Sprockets:

It’s Been Quite a Year

By David Robertson, Region President

T

his has been a great year! It has been so much fun and such an honor to be the president of the Maverick Region PCA in 2017. I was introduced to the Maverick Region PCA by a friend of mine. At that time, I had no idea the club existed much less that here in December of 2017 I would be writing these words as the president. One of the greatest aspects of driving a Porsche for me has been as a member of this club! I have met so many interesting people, forged many friendships and have had many amazing experiences over these years. When I picked up my first Porsche I never imagined that I would actually get to drive it on a F1 track, run it in an autocross, meet with hundreds of other Porsche owners over coffee on Saturday mornings, and join hundreds of others for multiple day events around the country. There really is a lot to our slogan of “driving friendships”. Our club and our events continue to grow. The DE and Club Race crew keep raising the bar higher every year. The quality of our Maverick DE and Club Race events is amazing! This year we started a multi club partnership with Hill country and Lone Star PCA as well as the BMW club to host two DE weekends at COTA which have been a huge success. Add that to our yearly Club race and advanced DE at COTA and we have 3 events at one of the greatest racetracks in the world! The participation in our Tours is among the highest of any PCA region in the country and this year we were one of the first regions in the PCA to host a Porsche SUV event. New this year is Mavs and Mochas, a once per month Saturday morning coffee gathering that has been attracting over 100 cars on average and continues to grow. Our social events only keep getting better and older programs like tech sessions have been reintroduced successfully. The buzz and excitement I am getting from the Maverick Board Members indicate that we have a lot to look forward to! The Maverick Region is fueled by volunteers and we can find a spot for you! Volunteering is a great way to learn more about the club, meet other members and have a lot of fun. Please email volunteers@mavpca.org Oh, did I mention charity? One of our main charities, The Hope House, is having their annual Christmas party on December 16 at noon and all are welcome to attend. The party will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 NW Fourth Avenue Mineral Wells TX, 76067. Please email hope@mavpca.org with any questions. As a reminder, our board meeting minutes are now online at http://mavpca.org/news/minutes/. 2 December

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 This has been a banner year for the Maverick Region PCA and the best is yet to come! MAV OF THE MONTH: Rob Adams If you attended the October Mavs & Mochas event held at Texas Harley-Davidson in Bedford, you might have met this month’s honoree for the first time. Furthermore, if you are a Porsche 968 owner and a Maverick member, you might have met this same person as a fellow 968 devotee virtually via email getting a personal invitation to join the October event. In every case, Rob Adams has demonstrated great organizational skills in contacting, coercing, and ultimately befriending a group of Mavericks who may have felt unloved with their relatively rare Porsche 968 models. Thanks to Rob and his newly energized group of 968 owners, we now have a very active Maverick Special Interest Group. Thank you Rob for becoming a very active member of the Maverick Region and for clearly demonstrating our Region motto of Driving Friendships. Enjoy your gift card to Silver Fox.

PCA Tours: By Nick Maddox

Ray Roberts Lake

T

he morning of this PCA Maverick Tour started with my Lyft ride to Mark Pitarresi’s house, where I would be riding shotgun in “Betsey,” Mark’s 997. It was one of the first colder days of the upcoming winter season, paired with a slight morning rain. After our arrival, two 991 Turbo S’s pulled in back to back, followed by a Cayman GT4, and a 997 GT3. We had a good mix of new and classic Porsches! A crowd favorite was the beautiful red 1964 356 Coupe. After meeting with my friend Zachary Walker, we started talking about Porsches and waiting for the 918 that was rumored to arrive. Neither Zachary nor I are PCA members, but we volunteered for this Tour to be co-drivers for Mark and Derrick Tate, respectively. I was impressed by all the varieties of Porsches in the parking lot. Right before we started the drivers’ briefing, the rumored 918 Spyder (with Weissach package) in Martini livery made the corner into the Grayson College parking lot. Immediately the crowd that was getting ready for the drivers’ briefing completely changed their focus to the beautiful 918 Spyder. The owner parked his moving artwork and people flocked around the car, including my friend Zachary with his Camera. Zachary was able to get breathtaking, wallpaper-worthy photographs. With the 918 counted in, we began with 97 cars and 171 people, making it the best-attended PCA Tour of the year. The group Leaders were Peter Wen, Derrick Tate, John Harvey, Tom Martin, Young Slack, Tom Gomer, Mark, and Bill Orr. Mark and I led the secondto-last group to leave. I was able to get some great pictures and videos before we set off. The weather was 6 December

Weissach Edition 918 (photo by Zachary Walker)

Photos contributed as noted which was also our designated rest stop. After a few great pictures, we started back up again over winding roads and more long straights just outside of Tioga and Valley View. White wooden fences lined the sides of these farm roads and gave me the feeling that we were miles from any downtown city area. It was very nice, quiet, and peaceful (other than the sound of the 911 of course). Leaving Sanger was my personal favorite point of the Tour, with sweeping corners, great straights, and beautiful homes with lots of land and endless views. The road that crosses the dam gave us great views of Lake Ray Roberts! We slowed down again heading into the small towns of Aubrey, Krugerville, Cross Roads, Oak Point, and Little Elm because the remaining portion of the Tour was more heavily populated. After 90.3 miles, the Tour ended at the Hula Hut Restaurant in Little Elm. The weather was perfect, there were beautiful cars everywhere, and we were right on Lewisville Lake. Hula Hut was the perfect destination with a massive parking lot and a great lake atmosphere!

crisp and warm enough to allow us to cruise with the windows down, so we enjoyed the start of what would be a great drive. We began our drive through Van Alstyne, where the roads were great but not exhilarating. This was more of just the beginning to the beautiful roads and scenery that would follow this town. Heading into Weston, we found ourselves on long straight farm-roads with some sweeping, wide corners and mostly open farmland scenery. The roads in this town were smooth, clear, and entertaining to say the least! Our next small town of Celina was where things slowed down, and we took several 90-degree turns through the downtown area. A few more long straights and sweeping turns later, we were Mark & Rose Gohlke’s stunning 356 Coupe in Pilot Point, (photo by Bill Orr)

Tech Session:

“Brake” the News!

By Michael Baynton, Region Tech Session Chair

I

t’s important to remember that purebred sports cars like Porsches are not just about “go.” In fact, one could argue that the “whoa” is an even more critical component of a performance car’s capabilities. Whether you are cruising to your local coffee hangout, enjoying a spirited drive on twisty back roads, or trying to find that last tenth on the track, having well-maintained brakes can often be the difference between enjoyment and panic. To learn more about the various components that make up a brake system, and to gain knowledge about the variety of options available on the consumer market, our most recent tech session on October 21 at Bennett Motor Werks sought to shed light on this complicated subject. Our generous host, Michael Bennett, presented an informative and comprehensive overview of common brake fluid options, brake pad and rotor choices, recommended replacement intervals, and even a discussion and demonstration on proper wheel torquing technique. His expansive and immaculate shop was a perfect venue for “brake school.” With over 50 Maverick Region members in attendance, Michael graciously answered a variety of questions and dispelled a lot of myths about brakes. In Michael measuring brake rotor wear particular, there was a lot

Autocross Series:

Photos by Bill Orr of discussion around the importance of replacing rotors vs. turning them for an extended service life. Attendees learned how to choose OEM vs. aftermarket components, and also how to properly upgrade a braking system (especially brake fluid) for track usage.

Interestingly, Michael had never owned a Porsche, even though he has worked on them (and other famous German brands) for over 25 years. He also sells cars, and on this particular day he was representing a gorgeous, low-mileage 996 for a client. Perfectly clean inside and out, it garnered a LOT of attention from our members that morning, with a lot of purchase contemplation evident in the hushed conversations. Well, Michael must have learned a bit from his guests about a smart Porsche purchase, because Michael himself bought that 996 a few days later. He’s now a proud Porsche owner and one of our newest Mav members. Thank you again and welcome, Michael!

The 2017 Season is Complete

he 2017 Maverick Region PCA / Equipe Rapide SCC Autocross season is behind us. For the most part, only a few course marker cones were sacrificed in ten events that averaged over 100 entries, who each got at least six runs on every course. That’s over 6,000 timed runs! By the end of the season, there were almost 400 participants, including 120 novices and 27 drivers in the special Porsche classes enjoying their cars at these exceptionally well-run autocross

Sacrifice to the gods of autocross

events. Ed Mayo, Julia Underwood, Doug Edney and Mike Syler earned points and participated in enough events to qualify for year-end awards. Nice driving! There will be an annual banquet after the holidays again this year where they will receive their awards. The final event of the year was also the Guns and Hoses Fund Raising Challenge with some local police and firefighters competing. Everyone had a good time at the popular Lone Star Park site and $5,000 was raised and donated to this worthy foundation. 7

Mavs & Mochas:

Nordstrom at Northpark Center

By Ginger Heuerman, Porsche 944 Featured Model Host

T

he November Mavs & Mochas venue was the parking area adjacent to Nordstrom at Northpark Center in Dallas. Nordstrom was a wonderful host and provided complimentary hand massages and mini-makeovers courtesy of their Beauty team for our female participants. In addition, they opened their Espresso Bar early and had plenty of seating inside for those that found it a little cold outside and provided a raffle for a His & Hers Fragrance Set valued at $350. The actual event featured the Porsche 944 model in celebration of 35 years since the original introduction. I was fortunate to be asked to drive Tom Leavitt’s 1983 model as he couldn’t attend. I loved it so much!

As usual, even though the event has a published start time of 8:30 am, when I arrived at 8:00 am, there were already over 70 Porsches in the lot! As the morning continued, we had more 944s show up that we were not aware had planned to attend, much to our shock and delight! It was awesome seeing all the 944s lined up

10 December

Photos by Andrew Barber

and seeing all the other Porsche models represented. By the end of the event we had a total of 30 Porsche 944s attend and a new record attendance of 156 Porsches in total! It was so majestic seeing them all lined up! From 1982 to Welcoming our Maverick members 1991, Porsche produced 163,192 of the highly re-engineered 944 model series. As with the earlier 928 and 924 models, the 944 was a front engine, rear transaxle car. Available in coupé or cabriolet body styles with either naturally aspirated or turbo-charged engines, this production total made the 944 the most successful car line in Porsche’s history until the introduction of the Boxster and 997 Carrera. The iconic sleek coolness of a Porsche 944 is so classic. It is amazing that there have been over 295 movies and TV shows with 944s in them. I even saw one in the 2017 movie Get Out and in Stranger Things 2 on Netflix. For the Porsche trivia buffs, 14,633 Porsche 944s were produced in 1983. In 1984, the year the movie Sixteen Candles came out, that number skyrocketed to 26,539 making it the highest production year. The following year The 1 of 1 Maverick quilt the number produced stayed high with 23,720 produced, large part thanks to Sixteen Candles. Finally, non-perishable food was collected to donate to the North Texas Food Bank. Thank you to all that brought donations. The quilt that Ginger Heuerman made to be raffled off at the Founders Day Gala on December 2 was also on display for everyone to see and purchase tickets. There is still time to get your tickets. You can go to http://mav.pca.org/shopping/raffle/ and purchase the tickets online there. It is $20 per ticket or 3 for $50. It is a 1 of 1 quilt made especially for our Maverick Region.

Kruder’s Cars & Conversations By Bill Kruder

L

ast month I introduced you to Jack and M.L., beginning with how they met at a party to how M.L. introduced Jack to racing. Keep in mind this was 1983-84, two guys from small towns, having the time of their lives racing some of the best circuits in America. Little did they ever expect where this was going to take them. So here is the “rest of the story” in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you . . .

Photos courtesy of Jack Griffin

BK: So Jack, you were part of this team? M.L.: No, Jack and I had been racing together, and I just thought, heck, if you would like to come with us, why not? Jack Griffin: Yes, M.L. just said “Hey, we are going to Le Mans, so how ‘bout you come along and you can hang out in the pits with us.” He added “. . . be sure to bring your driving suit so you will look like you fit in.” M.L.: Well actually I was thinking if he looked the part, he might have a shot with the girls (laughM.L. So now that I bring that up, let’s get started; did you plan on one day racing there? M.L.: No I never dreamed of driving Le Mans, but as luck would have it, Union Oil and Buick approached us to run the March/ Buick at Le Mans, as we were an American team with an American engine and would be the only team running an American engine in the race. BK: So I’ve heard Davidson Real Estate was involved with your Le Mans effort in 1983. M.L: Oh yes, Davidson Real Estate was one of our primary sponsors, and that company as well as the race were promoted on billboards in Dallas and in the press. That year the Starck Club was opening in Dallas, and Davidson rented the club for a send-off party for us to go to Le Mans. It was quite a social function and a good send off for us to try and conquer Le Mans.

M.L.: Jack and I co-drove with Christian Bussi in the ‘85 24 Hours of Le Mans, and we had a suspension failure in the fifth hour of the race. The left front suspension broke loose from the chassis in the right hand corner after the Mulsanne Straight. I was able to get the car back to the pits, but the damage was not able to be repaired so we were out of the race. And there you have it, two guys whose paths never ordinarily would have passed, but pass they did. Jack, who only wanted to “try” racing at a DE, and M.L., whose goal was to finish one IMSA race in 1977 and would walk away a happy man. I think we could agree that this might be the true meaning of “Driving Friendships.”

Book Review: By Tom Martin

Steve McQueen in Le Mans

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s been 45 years since Steve McQueen’s film opus to motor racing, Le Mans, first hit the silver screen, resplendent in all its anamorphic Panavision glory. Despite being panned by Hollywood and the mainstream movie-going public, the film was universally accepted by dedicated motor racing fans as a firstrate account of the legendary 24 Heures du Mans endurance race. Some say it is the greatest motor racing movie of all time. I tend to agree. If nothing else, it just may be the best Porsche commercial ever produced. In 2013, Sandro Garbo and his team of artists embarked on a mission to recreate McQueen’s Le Mans vision as a graphic novel. In this respect, they have met and exceeded their goal. The finished work, Steve McQueen in Le Mans (Tribute Edition - Part 1) is a masterpiece of collaborative artwork, where racing cars and action are presented in a stunning collage of outstanding tableaux. The graphic novel, like the film, is basically a retelling of the 1970 24-hour contest between the Porsche 917K and Ferrari 512LM entries, contested by both the factory and private teams. Unlike the film, this tome preludes with a recounting of events leading up to the start of the previous year’s event in 1969, the last time the drivers sprinted to their cars to start the race. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the numbers of the cars to the colors and designs of the helmets of the drivers lining

up for the start. One can discern actual racing veterans Jo Siffert and Jo Bonnier, as well as fictional drivers Piero Belghetti (who perished early in the film’s flashback), Erich Stahler, and Michael Delaney (McQueen). Printed on high quality 0.15mm stock, the 64 page volume contains over 300 full-color illustrations that guarantee to delight the reader’s eye. The Ferrari red and Gulf Porsche blue and orange hues are especially vibrant. The film “Le Mans” remains popular even today as a historically accurate depiction of its era, focusing on racing at the expense of both plot and dialogue. In fact, there is no audible dialogue from any of the main characters within the first 37 minutes of the film. The graphic novel, however, injects dialogue that is only implied in the film. This may be because subtle nuances displayed in the movie that would not require dialogue could not be reproduced in a static illustration. To the uninitiated, this may be necessary, but like the film, the plot and dialogue are expendable, if at all necessary. The real star of the volume is the breathtaking artwork.

There are more than a few variances from the original “plot,” most not worth mentioning. But it should be noted that English was evidently not the primary language of the original writer of the novel. For example, “laps” are referred to as “rounds.” But let’s get back to the artwork, and give credit where credit is due. Artists Florian Afflerbach, Jared Barel, Julien Dejeu, Thomas Lebeltel, Guillaume Lopez, and Pierre Ménard have created some of the most vivid images of racing cars of the era at speed. The

Le Mans Movie “Extras” from Tom If you’d like more background on the film Le Mans, there’s plenty of print content out there. One could literally spend a small fortune pursuing every available tome. Two recommended volumes are written by renowned photographer, filmmaker, author and competitive Porsche driver Michael Keyser. A French Kiss with Death Behind Le Mans: The Film in Photographs On a final note, the film Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans is making the rounds these days, but I cannot recommend it, as (in my opinion) it is a tawdry and plodding account of the making of the film. But that’s me, and I’m just sayin’ . . .

nighttime and dawn images are the most impressive. The rest of the artwork is merely superb. This volume makes a superlative coffee table book, provided no one ever drinks coffee on that particular table. As a collectible, it is a must for any Porsche fan, or any devotee of the film. And if one is considering this novel as a holiday gift for their favorite Porschephile, it’s certainly a no-brainer. Part 1 of the graphic novel ends with the famous scene where Delaney’s 917K is destroyed against the Armco barriers after Indianapolis corner. Garbo Studios hints that Part 2 will be released sometime in 2018. What will happen next? Hang onto your seats for the exciting finale!

Can you name the movies that featured these Porsche cars? Answers can be found at the bottom of the previous column.

Lube for Thought:

Lubrication, Part 3

By Mike Mahoney, Region Concours Chair

S

o far we’ve covered engine oil, additives, why you need to change your oil, with viscosity being the single most important factor in selecting a lubricant. In this installment let’s discuss synthetics and gear oils. Synthetic lubricants have become mainstream in recent years for one simple reason: synthetic lubricants are the best technology out there today for lubrication. As with most things, there are lots of opinions. I’m not going to get into the various opinions here; however, my opinion after 36 years in the oil business is that synthetic lubricants are far and away the best choice for your Porsche. By the way, Porsche thinks so too! I will add one caveat: your vintage Porsche may be the one exception. Mainly because of those nasty leaks that pop up now and again, predominantly in our vintage cars. It’s just a waste of money if that expensive oil is just going to leak out. Also, there are many mechanics that feel synthetic lubricants cause leaks in older cars simply because of the technology in machining that existed at the time of manufacture. This could be debated for years, and there are always exceptions to the rule. When in doubt consult your trusted Porsche specialist.

Newer Porsches use synthetic oil

20 December

So what is a synthetic lubricant? Synthetic lubricants can begin as a chemically modified petroleum molecule, or they can be synthesized from other raw materials. There are various categories of base stock, which is the building block of a lubricant. A common and very effective base stock is called PAO or poly-alpha-olefin, which is a polymer made by polymerizing an alpha-olefin. But I digress . . . . These are considered group IV base stocks and are some of the more common synthetic lubricants. Group V are synthetic base stocks that are 100% chemically made, and for the most part, used in applications other than automotive. The simplest way I can explain why synthetics last longer, improve fuel mileage, and extend the life of metal components, is that all the molecules are of similar shape. In a mineral or conventional hydrocarbon-based lubricant, the molecules may be round, but they are not the same size. So it may have basketball, baseball, and golf-ball sized molecules -- all round, just different sizes. In a synthetic, all of the molecules are, let’s say, the size of baseballs. This reduces friction. This in essence is one of the main reasons synthetics perform so well. In addition, through the chemical process, there are no impurities that can contribute to the degradation of oil. Again, when in doubt, consult your Porsche specialist.

Next I want to touch on gear oils. We have gear lubricants in various components on our cars, with the gearbox, transaxle, and differential being the main areas. Gear oils are different from engine oils insofar as they are not subjected to the same contamination as engine oil. And because of that, they don’t require the same amount or types of additives. They will have extreme pressure and anti-wear additives, but not detergents or acid neutralizers. So without contamination or heavy additives, the oil lasts longer. Gear oils are typically of higher viscosity to counteract the heat, and are also multi-viscosity to aid in cold startup. In addition, for the most part, the gear oils in your car are all synthetic. This allows them to stay in service much longer. This concludes our series on lubricants. I hope you now have a better understanding of the role oil plays in your car.

Look for information about an upcoming Tech Session on lubricants that will be held on January 27 at Park Place Porsche. Additional information will be posted on our Facebook page and sent to you via direct email.

averick Region Porsche enthusiasts swept through 74 miles of spooky roads from Allen to McKinney participating in the “Broom Ride Road Rally.” The weather was perfect for this October 28 celebration of fall and friendship that marked the region’s third annual Halloween Rally, organized by Don Sebert and George Luxbacher. Club Race Recap: By Glen Gatlin Jr.

M

otorSport Ranch was established in 1996 by owner and founder Jack Farr. Now over 20 years later, it continues to turn out top notch drivers that dominate various classes throughout the region. There were several points championships decided at this event. This year’s race was run on the 1.7 mile configuration. Track sections include Ricochet, a high speed off-camber downhill section that’s blind on entry. Tombstone, on the back side, is a long tripleapex, high speed left hander. Big Bend is a high speed left turn leading onto the main straight. Rattlesnake differentiates itself as a very significant braking section after the high speed main straight, turning right and uphill into a tight twisty section. Notable finishes included Glenn Wiedenbeck out of Sulphur Springs, TX. Glenn beat local Dallas racer David Hodges for the Spec 996 Championship, coming in first in both the points sprint race, where David DNF’d (did not finish), and then again in the Enduro, where they both went the full distance. Glenn echoed many racers’ comments with “Great race, great place,

great hospitality, more people need to make this event next year.” Jeannie said it best when describing her husband. ”Glenn goes all in with the things he loves and is a machine when it comes to racing. Two years in a row National champion. I’m a super proud wife!” Spec Boxster brought great racing with top tier talent, including Livio Galanti, the new owner of another local track, Eagles Canyon Raceway. Livio finished first in both the Red group Sprint and Red Group Enduro. Livio and his wife Paula have big plans for Eagles Canyon; they are making numerous upgrades including amenities, grinding down and patching rough areas, and the swankiest brake markers ever! Paula Galanti said they hope to attract more women participants in Drivers’ Education, car control clinics, and racing. Our region appreciates the passion this couple displays not only for each other, but for Porsche Club and gearheads across the board! Second place in Spec Boxster sprint was Brett Gabriel, followed very closely by John Gladwill. In the Red Group Enduro they swapped spots with John edging out Brett for second spot. It was a very close race across the class with notable performances by Bernard Nussbaumer, Denis Boulle, and Keith Olcha. Way to go Spec Boxster! This class is great to watch and one of the most closely contested nationally. There was some great racing in 944 SP1, with Steve Coomes winning the championship this year with a win in SP1. Steve won the Sprint and Pat Heptig won the Enduro. It was really fun watching these masters work their cars to the limit, literally the On the Spec 996 podium: whole race -- wow!! Glenn Wiedenbeck ,David Hodges

In GTC4, new PCA racer Barry Bell excelled, winning both the Sprint and Enduro in that class. Joe Still from Huntsville, AL (Heart O’Dixie Region) cemented his GTC4 National podium finish with two solid second place results in both the Sprint and Enduro, utilizing dual support from local shop ToppRacing and his home shop Goldcrest Motorsports. Joe also came in for a tie finish for longest tow award against both Rocky Mountain Region PCA’ers Walt Fricke and GTA1 National winner Dale Hartzell.

Barry Bell, Lisa Bell, and chief engineer of Quirt Racing, Quirt himself! Lisa had the quote of the weekend… ”Love Family, Love Life!”

Notable quotes: Veteran PCA racer Steve Kent brilliantly stated ”It’s still not the cars, it’s the people!” National Scrutineer John Rickard: ”It’s amazing how talented these fields are. The racing is neck and neck, yet my job has been easy.” Thanks to National staff: Steward Mike Hoke, 15-year Timing and Scoring veteran Michael Wingfield, and Scrutineer Jeff Burger. Thanks again! Great race, great people, great event! 29

Destination Restoration: By Ash Seidl-Staley

W

hen one thinks of restoration, one usually thinks of a barnyard find that gets completely redone, or a scrapyard junkie that receives a $30,000-plus make over; anything that could hypothetically roll across a Barrett-Jackson auction block really. But, like I’ve stated previously, restoration can and should also mean proper upkeep and regular maintenance of your vehicle. Restoring and prolonging the longevity of your Porsche is in the best interests of you, your vehicle, and ultimately, your wallet. There are not that many of us that have the time or the resources to restore the high-ticket show stoppers, but what we can do is replace air filters, change the oil, and update/ restore ignition components. I was beyond excited when we finally signed the deal on the house in Forney. Not only do I have a roof over my head to work, but that Texas sun can no longer unremittingly scorch the luscious red paint of my Porsches! Although she sits solo—the 914 is still parked in my mother’s garage—the 944 absolutely loves her “garage queen” moniker. And considering my work life has kicked into high gear, both cars will most likely remain on classic or vintage storage status for the foreseeable future. But don’t fret Mavs -- this is where proper maintenance and restoration falls into play.

Porsche 944 - Garage Royalty

Mavericks, I’ve got a noise...

Photos courtesy of the Author

While stored - even in winter - I run, drive, or at least start the 944. I try to keep the procedure to once every two to three weeks, with every other start-up leading to a spin around the block. Checking gauges, fluid levels, electrical operations, and later, the all-important oil is one Chirping sound emanates from the front of my favorite and rear of the engine compartment things to do with my cars. I also love - it’s a bittersweet love by the way - to listen for noises like pings, knocks, scrapes, and thuds. This past Saturday I heard such a noise immediately upon the 944’s start-up. At first it sounded like a squeak of a wheel. Not like a pulley’s shimmy and squeak, or the start of a belt squeal, but like a double chirp. While under the hood sometimes it sounds as if the intermittent chirping is coming from the front nose cone area, but it can also sound as though it’s originating from the brake booster area. From the cab, the sound really seems to come from the heater core. The chirping echoes out of the air vent system, almost like a budgie is stuck somewhere in my dash! Now I’ve been stumped many times, but this one has really got me. I mean I’m not an avian enthusiast, and the car, despite the noise, is running phenomenally. It gets stranger: as the car warms up, the chirp occurs randomly, but, once at operating temperature, the chirping is less frequent. The noise occurs throughout all the thirty minutes of the car’s run time, and not once am I able to pinpoint its origin. Now, as far as I can tell, all operations of the vehicle feel dialed in. No errors to report, other than that I need some air in my tires, and that I have a budgie in my heater core. Now here is the really really weird part: after a tenminute stint the next day, the chirp died away before operating temp was reached, and it did not resurface throughout the remaining twenty minutes of idle time back at home. Like I said, stumped. I either need to research “ghost chirping in a 944,” or start looking around my block for lost bird fliers. Wish me luck and Wrench on Mavs! 31

Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

W

ell, you are now on the final lap of 2017! I hope that you, your family, and your Porsche(s) have had a healthy, wealthy, and wise trip around the sun these past 365 days. With 2018 just around the corner, it’s important to start the new year with an enthusiastic attitude and a willingness to work with whatever comes your way. With the new year and its accompanying resolutions in mind, please take some time and consider how you can contribute your time and talents to the Maverick Region in support of your fellow members. Keep in mind that all of the Porsche-based experiences we offer to our membership are fueled entirely by volunteers. We actually can use help in almost every event we offer. Here’s a short list of opportunities to help you consider where you would most like to help. On the social side: • Parking assistants for our monthly Mavs & Mochas • Coordinating and hosting our monthly evening socials • Providing help with set-up and member welcoming at our large annual events such as Founders Day and the All Member Party

36 December

On the driving side: • Being a drive leader or sweeper during our PCA Tours events • Assisting with our Rally events On the competitive side: • Participating in our autocross events • Participating or instructing in our High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) events No, that’s not a complete list of volunteer opportunities, but it gives you an idea of the varying events we offer to our members. For more information on these and others, email volunteers@mavpca.org. Finally, I am in need of a member willing to take over the editor duties for Slipstream. Ideally, your prior experience would include desktop publishing and familiarity with Adobe software such as InDesign and Photoshop. Please contact me directly at editor@ mavpca.org and I’ll be happy to provide you more details and discuss the actual tasks associated with publishing our newsletter each month. I can guarantee your 2018 will be enjoyable if you volunteer to give back to our Maverick Region. Carpe Viam!
