Fastest way to the longest route. YouÂ’ll be tempted to ignore what the GPS has to offer. Sprockets:

Coming this Spring

By David Robertson, Region President

I

n North Texas, February is always a hard month to call as far as weather goes. One day I could be sitting by my pool writing Sprockets in 75-degree sunny weather as I am now, and tomorrow there could be six inches of snow and ice on the ground. I for one am always ready to go out for a drive in my 911 this time of the year whenever there is a good day for it. If you need a good excuse to get out, we always have a couple of lunches during the month where we meet up, and at least one happy hour/dinner. If you follow the various social media outlets that we use, you will see from time to time impromptu gatherings for coffee, lunch, drinks, or cigars -- pretty much anything that gives us a good excuse to get together on a nice day. Many of these impromptu or even semi-planned gatherings are not Maverick PCA sanctioned events, but we just enjoy getting together for just about any reason! Registration is open for the Spring Treffen in The Hill Country. These new Treffens are national multiday PCA events (replacing the previous PCA Escapes) with driving tours as well as fun non-driving events such as winery and brewery visits, a tour of some of the food trucks that Austin is so famous for, and other great options. The Hill Country Treffen will be held March 29 through April 2 at the Lost Pines Resort east of Austin. The fall Treffen will be in Asheville, NC. Coming the last weekend of February is our first big driving event which is a Drivers’ Education out at MotorSport Ranch. There is also the Carrera of the Americas PCA Club Race and Advanced DE sponsored by the Maverick, Hill Country, and Lone Star Regions at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, March 3-5. This takes the place of the previous TWS race. You may notice that the Carrera of the Americas event has been moved so it doesn’t conflict with Mother’s Day anymore! I have been asked a couple of times how I came up with the name Sprockets for my column. It certainly stands to reason that sprockets come to mind when we are discussing any of the Porsche automobiles. In the past, you could see them right there on the engine performing various tasks. Now when I look behind the rear deck lid of a newer 911 there doesn’t even seem to be an engine to look at. But, as I reminisce about the olden days when Porsches had engines that were visible to the naked eye, I also reflect on the old Saturday Night Live skit named Sprockets that was a spoof on German seriousness, efficiency, and precision, and always included a certain monkey. If you are not familiar with this particular skit then you need to look it up because I cannot explain it to you. 2 February

SAUL FRAIRE, Chef-Proprietor 1235 William D. Tate Ave Grapevine, TX 76051 817-329-6995 As always, we are looking for volunteers and I am certain we can find a place for you. Please contact our Volunteer coordinator Jimmy Gallegos at volunteers@ mavpca.org. I look forward to seeing all of you at one of our great events this month! MAV OF THE MONTH: Chris Flaugh Chris is one of our relatively recent Maverick members who almost immediately looked for a way to get more involved and contribute to our club activities. As it turned out, we needed someone to chair our Goodie Store effort and Chris took on that challenge without hesitation. When you order your Maverick name tag, that’s Chris who gets the process going and sees that your name tag arrives quickly. In addition, he has helped move our club store into its use of our new Maverick logo and works with PCA on the items available to order. His most recent Porsche is a 30-year old extremely original red 924S, and he also has a 31-year-old Alfa Romeo to keep him busy. Congratulations Chris!

2017 Maverick Region Board - Officers and Chairs

President David Robertson C 617-797-0516 president@mavpca.org

David fell in love with the Porsche 911 when, as a child, he would have his parents stop by the old Forest Lane Porsche in Dallas so he could dream of someday owning one. He bought his first Porsche 911 in 2011. He and his wife Tracy enjoy being active members in the Maverick Region.

Vice President Jim Falgout vp@mavpca.org

Jim joined Maverick Region in August, 2008. He drives a 2003 996, which is the third Porsche he has owned. Jim enjoys attending Maverick Region social and driving events.

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821 secretary@mavpca.org

Wendy and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now in college. They own three Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2016 Cayman GT4.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 treasurer@mavpca.org

Richard joined Maverick Region in 2012 when he fulfilled a 30+ year dream to own his first (of many) 911, a 2009 Silver Carrera! Although fairly new to the club, he is excited about being more involved and meeting more Porsche fanatics!

Gimme a Minute:

January Board Meeting

By Wendy Shoffit, Region Secretary

T

he meeting began at 7:01 pm with new President David Robertson explaining he would continue the “around the room” board meeting format. The Zone 5 meeting will be held this year Feb. 17-18 in Grapevine and invited the board members. It’s a great opportunity to get to know the region presidents. He mentioned the upcoming joint DEs at COTA with the BMW Club in May and November. Registration is now open for the Treffen Hill Country, taking place 3/29 - 4/2. Also coming up is our All Member Party (AMP) January 28. He would also like to revive our tech sessions, although we don’t currently have an event chair. He is taking suggestions. Andy Kay will do a detailing one. Several mentioned ideas to enhance the program. Treasurer Richard Solomon joined the meeting via speaker phone. He is keeping a close tab on the financial side and will publish the region’s financial statement in Slipstream. We have ~$130K in the bank currently, which is down slightly from last year. There are some outstanding invoices needing to be collected. Expenses were higher this year, mostly attributable to track cost increases. Guests Leslie and Michael Flores have been in the club for 4 - 5 months. They are looking forward to becoming more involved. Social Co-Chair Phyllis Gallegos has been ill for a few months, but is feeling better and looking forward to the upcoming AMP. She will try very hard to have the entire front parking lot areas reserved for Porsches only. Volunteer Chair Jimmy Gallegos is always looking for people to help out, even at the AMP (parking, check in, etc). He is adding Tech Session chair to his list of openings. 6 February

Tours Co-Chair Bill Orr has been working on custom PCA license plates. We have 291 people who registered interest out of the 400 needed with only a small effort. He has worked on updating an interactive version of Slipstream. The January issue has had 1300 views already. Editor Jim Hirsch has been producing 40 page issues for 12 months now, which only features content from our members. He is thankful for that and hope it continues. He is looking for an editor-in-training. He reported for Membership Chair John Hamilton that we have 1,687 primary and 860 affiliate members for a total of 2,547. Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr reported that our program with Equipe Rapide will continue for this year. The BMW club is also looking to share some events with us, including the COTA DEs. He wants to include links to other AX programs from our website to make sure our members are informed. The Lone Star Park venue has been temporarily lost due to a Cirque du Soleil show and they are looking for other sites. He might want to try to do another Time Trial at MSR on the 1.3 mile course. Drivers’ Education Chair Chris Tabor is beginning his fourth year in that position. He thinks that the joint region and joint club events at COTA will be a great opportunity for all. The DE dates for the year are set. He mentioned the possibility of a Track Night and maybe incorporating a Time Trial event with a DE. Will visit other events to get ideas. Rally Chair Don Sebert is glad to have help from several others, including George Luxbacher, John Harvey, and Jeff Sebert. Two rallies have been set for the year and might do one more. He will have information by the All Member Party and will submit it to the online calendar.

January 4, 2016 New Vice President Jim Falgout said that he has insurance handled for events coming up. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit mentioned we had a great Club Race, despite lower than normal turnout. We still have some Yeti mugs for sale, if board members or others are interested. Webmaster James Shoffit said we have been making improvements to the website. He requested calendar changes be emailed to calendar@ mavpca.org to make sure all parties got the information needed. He questioned if the lunch in Richardson was still getting attendees; the answer seems to be “not many.” Maybe need to cancel that one? Calendar Chair Karl Poulsen also reiterated James’ request. He is doing his best to keep up with requests as they come up. Monthly Social Chair Stephanie Ho has the February Valentine’s event set for Lavendou Restaurant in Plano on Thursday, February 9, rather than the normal week. It might be the last year at the venue. Slipstream Content Editor and Punctuation Czar Carey Spreen mentioned that the digitizing of all past issues might take a year to complete, according to UNT. He also interviewed Al Zim for his 50th Anniversary this month and will interview Ed Mayo for his 50th next month. Tour Chair Tom Martin reported that we had five events last year. The largest had 111 Porsches and 183 people in attendance. Events averaged 70 cars and 114 people. He commented that the updated mav. pca.org website is fantastic and recommends we all visit it. He is stepping down to allow Bill Orr to take the reins this year. Guest Dan Amado has been in PCA for 25 years, mostly in the northeast, but has been a Maverick

since 2010. He has been a DE instructor now for a few years and is looking forward to getting more involved. Safety Chair Bob Kramer is working to make offroad excursions at DE events safer by insisting on car inspections afterwards. He plans to utilize Doghouse Performance at the track to help in this endeavor. Social Chair Tracy Robertson asked to make sure that everyone RSVPs for board meetings, even if they don’t plan to eat. Seating and beverages need to be considered. She’s working with Phyllis for the All Member Party and is preparing for event chair presentations. David Robertson finished by saying he is always looking for questions or ideas to his email address. Lastly, he announced that Goodie Store Chair Chris Flaugh is the Maverick of the Month. Congratulations!

Historicizing Porsche: By Ash Seidl-Staley

P

Ferdinand’s Earliest Innovations

Photos contributed as noted

orsche has an amazing history. For over 118 years, developments and innovations from the Porsche brand, the Porsche business, and the Porsche family have posited many

firsts. In 1899 Ferdinand Porsche built the world’s first hybrid electric vehicle (the Lohner-Porsche, “Semper Vivus”). Twenty years later, and after realizing size and speed correlate, Ferdinand worked with Austro-Daimler developing race cars. One such petite car dubbed “Sascha,” though out-sized and out-powered by the competition, garnered a miraculous success. It won 43 races in its career, including the 1922 Targa Florio! By 1939, Ferdinand had launched Volkswagen and already become a leader in the German automobile industry. He continued his drive for innovation by designing the Mercedes-Benz type 80. The project had high hopes of achieving a land speed of over 470 mph, a speed that would Ferdinand Porsche Photo from Biography.com have shattered all records at the time and wouldn’t be realized until the late 1950s, but the start of World War II crushed the project. Ferdinand also designed racing cars for Auto Union. The Auto Union P (the P designating Porsche’s involvement) was powered by a 16-cylinder behemoth and was driven by two of racing’s greatest drivers, Hans Stuck and Tazio Nuvolari. The war temporarily halted Ferdinand’s infatuation with racing, but his inventive gene continued to flourish. In 1942 he helped design the VK4501 tank, aka the Tiger P. Although production of the tank was never picked up by the German military, some chassis (roughly ninety of them) were converted into anti-tank guns in 1943 and renamed the PanzerJäger Tiger P, or Ferdinand for short. Throughout his early career, Ferdinand proved how effective he was at pushing the limits of technological advancement on automobiles and military transportation. I bring up Ferdinand’s past innovations not to connect him to the political and social atmosphere of the time, though future articles might as his story is fascinating, but to reveal another first that hits home with me, this time by his son Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree; Ferry Porsche proves this point. In 1948 Ferry developed Porsche’s first roadgoing sports car, and I bet you can

Porsche 356/1 Roadster Photo courtesy of the Porsche Museum

guess what it was: the 356! But a little known fact, or at least overlooked, is that the prototype for the 356, dubbed the 356/1, actually possessed an engine that was mounted behind the driver, but in front of the rear axle. That’s right Mavs -- Porsche’s first 356 had a mid-engine! The two-door roadster had a wheelbase of 82.7 inches, a width of 65.4 inches, and weighed a mere 1,290 lbs. Ferry propelled his innovation with the air-cooled 1.1L Type 369 flat four. The spirited little vehicle produced a humble 40 bhp and derived most of its mechanical and suspension parts from the VW Beetle. The public became infatuated with the iconic body style that was designed by Erwin Komenda, and Porsche continued to produce the vehicle, only altering the position of the engine to behind the rear axle to save money, and to open up space for two additional seats. The history and physical location of the unique and groundbreaking 356/1, as many Mavs have seen upfront, is housed at Porsche’s museum in Stuttgart. One day, I will be lucky enough to see it, and bask in its glory. Until then I have my Porsche books, my Porsche gossip, and my Porsche projects. I told you 2017 was going to be a phenomenal year! As always . . . wrench on Mavs! Resources and good reads: Karl Ludvigsen, Porsche: Excellence was Expected (New Jersey: Princeton Publishing Inc., 1977). So this month, she asked if she could interview the guy behind the wheel and the author of the monthly Kruder’s Cars and Conversations. So here it goes -- we are putting this month’s conversation in “reverse.” The story as heard and narrated by Debi Gibson . . . Bill Kruder, owner 1971 914/4 and 1982 911SC, member since 1996 Debi Gibson: So it’s clear to most how much you enjoy hanging with your Porsches looking for any excuse to pick up a box of donuts and hang with your car and friends. When did you first realize you had a passion for cars? Bill Kruder: Well, my oldest sister Sharon and husband Bill had a ‘68 Tangerine 912 when I was 17. She used to take me out in it, and one day she actually let me drive it. I never forgot it! Guess it kinda stuck. It really got me into owning sports cars . . . Fiats to MGs to VW’s. I had a special love though for German cars. DG: Fitting with the last name Kruder! When did your first Porsche enter the story? BK: It wasn’t until we moved here to Dallas in 1994 that I decided it was time to own my dream car. In 1995 I did months of research on which Porsche to own and I decided on the ’82 911SC Coupe. DG: What’s so special about that one? BK: Well the SCs are really known to have strong engines. I re12 February

ally like the color Platinum because they aren’t as common, you don’t see a lot out there. It was important to me that the car I owned was all original too, and she was. I found a two-owner car in Hot Springs, AR, in the Dallas Morning Newspaper in the Classifieds. After Fed Ex pictures went back and forth (before iPhones of course) I purchased a one-way ticket to Arkansas, had the car checked out, and drove it five hours home. DG: What did your friends and family think? BK: They thought I was a little crazy. “Why would you want such an old car to be your daily driver?” It just kinda fulfilled a boyhood dream. Having just moved from Chicago after 20 years, it was nice to drive back and forth to work and have it waiting for me in the garage. DG: I know you retired from JC Penney after nearly 40 years with the company. So you parked it every day in their garage? I bet you got some looks and comments with the coupe parked there. BK: Oh Yeah, I did! No one could believe it and it sparked a lot of cool conversations. DG: So tell us about your latest find? How did you pick your second Porsche? BK: I always loved the 914 for its quirkiness, and when I first started with JC Penney there were two guys that had them. I thought it would be cool to own one! DG: So how did you find “the one”? BK: Well we started looking for it in August of last year and found one up in Indiana. I had an offer drafted, but a couple things didn’t sit right, and the owner was kinda dragging his feet. So one Saturday morning after Porsche Cars and Coffee, Robert, Peter, Greg and I (some of our local Mavericks) decided to make a trip to a local cigar shop and the story really began!

Hunting for the 914 over cigars

DG: Oh, trust me, I remember that Saturday well. BK: Well we sat down talking and Robert started looking on eBay. He was flipping through the listings and discovered this car right here in DFW, all original, and what sealed the deal for me was that it had the original delivery and service documents from Hagestad’s Porsche Dealership in Denver! DG: And why was that so important? BK: If you’ll remember just months earlier I had written my first “Kruders Cars and Conversations” on Bob Hagestad himself. He’s the longest running member of PCA in Maverick Region. I learned from that interview that Bob and his dad had opened up VW and Porsche stores in Denver along with a lot of other cool stories. We really developed a connection from that, and like with all my articles, the people I meet become friends. DG: So you bid on a car on eBay then?! I still can’t believe it. BK: Yes! The bidding began that morning . . . it wasn’t until 8 hours later that I “owned” Bob Hagestad’s car. It was quite a day! Four guys staring at their iPhones, cigars in hand, like expecting fathers. DG: So what are some of the characteristics you love about this particular 914? BK: Well the fact that the car was a special order. Of all things, you couldn’t purchase a black

914. It had to be special ordered including chrome “steelie” wheels. Another fun fact is that when the original owner took Bill, Bob, and the 914 delivery of the car he realized it didn’t have a Porsche badge on the front hood. He told Bob that unless it had the badge he wasn’t taking possession of the car. So Bob, as a “dealer installed option,” complied by putting a Porsche badge on the car for him. The 914/4s were badgeless so that in itself makes this one unique. DG: So let’s get back to this Kitzbuhel then. What is that about? BK: Well, turns out the first owner, when he took delivery in

November of 1970, and being from Austria, put that tag on the car in remembrance of his home town. What’s really cool is that I’ve actually spoken to him. I found through the records his phone number and gave him a call. He was in disbelief that I now owned his car with the emblem he added still intact. DG: I know you instigate a lot of car gatherings; barely a weekend passes by without an outing. What prompts your outings? BK: Well about a year ago I got involved in the monthly Porsche Cars and Coffee and then realized that most other Saturdays we all are looking for a good excuse to get out in our cars. So we started “impromptu” gatherings that usually consist of a “meet the new car” that someone has added to their garage, or heck, it might just be that someone bought new tires; it doesn’t take much with this group. It’s typically 15 to 20 cars gathering

together just over the fact we love our Porsches. We make new connections, share fun facts, and just enjoy hanging with our cars. DG: Well I think you have a “ministry” of sorts! Connecting people and their cars! BK: I enjoy it! The provenance of the car is personal . . . mine is from Bob’s dealership, others hold childhood nostalgia, or someone else has a color that is rare. Ultimately though, it’s about the person and their personal connection with their car. It’s true that a car is an extension of a personality and a history. It’s the real story. So there you have it folks, the story behind the man who arrives early to put the cones out, writes the monthly article, posts the numerous pics on Facebook, and is always finding an excuse to gather friends and their cars together at the next cool coffee spot: “Kruder,” aka the Donut Guy.

Maverick Region 2017 Autocross (AX) Events By Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

A

utocross is a very fun and popular nationwide form of motorsports that emphasizes safe competition and active participation. Participants, ranging from novices, significant others, and the highly experienced, can drive their car (multiple drivers allowed) and manage a support role to assist in running the event. Autocross differs from track-based events in that there is generally only one car on a section of the course at a time, spaced well apart from other cars, and driving against the clock at speeds generally below 60 mph, rather than at high speeds with other cars in close proximity, as in Drivers’ Education, or true wheel-to-wheel competition, as in Club Racing. The Maverick Autocross program is a low risk way to get started in competition driving almost any car. Our region puts on events in collaboration with the very well-run Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club (autocross. com) in 2017 at sites like the Burleson ISD Stadium lot (first event, February 26), Mesquite Memorial Stadium, and Mineral Wells Airpark (about 40 miles west of Fort Worth). It is an excellent way to learn car control expertise that will improve your overall driving skill. You will quickly learn about proper seating position, looking ahead, threshold braking, and precise car control, while you try to execute a perfect lap on a pylonmarked course where you will be timed to the thousandth of a second. There is a two-second time penalty for every pylon knocked over, so quick, clean, and neat driving matters. Unless you do something very unusual, the only risk to your car is contact with a rubber cone that can be easily cleaned off. Many participants have used autocross as a steppingstone to DE or Club Racing. Some very fast and wellknown road racers got their start in autocross. Some drivers still autocross after moving up to those other higherrisk activities or move on to National caliber PCA Parade or SCCA competition.

Most drivers can navigate the whole course after just one shift to second gear. The next 60 to 80 seconds are such a rush that some drivers barely take time to breathe. You do this six to eight times after just walking the unique course found at each event. The rest of the day you will meet lots of interesting people, take a shift running part of the event from registration, tech, or corner station duty, and enjoy an exciting assortment of interesting cars at speed. These are very social events where ride-along opportunities and in-car instruction will help you enjoy the experience. Although there are many classes at these combined events with Equipe Rapide, Porsche Club entrants can run in the Small Region classes, as specified in the PCA Parade Competition Rules (PCRs), at these events. For 2017 these include three fully showroom stock classes for completely stock 1990 and later Porsches (including your Cayenne, Panamera, or Macan!), four classes for all pre-1990 and lightly modified later model cars, and special classes for the fastest prepared or modified Porsches. Registration is available on line or on site. Arrive about 8 am and bring a lunch or snacks with you, since lunch breaks are not always scheduled. After tech inspection, walk the course or do so with the formal novice walk-through for some additional insights. Cars start running about 10 am and awards are presented about 4 pm. Join us for a safe and fun way to learn the limits of your Porsche!

Golden Anniversary: As told to Carey Spreen

M

r. Zim (you can call him Al) was always interested in cars. His first heartthrob was a 1958 Volvo PV444. Soon his parents bought him a two-year-old Volvo. Eventually, “work” on the Volvo was necessary. Al was attending Wilmington College in Ohio, and there was one sports car shop in Wilmington, which Al frequented for parts and advice. He spent many days in the parking lot “fixing” things that should have been left alone. At the start of his sophomore year, he convinced the sports car shop owner to hire him. The shop could be considered a “hole in the wall,” but was one of the few shops that catered to Porsches. Although Al was enamored with Austin-Healeys, he was often reminded that Porsche was the only way to travel. He soon acquired a Speedster and an SCCA competition license at the Nelson Ledges racetrack. He drove it to the track, put in four hours of racing, and drove back, all on Blue Streak race tires.

Al and Ed circa 1976

In September he began a Masters program at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He used the Volvo as a tow car and the Speedster as a race car, but also had a home-built Formula V and a 1956 Porsche-powered VW. With no place to work on the cars, the racing program sputtered to a halt, and he had sold them by graduation 1966. 18 February

PCA Tours – A 2017 Overview By Tom Martin, Region PCA Tour Co-Chair

T

he Maverick PCA Tours program enjoys a long, varied, and colorful history throughout the 50+ years of the Club. The purpose of the Tours program is to provide members with a suitable environment to explore the limits of their Porsche in a non-controlled environment, within the limits of the law. Tours were held sporadically during the early years of the Club, but in 1971, past President Charlie Davis created and conducted the first of many Tours to Eureka Springs in Arkansas. Unfortunately, they were characterized by major accidents. A couple of drivers and cars were simply not capable. In 1980, the Tour was made a non-official event and only drivers who could safely drive 1100 “spirited” miles in 2.5 days were invited! It continued as an invitation-only event until about 1985, when tourists became a major issue. By that time, Eureka Springs had turned into a mini-Branson and lost much of its charm, and Highway 1 in southeast Oklahoma became polluted with RVs. The Club continued to conduct several Tours to the Hill Country and East Texas. Most were multi-day events. In the ensuing years, thanks to a long line of

Tourmeisters, the PCA Tours program has evolved into what it is today. Tours run between 60-100 miles in length, and are completed in a few hours on a weekend. End destinations usually incorporate a suitable dining venue, and wine is almost always involved. Go figure. Major accidents are a thing of the past, possibly because of increased driver skill, but more likely due to the advanced electronic driver aids that Porsche incorporates into their vehicles. For the 2017 season, we have assembled five Tours that we hope will afford Mavericks the chance to stretch their Porsche’s “legs” and showcase some interesting roads and destinations. They include locales such as the Mitas Hill Vineyard in McKinney, the Ennis Bluebonnet Tour, Fortunata Winery in Aubrey, Lantana Lodge in Pilot Point, and even MotorSport Ranch, where we will be doing parade laps on their most excellent road course. The schedule appears on the Maverick website and also directly below. Stay tuned to Slipstream for “PCA Tour Previews,” and the Maverick website to receive all the latest details and updates on the PCA Tours. Hope to see you all sometime on a Tour!

ad, are you looking to buy another Porsche?” asked my son. “No, I am just looking,” I replied offhandedly as I continued to browse the internet ads. I understood where he was coming from, however. Like many of you, I have spent hours online just to look and to dream. Well, that dream became reality on December 5 last year as I took delivery of my 2011 997.2 Turbo S Cabriolet.

certain, I scheduled an independent PPI (pre-purchase inspection). After all, I was about to make this major purchase sight-unseen. Niagara Region PCA members were eager to help. They recommended the PPI shop as well as offered to conduct a visual inspection in my absence. PPI did uncover a small coolant leak and some minor cosmetic flaws that I used in my negotiation. The DME report was clean with no over-rev history. To transport One of One back home to Dallas, I relied on fellow Mavs. A quick Facebook post produced several solid recommendations. The journey took about two days. It was delivered without incident in an enclosed carrier. As expected, to reach my dream, sacrifices had to be made. It has been a month and 800 miles since One of One arrived in Dallas. It has been a blast to show her off to family and friends. She is everything I thought a Turbo would be and more. It’s a car with split personalities. It’s a great daily driver with ride comfort and modern conveniences. However, with the Sport Plus mode engaged and a bit more right foot pressure, a beast emerges from under the sheepskin. I can’t help it but to grin ear to ear. This was a dream fulfilled. Spring driving season will be upon us soon. See you out there, Mavs!

Top down no matter how cold!

Author’s note: Expand your dream car search: Porsche.com pre-owned section is an excellent place to begin your search for newer (993, 996, 997, 991) Porsches. The powerful Car Locator tool gives you access to Porsche inventory from U.S. dealerships. Other great sites are Autotrader.com, eBay, and our own mav.pca.org and Slipstream classifieds, along with pca.org classifieds! Surprisingly, Craigslist is a good place to sell your P-cars. The posts are picked up by many third-party websites and reposted. Your ad there will reach a national audience. Be sure to take detailed, close-up photos of your interior, especially the buttons, seats, and wheels. Lastly, PCA is full of helpful and knowledgeable folks. It’s a great resource to keep in mind. Dream on, Mavs!

Santa Boots:

Maverick Region’s Work with the Boot Campaign

By Boot Campaign Staff

F

or more than half a century the Maverick Region of the Porsche Club of America has been driving friendships and spreading good will to the Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex. During the 2016 holiday season that effort was expanded to 60 new families when the Maverick’s joined military nonprofit Boot Campaign as a sponsor in its heralded Santa Boots outreach program. Providing Christmas gifts is often a challenge for service families with financial difficulties, and Boot Campaign developed the Santa Boots program to join with other patriots to relieve some of that holiday stress while showing continued support from our grateful nation. Each year, veteran and active duty families are nominated by the Boot Campaign network to receive Santa Boots gift packages. Items are wrapped and tagged by Boot Campaign Elves, noting the gifts’ donors on the tag, and placed in personalized family boxes with a heartfelt note of gratitude from Boot Campaign. There are 20 to 30 amazing gifts per family box, including multiple WOW-type gifts to add to the excitement, and they are

Boot Campaign family box

Photo courtesy of the Boot Campaign delivered as a SURPRISE just days before Christmas. Santa Boots gifts are collected from patriotic families, businesses and organization from across the country, like PCA’s Maverick Region, which generously sponsored funds to purchase special Cinemark Movie bundles to bless 60 recipient families. The Mavericks’ donation was customized to each box based on family size, so the entire family could have a free night out at the movies that included food concessions for each family member. “The Maverick Region of PCA was excited about the opportunity to play a role in financially supporting the Boot Campaign’s Santa Boots program during Christmas 2016,” reflects Richard Solomon, the Region Treasurer. “Many of our members are veterans, so we were especially proud of what this program did to touch the lives of our American heroes.” Boot Campaign’s annual Santa Boots outreach campaign was developed in 2015 by the five founding “Boot Girls” of Boot Campaign as a holiday program that the military non-profit charity’s volunteers and sponsors could get actively involved with. “Santa Boots is such a terrific way of connecting civilian Americans to the brave men and women who served, and is our small way of making sure they feel appreciated for their service and sacrifice at a time of year when many feel stretched financially,” says Sherri Reuland, Boot Campaign Board Member and one of the Boot Campaign’s five founding Boot Girls. “We are so thankful to have dedicated and generous program partners like Maverick Region, who have taken a leap of faith with us in Santa Boots to spread holiday

cheer to those deserving families in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area,” adds Reuland. “The Santa Boots program does as much for the heart of those who participate in preparing these family gift boxes as it does for those who receive them.” Big smiles not only come to the recipients but also to Boot Campaign Elves, who wrap and customize the family gift boxes based on a family profile with “just the right touch.” The Elves then deliver the “surprise” personally to Santa Boots families for a hard-to-match experience of the season. “Santa Boots is about more than Christmas gifts or patriotism to me,” says Pamela Hughes, a Boot Campaign Elf. “Santa Boots lets me bring love and hope to families during a time that may be difficult. When they receive a box, you can see that it’s like they are overwhelmed with a sense of hope and knowing that people care more than they knew.” Adds Sgt. First Class Nurse (Ret.) Cassandra Cantin, U.S. Army, a Boot Campaign Hero Ambassador and Elf: “This experience has truly changed my life as well as the lives of so many veterans and their families. It’s one thing to hear someone say ‘thank you for your service,’ but it’s a whole different ball game when someone says it and then shows up with this big box of thanks. It shows that not only do you matter for showing what you are willing to sacrifice, but your family matters and we are thinking about you all.” “We are thrilled and honored to have the Boot Campaign as one of only two charities we support through our club activities,” concludes Solomon. “We look forward to future events we can partner with the Boot Campaign to support our military veterans and active duty service men and women.” 27

2016 Maverick Region Financial Statement By Richard Solomon, Region Treasurer

T

he 2016 financials for the Maverick Region of Porsche Club of AM been inAmerica 7:55 have cluded in this month’s magazine 01/07/17 for transparency toCash ourBasis members of all club activities. It is important to all of us on this Board to be good stewards of what we are given to further expand our club, but to also further the brand of Porsche Club of America and Porsche. 2016 results reflected a net cost to the club of $9,755, which is a decline as compared to 2015. This is attributable to higher track expenses related to our Driver Education programs and planned excess costs towards club-wide events. Also, the timing for receipt of certain sponsorships and advertising income contributed to this position. Lastly, we are proud to mention that through the generosity of our club members and by decision of the Board, we were able to provide direct financial support to two region charities totaling $18,095. So, Thank You! In conclusion, despite these results, the club remains on strong financial footing to meet the needs of its members and the charities we support. We will continue to work to improve your club experience while maintaining the integrity of our financial charge.

Around the Bend... By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

riving Friendships! By the time you’re reading this, I hope you’ve been able to keep at least one of your 2017 New Year resolutions! The one I’m most interested in is driving your Porsche as often as possible and participating in at least one new Maverick Region driving event this year to meet your fellow club members. The club’s tagline, “Driving Friendships”, is a mindset that I hope all Maverick members can embrace in becoming an active club participant of the Maverick Region. You’ve got a sports car for all seasons at your disposal and lots of potential new friendships with members of our club, so putting that tagline into action should be of high interest to each of you. Going a bit further with my ongoing reminders for our members to drive our German engineering marvels as frequently as possible, perhaps author Dwight Knowlton and his mantra of “Carpe Viam” is one you should adopt for 2017. The literal translation of that is “Seize the Road”. Now that is a proper call to action for all of our Maverick Region Porsche owners! For all of our members who may need some help in determining how best to “seize the road”, look no further than the contents of this issue. In fact, the cover photo this month highlights how many of our driving events have a very visible starting point. Begin with the club calendar on page 1. You’ll find a complete listing of all club events for the next four months here. Of course, also check the online calendar on our web site at mav.pca.org for any last minute schedule changes.

Next, check page 10. You’ll find information on the PCA Spring Treffen held in our own Hill Country, Fiesta New Mexico held in our neighboring Roadrunner Region, and the schedule of our monthly Maverick lunches. These are great driving opportunities to meet many like-minded Porsche owners. On page 14, our first Drivers’ Education event at MSR is highlighted. Participate on the track or come out and spectate - all members are welcome! Page 17 provides our season Autocross overview and schedule the most fun you can have in 60 seconds! Information on our PCA Tour events, which feature tremendous roads and great destinations, is found on page 19. The upcoming Club Race/Solo DE at COTA is highlighted on page 28. You can even find info on PCA license plates for your Porsche on page 14. Finally, our club event chairs are member volunteers devoted to ensuring that you enjoy your Porsche to the ultimate degree possible. Please review page 4 to get to know these important volunteers and say “thank you” the next time you see them in appreciation for their efforts on all of our behalf. In particular, Bob Kramer is one of our two new Safety Co-Chairs and has already begun helping new DE participants get tech inspections completed. Bob shared that Doghouse Performance is a new vendor located on site at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson. They have let Bob know that they will provide tech inspections free of charge to Maverick DE participants. You can contact them at 817-396-4211. Of course, your local Porsche dealers and independent Porsche repair shops also offer this service for you. Even more event info will be found in the upcoming March Slipstream. Now, stop reading and Carpe Viam every day in your Porsche!
