Š2016 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times.

The everyday act of blowing your mind. The Cayman never ceases to amaze, time and time again. Its power is derived from a 2.7-liter flat-six engine with direct fuel injection. Combined with PDK, it produces a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds and a top track speed of 164mph. It's as surprising the thousandth time as it was the first. A visceral, sporty driving experience that you can expect across all models. Which is why for Porsche owners, there is no substitute.

The Cayman. Forever amazing.

Shifting Gears:

Volunteers are our Lifeblood!

By Jim Falgout, Region President

As I write this, we are getting ready for one of your club’s best annual events: the All Member Party, an annual event in which new members can meet and talk with more seasoned members to find out what the club is all about. Not only do you get to see a wide array of Porsches, you get to meet their owners, who appreciate the marque just like you do. But, you also get to learn about all the different events your club has for your enjoyment. The Not only do chairpersons of the various committees will be available you get to see to give insight into their a wide array events that they organize and of Porsches operate. We all need to enjoy our Porsches, and the best way to do that is to share the experience with other Porsche owners at our events. Participation sometimes requires a small amount of effort, but it can be so rewarding. What is even more rewarding is volunteering to assist with one of your club’s events. For those of you who would like to help but are not sure where you could make your best contribution, we now have a chairperson for volunteers: Jim Gallegos. He is gathering requirements from the various chairpersons and will be happy to direct you to the committee that could use your talents. You can reach Jim at volunteers@mavpca.org. We have had others volunteer recently, but we are always looking for new enthusiasts! Jim is a new volunteer, as is his wife, Phyllis. Phyllis will be assisting Tracy Robertson with social events. I have challenged all committee chairpersons to find an assistant, like Phyllis, so there is less of a 2 February

So, when I ask for a volunteer it is usually to be an assistant. We do have a recent opening for someone to be the liaison with the companies who advertise in Slipstream. If that is something you feel able to do, please contact Jim Gallegos. As I always say, YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! Volunteer; you will be glad you did.

Mav of the Month

Speaking of volunteers, several years ago, in another life, I was president of a civic group. We had several “past presidents” who regularly attended meetings but would not do anything to help the organization function. They felt like they had paid their dues. This is not the case in the Maverick Region. One of our past presidents has been a big help to me and your club behind the scenes. He assists with the e-mail addresses, the web page and has given me much insight into how and why some things happen. He is also a past Zone Five Representative. James Shoffit, thanks for all the assistance you keep giving to your club.

2016 Maverick Region Board - Officers and Chairs

President Jim Falgout president@mavpca.org

Jim joined Maverick Region in August, 2008. He drives a 2003 996, which is the third Porsche he has owned. Jim enjoys attending Maverick Region social and driving events.

Vice President David Robertson C 617-797-0516 vp@mavpca.org

David fell in love with the Porsche 911 when, as a child, he would have his parents stop by the old Forrest Lane Porsche in Dallas so he could dream of someday owning one. He bought his first Porsche 911 in 2011. He and his wife Tracy enjoy being active members in the Maverick Region.

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821 secretary@mavpca.org

Wendy and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now 18. They own 3 Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2016 Cayman GT4.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 treasurer@mavpca.org

Richard joined Maverick Region in 2012 when he fulfilled a 30+ year dream to own his first (of many) 911, a 2009 Silver Carrera! Although fairly new to the club, he is excited about being more involved and meeting more Porsche fanatics!

Gimme a Minute:

January Board Meeting

By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

President Jim Falgout

started the meeting a few minutes early. He was contacted regarding the All British & European Car Day, who invited the Porsche Club to their event on May 1 at White Rock Lake Park. More details later. He reported for the missing Tracy Robertson, who was happy to announce that Phyllis Gallegos will be her Social Event Co-Chair. Their first event together is the All Member Party (AMP) on January 23. Drivers’ Education Chair Chris Tabor has good events dates set up for 2016, with two in the spring and three in the fall, including the solo-only DE in conjunction with the Club Race. He wants to market the social aspects of the DE events, as well as the driving. He will work to promote events in Slipstream and encourage photography and articles, and will provide discount codes for people who attend the AMP. VP David Robertson is working with past VP Gareth Maurice to learn the ropes for insurance needs. He will be talking to Zone 5 Rep Lynn Friedman about insurance needs for Equipe Rapide autocross events. Editor Jim Hirsch reported that Slipstream was on time, even with the early deadline due to the holidays. He remarked that with about 300 new members joining every year, it would be good for all chairs to routinely give brief information about their events in Slipstream. He will continue the 40-page format, as he has received great article support. He will be selling calendars and directories at the AMP. Rally Chair Don Sebert is planning a spring rally. He is looking for dates and ideas for a gimmick rally. Email him with suggestions. Monthly Dinner Social Chair Stephanie Ho said there is no event 6 February

in January to draw attendance away from the AMP. The February event will be at Lavendou, but will be limited to the first 30 couples to RSVP. It will be a special party in honor of Valentine’s Day. March will bring us back to Love & War in Texas. She is looking in Addison for a location for April. Treasurer Rich Solomon reported that we are financially healthy. We had a net gain last year of ~$25K. He will be sending out financial reports to all event chairs with their specifics. He will publish a financial report in Slipstream soon. Founders Day received over $9300 in donations for the Hope Shelter (likely the most ever) and about $12K for the year. He had to modify (with presidential approval) how the Hope donations were handled for the end of the year. Charity Chair Chris Hamilton needed money for gift cards for the party and the rest was sent as a check. He also sent approved donations to the Boot Campaign. He will finalize the charity committee by next month. He reminded all to use the forms on our website for check requests and money receipts. Concours Chair Andy Kay is getting the May at Mayo’s event set, as well as information for Autos in the Park in June. He is working with the Lone Star Region Concours Chair, Thomas Roy, on ideas. Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr thanked Jim Hirsch for his Slipstream promotion and James Shoffit for his work on the autocross web page. Approximately 30 Porsches participated in the ER program last year. He wants to encourage more to come out, focusing on the fun. Their events are low key and really enjoyable. Social Co-Chair Phyllis Gallegos has already been working with Tracy Robertson on the AMP. She will

January 6, 2016 make sure all requests get taken care of for tables, power, etc. Volunteer Chair Jim Gallegos believes it will be easy to get volunteers because PCA people are very nice! He wants to encourage more to help and will work with event chairs for their needs. He wants all major areas to have lots of support. Perennial volunteer James Shoffit reported that he has been working as part of the web team to update our website. He noted that many pages still need to be done, and it’s up to the event chairs to look at their pages and make necessary change requests. He will work to catch up the history page. DE/CR Registrar Wendy Shoffit noted that registration for the first DE of the year will open Jan 27. Porsche Parade hotel registration has opened and the “regular” event registration will take place in early April. Absentee Past President John Hamilton reported that our membership is at another all-time high with 1642 primary members and 900 associates for a total of 2542. This is a net gain of 18 over last month. Lastly, Jim Falgout presented James Shoffit with the Maverick of the Month award for his recent work on the website, PayPal issues, and continued website, email, and Facebook support. Meeting was adjourned.

It’s still cold outside which means frosty mornings for your Porsche

High Performance Drivers’ Education:

How

Maverick Region Puts on an HPDE By Carey Spreen and Chris Tabor, Region DE Chair

Unless you are a brand new member to PCA and Maverick Region, you have probably heard the term “DE” in the course of conversation, our website, pages of Porsche Panorama, or perhaps in this very magazine. If so, you know that it stands for Drivers’ Education, also called High Performance Drivers’ Education (HPDE). Porsches have gotten so fast lately that there are almost no opportunities to take advantage of all that performance on public roads, so we offer this alternative: fulfill your need for speed safely, on a racetrack, with expert advice from an experienced coach sitting right next to you. The goal of Maverick Region’s DE program is to teach enthusiastic drivers the proper techniques for driving at racing speeds on a racetrack using one-onone in-car instruction. Our instructors, which we call coaches (since that’s more along the lines of what they actually do) are passionate about helping you get the most out of your Porsche in a safe environment. Safe, you say? On a real racetrack? Isn’t that a contradiction? Absolutely not! Our DEs consist of the following features to make sure that you have fun safely:

• First and foremost: DEs are NOT races. There are no timed laps and no trophies. Passing is only allowed on certain designated straightaways, to keep you and your car safe. The five run groups are organized by driver experience, not top speed or horsepower. • Pre-event safety inspections are required. Take your Porsche to an approved inspection site and they will check out your car to make sure it is safe for you and the other participants to take on the track, all at no charge! All questions will be happily answered as well. • Drivers’ meetings covering track safety occur at the beginning of each day. First-timers and novices are fully briefed about what to expect on the track. • Classroom instruction from our coaches provides you the proper line around the track, the proper procedures and locations to pass other drivers (and to let them pass you!), the meaning of all those flags (hint: there are more flags than just the green and the checker), and much more. • Four on-track sessions per day provide a total of 3-1/2 hours of track time over a two-day event weekend, although you can opt for a single day at a reduced price.

• Professional corner workers are on course whenever cars are at speed – they are there to keep you safe. • Lunch breaks consist of catered meals each day, with free cold bottled water available throughout the day to keep you hydrated. Our main goals are to be safe and have fun. And don’t be surprised if, at the end of your first DE, you are already looking forward to the next one! The novice run group fills up quickly once registration opens, so check out this year’s schedule and make plans to get to know your Porsche at speed!

Driving Competitively on a Budget: By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

The Maverick Autocross program

is a low-risk way to get started in competition driving in almost any car. Our region puts on events combined with the Equipe Rapid Sports Car Club (autocross.com) at sites like Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie and Mineral Wells Airpark, about 40 miles west of Fort Worth. It is an excellent way to learn car control skills that will come in handy every time you drive. You will quickly learn about proper seating position, looking ahead, threshold braking, and precise car control while you try to execute a perfect lap on a pylon-marked course, where you will be timed to the thousandth of a second. Unless you do something very unusual, the only risk to your car is a rubber cone contact that can be easily cleaned off. Many have used autocross as a stepping-stone to Drivers’ Education or Club Racing. Some very fast and well-known road racers got their start in autocross. Some drivers still autocross after moving up to those higher risk activities or move on to National caliber Porsche Parade or SCCA competition. Most Porsches can navigate the whole course after just one shift to second gear. The next 60 to 80 seconds are such a rush that some drivers barely take time to

breathe. You do this six to eight times after just walking the unique course found at each event. The rest of the day you will meet lots of interesting people, take a turn running part of the event from registration, tech, or corner station duty, and enjoy an exciting assortment of interesting cars at speed. Although there are many classes at these combined events, Porsche Club entrants run in the so-called “small region” classes (as defined in the Parade Competition Rules, or PCRs). For 2016 these include three fully showroom stock classes for completely stock Porsches. There are also classes for upgraded and more heavily modified Porsches, of course. All events, except the Novice School, are on Sundays. Registration is available online or onsite. Arrive about 8 am and bring a lunch or snacks with you, as there is usually no official lunch break. After tech inspection, walk the course yourself, or do so with the formal novice walk-through for some additional insights. Cars start running about 10am and awards are presented about 4pm. See the online calendar at mav.pca. org for this year’s dates. Hope to see you there!

Getting Published in Slipstream

By Brenda Dranow, Region Content Wrangler

Did you realize that

Slipstream is now in its 54th year of publication? For members new to the Maverick Region, that might be a bit surprising. Further, you can actually read previous issues of Slipstream begining with January, 2002 by visiting the Maverick web site and selecting the Newsletter tab.

Screenshot courtesy of the Author

Having a club newsletter with such a long and rich history does not happen by accident. One constant, throughout all of those years of publication, is providing stories and photos that feature our members and the wide array of activities they particpate in courtesy of the club. I hope you enjoy each issue that arrives in your mailbox each month and that you spend time reading the articles that your fellow members submit which describe a variety of adventures they experience courtesy of their Porsche ownership and membership in our club. We are always looking for fresh content to share with our readers and invite you to spend some time considering what you would like to see included in a future issue of Slipstream with your name attached

as the author and even the photographer. We agree that pictures are often worth a thousand words! Here some guidelines to keep in mind as you begin your article: • A rule of thumb is about 700 words per printed page, without photos. • Photos enhance your article and should be submitted in the highest resolution possible to ensure good quality printing. • Write about what you find interesting as it’s likely to be interesting to many of your fellow members, as well. We look forward to receiving your ideas for articles in upcoming issues. You can find suggestions on topics to consider in the ad below. Send your ideas to me at pr@mavpca.org or our Slipstream editor, Jim Hirsch, at editor@mavpca.org.

Sunday Drive How-To: By Tom Martin, Sunday Drive Chair

Using Your Garmin GPS for PCA Tours

In May 2000, at the direction of

President Bill Clinton, the U.S government discontinued its use of “Selective Availability” in order to make the Global Positioning System (GPS) more responsive to civil and commercial users worldwide. This directive effectively opened up a “whole new world” of accurate navigation technology to the general public. Rudimentary, expensive GPS receivers (GPSr) were introduced, embraced mostly by hobbyists. As technology burgeoned, more practical uses were exploited by industry, such as aviation, boating, and most certainly, the automotive sector. That was over 15 years ago. Nowadays, a GPS “nav” unit is almost standard equipment in modern cars. Smartphones utilize it. Watches, dog collars, even underwear can be purchased with GPS technology incorporated to track the location of the bearer. Big Brother lives, and we are him. Drive leaders in the Maverick Sunday Drive program use Garmin GPS receivers, with Drive routes loaded, to guide them along a pre-planned route. The program utilizes the Garmin BaseCamp software to plot its Drives. Three days before a Sunday Drive, a mass e-mail is sent to all drivers who have submitted an RSVP for the event. The e-mail contains three files: 1. Garmin .gdb file of the route 2. Route Overview 3. Turn-by-Turn Instructions The Garmin .gdb file is a proprietary file which, when loaded into a Garmin GPSr, will guide the user on a specific route, regardless of the criteria of shortest distance or fastest time. In other words, you will get from Point A to Point B in the manner determined by the author of the file -- perfect for Sunday Drives. So let’s load one up and take ‘er for a test run, shall we? Instructions are for the Garmin 2557, but should apply to all new, and some old, Garmin models. First, save the .gdb file from the PCA Tours e-mail to your computer, preferably to “Desktop”. Then you’ll need to install the “BaseCamp” program on your PC or Mac, which is available for free at the Garmin website. Go to: http://www.garmin.com/enUS/shop/downloads/basecamp to download the BaseCamp software. Once installed, launch the program. Next, connect your Garmin unit to your computer with the USB cable that came with your GPSr. After powering up, BaseCamp will recognize the unit.

It is important to note that the default waypoint is the second waypoint of the route. The first waypoint is the start point of a Sunday Drive. So if you are already at the starting point of a Drive, you would simply press “Start”. If you are starting from anywhere else, such as your home, you would select the first waypoint before pressing “Start”. Now follow the purple road and do exactly what the voice tells you to do. friendly. BaseCamp Training Videos are available for viewing at http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/ training/basecamp/. If you find these instructions inadequate, independent study is highly recommended. There are several excellent tutorials posted on YouTube that may prove more useful than the Garmin library. And if you develop an interesting drive that you would like to see incorporated into the Sunday Drive program, by all means feel free to forward it to me at: tours@mavpca.org. Hope to see you and your Garmin on a future “Sunday Drive”!

If so desired, you can create your own personal route in BaseCamp for yourself, or to share with others. Be advised that the program is not really intuitive or user-

Volunteers:

The Lifeblood of the Maverick Region

By Jim Gallegos, Region Volunteer Chair

The Maverick Region

prides itself on the many and varied opportunities we provide for member participation each month. Like all non-profit groups, we can only provide those activities if we have member volunteers who share their interest and experience with other members by volunteering to help in one of the myriad ways necessary to ensure success. So, I decided to follow that idea by offering to serve in a newly created Maverick Region role - that of Volunteer Chair. First, a bit of background of my history of volunteerism. My lifetime of volunteering experiences started with my Dad - he did everything for everyone. I have a 30-year volunteer association with United Way in three

different states: Colorado, Arizona, and Texas. I published an article in the Dallas Business Journal in 2007 on“The importance of Pre-K education” as a United Way volunteer. As the United Way Advocacy Chair, I spoke to Texas state legislature members on behalf of the United Way in Austin. I served as the P and Z chair, on the Arts & Culture Board, and I-35 Corridor Board in Lewisville for 8 years. I currently serve on the Garland Community Multi Culture committee as appointed by Mayor Athas. On the Porsche side, I fell in love with a 1974 Porsche at a car show and purchased my first 1999 911 two years ago. My wife Phyllis and I are able to attend many Maverick club events

together and have met some great people. Most recently, I’ve helped organize the last two Porsche Cars and Coffee with 46 attendees in Garland with a visit from Mayor Athas and 76 beautiful Porsches in Addison. Just call me the cone man! I look forward to identifying and fulfilling Volunteer needs for Maverick Region event chairs (see page 4) and continuing to share the Porsche experience with as many members as possible!

Hope Shelter Christmas Party: By Chris Hamilton, Region Charity Chair

Much happiness was

found at the Hope Shelter Christmas Party in December. Rich Keesecker, a fellow Mav, and his family and friends performed their magic for the room by getting the crowd up and dancing to their traditional Bavarian music and the infamous Chicken Dance. This was the seventh straight year that they have entertained the children and their moms. They had dancers from their group ranging from four years old to a very young 74.

The club bought $100 gift cards for eleven moms and $50 gift cards for eight employees of the shelter. The children each received gifts from the club. Chris Hamilton had a lot of fun shopping for twenty children. They let us know a WANT and a NEED to make their holiday

The Man Who Thinks He Can: Courtesy of Porsche News, Porsche AG

Porsche is bringing poetry to the

racetrack and has posted to YouTube and shared on social media a dramatic video starring actor and auto racer Patrick Dempsey describing Porsche motorsports. The video contains a reading of “Thinking,” sometimes he referred to as “The Man Who Thinks He Can,” a poem written in the early 20th century by Walter D. Wintle, of whom little else is known. The poem is motivational, beginning “If you think you are beaten, you are” and ending, “sooner or later the man who wins/is the man who thinks he can.” Here is the poem for your reading enjoyment:

Porsche In Poetry

If you think you’re outclassed, you are; You’ve got to think high to rise. You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win the prize. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man; But sooner or later the man who wins Is the one who thinks he can! Published in 1905 by Unity Tract Society, Unity School of Christianity. Called “Thinking”, by Walter D. Wintle.

If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don’t. If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t, It is almost a cinch that you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost; For out of the world we find Success begins with a fellow’s will It’s all in the state of mind.

morning in the Santa Monica Mountains over Los Angeles. As I had only arrived into town the night before and it was early, I was not yet able to retrieve the GT4. Rather than simply linger at the coffee house, it seemed only wise to take this opportunity to put the rental car, a 2015 Toyota Corolla LE, through its paces over part of Mulholland Drive. The Porsche Code:

How to Crack It

Courtesy of Porsche News, Porsche AG

Every Porsche model has an official

name and an in-house type number. Sometimes the two are identical, sometimes not – how can the system be understood? You have to go back to the year 1931 to understand the beginnings of the in-house numbering method. Every order, every project of the newly founded engineering design office Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH of Ferdinand Porsche was given a consecutive number, the in-house type number. In the beginning it was the number 7: the design of a saloon car for the German car manufacturer Wanderer. Number 22 became the legendary Auto Union Grand Prix racing car and the Type 60 was the Volkswagen. The numbers therefore rose with each new order, with each engine designed, with each drawing for an axle, a gearbox or a tractor. On 8 June 1948, by which time the project numbers had climbed to 356, a novelty came about: for the first time an automobile was made under the official brand name of Porsche. The Porsche 356. In 1988, a major break occurred in the 911 history with the introduction of the completely redesigned 964 model series. The 993 followed in 1993. Then the 996, 997 and, in the current model, we return to the 991. Between the internal numbers of the 911, there are still further models to be found, with examples being the Carrera GT (internal 980), the Boxster (986 first generation, 987 second, 981 third) and the Cayenne (955). The tradition of the three-digit type numbers is being maintained – albeit with a certain degree of creative freedom. So, the current model line includes: Boxster (Cayman is the coupe model) An artificial name used since 1993 and derived from Boxer (engine) and roadster Carrera (e.g. 911 Carrera) Originally, “Carrera” was the name of the Type 547 four-camshaft engine designed by Dr Ernst Fuhrmann. Porsche later used this suffix for the most powerful engine versions, such as the 356 A 1500 GS Carrera or the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. However, Carrera has almost become established as a synonym for the 911 model series. The name comes from the Carrera Panamericana, a Mexican endurance race in which Porsche secured major successes with the 550 Spyder. E-Hybrid (e.g. Cayenne S E-Hybrid) Apart from the combustion engine, the E-Hybrid models also have an electric motor on board, which provides more thrust while simultaneously emitting less CO2.

Executive (e.g. Panamera 4S Executive) The Executive models of the Panamera have a body extended by 15 cm, which primarily benefits the passengers sitting in the rear. GTS (e.g. Cayman GTS) GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport and is originally a homologation class from motor racing. The 904 Carrera GTS received this epithet for the first time in 1963. In 1991, the 928 GTS revived the tradition. The GTS suffix is currently used to designate the especially sporty and exclusive models of a Porsche model series. RS (e.g. 911 Carrera RS 2.7, model year 1972) The RS (stands for RennSport[=racing sport]) and is a street-legal model that has been derived from the motor racing version. The designation is, however, also used for particularly sporty models, e.g. the 911 RS America. RSR (e.g. 911 Carrera RSR 2.8 model year 1973) The RennSport Rennwagen (RSR) [literally: racing sport racing car] is a purely competition version and is not street legal. S (e.g. 928 S, model year 1979; Macan S) S for “Super” or “Sport”: a version with a more powerful engine. Today the S consistently stands for “Sport” and, in addition to the extra-sporty engine, additionally includes enhancements to the equipment compared with the basic model. Spyder (918 Spyder) The designation originally comes from the coachmaking term for lightweight, open carriages for two people. In a similar way to the term Roadster, Spyder at Porsche designates open mid-engine sports cars. The 918 already has a legendary predecessor in the 550 Spyder from 1953. Targa (e.g. 911 Targa 4) The 911 Targa is an open version of the 911, characterised by its distinctive roll-over protection bar and its fixed roof section. The name comes from the legendary Sicilian road race Targa Florio and means “plate” in English. Turbo (e.g. Cayenne Turbo) These models have an engine with exhaust gas turbocharger, which produces a powerful boost in performance. Almost all Porsche models have had an exhaust gas turbocharger since 2015. 4 (e.g. 911 Carrera 4) Models with all-wheel drive So, stay tuned, as we all know the 2016 model change is bringing a new number to the list with the introduction of the 718 Boxster/Cayman line. 31

Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

The Maverick Region of the Porsche

Club of America exists for the benefit of you, the club’s members. In fact, the club bylaws include this statement as a primary objective: “The enjoyment and sharing of good will and fellowship engendered by owning a Porsche and engaging in such social or other events as may be agreeable to the membership.” In short, that means offering a wide variety of activities in which our members can exercise their Porsche(s) while enjoying the company and conversation of enthusiasts. I think all of your club board members would be interested in hearing from you as to how you think that objective is being met. You can find those email addresses on page 4 if you feel like sharing your thoughts. In the meantime, from a start in 1962 with 15 Founding Members, your Maverick Region club has grown to include 1,616 primary members with 908 affiliate members as of December, 2015. Here is an interesting statistic: although the raw numbers show that the club gained a total of 129 primary members during 2015, we actually had a total of 347 primary members new to our region join and/or transfer in. The difference of course, is due to those 218 members who chose not to renew their membership during the year. What does that mean for our club? It means that each year we have a significant number of people new to either Porsche ownership and/or our region. That means all of our existing membership has to take an active interest in engaging these new members. In other words, club activities that seem to be repetitive to long time members will hold a “newness” for quite a large number of new members. Let’s make sure we go out of way to welcome these new members with open arms - the math tells us we have over 20% membership turnover in 2015 alone! that sound interesting to them. Event chairs make certain we have upcoming events highlighted with ads throughout the newsletter and provide articles recapping event activities. These are all official, fully sponsored Maverick Region and PCA events. In addition, the calendar on the Maverick web site (mav.pca.org) lists all of these club supported events. There will be times, however, when new members want to find other ways to get together with their fellow Maverick members. This may be for an impromptu drive on a beautiful day, some help with Porsche maintenance, or even simply getting together for coffee and bench racing and meeting other members. The best way for new (and existing) members to find out about these impromptu gatherings is to join our Maverick Facebook group at https://www.facebook. com/groups/mavpca/ and/or follow our Maverick Twitter feed at https://twitter.com/MaverickPCA. There you will find all sorts of conversations occurring with lots of opportunities to get together in casual settings. For example, David Cavazos takes it upon himself to reserve spaces for our Porsche group at the monthly Dallas Cars & Coffee held at Classic BMW in Plano the first Saturday of each month. In a similar fashion, Tony Lisotta and Jim Gallegos coordinate a Porsche specific Cars & Coffee just for our members each month. In addition, take a look through our advertisers’ information in each issue and follow them on Facebook or through their web pages and you may find opportunities for gatherings that they sponsor for their Porsche customers. I hope you’re keeping this one New Year’s resolution for 2016: “Participate in at least one more Maverick and/or PCA event than you did in 2015.” And, now add to that, “Welcome a new Maverick member personally.”
