My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Slipstream Managing Editor

I

t’s the February issue but I’m writing this in January so New Years’ Resolutions come to mind. What are you doing for you? Yeah, diet and gym, start running again….. No, I mean, what are you doing for YOU?? How about some fun… some CAR fun. Look at the things we have planned for the next couple of

months. The Ladies and Teens Autocross school. Think of the thrill of seeing your teenager in a four-wheel drift going around the skid pad. Come on now, you know you’d be proud - Who would be whooping and hollering louder? Did you see in the January issue the number of ladies trophying in the autocross and time trial series? This is the place we all started. Pennington Field, nice and close to home, Saturday February 17. AND Ladies and teens get a two day double whammy. With one day of practice under your belt come back out Sunday and show up the new guys. Hee hee hee ! !

modulate it? Yeah, sure you can stop on a dime… can you stop on THE dime, precisely? Consistently? Can the newer cars be made to spin? How does it feel to slalom back and forth? Faster – Faster - oops. Well, Sunday’s your day, February 18. Are you already autocrossing? Had a year or two that you enjoyed very much? We have something for you, too. In March there will be another school, this one in Mineral Wells. This is great for beginners as well as those of you who consider yourselves itnermediate. The MineralRing has some more space for some higher speed applications. What fun is that!! Let me tell ya, A Bunch. March 3-4. And for you track junkies or wanna-be track junkies, MotorSport Ranch beckons. Two full days of instruction, 20-25 minute run sets, 16 corners, passing straights, 3.2 miles of track, what more could you ask for? February 24-25. Come on out and drive. I’ll see you there.

Guys, do you want a safe environment to see the limits of your car? Practice those ABS systems and see if you can

Please help us to keep growing! 4

Catch my Draft by James Shoffit, the Maverick Region President

I

am looking at the calendar for the upcoming months and it seems like we have something going on nearly every weekend. It is hard to keep up! But we are trying to make sure that no matter what type of activity a member wants to try, we have one available to them.

I love statistics and so I was looking at our membership roster to see how long people have been members. As it turns out, more than half of our entire membership consists of members who have joined in the last 4 years! Now, I am not sure if that is a high number or a low number, but I realized that many people may not even have an idea what a Concours is. I asked last month if anyone was interested, but I think I should probably go into a little more explanation, since most of us haven’t really been around since we had a locally run PCA Concours (except the Parade 2004 Concours, which was really a national event).

up. Sometimes there are 10-15 people, sometimes just a few. You might need to look around for the group, or ask the Maitre D’. We currently have them in Bedford, Addison, and Plano. I was considering starting a new one in Lewisville, maybe on a different date in case some of the people who attend other lunches would want to join in. Let me know by sending an email to president@mavpca.org if you would be interested in attending a Lewisville lunch. Coming up in February we have our first DE of the year to shake off some of the rust at Motorsport Ranch (our long-term local race track), as well as our Ladies/Teens Autocross School and the Introduction to Autocross, both on the same weekend at Pennington Field. You can check the website for details on all of our events. We also have our first Rally of the season – a Photo Rally in Plano. Come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

Concours d’Elegance is the official French title which means “contest of elegance.” (By the way, since the word is French, the “s” on the end of Concours in not pronounced – it sounds like kon-koor, or if you are from Texas, kawn-kewer). (Oops, I hope that doesn’t generate any “fan” mail!) The object is to get your car as close to the state it was in when it was delivered from the factory. PCA Parade Competition Rules provides for four main classes : Restoration where cars must be at least 10 years old, and doesn’t require full originality; Preservation where cars must be at least 10 years old and completely original; Preparation for newer cars; and Performance for race cars. The cars are scored by judges who look inside, outside, and under the cars to determine their cleanliness, and where appropriate, originality. They can look nearly anywhere including brake rotors, behind cylinder heads, door latches, etc. The Parade Concours is quite a big deal and people spend months preparing for it. In the Houston-area region (Lone Star) of PCA, they also have pretty intense Concours with full judging. But I would like for us to start small. Bob Bianconi, the Concours Chair for Parade when we hosted it in 2004, came forward and offered to help out with the Concours program this year. We will start with just some simpler events to get our feet wet - maybe a little more than a show-andshine and a lot less than a standard Concours. He wrote an introductory article in this issue, and look for a schedule to be coming out pretty soon. Another new type of event we are going to try this year is the Sunday Drive. We have a chairperson for that as well, and the idea is that we get together in our Porsches and take short drives to interesting places in our area. They won’t take all day, and the speeds will be limited to posted speed limits, making them friendly for passengers and kids. We should have a schedule for these coming out soon, as well. Final topic is our monthly lunches. We get together in different places around the Metroplex to grab a bite to eat with some fellow Porsche fans. If you haven’t tried one yet, give it a whirl. I have always enjoyed the ones I have attended. There isn’t really an RSVP system set up for that – whoever shows up, shows 5

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis

T

he January 2, 2007, Maverick Region Board Meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM.

Charlie: Requested cooperation by not talking when other board members have the floor. It’s difficult to hear the recording of the minutes when multiple conversations are in process. James: Bob Knight has agreed to continue to prepare our tax return. Discussed what the Club storage facility needed to retain? We decided to leave Club Race (CR) notebooks there, bring AX timing stuff to next board meeting and give to Charlie, leave pylons there, and dispose of old waivers. Wendy: Reported a good time at Hope Shelter Christmas Party. The House is about 90% complete and is occupied. Formal dedication will occur on 27th. She proposed we make Gift Certificates available for sale as gifts to enthusiasts who might like to try our events. General approval w/o vote. Proposed to sell in Goodie Store. Denny said that we still need to get PayPal working for the Store. Mark says there are state laws about gift certificates: If a certificate is sold and not redeemed (after some specific time), the state claims it. That is why most stores that issue gift cards/certificates gradually reduce the value. Wendy checked and found that she already had an expiration date on her prototype certificates. Mark: Our first moving event is the Photo Rally and he will proceed to secure insurance for it. Teri asked if counties are still required? Mark said to just specify the beginning location and the ending location, if it is different. Regarding ads: The DE ad for the next issue is the same as in the current Slipstream. A discussion of all pending events that needed ads ensued. Jan: Asked Charlie and/or Bryan to e-mail a copy of the AX/TT Rules change notice. Gave Bob a bill for the Hope House plaque. Inquired of Wendy if there was a plaque on the “kids” room. Discussed briefly if we should get a plaque for that room, as mostly it was done by the Lewis’s. She again asked for someone to write an article about the Holiday Party. Erica was not in attendance, so she was volunteered. Joel said he would “do his best” to have her expedite it this week. Bill: We have four confirmed DE dates at MSR: Feb, Apr, Sept, & Oct. He asked Jeff/Bob for a check to hold those dates (25%). RUF will sponsor the Feb one. Keith will be finding sponsors for the others. We will pay $900/day more for MSR in 2007. So, we have had to raise the entry fee for a DE to $240. We noticed a trend…the people in the yellow and white groups are waiting until the last minute to register…if the weather looks bad, they choose to skip. This was making registration difficult. There are long-lead-time things like meals, shirts, etc. Therefore, we have imposed a $20 late fee. Joe thinks that $20 is too low to have the intended effect. Bill agreed. He also said we still need people to take over Hospitality. Preferably, a non-participant. Jan 8

said she put a notice in her Slipstream article about this and asked Bill if he needed something bigger, to let her know. If anybody has any suggestions, please let him know. He was surprised to recently find out that John was no longer Club Race Chair! We are in need of a CR Chair. The Chair needs to be a non-driver. Joel: We have, according to PCA, 1075 primary and 822 affiliate members, for a total of 1897. My records show 1180 primary members. We have 105 more members than National says we do…and that’s again due to our keeping them on the rolls for an additional 3 months. Charlie asked about the people that we keep on for 3 months: What percent of those ultimately re-up? Joel said there’s probably about 25% of the people who re-up late. Bob: Thanked us for having him as our treasurer. He knows he’s supposed to say, “We have money,” but although Jeff assures him we do, he has only seen one $750 check. He and Jeff are going to meet at the bank sometime this week to sign a new card. James asked to join them if they do it before Friday. Bryan asked if we remove past officers? James replied that we did…eventually. Joe asked if Bob could print out checks if he was given a list of names. Bob said he thought we have been doing manual checks, James asked if he wanted to computerize it? Bob took that under advisement. Joe explained that at every DE event there is a significant number of checks that have to be written. He can give Bob an 85%-90% accurate list well in advance and he could have the checks preprinted. Mark asked how our books are kept? James questioned Bob regarding his desire to take on the task of learning QuickBooks or Quicken? Jan asked Bob if he knew the status of whether the books have been audited? He didn’t. James explained that Dennis had a friend that was going to do it. Denny: He spent yesterday on the calendar of events. He put most of the repeating events in the calendar. But he did not have info on any of the driving events. He requested we let him know if there is something this month that should be in the calendar and he’ll get it included ASAP. The New Member Party, the Happy Hours, and the Lunches are there…but that’s all. James asked if the Hope House Dedication should be on there? Denny will put an entry for Sat 27th…no time…and a contact. Charlie asked if we should call it the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House? We decided to just call it the Hope Shelter. Teri inquired about Rally dates on the calendar. Denny had not put them on. Denny doesn’t want to depend on “mining” of Slipstream for info all the time, so please let him know if there is something missing. James asked Denny to put the whole 2007 calendar on the web site. Wendy volunteered to help. She asked if we wanted a printable .PDF version again. We decided to continue that tradition. Jeff: James skipped him, as he was now gone. Tracey: The New Member Party is the next Social event and will be located at Hedgecock and Custer in Plano. People will be

invited to bring DVD’s for the huge media room. The wine tasting is March 10th for at MOST 32 people. It’s going to be the same format as last time at Premier Wines, at Parker and Preston in Plano. May at Mayo’s will be the 1st weekend of May to avoid a conflict with Mother’s day. Wendy proposed we call it Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s? Denny noticed the Addison Lunch, being the 3rd Tuesday of every month, happens to fall on Christmas day this year. We discussed moving or dropping this lunch, but did not decide. Tracey spoke to Hackberry Creek and told them we were less than enthusiastic about our service and food lately, so she is investigating other nearby restaurants. Lisa: Asked if there is room for more ads in Slipstream? She has 5 potential new advertisers. This started the longest discussion of the night! [begin short version] We decided to gather more data about Slipstream costs and ad rates and make the decision later. [end short version] Andrea: She has nothing to report about AX registration. Bryan: Admitted that he had a bunch of stuff to discuss, but will cut it short. We had an AX rules meeting on December 11, with Charlie, James, Lisa, Wendy, Mike Lockas, Shelly, and Bryan in attendance. We changed a few small things in the Rules; nothing major. Charlie and James adjusted the PPF calculations. He announced that the Father’s Day picnic will be at the Bell’s house, with approval from Andrea. He wants everyone to come. Clint: He’d like to help…volunteer to do something. We discussed his qualifications and desires…offered him Club Race

Chair, Slipstream Editor, Concours Chair, etc. Clint wanted to discuss it afterwards. Charlie: Gave Bob an invoice for the pictures at Founders Day. He reported that only one of the pictures was returned by USPS and he has re-sent it. Teri: The Photo Rally is next on the rally series. She has dates, but not locations for the others. She can put these in your neighborhood, if you’re interested. All she needs is a little help on the front end. If you have some ideas for rallies, let her know. Robyn: She just showed up to see what we were talking about. She came to hear some GOOD stuff that doesn’t get put in the Minutes! Lisa tried to get her to volunteer for Hospitality Chair. She’ll think about it. Travis: He came to understand and appreciate what it takes to run this club; he likes to peek into the inner working circle every once in a while. Travis said he liked to see the board in action and see all the other parts that he didn’t deal with. It gives him a better understanding. He reported that he likes the on-line Slipstream the best, because it has colored pictures and he can look at it at work. James: Asked about sponsorship of our major events, specifically how do we handle a situation where we have more than one potential sponsor? We discussed it at length, with no resolution. He adjourned the meeting at 8:35 PM.

2007 Autocross and Time Trial Rule Changes by Charlie Davis

T

he AX/TT Rules for 2007 have been changed slightly. A few errors in the Stock Car Data, which affect primarily 944 and 1974-1977 911 models, have been fixed. A systemic change was made to the handicap weights used to compute the Predicted Performance Factor (PPF). This change will increase the handicap weights about 2% for everything except tire changes. The handicap on DOT tires has been increased about 29% (the actual handicap increase depends on the actual UTQG Tread Wear Rating, varying from 22% to 33%). The handicap on non-DOT tires has been increased 20%. These changes have 1) modified the base classes for some cars and 2) resulted in new PPF values for almost all cars. It is important that you visit the Maverick Region website and reclassify your car for 2007!

Bryan Bell - 2007 Autocross & Time Trial Chair

The written rules have also been changed. The biggest changes were to the Top Driver scoring. The Top Driver Runoff has been replaced with the computed Top Driver Index that previously qualified a driver for the Runoff. There were several small wording changes, intended to correct wording or clarify the rules (see B.1.a, B.2.c, and C.2.d). D4 is a new rule that specifies the max and min weights of pylons. The on-line Classification Spreadsheet has also been changed slightly to improve ease of use. Charlie Davis - 2007 Rules Committee

Putting the Question Mark in: Huh? by Bob Bianconi

I

t was when Jimmy Carter was president. Or when Walter Mondale was hosed by Ronald Reagan. When the terms 'air-head' and 'eat-myshorts' became popular. Maybe even as recently as the last Cowboy appearance in a Super Bowl… What am I talking about? Well the last time Maverick scheduled a year of Concours events, of course.

work out some trophies for the winners and everyone will have a chance to look at some awesome cars. Even if you don't win a trophy, you now have a car that is cleaner than it was the week before. How can you lose? So who can play?

Concours d'Elegance (sometimes misspelled as “concourse”), Show and Shine, whatever you want to call it is on the to-do list for this year. The most famous Concours d'Elegance, perhaps, are the events at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island. For PCA, Concours are held during the annual Porsche Parade, at the PCA Zone level (multiple regions) and by the various individual regions across the country. In fact, Hill Country holds a Concours event as part of Porschedillo each year. And now, Maverick is set to have a Concours program as well. What exactly is a Concours d'Elegance? For us, it'll be a car show where the cars are judged for cleanliness. At the national levels of PCA Concours competition, cars are judged to very high standards of originality and/or cleanliness. Some folks liken it to how the cars came out of the factory. But truth be told, when Peter Porsche was here in Ft.Worth in 2004, he was heard saying that the cars on display were much cleaner than when they come out of his factory! For our first foray into Concours, we'll be happy to have you bring your freshly washed car to put on display. And if you feel the twang of competition, you can even do a little detailing so that it looks just a little better than the car next to you. That's the whole idea, you know. We'll

Esther at the Portland Parade Concours Well, here's a simple question: Do you wash your car? Have you ever washed your car? I hear a collective, yes (once, a couple years ago), Well, then, YOU are now qualified to enter an upcoming Maverick Concours. Stay tuned for more information about the first Maverick Concours since Britney Spears left the Mouseketeers.

(with her portable sewing machine) hemmed and hung drapes. Bill Middleton and Ron Colbert set up lights and camera to record all the festivities.

The tree was put up and decorated. Tables and shelves were adorned with Christmas scenes the children of Hope had made the day before. Depending upon whom you asked they were up until 11:30 PM or 12:30 AM making desserts and snacks for us. You could tell how proud they all were. One dessert was an arrangement of cupcakes iced in pink and white and then formed as a candy cane. And there was enough food plus dessert to feed us two times over.

During the party Jean Frick played her “fiddle” and we all sang the traditional Christmas songs.

ecember 23, 2006, was truly a joyous day as it marked the first Christmas at the completed new Hope Shelter.

Due to an emergency (the phone company turned off the phones at the old shelter), staff and families scrambled to move in the week before we arrived and they got ready for Christmas all at the same time. In talking with the children it was a beehive of activity.

But the main event was the children receiving presents. These came from the Maverick Region members that brought them to the Maverick Christmas party. The This little girl found the custom rocker boys enjoyed radio controlled model Porsches and a train set. The girls enjoyed dolls, games, jewelry, and cosmetics. All children and mothers received gift certificates at a local superstore. The mothers and staff received cosmetic bags filled with various toiletries again from member’s donations. These were assembled at a stuffing party in early December. There was considerable preparation and fun before this party at the Hope Shelter. There is a story behind the precious little girl on the bright

red rocking horse. This horse was purchased from a charity second hand store. It was sanded, painted red and black, and had Maverick decals applied. It was emotional to see this girl in the play room known as Lanean’s Playroom. Lanean had a big interest in the room for the children at this shelter. We feel she was very proud looking down on the achievements at the new Hope Shelter.

2006 Holiday Party by Erika and Joel Nannis

T

his year’s holiday party was hosted by Bill and Virginia Campbell at their home in Fort Worth. After driving “half way across Texas” from Rockwall, we arrived (thanks to MapQuest). Depositing the toys that we had brought for the Hope shelter under the tree, I observed that the club was going to make a lot of children very happy on Christmas Day. Once again, the

I was able to meet a new member, Russell Millicent, who has a 911 race car and a 912 for sale. His significant other, Dossie Post, was very enthusiastic about putting on a rally (Teri, you need to call her). Drew, Bill and Virginia’s son, will be graduating college this year and will then be heading over to England to develop video games. He will have to go to the conventions and convince people to try the new games. This sounds like a real tough job for him. Good luck to Drew. If anybody is going to England, stop by and say, “Hi.”

Richard Cross was concerned about the weather the following day because he once again would be riding his Harley delivering toys. It turned out to be cold and wet but he still was out there. Ed Mayo was answering questions about how to fix this or how to do that. I would think that after over 25 years of asking questions of Ed, he might tell me “ENOUGH”, but he still answers everything that I (and others) ask. We did go out and look at Bill’s cars. If people think that Boxsters are not reliable, ask Bill who has 160,000 + on his with no trouble. Campbell cat and Jean Frick enjoying the couch club came through with lots of great presents. I am sure that Lanean would have been proud to see the smiling faces when the toys were delivered. Looking around the first thing we noticed was the food that was catered by On the Border. They had provided a great spread. Many thanks to Tracey Gross for all her work in setting everything up which, from my perspective, went off smoothly.

The Goodie Store had Maverick Region Calendars at the party, so I picked several up for gifts. If you have driven in the autocross or time trials then most likely your picture is in the calendar, so I suggest you pick up one or two. Kevin Hardison has done a wonderful job on the calendars. Maybe next year I will make it to a big picture if the car smokes enough on track. As the night wore down, people said good night and many left with care packages of food. We left for the trip back “across the state” with a warm heart having had the opportunity to see so many friends. I think only Rocky now has a longer trip from Quinlan than Erika and I, so they had to leave an hour or two earlier than we did. Charlie Davis was taking pictures and one day I hope to figure out how to see them on his website.

Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the party a success.

Meanwhile, all the wonderful homemade goodies filled another room. Yum! Tracey Gross always seems to be able to have these affairs run smoothly and her efforts are very much appreciated, along with all her helpers. Saying hello to everybody and conversing about (what else?) Porsches was easy with the margaritas from the margarita machine out by the pool. There were plenty of other items to choose to drink. Everybody showed their restraint and knowledge that drinking and driving is something that we don’t do. 16

Question and Answer by Ed Mayo

Q

uestion: Bear with me please, I have to "front load" some information first. My uncle bought a brand new 911 T Coupe (white / black interior) in 1970 in New York City. In 1975 he moved to Florida and put very little mileage on the car. In fact, by 1985 he only had 45K miles on it. He kept his car immaculate inside and out and always garaged. In 1985 however, it was involved in an accident where the frame was bent. His Porsche Mechanic who had been the car's "physician" for the last 27 years found him another 1970 911 T Coupe (Robin's egg blue)that had approximately 111K miles on it but said the body of the car is "perfect"! My uncle bought this car and had his engine and drive train, suspension system, heating system, and complete interior from his white 911 put into this blue 911. When the work was being completed, he had his mechanic re-build his engine and tranny and a new coat of paint (Robin's Egg Blue). The car was re-titled under the blue 911 vin with the engine of the white 911. Since 1985, he has only put 13K miles on the car. The engine now has 58K and the body / chassis has 124K. The car is in excellent condition and still runs strong. I now own this car...been in my family for 32 years.

A

nswer: Well, I hate to say this, but I wouldn't consider that car original any more. I realize "original" is a fun term you can play with (the old Grandfather's axe handle" game). The easy answer is that in preservation class judging at Parade concours, you must present a cardex. Your's would show a different engine number. Without the cardex (local low-key concours) it won't really matter. Yes, it's all 1970 T parts. If you do any performance mods to the engine that are visable, then it's obviously not "original". If you do things that aren't visible then it's between you and your car. Ed Mayo - PCA WebSite - 7/19/2002

The question is...What is considered original? It's all 1970 911 T! What class may I "show" the car? I was considering doing some high performance work to the engine. Would I destroy any "originality" to this car considering it's history? %#2 (ALF 0AGE 3LIPSTREAM !D PDF 0-

With PCA, you can pick from a number of classes, dependent upon your car. Cars are built from mild to wild, depending upon what class you plan to enter and to what level you want to participate. Our experience building and racing Porsches goes back to our 911's in the mid and late 70's, 924's and 944's in the 80's in SCCA, IMSA GTU and Firehawk, PCA in the late and early 80's/90's, and Speedvision GT, Rolex GT and GT in 2000 up. In addition to the Porsches, we have had a hand in building five AUDI S4's for the Grand AM Cup, and a couple of AUDI TT's for SCCA. The restaurant turned out to be well-suited for us, with good food and service, and the prices were right. I noticed that a lot of our people were eating some kind of stuffed artichoke dish and they all raved about it,

It was really good to see Steve Watkins up and “running” after his terrible plane accident this past October. While the healing is still happening, Steve is still (as always) all smiles. Godspeed, Steve!

his was another new place for us, which was recommended by (and also set up by) Tinker Edwards. At the last minute the restaurant wanted a specific count from Tinker, because they were expecting a full house and wanted to set aside the right amount of space. Of course, with Happy Hours, we never really know how many people are coming. Since Tinker had no choice except to go on record with something, she told the Trish Christensen is restaurant to expect 45 people. And the dressed for the Holidays final count was – get this – 44! My recommendation is that the next time you go to Las Vegas, take Tinker with you.
