD increase of 40. He suggested it’s time to update the membership brochure, as the new digital display panels have piqued more interest and people have been taking more copies. As DE and Club Race Registrar, Wendy said we had a DE event in September that had lower than normal attendance, but since it was on the shorter track, hopefully we didn’t lose money. Registrations for the Club Race (Nov. 12-13) this year also seem to be down. Kurt Skaggs is a Creative Director by trade and a new PCA volunteer. He is going to help the Slipstream team with graphic design work. Editor Jim Hirsch said we are holding steady at 1900 copies/ month and is going to get price quotes to print in full color. Bill Kruder is contacting advertisers to confirm who wants to receive printed copies, if they are not already. Jim thanked event chairs and all for getting him content each month. Co-Editor Carey Spreen continues working with UNT to digitize past Slipstreams. We were missing 1998 issues, but fortunately was

November 2, 2016 able to borrow them from Ed Mayo. Kevin Hardison at Ussery Printing will be preparing PDFs going backwards in time, while UNT is going forwards and they will meet in the middle. PCA Tours Chair Tom Martin said that the last tour to Rancho Sereno was great with 117 people and 66 Porsches in attendance. He had a surplus of $466, which will cover the supply budget next year. He collected an additional $225 in Walmart Gift Cards for Hope. He has been working with PCA National Tour Chair Greg Halverson to encourage the use of Garmin BaseCamp as part of the program. He is stepping back in 2017 to let Bill Orr and Mark Pitarresi take the lead, with additional help from interested others. Mark stated he is glad to be helping out with tours. He has a potential set of dates and routes already for next year. Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho reported that the Oktoberfest event at Uncle Buck’s was well attended by about 100 members, with 80 staying for dinner. The manager invited us back for December and a special holiday event. They want to include a canned food drive as well. There will not be one in January to avoid conflict with the All Member Party. Calendar Chair Brendan Eagan is turning over the reins to Karl Poulsen next year. Karl has lurked in PCA for years and now is happy to help with the calendar. Rally Chair Don Sebert said the October event was successful with 30 cars and 60+ people, including many in costume. They had a great route and food. Hopes to be bigger and better next year. John Harvey and Jeff Sebert have volunteered to help with the program.

Concours Chair Andy Kay mentioned PCA Palooza was next weekend and there are at least two caravans going. He will write an article about it, as one of the largest events in PCA next to Parade. He also attends other car show events, which he will promote on Facebook for enthusiasts. PCA Tours Co-Chair Bill Orr mentioned the upcoming Coffee, Cones & Scones event at the autocross on 11/13. He has been working hard to update our website, including turning the new logo “on” Saturday night after the Annual Celebration. He has also been researching custom PCA license plates for Texas, which could net us royalties. He will continue to do so. Lastly, Jim Falgout announced this month’s Mav of the Month is David Robertson, who did a great job stepping in for him while he was recovering from an illness. Great job, David!

ell Mavs, it’s the end of another year. Maybe I’m getting old but I feel like 2016 barely just started, even with the debilitating and oftentimes grueling presidential election cycle! As a Gen-Y-er that is socially liberal yet fiscally conservative I often feel isolated from the mainstream hubbub. To be honest, I couldn’t care less about the pageantry of the election; I care about results. Give me a steady wage, a home, a garage, some gasoline, and the means to buy a Porsche, and I’m a happy camper. Hopefully we all survived the first month with our new president elect, were able to enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving meal, and have been spending the holiday season with family and friends. Looking forward to 2017, I plan on introducing another set of themed articles for our prestigious newsletter. Keeping up with my personal and professional aspirations, I plan on researching the histories of various events, mechanical innovations, and pop culture phenomena relating to Porsche. Due to my graduate work, the bookshelves in my study are already lined with eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century American histories, but tucked away within my authentic Ger-

man schrank are books all about our cars. I have access to material about 911s, 914s, 924s, 944s, 968s, and 928s. I have books describing the histories of Porsche racing, as well as literature designating each model’s vehicle specifications, not to mention a whole cache of Panoramas and Slipstreams! The new series of articles will cover a wide array of topics, from the reasoning behind the hood scoop placement on the 924 Carrera GT to revealing a few debates Germany Region members had over what the best brakes were in the late 60s. Not to worry though. The year 2017 will bring many more Porsche-related “Chatter” articles, as well as some much-needed “Destination Restoration” additions. I am pleased to report that Jenny, Christian, and I will be moving into our newly constructed house in the beginning months of next year. At that point I will finally have a garage, and the real fun can actually begin; someone has a 935 to build remember . . . Happy Holidays from the Seidl-Staleys, and as always, Wrench on Mavs!

PCA Tours Recap:

Rancho Sereno Redux

By Tom Martin, PCA Tours Co-Chair

W

hile waxing nostalgic recently, the song “Happy Trails” popped into my head. You remember that golden oldie from Roy Rogers, don’t you? The song struck a certain chord in my head; I think it was G Major, or maybe it was Asia Minor. Whatever. “Happy trails to you, until we meet again . . . ” No matter my efforts, I could not delete that engaging little ditty from my brain. It became clear that a flush was needed. It was time for another PCA Tour to Rancho Sereno. And so, on a temperate Saturday morning in midOctober, 117 Mavericks in 66 Porsches flocked to the campus of Grayson College in Van Alstyne to embark upon a spirited 90-mile jaunt to Rancho Sereno in Whitesboro. The ranch is located smack dab in the middle of horse ranch country, just about seven miles from Michael Schumacher’s ranch in nearby Gordonville. Bill Orr marks the An eleventh-hour change gathering point for the PCA Tour with club flags in the route was necessitated when ranch owner Mike Maberry informed me that downtown Whitesboro would be closed to traffic on the day of the Tour because of the Whitesboro Peanut Celebration -- and you don’t mess with Mr. Peanut. Initially the last leg of the Tour ran through the downtown area, so a detour was incorporated into the route, which actually turned out quite well. Unlike most Tours, the first 10-15 miles of the route was not dedicated to getting out of the confines of the Metroplex. Right from the initial off, Mavericks were able to experience the exhilaration of exploring their Porsches’ limits on wide open, challenging twisties. And so we drove, through the sleepy towns of Weston, Celina, and Pilot Point, and then the small hamlets of Tioga, Gunter, and Dorchester, before ambling through the pastoral towns of Sadler, Whitesboro, and Callisburg, leading up to the bucolic grounds of Rancho Sereno. Ranch Sereno is owned by Mike and Lisa Maberry, former Maverick Region members. They are very accommodating hosts, and arrangements were made with Dickey’s BBQ to provide a real Texas lunch for the participants.

Photos by Bill Orr In terms of weather, we couldn’t have wished for a better day. Lounging on the patio of the ranch, eating Ready to begin the drive brisket with all the fixins, enjoying the solitude of the grounds of the ranch, was almost Zenlike. But that’s me, and I’m just sayin’ . . . although I’m pretty sure other Mavs felt the same way. Many thanks to Mike and Lisa Maberry for the excellent accommodations, and to Dickey’s BBQ for the lunch. Kudos to the Tour leaders and sweeps: Bill Orr, Mark Pitarresi, Greg Dranow, Karl Poulsen, and my wife Jan. Big shout-outs also to all the other Mavericks who contributed to the Tours program during the past year: Jon Glover, John Harvey, Voy “Mitch” Mitchell, Young Slack, Chris and Gabe Sorrells, Kurt Reuland, and Kevin Creed. “Happy trails to you, until we meet again . . . ” Stay tuned for the 2017 PCA Tours schedule, and hope to see you on a PCA Tour next year!

Kruder’s Cars & Conversations By Bill Kruder, Region Advertising Chair

W

ell as luck would have it I ran into these two brothers about two years ago at Cars & Coffee (Plano) right after they purchased their SC. Since then, we have had the opportunity to talk over coffee and donuts while hanging out with our cars, either at Porsche Cars & Coffee or some other impromptu Saturday morning gathering. So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . . Jan Pieter (Pete) and Willem (Will) de Waal, owners of a 1982 911SC and 1989 928, members since 2014 Bill Kruder: So are you guys originally from Dallas? Will: Oh no we are from a very small town in southern Virginia right near the North Carolina border. We didn’t move here ‘til about 1981. I was about ten I think. Pete: We moved around a lot as our dad was a Navy doctor. Heck, we lived in I think two or three places in Texas before we finally settled here for good. Will: I guess I’m almost a native; I went to grammar school and high school here. I graduated from Hillcrest High School and went on to SMU. Matter of fact, I played football there. We were the first team to play after the death penalty they had received.

before us. There’s a funny story about that car; dad had it when he was dating our mom. Well, in order to take her out, he had to take a chaperone with him. See, this was in Holland (our parents are Dutch) and that was the custom I guess. So he sold the MGA so that he would have a four door car that he could take my mom and her mom on dates. Go figure, right? BK: So how did you guys get into Porsches? Will: Well I guess that goes back to when I was like in sixth grade. My mom would get D magazine and there were these ads for Porsche and I just marveled at them. So one day my mom takes me and a friend to Forest Lane Porsche and drops us off, and we just hung out there sitting in the cars. Pete: For me it was more recent, in 2013; I had watched an interview of sorts about Magnus Walker (www.MagnusWalker911.com) on CarCast with Adam Carolla (https://m.youtube.com/watch). I thought “I’m going to paint the Miata like his #277 that I had seen in another show.” Well that lasted

BK: So how did the love of cars start? Pete: Well my dad was kind of into them. He really loved British racecars. One of his favorite cars he had was a 1958 MGA. BK: And do you remember it? Pete: Oh no, this was way 12 December

Pete and Will de Waal “sharing” the SC

about ninety seconds, and I thought these air-cooled cars are where it’s at, and figured I better get in front of this tidal wave before its too late. BK: So how did you guys come to share the ‘82 SC? Pete: It really was something that I decided to look into. I bought a couple books to read up on them to just better understand what they were all about. BK: So where did you find it? Pete: I joined PCA as a “quest” member so that I had access to the site to look at cars. Guess I knew I wanted an SC from what I had read about their durability. BK: And you found it there? Pete: No, the funny thing is I found it in Slipstream of all places. I was standing in the Ace Hardware and on the phone with Will and told him about it. Will thought I was kind of crazy that they were way too much money. I told him the amount and he said he wanted in on the deal. So the deal was done we had ourselves a car. BK: Now how do two guys share a car? Will: I guess you would say we have joint custody [laughing]. I live in Frisco and Pete in Coppell and we just shuttle it back and forth from house to house. For a while we would even meet at Cars & Coffee and exchange keys there. Pete has a 1990 Miata that is kind of the shuttle car. BK: Tell me about the car. Pete: Well we bought it in August of 2014. It’s a 1982 SC coupe in Pewter Metallic over black that is pretty much all stock; it has about 140,000 miles. What we liked about

the car is that it has always been in Texas; believe it came to Dallas via El Paso. BK: And Will not only do you share the SC, you have another yourself now? Will: I do. About a year ago, in a weak moment [laughing], I bought a 1989 928 coupe; it’s Stone Gray over black, has about 90K miles on it. BK: I understand you guys have names for your cars? Pete: Yes we do, the SC is Gitta (GIT-tah) which is Dutch and short for Brigitte. Will: And the 928 is Hildi (HIL-dah); another Dutch name. Once again I’m amazed at what you learn about people when we take the time to be interested enough to listen. Two brothers, a car, and one cool story! Will with his 1989 928

Annual Celebration:

Founders’ Day Reboot

By Tracy Robertson, Region Social Co-Chair

F

riendships. Shared Passion. Participation. Charity. Creativity. Contribution. History. Tradition. We have much to celebrate in the Maverick Region. And we celebrated it all at the NYLO Hotel in Las Colinas on Saturday, November 5. As one of the region’s great traditions, we get together each year to commemorate the founding of the Maverick Region more than 50 years ago. The event has some longstanding customs and some newer activities that have quickly become member favorites. The NYLO was a perfect venue, with an industrial chic vibe that allowed us to feel both casual and festive – plus, it has a great parking lot. So, of course, the first thing on the agenda for the evening was to line up our cars in the reserved Porsche-only area, and take advantage of the stunning autumn sunset lighting for a quick photo session. Then, inside to the party! Thanks to our generous sponsor, Autobahn Porsche, we had drinks,

one? Thankfully, the People’s Choice portion of the contest allowed us each to pick our three favorites. And then on to shopping! The Silent Auction was one of the best in recent years – with Porsche Signed and Numbered Art, Apparel, Early arrivals for the Annual Celebration Collectibles, plus photo by Jim Hirsch Bose Speakers, a Microsoft SurfacePro, some tasty hors d’oeuvres, and a lovely Scotch, Bourbon, and Wine, cocktail buffet including shrimp, Golf, beautiful ladies booties from pasta, grilled vegetables, and an asLane Boots, Jack Black Men’s Skin sortment of desserts. Care, Golf, and more, more, more.

But who has time to eat? The Photo Contest and Silent Auction required everyone’s attention! We have a great number of talented photographers in the region, and the entries in our third annual Photo Contest did not disappoint. Six categories, and thirty-seven entries, made for an impressive gallery. Who could possibly choose

Friendly up-bidding was fun and easy for the competitive ones in the room, and all proceeds benefit the region’s charity, the Huffaker Hughes Hope House. The Maverick Region has supported “Hope” for decades, and is always proud to contribute to their work on behalf of women and children.

And the beat goes on! Our DJ Mr Diamond, mixed up a special groove just for us. Global Lounge meets Porsche enthusiast. Most of us couldn’t help but dance, just a little. And, since we were in the dancing mood, we celebrated the great volunteer spirit of the region. President Jim Falgout awarded John Hamilton, Membership Chair and Past President, with the Region’s favorite honor – The Selcer Award, recognizing superior performance and dedication to our PCA Club. Jim next had the privilege of introducing our newly elected Region officers:

President-Elect: David Robertson Vice President: Jim Falgout Treasurer: Richard Solomon Secretary: Wendy Shoffit And, finally, the Annual Celebration provided the official introduction of our new Region logo recently approved by the Board. Inside window decals of this new logo are available to all of our members at each of our upcoming events. This year’s event was such a great success that we are already looking forward to next year’s celebration!

Christmas at Hope

by Bill Middleton Editor’s Note: In addition to the support our club provides to the Huffaker Hughes Hope House from our Annual Celebration fund raising, we also are invited to join in their holiday festivities! Every year, the Maverick Region joins with the Hope Shelter staff and clients to celebrate Christmas out in Mineral Wells. This celebration is to provide a happy, fun Christmas for those clients needing services of the Shelter during the Holiday season. This is funded in part by YOUR generous donations to the Hope Shelter throughout the year. This year, as a special addition, the Hope Shelter is celebrating 10 years of the new facility that the Maverick Region so generously helped with, taking it from just a few sketches and a dream to a real brick and mortar building that will serve this community for many years to come. The actual opening and dedication took place on Christmas Eve in 2006, and the Christmas party was held in the new building. To help celebrate “A Decade of Hope,” we’d like to invite any and all interested Mavericks to make the trek out to Mineral Wells on Saturday, December 17 to join in the festivities as we share this most special of holidays with our partners in Hope. You don’t need to bring anything other than yourselves and your best Holiday spirits – and we all hope that you’ll find watching the festivities brings added joy to your holidays as you’ve brought to theirs with your generosity. Again, the date is Saturday, December 17. The place is the First Presbyterian Church, 300 NW 4th Street, Mineral Wells TX 76067. The festivities begin at noon, and it’s right on an hour drive from downtown Fort Worth, so plan accordingly. If anyone would like to caravan out from the Fort Worth area, please get in touch with me at wrmiddleton@yahoo.com and we can discuss a meeting place and time. See you there!! 17

Maverick Region 2016 Photo Contest

By George Luxbacher, Region Photo Contest Chair

P

orsche owners enjoy taking pictures of Porsches almost (and I emphasis “almost”) as much as driving them … and our annual photo contest has become an eagerly anticipated event! The contest was held this year in conjunction with the Annual Celebration at NYLO Hotel in Irving/Los Colinas on November 5th. Entries were solicited starting in September and by the contest deadline we had accepted 37 entries representing work from 26 photographers (each entrant could submit up to 2 photos); another 17 entries were rejected primarily based on photo pixel size – we had a minimum requirement to justify the not insignificant cost and time requirements of printing, mounting and display. We had a distinguished panel of judges, who took the time to critically review each entry, develop a ranking and provide detailed comments: our heartfelt thanks to Charlie Davis, Bill Middleton and Mark Gluck for

this arduous task. All photos were printed on highquality art photography paper and mounted on foam core board display. I’m sure that all who attended the Annual Celebration will agree – the 37 entries on display were impressive and truly a “Porsche Work of Art”!

Overall Grand Prize and Porsche Portraits Category Jim Lantner, “When Bruce Says Stop”

Motorsports Category Andrew Barber, “997 GTS - Circuit of the Americas”

People Category Peter Wen, “45-Year-Old Rookie”

18 December

There were five (5) categories of photographs as well as a Grand Prize winner. The categories, award-winning photographers and their photograph titles were: Porsche Portraits: Formal portraits of Porsche cars. Jim Lanter, “When Bruce Says Stop” Motorsports: Porsche cars in motion involved in driving events. Andrew Barber, “997 GTS – Circuit of the Americas” People: Individuals at PCA events. Peter Wen, “45-Year-Old Rookie”

PCA Experience Category Linda Bambina, “The Corkscrew to Mt. Rushmore”

The PCA Experience: Photographs that tell us what it means to be a PCA member. Linda Bambina, “The Corkscrew to Mt. Rushmore” Artistic: Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or special effects Michael Baynton, “Barn Find” Grand Prize: Jim Lanter, “When Bruce Says Stop” Those attending the Annual Celebration could vote for three photos for a People’s Choice Award. The winners were: People’s Choice Awards: Jordan Cole, “Untitled” Michael Baynton, “Barn Find” Claudia Hermann, “A Circle of Porsches” As the contest organizer for this year, I had the first opportunity to look at all the entries, a task I thoroughly enjoyed (this offset the disadvantage of being unable to submit my own photos). Many of the entries

came with the story behind the photograph, adding another interesting dimension to my task. Unfortunately, those stories couldn’t go to the judges or the Annual Celebration display as the risk of detracting from the photographs; maybe next year we can find a creative way to include them! Thanks to all who participated by sending in entries and the dedicated group of volunteers who made the contest possible. Among the volunteers in addition to the judges were Charlie Davis who advised me each step of the way and did the printing, Dee Luxbacher who assisted in the mounting and Tracy Robertson who organized the display at the NYLO Hotel. Rules for the next contest will go up on the Maverick Region website in a month or so, including more information on pixel count with the goal of no rejected entries. Given the preponderance of cell phone entries this year (the best camera is the one you have with you!), we will be creating a separate class for those entries and reducing the number of or modifying the categories. Start thinking about your best shots now!

ver 100 club members visited with Porsche friends in our “Porsche Oktoberfest - German Car, German Beer!” party at Uncle Buck’s in Grapevine! We had such a blast!! We have had an amazing year of happy hour/dinner parties in 2016! We started with a Porsche Valentine’s Day at the best French Provençal restaurant, Lavendou, with 125+ attendees! Our first Porsche Summer BBQ Party at Hard 8 was huge, we had over 120 Mavericks in attendance. Our Last Summer Party encouraged the funny, creative side of Mavericks. For the second year in a row, the Porsche Heritage Birthday Party at Arthur’s in September was packed with overseating required. Other events throughout the year had 80 to 100+ Mavericks. They all exemplified how Porsche Pals interact and enjoy each others’ great company beyond our passions with Porsche “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!”. We have a fantastic line up for 2017 and look forward to seeing you there!!

2nd Annual Halloween Rally

Photos by George Luxbacher and Bill Orr

M

ore than 60 Porsche enthusiasts from all over the Metroplex met in McKinney on October 29 for the annual Halloween Road Rally, organized by Don Sebert and George Luxbacher. Though the warm sunny day was not characteristic of cooler Halloween weather, many showed up in costumes to ward off evil spirits and celebrate this traditional community-focused celebration of fall. Creative costumes included Friar Tuck, the Red Baron, Daddy’s Little Monster, a court jester, witches galore, and Judge Roy Bean.

This 914 made a great jack o’lantern photo by Bill Orr

Clyde robbery was filmed in Pilot Point, the rural field where ET visited Texas, and the festival where Gene Autrey’s ghost could be roaming in Tioga. The sometimes tricky route had some ralliers chasing their tails through back roads and over dams as they were on the lookout for spooky spots, abandoned alleys, and hippie ghosts. Ralliers were rewarded for their haunted hunting at their destination, Fortunata Winery in Aubrey (https://www.fortunatawinery. com/). The shaded garden courtyard was a perfect place to sit for a Spell and have a Bite with friends, while indulging in craft wines, homemade brick oven pizzas, gourmet cheeses, and cured meats.

Awards were given to the top three finishers, as well as the DLBF (Dead Last But Finished), who should feel encouraged because they have only one way to go in future rallies . . . up! The winners were: First Place: Driver Miriam Anderson and navigator Tom Cundari Second Place: Driver BJ Harvey and navigator John Harvey Third Place: Driver Lyssa Dursey and navigator Josh Egly (Tom and Jan Martin actually tied for third, so the standings were determined by the tiebreaker, elapsed mileage closest to the official mileage) The coveted DLBF (Dead Last But Finished) award: Jose and Ivan Alvarado Prizes were also awarded for spooktacular costumes: First Place: Ginger and Tom Heuerman Second Place: Sue Crimm and Carey Spreen Third Place: Rebecca and Greg Jeffries Honorable Mention: Pat and Joann Talty

The rally teams in 28 cars were challenged to navigate about 70 miles of country roads in search of signs to unravel mystical word puzzles (wordcrops) and spy ghostly images previously photographed along the route. Newcomers and seasoned ralliers followed explicit directions to “stay on the route” as they uncovered secret haunts like the bank where the Bonnie and 28 December

We are pleased to reassure our Maverick members that no divorces were precipitated nor fights instigated within any of the rally teams as a result of this ghoulish Halloween rally challenge. All left the event tingling with anticipation for the next rally to be scheduled in 2017.

Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

s we speed towards the end of 2016, keep your eyes firmly on the road, but remember to look ahead since the racer’s credo always states that your car will follow your eyes. Let me know if that helps the next time you’re heading for an off-road experience! Many of our members celebrate the holidays or the start of a new year by considering gifts to give others. With that in mind, I’m sure you are proud of your Maverick Region that provides support each year to two charitable organizations: Huffaker Hughes Hope House and the Boot Campaign. Please note this invitation to attend the Hope Christmas Party. I suppose, in this time of giving, you could also consider buying yourself or your loved ones a new Porsche as we reach the end of 2016! Of course that can mean something other than the real vehicle: a Porsche book, print, magazine subscription, Lego, Playmobil, Hot Wheels, electric GT3, wooden first Porsche, etc. In fact, let me give you a few ideas for your Porsche shopping - that might keep me from purchasing too many of these items!

For the art collectors (I’m not counting Porsche posters as art, even though they are very nice!), Guy Allen has just released a new print featuring the SWB 911. This is limited to 200 prints, so you’ll have to act quickly. You can find more info on this one and other car prints of his at http://guyallen.co.uk/ shop-cars. If you’re looking for a different perspective on the Porsche brand in a magazine subscription, I encourage you to consider GT Porsche from the U.K. Not only do they typically get to test models first on that side of the pond, the British writing is always fresh. You can find out more at http://gtpurelyporsche.com/. Of course, the number of toy Porsche models released in the last year is amazing. Everything from a wooden first Porsche (http://shop4.porsche.com/ usa/kids/toy/) to a first 911 from Playmobil (http:// www.playmobil.us/porsche-911-carrera-s/3911.html) to a 1000+ piece model from Lego (https://shop.lego. com/en-US/Porsche-911-GT3-RS-42056) can be yours for great fun! And yes, you could always visit our Maverick Region PCA Store (http://mav.pca.org/store/) as well. With our new logo now released, you’ll only be able to purchase items with our original club logo until December 15. I guess the motto is to shop early and often! Finally, as I’m writing this shortly before Thanksgiving, in anticipation of the final month of 2016, it’s important that I thank the dozens of members who have contributed articles, photos, proof-reading, and so much more to each issue of Slipstream that lands in your mailbox every month. You are all appreciated more than you can imagine and make our Maverick Region members more informed about, and invited to, our many activities throughout the year. See you in 2017!
