Somewhere the Zebra is Dancing

Y

Bryan Bell, Vice President

ou would think that I am the last person who would give a book review, but I want to tell you about a great book (in my case: book on CD). It is “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein. I am sure many of you have already read this book, but for those who have not, go get it! In a nut shell, it is a great life story with love, pain, tragedy, triumph and most interesting to most of us, RACING! The twist is the narrator is a dog named Enzo. I know, I know, you are thinking “a dog?” but I promise, Enzo will be your best friend in the world at the end of this book. You may never look at your dog the same again. The main story is about an average guy named Denny Shift, who, like most of us, has a regular job and loves to drive cars on race tracks on the weekends. His claim to fame (as the title of the book suggests) is that he is really good at the art of driving in the wet. There is a fair amount of talk about American road courses like Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca and even Texas World Speedway. In the book he drives a lot of different types of cars like Mazda, Porsche & Ferrari. Denny is a deep thinking person and gives many great driving quotes in the book. For example: “There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose.” “That which you manifest is before you.” “No race has ever been won in the first corner; many have been lost there.” “The race is long - to finish first, first you must finish.” “The car goes where your eyes go.” But don’t get me wrong, talk of historic great drivers, racing and cars are not all this book is about. It is a story of the ups and downs of life all told from a perspective you have never even thought of before, but after reading this story, will never forget. Enzo becomes your trusted friend after 50 pages and you start to believe that some dogs may just think as we do, but can’t say it out loud. So, as I stated earlier, do yourself a favor and order a copy today. After you are done with it, you too will want to share it with someone else.

Mav of the Month

Our Mav of the Month is Clint Blackman Clint Blackman has been a member since 2005. He and wife, Judy, jumped right into the thick of things. He has participated in nearly every type 2

of event we have (although he hasn’t Club Raced his 2005 Boxster yet). In the five years he’s been a member, he has become a very important part of the board. When the old type of tours began going away, it was Clint who stepped up and created the Sunday Drive program in 2006. Sunday Drives have become a very successful part of the Maverick Region calendar and he has a very strong member following. Not only does he contribute by way of the scheduled drives, but he often utilizes his legal expertise and gives helpful suggestions to the board to keep us all protected. Thanks for all you do, Clint!

For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Clint dinner for two at their award winning steak house. Clint, thanks for all you do!

s I was driving in this morning, I realized that there are areas in our lives that we are naturally drawn to, and for most of us reading this, it’s cars, in particular Porsche. We as a group of car nuts make time to hang out, drive hard and enjoy each other’s company. If you haven’t heard about some local gatherings, “Cars & Coffee” is one happening on just about any given weekend. One such gathering I would like to point out in particular is held on the first Saturday of the month in Bartonville. Numerous Porsche 928 owners congregate for breakfast! Look them up and make new friends while learning about why there is still a deep love for the 928. Another way we can come together and make a difference is by reaching out and helping our local community be a better place. Read about how this is already happening at the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House and stay tuned for more information on how we can help transform their backyard into a park. That’s right, we are changing lives when we help those in need. Check out the ad for Habitat for Humanity, and lend a hand if at all possible by framing a home for a neighbor. Get out and make a difference this year!

Maverick Minutes Lisa Steele, Secretary

B

ringing in the new and the old for the January Board Meeting. We saw a few faces that we have not seen in a while and we welcomed some new members to the meeting. Our new members Madhu and Rashni Rao sat in on the meeting to get an insight to all of the events our club offers. WELCOME Madu and Rashni! We were also missing Mr. Mike the President at this meeting (something about another vacation in a very warm, tropical place I believe). No worries, we were under good leadership with Bryan Bell. For those of you who do not know Bryan’s motto: “All board meetings should last no longer than 60 minutes.” With that being said, we started about 5 minutes early to get the ball rolling. Bryan welcomed everyone. He then reminded everyone to make sure they contact Denny Payne with your “correct job” in the club and make sure all contact information is updated so that it can be posted on the website. On that note, Bryan announced that the Driving Schools will no longer be run by himself, Andrea Bell, and Lisa Steele.

Robyn Howard will be taking this event over and speaking from experience, she will need lots of volunteers to help her out. Check out the calendar and clubregistration.net so that you can save the date to help out at the schools. Jim Falgout reported that the budget is updated thru December. The club is in great shape and Jim announced that “we have money.” Bob Lewis and Chris Christensen reported that the Happy Hour at Uncle Bucks had a good turn-out. Bob also told the group that the Hope Shelter Christmas party was great this year. The Bavarian band had the kids doing the chicken dance and the kids loved Santa. John Hamilton announced that the DE dates are all locked in for both tracks. Keith Olcha continues to talk with sponsors for these events. Bill Miller (a face we have not seen in a while at the board meeting) gave a Club Race update. The race will be a two day event same as last year The Club Race will be on Memorial Day weekend and a similar turnout as last year is expected with a big turn out from the Spec Boxsters. Richard Bradley announced that we have had great input from people about Slipstream switching to color. Richard is also putting a request out there: Proofraeders needed! If you caught the spelling mistake, then YOU are the perfect person for the job!! Please contact Richard immediately to let him know that YOU would be happy to help take a look at Slipstream each month to find some of the minor mistakes each of us make before it goes to print. Ed Mullenix reported that the Tech Session at Park Place in December had six people. He felt that low attendance was due to several other events going on that same weekend conflicted with his event. He mentioned that he will schedule it differently in the future. Ed is looking at March 13th to schedule the next tech session since there is nothing on the calendar for this date. More to follow… Pat Friend found a good website company to take over the Goodie Store and opened the table for discussion. After several questions about payment options and percentage of sale the club would receive, everyone agreed that it would be a good thing to try. Pat will now oversee this website but if you need name badges or helmet bags, you will still need to contact Christy Payne. Clint Blackman reported that he has seven dates already set for Sunday Drives for the upcoming year. He

8

is also looking to plan a combined event with Ed (our tech session chair) that would include a convertible top “drape and spray.” As Ed and Clint shared a few whispers, they quickly set May 8th for this exciting event calling it Tops & Dogs (hot dogs will be served). Be on the lookout for more information! Christy Payne has officially taken over as the Social Chair. She announced that the menu for Hackberry (the current site for board meetings) has changed. Christy has also made the decision to combine the Holiday Party and Founder’s Day this year. She mentioned that the Gaylord Texan looks like it would be the perfect place for this combined event. By combining these two events, there will not be the usual autocross and time trial awards at this event. She plans on having a separate venue for this award presentation/dinner. Robyn Howard announced that the driving schools are all set and she is looking forward to getting many people involved. Robyn has also been busy setting up a Swap Meet/Concours at Zims on October 9th. Al Zim has agreed to give a 15% discount on ALL parts on this date, so everyone starting making your shopping list now. Carey Spreen has had a change of heart about continuing as Rally Chair. After talking with several other people, he has some new ideas about how to get more involvement, so he will stick it out for another year. We are so happy to hear this Carey, …you Rock!

Jerry DeFeo would like some feedback from people who have been trying the online trivia for prizes or the fun trivia with answers posted in Slipstream. Let him know your thoughts. Wendy Shoffit reported on her last social event, the Holiday Party. There were about 60-65 people who attended. Wendy commented that even though the Campbells have the perfect party house in Fort Worth, mid-cities locations seem to draw in more members. Jan Mayo announced that there are currently no new advertisers. However, TWS has been inquiring about Slipstream rates and would possibly be interested in a ¼ or ½ page. Travis Howard (aka speed meister) is looking forward to the first Time Trial scheduled for March. Get your cars ready and tires purchased! As the round table discussion came to an end, we all looked at our watches and Bryan stuck to his word, the board meeting concluded in one hour. But WAIT! I have not told you who Bryan chose as the Mav of the Month. Do we have time? Of course we have time to announce this wonderful person who totally deserves the honor. Drum roll please…Clint Blackman!

A Huffaker - Hughes Hope House Christmas by Jan Mayo

I

n between the weekend of the Maverick Holiday Party at the brand new home of Bill and Virginia Campbell and the following weekend Holiday Party for the clients and staff of the Huffaker Hughes Hope House, Clara Lewis and Chris Hamilton were Super Elves and pulled off the best Hope House party in recent history!

Armed with donated items and a wealth of Wal-Mart gift cards from the Maverick Holiday Party (Thank you generous Mavs), Clara and Chris made up gift bags for all the moms and kids. Lisa Huffaker and Clara set up snacks and sandwiches and Chris arranged the gift bags for easy distribution while Linda Bambina and Jan Mayo went wacko with the decorations. Clara, our Magnet Maverick for Hope, had arranged with Rich Keesecker’s Bavarian Dance Group to perform (see www.stvalmrausch.com) then special guest Santa Claus (Thank you, Larry Ramsey) made all the kids laugh and beam in his jolly presence. Such Fun. Once the toys and gift bags had been dispersed by Santa and his elves, and the food was mostly consumed, Jean Frick played her beautiful violin and lead everyone in a round of all the favorite Christmas Carols. Super photographers Dave Frick, Bob Lewis and Linda Bambina captured happy smiles all around the room and posed special Santa family shots for each of the families. Prints of the family shots will be sent to Lisa at the Hope House to give to each of the mothers 10

What a Party!

as a happy reminder of a special Christmas. Thank you again generous Mavericks for your help in this wonderful charity event.

The First 4-door Porsche? by Jerry DeFeo

W

hile we appreciate Porsche's ingenuity to bring us new products, we have found evidence that we here in Texas actually developed a 4-door Porsche some 33 years before the now famous Panamera. An article in the July 29, 2009 Motor Trend Magazine by Matt Stone reads; The new Panamera is the first Porsche four-door sedan to make it to market, but it's hardly the first time someone had the idea. Porschefilles will remind us of the Concept 989, drafted in the late 1980's by Harm Lagaay at the behest of

Built in America, for an American

now Aston Martin chief Ulrich Bez. Like the Panamera, it was to be a front-engine, V-8 powered machine and bears more than a little resemblance to the Lagaay-designed Type 996 Carrera born 10 years later. But one Dr. William Dick, a Texas Porsche Dealer trumped them all by decades. In 1967, he contracted with master fabricators Troutman and Barnes to build the one-off 911 sedan. T&B was a wellknown "Thunder Alley" race-car builder at the time. Even though it was a comprehensive and complicated build, the project was well within the limits of T&B's capability. No budget job this: They started with a new car. The most interesting aspect may be that the rear doors are also 911 pieces, slightly modified and mounted backward. If you would like to see more and read a very in-depth article on this car, see the Feb, 2010 Excellence. February 11

Holiday Party Paved With Kindness by Bill Campbell

W

e were honored when Wendy Shoffit emailed and asked us if we would host the holiday party again. We had just moved into a new home and a party always gives us a great excuse to prepare the house, and in this case, to finish unpacking. Three weeks before the party, I walked out to get the paper and part of my curb was being removed. As I drove out of the neighborhood, I saw even more major repairs happening at the other end of the street. When I came home for lunch, my driveway had been dug up. That got my attention and a call to Traffic/Public Works was soon in progress. A city employee returned my call and said we should have received notice of the street improvements. I was assured that the work would be finished that week, three weeks before the party. But they couldn’t finish if the temperature dropped below 50 degrees. That’s exactly what happened for the next two weeks, low temperatures. I warned Wendy that any and all Porsches would have to chicane around the large road equipment that had been parked on the street for weeks. Public Works had other plans. On Saturday morning, I awoke to the sounds of large road equipment. The weather was warm enough to repave the street. They would be paving it the day of the party. No worries I was told, we’ll be through today. And they were, but just barely. Those of you who arrived early probably still had to deal with the equipment, but at least our end of the street was complete. Wendy and Jan Mayo got to the house early to make sure everything was in place. Macaroni Grill arrived soon thereafter. Having two servers who setup, served, and cleaned up was another of Wendy’s great ideas. The Maverick Region is very lucky to have such great people. It really is the people, not the cars. Wendy had arranged everything. Virginia and I didn’t have to do anything. Well, to be honest, Virginia decorated like a Martha Stewart Christmas elf. I thought her “red fog” on the dessert bar was especially festive. Red was the theme this year. I’m lucky to have been married to an artistic angel for 35 years as of January 4th. She has themes. She has creativity. I set up the bare tree and do the lights. 14

Photos by Bill Campbell

As great as the Macaroni Grill food was, our members proved they know great desserts. I would point out my favorites, but I don’t want this to end up longer than my Santa list. I did my best to put on the 12 pounds of Christmas that night. That heavenly chocolate cheese cake that got left in the refrigerator didn’t help either, but sure made for great midnight snacks the next few days. About 60-70 friends, new and old gathered to celebrate the holidays. They brought more than desserts. They brought Wal-Mart gift cards for our charity, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. Over $1,300.00 of kindness was donated by our fantastic Maverick members. I send my heartfelt thanks to all of you who donated so generously to the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. As I type “Huffaker-Hughes Hope House, I realize that our club is a “4H” club. I’ll sheepishly stop writing now.

Christmas Light Parade by Clint C. Blackman III

F

or many, the Christmas holiday would not be complete without meeting friends and seeing houses decorated with Christmas lights. Our Mavericks continued this tradition with 42 happy folks sharing cookies and hot chocolate at the Starbucks in the Highland Park Village. Twenty-three Porsche cars, with a few suburbans and vans, enjoyed a great holiday light show. As we criss-crossed through Highland Park some folks thought we were just as important to see as the lights. As we passed one horse drawn carriage, a 10 year old boy shouted out “…. Look Dad….a Porsche Parade!” So next year come join your fellow Mavericks in the Porsche “Christmas Light” parade.

Cliff’s Ramblings by Cliff Blackshear

I

Sebring

was reading the January Slipstream and was so struck by just how passionate we are about these cars.

following Monday. The Manager’s reply was “Give me a cost estimate, I love it.”

So here is a personal example of witnessing the passionate love for Porsche and the all out driving experience. I was talking to John Gladwill one day recently and he said, “You know I have to go to Sebring this February and race in the Club Race. It is the largest PCA race of the year and it would be so much fun.” He further explained he had never driven that track and he just needed to get that done. He couldn’t figure out how to afford it, but it was gonna get done come hell or high water. He further indicated it would be a tough track to learn in a short period of time and that a good race outcome would be difficult to achieve. I know his driving skills, and thought to myself, “If no mechanical problems occur, he will do well!”

So I’m thinking “Is this cool or what?” Mind you I’m on board for the trip, going to this historic track and not driving or owning anything. I have to pay my own way etc. Yet I was giddy with anticipation. I told John, “I’ll go as the team gopher.” All Spec Boxsters… All cars I’ve watched at the track. All cars I’ve watched develop and get better. I love this stuff.....

We discussed this for a few moments and concluded; “Let’s do it!” “Why not gather up multiple Spec Boxster guys and get our shop to sponsor a trip?” The other driver/owners were salivating to go if they could get away. So a plan started to form. First we needed to convince management at our dealership that this would be a good thing for us to do. I approached our GM one Saturday morning and told him what we thought would be a cool thing for us to sponsor. John then also hit him with the idea the

So as I write this, we have six confirmed owner/drivers; very experienced transport lined up, and more, all from the Maverick Region. A close friend that I’ve known since childhood is also trying to line up to go. He is a true track junkie that has huge experience as a corner/safety worker. He has worked just about every kind of race possible. Club DE’s, Club Races, NASCAR, ALMS, F1, etc. etc. He currently drives a really well preserved 1978 911SC. We are gonna call him the “Team Spiritual Advisor.” Is this fun or what? I’m so stoked to go witness and help wherever possible. Now the Mavs need to do well. I’ll report the results of ‘the Team’ efforts next month. Ramblin’ along and still havin fun! Cliff

2009 Drivers’ Education Program wrap-up by John Hamilton

W

hat a great year for our Drivers’ Education program as we were blessed with good weather (despite forecasts to the contrary) and safe events throughout. 2009 saw the passing of the baton for the D.E. Chair from Colin Graidage to me after the Club Race in May, and the events continued to run smoothly throughout. Colin’s two years of service as Chair saw many improvements thanks to his great attention to detail, insistence on backup personnel, and great care about the professionalism of the program which brought it to a higher level. I will work hard to follow his lead with continuous process and program improvement, so we can grow the program and expand the training to ensure a safe, fun and satisfying experience.

of all, it was supposed to rain and it didn’t until 3 o’clock on Sunday. Secondly, one of the humorous recommendations from our Feedback surveys was implemented. The tonguein-cheek suggestion: “have a Hooters car wash after the D.E. program.” Ha! It just so happens that one of the members of the Maverick Region board knows a V.P. of Hooters. So we had Hooter’s and the Hooters Girls deliver lunch to us on both days of the event! What’s that old expression: “Be careful what you ask for…?”

Our September program introduced Driver Feedback surveys to help us discover what we should keep on doing, and what we could add to the program. The responses that we got gave us the insight (from the customers’ perspective) that most of what we were doing was right on target. But several enhancements could be added. The first to be implemented was additional training classes for our blue and white run groups. These turned out to be a real bonus for our drivers and instructors alike. We also got feedback that sometimes the driver/instructor communicators didn’t work. The club is now making the investment in additional “backup” communicators so we can loan them when an instructor’s communicator breaks.

So we continue to work on enhancements and improvements to the program. The survey sheets from November are being tabulated, and your committee will be working on implementing your suggestions that will make us better. Thank you to the committee, the instructors, the corner workers, the tracks and our sponsors who make it all possible.

Our October event took us back to Motorsport Ranch, but with a twist! We ran the short track in the clockwise (opposite than normal) direction. That was a thrill for most everyone. Many of us didn’t like it at first, since we are so used to going the other direction. But after a couple of sessions we discovered that we were learning new skills and enhancing old ones by driving a course that was “new” to most of us. More Driver Feedback surveys gave us some terrific ideas that were implemented in November. Our November Drivers’ Education event at Eagles Canyon was special (as all who attended will attest!). First 18

We also had the benefit of the new La Quinta Inn & Suites in Decatur who partnered with us for highly-discounted room rates and sponsored a cookout for all at their new facility. About sixty D.E. participants and guests attended and enjoyed the cookout and the fabulous cooking by the Keith Olcha family.

For those who were at one or more of the events in 2009, thank you for being a part of the great program that continues to provide training and fun in a safe environment. For those who were not able to make it out in 2009, we hope you’ll put it on your list of New Year’s resolutions to make the time for some safe fun with your Porsche. And for all of us, here are the event dates, locations and our fabulous sponsors so we can put the dates on our calendars NOW!!!

See you at the track!

This is too much fun! by Betty Hershman

B

ill was reveling in his newly purchased 2000 Boxster S when I became a convert. We took a few Sunday drives and shopping runs. Yes, this is fun I decided. He came across information on the Porsche Club of America, Maverick Region, and since we were not traveling for the holidays this year, we decided to try a few events during December. On Sunday, December 13, we drove to Highland Park for the Christmas Lights neighborhood display. Being fairly new to the area, this was our first trip to that area of Dallas. We honestly did not know what to expect. When we walked into Starbucks where the club was meeting before the drive, we were welcomed with such warmth and interest. Although we only had a few minutes there before the tour, both Bill and I felt like we just ran into old friends. Clint Blackman who organized the event was especially responsive to our interest and questions.

About forty cars lined up for the tour. We put the top down, popped a Christmas CD in, and started the slow drive through the neighborhood. Since a lot of other people had the same idea, our line of cars did break up and wandered through on their own. That did not dampen our experience at all. We got into the Christmas spirit, and we met some wonderful people. On the way home, we decided we wanted to attend another function. We were able to spend more time meeting and greeting at a Happy Hour at Uncle Buck’s Brewery & Steakhouse on Thursday, December 17. About fifty people gathered for drinks upstairs. There was never a moment wondering we didn’t know what to talk about and we could always find a friendly face. Bill and I stayed for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know some of the members of the club. On our way home, we decided what our New Year’s resolution would be: Have too much fun going to Porsche Club functions and getting to know a lot of great people. Thank you, Porsche Club and Happy New Year.

Happy Hour at Uncle Buck’s Brewery & Steahouse by Chris Christensen

W

e had a good turn-out for this month’s Happy Hour – about 30 of us braved the cooler temperatures to share in a drink or two followed by dinner. Since Uncle Buck’s is adjacent to the massive Bass Pro Shop, we suspect there might have been some holiday shopping going on with a few of our membership. Although, we could not find any auto or Porsche related items – we did survey the huge collection of fishing gear, guns and other outdoor related items. How about a deer blind or a boat for your favorite sports person? Their inventory is significant – they must have close to the largest selection of guns in the state of Texas! Previously known as Big Buck’s Brewery and Steakhouse, the store changed ownership a few years back – and now is known as Uncle Buck’s Brewery and Steakhouse. Uncle Buck’s is now owned and operated by the Bass Pro Shop. As the story goes, Uncle Buck was the uncle of Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris who took young Johnny fishing. I guess it left an impression on the current owner and hence the new name was formed in honor of Johnny’s “Uncle Buck.” The lodge-themed restaurant and brewery is open every day from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. The menu features an assortment of soups and salads, beef and buffalo burgers, sandwiches, and entrees including grilled shrimp, chicken fried chicken, chicken fried steak, and spicy venison sausage pasta. Uncle Buck’s offers their own brews like White River Beer, Fallow Kolsch, Whitetail H e f e - We i z e n , A m e r i c a n Sportsman Ale, Mike Brodigan, Randy Csanadi, & Mike Lockas RedHead Ale, enjoying time together Captain’s Choice Ale, Uncle Buck’s Scotch Ale, Black Tail Stout, and Black Cherry Shandy. We had a new Maverick member join us this month – Bob Bowen. Bob recently retired and as a gift to himself purchased a new 2010 911 Turbo. That’s the way to ease into retirement in our view. Since Bob was a pilot we just somehow know he will enjoy all aspects of that new turbo – we’re sure of that! It is interesting at least for this writer and I might add Porsche neophyte - to discuss aspects of various Porsches. I had that opportunity to get into some details with a 914 24

photos by Bob Lewis

owner – John Leto. His knowledge of the 914 is extensive and although I came close to buying one in my earlier years, it seems like a great car to have for all around fun and of course for the occasional autocross. Perhaps we might start giving some more thought to a DE and then auto-crossing a bit. Who has a car they want to donate? All kidding aside, the essence of owning a Porsche in part is to drive it as it was designed to be driven…I suppose there Linda Bambina & Patty Housewright would be no argument discussing our upcoming Round Up from our membership on that – right? Well, as the holiday’s roll around we want to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season and Happy New Year. We hope to see you all at the next Happy Hour. Feburary 18 we will be at an old, old favorite, I Fratelli at 7701 N MacArthur Blvd @ IH635 in Irving. Cheers everyone and see you in 2010.

My Autocross Journey By Tannia Dobbins

S

Photos by Charlie Davis

even years ago (gads, yes, seven!) if anyone would have told me that I would become the 2010 Autocross Chair, I would have stared at them in bewilderment. For starters, way back then, I had never heard of an “autocross” and secondly, couldn’t have fathomed managing the event for an awesome PCA club! However, in 2003 my autocross journey did begin … and what a wild ride it has been.

then completing the course with a respectable time. But it was Wendy Shoffit who captured the problem when she said “there seems to be something not right with the back end.” See, it really wasn’t just my driving. LOL.

My first exposure to autocrossing came through the man I was dating. Some of you now know him as my husband, Jeff in the “blackish” car number 81. Jeff told me he had a Porsche but it was in the shop in St. Louis getting some body enhancements done (we both lived in Missouri). Uh huh. Sure. I had been over to his house and I saw no evidence of a Porsche. In fact, he had a truck and that was all. After several months, while I didn’t really think he had a Porsche, I did realize that he was going crazy since he wasn’t able to “autocross” for a year now – and then he did what he had to do … bought a car while the other one was in the shop. His “other” car turned out to be a Subaru STi. Within a week or two of bringing the car home my first car date with him was to an autocross hosted by the Ozark Mountain Region SCCA club. While I really don’t I am in the passenger seat while my instructor remember much (Jeff Herrmann) teaches me not to run over the about the day, I do pylons! remember that I did well enough to take home a driving trophy. It was the ‘newbie’ class but I was ecstatic! Thus began the slippery slope :-)

My next Porsche was a 2001 Boxster S. As I gained skills driving autocrosses What a very nice looking car. Too bad it was a mess to drive especially for a beginning and time trials, I autocrosser. was becoming a very decent driver indeed. Over the last few years I found myself at the top or near the top of my class every year. Of course I have had lots of help along the way. True, the Maverick club is about the cars – but it is much more about the people. Some particular Maverick members who have helped me learn how to drive include two wonderful ladies Wendy Shoffit and Jan Mayo. From each I learned something new every time they got in the car with me. And I wouldn’t be the driver I am today without the help of Mike Lockas. Mike’s instruction in the car is great and he has let me jump in his car numerous times. Sometimes it really does finally come together when you see it from the passenger view. And I can’t forget Rocky Johnson, who sat in as my ‘advanced instructor’ for time trials. Parting of their collective wisdom enables new folks like me to enjoy the sport more.

That next year we moved to Texas. Yes, Jeff did really have a Porsche that was finally brought home from the shop and it made the trip with us to Kempner. After our arrival one of the first things we did was scope out all the driving clubs for a habit had to be fed. Ultimately we found the Maverick Club. That is when my next problem started. It seemed that I really needed my own Porsche. Not long after I was sporting a 1987 911 slant nose (turbo look). What a great looking car! The problem was that it wasn’t such a great autocross or time trial car. I was just learning how to do time trial events but spent more time spinning 26

So, it is now with sadness that I move on from my Boxster S. Just today it now passes from my hands to another. (Todd, I hope it brings you as much excitement and good times as it did me; it is an awesome car.) With the 2010 season around the corner I will start all over again and have to learn to drive yet another Porsche -- this time a 1987 944 My favorite autocrossing car. I will really miss Turbo (951). my 2001 Boxster S, but all good things must Yikes! I keep come to an end ... now to conquer the 951! hearing they do not make good autocross cars ... but they make great track cars. We shall see about that!

Autocrossing in 2010 By Tannia Dobbins

A

s the 2009 autocross season came to a close I must admit I felt a sense of trepidation. Sure, the winter break means little driving time, but before long 2010 would be here and then I would have to actually engage again! This time however, it wasn’t just in the capacity of driving well ... it was in the role of managing well. You see, sometime in the fall I must have been home enjoying a cool one when Robyn Howard called in her peppy voice and said “Yes, you can do it! And I will help you.” And thus it begins. Before talking excitement about the 2010 season I would like to thank Christy Payne for an awesome 2009 season. As she passes the baton (and the Miss AX Crown) I know I will have big shoes to fill. I really do not know where to start, but she did transfer over the magic binder which promises to hold all the secrets to managing a great season. So...off I go! Er, sort of. The first order of business is to line up the events. This isn’t as easy as it seems. First you put the yearly calendar in front of you, and then you cross off all the holidays such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, July 4th weekend, etc. Only die-hard fans will show up for these events - or me since I figure it is a great way to celebrate the holiday! Next you have to cross off all the other important club dates (e.g., Club Race, DE Weekends, Parade, time trials), but you have to wait for them to be scheduled. Then you get the call -- NOW! The trick here is to find the right window to start nailing down the AX dates which is AFTER several Maverick events have been set, but BEFORE all the other clubs in the DFW area have started their scheduling. Whew. Now I have the possible weekend dates available and I am armed with Christy’s valuable notebook of venues, names, and numbers so it is time to start the scheduling. After testing my telephone and messaging skills I am finally rewarded with a sensible list of candidate event dates spread around the metroplex. But wait! Need to juggle again due to MSR windows for TT events. Nonetheless, I am happy to report that we have a full, confirmed schedule for 2010! Why is the scheduling really important and worth talking about? Simply that we want as many Mavericks as possible to come out and enjoy our autocross events! I don’t want to hear excuses that other events took priority. For those of you that have moved on to other driving venues, maybe it is time to reconnect with a different type of driving ... time to refresh your skills. And, even more importantly, we could really use your advanced driving skills. New autocrossers become better by learning from the best.

If you have never run at an autocross this is the year for it! Most people find it very exhilarating and often come back for more. One of the reasons I hear from people about why they don’t want to autocross is that it will “tear up the car.” Nonsense!!! I know many autocrossers that come out event after event and never have any problems with the car. In fact, many of our ‘regulars’ use their daily drivers ... no fancy seats or harnesses, no enhanced tires or brakes. In other words, the car is equipped for street driving an‑d nothing special for autocrossing! Most autocross instructors will tell you the best part about autocrossing is learning to drive your car well -- without any changes! The point behind autocrossing is to drive the car as fast as you can to get the fastest time you possibly can; all while keeping the car completely in control. That means learning how to drive your car to the best of your ability ... and in a place where you cannot do any damage to the car. Personally, I think the reason a lot of people don’t want to come out and try an autocross is because they know that the only damage is likely to be to their ego. Did I say that!! Yes, indeed. As I always say, anyone can drive fast on a straight road. It takes skills and practice to learn how to drive fast in the corners. Porsches were made just for this -- they were not made to sit in the garage and for playing it safe. I look forward to the 2010 season with much anticipation. While I am the formal AX chair for 2010, I do have a sidekick and I thank Robyn Howard for taking on this role. Get ready. March is just around the corner. Come out and say ‘hi’. And, yes, bring your Porsche. :-)

Tech Corner by Ed Mullenix

A

h, the holidays are finally over! Between holiday shopping, parties, and a bad cold, I missed the deadline for my column last month. BAD EDDIE! December is always a busy time for just about everyone. When the December 5th Tech Session was scheduled, there were no competing events. As it turned out, the Fort Worth Toy Run and a grand opening found their way to the same day. Several of you still managed to be at Park Place Porsche to view the ins and outs of the new Panamera. Special thanks to Jimmy Hayes, the shop foreman at PPP, and Paul Berman, the service manager, who devoted their time answering questions and showing us the Panamera. We were again delighted to see a Carrera GT there being serviced. Even with something as exotic as a Carrera GT, it’s comforting to know that Porsche attempts to keep ownership costs reasonable. The GT there needed a clutch assembly (seven disc clutch). Porsche offers an exchange clutch assembly for only $14,000! Hey, expensive is relative to what your checkbook can handle! Anyway, a good time was had by all and the techs at PPP enjoyed the extra bagels and donuts that I brought. The next Tech Session will be hosted by Autoscope on Denton Drive in Dallas on March 13 starting at 9:00 A.M.

28

Steve Fordham has offered their two dynos for the club members to actually see how many “ponies” (or kilowatts for you metric-types) are available at that right side pedal. After the morning dyno pulls, Autoscope is hosting a short drive and LUNCH at Babe’s in Carrolton. Anyone interested in the dyno pulls or lunch, RSVP at Techcorner@mavpca.org. SPELLS, INCANTATIONS, & REPAIR PROCEDURES This past month, I’ve had six ’74-’89 911s in the shop for loose steering wheels (not just a little loose, feels like the wheel is gonna come off in your hands!). Turns out, cold weather and age exact a toll on the nylon spacer on the upper steering column bearing. The nylon spacer pretty much goes away leaving a 1.5mm gap between the steering shaft and the bearing race. Two solutions exist. One is to completely remove and disassemble the steering column and replace the bearing ($31 for the bearing and four hours of work). Or, my favorite, just remove the steering wheel (make sure you mark the wheel and steering shaft with a punch so the wheel/shaft relationship is preserved), remove whatever is left of the nylon spacer (use a small slot screwdriver and push the remaining nylon into the column housing) and install a $10 metal spacer (Porsche part #: 928 347 739 02) where the old Ed nylon spacer used to be.
