SPROCKETS: A Look Back by David Robertson, Region President Here we are at the end of the year once again. The year 2019 seemed to fly by, and the fact that it is December already has The Maverick Region has had an taken me by incredible year, and there is a great surprise. My term deal of momentum heading into as Maverick 2020. Just a few years ago it would Region President will have been hard to imagine that we come to an end would have over 3000 members! on December Soon after Our membership continues to 31. I joined the grow, and the activities planned Maverick region reflect the excitement and growth in 2012, I was immediately of the club. impressed with the time and effort that everyone put into making this club a success and wanted to get involved. My wife Tracy and I started volunteering at several events and found that it was a lot of fun! We quickly met a lot of our members and through events like Schnell Fest, Palooza, and Boxtoberfest, we started meeting PCA members from all over the country. We started attending and volunteering at Autocrosses, Tours, and Socials, and really realized what a great group of people we have in the club. Tracy soon became the Social Chair and I started attending board meetings with her to see how the mechanics of the organization worked. I became Vice President of the board in 2016 and later that year, due to an illness, I stepped in for the President. Fast-forward to December 2019 and it has been an amazing three and a half years as the President of the Maverick Region.

Throughout my time on the board we have seen tremendous growth, revitalization of existing programs, and popular new events that experience phenomenal attendance. All the credit goes to our event chairs and other volunteers that put many hours into making existing programs better and coming up with new activities to keep our members engaged and excited to participate. I mention all of this to say that even though I’m leaving the board, I still look forward to volunteering within the club in the future. The Maverick Region only exists due to the time and enthusiasm of our volunteers, and I am confident in saying that we have some of the best!

MAV OF THE MONTH: Bill Middleton If you have been to a Maverick event, then it is probable that Bill has taken your picture. He attends most of our events with camera in hand and posts great photos shortly afterwards. In addition to volunteering for the Maverick Region, Bill has been very closely associated with the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House for many years and was instrumental in their remodel during the mid-2000s. The Huffaker-Hughes Hope House is one of the Maverick Region’s primary charities and Bill continues to work closely with that organization today. Thank you, Bill, for your volunteer efforts within the Maverick Region and very important work with the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House! 2 November

Reflections on PCA Palooza by Tom Stout While cruising westbound on I-40 back home to the great State of Texas, my wife Hayley and I had time to reflect on our rookie weekend at PCA Palooza. It all started a couple days before, charging through the rain in the middle of a pack of 18 Maverick cars led by our fearless and intrepid leader Frank Briggs. We arrived in Eureka Springs just in time to see the clouds part and a spectacular sunset in the west over the Ozarks. The next day brought great weather and a “spirited” drive through the hills. Afterwards we enjoyed meeting Porsche folks and their wheels from around the country, along with all the swag tables at Palooza HQ. We felt right at home and welcome from the start. A night on the town enjoying live local music with fellow Mavericks followed, probably not to be forgotten by the participants. Great fun. The next day found us enjoying a relaxing walkabout around downtown Eureka Springs, followed by a meandering Porsche parade tossing candy to the smiling local kids.

6 November

photos by Debi Kruder, Paul Moseley and Jimmy Gallegos Wind that day up with a huge car show, and the evening closing banquet, and that’s a full but amazing day. Everyone involved, from the organizers to the participants to all the local residents, could not have been nicer. Surrounded by Porsche cars, people, and swag was super. For me, the highlight was introducing my silver 2007 997S to its “grandfather,” a gorgeous silver 1977 911S, and then to its “great grandfather,” a pristine 1965 silver 356. For me it made the legacy of these magnificent machines personal. We will definitely be returning next year, but maybe then with Hayley’s Boxster . . . after all, we may have some different “relatives” to discover! Below clockwise: Welcome to Palooza, you’re in good company. I’m told the guy in that in the ‘68 (the middle one) can drive. Paul Moseley shoots when he drives? Beautiful scenery though. The Hoffman on the square. Right: Sights from Eureka Springs Arkansas as seen by some of our members. It seems Mark Palmer has meet a new friend, either that or he is asking for directions from a local. Mavericks showed some rare cars too.

PCA Palooza: 2019 by Jennifer Parma After seeing some of the Mavericks post pictures of last years’ trip to PCA Palooza, I knew I had to go this year! I was invited to caravan with a group of 18 other P-cars on the Thursday before the Palooza weekend. What a great way to start out Palooza, driving to Eureka Springs, looking at all of that gorgeous eye candy along the way! Once I arrived, I picked up my registration packet and bought some really some cool Palooza swag, including a Porsche Motorsport jacket I have been wanting! I immediately started seeing other familiar faces from the Maverick region. Over the long weekend, there were lunches, dinners, happy hours, and live music late into the nights with my fellow Mavs which made the entire time even more fun! On Friday morning, I drove the “Dam Farmer’s Daughter” tour, a 74-mile drive on those beautiful twisties adorned with fall color. I am not as experienced as some of the drivers on those twisty roads, so I felt a bit intimidated, but with each turn, my driving and

photos by Scott Kellogg, Scott Kerfoot and Landon Stogner speed improved. Definitely good practice for our future local drives here! Saturday was filled with another drive, the Parade of Porsche Power, the Shine & Show, and the Banquet. The parade was not only a visual experience, but, oh . . . the sounds!! Whoa! I heard one man say along the parade route, “Look at her driving by herself . . . good for her!” It was then that I became overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude at how fortunate I am to be able to drive a beautiful Porsche, attend events like these and be a part of such a wonderful club. I have made so many great friends since attending my very first Maverick event just a little over a year ago and I am thankful to have had this experience with a lot of them at PCA Palooza! Eureka Springs this time of year is stunning with the fall color at its peak. Throw a few hundred plus beautiful Porsches in that little town, and I was in heaven! I am looking forward to next year’s PCA Palooza! 7

Park Place Luxury and Supercar Showcase by Olga Taylor Park Place promised “the fastest cars” at the Luxury & Supercar Showcase, and the vehicles were spectacular. Food and drink were abundant—now enough about that event stuff. Okay, so here’s what it was like for us Mavericks. Pre-dawn, Mavericks gathered in the parking lot to organize. Intense; it involved “fancy parking” and “refancy parking” because Scott Kellogg was serious about the procession—no car was to be out of order! A smiling Mike Mahoney did the QC check and we relaxed. Then, coolest of the cool, our parade of 30 Porsches

by Jennifer Parma This was my first year to attend the Park Place Luxury & Supercar Showcase, and what an experience it was! The cars were beautifully displayed on the fairway and I felt like I had died and gone to heaven! All of those stunning specimens of new, classic, or somewhere in between - all in one place. Wow! The Car Club Expo was such a treat, seeing beauties from area clubs represented by Lamborghini, Jaguar, and Ferrari, just to name a few.... and Porsche represented the PCA beautifully in true Maverick fashion. Way to go, Mavs! Of 8 November

photos provided by Michael Durovick, Mike Mahoney, Peter Wen drove to the Car Club Showcase area. Not only did we represent Porsche, the Maverick Region was “representative” of a car club--we dominated in number and cachet. Every Porsche was represented. Beyond the Car Club Showcase, 13 Porsches were featured on the main show field. Once set up, it was such a blast to ogle over all the cars. Most of us enjoyed chatting each other up all day— the suite, Porsche Pavilion, or out and about. A great day and lots of fun. Porsche, Porsche, Porsche.

course, I loved each and every one of the Porsches on display, but also being a Jaguar owner, I was excited to see a vintage ‘54 Jaguar XK120 as well as the XJR-15 and XJ 220. I am also very fond of classic Corvettes, especially the Stingray coupe, and there were a handful of beautiful ones on display! There were more than just cars on display. The tents provided fabulously prepared samplings of food, drinks, various vendors and even a fashion show. But, it was HOT! And, in the heat of the day after viewing cars, I enjoyed cooling off and visiting with my Porsche friends in the private suite. We all love the Porsches in the group, but in the end it truly is about the wonderful people who drive them.

The 2019 High Desert Holiday, sponsored by the Arizona Outlaws 356 Club, was a spectacular success! This year, the holiday was held in Flagstaff, AZ, October 2 through October 6. A plethora of events was available for all who attended the holiday. Flagstaff, known as the city of seven wonders, was a perfect location for Porsche enthusiasts to explore numerous natural wonders and to learn more about the history of our country. The Grand Canyon, San Francisco Peaks, Sunset Crater, Wupatki, Walnut Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Coconino National Forest, and the Petrified Forest National Park all were

within 120 miles of Flagstaff. The breathtaking beauty and history of these locations were awe-inspiring. The Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff was also an important stop for those interested in learning more about telescopes and our amazing universe. Porsche 356 enthusiasts also had an opportunity to go to three different tech sessions: one covered engine building, another gave details on a 356 restoration, and a third demonstrated interior upholstery methods. A Hopi dance presentation along with an

The People’s Choice Concours Car Show culminated in prizes presented during the Awards Banquet, which also included the keynote speaker, Renee Brinkerhoff of Valkyrie Racing. A Swap Meet concluded the holiday. Thank you Arizona Outlaws 356 Club for doing such a great job in putting all of this together. A special thanks goes to David Gill, Steve Proctor, and Scott Evans, the event organizers, for their many hours of hard work. Eleven cars from the Fort Worth/Dallas-based Tub Club attended this event, and we all had a great time!

Mavs & Mochas: Tactical Fleet by Raj Gill The October Mavs & Mochas fell on the same day as the OU vs. Longhorns football game. Although it’s traditionally a heated rivalry, the morning started off quite cold. As the sun rose, it became the perfect weather for a Porsche gathering! The venue was located at a new place which Mavs & Mochas had never previously been. Tactical Fleet is a new car dealership located in Addison. With plenty of space and lots of Porsche inventory, it made for a fantastic location for us

photos provided by Bill Kruder Mavs. The owners, Chris Barta and Jason Putnam, went above and beyond in catering breakfast and coffee for everyone. Mi Cocina was their caterer, who was great!

We celebrated 30 years of Porsche GT cars. Out of a total of 125+ Porsches, over 35 GT cars attended. A great turn out. Other than car sales, Tactical Fleet also

offers services such as paint correction, detailing, paint protection film, and car storage options. They also have an open door policy. Go check them out!

Autocross Series: Event 9 at Lone Star Park by Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair Event 9 had 21 Porsche drivers out of 79 entries. That’s 27% of the field! Igor Tulandin continued his winning streak in Class P0 with his Cayenne GTS. He was running times that put him ahead of the Boxsters and Caymans, except for the GT4 driven by Wendy Shoffit. Very impressive driving in an SUV on an autocross course. At the final event of the season, the Guns and Hoses challenge, the Police and Firemen will be trying to best him with their SUVs. That event was Sunday, November 3 at Lone Star Park, Grand Prairie, TX. Clay Perrine brought his just-completed 914/6 GT 4.0 to compete in class P6. You read that right: 4.0-liter 964-based six cylinder engine. Great sounds and looks awesome! He is having to re-learn how to drive it but will be a threat when he does. Class P1 had six entries for another air-cooled 911 and 914 battle, with three of each. Mark’s 914 pulled the win, followed by Carey Spreen in his 911SC, Ed Mayo in his 911S, and Sigrid in her 914. William Mayo won class P3 in his blue Boxster. Mark Schnoerr in his 914, Carey Spreen in his 911 and Igor Tulandin thundering through the course in his Cayenne GTS

In Class P4, Alec Baker pulled a first over Russ Rosenberg in his newly-acquired 996 Cabriolet. Class P5 was a big fight right down to the last runs between Owen Coulman in his 996 GT3 and Wendy Shoffit in her GT4 Cayman. Owen put in a real flyer to win the class and be quickest Porsche, ahead of the winning 914 and the GT4. Anna Zimmerman and Florian Steinberg were visiting from Germany and drove the Schnoerr 993. Anna has a bit more seat time in that car and pulled out the win over her boyfriend. Performance Index-adjusted top Porsche times were Mark’s 914, Owen’s GT3, and Wendy’s GT4 respectively. In Ladies overall Performance Index, Wendy was second and Sigrid was third in her 914.

Maverick Marktpreis is proudly sponsored by:

Maverick Marktpreis: 911 Holiday Shopping List by Peter Wen It’s time. You have dreamed about this day for what seemed like decades. You worked hard. You raised a family. Now it’s time for your reward. For this holiday edition of Marktpreis, we feature three great generations of 911 to put on your shopping list. For your hard earned money, you can’t go wrong with these beauties. Old School: 911 Carrera (’84-’89, Coupe, $25k-$60k) Classic 911 looks with a powerful 3.2L engine and a smooth G50 transmission, the second generation 911 offers great value compared to the OG, long-hood 911. These Carreras are the best of the impact-bumper generation. #SaveTheWhaletails

The Last Airbender: 993 (’95-’97, Coupe, $45k-$55k) The 993 is the poster child of the Porsche bubble. It led the air-cooled valuation hysteria that peaked in 2016. Average price has since fallen by about 20%. With its classic Porsche good looks and modern performance, it is one of the most desirable 911 generation. #LastAircooled Modern Classic: 997.2 S (’09-’11, Coupe, $45k-$60k) The 997.2 generation is the Goldilocks of modern Porsches. It’s not too big and not too small. It’s not too sterile with nanny aids and it’s not so antiquated that you have to worry about an impromptu drag race at a stop light. Daily driver, track toy, or a cross-country road trip? Check, check, and check. The 997.2 911 just feels right! #BestGeneration

Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder Well, as is the case, this one was a pretty random meeting. As many of you know, our member Bill Bradley coordinates a Friday morning coffee meet in Flower Mound aka FloMo. Well I don’t get over there very often, but several months ago I drove over to join the group of eight to twelve attending. As I sat down I noticed this young man wearing this spiffy newsboy hat, so I reached across the table and introduced myself. Within minutes we were talking about the club and he’s offering up ideas for the club, such as do we ever have a blood drive or do we ever celebrate our veterans. It didn’t take long to realize we had someone that was all about people. And for the record, we are scheduling a blood drive for this spring, and we will have celebrated our Maverick Vets by the time you read this.

I retired from that job in September of this year but am now employed by Lockheed-Martin on the same F-35 program. BK: So I understand you are an Air Force veteran. Is that what took you from La Porte? CA: Matter of fact it did. It seemed everyone I knew was joining the Navy after high school. BK: But you joined the Air Force? CA: I did. We had a Navy recruiting office in town, so that’s why I guess so many guys signed up. A friend of mine who was a year older joined the

So here is the next in my series of “conversations” I would like to share with you: Carl Adee, member since 2019, Owner 2006 Boxster S Bill Kruder: So are you Carl Adee with Noah originally from here? Carl Adee: No, I grew up in a small Air Force. On one of his trips home, town: La Porte, Indiana. It’s about 40 he said “Come on let’s go see the Air minutes west of South Bend. I didn’t Force recruiter. You don’t want to move away until after high school; be stuck on some sub or ship.” So, most of my family is still there. we went to see them. As here and was assigned to Lockheedthings turned out I graduated, and Martin and was retiring, so he told weeks later I was off to San Antonio me I should apply for the position, for basic training, then on to Wichita which was part of the F-35 program. do something with your hands, you will always have a job. With that in mind I became an aircraft mechanic working on F-15, F-16, F-22, and F-35 fighter engines. BK: So did you end up getting moved around a lot? CA: Yes and no; my first assignment was Luke Air Force base in Glendale Arizona, about 15-20 minutes west of Phoenix. I spent some time in Las Vegas and then Delaware, where I did work on the big C5 transport engines. I also spent about a year in Korea. I had some deployments as well, including in 2002, where I was part of Gulf War II (Iraqi Freedom). As it turned out I was there for about 190 days. BK: I understand you just retired; aren’t you are awfully young to be retired? CA: Well in the armed forces you can retire after 20 years of active duty. For me it was 20 years and 3 months (smiling). And for the record I’m 38 (laughing). BK: And you are married? CA: Yes. I have been married to Sonia for 14 years and we have two kids: Noah is 7 and Olivia is 1. BK: So how did you and Sonia meet? CA: Well it was pretty random. I was on leave and kind of vacationing in Las Vegas and as it turned out so was she. It was Labor Day weekend and we were at the Ghostbar at the Palms Hotel. We ran into each other and we just started talking about our love for the Chicago Cubs and hung out the rest of the weekend. As it turned out she was from Naperville, a suburb of Chicago, and I was from about 90 minutes away in La Porte.

BK: Well that’s a small world. How did you both manage things with you being in Glendale? CA: Well I guess she kind of liked me (laughing) so she would come visit me or I would go there. Then we spent that Christmas Eve with her family and Christmas Day we spent with mine; this was 2003. BK: I understand there was a strange turn of events before you got married? CA: Well kind of. We went to Chicago for Valentine’s Day and I proposed to her. I no sooner got back to Glendale and I had orders sending me to Korea. Needless to say we weren’t expecting that but it all worked out and we were married in July of 2005 in Chicago. BK: Ok let’s talk cars. What was your first car? CA: It was a 1981 Jaguar XJ6. I found it at this place called Lemon Lot, where guys would just buy and sell cars from this random lot.

BK: So how did you end up in the Porsche world? CA: Easy. When I was about 7 years old my uncle, who’s 11 years older, always let me hang around with him. Well one day he came over and gave me this cool picture of a 944 and I loved it. Matter of fact I still have the picture and just recently gave it to Noah. BK: So first Porsche? CA: I’m driving it. We bought our 2006 Boxster about nine months ago.

for. Well about 12 days later they called me and said “we have one you need to see.” So we drove over and it was this Silver on Terracotta. Sonia said “this is the one,” and the rest is history (laughing). Well as usual I always walk away surprised at what chances life brings us in meeting people when we just stop or are stopped to say hello. It doesn’t matter if you are an attendee or a chairperson - it’s the people; we call that Driving Friendships.

BK: And why this one? CA: Well I was planning on retiring and wanted to get myself a retirement gift. I started reading Excellence magazine and really studied it, deciding that the Boxster was it. We looked at one, a 2008 Boxster RS 60 in orange; we took it for a test drive and Sonia knew this wasn’t the car. We then went to Porsche Grapevine and I told them what I was looking

Maverick Drivers’ Education Series: October and November Recap by Renee Hayden, Region DE Chair On October 19 and 20, the Maverick Region’s DE program was at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur for our second event on the new 1.65-mile short course. Everyone had fun and we are acclimating well to the new facility. Like all our DE events, we drove parade laps at lunch time benefiting the Patriot PAWS charity. The highlight of the event came on Sunday, when Eagles Canyon offered to let us drive the parade laps not only in the clockwise or opposite direction but gave us access to drive the entire 2.7-mile course. I believe we were the first organization to get this opportunity. When we announced the change to the full 2.7-mile course, many of our Drivers and Coaches headed for their cars! Their generous donations to Patriot PAWS totaled $440. Thank you for your donations, and thank you to Eagles Canyon for helping make it happen! As stated on the Patriot PAWS website: “The mission of Patriot PAWS is to train and provide service dogs of the highest quality at no cost to disabled American veterans and others with mobile disabilities and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in order to help restore their physical and emotional independence.” Our sponsor for the October event weekend was Autobahn Porsche in Fort Worth. John Hamilton is not only Autobahn’s representative, but he is a long time Maverick Region Driving Coach and Club member. Thank you to John and Autobahn for your continued support for our DE events. Below is a picture of one of our Team Leaders, Steve Jackson, with Drivers Chuck Furlich and John Hamilton, as Chuck receives his promotion to our Blue Solo Run Group. Congratulations Chuck! Congratulations to all the Drivers who received promotions during this event and the November event too. 10. We enjoyed absolutely beautiful weather for the weekend. We have not driven the 1.7-mile track in the clockwise direction in many years, so the new track direction was like an entirely new track for many of our drivers and some of our coaches. We would like to thank all of the drivers and coaches who helped make the weekend great as well as the Maverick Region PCA Club Racers who sponsored the event. We also welcomed Hart Photography as a new sponsor for our breakfast treats. Hart Photography is our long time event photographer who captures great images of your car while on track. You can see and purchase your images for this event on his website at: https://www.hart-photography.com/events/maverick-regionpca-motorsport-ranch-november-9th-10th-2019/.

That’s all of our events for this year, but we are already working to finalize next year’s event calendar. The entire calendar will be posted on our website when it is complete. In the meantime, please mark your calendar for our first confirmed event of the year on February 22-23, 2020 at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson on the 3.1-mile track. Registration will open Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 8:00 am. From your Maverick DE Team, we hope you have a happy holiday season with friends and family, and we hope to see all of you at the track in 2020!

Dear Tire Guy What is Heat Cycling and Why Does it Matter to You? Track and competition tires are manufactured to be very aggressive, and need to be broken in first to perform consistently later. Tires flex under load and duress as they roll into and out of contact with the road surface. As a tire flexes and heats up it breaks some of the weaker bonds between the rubber molecules. After an initial heat cycle the rubber bonds will link again after they cool, this time more uniformly and stronger. A full heat cycle therefore consists of heating and flexing the tire to break weak rubber bonds and then allowing it to cool for at least 24 hours so the rubber compounds re-link stronger and more track-ready.

So why does this matter to you? Because if a tire is initially run too hard, rather than being properly heat cycled, it will break not only the weaker rubber bonds, but the stronger ones as well and this will reduce their grip. Proper heat cycling will also allow for more consistent performance on the track, as well as longer tread-life. That’s more money back in your pocket per lap. Who doesn’t like more money, right? No one. That’s who. Until next month, drive on!

A Boo-tiful Event: 5th Annual Halloween Rally Overcomes the Weather By Ed Martelle

provided by Hart Photography

It was a miserable Saturday morning. Gray leaden skies, cold temperature, winds at 30 mph, and of course, drizzle and light rain. Still, 29 cars turned up for the 5th Annual Halloween Rally, starting in The Colony. Once underway, the rain stopped, the wind lightened, the drizzle lifted, and the sun came out. The day continued to improve further, as the finish was at Pilot Point’s wellknown Buff’s Grill, which made all contestants and volunteers right at home, and well-fed.

The 82-mile rally was quite straightforward, but challenging nonetheless, with 18 questions, 10 photographs to be identified along the route, and six bonus point questions. What the rally lacked in scenery, it made up for by keeping the teams very busy. In addition to the Rally, won by Claudia and Jeff Reynolds (second place: Raul & Lisa Pena, with Jason and Patrick Lamers in third, and the coveted Dead Last But Finished Award going to Frankie Vasquez and Alejandra Franco), there were the costumes. It was a Halloween Rally after all. First place for Couples went to Mike and Lisa Reiss, dressed as scarecrows. Second place for couples went to Marc and Chris Weinberg, who dressed as a convict and a prison guard. New this year were awards for best single costume: First place for Natalie Parma, a

very convincing devil, while second place went to Ginger Heuerman, a dead ringer for Janis Joplin. The original Rallymaster for the event was Jay Lynch, who died while work on the rally was underway. Rally Chair Don Sebert and an intrepid band of volunteers did the finishing touches to the event and handled sign-in and scoring for what became the Jay Lynch Memorial Halloween Rally. And true to Jay’s spirit and vision, everyone competing was encouraged to have fun and enjoy, and, according to post-event conversations, that’s exactly what they did. A fitting tribute.

Rally winners: 1st Place: Jeff and Claudia Reese, 2nd Place: Raul and Lisa Pena, 3rd place: Jason and Patrick Lamers and Dead Last But Finished (DLBF) winners: Frankie Vazquez and Alefandra Franco

The Star Car Show: Trunk or Treat by Julia Cleath and Becky Gomer Julia Cleath - Today was an exciting day! My husband and I participated in a car show. It was a debut for our ‘81 911 SC. We’ve recently finished a lengthy restoration. I always enjoy hanging with the Mavs & Mochas regulars, but today was extra special! The event was held at The Star in Frisco, and had a Halloween theme, including a “trunk-or-treat!” Each vehicle supplied candy; many costumed children came. The Star venue offered good coffee and a variety of places to eat. The weather was beautiful, and it

photos provided by Bill Kruder appeared that everyone in attendance enjoyed the day. We had 50+ Porsches, with nearly 100 Maverick Region members. This was a great showing, as multiple car clubs were invited. At these events, I love connecting with the other gals, (no offense guys), and today did not disappoint. Some of my favorite Maverick ladies were there! I would love to see more of you gals come to these events! We always have a good time! Left: Jason Oliver’s 996 Right: Julia Cleath, and Becky Gomer. Becky Gomer - What does one say when being asked to participate in a car show? Of course, you say “yes.” The Star in Frisco held its annual Star Car Show on Saturday, October 26. The event information stated that we would see some of the most popular antique and classic muscle cars through the decades, as well as a “Trunk or Treat” for the kids to participate. The early morning clouds and mist finally parted to reveal a sunny but cool Saturday. We enjoyed hot coffee with friends, which I guess we can consider an impromptu, before the show officially began at 10 am. I was impressed with several of the various cars in

attendance, such as a McLaren Senna, several Shelby Cobras, and my personal favorite, a Shelby Raptor. However, truth be told, I was more pleased walking around our Porsche parking area of more than 50 Maverick members’ cars, which truly represented the decades of classic Porsche design. From 356s, 911s, 914s, 944s, Boxsters, a Panamera, a Macan, and finally, I can’t forget the always crowd-pleasing 918. We have some outstanding cars in our club! We invited some friends, who own a convertible and always love to discuss cars when we go out, to meet us at the event. It was fun to walk around with them discussing all of the different cars at the show. After seeing the attendance of our Porsche club and getting the opportunity to view our star cars, I think we have a couple of future Maverick members on our hands. I’ll be sure to introduce them when they join the Porsche family.

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

I guess it’s traditional to wrap up the year and take stock in January, which seems a little a little late to me. I don’t think it’s fair to expect a person to really reflect on an entire year and plan a new one after wading through all of the egg nog, cookies and little dandy things that seem to be around the house then. Not to mention the glutinous meals and relatives you’re still recovering from. It can’t just be me. So I’m starting earlier this year. The club has enjoyed unprecedented growth, and why not? Great cars, great events, but as the tag line says, great people too. Some of those great people are moving to new positions in the club, and some are taking a well deserved break. David Robertson has been president of the Maverick Region since January of 2017, having served as vice president before that. (Incidentally, that’s when I began putting ads together for Slipstream as well, under the tutelage of Mr. Jim Hirsch.) David has put together 3 great years of club events with the help of many volunteer board members and many more volunteer club members working together to pull these

events off, but it’s a lot of work. If you see David at an event, he’s always wearing a smile and has a handshake waiting for you. I imagine that will not change, even when he moves on from his role as president. We owe David a great thanks for his many years of contributions to the club. I don’t get to award a Mav of the Month, but he’d be my pick this month if I did. Thanks David! As I look back at 2019, I think of all of the great drives and events I attended. I also think of all of the great drives and events I wasn’t able to attend. Don’t let this happen to you. Plan your year around the Maverick calendar. Don’t miss a single exciting installment of Mav & Mochas, or hair raising adventure at Motoring Mavs at Mayo. Seriously, walk into that shop and try not to get excited about the air-cooled goodness. Whatever you do, whether you’ve been to a hundred events or are thinking about going to your first, take the step and meet some new folks. They’re showing up every week in record numbers, and they all drive Porsches. Can you think of a better thing to have in common? Yeah, I know: Enjoy the drive!
