Board Botschaft: A New Perspective By Bill Kruder, Region President Well just when you thought you had seen it all . . . you get elected President. Let me give you a little background. I like to call myself the newest old member in the club. We joined the club in the spring of 1996; think we went to a couple things, then as we say, life gets in the way. So, for the next 20 years we didn’t go to a thing . . . nothing. Then in Spring 2015 this thing called Porsche DFW Cars and Coffee began and I was all in. Before I knew it, I became a monthly scout for the locations, and soon after that the region decided to make it a club event. Mavs & Mochas was born, and you guessed it: I was the guy. Shortly after, Jim Hirsch asked me for a favor and that led to me adding Advertising Chair to my existing Coffee Meets Chair responsibilities. It’s been a great three years. So; moral of the story? It’s never too late to get involved. That being said, here I am today, President. It might be one of the most humbling things I have ever had the privilege to undertake. Look back at who has served as President and you will quickly see there are huge shoes to fill; a legacy to maintain. With any organization you always want to leave those ahead of you in great shape. Let me tell you that our past presidents have and done it well. The club has never been so successful, and I attribute it to two things. One, what our past board has accomplished from 1962 to 2019. And two, our new members. Did you know that we average 25-30 new members a month? Think about that. We gain over 300 club members every year. That’s more members

than we had in 1982 in total. No wonder PCA National recognized the Maverick Region for Greatest Growth in Membership for 2018! So, join me in welcoming our new members and invite them out to an event. If you know an old new member who hasn’t participated in a while, encourage them to come out too as the club continues to create something for everybody. We have lots planned for 2020 and I can’t wait to see what the new year brings! Lastly if there is an idea you have, a comment to make, or an opinion to be shared, do not hesitate to contact us. We welcome it all.

MAV OF THE MONTH: Bill Orr This month we are celebrating Bill Orr. For those of you who have never met Bill in person, I assure you that you still know him very well for what he does for our club. Bill is the “wizard behind the curtain;” he serves as our Marketing, Social Media, and Calendar Chairs, not to mention the many other roles he takes on. His efforts in large part earned us the PCA National Award for Best Website in 2019. Most recently Bill was very involved, along with Debi Kruder, our Social Chair, in developing and implementing the marketing strategy behind our 2019 Founders Day and Silent Auction. In addition Bill provides us with weekly and monthly news and trivia of everything Porsche. If you want to meet Bill in person, just look for the man in the cap with the bag of Porsche Matchbox cars at our next Mav event! Thank you Bill for your invaluable contributions to our Region, Zone, and PCA. 2 January

Founders Day 2019 Evening Recap By Debi Kruder, Region Social Chair

Three Great Events in One Day came to a close with the 57th Anniversary Founders Day Celebration that took place at Porsche Grapevine Saturday evening, December 7. The newest of the four Porsche dealerships in DFW boasts a two-story venue with the latest design and features, including a classic car shop. Not only did they provide a gorgeous venue, their financial support for the evening allowed us to pull out all the stops with incredible food, open bar, and great friends! Many thanks to Porsche Grapevine General Manager Jordan Mizrach and his talented and helpful staff for making the evening such a success. Nearly 300 members began arriving as early as 6:30 pm in anticipation of the fun! Outside, many stopped to look at the beautiful showcase of eleven Porsche 914s each unique in its own way, all beautifully organized by members Clay and Betty Perrine (bringing two of their own). Inside, the event started with a greeting from Region President David Robertson, recognizing the 2018 PCA National Awards earned: PCA Region of the Year, Membership Growth 6 January

Award, Best Website, Best Newsletter in class, and Best Newsletter Cover. Then we were encouraged to eat, drink, and enjoy time with our fellow Mavericks, and that we did! It was so exciting to meet so many new members who chose this day to get to know us, and they had such amazing things to say about the hospitality they received. Can’t disagree . . . we were out driving friendships in force, whether chatting in line with our mouths watering over the best barbeque in Texas, admiring the custom-made Porsche cookies, or having a drink from

the open bar, the night was filled with laughter, conversation, and plans for next year! Many thanks to Co-Host Catering and Pecan Lodge for serving up a delicious feast of brisket, pulled pork, fried chicken, mac and cheese, and all the fixings! Add in the peach cobbler, cupcakes, and cookies, and needless to say, we were all smiling. The evening came to a close with the announcement of the James Shoffit Award, election results, and a thank you from our outgoing President. Good-bye hugs were given by many as he stepped down after three years of leading our Maverick Region into the next decade. It was a memorable evening indeed!

Our annual Silent Auction for The Huffaker-Hughes Hope House, supported by the Maverick Region Porsche Club of America, was again a huge success! This auction for the second year in a row was offered online for our 3,000+ Mavericks to have the opportunity to participate! The results were amazing: nearly $11,700 was raised on a goal of $10,000. Many thanks must be given to two groups of people. First, our donors. We have some of the most generous partners, advertisers, and members themselves who donated premium products and services! Without them, there would be no silent auction. And second, the nearly 100 participants who purchased the dozens of Porsche products, services, rare whiskeys, area gift certificates, and more! FUN AUCTION TRIVIA • Total Bids: 288 • Highest Bid Day: November 5 • Highest Bid Day Amount: $2,845 • Top Three Bidding Items: Attic Butler’s Ladder, Custom Porsche Table by Peter Wen, and the French Room Dinner and Wine Tasting • Item with the Highest Bid Amount: Expel Front End Clear Bra at $1800 • Highest Page Views in a Day: 845 The Hope House exists to eliminate domestic violence through intervention, offering shelter, counseling, support, and education to promote the healing of abusive relationships. The Maverick Region is proud to be a partner with this cause since 1993. 7

Founders Day 2019: Mavs & Mochas by Matt Wilson

The December 7th Mavs & Mochas Founders Day festivities began with the first of three events at the NorthPark Mall Nordstrom location. This venue is popular with generous parking availability, its central Dallas location, and hot coffee available just inside. The weather was sunny and mild making the event much more enjoyable for the approx. 200 Porsche enthusiasts in attendance. Row after row of the Nordstrom lot was lined with cars participating in the People’s Choice car show, as well as over a dozen 914s. As seems to be the case with most Maverick events, it pays to show up early. By the official start time of our event at 8:30, our reserved lot was almost completely full!

beautiful white 997 GT2. This is a very rare car with less than 200 brought to North America in 2008-2009. Since I’m most familiar with the 997 generation of 911s, I can appreciate the uniqueness of this car as I chatted with the owner (Mark) about his car at length. He had owned the car for only a few months and was enjoying it immensely. What a find! One of the other nice things about these events is meeting people who are attending an event for the first time, as was the case for Michael. He just bought a beautiful guards red 996 GT3 and was asking about specifics on oil changes. I explained the various event types and ways to connect with other members. Based on his smile and

Some unique things about our Mavs & Mochas events are not only the camaraderie between Porsche owners, but the variety of models and generations represented in the club. You will see anything from air-cooled to water-cooled, rear-engine to mid-engine, and from vintage to current models on show. It seems each time I attend, a new or unique car that I have never seen before arrives; and this time it was a 8 January

enjoyment of sharing with other Porsche lovers - I’d say we will see him at future Mavs & Mochas events!

Founders Day 2019: People’s Choice Car Show by Scott Kellogg, Concours Chair Saturday was another fun and exciting day for a Mavs & Mochas car show! Thank you to all the participants for taking part and supporting the club’s charity Hope House. We had more than 200 cars present and 70 in the show. One of the highlights was the feature model, the Porsche 914. It was so nice seeing all these vehicles lined up together. As the day went on, we had a large number of people looking at the cars, sharing stories, and just having a great time. Not to mention shopping in Nordstroms, and enjoying a nice espresso. And now the moment you have all been waiting for, the winners! The top ten cars chosen by the people are: Kenny Thaher’s 2016 Cayman Greg Kleath’s 1981 911 Jeff Klaumann’s 1977 911 Michael Harling’s 1958 356 Richard Konkel’s 2018 911 Michael Beveridge’s 2005 911

Jason Burke’s 2019 Cayman Clay Perrine’s 1974 914 Roberto Anderson’s 1963 356 Steve Wayne’s 1988 911 And of course, the President’s Choice, Jim Mango’s 1972 911S affectionately known as Kermit. Thank you again to everyone who participated! You all made it a great time for everyone. 9

tree. Keeping a long line of the cars together through all the lights is obviously impossible, but bystanders were no doubt treated to a distinctive visual and aural experience! But “the topper on the tree” is seeing the cars entering the driveway of the Plano Police Department to drop off the toys. Once there, Plano officers met the drivers with a smile and helping hand, finally posing with the entire

While the police association places collection boxes at local businesses around Plano, the Mavs do things a little differently. A large group of Mavs made their contribution by loading their Porsches with new, unwrapped toys to be delivered to the Plano Police Department via a 9.5-mile route starting near Park Blvd. and the Dallas North Tollway. The weather was perfect, with sunshine and cool temps. As with any event involving upwards of 80 Porsches, just hearing the low rumble of the idling cars at the staging area is quite a sensation. The Christmas Convoy was led by “Hagestad,”the 356 owned by Bill and Debi Kruder, and adorned on this occasion with a fresh Christmas

group for a photo opp. As in the past, our Maverick members were very generous to this worthy cause. Our donations totaled over 600 toys and cases of diapers, with an additional $1,380 in gift cards. This was only one of three major events that Mavs participated in on Founders Day, and without a doubt it was a popular one. Footnote: I met two different first-time attendees at the Nordstrom’s Peoples Choice Car Show earlier that day, both of whom said it was their first event and certainly not their last. It’s not just about the cars; it’s about the people.

2020 Maverick Region Executive Board Results by Carey Spreen, Vice President Traditionally, the anniversary of Maverick Region’s creation in PCA is celebrated on what we call Founders’ Day, which recognizes the charter members who founded our region back in November of 1962. The year 2019 marks 57 years of the continuing vitality of Maverick Region. Two of the traditions that take place each year at Founders’ Day are the Executive Board elections and the announcement of the James

Shoffit Maverick of the Year, which replaced the Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award in 2017. Board Elections All members of Maverick Region, either primary or affiliate, are eligible to vote for our four elected officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Ballots are printed in Slipstream and are also available at the FoundersDay banquet. This year’s balloting resulted in

the following officers for 2020: • President Bill Kruder • Vice President Carey Spreen • Treasurer Chris Flaugh • Secretary Jennifer Parma Thanks to all who voted! As a member of the 2020 Board, I invite you to visit any Maverick Region events in 2020, whether it is a competitive event, a tour, or a strictly social event – we’re a friendly group, no matter what type of event you attend.

MAVERICK OF THE YEAR: Craig Janssen Back in 1976, Maverick Region began presenting the Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award, with the recipient chosen by the Region President. This award recognized singular outstanding performance and service to the Region. In 2017, the Selcer Award was retired and replaced by the James Shoffit Maverick of the Year award, which carries on the tradition of the Selcer Award. The 2019 Maverick of the Year award, after much deliberation by outgoing Region President David Robertson, went to our Drivers’ Education series Chief Driving Instructor, Craig Janssen. Craig has made huge strides this year to improve and update our DE coaching program, and we greatly appreciate his continuing efforts to make the Maverick Region DE program one of the best in PCA. Congratulations Craig – well deserved!

Autocross Series: Event 10, Lone Star Park by Mark Schnoerr, Region Autocross Chair

photos by Robert Kirby of Lightspeed Images

Event 10, the final Autocross event for 2019, was also the Guns and Hoses Charity fund raiser. Maverick Region PCA donated $1000 to the efforts, and between onsite donors, the Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club, and 100% donations from all awards payout winners, the group raised a record $6,000 for this important Police and Fire Fighters organization. Police and Fire Fighters from Garland, Mesquite, and Grand Prairie competed in patrol cars and Tahoes for 2019 bragging rights in classes mixed into the normal running of the event. Porsche class winners included Igor Tulandin defending top SUV time in his Cayenne GTS in class P0, while Betty Perrine took class P1 in her 400,000+

mile 914. Amir El-Baghdady took class P2 but has a new competitor coming for him in 2020: Jeff Duncan. Mas Watanabe and Carey Spreen, driving his Boxster S this time, fought it out in P3, with Mas taking the win. Alec Baker and Bill Little were close all day in P4, with Alec taking the win in his Cayman S. In class P5, the big dogs, Owen Coulman was first in his GT3, followed by Greg Samson in his 911S, and Holli Coulman in her Turbo. And speaking of Big Dogs, Clay Perrine brought his awesome 914/6 GT 4.0 back and he is starting to get his arms around all that torque. Wait until next year! Performance index-adjusted Porsche results were Owen, Mas, and Carey, in that order.

Maverick Marktpreis: 911 Generation 997.2 by Peter Wen Can a 10-year old car be considered a classic? Well yes, in the case of 997.2 gen 911, it’s a modern classic! These 997 mid-cycle refreshed Porsches were produced from ’09-’12. With the most senior members of this generation barely a decade old, it’s too early to speculate how Porschephiles will judge it in the future. However, market data looks promising so far. Here is why you should pay attention. Price: Surprise! The 997.2 is near or is already at the bottom of its depreciation curve. Over the last 3 years, pricing has definitely stabilized. Very encouraging news for this young generation. Performance: A modern Porsche must have its share of the technological alphabet soup: PASM, PSM, PTV, PTM, PDK, PCCB, VTG, and PSE. The 997.2 has them covered.

With the Sport Chrono Package and Sports Exhaust, even a base Carrera can pull 0-60 mph in the mid-4-second range! Look & Feel: The Goldilocks of Modern Porsches. It’s neither too big nor too small. Its feedback-rich hydraulic power steering feels just right. Better yet, it still looks like a classic 911 - simply beautiful. Variants: There are 23 different 911 variants! There is a perfect 997.2 for every driver. Scarcity: Launched at the height of the financial crisis, there are significantly fewer 911s produced for this generation than each of the four prior generations. Want something even more rare? Try to find a Sport Classic or a Speedster, only 50 and 356 units of each produced, respectively.

Coffee, Cars & Conversation by Bill Kruder Well, yet another one that took a while to put all the pieces together. It started about 2-3 years ago while enjoying a Saturday morning at Mayo’s. This guy walks up to me with his red Porsche hat, smoking his pipe, and starts talking about the club to me. Then we fast forward to the 70th Anniversary event at Park Place, where he represented 1970 with his car (we had one year model, each, from 1967 to 2019) and we manage to chat a bit more. Now it’s this fall and Park Place calls, looking for an “old” 911 that would be a great compare and contrast at the launch of the 992 at the Four Seasons. Well you guessed it. His 1970 911E gets the call, he shows up, and that evening I think there was more interest in his car than the new one!

photos provided by author BK: So how did you end up in Dallas? JH: I was going to get my Masters and I had been accepted at SMU. I remember it well; it was January 2 of ‘67. I get off the plane with all my winter gear on, to the delight of bright sunny day; let’s just say the rest is history. Fun fact: later that month Chicago had the record setting storm that dropped nearly two feet of snow. I still think I made the right choice (smiling)!

So here is the next in my John Halla and his 1970 911E series of “conversations” I BK: Tell me a little about your career? would like to share with you . . . JH: Well, after graduating from SMU, I was hired by Texas Instruments and John Halla, Member since 1973, worked there for 13 years, 1969Owner 1970 911E and 1989 944 Turbo 1982. After TI, I was out of a job for Bill Kruder: So I know you are not about six months before a company originally from here; where again? hired me to sell back into TI. I did John Halla: I am originally from that until 1991. Later, I went on to the Chicago area, specifically the work for Unitron LP, in Technical northern suburbs. Born in Chicago, Sales, and retired in 2016. then we moved to Skokie, about 45 BK: So what was your first car? minutes northwest, before settling in JH: That would have been a 1953 Evanston. That’s about 50 minutes Buick convertible. Thing was, my dad north along the lakeshore, where was a car salesman - he had his own we Iived until I went to college, store in Evanston - and about every downstate. six months he took my car to sell, and BK: Where did you go to college? gave me a different one to drive. JH: I went to the University of Illinois. My first two years were at the Chicago campus, BK: Tell me about you dad’s car business? which at the time, was out on Navy Pier; JH: Well, dad sold Packards and this was before they built the big UIC Buicks before WWII. After the war, campus they have today. After my two it was very difficult to buy a new car, years, I transferred to U of I Champaign, so he started selling used cars, as this graduating with an engineering degree. was where the business was. 20 January

BK: So tell me how you got interested in Porsches? JH: That would be 1971. I was living in Austin and there was this home stereo shop that some audiophiles liked to go hang out at on Saturday mornings. The owner had this pretty Alfa Romeo. I was driving a Cadillac Sedan Deville and then he bought a 911T. We became friends and he decided to take a trip to Chicago in the 911, and we shared driving duties. You can say that was all it took to figure out I didn’t need that big Caddy (laughing). BK: So when did you get your first? JH: That was 1973. I had moved back to Dallas, and Economy VW on Lemmon Ave. had this blue Targa for sale. I went to take a look at it and it was ok, but the salesman said you really need to come back and take a look at this other car that is coming up for sale. So I did, and there sat this 1970 911E. As luck would have it, the owner wanted to sell it, as he was being transferred to Anchorage, Alaska. This owner was a cargo pilot; he bought the car in Germany, personally loaded and strapped the car in his plane, and flew it home to Texas. Another fun fact about the car is that only three people had ever driven it: the original owner, his wife, and the mechanic. So it was a oneowner 911, with 12,400 miles on it. BK: How did you become a member of the club? JH: After I bought the car I realized I didn’t know another soul who owned one. Then one day I was washing the car in the driveway and this 911 Targa pulls up and the guy says “. . . you going to this weekend’s Autocross?” That guy was Maverick member Steve Fallon. Again, as we say, the rest is history; that was fall of 1973.

BK: And join the club you did! Tell me about some of it? JH: Well, when I first joined in 1973, Barry Gibbs was our Region President; Barry, his wife Joan, and I became good friends. In 1977 I became Region President (with 172 members at the time), and the following year I received the Selcer Award (today this is the James Shoffit Award). Then in 1979, I was the Tours Chair. I contributed to Slipstream with a monthly column, “Notes from the Garage Wall,” from 1993-95. Lastly in 2002, I was the Region Tech Chair. Back in those days the club was all about driving events, so I attended as many as I could. I think I have driven on about a dozen tracks here in Texas and some out of state during Parades. BK: Tell me about some of the Parades you have attended? JH: The first was in 1977 out in San Diego. I have attended 16 Parades, the last being in 2011.

BK: You not only went but you participated, and did some winning? JH: I did, back in 1978. I took 4th in class in the Aspen Parade Autocross, which that year was run on a racetrack. At the DFW Parade in 1987, I got 6th Place in class in the Tech Quiz, and the next year at Pike’s Peak, took 5th Place in class, again in the Tech Quiz. Then in 1997 the 911E took 1st Place in the Concours, 5th Place in the Autocross, and I won 1st Place in the Tech Quiz. In 1998, the 944 Turbo took 1st Place in class in the Concours, along with a 1st Place in the Men’s Turbocharged Modified class in the Michelin Slalom Challenge.

Every month as I write these interviews I think the same thing: what if? What if I had not run into this guy at Mayo’s; what if I had not had the chance to invite him to show his car at Park Place for the 992 launch? So if and when you meet someone new, don’t miss out on “Driving Friendships!” John Halla and Ferry Porsche at the 22nd Porsche Parade in San Diego, 1977

BK: And I hear you have taken a few factory trips? JH: That I have. My first was in 1976; it was part of the Treffen program and was also the launch of the 924. Went back in 1993 when they were doing testing on the Tiptronic, in the 993. I got to ride a few laps with a factory engineer/ driver. Then in 2011 went back to see the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen.

Twenty Years of Maverick Club Racing by Wendy Shoffit Maverick Region held its very first Club Race ever back in 1999 at the Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, OK. At the time it was one of the only tracks close enough to our region to have an event. Boy, have the past twenty years changed things! We now have two full tracks in the north Texas area and several more within the five-hour driving time to Hallett.

While we normally have a Club Race and Drivers’ Education event together, this year had to be a bit different. The Club Race was at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, TX, while, on the same weekend, the DE was at the newly repaved and renovated Eagles Canyon Raceway in Slidell, TX. Now, I could go into all the details of WHY it was that way, but I won’t bore you with all that. Suffice it to say it was the best decision the CR and DE event chairs could make for future planning. Did the smaller crowd deter us from having a great time? Of course it didn’t! One nice thing about it is that the schedule was much more relaxed with later start times (hooray for sleep) and earlier finishing times to allow folks to drive back home on Sunday. Smaller crowds meant more elbow room at mealtimes and more donuts for pastry enthusiasts. The 42 racers who came had a great time. Our race included the “Republic of Texas 944 Shootout” with one run group entirely dedicated to the SP1 (Spec 944) racers, which they rarely get. Talk about a bunch of enthusiasts! Those guys have serious spirit and enjoyed not only the racing but fabulous trophies and loads of door prizes thanks to awesome sponsors and hardworking event organizers led by Steve Coomes. No one went home empty handed! Racing and excitement weren’t just limited to the 944 guys. We had a great group of Spec Boxsters in 26 January

provided by Wendy Shoffit and David Hodges heated competition. Add to them a couple of other 996s, Caymans, 911s, a 914, and a Cup Car. Everyone enjoyed great track conditions and fun competition. Everyone also enjoyed a delicious barbeque dinner on Saturday night at the awards ceremony. Ample brisket and sides were provided by a local favorite, BBQ on the Brazos. I can tell you no one left there hungry! Many thanks also go to the sponsors for providing terrific door prizes for racers. Their generosity year after year is staggering. While locations and racers have certainly changed over the last 20 years, one thing has remained constant. Volunteerism in Maverick Region has always been amazingly strong. This year,

Top: 944 Shootout champion Mitch Butaud with some racer buddies Bottom left to right: New Club Race co-chairs David Hodges and David McBee flanked by outgoing co-chairs Pat Heptig and Joel Nannis. Rafael Serralta’s purple 964

long-time volunteer Joel Nannis, as well as Pat Heptig, decided to pass their co-chair positions on to a new set of chairs. David McBee and David Hodges were thankful to have had the opportunity to learn how much work these guys have put in year after year. They honored Pat for his recent years of service and Joel for his who-knows-howmany-years of service in the Club Race arena. Best of luck to the Davids next year as we head to Eagles Canyon! We hope to see many more racers in 2020, even though it will mean less sleep for us volunteers. We could not do this without the dedicated volunteers year after year, both locally and nationally. Don’t let the lack of sleep deter you from volunteering. I’ve done it for 20 years now and enjoy myself every year. It’s amazing seeing the excited, smiling faces knowing you’ve helped them get there. Happy 20th Anniversary to the Maverick Region Club Race!

APEX Tech Session Recap by Michael Baynton, Region Tech Session Chair

The morning of November 16 turned out to be rainy, windy, and more than a little chilly. All in all, not a good day to be outside. But ironically it provided a relevant backdrop for the tech session at Apex Automotive in Addison.

services, graciously provided by Daniel and his staff at APEX. All in all, the weather deterred only a few folks from coming out, and those that attended had a great time and walked away with a wealth of knowledge (and some cool stuff).

Primary topics that morning centered on PPF (paint protection film), ceramic coatings, proper wash techniques, and other means of keeping Porsche exteriors and interiors safe from the environment. Daniel Coyle, owner of APEX, gave a very in-depth yet easy-to-wrap-one’s-head-around presentation that clearly explained the differences between the various products and the protections they provide (or don’t provide). Also discussed was paint correction and how that service relates to the other products. It served to highlight the complexity of modern paints and the various products and services designed to protect our vehicles from the environment. After a comprehensive Q&A session, the group moved into another section of the APEX facility to learn about the custom fabrication and performance

Suspension set-ups for street or track, engine enhancements, and exhaust fabrication are a few of their offerings in the “make it faster” section of the catalog. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. The end of the nearly two-hour session brought a raffle of many valuable certificates for goods and 30 January

The winner this month is Gary Wielgoszinski, getting 4 of the 5 questions correct. We had a few others also only getting 4 correct. It seems that questions #1 & #2 gave a lot of folks a hard time. Question 1 was pretty straightforward, but 2 was a bit trickier. In 1963 you could buy a Production 904 Carrera GTS IF you had the money; and it was the same in 1966 with a 906 Carrera 6, according to my 1967 sales brochure.

Porsche Toys by Mike O’Hare

I just can’t help it (well maybe I can, I just don’t want to) – I’m fascinated with model cars. My mother always said “Michael – you’re just a big kid,” which are the same words echoed today by my wife and children! My collection includes a concentration of Indy and Formula 1 race cars, and of course Porsches! Most of the models have a memorable connection of a sort, whether it be a favorite driver, race team I follow(ed), perhaps a race I attended, a car I owned or aspired to own, or just because . . . because I think the car looks incredibly cool! Here is a small glimpse at some of my favorite Porsche machines across different racing series:

Oversteer: Letter from the Editor by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Quite a bit of 914 content to start off the new year. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the introduction of a mid-engine Porsche in collaboration with Volkswagon. The 914 was created to bring younger buyers into the Porsche brand. It was successful with a little more than 118,000 sold from 1969 to 1975. Most of these were imported to the US and in 1970 the 914 won “Import Car of the Year” here. The base car used a VW designed 1.7 liter four-cylinder which propelled the car to 60 in about 13 seconds. Porsche also sold a version of the 914 named the 914/6 that used the 2.0 liter boxer engine from the 911T, that reduced that time to just under 9 seconds. But speed isn’t everything, the mid-engine car has great balance and driving characteristics which are prized to this day. However boys being boys, the factory shoved the 8 cylinder 3 liter boxer engine from the 908 race car into two very special 914S models. The first of which was given to Ferdinand Piëch, head of development at that time. The second was presented to none other than Ferry Porsche to celebrate his 60th birthday. Not a bad gift for the man that has everything. The 914 achieved many racing wins during its production run, the most notable might have been it’s 1, 2, 3 finish in the 1970 Marathon de la Route held at the Nürburgring.

Another big achievement was the 914/6 GT from Team Sonauto winning the GT class at 1970 Le Mans. Something you might not know even if you have a keen appreciation for the car, eleven 914’s were prepared with six-cylinder engines from what were then the most powerful 911 models, the 911 S and Carrera 911 RS. Sadly the 916, as they were called, never made it to production. History lesson over. There will not be a quiz. I think of the 914 as an early cousin to the Boxster/Cayman. I know I’m not the only one to draw that comparison, in fact a 2018 article by Rob Sass noted: The 986 Boxster is today’s 914. We have not-so-scientific proof: According to the Mart section of the September 1997 issue of Porsche Panorama, the price of a great then 20-year-old 914 was about $4,000 to $5,000. Adjusted for inflation, that figure becomes about $8,000 in 2018 money. Coincidentally, eight grand or so is about what a nice early Boxster will set you back today. Today we can only laugh about a nice $8,000 Porsche, but the 914 has only increased in value since then. On average it has also outpaced the 986 in the current world of Porsche inflation. There is good news though, the increase has slowed lately. So...buy a 914 and Enjoy the Drive.
