Intro To Autocross 101

With so many new members interested in our driving events . . . the Maverick Region has decided to offer a basic pre-season, “how to autocross” school.

At Orientation, students will learn how to Register, Classify and Tech their cars. Professors who have decades of driving experience will give lectures on how to safely enjoy driving the cars we all love so much. Labs will be given on basic Autocrossing skills like Cornering, Slaloms, and the Skid Pad. Teaching Assistants will provide you with all the tutoring you will need to learn these skills. Lunch will be provided in the School Cafeteria while the Autocross course is prepared. A Driver’s Assembly will get everyone ready to have fun with the short low-speed autocross. The Deans of the 356, 911, 912, 914, 924, 928, 944, 968 and 986 Colleges will provide initial Course Walking instruction for the students by car type. (Non-Porsches will be taught by the Dean of Foreign Studies!) The Teaching Assistants will then provide hands on instruction and demonstration in Course Walking, Car Handling, Autocrossing and Corner Working. Following the Driving Class a Recess Period will give Students, Teaching Assistants and Professors the opportunity to have Fun Runs to get prepared for the Autocross #1 Finals on February 18th at Standridge Stadium. Everyone, faculty included, is encouraged to bring their cars out and have fun. Fun Run participants must sign the waiver and pass tech inspection before they are allowed on the track. Please RSVP by January 31st . . . but limited on-site Late Registration is allowed.

Class fees are $25 for Members and $30 for non-Members. Free lunch for all Workers and Instructors. To Register or Volunteer, contact Wendy Shoffit at (972) 506-7449 or email at wendy@shoffit.com

Prez Says: by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President Wendy and I just got back from a week long ski trip to Whistler (just North of Vancouver, BC in Canada). We took a few friends with us and met some friends there and it gave us a nice chance to ski, relax, and recuperate from the holidays. Coming back to reality has been difficult! I have started a new software consulting contract, so I find myself busier than I have been in quite some time. There are new members joining our club every day, and I have gotten to meet a few of them at Happy Hours, and other various events (and spoken to a few on the phone). I would like to encourage all the new members to come out and try a few events to see what we have to offer and find out what you enjoy. Our next driving event is the Intro to Autocross on February 3rd, a great place to start. If you miss that event, then feel free to come out to the first Autocross on February 18th at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton and meet a few people. There will also be a Swap Meet at GTI on the 17th, which always brings out large quantities of people. I know I will be bringing another load of car parts to try and give away! Further, the following weekend is the Driver Education event at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson. Again, even if you don’t enroll in the event, feel free to come out and meet people and see what the events are about. Also keep the Ladies Autocross School and New

Member Party on your schedules for March. Several members from various locations around the metroplex have wondered why we try to have everyone make the trek to Mayo Performance for Pre-Tech on the Wednesdays before Autocrosses and Time Trials. There are quite a few reasons, but the main ones are that 1) if we find a problem with your car, you have time to fix it, 2) we want to help maintain our excellent safety record, 3) pre-registration at the Pre-Tech greatly assists the registrar, event coordinators, and worker deity, 4) it gives us a chance to discuss the event with those unfamiliar with it, and (most important to me) 5) we get to socialize with old friends and meet new ones. There has been discussion of allowing pre-tech to occur at other places around the metroplex, but that would only seem to address point 1 and possibly point 2 above. It would still be courteous and advantageous for the event coordinators to know who and how many would be arriving for the event. Having the Pre-Tech at a dealer or other service location also minimizes the possibility of meeting other Maverick members and gaining a comfort level for the club and its activities. Further, it would not satisfy our requirement for novice orientation for Time Trials. This does not mean we are not working on it – for instance I would like to see some type of internet-enabled registration which would mean much less work for the registrar. But, as I am finding out, changes take time!

Pam’s Page by Pam Abdalla, Editor Okay, my second issue is done and it certainly went much smoother than the first. With my move behind me I can now get more involved in the club and get to know all the people who I will be working with. I am still learning everyone’s names. Sitting in the January Board meeting at the Shoffit’s it became apparent to me that I didn’t know half of the people in attendance. Luckily, James went around the room and asked everyone individually, by name, if they had anything to add. By the time the meeting ended I felt confident that I could have passed the board-meetingattendees-name-quiz if given to me. Now if only I could remember what post everyone holds! I’ll master that one during February’s meeting. I’m looking forward to getting more involved in the club this year and going to a lot more events. George and I joined a little over a year ago and since then he has gone to quite a few events, mostly autocrosses and DE’s, but I was only able to attend 3 events due to being pregnant, and then, of course,

having a newborn. Mikayla is now going on 9 months and although she is still quite a handful, she would probably enjoy being outside in the fresh air this Spring and Summer at the track. Well, as fresh as the air gets at the track. I might have to invest in a tent, though, as I remember last summer’s AX at Texas Motor Speedway was quite toasty. Well, George and I are off to a ski weekend in Santa Fe. Hopefully I won’t break my arm and I’ll be able to do the March issue just as smoothly as this one.

Maverick Region PCA board meetings are held once a month. The board meetings are open to all PCA members and your suggestions and opinions are welcome.

Maverick Minutes by Andy Mears, Maverick Region Secretary The first board meeting of the new officers was on January 3, 2001 at the home of James and Wendy Shoffit in Valley Ranch. The premeeting dinner was an assortment of pizzas and holiday desserts including a huge 5-pound Hershey chocolate bar.

Teri Davis gave us an update on the January 20th Rally Workshop.

James brought the meeting to order at 6:58 to a full house with all current board members in attendance as well as most of the previous board.

A discussion was tabled regarding acquiring a new printer for Joel Nannis to use for printing reports. Also, a motion was passed to donate a 486 PC that belongs to the club to Hope Shelter.

At this time Bob Knight is waiting for Joey to transfer the bank account and checkbook to him. The 3Q reimbursement check has been deposited.

Everyone sang happy birthday to Graham Lane (Happy 39th again).

Next, Brian Scudder reported on the status of the October Club Race that Maverick Region is hosting at TMS. He said the club will need to commit half the money by mid-year. Also, Brian is looking for volunteers to help at this event. James reported that PCA National is encouraging more members to get trained and certified as corner workers. If you are interested, contact any of the board members for more details. The new member party will be in March and an approved amount was established to spend on mailings and party related expenses. Discussions began regarding the January track cleanup day at Mineral Wells to substitute for the scheduled Autocross 6

Instructor Workshop. The Autocross (AX) Instructor Workshop has been postponed; information will be published in both Slipstream and on the web once the details are nailed down.

Brian Scudder’s 928 group is planning some activities this year to include Tech Sessions and tours, if you are interested in finding out more please contact Brian. Mike Oakes gave an update about the web site and that the calendar is up to date and that if you have access to the web you should check the site regularly for updates. (www.pca.org/mav) American LeMans series is coming to TMS March 2-4 and Lanean is looking for volunteers to help. Kevin Hardison gave a report on the Autocross school that is scheduled for March 31 and April 1, he is looking for 10-15 more workers and instructors. James brought the meeting to a close at 8:40.

Calling All Porsche Ladies! Ladies-Only Autocross School Saturday, March 10th Calling all Porsche ladies - Again! Back by popular demand, we will be holding our second annual Ladies-Only Autocross School on Saturday, March 10. This is the perfect opportunity to discover what autocross is all about, without the pressure of competition, or the "significant other" lurking about making faces! Our instructors are Maverick Region female drivers, with years of experience in competitive events. We will be moving through all aspects of autocross from a beginners' viewpoint, to learn the rules and procedures of autocross as well as driving techniques. We encourage driving the Porsche, but certainly do not wish to limit

our entrants. You may bring the "other vehicle" if you feel more comfortable (one exception no trucks or SUV's). Our goal is to learn car handling and limitations in a safe and controlled environment. Be aware that you will be required to wear a helmet (Snell 1995 or later). If you have one, can beg or borrow one, please do so. We have a limited number of loaner helmets available. All cars will be inspected by a technical inspector for safety and readiness. You should have adequate tire tread condition and good working seat belts. You will also be required to wear tie shoes.

Registration and Tech opens at 9:00 am with a drivers' meeting at 10:00 am. We will have a break for lunch. You might want to "brown-bag it" so that we can spend more time discussing the events of the day. We should be finished by approximately 3:30 pm. Although husbands or significant others are welcome to observe, they WILL be put to work on corners. For those ladies out there who are ready for a little competition, and for those that just want to know why he likes this so much, please join us for a day of fun and excitement. Registration is $25. If you are interested in joining us, please contact me through one of the following means and come out to play! Jan Mayo 972-443-3916 (day) 817-595-4651 (evening) JLMayo@celanese.com

Class fees are $25 for Members and $30 for non-Members. To Register or Volunteer, contact Wendy Shoffit at (972) 506-7449 or email at wendy@shoffit.com

Maverick Region Holiday Party 2000 by Wendy Shoffit

Partygoers having a grand time. Although it took a bit of driving to get to Lucas, the home of Eric and Karen Erz provided the perfect setting for this year’s holiday party. More people showed up to celebrate than I’ve seen in the past few years. Somewhere between 75 and 100 guests knocked on the Erz’s humongous specially crafted front door. Their warm wooden décor provided much relief from the cold wet weather outside. Half of the crowd spent most of the evening socializing downstairs while munching on all the yummy covered dishes everyone provided. The other half ventured upstairs to their fabulous game room, fully equipped with a billiards table and stand-up arcade game (Galaga – one of my favorites). A few hotly contested (?) games of pool were played and nearly everyone upstairs took a shot at besting Eric’s Galaga high score. It’s hard to tell who was the best (not me), but everyone had a great time!

Many thanks go to Eric and Karen who opened up their home to the whole Maverick bunch. Even though their custombuilt house had just only recently been finished, it didn’t show. The atmosphere was truly warm, comfortable, and inviting. Maybe the next time we can let their championship fly-ball dogs join in all the fun. If you weren’t there, you missed a fantastic time! Don’t miss it next year.

Although the kitchen held the majority of the delicious food, it seemed like the most visited room was the dining room. That room contained the dessert table! Whether you wanted chocolate, cheesecake, cookies, or trifle, we had it all. I’m sure everyone found something to make them drool. Not only were food and drinks plentiful, but everyone happily paid their “admission fee” of a new or gently-loved stuffed animal for the Hope Shelter. As you can clearly see in the picture, the shelter would be receiving enough toys to give every child one, two… or fifteen each! 14

Porsche Contesting 3 Classes - Including Overall - at 2001 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona Copy provided by Porsche Motorsport - Pictures from www.porsche.com driven by Dorsey Schroeder/Bob Wollek/Hurley Haywood and Sascha Maassen. The car, which debuted at Sebring almost a year ago, has gone through an extensive development program, leading up to its outstanding performance at Daytona test days January 4 - 5, where the car was third fastest overall.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS Porsches will have their usual strong showing at this year's Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, as the January 4 - 6, 2000 test days are showing. Besides the recognizable competitors, NASCAR star Kyle Petty and actor Paul Newman, round out the list of more than 100 drivers who will be driving Porsches for the February 3 - 4 event.

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - January 5, 2001 More than 30 Porsches, including 17 Porsche 911 GT3 R and GT3 RS models, will enter the 2001 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, scheduled for February 3 - 4 at Daytona International Speedway. Leading the charge for the checkered flag in America's most famous endurance race is the #38 Champion Racing Porsche/Lola,

"We have spent nine days testing here before these 'official' test days, and each time we've tested, the car has had at least five new items on it," said Brad Kettler, Champion's crew chief. "This time, we have been able to concentrate on fine tuning, and we're very pleased. We have taken five seconds off our lap times at Daytona since November, and we're ready to compete for first overall." Powered by the Le Mans-winning Porsche GT1 engine, the Champion Lola has been running just behind the Dyson Ford Riley & Scott and the Intersport Judd Lola during the test days, which end on January 6. In the GT class, two teams have dominated testing so far both with all-star driver's line-ups. The #31 Petersen Motorsports/White Lightening Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R has been fastest so far, with Porsche Cup and Grand America champion Mike Fitzgerald, American Le Mans Series runner-up Lucas Luhr, ALMS contender Randy Pobst and Timo Bernhard sharing the driving duties. G&W Motorsports, which led last year's race for more than seven hours, is back with its two Porsche 911 GT3 R racers, with the top car - #81 - featuring Grand American runner-up Darren Law, '99 ALMS champion Cort Wagner, former World Challenge champion David Murry, and Matt Drendel as drivers. In GTS, with the defending champion Dodge Vipers not entering this year, the race should be a shootout between Corvettes, the Saleen Mustang, and the Porsche turbos and GT1 race cars. So far in early practice, the #0 Bytzek Motorsports Porsche GT1 of David Empringham, Scott Maxwell, Klaus Bytzek and John Brenner has outdistanced the favored factory Corvettes, including the car being driven by Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. The fastest Porsche 911 Turbo, driven by veteran Larry Schumacher, is in the top five in class.

Other Porsche notes of interest from Daytona test days : * David Murry, from Atlanta, GA, has been hired by G&W Motorsports (as noted above) to replace Porsche SuperCup champion Patrick Huisman, who has signed a contract in Europe to drive for Mercedes. * Kyle Petty, NASCAR veteran and son of Richard Petty, will step into the #43 Orbit Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RS with Leo Hindery, Peter Baron, and former Ferrari North American President Gian Luigi Buitoni. * Paul Newman, who will be 76 years-old on February 25, will be re-joining his Daytona team from a year ago - with 18 year-old Gunner Jeannette and Michael Brockman as co-drivers in the #76 Porsche GT1 (former Champion Racing GT1). 16

* Larry Schumacher, who bought the ex-Rohr Motorsports Porsche GT1 less than three weeks ago, brought the car to the Speedway for test days, but will be running his Porsche Turbo for the 24 hour event. * While the #0 Bytzek Porsche GT1 is running strong, the #01 Bytzek Porsche GT1 will not be racing again any time soon. An oil fire during the Friday morning session has sidelined the car indefinitely. Bytzek, who owns four Porsche GT1s, plans to bring a replacement car to the race next month. * Neither of the top two Porsche American Le Mans Series teams - Dick Barbour Racing or Alex Job Racing - have entered this year's Rolex 24. Both teams have indicated they will participate in the 2001 ALMS season - which begins March 4 in Texas - but neither has announced plans or drivers to date.

* The race will be televised live - all 24 hours of it - on Speedvision starting at 12:30 PM on Saturday, February 3. Speedvision pioneered flag-to-flag endurance coverage last year by televising both the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. * The official Porsche web site - www.porsche.com - will have practice and qualifying information on the Rolex 24 for all the Porsches entered, and will file stories every three hours during the race. Other web sites that will follow the overall event include the Grand American Road Racing site (www.grandam.com), the ON TRACK site, (www.ontrackonline.com), Speedvision site (www.speedvision.com), and the CompuServe site (www.motorsportsforum.com).

* Defending Rolex 24 at Daytona GT champions Gabrio Rosa, Fabio Rosa and Fabio Babini are back for 2001, driving this for the Canadian-based Seikel Motorsports in the #56 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Last year, they drove for the Swiss-based Haberthur Racing. * The new racing model of the Porsche 911 has been designated as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and is almost identical to the Porsche 911 GT3 R. The new car has some updated fittings, a slightly different front spoiler and rear wing, and other minor changes, but remains the same for the major components. Current owners can purchase an update kit from Porsche which incorporates all the improvements in the new car.

Hope Happenings by Lanean Hughes

GIVE THE GIFT OF COOKIES! Neither rain nor sleet kept us away from delivering the stuffed animals to the shelter on Christmas Day! Cheri Keehn and I took off in the rain, but the 928 held the road well, and of course was totally loaded with about 100 stuffed animals and games. The welcome sight of smiles always makes the trip worthwhile! Your stuffed animal donations will continue to make a child or adult happy throughout the year. We were saddened to hear of the death of one of the shelter members Rachel Pena, who was only 34 years old, she delivered a healthy baby girl, but they discovered she had a brain tumor, and were unable to save her. We will keep her and her family in our prayers. She left behind 2 other children. I have offered Maverick Region if the family needs any assistance. Keep Hoping and I encourage any of you to make a trip to the shelter.

Diane Johnson (wife of Rich, the 914 guy) Girl Scout troop will be participating in the "Gift of Caring" and will be selling girl scout cookies to be donated to a needy organization. They have chosen Hope Shelter as the recipient of their free boxes of cookies. You can help out by purchasing boxes of cookies to be donated to the shelter. Each box is $3. Purchasing begins January 5th. You can reach Diane via phone at 972-398-9146 or you can e-mail her at LDR4Girls@aol.com. Let's support her program!

Tech Tip: Loose Distributor Rotor 924s & 944 By Paul Lighthill, Riverside Region, from Porsche Gedanken A 944 that had recently come out of a maintenance service quit cold on the owner and would not restart. This was especially embarrassing since the car’s owner was the daughter of an experienced Porsche technician and owner of a repair facility. When a cursory check of the car revealed no spark, it was towed back to the repair facility for more detailed inspection and testing of the DME sensors which are located near the flywheel and which provide both timing and rpm information to the engine management computer. Prior to replacement of these items, however, the distributor cap was removed and a much simpler and less costly problem was discovered: the distributor rotor retaining screw had come out which had allowed the rotor to twist freely on its shaft.

will cause the adhesive to immediately take a set, resulting in the new rotor also having to be broken off as there will not even be time to properly position the rotor before the adhesive dries. Following the instructions that come with the adhesive will insure no further problems. The rotor set screw may be re-used providing that a mediumstrength thread locking compound is applied to the threads. Or a new screw may be purchased from Porsche(part no. 999.218.007.02) which will have the compound already applied to the threads.

A review of the factory service manual revealed the reasons for this malfunction: when the rotor was replaced as part of the service, the old set screw had been reused without applying a thread locking compound and instead of applying the special rotor cement that Porsche specifies, the rotor had been simply slipped on. When replacing rotors on these models, it is necessary to break off the old rotor and to clean the rotor shaft thoroughly. Then, prior to installing the new rotor, the specified adhesive(Porsche part no. PNA 043.011.00) should be applied to both the shaft and the interior of the brass fitting which is embedded in the rotor. It is imperative that the engine be cold when this operation is performed as any heat

The early 924/944 models still see a lot of track time - Sandy Hodges’ 924S.
