Prez Says by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President

T

he Memorial Day Weekend Club Race was a magnificent success! This year’s race went even smoother than last year’s, and everyone I spoke to attested to what a great event it was.

In the mean time, come on out to an event! We have an autocross, a time trial, a happy hour at Mondo’s in Addison, and three Porsche lunches in July. In addition to our Porsche lunches in Addison on the July 30th and in Plano on July 16th, we will also continue our new habit of having a lunch in Bedford on July 16th. It will again be at the Good Eats on the Southeast corner of Bedford Road and 183, starting at 11:30 or so. Please RSVP to me at james@shoffit.com if you plan to attend the Bedford lunch. We had two new members (Brant and Byron Fry) as well as Mark Gluck and Steve Kent show up for the last one. We had a great time, but had plenty of room for others!

This was my first time to drive Texas Motor Speedway in a DE. I cannot begin to describe what a thrill it was! Three days of track time meant that I could learn at my own pace (slow) and gradually build up speed over the weekend. The Porsche Store, our premier sponsor, as well as the many other sponsors (see page 17 for list) gave us excellent support in every facet of the event.

So, come on out, and join the fun!

. . . could learn at my own pace (slow) . . .

Which brings me to the next topic – Parade 2004. Since Maverick Region is hosting Parade in 2004, we are going to need even more volunteers than we had for the TMS Club Race! It will be a monumental effort that we have already started organizing. It will take us the full two years to get ready for it, so please start thinking about ways you might like to help. We will be making more specific requests as we figure out exactly how things will work, and will inform you of our progress every step of the way.

But the real story of the event was the people – not just the organizers, but the dozens of volunteers that stepped forward and helped us out. We were overjoyed to see how many people pitched in, and truly appreciated all their effort. This contributed greatly to the overall success of the event.

Because I Said So by Wendy Shoffit, Editor

I

’m speechless...Well, okay...maybe not completely speechless (as hell has yet to freeze over)! I have so many wonderful articles sitting on my desk that I cannot possibly fit them all in to this month’s issue. I am so grateful to have all of you thinking about writing articles (and doing so) without any prompting from me. I wish I could double this issue to include everything, but unfortunately that’s not in the budget. So, if you’ve written something for me and don’t see it in this issue, don’t despair. I solemnly promise to get them in within the next few months! As for the rest of you budding columnists, don’t let this discourage you from putting your thoughts down on paper. The fall and winter months sometimes get a bit on the lean side and I don’t want to longingly remember the “good ole days.” Keep them coming and thanks so much! Now for some exciting news...we’ve been talking about it all year and it’s finally here. Late this month we will be leaving for the Porsche Parade in Boise. There are nearly 30 Maverick Region members attending, most of whom will be driving. As always, Parade promises to be a spectacular event. While in Boise, we will be officially presenting our Parade 2004 bid and proposal. We’ve already had several meetings regarding the ‘04 event and things are humming right along. If you want to get involved, contact me and I’ll help you get to the right person. In the meantime, for those of us trekking to Boise, Taxi Breithaupt has come up with a suggestion on how we can do our very own salute to Idaho. She

has suggested we all make “potato hats.” We’ve mentioned it before, but now she has a concrete photo of what one can look like (see right). Just how does she come up with this stuff? Good luck to all the Mavericks attending Parade. I hope we will all end up with a plethora of trophies to show how great our region is!

he meeting was called to order just after 7:00 PM.

First piece of business a motion was passed to purchase more inventory for the Goodie Store. Sales have been good and need to replace what’s been sold. Next, Dennis Chamberlin discussed the rotation of Happy Hour location as well as other factors influencing Happy Hour. He also shared some membership demographics based on where everyone lives. Joe McGlohen put forth a recommendation for the Maverick Region to purchase additional radios as well as compatible headsets. A motion was passed to purchase 5 radios and 10 headsets. After much discussion, a motion was passed to extend use of the Internet PayPal to other venues. The goal is to offer the service to anyone that wishes to pay for events using PayPal and the club would only charge additional fees to cover the cost of the service. As always, members may continue to pay for events by cash or check. 8

Jimmy Carter and Eric Erz reported on their multi-region concours meeting in Austin and plans are in the works for a Zone 5 Concours to be held October 19 in Austin and sponsored by Hill Country Region. Teri Davis updated us on the plans for the Maverick Region summer retreat. The location will be “The Cliffs” on Possum Kingdom Lake the weekend of August 23,24,25. For information or room reservations contact Teri. Meeting closed at 8:40 PM. Remember to check the Maverick website for the most current news and event schedules.

Maverick Region PCA Board Meetings are held once a month. The meetings are open to all PCA members and your suggestions and opinions are welcome. And there’s free food!

Happy Hour At Ciudad By Stacy Waters

F

or me, one of the highlights of this month’s Happy Hour came in the form of a single statement made by Mark Gluck. Carrying on small talk as one does at the beginning of Happy Hour, I asked Mark why Ciudad was selected for this month’s event. Mark said Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Dee Lersch, and Mark Gluck the idea was to create a giant smiley face pattern across the DFW Metroplex. Okay – good enough. I like a person with a different sense of humor and therefore Mark and I get along pretty well.

This initial exchange set the tone for the evening. I met more unique personalities on this one outing than in all of my Happy Hours combined – and it proved to be one of the most exciting events I have attended. The crowd (about 30 large) was a great mix of all types and the bar staff was almost too generous with their pour. Do you think that might have had a little something to do with the fun factor?

The July Happy Hour will be at Mondo’s, one block north of the Galleria. I plan to be there for sure. By the way, that is the left eye of the smiley face!

Being a “newbie” to the club, I feel more and more welcome with each event. My husband insisted that I attend the first Happy Hour with him a few months ago. I really dreaded it. I mean, how in the world could I spend a night talking about Porsches? I just learned how to properly pronounce the vehicle’s name for goodness sake! But the most pleasant thing happened on the first Happy Hour night. I made several new friends and there was no pressure to name every Porsche model. More importantly, I was spending time with genuinely friendly people with a variety of interesting stories and Porsche advice. From then on, I have not missed a Happy Hour. If you haven’t been to one, I encourage you to do so. It’s quite simply one of the best ways to become familiar and comfortable with MRPCA. You can

Pecan Pie, Danny, Big Bucks & Roads of East Texas By Bob Bianconi

O

nce again Tourmeister Ted Glover and wife Bonnie have served the region well. Ted and Bonnie hosted a two-day tour through the back roads of East Texas with a short excursion into Louisiana. The tour started bright and early Saturday morning, May 18th. This is our third tour with Maverick and we were looking forward to seeing parts of Texas we would most likely never have found on our own. We were not to be disappointed.

promptly at 8 AM and we were treated to lush green fields, tall trees and hardly a car in sight except for the line of Porsches stretching out in front. How does Ted find these roads, we kept asking ourselves. All too quick it was lunch time and we were pulling into Nacogdoches and the Clear Springs Restaurant. At lunch, it some how slipped that Jo-Ann and I have been in Texas almost 3 years and I haven’t yet had chicken-fried steak or Pecan Pie. This nasty slip would later come back to haunt me.

. . . would later come back to haunt me . . .

Following a group photo at the train station, we were back in our cars heading towards Louisiana. Jo-Ann wanted to know if we were heading towards a Shreveport casino to which we all kept telling her no! So from that point on, every stop had to include a gas station with a Lotto machine for her chance at the big bucks. Into Louisiana we went, stopping for gas way out in the boonies. While we were stopped, Brian in the yellow Boxster whips out the windex and proceeds to wipe down his car (well, ok, just the front). I guess he wants to keep it REALLY clean; hmmmm, maybe a future concours chairman?

Twelve cars showed up for the tour. Leading the pack was Ted in his turbo carrera followed by a pair of 944’s driven by Doug Macall and Jay Easley. There was a 928 piloted by Jim Mayzurk. The 928, I believe, was voted the best sounding car on the tour – nothing like the low growl of a V-8. There were three 911’s (excluding Ted’s): Arnold and Jessie Stout, Andy Miller, and Chris Smith and her son Craig. Andy was driving a brand new C4 Cab; not to be out done, Leon Frenkel was also driving his new car – a spanking new 911 turbo. Rounding out the pack were three of the best Porsches (ok, I’m severely biased, so shoot me); a silver “S” driven by Jim and Margie Chadwick, a pastel yellow Boxster driven by Brian “I have the cleanest car” Guitard and wife Terrie; and my own Boxster. Caboose on the Porsche train was Webmaster, Mike Oakes, in his BMW M3 roadster. Spectacular roads and scenery were complimented by spectacular weather. It was 72 degrees and sunny. We headed east

In front of the train station. As we were taking our break, a young Louisianan stopped by in his pickup truck and was admiring our cars. He said that he had a bunch of Porsches at home. We all thought, yeah right; remember this was way, way out in the middle of nowhere. Well no sooner did the young fellow, Danny, leave, when he returns driving an arctic silver 996. Needless to say, we all had a good laugh. Never know where you’re gonna find them thar porches.

Next up was Natchitoches, La. a quaint little town along the Cane River. Talk about picturesque. If you haven’t been there, put it on your “to do” list. Lots of shops and restaurants and a nice riverfront. And as they say, getting there is half the fun…

What a motley crew. 10

The hills were nice.

By late afternoon the crowd was getting hungry so it was off to the Mariner’s restaurant just outside Natchitoches (pronounced nak-a-tish). It was right on the water and seemed like the perfect end to a great day of driving with new friends. We

Sunday we were back on the road for more scenic roads, twisties and rolling hills. We drove though parts of Davey Crockett National Forrest and then finished out the tour with lunch in Palestine. From there it was back through Athens and home. All in all, it was a great weekend. Thanks, Ted and Bonnie.

were all full after our meal (at least I was) when a mysterious piece of pecan pie showed up in front of me. Well, I have to say that, yes indeed, it was good. Thanks to all at the ‘other table’ who made sure I tried something new. I was worried the rest of the weekend that a chicken fried steak might show up; but luckily we’ll put that one off until the fall tour… It was an hour’s drive back to the Texas side and Nacogdoches and we were all pretty much beat from the day’s drive.

Brian washing his car AGAIN!

Bob Biancon’s first pecan pie...looks delicious!

IN MEMORY OF

Hollis “Whit” Whittenberg July 7, 1918 - June 1, 2002 God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you And whispered, “come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you pass away. And though we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands were put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Our prayers go out to the Ussery family for strength and comfort as they mourn the loss of Fran’s father.

I mean Astros Field... crossed with the Talladega Speedway. Everything was so new and shiny! The bleachers for 250,000 of your closest friends; the Speedway Club restaurant with valet parking and a view of the track; the condos and luxury skyboxes; the heliport that will accommodate 50 or so helicopters! The magnitude and the opulence of the place were amazing!”

What do you get when you mix 60 Club Racers, 60 Drivers’ Education participants, 15 concours cars, over 60 volunteers, and great sponsors? Just about the best club race EVER!

The concours cars at attention and available for inspection! Missing the chicane was an automatic black flag and a stop and go penalty. The drivers tested the limits of the chicane during the first couple of practice sessions and there were numerous black flags. During the races however there were only one or two stop and go penalties. Race starts were done on the infield straight, thus alleviating the congestion into the chicane on the race starts. The flagging crews were very accommodating and this worked very well.”

The weather on Saturday and Sunday couldn’t have been better. The DE sessions went very smoothly as well as the Club Race practices, qualifying sessions, and races (fun and sprint). There were a few minor driving incidents all weekend, including one regarding the chicane, but none were very serious. (Of course, that is from an event organizer’s standpoint…I’m sure the drivers weren’t very happy about it!) On Sunday, not only was there racing to watch, but concours chairman Jimmy Carter held a casual concours event out at the track. There were 15+ cars on display. After the sprint race was

The new start location was great for the drivers . . . but required a little balance. The gates opened at TMS late Friday afternoon, allowing for early registration, a chalk talk session, and the orientation meeting. Registration and tech seemed to go smoothly and most people seemed to appreciate a good beginning. The drivers who attended the chalk talk were treated to an in-car video presentation of the track and were happy they were there. All 5 (yes, there were only 5) rookie drivers who were supposed to be there participated in the orientation meeting, so no one needed a hand slapping.

. . . not even a single close call. Amazing . . . finished, 6-8 race cars even joined the show and shine event. A group of young boys from one of our sponsors, Enviroshine, worked diligently to make those race cars shine (for that event and all weekend)! It was quite a site to see. Maverick Member, Karen Erz, created beautiful plaques for the concours winners.

The driving festivities got underway a little late on Saturday morning, May 24th. The racers were divided into two groups, the “Smiley Faces” and the “Stars” while the DE’ers were the “Frogs” and the “Chili Peppers.” Who else but the Mavericks would think of such names? The 25 minute sessions were shortened a small amount on Saturday to make up for the lost time in the morning. There were bound to be a few small “hiccups,” most of which were invisible to everyone else. We were relieved!

Even the chicane, which was a sore spot from last year’s race, was improved. As John Crosby writes, “The infamous chicane from last year was replaced with three bundles of tires which resembled a big slalom. It was still one car at a time, but the last tire stack was offset about 25’, thereby opening up the exit. Pylons were stacked in front and on the sides to make the chicane more visible. It was aligned so that cars had an escape route on either side if they came in too hot. It allowed entry speeds of about 60 mph with a gradually accelerating exit. There was only one minor incident caused by the chicane when the tire bundle was side swiped.

Sunday evening’s dinner at the track was absolutely delicious, despite warmer than usual temperatures in the infield café. We had been battling the broken air conditioner all weekend and it was unfortunate the track staff couldn’t get it working for the awards

dinner. In spite of the heat, everyone seemed to have a very good time. In addition to announcing the class winners, several special awards were presented that night:

Worker Choice Enduro Awards: Jim Buckley (Stars) William Lloyd (Smiley Faces)

Best Prepared Car – David Gross Best Rookie – Scott Orr Best Novice- Wally Ruiz Best Braking – Glen Gatlin Northstar Motorsports Award – Wally Ruiz Worker Choice – Richard Wilkenfeld (Smiley Faces) Glen Gatlin (Stars) The only bad weather we had was on Monday when rain loomed in the distance and finally fell at lunchtime and continued into the afternoon, during the scheduled enduro race. About the race, John Crosby wrote, “The enduro groups were already quite small and with a number of drivers indicating that they were not planning to race in the rain, the enduro groups were combined. This was discussed at the driver’s meeting and there were no objections. Even though these groups had no practice time together and were

Monday finished with a short awards presentation and happy hour. The grins from the racers and DE drivers went from ear to ear. Apparently racing in the rain is extremely exciting! Just ask someone watching the race about the “puddle pass” by Jim Buckley. Better yet, ask Jim about it! I’m sure he’d love to tell you.

Wayne Brown holding off Jeff Hamill in the “One at a time, please” chicane. Crosby summed the weekend up: “Another terrific event hosted by Maverick Region. The track operations, corner workers, and the region volunteers were all outstanding. The hospitality presented by the region was second to none. Every detail was attended to in advance from the 996 turbo pace car to the pit stop timing crew. There is nothing negative to report and there is very little that could be improved upon.

Noteworthy performances were presented by Event Chair Glen Gatlin, Registrar Wendy Shoffit, Hospitality and Sponsorship Chair Lanean Hughes, Corner Worker Coordinator Joe McGlohen, and Steward’s Assistant Tom Snodgrass. There were obviously many others that also contributed.”

Thank You to The Porsche Store Premiere Sponsor of the Club Race! 14

Many thanks go to the Porsche Store for being such a fantastic premier sponsor. Without their support and the support of the rest of our sponsors, we could not have put on the event. We look forward to working with you all again next year!

Here are some other comments regarding the weekend:

Kay Liebel prepping her C4S for another DE session. It was one the best of the year for me... you guys are great! John Crosby

The club racers were amazing with a GT-3 running around 170 MPH and blowing through the chicane at around 70 MPH! It was a beautiful site. Porsches everywhere, it was easy to get bitten, I hope to club race in the future. You just can't go out and not want to participate. All the volunteers did a superb job, no complaints about anything. – Doug Molny (DE #179)

Congrats to all of you for a great event -- the support and the hospitality are unmatched anywhere. - Donna Amico, Chief Race Scrutineer I had a great time at Maverick's club race. It was an experience I waited ALL my whole life for and will never forget. The people were really wonderful and helpful. - Frank Hinds (Club Racer #264)

The Maverick folks were out in great numbers and were so well organized that the event went without disruption and I honestly don't know how a volunteer organization can do so much with so many so well but it made for a wonderful experience in which I am delighted to have been included. I am looking forward to the next one. - Scott Orr (Club Racer #61) Kevin Procaccino catching some air in the infield.

Same Time, Same Place in 2003!

MANY THANKS! It was another outstanding event! Even running in the rain on my very used & abused Kumhos was fun. (I was surprised how well they actually stuck) You guys did a great job! - Jay Walker (DE #525) I also would like to reiterate the many thanks to all the sponsors, organizers, volunteers and corner workers. TMS is a great facility and I had a blast. The corner workers did an awesome job out there in that heat & humidity (few corner stations were without shade). - Noby Takahashi (DE #257)

I just wanted to drop you a quick note and say thanks for everything this weekend. You guys did a great job. From the grid workers to the corner workers to the hospitality and award ceremony, it was first rate! I was proud to be a sponsor but even more proud to be a racer from the Maverick Region! - Kevin Procaccino (Club Racer #419)

May Tech Session at Park Place By Doug Molny

T

About 7 Maverick members show up and we immediately proceeded to install 2 Corbeau racing seats in my 1979 911SC. We determined that new holes had to be drilled into the seat mounts to accommodate larger bolts to hold down the seat brackets. This worked just fine thanks to Jimmy Hayes’ suggestions. Upon completion I placed my helmet on my head and sat down only to find my head sticking out of the sunroof! It was obvious that the seat pads were too thick and had to be cut down. We decided to wait to do that on the following Monday. We then moved on to installing the Pagid Orange brake pads which only took a few minutes. There were several of us who have never done this before and wanted to learn how. We were amazed how easy it is.

he service and parts department at Park Place Porsche made this event very special. We arrived around 8:30 AM Saturday May 11th to donuts, orange juice, and coffee. Once the parts department opened they handed out GT-2 T-Shirts, Porsche hats and key chains, This was an unexpected treat.

The race seats waiting to be installed.

Also available were corner weight scales which are placed under each wheel to check the load each wheel carries. The result is the ability to adjust the weight each wheel carries to the ground which effects the car diagonally as one wheel may be lighter and would effect the corner entry, exit and braking. This adjustment is available to everyone and I would suggest this at least twice a year. Thanks again to Park Place Porsche for hosting this tech session we look forward to the next one.

We then moved into another building for the Hunter Alignment Machine which is had digital cameras and targets for precise alignment. Autocross # 2 - Mineral Wells By Noby Takahashi

Q

A few of us stayed around to help Cody and Kevin set up the autocross course. At first, we were a bit mystified in the back of the truck with the course; we all thought that Kevin had finally lost it! After driving the course a few times on Saturday night, I knew that it was going to be a blast on Sunday! But even before we got started on Sunday morning, there were a few problems. A huge storm rolled through on Saturday night, knocking over the Porta-Potties (Fran the Windex Lady, thank you for cleaning them), the timing trailer off its jacks, and most of the cones on the course. Yikes! Just minor obstacles, we managed to start the event with minimal delay.

uite a few Mavericks (and non-Mavs) wandered out to Mineral Wells again for the second Time Trial/Autocross weekend of the season. There was a very large turnout on Saturday for the Time Trial on Course #2. Because SCCA had their Regional AX at TMS on Sunday, we only had 2 non-Porsches for a well-designed course by Kevin Hardison.

...thought that Kevin had finally lost it... I think everyone enjoyed Kevin’s course, there was lots of positive feedback. I even beat the Cockroach (granted it wasn’t Ed’s times). That guy in the black SC (with cheater tires?) sent me off to the cleaners on this day. Wendy had some awesome times over the weekend and her screams of joy could be heard over in Cool.

Saturday morning started off with a slight mist/drizzle. At least it wasn’t a hailstorm like we encountered at the last event! I had a chance to check out some of the ‘changes’ to Corner 2 while taking out a Honda S2000 driver to show him the course. Few small potholes and loads of gravel required some adjustments to the line.

If you’re gonna hit a cone, do it RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE! (Wendy Shoffit) Thank you James, Wendy, Cody, Kevin, Mr. Nancy Dugan, Ed and all the others that helped make this another awesome weekend out in Mineral Wells.

Check out the wing on Carl Amond’s 914!

With everything else that is going on, the next event won’t be until end of June. Be warned, I’m scheduled to design the autocross course. I’ll be trying to come up with some remote-controlled cones to fly out in front of ‘Too Damn Fast’ Chuck (or I’ll pay off the corner workers to pull the fishing line taped to the cones….).

Not sure what happened, but I managed to drop over 6 seconds from last year and almost beat ‘Too Damn Fast’ Chuck Machala. Chuck showed up with his brand new Kumho Victoracers and I tried to give him some ‘friendly’ advice on tire pressure (“Chuck, I think you want to start them at 38F/40R cold!”). For some reason, he didn’t heed my words of wisdom. At least I didn’t let some guy in a black SC beat me!

Dining a la Cars by Christy Sears

P

rior to May 16th, my experience of Mayo Performance had been to pull up outside to drop off or pick up Cody when our 914 has been in for repairs or improvements. After a recent repair stint lasting several weeks, I figured it was about time I checked out our 914’s home away from home. The annual May at Mayo’s dinner seemed the perfect opportunity.

you can get involved. As we digested (BBQ and Parade info), we headed outdoors to get a last look at all the assembled cars. Pretty soon, the rumble of Richard Fisher’s Chevy V8 engine (in a 914 no less!) drew a crowd in the driveway. But before long, the mosquitoes and Cody’s weariness from a day of driving won out, and we called it a night.

Many thanks to the following for a great evening: Ed Mayo for all his hard work in getting the shop ready for visitors, Ussery Printing for co-sponsoring the event (supplying all the table decorations and sidewalk chalk for the kids), and Eric Erz for putting it all together. If you haven’t had the experience of fine dining in an auto shop, make sure to mark your calendar for next year. See you in May, at Mayo’s.

The Saturday of May at Mayo’s coincided with the Hill Country Region Drivers’ Education event at Motorsport Ranch. Although many Maverick Region members spent the day negotiating Rattlesnake and the off-camber turn at Ricochet (See honey, I do listen when you dissect the course!), we had a great turnout for dinner. As guests arrived, the lot in front of Mayo’s was filled with beautiful Porsches – the spectrum ranged from the Shoffits’ 911 (fresh from a day o’ spinning at MSR) to Rich Johnson’s pristine yellow 914.

Mini Tech Tip - Batteries by John Halla

EXOTIC CAR & BIKE SHOW

To fill cells in your Porsche's battery, try using a turkey baster. The model appropriated from my kitchen has a plastic tube about 10 inches long, and a rubber squeeze bulb. The tube's diameter allows plunging it into the neck of a gallon jug of distilled water. Just plunge and squeeze. When you release, there is a enough water to replenish one cell in a 12 volt battery. If you need two squeezes, your battery was really low. Batteries need to be filled before the summer season. Electrolyte (the liquid in batteries) should cover the tops of the plates in each cell.

. . . If you need two squeezes. . . I like to keep mine just below the bottom of the filler tube that the caps screw into. Using the baster and a flash light, one can add precisely the amount of distilled water that each cell needs, without the messy overflow that may occur with other types of battery fillers that have check valves in their stems. This is especially helpful for some early 911's were access to the battery is only obtained after the spare has been pulled out of the trunk.

Once you have used a kitchen device for battery work, it becomes a garage only tool. This is because you probably pick up some sulfuric acid on the tip of the baster.
