ose weight, put the toilet seat down (not my idea), exercise more, make the bed everyday (also not my idea), eat healthy food (good luck with this one, only if hamburgers are deemed healthy), pick up my clothes and keep my closet neat (you guessed it, also not my idea!)

OK, you get the idea. These are all my New Year’s Resolutions. It is a safe bet that most, if not all of them will have been broken by the time you are reading this. That is ok, but it is nice to have goals and dreams to keep me focused and going in the right direction even if there is a stumble or two along the way. In that spirit, there are a couple of resolutions I do plan on keeping. I absolutely pledge to do everything I can as President to improve the quality of events and activities of the Maverick Region and do as much as I can to see that every idea is heard. Sunday, January 31st. is our “Member’s Party.” We used to call it the New Member’s Party, but it is more than that. The Member’s party is the perfect place to renew old acquaintances, and make new ones. It is also a time to learn about all our events and let us know what we can do to make them better. This year we will have a suggestion box. I am counting on you to fill it up with ways to help us make this club even better! Last month I talked about the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House (HHHH) and our goal of making the backyard of the home a pleasant and safe place for the moms and children. Well, we are going along at full steam. Linda (spit the bit) Bambina is taking the lead. As of this writing, plans are being drawn, and equipment and materials are being selected. If you would like to help us, there is plenty of ways to get involved. Just contact Linda, Clara Lewis or myself. We will find a way to get you in the game.

s we start another year, I for one have to admit 2010 is going to be a good year if I can help it. I know many of us were forced to make some adjustments last year, but we made it to the dawn of another. I hope each and every one of you made the most of what you were blessed with. Hopefully you came out and made some new friends at an event or two and enjoyed your car for the many reasons you bought it. Look over the calendar and make some plans to enjoy what we have with other Mavericks even more this year. I know I plan to. I hope you enjoy this issue as it’s packed full of a variety of stories that normally don’t appear between these covers. This isn’t because I wouldn’t like to see it more often, but because a number of our good members stepped up and sent in a slice from their world. Don’t you love hearing what others are up to? We are fortunate to have articles that take us from Germany to Arkansas, to the love of cars, to the seat of Porsches newest creation. Man, I have to get a drive under my belt before I pass judgment. From everything I have heard, the Panamera is a four door like no other!

Maverick Minutes Lisa Steele, Secretary

M

r. President started off the meeting with saying that “November was an AWESOME month” and he confirmed several chair changes for the upcoming year. Tannia Dobbins will be our new AX Chair with help from Robyn Howard. Robyn plans on attending Board meetings and reporting on AX activities. Christy Payne will be the new Social Chair. Our new PR Chair will be Andrea Bell while Chris Christensen will be helping out with Thursday night Happy Hours. That was about all from Mike and now on to our round the table reports from each Chair. Carey Spreen was up first with a report on his Night Rally. He had about 5 cars join him but quickly found out that someone (not a MRPCA member) was following the route of glow sticks and decided to pick them up for themselves…how rude! Carey learned an important lesson: Use less portable markers when marking a route. Carey is still in search for a new volunteer to take over as Chair or Co-Chair for Rallys. He also had a great idea

about trying out the SCCA Rally to get some ideas to implement for a Maverick Rally. Bob Lewis reported that November’s Happy Hour at Trinity Hall Irish Pub was good with about 25-26 people. It was a lively place and the food was nice. Bob announced that December’s HH will be at Big Buck’s Brewery and Steakhouse. Bob also reminded the group that the Hope House Christmas Party will be on Dec. 19th at the Presbyterian Church in Mineral Wells. A live German band will be providing some lively entertainment and Larry Ramsey will be dressing up as good ol’ Santa himself. Chris Christensen was present. He has recently been writing those wonderful articles telling us about all of the fun they are having at Happy Hours. WELCOME Chris! Richard Bradley reported that Slipstream is going well. He did make mention that the information on the website had the correct date, but incorrect day for the Christmas Party. If you read and I mean “really read” Slipstream, you already had the correct information. Keep those articles coming in. Jan Mayo announced that she has a possible new advertiser. His name is Kevin Fortier with KAF Systems. They specialize in really cool functional art furniture. Look for them coming soon to a possible ½ page in Slipstream. We welcome our newest advertiser Invisibra! Believe me when I say that there were several people in the room that got the wrong idea on this product…it had to be explained that it is a high quality paint protection film that helps protect your car. Wendy Shoffit started her report with a many thanks to all who helped make Founders’ Day a success. The Silent Auction went really well and had a net profit of $2,840 all going to the Hope House. Wendy also wrote out “Thank You” notes to all sponsors who gave to the auction and raffle. Before Wendy hands over her Social Hat to Christy, she has the Holiday Party all planned with Macaroni Grill catering. There are only 15 people who have signed up to attend so an email blast will go out to encourage more people to get signed up. Linda Bambina had two items on her agenda to share with the group. She announced that Clara and Bob Lewis will not be able to attend the Christmas Party, so Linda will be bringing the cute little “Hope House” Clara made to hold the Wal-Mart gift cards. The second item Linda

8

talked about was Round-Up. She is investigating some different possibilities to change up Round-Up so that it will not require so much time and preparation for this event. Apparently, the 356 Club goes to some great places (mostly touring and places to eat) without giving goodie bags, shirts, and there are no competitive events. It would be a very “organized tour.” Jack Griffin spoke up and reminded the group that PCA has a wonderful event every year called Porsche Palooza in Arkansas. Linda loved the idea of maybe “piggybacking” on their event. Stayed tuned for the latest updates! Lisa Steele gave big thanks to Jack Griffin for helping make our last DE a success with Hooters as our caterer. Everyone really liked the food and the price was absolutely unbeatable. I plan to see if we can get them back out at the track again and maybe even for our Club Race. Christy Payne will be officially taking over as Social Chair for the Member’s Party in January (with some helpful guidance from Wendy.) She already has some ideas for some social events for next year. One being the idea to combine Founder’s Day and the Christmas Party combining both of the budgets in to one…sounds like this could be a great idea! Christy also shared an idea that James Shoffit had. It was suggested that we start having a Thursday lunch at Kincaid’s in Southlake. Apparently, this place has some awesome burgers.

events are posted and filling up dates quickly. Speaking of calendar…Robyn Howard said that the calendar is good and all Autocross and Time Trial dates are all on it. Mike finished up the meeting with three more items of discussion on his agenda. First, he received an email from 5th Gear telling him they would love to have a Swap meet or Concours at their new facility. Everyone really liked this idea. The second item really sparked some excitement in the room. Apparently, the backyard at the Hope House is in shambles. Mike thought it would be nice to create a garden area for the mothers to sit and enjoy a peaceful place and have a nice play area for the kids. Linda Bambina immediately volunteered to get some quotes and line up some possible landscape architects. The goal for this project to be complete is some time in Spring…just in time to see the flowers bloom and enjoy the beautiful weather. The last item on Mike’s list was announcing Mav of the Month…here it comes…are you really ready…well, if you have already read this issue of Slipstream, then you know that Tracey Gross is being honored for all that she gives to this club. Meeting Adjourned around 8:30.

Pat Friend wanted to talk about some possible changes we could make to the Goodie Store website. Pat spoke with National about how they do their goodie store and he found that most regions use a company that sets up the website and manages pretty much the whole thing but does take 80% of the net profit. Since we make no profit as is, if we went with this type of service, we would start making 20% on all of our goodies sold. Pat is going to investigate this further with the help of some information that Christy has on a company that provides this same type of service. They will compare notes and see if this is the direction we want to go with our Goodie Store. Jack Griffin (my hero) reported that the Concours at the Cooper Aerobic Center was a good event. The food was furnished by Rockfish and was loved by all. Jack mentioned that the Cooper Aerobic Center would love to have more events at their place. Bryan Bell, Mr. Vice President, will be “running” the next board meeting and rumor has it that it will be finished in record time. I can’t wait! Travis Howard announced a schedule change for the Time Trial at Motor Sport Ranch from May 16 to 23rd. Just keep an eye out for the calendar because next year’s January 9

Feels Like Home by Bob Beck

P

orsche likes to speak of its DNA. Study the Porsche family of cars and you’ll understand what Porsche’s DNA is all about. It’s a family of technology, passion and proportion in motion. It is perhaps best said that nothing drives like a 911. If you are going to build the ultimate sports car it goes without saying that it will be compared to a 911. Introduced in 1964, the archetype 911 defines the sports car. On the other hand if you are going to build an ultimate sports sedan it would typically be compared to an Audi/ Mercedes/BMW/Maserati-ish sort of thing. There are a lot of good choices in the luxury sports sedan category – A8, M5, CLS AMG, Quattroporte. At one time it would have been hard to choose, but no longer. Today there is really only one choice and it is unequivocally the Porsche Panamera. It’s that good. You simply need drive it to understand. As a born skeptic, I traveled off to sample the new Panamera as a 911 man. On the roads of Milwaukee and the track at Road America, I would test the Panamera as a 911 devotee. Being a 911 man I really don’t do automotive change well. With apologies to Porsche, I haven’t even completely accepted the Cayenne. I have owned or driven every type Porsche made and enjoyed them all but I’m a 911 man at heart. There is something intangible that gets in your blood with the 911. It is driving perfection. Now, frankly, my automotive world order has been rocked. A middle age fog could be clouding my vision but I’m rethinking the whole 911 man thing. Maybe a Panamera could fit in my garage, too? Maybe I’d like to take the wife and kids when I lap the Nürburgring. No, my manhood is not withering as we speak. I am still loyal to the 911 but the Panamera is an amazing car. Perhaps it’s even worthy of consideration as the perfect Porsche. The technology and numbers of the Panamera have been well documented by now. It brings a lot to the game with an efficient direct injection engine mated to a smooth 7-speed PDK transmission with all of the suspension and engine tuning buttons one could dream of located on the center console. S and 4S versions sport a 4.8-liter, 400 hp V8 engine, while the Turbo version pumps out a conservative 500 hp to all four wheels. When the launch control feature activates, it’s nothing short of amazing. Prices range from $90K to over $130K. 10

Porsche Panamera, embrace the moment.

All this tech goodness delivers stunning performance. The performance is beyond the sports sedan expectations. It’s really a super sedan. The Panamera Turbo has a Porsche

stated zero-to-sixty of 3.8 seconds, only three-tenths slower than the 911 Turbo. In usual Porsche fashion, these numbers are a bit conservative as the street times are rumored to be 3.5 for the Turbo Panamera. The 400 hp normally aspirated Panamera turns in a healthy 5.2 second zero-to-sixty. Tie this together with the legendary Porsche chassis and brakes and we’re off to the races. But numbers and factoids don’t make a Porsche. (Heck, the Corvette has good numbers but it ain’t no Porsche, my friend.) The roads and race tracks of the real world is where Porsche has earned its’ reputation. My Panamera test drive came with real world extremes. Milwaukee has some of the worst weather rutted roads in the world. Contrast this with Road America, just outside of Milwaukee, one of the best driving, well-storied tracks in the country. So how does it drive? As expected in a six-figure car, the Panamera is prefect for a long haul drive in the city or country. The long wheelbase and sophisticated suspension tuning make for a perfect compromise of supple ride and top of the class handling. With smooth PDK transmission, efficient direct injection power in the 400 or 500 hp range, it takes off like your favorite executive jet. To complete the experience, Porsche adds to that what it calls an “executive class interior” (think Bentley meets lear jet). Porsche is very, very good at most things, but they have yet to master Mother Nature. So I tackled Road America in the wet... very wet. An ark would have been more appropriate for the biblical proportions of rain. Chassis dynamics and physics come to play much earlier in this kind of weather. Fortunately for me I had Porsche factory driver Patrick Long riding shotgun to help temper my driving skills. Belted in a six-figure car with 500 horsepower on a very wet track I had never driven, Patrick and I paddled up to

Feels Like Home continued by Bob Beck

speed. Once settled into the cockpit, I would have sworn I had jumped into a 911. It felt like home. The IP and cockpit are designed to feel like home for the 911 driver. The power and handling are world-class good. The car feels completely neutral and begs to be pushed hard even in the wet. The steering is precise, but a little numb on feedback compared to the 911, but this is understandable with the large engine up front. The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s offered amazing grip as I found out when I unleashed the 500 hp Turbo on the back straight. The thrust was astonishing. The only thing that felt out of sorts were the sweet engine sounds coming from the wrong end of car. Oh well, lots of Le Mans winning cars have had the engine up front. A lot has been made of the exterior design. Some say it’s not the best looking car ever made. Certainly, the same was said of the original Beetle and even the first 911, the 901. The Panamera looks like a Porsche and one must see it in person to judge how well form follows function. My experience is that when you see it in person and drive it at speed and the Panamera morphs into a thing of absolute beauty. Form so very much follows function. The proportions of the car in motion define its beauty. Porsches are not static objects. Touch the Panamera, drive it, and you will see the beauty. Whether driving on Road America or up to your favorite valet parking event on Saturday night and you are front row material. The most important design feature of the Panamera is the interior. Fittingly this is the first Porsche that focuses on passengers as well as the driver. It is a unique interior synthesis between sports car and luxury sedan. It is a distinctly Porsche interior with a splash of English-like coachwork and luxury to boot. This the most luxurious interior seen from Stuttgart. Four things immediately stand out: first, the ascending center console, reminiscent of the Carrera GT; second, the four individual seats, all 911-style sport seats for great support; third, the amount of space in the rear, where even taller passengers will find plenty of legroom and headroom (with room for those well over 6 feet tall); and fourth, the versatility of the luggage compartment, thanks to the folding rear seats. The driver feels coddled by all the dynamic features of the Panamera interior - seat position, pedal placement, instrument panel and so on. Fortunately the dynamic luxury the driver feels is shared with all the passengers - the experience is indistinguishable

from one seat to the next. The center console extends into the rear seats, so the rear passengers can access their individual gadgets for climate control and seating options. Every surface can be covered in the rich leather with wood and metal touches. In fact the only people who are not going to enjoy this interior are the folks at Mercedes or Bentley. It is stunning. I sense a paradigm shift coming and it is the Panamera. Perhaps this is the first archetype for the super sedan. Porsche definitely built a better sedan and in the process they may have built one of the best Porsches ever. Sixty plus years ago, Dr. Ferry Porsche built the car he wanted and the world loved. Now Porsche has built the car you and your family will want. The Panamera has arrived. Embrace the moment and take a trip to your local Porsche dealership.

The Longest Road to Porsche Happiness by Marty Lumpkin

H

ello everyone! Last I let you all into my head we were getting ready to start the autocross season, now we are in the summer break part of the season. My 10 mm wrench left a second-degree burn on my hand: that will teach me to leave it outside for 10 whole minutes. As shocking as it may seem I still have the same car! and I have touched just about every bolt it has at least once. I have even had other Porsche club members touch them hoping their blood mixed with mine would create a DNA sequence the car would accept as the correct sacrifice. I have worked very hard to make it the perfect compromise, street, autocross, time trial car. The 944 Turbo does multitask well, but it is the hardest car to drive smoothly I have ever been in. The power comes on like a switch and the throttle is not directly connected to the motor, (i.e.) lag. It is a wonderful streetcar with AC that blows cold, handles bad roads fine and has no problems passing anything including the gas station. I now have a little more time on my hands as I am not searching for my car anymore, so I thought I would run down some of the cars I have raced with all of you. You must now set your mental clock back to 1977 (if you were not born yet good for you! keep it to yourself! and rent the movie!) I was a 10 year old boy when family went to the Drive In Movies (a place you could see a movie on a huge screen from the comfort of your car while the mosquitoes get their fill of free O+ as I lived in Pensacola, FL) to see a movie called Smokey and the Bandit, you may have heard of it. Sure there were some famous people in it, I think his name was Burt and I had a little crush on Frog, and then there was “IT” that 1977 black SE Trans Am I had more than a crush on that. So what started as a seed with Speed Racer was now blooming into a car love addiction. I joined the navy in the late 80’s and worked on cars on my off time, my first car was a 1972 Camaro, beige with a brown vinyl top and yes it was that ugly. It ran on a weekly basis and broke on a daily basis. Most notably the car had a hood scoop not because I need more room under the hood but because it back fired though the carburetor and lit the air cleaner on fire. As there are few carburetors anymore I will try to get you a visual. You are sitting at a stop light you hear a POP under the hood and the car stalls, your first instinct is to try to start the car so you turn the key the starter engages still turning, you check the gas gauge hmm still has gas?? Pump the gas a bit then you notice smoke (NOT GOOD) and bubbling paint on the hood. (Do not attempt the following, as this was when I was young and still had a bucket of luck.) You then leap from the drive’s seat (this car accounts for 98% of my total assets the other 2% would be the tools I have to work on the car) open the hood to give the fire more oxygen (BIGGER FIRE), in a moment I reacted, grabbed the radiator over flow tube and 12

vented the radiator cap, now I’m a fireman!!! New fuel line, rebuild carburetor, cut hole in hood to remove bad paint, rivet bad hood scoop on!! Sold the car, road my motorcycle for 2 years and picked up my first Trans Am not the 77 I wished for, but a black 1979 SE (SE’s were black and with gold birds and the John Player Special style pin stripes) with T-tops. I was uber cool in my little world (Still am). I Left the Navy and moved to Dallas. A Black Trans Am with T-tops in Texas is also known as Shake-n-Bake; it was traded in on my first sports car an ‘83 RX-7 GSL. I traded that car for a very rare 1977 Trans Am SE black on black, but this car had a 4 speed which was one of 1251 made. Worth quite a bit today, Burt would be so proud. Traded that for a Buick Grand National, very cool, but still had a T-top fun car. Next I went drag racing, built a 1978 Trans Am this time white with baby blue bird a 7.4 liter, sleeper if there ever was. That car was running 12 second quarter miles when I got beat by some very loud red necks in a 55 Chevy. My pride then built a 605 hp 1970 Camaro bright yellow. This car was anti sleeper, when I drove it, bricks fell out of buildings, and mothers gathered the children in storm shelters. It was SSF (scary stupid fast). I still did not own a trailer so I drove the car to work, put the slicks in the back seat and drove to the motorplex, the car ran a best of 10.98 at 124 mph, the 55 Chevy ran a not so close 11.84 at 111, pride was all better! One last red neck note, they used that car on Walker Texas Ranger, no really, it was Chuck Norris tough. With pride restored I went back to Pontiac, but this time I wanted a GTO. While driving a friend to look at a V8 Vega a glint of gold caught my eye, it was a 1970 GTO! She was running on 7 of her 8 cylinders, but the price was right and after I purchased the car the old man said “Oh I forgot to give you the wing for the back,” I smiled and sputtered home in my 1970 GTO Judge. The Judge was built to my liking after 5 months of hard work, competition yellow with tan cloth. The original engine was hurt so I replaced it with a 468 cid brute. I owned this car for longer than any other and “The Judge” was directly responsible for me meeting my wife, Alicia (it was a very good car!). While working on the Judge and many of my other projects, Mike Underwood’s 944 turbo gave me that 1977 giddy 10 year old crush on a car and after a lot of attempts and failures, I have built, with the help of my Porsche Club friends and my wife, another uber cool car. This is just a small review of happy memories, I have owned over 100 cars over the years. This is my 5th Porsche and I am very happy with it. I have noticed there are 2 kinds of Porsche drivers/people, those who keep them and those that build them. I am the latter. As a parting note, the Turbo is resting well in the garage and there is a 1970 Cougar Eliminator Clone in my front yard so I can build without selling this time. Looking forward to seeing all of you soon.

Hare and Hound Night Rally - Lesson Learned by Carey Spreen

I

am not sure when Maverick Region last put on a Hare and Hound Rally, but I know it has been a few years, so I decided to do one this year. And as a twist, based on suggestions from previous participants, I planned to run it at night. I was able to enlist the assistance of Betty and Clay Perrine, who agreed to run the “sweep” car, departing after the last participant, to help in rounding up strays and picking up markers. You may be wondering what a Hare and Hound Rally is. Also known as a Lime Run, it is basically a Road Rally (on public roads, at legal speeds, driving licensed vehicles) in which the Rallymaster (the Hare) drives a route from point A to point B, going as straight as possible, but marking any intersections at which he or she makes a decision to turn... or NOT to turn. It is the job of the entrants (the Hounds) to find the route that the Hare took. At the end of the event, the Hound whose elapsed mileage most closely matches that of the Hare wins. Speed is not a factor in an event like this; it all boils down to miles traveled. The intersections at which the Hare makes a decision are marked somehow, typically with bags of lime (hence the traditional name “Lime Run”) that are thrown down on the pavement so that they break open and spread lime on the road. To confirm the correct direction away from the intersection, another bag of lime, thrown down less than 3/10 mile from the intersection, marks the direction that the Hare took. For a night rally, broken bags of lime are not visible until you are right on top of them, and even then are easy to miss, so the idea was to use Glow Sticks to mark the intersections. I bought a few 10-inch-long Glow Sticks as a test, and found that, once lit, they glow brightly for almost 12 hours, and are visible from at least 1/10 mile away in the dark. Additionally, Clay and Betty’s

Maverick Region Rally Chair

experience with a recent Hare and Hound night rally also indicated that the Glow Stick plan should work. The night of the event, we had 5 cars show up at the meeting point, and after the drivers meeting, we left en masse on the Odometer Check leg. An odometer check allows the calculation of the difference between the Hare’s odometer reading and that of the Hounds, so that differences in odometer readings can be accounted for by mathematically adjusting everyone’s reading to the same standard. Once we all arrived at the end of the odo check leg, the Hare (that’s me) continued on to put out markers, while Clay and Betty held the entrants to give me a 15 minute head start, and then began releasing the Hounds at 5 minute intervals in order to keep them spread out. All seemed to be going well until I started receiving calls on my cell, indicating that markers were missing and the Hounds were all gathered at one particular intersection with no idea about which way to go. Not a good sign. As it turned out, the Glow Sticks were just a bit TOO easy to see in the dark. Someone apparently happened to see the Hare putting out the Glow Sticks, and decided they were just too attractive to pass up. As they were sweeping the route, Clay and Betty actually saw someone with their car mired off road and walking around with a Glow Stick as a souvenir. Hope it was worth it! Eventually, all but one Hound had to open their emergency bail-out instructions in order to make it to the end. Not the way I had hoped it would turn out, but, against all odds, everyone seems to have had a good time. At least they said so at the Ice Cream Social and Trophy Presentation, hosted by Linda and Dan Ruehs. So the take-away? Next time use markers that are not quite so portable! Thanks to all who braved the rain, the heat, and the darkness to attend Maverick Region rallies this year!

Cliff’s Ramblings by Cliff Blackshear

E

very now and then something shows up in the shop and we need Porsche to help us in getting to a correct resolution. There are times that only they can find an answer. It does not happen often, but it can happen. I was involved in one case that could only be solved by them in a reasonably timely manner. It was a check engine light issue on a 04 Boxster. Owner says that check engine light is intermittently flashing while driving. It doesn’t do it every day but it happens pretty often.

That’s Not Possible!

After a few phone conversations we are told someone is coming out to see this and lend a hand. The gentleman that came out (and I will not name factory people here ever) was amazing. He told me about writing the software for the 02 vario-cam plus application. The system that not only varies cam timing, but also valve lift. Indicated that the variable valve lift was the hardest thing he ever dealt with. Trying to get smooth engine operation when a system goes for 4mm to 9mm valve lift was quit an undertaking... now I ramble.

So we check the DME (fuel/ignition microprocessor) for fault codes. No faults recorded. I drove the car and after awhile I experienced it. Duplicated the symptom. Brought the car into the shop. Kept it running to preserve everything possible in system software and interrogated with system tester. No faults...

So anyway, he brings his own laptop to plug into the car and John takes him for a drive. He finds the root of the check engine light in minutes.

This is not supposed to ever happen per EPA mandated OBD2 requirements. OBD system is there to help keep cars running clean. Combustion process has to be very complete under all circumstances. The monitoring software is designed to be very sensitive to any minor abnormality. A flashing light is supposed to be the highest priority warning. It means that a problem has occurred that can damage catalytic converters and totally compromise not only emission output, but also the performance level should be greatly reduced. With a flashing light there is a high probability that one or more cylinders are misfiring.

In the trunk of a Boxster is a relay board on the left side behind the trim panel. Not all of the relay positions are occupied by relays. Some are open positions. When a vehicle is due for an emission/safety inspection across the pond, the technician accesses that board. They apply a 2 pronged jumper wire in one of the open relay positions. This puts the system into diagnosis mode to ensure all systems are on line and functioning in the fuel ignition world. When the pins are jumped, the check engine light flashes to indicate the DME is running a self diagnostic routine.

This 04 Boxster ran like a scalded cat. It never exhibited any uneven running problems for me. I get John Gladwill involved and discuss this with him. His ability to think out of the box is unrivaled in my world and I look to his thoughts often. We help each other out all the time and it’s kinda fun. He drives the car a few times and looks at data as I had and also came up blank. He did however, establish a way to drive the car and reproduce the event more consistently. Which happened to be “Drive it like ya stole it.” There is a surprise (If ya know John yer chuckling about now.)

So guess what? Inside the wire harness that exited that board and went straight to the DME, was an intermittent short between these two circuits. We did not find any place on the harness that showed any signs of pinching, incorrect routing, nothing. When nothing was found with the harness the DME became suspect. So we eliminated these two circuits to the DME and test drove. Over and over and over and over. Problem was eliminated. We monitored every input to the DME while driving and found everything to be absolutely spot on. Car was declared right and has not had a single problem since........

In our shop we take a lot of pride in getting things done without any help. It is important to us that we get it done correctly and then report to Porsche what we found. We are one of 20 monitoring dealers and reports flow from us all the time.

I cannot say definitively that only a factory engineer could have found that, but the information about those circuits and their purpose has never surfaced on this side of the Atlantic. In our wiring diagrams at that time, the wires and their connections were innocuous to us. They had no meaning and no explanation. I have not looked lately to see if maybe the connections have at least been given a name. Like ROW emissions or something.

Yet this car had us stumped. So I file request for technical assistance. The reply was “That cannot happen. The design of the software will not let that happen, ever! Are you positive it is the check engine light that is flashing?”

In Germany in 04 (I dunno about now,) they had an emission inspection process that was way different from ours.

Love what I do!

The Perfect Guy Trip by Bob Kuykendall AIA

L

ast June, my wife had this great idea.

She dearly wanted to take our daughter to New York this fall to see the sights, catch some Broadway shows, and even sign up for the “Sex and the City” tour. A true Cosmopolitan ladies’ weekend, drinking Cosmo’s of course. Luckily for me I said “yes, that sounds like a dream trip.” She was excited, and as I helped her book a nice NY hotel, and find the best airfares and show tickets on the internet, it dawned on me to ask “hey- this is a world class trip, so where do the guys get to go?” And then it hit me…..my son Robert and I would go to Germany and visit car museums, including the new Porsche museum at Zuffenhausen. Yes, a perfect guy’s trip - Autobahn, German cars, Porsche, and Oktoberfest. My wife agreed, that sounded like a good idea. So, we had our green light. Yes! Open Itinerary. That’s the way my son and I prefer to travel. No advance reservations, no pressure to be anywhere at any time, free to roam and stay where the staying was good. All we had to do was catch that flight back on Monday. Five days of German bliss and open road adventure. I’ve decided that planning and dreaming about a trip is almost more fun than actually being there. Let’s see, we land in Frankfurt and need an Autobahn worthy car. But at 1.6 dollars to the euro, I’ve got to go easy here. Just a cheap ride, like a VW Golf, is going to run about $500 for 4 days. No Porsche Carrera S on this trip, although Avis did have them at the airport. Luckily, I used my upgrades and at least moved us up to a Mercedes C class, a C180 Kompressor with built in navigation. This would do….our Autobahn warrior was ready. As soon as we land, we are southbound to Stuttgart. When the gray circular sign with a diagonal white stripe (no speed limit) finally appears, we are immediately hammer down, but not for more than three to four kilometers at a time due to heavy traffic. Aaargghhh- we are finally on the autobahn, but can’t go maximum speed just yet. Patience! 18

photos by Bob Kuykendall

After touring downtown Stuttgart, we go to bed early so that we would be fresh for tomorrow’s two museumsPorsche and Mercedes. I could barely sleep! As Clint Blackman reported in a previous issue of Slipstream, the new Porsche museum is world class and you can easily take the train to within 300 feet of the front door. Robert and I spent all morning there, and after about 3-1/2 hours of seeing every important 917, 962, Gmund no. 001, Carrera RS, RS Spyder, and development history of all the early cars, I told my son we needed to leave. Did I just say that? I simply couldn’t take any more, as I was mentally wiped out- too much, too great, beyond mere mortal sensory overload. You have to see this place! But don’t leave Stuttgart without seeing the Mercedes museum on the other side of town. After a quick lunch and another train ride, I was gaining my strength back. As we approach the MB museum, I am taken by the architecture. Yes, it’s the building you see on the US commercial where they crash the new E-coupe through the lobby glass. So industrial, high tech, over-engineered, and Bauhaus inspired. Yes, this is Germany all right. At the Mercedes museum, it’s all about development of the automobile over time, as each ramp takes you down thru the next decade of world history and the evolution of Daimler-Benz products. The race car display is phenomenalusing a banked track section to display all the important race cars from 300 SLR to Hamilton’s Formula 1 world championship McLaren. In fact, a simulator ride puts you in the McLaren at Monte Carlo. Wow! That evening, it’s on to Bavaria. As a respite from automotive heaven, we will spend the next day going “castleing” as we spent the night at Füssen near the Austrian border at a Zimmer Frie. The food was unexpectedly 5-star at our cheap inn. The bacon-wrapped venison was typical German cuisine. The next morning, it’s on to the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Maybe I’ll add a throne room to my house!

Bavaria to Munich, what great country roads, green meadows that look like the Sound of Music, flower balconies, and cows wearing bells. Wooden barns and the friendliest people on earth (except for Texans of course.) We enter the Autobahn west of Munich in an unrestricted section. Whooosh- a screaming black M6 goes by at what looked to be 300 kph. OMG! It takes three kilometers before we dare enter that 3rd lane. We push our little 4-banger to 230 kph (about 143 mph) and are finally able to stay up with the big boys. But, that M6 is probably already in Munich.

drinking beer since 10:00 in the morning. Just imagine a Texas State Fair and two Cowboy games letting out at the same time. And this size crowd every day for three weeks! But, we are taken by the fact that the Germans are there to have fun, not just drink, so there are no fights or drunken brawls. Just singing and chanting. Yes, I’ll have another liter of Augustiner. Prost! Our last day takes us to the BMW museum near the old Olympic grounds. Here we go again! Unbelievable architecture, world class displays, fantastic cars. The fabric Z car, my old 3.0 CS, M-class development, history of the aviation engines. It’s all here, in an underground sustainable building with a green roof. We are so far behind in the US!

Oktoberfest! Yes, it’s the last weekend and it’s Friday, so I booked a hotel in advance, which was smart. The whole downtown area is sold out. We are staying out by the airport, and the train stop is not far away. The perfect logistics for getting to/from the beer festival.

Alas…it is time to go. But we still have a few hours before our flight from Munich to London, then home. What could we do to kill a few hours? AUTOBAHN! we both say at the same time, so we head north on the A9 towards Berlin. After wringing out the C-class for all she had, we were finally done. Everyone wondered why we were laughing and smiling so much as we boarded the plane. What’s wrong with those guys?

I had no idea! We arrive at the Theresienwiese only to find about 200,000 people already there. They have been

I didn’t have the heart to tell them – after all, this was all my wife’s idea!

New Member Spotlight: Rich Wiegard by Andrea Bell

his month’s spotlight is on Rich Wiegard. Rich says he’s always been a sports car nut. After graduating from college, he had a 1994 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo and helped start the Twin Turbo Z’s of Dallas club. After that he owned several BMWs. He thought he’d stick with those for a while, until a friend told him he should drive a Porsche. Always one to love a good test drive, he didn’t think it would hurt to just drive one. That started a search all over the country for just the right car. He ended up finding his 2002 911 Turbo with X50 package with only 8,500 miles on it just 15 miles away from his Frisco home. This proud Porsche owner was already attending his first DE event at Motorsport Ranch within a month of owning his Porsche. Rich is originally from Houston, where his parents still live. He’s been mostly in the DFW area since graduating from Texas A&M in 1994. He has a sister living in Frisco about a mile away with her husband and twin children. Rich got engaged back in August with

wedding plans in Kauai in March. She’s attended two DE events with him and loves the “P-Car,” so he figured she was a good catch. He says he just needs time to convince her to trade in her VW Beetle for her own “P-Car.” Besides being a car nut and participating in DE events, he enjoys a wide variety of other activities. He played racquetball competitively in college and still plays a couple times a week. He loves to travel, see new places and try new foods. In his spare time, he enjoys playing on his Xbox 360. He enjoys entertainingfamily and friends, going to movies and landscaping. He’s been told he is pretty good in the kitchen and adds that he enjoys spending time with his fiancée who shares many of the same hobbies.

MRPCA welcomes Rich!

Happy Hour at Trinity Hall Pub by Chris Christensen

O

kay, so you say you’re tired of Mexican Food and would like to try something different? Well, at this month’s Happy Hour located at The Trinity Pub, there were an assortment of options ranging from Irish fare such as: Corned Beef and Cabbage, Bangers and Mash (Pork Sausage) – or a French Dip (not sure how that got there), burgers or a Pulled Pork BBQ or Texas BBQ or Lamb Chops. Nothing was left out and it seemed everyone was satisfied with the food. But food is not the only option on the menu – how about 157+ choices of brews, 22 Irish Whiskey’s and 22 different wines. Now if beer is a comfort food for you – and I think there are a few of us who would admit to that – then this is the Pub for you. Some of the ale’s have rather interesting names such as; Arrogant Bastard (who knew), Double-Wide – India Pale Ale (US housing in India?) and The Sixth Glass – Quadrupel Ale (we would walk home). We passed on the whiskey, to avoid negotiating the local law enforcement in our Porsche, but if you have a ride and like the Irish Mash you shouldn’t be disappointed. Somewhat concealed directly off Mockingbird Lane in Mockingbird Station – the Pub is relatively easy to find. But, parking can be a problem; the best bet is to use the parking garage while the restaurant is a short walk up a couple of flights of outdoor stairs to the front door. Seating outside is available weather of course permitting, where smoking is permissible, and plenty of seating for even large groups. This month we had a few new members join us. It’s nice to know Ed Boudreau with Robert & DebbieThompson the Maverick Region continues to grow in leaps and bounds. Madhu and Roshni Rao, the owners of a new 911S coupe joined in the festivities along with Dan Boudreau (recently purchased a 928) – so with our new members we had a little over 25 enthusiasts sharing Porsche stories at dinner. So, to diverge for a moment and talk about the new Panamera, a sports sedan that is too cool. We are sure some of you have been curious and seen one of these sedans close up- perhaps at Parade? In our view seeing a new car on the road is a telling sign of its proportions and overall attractiveness. Since its “behind” seems to be the talk of most enthusiasts – this writer is interested in seeing the back 24

end on the road along with the rest of it of course. Internal seating and other features are something akin to the seating in a high performance aircraft-only better. But of course, only time will tell if the Panamera is a success. It certainly has once again sharpened the comments of all Porschefilles, but then so did the Cayenne when it was launched. Now Porsche is scheduling a new mini-version of the Cayenne. Hopefully the new Panamera will be the kind of “Change” we can all live with. Once again we look forward to the holiday season and wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving – it is upon us again. Why does time seem to go faster the older you get? We hope to see you all at next month’s Happy Hour which will be held on December 17, 6:30pm – 9:00pm at Big Bucks Brewery and Steak House, located at 2501 Bass Pro Drive, Grapevine. As always everyone is welcome…. see you there.

Charity Autocross by James W. DePetro

irst impressions of a Minnesota guy racing a Porsche in Texas: First, the Boxster is much more responsive than a snowmobile. Second, I enjoy having the instructor sit in the seat next to me rather than behind me with his hands wrapped around my waist. Third, the Porsche will actually spin in a 360 whereas a snowmobile that spins out usually results in being buried under the snow with the sled on top of you. I have decided that the Porsche is the preferable mode of transportation. I would like to thank Michael Pelletier for inviting me to the event, allowing me to drive his silver bullet, and being my driving instructor. Michael, you provided me with a phenomenal experience and I thank you. I know that I was initially hard on your clutch, given the white smoke pouring out of the car during my spinout into the cones not to mention the rancid stench that persisted all the way home, and I appreciate that you didn’t punch me. My favorite quote in the car was when you yelled “two hands on the wheel, quit driving like a gangster.” Even today, I am cognizant of the

three and nine positions as I drive my SUV down the highway. I would like to thank the Maverick Region of the Porsche Club of America for allowing me to drive at their Charity Autocross. The members of the organization seemed to relate to each other like a family and I felt welcomed as if one of them. You provided me a professional and safe experience. Lastly, I thought y’all would like to know the song that was running through my mind throughout each of the ten laps. Check out the song “Going the Distance” by the band Cake. If you don’t, here is a little snippet: Reluctantly crouched at the starting line~Engines pumping and thumping in time~The green light flashes, the flag goes up~Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup~They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank~Fuel burning fast on an empty tank~Reckless and wild they pour thru the turns~Their prowess is potent and secretly stern. Thank you all, my bucket list’s one line shorter!

Mavs stopped at the “Famous Mineral Water Company,” home of the world famous “Crazy Water!” The name stuck when a known crazy lady became sane after drinking this famous mineral water. After a glasses of Crazy Water No. 3, we all reported we were “Rarrin to Go!” So if you find yourself near Mineral Wells, Texas stop by and have a glass of “Crazy Water”.... “you’ll be glad ya did!” Additional information about the Crazy Water Co. can be found at www.famouswater.com Additional information about Mad Maps can be found at www.madmaps.com

Porsche Palooza by Brian Shiu

I

love November. With it comes cooler weather, Thanksgiving and Porsche Palooza. This past November my very understanding wife, Maire Shannon, and I were fortunate to be able to attend Porsche Palooza for the second time. If you’ve never heard of Porsche Palooza, it’s a weekend long feast for the Porsche junkie. The annual event is based in a quaint, tourist town in northwest Arkansas called Eureka Springs. Back in the day, someone must have discovered both gold and water there and then named the place accordingly. I haven’t used my mad interweb skills to verify that though. This year, 294 people brought 173 cars to Palooza. One attendee came all the way from North Carolina and one of my best friends and his son came from Colorado. I was glad to see several others from the Maverick Region attend for the first time. Palooza has something for everyone from a car show to tech sessions to my personal favorite, the “spirited” drives. Imagine miles and miles of curves of all types – high speed sweepers, hairpins, uphill, downhill and yes, blind - that hug the topography of the Ozark Mountains. Now imagine them lacking expansion joints, potholes and all other sworn enemies of our tightly suspensioned cars. Now imagine virtually no traffic (except for the occasional deer). You getting the picture? These drives provide more fun than my limited vocabulary can effectively communicate and for a native of Dallas, where the roads are patterned after a sheet of graph paper, they are pure nirvana. Four of your five senses are on the “giddy” setting as a train of 60 or so Porsches rip through the Ozarks. They’re so much fun that I chose to forego most of the other events, instead opting for more pure driving pleasure. These roads are the kind that the good doctor had in mind when he created the first Porsche…….. and every one since then. Another personal highlight was that for the second year, we offered the use of our Carrera GT to Palooza’s organizers to benefit a local non-profit organization. The idea was to sell raffle tickets where the winner of a drawing would go 28

for, you guessed it, a spirited drive in the car and all the proceeds raised by selling tickets would go to the non-profit. The organizers chose Morning Star Wildlife Rehabilitation Center as their non-profit. Morning Star takes in injured wildlife with the goal of rehabilitating the animal to where it can be released back to its natural habitat. As it turns out, each year, a senior citizen won the raffle. Now driving the CGT is often an exercise in sheer terror even if you take it easy on the volume pedal. Having warned the winners that I have scared myself senseless more times than I care to admit, I was surprised when both of them wanted to really experience the capabilities (within my lame driving skills of course) of the CGT. I was more than happy to oblige, but when the rides were over, I’m not so sure they were. I’m happy to report that both winners are still upright today and it’s been a privilege to help out Morning Star in a small way. Most importantly, Palooza is about the people. That same phrase is repeated about every Porsche event, so why should Palooza be any different? I’ve met a lot of people at Palooza and many now go way beyond being mere acquaintances. These are genuine people who don’t care if your Porsche’s a Carrera GT or if it’s radio controlled, and don’t care if you’re an air cooler or water cooler. These are the kinds of friends that I now stay in touch with throughout the year and can share life’s victories and concerns with and are without a doubt the best part of Palooza. All too soon, the “depart for home” alarm on the iphone is chiming and it’s back to reality. Now a month later, I call on my failing memory and feel so blessed to have been able to attend Palooza. I got to spend the weekend with my aforementioned very understanding wife and great friends driving some of the best roads this great nation has to offer. How much better can it get? It can’t until I can figure out how to stuff our 3 kids into our cars and bring them along. The Good Lord willing, Porsche Palooza will be an annual pilgrimage for us. November can’t get here soon enough. I invite you to look up and see what Palooza is all about at www.pca-palooza.com.
