e’ve got a busy 2011 ahead! By the time you read this, we will have had our All Member Party to kick off the New Year. Plus, we had a Tech Session in January on brake maintenance, and one coming on February 19th on Self-Teching your car for DE (see the ad later in this Slipstream). Our Happy Hours continue to be extremely well-attended – hope to see you at the Fox Sports Grill in Plano on Feb. 17th. Our Board Meeting had a number of very positive reports, AND the beginning of discussions on our Maverick Region’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. Our committee will be forming over the next two months, so if you’re interested in contributing, please contact me and I’ll be sure to pass along your interest to the soon-to-be-formed committee. Also at our board meeting, Mike Farrar offered to help our Drivers’ Education Equipment Manager, Luke Edson, with the equipment. Thanks, Mike! Brendan Eagan joined us to see how he could contribute. I invite each of you to join us at a board meeting which includes a free dinner and see what we do and see how you could give a little back. Just RSVP to social@mavpca.org and we’ll take care of the rest. Our next Board Meeting is Wednesday, March 2nd. Speaking of Drivers’ Education (D.E.), our new schedule has been posted for 2011. Our first event is March 12-13 at Eagles Canyon Raceway just outside Denton. I hope to see you there.

Mav of the Month Who is more deserving of our Mav of the Month award than Mike Brodigan – our larger than life president, for the last two years, who has kept the focus on our core values: the people and activities of the Maverick Region and our Hope Shelter charity? Congratulations, Mike, and thank you for all you’ve done as president, and will continue to do as our new Drivers’ Education chair!

2

For being the Maverick of the Month, The Silver Fox in Grapevine is giving Mike dinner for two at their award winning steak house. So THANK YOU, Mike, for all you do! John

Chris has been a Maverick for over ten years and owned a 2000 Boxster S. He recently sold it with tears in his eyes… Welcome, dream car; a 2010 Carrera Cab. Now that the tears have dried up, he’s having a blast! Here’s to sharing the fun in our events with many Mav’s throughout 2011.

John enjoys DE’s, Happy Hours, Porsche Parade and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab so that’s how it got in his blood.

oday is the day to make a difference! We all have the opportunity to make a difference if we so choose. We can start in the garage, with a neighbor, even in our community. Let’s work together as a community, a tight knit, well oiled, German machine and make a difference. We can see the changes we have shared in as we look back at the changes that have taken place at the HOPE Shelter. We can also see a difference on page four with our newly elected officers, and if you look real closely, you will see a blank space, a space waiting for you to step up and make a difference in our Region. Please consider joining us as we begin planning for the Region’s 50th year anniversary. It’s going to be an awesome event! As you enjoy this month’s issue, I hope you notice some of the changes taking place. We’ve added the number of members to the New Wheels page so you can see how our region is continually growing. Even in today’s environment, we added 22 new members to our roster which only indicates to me, that this club is about the people. Thank you Alan Bambina, one of our past Presidents, for coining the phrase, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!”

Maverick Minutes Secretary, Madhu Rao

M

ake it smooth. That’s my first thought as I compose these meeting minutes. Lisa Steele has been so helpful to me by creating a smooth transition for me into this role. This is a great opportunity to say Thank You to Lisa for all of your past, present, and future contributions to the Maverick Region. The January meeting briefly reviewed 2010 accomplishments and focused on plans for 2011-2012. The 2011 Maverick Region Board Officers were installed and include: President – John Hamilton, Vice-President Chris Christensen, Treasurer – Jim Falgout, and Secretary – Madhu Rao. A brief bio of each officer and their contact information appears on page 4 in this edition of Slipstream. Please contact us with your comments, suggestions, and questions. As President, John opened the meeting by thanking the previous officers and chairs for a great year. He then outlined the need to create a culture of inclusion, fun, and fellowship in all Maverick Region activities. John described

a goal to increase the involvement amongst our nearly 1800 members through a strategy of Fun & Fifty. The fun part is synonymous with how this Region approaches our events, no explanation needed there! The fifty relates to our region’s 50th anniversary coming up in 2012. John noted that a subcommittee will be established to help plan this wonderful event and asked for any potential volunteers. Those responding “yes” included Mike Farrar (see below), BJ Harvey, Christy Payne, Lisa Steele, Richard Bradley and Madhu Rao. Additional information is forthcoming. Lastly, John mentioned that an update on the Hope Shelter would be available later this quarter. As Treasurer, Jim reported that “we have money.” Jim requested budgets from the activity chairs to facilitate his planning and review work for 2011. Those in attendance thanked Jim for his leadership in this role. Driving right along, Robyn and Travis Howard (aka “Gridmaster T”) shared the upcoming Autocross and Time Trial (AX/TT) events in 2011 and their interest in finding a large outdoor venue to host future events. If you are aware of such a venue please contact them! AX events are currently scheduled for March 19th and April 9th, 2011. Please check the Maverick Region website and future issues of Slipstream for information. Pat Friend noted that our sponsor relationships and payments continue to develop to a very high level. This may be due to the value associated with Slipstream and our Maverick Region activities. He noted that the Goodie Store is running smoothly. Shifting gears, Ed Mullenix mentioned two upcoming Tech sessions in Q1 2011. The first one is on January 15th at Autobahn Porsche in Fort Worth. The second is on February 19th at Boardwalk Porsche in Plano. These are great opportunities to learn more about your Porsche from individuals who are passionate about their Porsches. Richard Bradley, the managing editor of Slipstream, is really Happy! The January 2010 Slipsteam includes two features about Maverick Region Happy Hours. Great news! Richard also noted the Drivers’ Education ad on page 9 of the January edition of Slipstream should read; March 12-13, 2011. You really didn’t want to wait until October, did you? Christy Payne, the Social Chair, noted that the total proceeds from Founders Day exceeded $3800! Total attendance was 90. (Thank You to Christy and everyone involved for organizing such a wonderful event.) Christy also provided an overview of the January All-Member party and shared some very interesting future venues under consideration. Christy also presented the 2010 Maverick Region Top Driver award to Robyn Howard (female) and

8

Ray Kelly (male). Congratulations! Given the caliber of drivers in this region this is a great achievement. Mike Brodigan is DE man this year. Seriously, he really is! Mike is the new Drivers’ Education (DE) chair this year. He noted the strong attendance in 2010 and thanked everyone for their help to make these events great. His vision for 2011 is to increase DE participation. His first proposal is to assign mentors to DE participants. His second relates to offering a promotional incentive for advanced drivers to sustain their participation throughout the year. John Harvey chairs the Sunday Drive events this year. Arranging these drives requires lots of planning. He and last year’s chair, Clint Blackman, received recognition for doing so. John noted that 25 drivers took part in the December 2010 Holiday Lights Tour. He also noted that March 6th will be the first Sunday Drive this year. He also presented a concept idea of an overnight Saturday/Sunday in the regional area. John Harvey and Mike Brodigan shared information from our Rally Chair Carey Spreen. John H. noted that he and Carey would be conducting site visits to evaluate locations for a Rally event. Mike B. noted that Carey is writing an article about Richard Selcer and the history of the award bearing Mr. Selcer’s name. Carey welcomes any additional information from Maverick Region members about Mr. Selcer.

Chris Christensen was a Happy man too! He noted that all of the Happy Hour restaurants were already secured for 2011. Some of the venues are favorite Maverick Region locales and some are new to the Region. He looks forward to handling the procedural details associated with our Region and noted a smooth transition in responsibilities from Bryan Bell. Maverick Moments. Since this is a member-driven organization based on transparency the Board encourages members to attend the monthly board meetings. Meetings are typically held on the first Wednesday of the month. Attending this meeting were two members, Mike Farrar and Brendan Egan. Having been a member for 10 years, Mike attended his first meeting in December to determine how he could ‘give-back’ to the region. At this meeting Mike volunteered to help out Luke Edson (the DE equipment manager) as well as serve on the 50th anniversary committee. Thank you very much! Brendan Egan also attended and mentioned that his goals were to meet more people in the Region and participate in more activities. Sounds great, Brendan. We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events this year. Meeting adjourned 8:10 pm.

Hope for Christmas 2010 By Clara Lewis

I

t was a happy and jolly December 18th as we Mavericks celebrated Christmas with the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. For the second year in a row we met at the First Presbyterian Church in Mineral Wells. Thanks to the generosity of Rev. Paton Wall and his congregation.

As Santa’s sleighs (driven by Chris Rev. Paton Wall with Santa Hamilton and Clara Lewis) arrived with gifts, Lisa Huffaker and her merry elves had been at work. The tree was trimmed, decorations adorned the dining hall, tables were set, and a bountiful array of food was inviting.

Photos by James Gunaca & Dave Frick

and gave them to the mothers and children. To finish the fun filled day, Jean Frick with her violin led us in Christmas Carols. It wouldn’t have felt like a complete Christmas without Jean’s talents. Maybe next Christmas you will be blessed at seeing the happy faces of the mothers and their children at the Huffaker Hughes Hope House Christmas Party.

Lisa Huffaker & Santa Jean Frick leading songs

At the appointed time “High Noon,” Santa flew down to give gifts to 17 mothers and 23 anxious children, residents and past residents of Hope Shelter. Back by popular demand was the STV Almrausch Bavarian Dancers. This is the second year they have given of their time and talents of music, Annika & Ethan dance and song. Keesecker,& Alyssa Kramer Three children of this STV Almrausch traveling group were Bavarian Dancers so touched by their experience of last year that they said they wanted to do more. And more they did. Starting in January 2 0 1 0 , Annika Keesecker 12 and Alyssa Kramer 10 started baby sitting and performing other jobs small and large to save money for the Hope Children’s Christmas. Ethan Keesecker, 7 took money from his savings account to participate in this fund. Parents Rich and Susan Keesecker matched the total funds raised. The children purchased WalMart gift cards 10

A great time by all enjoying the music & gifts.

PushiNg the PerformANce eNveloPe.

I purchased my 911 back in December 2006 from Park Place Porsche. I’ve always driven German cars, but never a Porsche. Randall, the parts manager, introduced the PCA world to me. After the first try I was hooked, and since then, I’ve done frequent DE events with Park Place. Park Place has, by far, the best service department. The technicians are very skilled, friendly and informative, and their attention to detail is superb. It is also a comforting feeling that many of them are involved in motor sports, which takes the guesswork out of performance upgrades. They’re unlike any other dealership I’ve worked with in recommending and helping you not only with Porsche parts and accessories, but also after-market products to improve performance while maintaining your warranty. Among the upgrades I’ve made are a short shifter, spacers, a high flow filter, and performance brake pads, but my favorite changes are the suspension modifications and straight flow exhaust, because of the performance and sound. I’ve been really impressed with the whole family of Park Place. From service to parts, everyone really works together to meet all your needs at great prices. Another thing I really like about Park Place Porsche is that they really focus on building a relationship. Going to Park Place doesn’t feel like going to a dealership; it feels like a fun place to hang out and talk cars. The overall experience at Park Place has been above and beyond any other car dealerships, and I’m definitely going to be a lifelong customer.

A “Sound” Review By Clint Blackman

A

s many of you recall, I got to meet many, many famous Porsche people at the grand opening of the Porsche Museum last January. Dieter Landenberger was one of my favorites. Dieter is the Deputy Director at Porsche in charge of the Porsche Archives located on the upper floors of the Museum. The Museum has a library of every photograph taken of a Porsche...every movie... every article..... everything that ever said Porsche! (They even have copies of our Slipstream!) Dieter is the author of several Porsche books including Die Marke, Porsche Chronicle, The Porsche Way and others. Dieter recently published his new book, Porsche Sounds. Porsche Sounds is terrific! Dieter has produced a collection of incredible Porsche SOUNDS from their most famous Porsche sportscars! This unique book contains outstanding stereophonic CD reproductions of thirty of Porsche’s finest engines from the Number 1 Roadster to the Panamera Turbo. The recordings are so fine that you can “feel” these great cars as they roar past you, “right to left” on the track. In addition to the Sounds CD, Dieter also included a collection of great “Performance” driving music...with “Can’t Slow Down” by Foreigner and other contemporary driving tunes. The third “Elegance” CD is a collection of terrific classical music that “waltzes you down the road.” Besides these great recordings... this collector quality, hard cover “Ear Book” is an outstanding collection of photographs from the Porsche Museum archives. 219 pages cover the 30 cars represented on the Sounds CD. The photos on each car include full color publicity photos, candid racing photos to photos that have not been seen in years. Page 5 is a thumbnail photo page of each car on the Sound CD that makes it easy to match each CD track to the specific Porsche auto. The book has a European flair as it is written in both German and English. This book is a “must have” for any Porschephile book collection. You can find Porsche Sounds on Amazon for $32.97! It really is a great book.

Porsche Sounds...There is no substitute for the sound of a Porsche!

Cliff’s Ramblings: “off the wall department” of my mind, I ramble. By Cliff Blackshear

I

originally intended this article to be an interview/ramble about the Flying Lizard race team and the 2011 season. Our workshop’s resident Lizard (Abel Jimenez) has been away for many, many weeks with the team preparing for 24 Hour Le Mans race and ALMS GT2 season. Plus I know from talking with him they have prepared a prototype for the Grand Am 24 Hour race and it has been laborious to develop to now. Getting the car ready has been grueling for them. I will have to delay that article for now. I hit a writers’ block on how to write it and did not get with Abel soon enough. Now I have something put together for the article, but do not have permission from Flying Lizard PR department to send in. Hummmm… He showed me some great pics he has taken in the shop, but can’t share any without proper permission, most understandable. I would not submit anything here without the official permission of the Flying Lizard PR department. A rough draft has been submitted to them and I’m awaiting permission for it as well as photos I like from the prep shop. So from the “off the wall department” of my mind, I ramble. Here is something I have been thinking about for quite some time. I’ve been pondering all the changes with our fuel injection systems a lot lately. Mainly I reach back to when I started and love how things have evolved; it is interesting to me. Porsche introduced mechanical injection way, way back. 911E I believe. Purists can get all upset if I do not know exact year etc. or list all the other cars that ran this system. I honestly do not care. I grew very intimate with this system, how it works, how to set it up etc., at 1 mile above sea level in Colorado. It was challenging to say the least. I learned how to make that system sing. Once correctly set up it needed little attention afterwards. T’s E’s and S 911’s all set up differently in that environment. It was a system designed to get HP at high R’s. At low revs it was dirty, and wasteful. The howl from a mechanical injected E or S at wide open throttle between 4500 and redline is still one of the most awesome sounds an engine can make as far as I’m concerned. In 1972, I went to training for the introduction of the 1973 911T. The car had 1 battery instead of 2 and introduced CIS injection. Mechanical injected and CIS injected cars were sold side by side for a short period afterwards. CIS injection was a huge change. It was fraught with early production problems. Porsche hammered us with training on the system over and over for years. The system became

pretty darned efficient. Introduction of oxygen sensing in 1980 really made it an environmentally friendly system. Yet that system was quite flawed in retrospect. It was the leading edge technology of the day though. Then Digital Motor Electronics (DME) was introduced and is still with us today. 1987 944S was first to have adaptive control. Disconnect the battery on this car, then reconnect, start engine, and it will run erratically (especially at idle). Yet after a few minutes it adapts to all inputs and smooths out. The 1984 Carrera was basically bullet proof. We just had no problems with it. It ran clean. HP output was always as designed and EPA was kept happy. Porsche never stopped pushing the boundaries. More HP while meeting emission mandates was their theme. It has morphed into an amazing system too. LSU O2 sensors, direct injection fuel metering that we can see and monitor in micro grams per injection stroke. My little blue-collar mind loves this stuff. Today the injection system constantly strives to put fuel and ignition moments exactly on point for both environmental needs and power demands. If you drive a new 997 GT3RS in heavy traffic today it will stay on lean limit, putting out near nothing as far as carbon monoxide, hydro carbon, oxides of nitrogen, pollutants are concerned. Grandma this car around and the combustion chambers will not care. They will stay clean and be ready for combat any time. It will run smooth under any conditions. Take that same car to the track and it will just scream with awesome performance. It does not get any better than that, period! Direct injection combined with the trusty DME has been an amazing system. It makes the combustion process so much more efficient. Combine a very efficient injection process with a monitoring system that constantly monitors input data, then edits all output fuel and ignition point data in micro seconds and it is pretty amazing to witness. Today we can go to an “actual value menu” and see the edits the system is making. Witness the combustion process monitoring, determine if required exhaust gas output is “on point” and what small edits were made in injection stroke, cam timing, and ignition points. When everything is inside the design boundaries the engine is making all the HP it can, while burning as little fuel as possible, thus creating the smallest amount of emissions possible. When a fuel stroke edit is created we can see it. If the engine is a little lean on one bank a bit of fuel is added to compensate and maximum efficiency is once again reached. If its too rich then a little fuel is taken away to keep the combustion process correct. There are numbers we can look at that tell us what changes were made to keep everything stoichiometric…….. continued on pg 20 February 19

Cliff’s Ramblings:

continued

The changes in these systems always come with other interesting changes, too. Piston crown shape is ever changing to facilitate and sometimes dictate injection/combustion processes. Getting the air to the combustion chambers via intake manifolds, turbo chargers, intercoolers, air cleaners, intake scoops, is constantly evolving and Porsche refers to this as “Charge Air” or “Cylinder Filling.” Intake manifold air columns that are constantly messaged with “manifold expansion technology,” are variable turbine technology, etc. It’s completely amazing what these engineers continue to develop year after year. Trying To Not Early Apex In Life!

Member Spotlight: Tom Greer Andrea Bell, Public Relations Chair his month’s new member spotlight is on Tom Greer. When I initially contacted Tom about this story, he hesitated because he felt like he was boring. After some encouragement from his wife however, he finally agreed to participate. Tom retired after thirty-one years as a police officer, but said he got bored within a few months. So he now works for another

T

police department reviewing red light videos and as a desk officer. During his years in law enforcement, he has worked patrol, narcotics, and various other plainclothes assignments. He was also a police emergency driving instructor and he taught motorcycle safety for several years in the DFW area. Tom said that he has always wanted a Porsche, but until recently just had other places to put his money. He and his wife purchased a 2008 Cayman a few months back and say they love it. He said, “We’re planning on taking it on

weekend getaways. I still ride my Harley, but the Cayman is the first choice now when we go someplace.” Tom is a native Texan and has basically lived in the DFW area all of his life. (He has lived in Garland, Dallas, and now is in Fort Worth.) His father was in the Air Force so he moved around in the States and even lived in England briefly. He attended school in Denison. He then joined the Marine Corps and spent time in the Philippines. Tom keeps busy with three daughters and three grandchildren all living in the DFW area. Tom said he also enjoys traveling, reading, and F1 racing. However he added, he spends most of the time chasing the grandkids! (I can almost see him grinning from here.) I think you will agree that Tom is definitely not boring and I owe his wife a big thank you for giving him “the look” that helped convince him to be in our Spotlight! I imagine he has all kinds of stories to share – just ask him. Please look for him and his wife at future Maverick events and welcome them into our family. If you are a new member and would like to be considered for our monthly “SPOTLIGHT” feature, please contact me at pr@mavpca.org. February 23

Happy Hour - Love and War in Texas Chris Christensen, Happy Hour Chair

A

cold day may have deterred a few from attending Happy Hour; in

addition, there was an error in Slipstream indicating Happy Hour would be held at the Love and War, Plano location. Since there are only two locations in the Metroplex, it is hard to get it wrong, but mistakes happen. We apologize and hope no one is too upset with us. We will try harder next time, hopefully preventing this from happening again.

Ethan is slightly taller than his Dad, we know (Dad) looks up to him for good reason. Next month we will hold Happy Hour at the Fox Sports Grill located at 5741 Legacy Drive, Plano, TX. 75024 – tel. 972-312-1369. The BMW club meets there, so it should be good (right?). Sorry about that, but they have been meeting there for years. How bad could it be?

Finally, I want to thank all of those who have joined in making Happy Hour a Come out and join in the fun! success in 2010. We hope that our dinners will continue and more of you will come out and meet new members. This was our first Happy Hour at Love and War; we “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”… well okay, the cars will schedule it again next year since all (Happy Hour) are pretty nice too. Y’all take care and see you when we get restaurants have been back….in March. selected (please check the Maverick Calendar) for this year. We had thirty hardy Mavericks come out and join in the camaraderie- the food and service was very John Hamilton with Robin, good-definitely a repeat Richard & Ethan Bradley restaurant. This writer will be out of town next month; John Hamilton has graciously accepted responsibility and is taking charge of Happy Hour. It will also be a first time visit to the Fox Sports Grill - there is a private room reserved for the occasion. Welcome to new members; Bruce and Denise Moore; they own a 2010, 997 4S Cab. We look forward to seeing you both at future Happy Hours. Denise and Bruce Moore enjoying their first club activity! It was great visiting with our Editor and his family; Robin and their son Ethan. Great to have families join in the fun, and since 24

It Really IS the People! Tannia Dobbins, AX Chair

2

010 is over and the 2011 season is just around the corner. Yes, I still have much to do to get my car ready. What do I want to upgrade now before the season starts? Do I want to go ahead and get a set of tires? I also have to make sure that all the “To Do” items are done for getting ready for the AX season. Did I get all the Tannia Dobbins dates lined up for the events this year? Do they conflict with other Maverick events? Do they conflict with non-Porsche club driving events? Will people turn out this year? Will those that did last year be back ? Did they enjoy the events? And, did others get their cars fixed? For those of us that participate in Maverick’s Autocross and Time Trial events there is a lot to do to get ready for events days. Tires, check. Mike Lockas Brake fluid, check. Helmet, check. Car numbers, check. Register, check. Pay, check. Hat, check. The list goes on and on. And, when events are over, we wait anxiously for the scores to be posted so we can see who had the fastest time of the day, fastest in class, etc. Yes, this is all FUN! Truth be told, we do focus on the results and the journey to the acclaimed “Top Driver” award. However, today that is not my focus as I want to recognize the dedicated individuals who do all of the above, but also help make these events fun and available for car enthusiasts to enjoy - both for Maverick members and other local clubs. Without Travis Howard them, there would be no Autocross and Time Trial events. It is about the cars; but, it is also about the dedicated volunteers who consistently and unselfishly roll up their sleeves to help continue the AX and TT traditions! If you are not that familar with the events, you might remember the cars they drive more than the faces behind the cars -- especilly since their cars often get more exposure in 26

Slipstream. So, now you get to take a look at the people behind the cars! Travis Howard, TT Chair, had some interesting words not long ago when he mentioned that as he volunteered he didn’t really think about his “exit strategy.” I Carey Spreen guess not since he is the Chair for the 2011 season, too! I, for one, am glad. Travis is always there, with a smile, and will do whatever he needs to do to help out at the events - TT or AX alike. Carey Spreen doesn’t have an official role in the AX and TT events, but his absence would be greatly noticed. Carey always helps clean up the course and has on every occasion has said “sure” without a second thought when I’ve asked if he could be our chief driving instructor for the day. Mike Lockas is responsible for the AX and TT worker assignments but he always helps in any way he can - often instructing others, helping with course setup and cleanup, etc. He can always be counted on and does so graciously. Chuck McCoy is another person that doesn’t have a formal role. But, that doesn’t stop him from contributing to the overall success of the season. I

Chuck McCoy

think that Chuck is always there! He helps with “cone management,” instructs, and helps do tech inspections. Richard Diller is our resident “Guard Dog” taking on the role of watching over our gear and cars while we are off sleeping in our dry, warm hotel rooms, grabbing lunch, or enjoying the company of the club members at dinner after Richard Diller the events. Thank you, Richard. Also, special thanks to Carole for the great cupcakes! Robyn Howard didn’t have formal role in 2010, unless you

It Really IS the People! continued really want to count keeping me in line. Literally, she was the force behind me getting the schedule out, the awards completed, and, did I mention talking me into the job of AX Chair? Hmmm. Lesson here: Do not answer the phone when Robyn calls :-)

feeds us occasionally? Hmmm. Better not let that word get out.

Robyn Howard

Jeff Herrmann is our “tech inspector” so he seems to be busy buzzing around making sure everyone else is ready to drive - before getting his own car ready. He always helps breakdown the course and, most of the time, is the last to leave the event when the day is done. He also helps Richard as the backup for “Guard Dog” duty. Darron Shaffer was noticeably absent during the 2010 season, but that didn’t stop him for answering the phone and patiently helping us newbies Jeff Herrmann figure out the timing equipment (again). It only took me the whole season lots of Darron’s patience, but I think I FINALLY know what to do with the gear. Charlie Davis, our esteemed Truxster driver, and resident photographer. Charlie has slowed the pace lately but that doesn’t mean his contributions Darron Shaffer have. In fact, it was Charlie that gave me Truxster driving lessons ... objects flying out the door and all. The good news is that we managed to actually find them the next day when picking up the course! Kristi Kelly gets special recognition -- since she doesn’t actually drive in the events. She comes out to support Ray Charlie Davis and often times helps us post or work timing when we are short handed. And, did I mention that she also has a nice warm trailer and

Michael Pelletier probably has one of the most challenging jobs - TT and AX registrar. While he runs the job out of his Boxster, unlike Andrea Bell who seemed to have a whole office setup, he does manage to get it all done and Kristi Kelley remembers who did what, who still owes, who needs to be classified, etc. Thank you, Michael. This would not be complete without mentioning others including those that are not Porsche drivers! We have lots of other drivers attend our events and take part in the rivalries, and many of these drivers contribute to the success of the season as well. Special mention goes to Mitch Williams, James Wilkinson, and Joshua Dexter. Michael Pelletier They may not make every event, but when they do you can count on them helping anyway they can. They will make ice runs, setup the course, breakdown the course, and even feed the whole lot occasionally! For those of you that came out and play with us, thank you! For those that contributed to the fun, you are appreciated. See you in 2011.

Tech Corner Ed Mullenix, Tech Chair

O

ur first ever tech session in Fort Worth was a huge success. Sixteen or so enthusiastic Porsche owners showed up at Autobahn on a chilly rainy Saturday morning. Our thanks to Beth Hooker, the service manager, and Jeff Knoebel, the shop foreman at Autobahn, for providing an informative session on brake system maintenance. Jeff fielded a lot of questions and everyone went away with a better understanding of brake operation and maintenance. Our next tech session will be at Boardwalk Porsche on February 19th before the DE season kicks off on March 13th. We will be discussing the pre-event tech sheet and its relationship to track safety. Spells, Incantations, and Repair Procedures This past month, I had three 964/993 Carrera variants in the shop with alternator problems. One failure is an anomaly, two a coincidence, and three is a trend. On the ’89 -’98 Carreras, Porsche separated the cooling fan and the alternator. They each have their own drive belt. To minimize the power loss of the cooling fan, it turns at a slower speed than the alternator. The fan housing is made of magnesium.

28

The engine case on which it mounts, is made of aluminum. Even though the two metals are neighbors on the periodic table, they are considered dissimilar metals and as such, subject to galvanic corrosion. Porsche also quit installing a ground cable on the alternators. The return path of all 110 amps of current produced by the alternator is via the engine case/fan housing interface. Take two dissimilar metals, 110 amps or so of electrical current, and a little moisture from the atmosphere, voila! A corrosion cell to die for. A remanufactured alternator on a 964 or 993 is more than $600. After replacing one of those babies on a 993, it still only produced 50 amps, way less than the 100+ amps specified. Thinking it was a faulty remain, I obtained and replaced another with the same result. Some head scratching, a lot of cussing, and several trouble-shooting tests later, I determined that the corrosion between the fan housing and the engine case was so severe as to limit the current transfer to only 50 amps. The correction was to take a rotary wire brush on an electric drill and remove the corrosion from both fan housing and engine case. To ward off “evil spirits” and to slow down future development of corrosion, I also installed a ground cable on the alternator and attached it to a case bolt. Of the three cars with charging system problems, only one really had a faulty alternator. Things that make you say “huh!” Ed
