My Thoughts by Jan Mayo, Managing Editor

hat an extraordinary month it has been preparing this issue. For several months I’ve been “mentioning” that having some help putting Slipstream together would be really nice and that we were changing publisher programs for just that opportunity. All that niceness was met with resounding silence, thank you very much.

W

Then I asked Mark Gluck to prepare me a “HELP” ad which was in my column last month. And I had seven responses! Who says advertising doesnít work. But I want to know, was it the “HELP” or the straggly hair and frantic expression? Now the dilemma is what to do with whom, or who to have do what, and/or how, when, whether, and what. What what? Whew! We’re working on that as we speak, so if you volunteered and I haven’t gotten back with you, don’t fret or feel like I’ve called wolf and then backed off to watch the fracas. There are little things and big things that can be so very helpful. I applaud all of you that have stood up!

Charlie Davis and Wendy Shoffit are always wonderful providing beautiful coves and event shots and Travis Howard gave me some additional great shots from Eagles Canyon. Chuck McCoy and Maria & Mike Stafford added to Clint Blackman’s usual lone photographic stint for the latest Sunday Drive. Lori Mauthe provided all the pictures for her Rennsport article as well as the one of her at the finish of the 60 mile walk. (You’ll have to read her article to see what this is about.) Then Melissa Gatlin provided some fun pictures to accompany Bob Lewis’s from the Happy Hour. Bob Lewis also wrote about the Happy Hour and Mike Lockas did too. See if you can figure out how I mooshed the two together. That was great fun. So you see, YOU too can see your name in print. It’s real easy. Just shoot!

This month had another First. While I occasionally have volunteer articles, this month I had TWO. Ok, they were both by the same person, Lori Mauthe, but hey! Any volunteer is wonderful. Look for her recap of Rennsport III and be awed by the company this girl keeps. Not only that, the FIRST that I mentioned is that I was provided pictures by 10 different people. That’s why I said in the photo credit box up front that there were too many wonderful people to mention. But I can mention and thank everyone here. [Uh oh, here I go again risking leaving someone out. I’ll apologize up front.]

Catch My Draft by James Shoffit, Region President hh, the New Year. We are finally done with the holidays, and trying to recover from the overspending, overeating, and oversleeping. It’s time for a fresh start!

A

We have new Autocross and Time Trial chairmen – Bryan Bell will still be assisting them, but we welcome Clay Perrine and Travis Howard to those roles. One of the exciting new things that Travis has cooked up for us (hopefully I am not spoiling a surprise for anyone) is a Time Trial at Motorsport Ranch. So all you Drivers Education people who longed to get some real lap times will have your chance. And all you time trailers longing for a REAL road course, not lined by cones – you have your chance as well!

The other good “first event” for anyone is the Happy Hour at Mac’s in Colleyville. And finally, the first weekend in February we will be hosting the National Board Meeting, where all the Presidents and Zone Reps from around the country are invited to discuss all the national business going on. They are having a special dinner on Saturday, February 2nd, in Solana at Diego’s, which you will need to RSVP for. Look for the ad here in Slipstream for more details. Come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

Ther will be a lot of differences – worker changes will be different, there will be NO cones to hit and therefore no cone penalties. We are actually splitting the day into TWO time trial events (partially to recoup the cost of renting the track), which will also give more people access to the event. One will be in the morning, and one in the afternoon. We will have to limit the attendance on this, since there are only so many cars we can allow to run within our time constraints. We will publish more information as we get closer to the date and iron out the details. I think this will be a blast, and something we want to repeat! Hopefully my engine will have a fresh start this year as well. I had a bad shift (I can hear everyone snickering now – “another one?”) and ended up selecting first instead of third. A release of the clutch and an over-rev later, the engine was making expensive sounds as I idled back to pits. So I bought myself a leak-down tester (hey ANYTHING can be an excuse to buy more tools!) to determine how many valves I bent. Good news! No bent valves (or the leak-down test didn’t reveal any). Bad news – something inside is making a knocking sound, so I am going to take it apart and see what is going on. Should be fun, and of course, another opportunity to buy more tools! January has very little in the way of driving events – people from up North can’t imagine why not, but we think it is too cold out in January. But we do have a few social events for you to try out. EVERYONE is welcome to come to the new member party – those that joined within the past year, those that have been members, but never attended an event, and those that haven’t missed an event in years. This is a perfect “first event” to find out what all we do – and it is free! 5

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis, Secretary n attendance: James Shoffit, Charlie Davis, Teri Davis, Bryan Bell, Travis Howard, Robyn Howard, Tracey Gross, Jan Mayo, Clint Blackman, Denny Payne, Mark Gluck, Lisa Steele, Bob Lewis, Bob Kuykendall, Andy Mears. James called the meeting to order at 7:00.

I

James detailed his recent stop light ticket, issued by mail from the City of Coppell. He steadfastly claims to not have been in the car. We believed him. Charlie announced that the new 2008 AX/TT Rules are posted on the club website. Teri again asked if there was room for Rally dates on the 2008 Events Calendar. We learned that Robyn was the new Calendar Chair. A couple of AX dates are still pending, since Clay is still confirming venues. Bryan, speaking up so Charlie could hear, admitted that he, not Robyn, has the most up-to-date calendar. He promised to send it via e-mail to the board members. He announced that there will be a dual Time Trial event at MSR in 2008. It is scheduled for June 21. This generated a lot of discussion and excitement.

Lisa is getting mean! Approximately $3000 is overdue for Slipstream ads, and she wants them to pay now. Travis is getting comfortable being TT Chair. He has dates for all TT events in 2008. He and Bob Manskey are good friends. Robyn is working on the calendar. Bob K said we still have money. Although the final bills for Eagles Canyon DE are not in yet, he hopes we may be in the black for the year. He plans to have the 2007 books closed by the January board meeting. Bob L has planned the first 3 Happy Hours of 2008. Tracey reported that only 70 people attended the Founder’s Day banquet. She plans to try a more formal venue in 2008 to see if more people will attend. Even with the low attendance, the silent auction generated about $2000 for the HH Hope House. Because of the low attendance, it cost the club $5700 to do the Founder’s Day banquet. 72 people have made reservations for the Holiday Party. She reminded us that the New Member Party is on January 26th. She also asked us to please attend the dinner for the National Board Meeting. She will reschedule the Wine Tasting which now conflicts with one of the autocrosses. Jan said she needs an article about the Happy Hour by this coming Saturday and also requested something about the recent Sunday Drive. She wants pictures from the DE at Eagles Canyon, and already has an article and pictures regarding the Rennsport Reunion. Finally, she reminded us that her deadline is the Saturday after the Board Meeting! Clint is planning a Christmas Lights Drive on December 16th. In spite of the short notice, he has lots of interest. Denny again reminded us that the website calendar lags behind the one in Slipstream and encouraged us to give him updates. He reported that the region’s website went down for 4 hours on Monday, December 3. This was due to a problem on the National server. Mark said that he has requested insurance certificates for all December events and is working on ads for 2008. Andy, wearing his Joel hat (Membership), said he needs $1000 for postage. He suggested we be aggressive purging ex-members from our membership roster. After sharing the few cookies still on the plate, James adjourned at 8:26 PM.

November Sunday Drive

East Texas roads in the fall are a Porsche driver’s dream. We toured over some of the best rolling pavement our state has to offer! Our group of 12 Boxsters, Carreras, a 928, and a Toureg enjoyed one of the best country drives I have ever been on. Picture a line of fantastic Porsches running down tree canopied country roads with autumn leaves swirling. That was our day. We started from East Dallas and took off through the country roads of Mineola, Oak Grove, Winnsboro and Red Springs. Our tour ended in the beautiful Tyler State 12

ou know that feeling when you find a nice stretch of really smooth road. It’s just you and your car… and together you settle into “a groove.” The road winds to the right and then slowly back to left. Your Porsche is “a part of you.” You wind down beautiful country lanes with canopies of big oaks, sweet gums and pines that are all blended into a painting of bright fall colors. Leaves of every color cover the road and swirl in tornados as you run by in a blur. The road gently soars up a hill and down to a green valley. Each vista turns into another, better view. The top is down and you feel the wind as you cruise through the country. The air is not too hot… the car is cool. The sun is shining on you. It’s all… all….So Right…. it’s almost a dream. That was the day our Sunday Drivers experienced November 11th.

space, seating areas and a viewing gallery. Control, grid and the corner workers could communicate, we could announce run groups by flag and, if no one blinked, it would look as if we had been ready for weeks. Because no one had driven the track the first job at the instructor clinic on Friday was to get out there and learn how to drive the thing. Walk it, talk it and drive it took much of the day and a final discussion set the company line for the track and the weekend. At least the instructors would have seen turns 5 and 6 before the students did and that must be a good thing. At the drivers meeting, participants were instructed on all the usual things plus the presence of Armco barriers and large hay bales. This is not Motor Sport Ranch and there are things to hit here, so take care. And we were off. Grid worked like a charm. Mary in the tower could communicate, corner workers could see and be seen, Black Flag was in place. Drivers returned from early runs with stories of amazing skill and fortitude as they crested the hill into turn 3, dived into 5 and up through 6, braked far too early for 7, scared themselves entering 9 and again through 10, made a mess of 13 up the hill onto the back straight and then missed the all important apex at 15. Down the long start-finish straight to turn 1 and 2 and the realization that unless you put the car through in the right place through 1 it is quite difficult to get into position for 2.

Wendy’s thumb’s UP means she’s ready to go

Bill Miller, Mike Lapp and I had a few quick laps as the sun set Saturday and that was as much fun as I can remember since the last time I drove up close and personal with those two. I just love the sound of those cars. Now you know that DE is not racing so we were very careful to give clear and early passing signals and to lift to let the other guy by. Sunday was a mess. Not only meeting the officer, but there was fog. Visibility was down to 100 yards or less and there was an amazing amount of water on the ground. It hadn’t rained so it was just the fog and heavy dew. Delay was inevitable but by careful re-arrangement of the schedule everyone got their expected track time and the day went very well. In fact the whole weekend was an amazing and somewhat unexpected success.

Thanks to David Cook the owner of the track for his determination to be ready, thanks to Bryan Henderson, a Maverick member and the new GM of the track, and his team for so many long days and nights as he lead the charge to the finish line. Thanks also to them for looking after us so well during the weekend, nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to our very professional corner workers who kept us safe, to Mary in the tower, to Jan Mayo who controlled the grid. Thanks to Joel Nannis for his extraordinary work with registration and to Wendy Shoffit who was always there to help. Thanks to Bob Benson our safety chair for many hours of work getting us ready . Thanks to Keith Olcha and John Sandusky who lead the Instructor Clinic on Friday and the instructor corps through the weekend. Thanks to the team leaders, advanced instructors and instructors who worked so hard all weekend. Thanks to Lisa Steele for the care and attention to our hospitality needs and to Phil Hallenbeck for the arrangements of golf carts, temporary facilities and for making sure participants were doing well. Thanks also to the many members who stepped up and helped during the weekend. Above all, thanks to you the drivers who came out on faith that Information on the grid is the key we would be ready. I hope you had a wonderful time and enjoyed driving your car on this exciting new track. Next year we will alternate between ECR and Motorsport Ranch. The Club Race in May will be at ECR and we will have an uninstructed DE as usual that weekend. We have six events next year so make your plans to come out and drive as often as you can. The DE committee is working hard to make these events the premier driving opportunity in North Texas, if you have any ideas on ways to improve the program please let me know. Now, how do I spell deferred?

Rennsport III by Lori (Schutz) Mauthe

Y

ou’ve heard the expression – “Once in a blue

moon?” Rennsport happens every 3 years – and for those of you who missed this wonderful event, don’t worry, we hear that there will be a Rennsport IV in 2010. The Olympics happen every 4 years which seems just too long to wait until the next time. You only have to wait 3 for the next Rennsport!

So just what is Rennsport? This is an event organized by Porsche Cars North America, and brings together racing Porsches since the first 356. In 2007, the event took place at Daytona International Speedway November 1st -4th. On the historic ROVAL – road course oval combination of the Rolex 24 Hour fame, we saw a true blast from the past. This year’s featured models were the 917s, 956 and 962 – and they came from all over the world to participate. The weekend was packed full of practice, qualifying and racing sessions, along Paul and Marci Thieme, loving with exhibition laps and a Daytona Rennsport! concours right in pit lane.

Photos taken & provided by Lori Mauthe

those of you new to PCA and Porsches, Peter Schutz was president and CEO of Porsche AG when the 956/962s were conceived and dominated road racing around the world. The weekend was peppered with historic moments in the making. Sure, we had the usual Porsches, Sunshine and Good Friends typical of PCA events. Rennsport took this salute to a whole new level. The Mr. Miller car got the attention of Porsche Motorsports, and from the time the racecar left the trailer and was in the garage #20, an offer was made- “Can our factory driver, Patrick Long, take the car out for a practice session?” Marci and Paul were so flattered they almost forgot to say “Yes!” Patrick Long is a lean mean, young race car driver who was born when the 962 was an idea in Weissach! Patrick proceeded to qualify the #68 Miller 962 at just one second slower than the Andretti’s qualifying time in the 1989 Daytona 24 Hour race! This was good enough for outside pole with 1 minute 42 seconds. On Friday afternoon, after the Group 5 practice, Peter Schutz went over to say hello to a friend, Derek Bell. Derek was sitting on the pit wall after getting out of the Jägermeister 962. Peter patted him on the shoulder and said “So

For Western Michigan Region the event was of particular significance. Members Marci and Paul Thieme brought Mr. Miller, their beautiful #68 962, originally driven by Michael and Mario Andretti in the 1989 running of the Daytona 24 hour race. Their race group was Group 5 for the weekend. Pit crew members included WMR member Rick Riley and former WMR Daniel Bird. My husband Peter and

Derek, do you remember how to drive these cars?” Derek responded with a huge grin, very happy to see his friend – you see Derek was a factory driver when Peter was at the helm of Porsche. Together they experienced dozens of wins in Europe, the US and around the world in the 956/962 Porsche. Paul and owner of sister car #67 in the Garage

Saturday was another historic landmark as Paul drove his 962 for the first time – at Daytona no less. Paul drove in the exhibition class, good choice for an initial cruise. Yes, it was too slow and lots of other traffic, however for those of us watching it was akin to seeing fighter jets flying in

During lap 1, first place goes to 3rd. Before lap 2, Patrick has the #86 Miller 962 in first place. Over the next several laps the lead changes back and forth between 1st and 2nd place, our #86 and the #10 Wynn 962 – as they catch slower traffic and lap the field. Patrick makes up time through the bus stop chicane on the back side of the tri-oval leading onto the banking in turn 3. On the final lap, this exchange occurs again, and #86 is victorious coming home in 1st place!

formation. Coming around the banking between turns 3 and 4, to see dozens of 962s was a blast from the past, a truly beautiful sight to bring tears to our eyes. Brumos Porsche made a grand appearance with over a dozen significant Porsches in the garage and under the Brumos tent. Several were in the grand livery Brumos is famous for, white with the blue and red strip from front to rear, and #59. The Brumos family lost their leader, Bob Snodgrass, early this year, and he would have been so proud

Lap 8 - and the checkered flag waves!

A jubilant pit crew and cheering section runs over to victory circle, where the top three are lined up. Patrick comes over to Paul and Marci to exclaim “Had I realized your car was such a handful, I might not have said Yes so quickly. I’m so glad that I did!”. The 962, unlike the current RS Spyder Patrick drives, does not have power steering and other suspension enhancements, and requires more strength to maneuver, plus is a bigger car all around. During Patrick’s acceptance speech, he says, “I would like to thank Marci for letting me drive her wonderful car this weekend. What started out to be a few practice laps turned into a full weekend of racing that I will never forget.” Hey Patrick neither will we!

Hurley Haywood chats with Dad (Peter Schutz), and me.

of the showing. Hurley Haywood, another special driver/ friend, was in attendance driving the various #59 Porsches in different racing groups throughout the weekend. Saturday night we had a very nice dinner at Gene’s Steak House, a regular Daytona dinner spot for Dan and Rick. Our group included Ed and Sandy Scott (WMR), and our friend Ray Shaeffer from Brumos Porsche, and his girlfriend Krista. Ah, the stories that were told that evening! Sunday is race day – and the excitement is building for the race. Morning practice goes well, Patrick was very close to the qualifying times. The car looks fantastic and finally 1pm rolls around and it’s time to head out to the grid. The race is scheduled for 8 laps. After one pace lap, they come around turn 4 with a roar and thunder we remember well.

Happy Hour at Daddy Jack’s by Mike Lockas and Bob Lewis

O

n November 15 we congregated at Daddy Jack’s Lobster and Chowder House in downtown Fort Worth. Friends and fellowship are the reasons many of us attend the Maverick happy hours that occur on the 3rd Thursday of each month. This month we had 30 members of our extended family in attendance. Some are brand new to the family, while others are long standing members that we don’t see that often. This is what makes this time special to many of us. This is a time to get to know people in an atmosphere different from the track or the many other activities that the Maverick Region hosts every month.

tee for the last several years, I didn’t know how much he did to keep this program going. Thanks for all your efforts, Dennis! I hope that Monda, Bob, and I can do justice to the great program that you have left for us. Enjoy the beautiful state of New Mexico and your retirement.

Willa & Rob Stimson

I was impressed with the seafood, which was moderately priced. The parking was easy since it’s in downtown Fort Worth where parking is free in the evening. They even had valet parking for Daddy Jack’s. Since this location is in the western part of the Maverick Region, there were people I had not seen at Happy Hours before. For instance I had not met Glen Gatlin’s wife, Melissa, before. And Charlie Davis from even farther west was there. The Happy Hour committee is going to add some places we have not been before. So keep alert and come out to enjoy the conversation and food. We promise to talk about our cars only half of the time. After all we might need to explain to There’s a story here, Pam? those who are new about the DE’s (drivers education weekends; sometimes referred to as track days), Autocrosses, Time Trials (an autocross type layout with 3 non-stop laps), Rallies, Concours, and Sunday Tours. Time talking about our social events doesn’t count as car talk, does it? On a personal note, I would like to recognize Dennis Chamberlain who recently relocated to New Mexico. Dennis was the mentor chair and Happy Hour leader for the last 4+ years. His leadership was an inspiration to many new and long time members.
