Drifting John Hamilton, President

I

’ve been assured that warmer weather is on the way! And thank goodness for that as we begin our 50th year of driving events. Back in January, I was invited to join our Tourmeisters, John Harvey and Brendan Eagan, on a test-run of one of this year’s proposed Sunday Drives. It was an absolute blast as we discovered some new sights north and east of Dallas (did you know that there’s a town named “Frognot”?). It also gave me a renewed appreciation of what our volunteers do before the great events that go so smoothly: plotting the route(s) then driving the route while checking for construction and possible detours. They do a lot to make sure the drive is fun for all who come along. I’m really impressed! Watch the calendar for our next Sunday drive. It’s great for the whole family! Our Drivers’ Education (DE) program gets back in full swing on March 10th and 11th up at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Slidell (northwest of Denton). I know a lot of us have been waiting for months to get back in the swing. Registration is sure to be open by the time you read this so go to register.pca.org to sign up. Note: we’ll be under PCA > Maverick > Driving Events. It’s a great two days outdoors learning about your car, your driving skills and your fellow club members. What a rush! And our Autocross and Time Trial programs are about to start as well, so watch the calendar (mav.pca.org) for them.

2

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!!! Your Maverick Region is now in its 50th year! You’ll see a series of events and articles in Slipstream celebrating our history throughout the year. The FIRST big event is the FIFTY YEARS OF PORSCHE car show to be held on Saturday, April 28th. MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW!!! More details on that will be coming soon, but you’ll absolutely want to attend this spectacular event.

Mav of the Month Sometimes it’s the people behind the scenes who do their job so diligently year after year that they may be taken for granted and overlooked for recognition. Such is the case this month with our winner, Richard Diller. For years (nobody seems to know how many), Richard has been the one to come to the Autocross early, make sure everything is prepared, stay overnight at the track, and keep a watchful eye on everyone else’s possessions! Of course, he is one of the top Autocross performers as well, thanks to

his experience on the track. So this month we celebrate Richard Diller’s ongoing commitment to our club and the Autocross program. Thank you, Richard, for your outstanding support. Please take the time away from your passion to enjoy a nice dinner at the Silver Fox on us!

PCA Club Racing Announces 2012 Point Series Courtesty Porsche Club of America

P

CA is about to enter a new frontier with the Club Racing program – a National Championship Points Series! In addition, Jackson Motorsports Group and Michelin will be sponsoring the featured program within PCA Club Racing. The purpose of a PCA National Championship Points System is to determine a National Champion and a subsequent finishing order in each class for each calendar year, as well as a Zone Champion for each PCA Zone. Michelin Competition tires will be the specified tire for PCA Club Racing’s GTC-3, GTC-4 and GTC-5 classes which are made up of 996 and 997 Porsche Cup Cars in an “as delivered from the factory” form. Jackson Motorsports Group and Michelin’s support of PCA’s National Championship series brings a new level of competition and visibility to PCA’s already strong Club Racing program. Working with JMG and Michelin gives PCA Club Racing a strong support system and a proven high quality race tire to help provide a championship series which will be the ultimate in safe, fun and competitive racing. Michelin has been a longtime supporter of PCA’s

club racing program and their recent commitment to be the points series sponsor further illustrates how they intend to be beside PCA as we take our program to the next level. PCA Club Racing is delighted to be involved with JMG and Michelin and looks forward to a strong and lasting mutually beneficial partnership.

“The recent Club Racing partnership between Jackson Motorsports Group and PCA is the result of years of hard work, proven successes and PCA’s belief in our capabilities,” said Matt Caldwell, executive director, Account Service, Jackson Motorsports Group. “Jackson Motorsports Group is excited to partner with the PCA Club Racing GTC-3, GTC-4 and GTC-5 National Points Championship and provide the spec tires that will enable Porsches to truly thrive in their element.”

President John Hamilton C-817-907-7823 president@mavpca.org

John enjoys DEs, Happy Hours, the Porsche Parade, and other social events. He and wife Chris have owned Porsches since 1996 and joined the Club in 2002. John’s Grandfather in New Jersey owned a 1960 356B Coupe and later a 1965 356SC Cab which is how it got into his blood.

Tom has been a Maverick for over 30 years. He and his wife Barbara have owned a 914, fully restored a ‘71 911T Targa, and currently drive a Speed Yellow 996TT with license plate “NOOWAY”. Tom looks forward to participating in many Maverick Region track events in the years ahead.

Vice President

Madhu has been a member of the Maverick Region since 2009. He and his wife, Roshni, really enjoy meeting members of the club at various social and driving events. “It’s not the cars--it’s the people” that make this club great. He is currently driving a red 2008 Carrera S and loves it!

Jim joined Maverick Region in August, 2008. Jim drives a 1992 968 cabriolet, which is the second Porsche he has owned. Jim enjoys attending Maverick Region social and driving events.

S

o here is my cover story -- or should I say, my story about the cover. Of the newsletter that you are holding right now, that is. In keeping with Maverick Region’s 50th Anniversary theme, I thought it might be interesting to cover the cover with some covers. Of vintage issues of Slipstream. My first thought was to do a “countdown” of sorts, showing covers in reverse chronological order for the next few months, from new to old, from modern to classic, from 50 to 0. But as I started digging through the club’s archive of Slipstreams, I realized that I didn’t leave myself nearly enough time to look through them and pick out all of the possible candidate covers, and then narrow down the

choices to some ideal top ten. So I’m just going to wing it, believing that some time in the near future, I’ll have time to go through those neatly organized bins containing at least one (and usually two) copies of each issue of Slipstream since Volume 1, Number 1 came out in September of 1963. And yes, I can assure you that you’ll see that one on the cover sometime before November of this year. And let me take this opportunity to thank Linda Bambina, who has volunteered to assist me in acquiring content for Slipstream. I am still working on putting all of the pieces together during this transition, and I am grateful for her creativity, knowledge, and persistence, for they have made a difference already. Thanks Linda! Anyway, back to the issue at, or in, your hand: the photo on the cover-within-a-cover was taken at

the 20th Founders’ Day banquet in 1982, where eight former Region Presidents rallied around a ninth newly-elected leader. From left to right, they are: Don Spaulding, 1972; Barry Gibbs, 1973, 1978; Leon Cowan, 1974, 1976; Joan Gibbs (the PresidentElect for 1983); with Charlie Davis (1975, 2000) immediately behind her, even then showing his disdain for authority by making Joan wear some sort of “digital” headgear; John Halla, 1977; Milton Barley, 1979; Steve Kent, 1981; and Bob Blakewell, 1982. There were others before these folks, and we hope to introduce you to them as we get closer to our actual 50th birthday in November. In the meantime, though, get to know the current board members, because they want to get to know you!

Maverick Minutes

Madhu Rao, Secretary January 4, 2012

I

would like to wish a Happy 50th Anniversary Year to all fellow Mavericks. On behalf of the region we are looking forward to celebrating this with you. President John Hamilton opened the meeting with a welcome to all and a similar congratulatory note to all region members. He then turned the meeting over to Lisa Steele to vote on a 50th anniversary logo. You will begin seeing this very soon in Maverick Region materials. Social Chair Christy Payne then reviewed the upcoming schedule of events in Q1 2012 and the rest of this anniversary year such as Founders’ Day (the culmination of the anniversary celebration) on December 1, 2012, and the charity autocross event the next day. Wendy Shoffit added that some regions have had only one event to celebrate their anniversaries. We are very fortunate to have several such events to celebrate our anniversary. Additional events in Q1 2012 include the annual All Member Party to be held on January 28, and the “Love Your Porsche” Tech Session at RAC Performance on February 18. Christy mentioned that one of the discussions will be about the installation of a 3M Clear Bra for your Porsche. This is provided by Strata Shield. One lucky winner will get to have a Clear Bra installed on their car that day. Thank you to RAC and Strata Shield for your support.

8

Regarding the 50th Anniversary celebration, Linda Bambina mentioned that she is interested in compiling your club-related photos into a photobook. If you have any such materials or photos please contact her at bina42@tx.rr.com. A great way to keep on top of all of these events is to check the mav. pca.org website, Slipstream, or the monthly email communications from John Hamilton.

Driving forward, Brendan Eagan mentioned that 17 cars participated in the Holiday Lights drive on December 11 and all had a good time. He also described plans for a Sunday Driving Tour in 2012 in the Northwest Ft.Worth area. The drive will conclude at Joe T. Garcia’s in Ft. Worth. That sounds good to me too (notice a theme here?). For more information feel free to email him at tours@mavpca.org.

Membership Chair Lisa Steele presented an update regarding our membership numbers. The success of our strategies is evident as the region has added 140 members. Wow! That exceeds the year-to-date total of 125! This is a great year to introduce your friends to the Maverick Region as members. If you have any questions please contact Lisa at membership@mavpca.org.

Mike Farrar mentioned that several new couples have signed up to host Happy Hours in 2012. That is excellent. Mike also described a concept idea to create awareness for an organization called “My Possibilities”. For more information please visit www. mypossibilities.org/about-mp.

Treasurer Jim Falgout shared an update about the financial condition of the region and noted that budgets are due from the board chairs. He and John Hamilton asked the board chairs to critically review their expenses in 2012 to ‘drive’ the financial viability of the region. Mike Brodigan reviewed the 2012 Drivers’ Education events. The first event is March 10 at Eagles Canyon Raceway. The board discussed methods to sustain the high quality and driving experience for our drivers’ education events. Mike described a combined Drivers’ Education and Time Trial event on June 2 which sounds like a lot of fun to me. If you have any feedback or questions please contact Mike at de@mavpca.org.

Denny Payne, our webmaster, reminded everyone to submit interesting ideas and events to him and the appropriate board chairs. Wendy Shoffit reminded us that Maverick Region is fortunate to have several great anniversary events planned for this year. Oh wait, have I said that already? It is worth repeating! Travis Howard described plans to seek alternate Autocross (AX) locations here in the metroplex as some of our current venues are undergoing facility modifications. If you are aware of any such locations please contact him at tt@mavpca.org. The Autocross and Time Trial end of the season event will be held on January 14th. Stay tuned for the winners! Travis also discussed an idea about developing an Autocross school later this year. Sounds fun.

Carey Spreen is taking over as editor of Slipstream. He and outgoing Editor Richard Bradley are working closely on the transition. Congratulations and a BIG THANK YOU for accepting this role on behalf of the region. Richard thanks again for all of your help. Carey reminded the event chairs to submit their reports as early as possible for review and formatting into the magazine. He described plans for an upcoming ‘Hare and Hound’ rally in March 2012 (Ed. note - this event will probably

be pushed back to May). If you have an interest in helping Carey and others on the rally committee please contact him at rally@mavpca.org. These events are always a lot of fun. Rob Adams attended this meeting as a guest. I have enjoyed visiting with Rob at several Region events. He too shared enthusiasm for the upcoming 50th Anniversary and noted the great events this region puts forth. Rob thank you for attending and providing us your ‘member-centric’ perspective.

John Hamilton concluded the meeting by reminding everyone that nominations for the PCA Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, Public Service Awards, Newsletter, Website, and Region of the Year are due later this quarter. If you are aware of anyone who you would like to nominate, or would like to learn more, please contact John at president@mavpca.org. Or you can use the suggestion box on the mav.pca.org website to do so. Meeting adjourned at 8:31pm.

Linda Bambina, MRPCA 50th Anniversary Committee

A

s we begin 2012, Maverick Region turns 50 years old. As guest columnist for this year, I would like the thank Fran Ussery for our fantastic new tagline (“Driving Friendships for 50 Years”) and Christy Payne for our wonderful new logo (see below) celebrating this anniversary. Not content to have just one giant “gala” at the end of the year, and always ready-to-celebrate, our beloved Maverick Region will be having 50th-focused

10

events all year long! The 50th Committee has included many affordable, low-cost events that can include all members, past and present; old and young. This column will highlight those events, include interviews, Maverick Region fun facts, recount stories from our history, or relate special incidents from within our Maverick “family.” I’m looking for

members who would like to share their unique reasons or stories about getting involved in the club or stories about their Maverick friends offering assistance above and beyond the expected, or any other out-of-the-ordinary piece of oral history that you think others might enjoy reading. Here are a few interesting facts about our Region over these 50 years:

The 50th Committee has included many affordable, low-cost events that can include all members, past and present; old and young.

* The fifteen Charter Members (including wives) first met at the Fiesta Best Western Motel in Arlington, November 1962. Current membership: over 2,000 including affiliates.

* We have had thirty-five Presidents, many repeating the job for multiple years: James Shoffit a record four times, and two females: Joan Gibbs and Fran Ussery. * We have hosted the Porsche Parade twice, in 1987 and 2004 -- BOTH times with a female Chair. Teri Davis was the first female to ever lead a Parade in 32 years; and Jan Mayo was the 2004 Chair. We also had five Parade Chairs at the San Antonio Parade in 1997 and provided many teams to help out. * Charlie Davis, Joel Nannis and James Shoffit have all performed the Maverick “Hat Trick” -→been President, Slipstream Editor, and received the Selcer Award. * Slipstream Editor is by far the most demanding of all volunteer

jobs in the club. Several saints have stepped up and done it multiple years: Fran Ussery and Richard Bradley - three years each; Jan Mayo - four years; Teri Davis - five years; and Wendy Shoffit - six years! * Maverick Region has been a leader, instigator, forerunner, and trendsetter for many things that have been copied or adopted by other regions or at the National level. Among those things have been “Charlie’s Charts” (classifying cars for autocross), the first Parade (1987) that used computers not only for registration, but for ALL competitive events (again, a Charlie-plan.) We held the first R.C. car Parade event (indoors!); put on the first dual-course Parade Autocross; hosted the first Ice Cream Social after the Rally; it

was the first time that Children’s and Family Events were incorporated into the Parade schedule (all 1987); and the first Parade Costume Concours (1997). In addition, PCA National many years ago adopted our phrase “It’s Not Just the Cars, It’s the People” from Alan Bambina’s President’s column and Teri Davis’s Parade T-shirts. * And I predict that our 50th Anniversary tagline (thank you again, Fran!), “Driving Friendships for 50 Years” will also get adopted by National! So, “old timers”, what have I forgotten? You can contact me at bina42@tx.rr.com.

Development of the new, seventhgeneration 911 Carrera and Carrera S Coupes began with a new aluminumsteel body; the Cabriolets continue the evolution with the addition of an all-new, unique top that retains the characteristic 911 coupe roof line. The intelligent lightweight design makes use of magnesium for weight reduction, improved performance and lower fuel consumption. As with the new 911 coupe, Porsche has managed to make the new Cabriolet models up to 132 pounds lighter than their predecessors. By completely redesigning the convertible top for the new 911 Carrera models, Porsche engineers created a flexible roof comprised of a heated glass rear window with three integrated top elements. Comprised of magnesium bows covered in fabric, they make the convertible top very stable and particularly light. A water channel on the convertible top helps keep rainwater from 14

dropping into the entry when opening the doors. Actuated by a button on the center console or by the vehicle key the top and

opens or closes in approximately 13 seconds, at speeds over 30 mph. “The USA is and remains an important market for Porsche with good growth prospects,” said Bernhard Maier, Porsche AG Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing. “Detroit was deliberately chosen for the world premiere of the new 911 Cabrio because the USA is far and away our largest 911 Cabrio market.” The Coupé variant of the sports car classic will be available in the USA starting in February 2012 with the Cabriolet following a few months later, providing a fresh impetus. The two new Cabriolets feature the same engine as its Carrera Coupe counterpart. The rear of the 911 Carrera Cabrio houses a 3.4-liter flat six-cylinder engine generating

350 horsepower (hp) (257 kW) driving the rear wheels through a seven-gear manual transmission. The open-top Carrera S comes with a 3.8-liter flat sixcylinder engine developing 400 hp (294 kW) and also has a standard seven-gear manual transmission. The Cabriolets have the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) available as an option, helping to deliver even lower fuel consumption and shorter acceleration times. The new, 2012 911 Carrera Cabriolet will sprint to 60 mph in as little as 4.4 seconds with the optional PDK, accelerating on to its top-track-speed of 176 mph. The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet with PDK will perform the same deeds in as little as 4.1 seconds and reaches a top-track-speed of 185 mph. With a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase over the outgoing model, a wider front track and the new electro-mechanical power steering, the new Cabriolets offer even sportier driving characteristics, greater precision and agility. Depending on model, there are other standard and optional active control systems available to further

enhance the driving dynamics. The 911 Carrera Cabriolets will be available later in the spring of 2012. The new 2012 911 Carrera Cabriolet will have a base MSRP of $93,700, while the 2012 911 Carrera S Cabriolet base MSRP will be $103,800 (excluding destination). Panamera GTS The Panamera GTS is the purest expression of a sports sedan in the Porsche family with a clear focus on performance. The new Panamera GTS is based on the Panamera 4S and includes more power, upgraded brakes and a body lowered by ten millimeters with new sportier chassis tuning coupled to air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). These technical modifications make the Panamera model even more capable of cutting it on the race track without sacrificing practicality. The sportiest of all Panamera models also conveys this to occupants and the outside world by its striking sound. In terms of looks, the new Panamera GTS includes distinctive design features at the front, side and rear as well as black highlights. The interior is also tailored to its sporty personality with adaptive sports seats, SportDesign steering wheel with shift paddles and exclusive GTS leather interior with Alcantara surfaces.

The Panamera GTS powered by a modified 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, delivering 430 hp at 6,700 rpm, increasing the output over the Panamera S/4S by 30 hp. The maximum torque also increases by comparison, from 369 to 384 lb. ft. At the push of a button, thanks to the standard Sport Chro-

set at “Normal,” the GTS sits an aggressive ten millimeters lower than any other Panamera model. The distinctive sound of a Porsche engine is music to any enthusiasts’ ears, and the Panamera GTS adds a new dimension for appreciating the GTS exhaust notes at the push of a button. The Porsche

This collaboration enables the Panamera GTS to sprint to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, accelerating on to its top track speed of 178 mph. The GTS is equipped with the latest Porsche dynamic driving dynamic control systems, including adaptive air suspension including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This system constantly calibrates settings to suit specific driving challenges, from regulating leveling, height and spring rate to electronic damping. With the suspension

With the option of infusing the GTS cabin with the sound of a race car, it’s only fitting that interior appointments reinforce the car’s competitive DNA. The GTS comes with a full range of luxury and high-performance appointments, including a standard sport steering wheel with shift paddles and 18-way adjustable sport seats. The 2013 Panamera GTS base MSRP will be $109,900 (excluding destination) when it goes on sale later in 2012.

Diary of a Drivers’ Ed First-Timer

By Michael Mazurek Photos by Tracy Buck Editor’s note: Michael Mazurek is not a member of the Maverick Region or of PCA, but has been a fan of the Porsche 911 since childhood. For his birthday, Michael’s wife gave him a Drivers’ Ed weeekend at Motorsport Ranch, and even managed to borrow a Porsche from Jeff Wiggins, a Maverick DE instructor, for Michael to use for the event.

S

o Jeff throws me the keys and his only advice is, “When you spin, two feet in, otherwise you’ll f-up my transmission. Have fun.” It’s my 41st birthday. My wife manages to secure a 911 for me for the weekend. “I got you a driving course and a car to drive. Your truck is for sale and you’re about to go around a racetrack in a vehicle you’ve coveted since you were 12. I’m sure there will be cars for sale there. However, you are not to buy a Porsche.”

enjoying himself. His curmudgeonly demeanor is almost endearing. I get my helmet. “What size do you wear?” I don’t know--small? Turns out I take a medium. My head is bigger than I thought. It’s time for my first training class. I listen intently to the instructor. I stare at the track diagram on the wall. I look out the window, then back at the diagram. Class is over.

left, late apex and with the other, it’s a slow, very late apex, tight right-hander into a tricky chicane. I set up for the wrong corner almost every freaking lap. Damn it. Some corners are important, some are less important, knowing the line is important, following it exactly, well, that’s another story.

A green flag goes up--it’s our turn. I drive to the paddock and meet Shelly. She’s cool, petite and matterof-fact. I find out later that she drives “like a hairy chested man.” I can tell she knows her stuff. Her method is perfect. She walks me through every corner: brake, brake, brake, apex, track out, note the corner worker, looking through the cars, now out the window, thinking of the next corner.

By the end of the first day I think I have an idea of what the course looks like. I spend the evening in my hotel room drinking Corona and trying to draw the course from memory, attempting to meld what was out the windshield with what was hanging on the wall of the classroom: Big Bend; Horseshoe; Little Bend; Wagon Wheel; Rattlesnake. Do I down shift into second? Here? No, I keep it in third. I draw the line. I draw it again. I pass out before eight o’clock.

I keep confusing Wagon Wheel with Horseshoe. With one, the following corner is a straightforward

The track is liberating. It’s contemplative and intense. It is everything you’ve ever wanted

For the next couple of days before the event, I drive Jeff’s black 996 everywhere. My daughter asks “Daddy, are we taking the black car?” Yes, yes we are. I arrive in Cresson and glance around the treeless landscape. A red GT2, silver C4S, M3, Viper, Cayman, Panamera, another red GT2, and yet another GT2 rest in the morning mist. My borrowed Carrera looks a little ghetto in comparison with its matte black wheels and frog tape decals. No matter, I’m infatuated; hell I’m madly in love. A group is gathering around the donuts. I grab coffee and then some more coffee, no donuts-- I’m wired. Reluctantly I sit in a folding chair in a sparse room. A man with a handlebar mustache goes over some rules, something about flags, something about black flags. It’s obvious he’s 16

Here I come, ready or not!

to do in a car but couldn’t and it exposes every weakness as it asks “do you really know how to drive?” On day two I push hard. My new instructor, David, coaches me, “Man, you’re not afraid of the gas--now we need to teach you to brake. Brake harder. Harder. Put my head into the dash.” Our conversation is casual, like we’re chilling at Starbucks, as I go balls-out around the track. David’s technique is different than Shelly’s, but he’s equally passionate and encouraging. He likes to talk about the corner after I jack it up. I attempt to listen while I envision what I need to do for the next two corners. We work on modulating my acceleration. David counts, “five, six, seven...you have it floored, don’t you?” Yep. It’s an odd sensation flooring it and keeping the pedal mashed until the very last moment when you absolutely have to lift. How deep can I take it? The ABS kicks in a bit. I’m a little hot on entry into Big Bend. I notice, I sense more, I’m thinking less, and the next series of corners, when executed correctly, really feel incredible. I set the wheel on the first and hold it through the next two, dive into the third, straight line,

“Right there! Turn where he just turned!” brake, hold right, accelerate, apex left, always too early, parallel with the straight and on the gas hard. I almost hit the rev limiter over a blind crest as David says to me, “We’ll put you in the blue group for the next run, give you some room.” This freaks me out. I lose my focus for a millisecond and end up off line

and out in a field of spent rubber. It’s my last run for the weekend and having graduated to blue, I’m getting my ass handed to me. Sure, there’s nobody slowing me down, because the entire group has lapped me and now sits on my rear bumper. They pass and I try to hold on. Damn that’s a fast exit. For a few seconds I’m hanging with a neon green RS. He pulls away. Another older, Mad Maxlooking 911 passes. The wing is way too big. Again I follow his line. Another weekend of this and I might be able to hang for half a lap. It feels good.

I’m a little hot on entry into Big Bend. February 17

THANK YOU, everyone for your generous donations for the Hope Shelter Party. YOU give ALL year with your generous hearts…the gift cards, Founder’s Day Silent Auction, and the D.E. parade laps. The Keesecker Family and Friends performed a fun “Chicken Dance” and many other exciting German folk dances. Rich’s

daughter, Annika, raised money by doing chores and she AGAIN gave gift cards totaling $600.00 for the women to go shopping. Thank you, Jean Frick for getting the crowd in the spirit with some favorite Christmas carols. Thank you, Bob and Clara Lewis, Dave Frick, and Linda Bambina for helping share the spirit of the season with our guests.

Merry Christmas, Karen.

The students from Chisholm Trail Intermediate School from the Keller I.S.D. in Fort Worth gave generous gifts of toothpaste, toothbrushes, toys, and more.

Lisa Huffaker goes over her list. . . 18

One joyous partygoer, Karen, said it best: “Thank you so much for everything you have done for me. You have touched my heart and I will always remember you!”

Can you say “Frohe Weihnachten”?

PuShing The PeRFoRMAnce enveLoPe.

I’ve bought a lot of cars over the years, but this is the best experience by far – so much so that I drive out of my way to come to Park Place Porsche. It all started with the sales person, and now I’m on a first-name basis with Jason, from parts, and Kevin, my service advisor. Both check in on me all the time, making it feel like a family experience. They’re as excited as you are when you get your car. This is my third Porsche and my baby. The 997 Turbo is a tremendous car, but I wanted to find some way to make it unique. I started with the wheels. That made a great look for the car and changed its entire personality. That’s when I first met Jason. We spent a lot of time talking about the engine and potential modifications for it; three weeks later, I was back for the performance upgrades we had discussed. My favorite engine upgrade was also the first one we did: the exhaust. The flow is a lot cleaner, a lot faster, and it sounds great without taking away from the Porsche engine sound. We also changed the headers and added four other upgrades that improved the performance, bringing it from 480 hp to well over 600 hp. I wanted top-quality, so we used genuine Porsche parts for everything. It alleviates any concern, because the warranty is the same as all Porsche parts on the car. And when it is in for service, Kevin always takes great care of me — making a fun car even more fun to own. These guys invested time and effort with me, so I want to reciprocate and give them all the business I can. The people really make all the difference and are why I recommend Park Place Porsche.

Cliff ’s Ramblings By Cliff Blackshear

S

o the 2012 911 is on the way. We Porsche technicians started studying the car a couple months ago. Porsche released a “2012 911 Introduction” training cell for us some time back. For our dealer to be certified with PCNA and PAG we were required to view the web training and then to take a test afterwards. Their presentations to us at the technical level are very much packed with information concerning new engineering ideas and benefits derived through testing. The goal of engineering changes, how changes are implemented, and the performance results are what we are presented with for study. Porsche engineers are in love with saving weight, managing air more efficiently, and making more power with fewer moving parts, while quietly exceeding any emission or safety mandates the EU or USA may require. This car looks pretty cool. I remember the first 996 GT3 I drove and was just astounded. Then the 997 GT3 came along. Unbelievable. Cannot wait for the next gen GT3. We lost our resident Flying Lizard

a while back - he went racing full time. While he waits to get with Lizards to prep their new RSRs, he is working for Magnus Racing and helping with their Daytona 24 Hour effort. He tells me tonight that there are 15 cars within 1 second of each other during night practice. There are 40 cars in GT class. Wow! The Lizards have taken delivery of their new factory prep cars and

slightly better. This indicates to me that either Porsche is getting ready to bail from the series or working hot and heavy for 2013 with a 991 RSR. I hope the latter possibility is what is coming. The Flying Lizard team is a very well orchestrated group. Everyone likes everyone, they know what they are doing, have factory backing, and funding is not an issue. Does

Currently only the engineers for the team are working on the new rides. Lizard will be heading to Sonoma soon. He sent me pics of the new cars and we talked briefly about them. They are fat! Huge fender flares and other changes yet to be divulged. The cars are pretty much last year’s offering with upgrades as near as I can surmise. This set me to thinking. Last year did not go well. They only were somewhat competitive. This year’s car, in my mind will only be

not get much better than that. It is interesting. Build the 2012 911 for civilian driving and then develop a racecar from it. If Porsche is doing that, it is gonna be entertaining to say the least in 2013. You know Ferrari, Corvette and BMW are bringing their A game every year. What a great venue the ALMS series is. I pay no attention to the P1, P2 stuff. It is boring. Yet the GT class is epic with manufacturers going at each other. Makes NASCAR look pretty anemic. Life is good!

Advertiser of the Month: Mayo Performance Interview by Linda Bambina

L

ongtime active PCA and Maverick Region member (40-plus years), Ed Mayo was originally in partnership with Al Zim in the early 70s. He went into business for himself as Mayo Performance in Euless, and in 1984, he moved to his current location. Consistency is definitely a characteristic of Ed. In addition to contributing to or co-sponsoring hundreds of events over the years, his shop has been the site of the infamous May at Mayo’s since Fran Ussery invented the event in 1998 as a way of getting their money’s worth out of all the rented chairs and tables left over from the annual Ussery Printing party! Little did we know it would become one of the region’s larger social gatherings each year. Tom Petrushka began working for Ed in 1986. Recently Tom became an official partner and has graciously agreed to sponsor a very special 50th Anniversary Edition of our May event: Cinco de Mayo at Mayo’s! (More to come on that in a later issue.) While some employees have come and gone, Ed, Tom, and Vernon (now retired) have provided the skills and consistent expertise to keep their customers’ cars running as they were meant to. Not only do their

customers keep coming back, but so do their old employees! After a long hiatus with Ferraris, Mike Kuhn has rejoined the shop to handle the front desk duties. Mayo Performance has specialized in all years and models of Porsche exclusively for more than thirty years. While Ed has a passion and an almost eerie talent with the 356 and early 911 motors, Tom stressed how Ed’s historical perspective has taught him and the team how to look at the new water-cooled 911 motors and consider their basic layout when diagnosing and repairing them well after their warranties have expired. Tuning and diagnostics are very strong areas of expertise for this shop. (They call it “Meticulous Maintenance” and it is very well known and respected.) Mayo Performance also specializes in preparing cars for track or autocross. Ed has 30-plus years of driving trophies to show for this passion and talent, too. As the cars (and Ed) have gotten older, major restorations of classic 911s have become a newer part of the business. It takes an old guy to restore an old car. “I don’t think we have customers; I think we have Porsche friends” - Ed Mayo
