Ups and Downs by Jan Mayo, Slipstream Managing Editor

Y

ears ago Lucy said in a Peanuts comic strip, “I don't want any ups and downs. I only want ups and ups and ups!” Well there have been a whole bunch of UPS here recently. At the Club Race over Memorial Day I was thrilled to see Steve Watkins car… wait a minute, last I heard he was still on crutches recovering from his private plane wreck (see January issue). Well it indeed was Steve not only walking unaided except for a small ankle brace, but driving and racing quite well. Rah Rah.

final standings of the various races. Such caring and giving of baskets and bags of goodies and visitation time for our out of town friends makes me very proud to be a Maverick. The down? Bob and Brooke's cars are not so good. But when you look at the overall scheme of things, life and limb - ALL our guys are safe and sound. We love you Bob, Brooke, Rick and Steve. It's good - and will be great - when we see you all UP and dancing and driving and racing again.

More UPS - Bob Dunn is home and walking hot laps around his kitchen and living room. After a collision in Big Bend with Brooke Van Horn, he spent a week in the hospital. He's back home now and recovering well. Brooke is UP and endeavoring to not catch a cold because his cracked sternum would be very painful with a sneeze or cough. Both gentlemen are doing well and are very grateful for the help, care and love sent their way by Maverick Region (another UP). Many, many Mavericks went to visit Bob and Karen while they enjoyed the hospitality of Harris Methodist Hospital. Several ladies provided Karen with snacks, lotions and magazines while the guys bench raced with Bob filling him in on the

Photos by Wendy Shoffit

Another UP was seeing Rick Randall walking around the paddock. While he can't get in his Porsche yet due to his rather large HALO device he can get around very well and he was smiling and chatting with everyone while watching the racing. He's actually feeling so good he wants the doctors to rig up the HALO to be water proof so he can get back in the pool again. Just no diving, Rick!

Rick Randall isn’t letting a little thing like a Halo stop him!

Catch my Draft by James Shoffit, the Maverick Region President

I

am now recovering from the great racing weekend bestowed upon us. Le Mans and US Grand Prix falling on the same weekend was quite a Father's Day treat! Lewis Hamilton has brought a bunch of excitement back that might have been lacking with Michael Schumacher leaving. Waiting for the kid to make a single mistake is getting quite tiring, though. But there have been some good races this year. Porsche was well represented at Le Mans with Patrick Long and his team taking first place in the GT2 class. And to top it all off, we had a wonderful Father's Day picnic hosted by Andrea and Bryan Bell. Bryan fought off the rain with his grilling tools, and the afternoon was wonderful. The kids had a blast swimming, the adults had a blast chatting, and the food and hospitality were wonderful. But one of my favorite things to do with the Porsche people locally is the lunches. I always enjoy eating, and eating with friends makes it even better. Right now the Lewisville lunch is doing pretty well, but I haven't heard as many good reports about the others. I think what we need there is someone to take charge - like Lanean used to - and get us going. So I would like to get a volunteer for each of the lunches - Bedford, Plano, and Addison (I will take on the Lewisville lunch) - and have them do the following things. 1) Announce to the email list that the lunch is coming up (a day or two in advance so people can make plans). 2) answer emails or phone calls from people having questions about the lunch. 3) At the restaurant, tell the manager and/or hostess that the Porsche Club is there and where you will be sitting. I think that could help to increase attendance. Just knowing ONE person will be there should make it easier for people to commit, and if the manager or hostess know we are there, they can direct people to our table that ask about us. So send me an email to volunteer - president@mavpca.org.

Another position we need to fill is the chair for Autocross and Time Trial. That used to be two positions, but Bryan Bell made the case that one person can handle it, and he certainly has. But if you want to volunteer for JUST time trials or JUST autocross, please let me know. The AX/TT chair is responsible for talking to the track owners and locking in dates, designing the courses, and the general flow of the events. You can talk to Bryan Bell if you need more info to decide. It needs to be someone who can commit to coming to nearly all the events though. Parade is less than 2 weeks away, as I write this. All the planning is in high gear. We are trying to find all the stuff we want to see on the way there and on the way back. Trying to find parking for your tow vehicle and trailer can be problematic. It would be nice if we could just drive the car out, but 2 weeks worth of gear for 2 adults and a 10 year old just won't fit in a 911. Not like we pack, anyway! If you are interested in finding out more about Parade, and couldn't make it this year (or any past years), come to our Post Parade Dinner Social - those of us that went can fill you in on all the details as to why on earth you would spend a week of your vacation doing all these crazy things. Wendy and I are going to do the Parade Rally for the first time this year. We have done local rallies quite a few times, but this will be the first one at the national level. Teri Davis did a good job with her recent rally school getting us ready for it. So hopefully we will make her proud! Another fun event coming up is the Murder Mystery Dinner. This one will be at the Old Mill Inn near Fair Park. It will probably fill up, so sign up soon. Details are on www.clubregistration.net. I missed the last one, and sure don't want to miss this one! Go sign up today! Come on out and join the fun! See you soon!

Maverick Minutes by Charlie Davis

M

R board meeting on June 5, 2007…In attendance: James Shoffit, Bob Bianconi, Mark Gluck, Dennis Chamberlin, Bob Kuykendahl, Christy Dominick, Denny Payne, Lisa Steele, Tracey Gross, Joe McGlohen, Bryan Bell, Joel Nannis, Charlie Davis, Teri Davis, Jan Mayo, & Wendy Shoffit. James called the meeting to order at 7:01. It only lasted a few minutes, though. He reported that there was an “incident” involving two cars at the CR. We sent cards. The Steward's report was good. Rick Randall was at the CR, sporting his “big head.”

Tracey reported that we made money at Cinco de May at Mayo's. No specific number was quoted. The next social event will be the Father's Day Picnic. Registration cutoff is next Tuesday. Joel will (again) handle the Wash & Shine/Concours. We need to make a $1400 deposit for the Murder Mystery Dinner on Saturday, August 4. We can get this deposit back if registration for the event is low. We need 40 people to attend to be financially viable. The board decided to approve this, since the last Murder Mystery Dinner was well attended. Tracey also reminded us that Founders Day will be at the Austin Ranch. She is still looking for a Holiday Party site.

PCA National has asked us to host the 2008 Winter Board Meeting. The schedule is TBD.

Joe stated that we have a policy of only having safe events. Nobody argued with him.

Joe had a couple of problems, even before it was his time to have problems. First, he noticed that the plate of cookies (being passed around to sweeten up everyone's attitude) was not all cookies; there were some brownies, too. This was unacceptable. Next, he asked everyone to, “check yourself for standing water.” Turns out, he was the only one with a pet mosquito and we left it that way.

Bryan agreed with Joe about safety. This was the first time this has happened and bodes well for future Board Meetings.

Bob B. asked if we wanted a Fall Concours. We did. Decided that Oct 13th was best date. There is an Charity AX at TMS on the 14th. May turn this into a Roundup weekend? Bob plans a school for judges prior to this event. Mark has insurance for all pending events. Dennis said the last Happy Hour was good, but the service was slow. The next Happy Hour will be at Champps…then Rio Mambo in July. Bob K. and Dennis discussed the 2006 audit. We authorized up to $1000 for this. It will not be an “official” audit. They will consult with Bob Knight, who has done several audits in the past. Bob reported that the May Minutes had an error: the -$105,000 figure should be -$15,000. He further reported that the profit from the CR will be lower than last year, but the DE profit will be up. He doesn't know the final numbers yet. We discussed the perception that in general, all CR attendance was down lately. An exception is that the bigname track events are doing well. Christy has goodies, some of which is new stuff. She continues to add the new items to the web site. She reported that Denny will have a “banner ad” up soon on the front page. Christy proposed that we have small raffles at all our events. She and Joel, working with Keith Olcha, Sponsorship Chair, will organize that. Denny made a name badge. Sent it around the table for comments. He needs a web editing tool. Not Dreamweaver (too expensive and complex), but will look into some other options. He will get with James off-line and discuss this. Lisa was speechless at what she said to Denny! Recovered quickly after the laughter stopped. She apologized for “dropping the ball” at the CR. We explained that there was no broken ball. She has some new ads in the pipeline.

8

Bryan noted that attendance is still down at events. The latest double Time Trial weekend had 29 drivers on both days. That was the bad news. The good news is that attendance by ladies is up (about 27% of the total was ladies)! And many of the most experienced ladies were not in attendance. Bryan also mentioned that there will be a “bounce house” and horseshoes at the Father's Day Picnic. Joel asked for prizes for the Father's Day Concours. Joel reported that locally, we have 1197 active members. National says we have 1088 active and 828 affiliate for a total of 1914 members. Charlie asked for a new (5th) member of the AX/TT Rules Committee. Mike Lockas was nominated and approved. Teri said she only has 3 people signed up for the Rally School and the cutoff is one day away. She estimates that she needs a minimum of 10 entrants to break even. We discussed this and agreed that she would have to cancel the event if more people don't register. Jan, as usual, asked for more articles. She asked for a key to the storage unit. Joe said he has some. Charlie also needs a key. Wendy told us that Jan will not be Slipstream Editor in 2008. We need a new victim, er, volunteer. In order to help with the workload, she wants to get a Mac laptop for the Assistant Editor. Also, Kevin Hardison is stepping back a bit at Ussery's. A different employee there will handle our newsletter. This may mean we have to do more of the final layout? We discussed switching from Quark to something like InDesign to make these jobs easier. Wendy reported that we collected $336 for our charity at the recent CR. Teri said she needs to “retire” from being the Rally Chair. Her national Parade duties are taking all her time. James adjourned at 8:44 PM.

Rain, Shine or Oil? by Clint Blackman

S

unday morning, June 3rd, started with dark, almost black rain clouds interrupted by bright flashes of lightning and loud claps of thunder. Then the rain came...and it rained hard. But as quickly as the rain came...it passed! So by noon, 14 “storm fearless” Mavericks met in Mesquite and we took off in eight cars to see the East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore, Texas.

Photos by Wendy Shoffi

We were greeted by the museum director who conducted a personal tour for our group...her son owned a Porsche...so we got special treatment! We started with a movie that helped both the children and adults learn about where petroleum comes from and how it was found in the 1930s. Oil, the lifeblood of our cars, is really quite difficult to come by. Afterwards, in a few short steps, we were taken back to the 1930s when Kilgore went from a population of 800 people to 15,000 overnight. The Daisy Looking for Hannah Montana? Bradford No. 3 oil well “came in” and it was “a gusher.” We “talked” with the editor of the Gusher Gazette newspaper, stopped by the Boom Town barber shop, the post office and the bank. The banker told us about “black gold” and the riches that were right underneath our feet! We even caught a movie at the Boom Town Cinema.

Photos by Wendy Shoffi

The storms cleared and it was a beautiful day for a Porsche Sunday Drive. We opted for a direct route and took Interstate 20 east. I-20 is a fine highway with ample places to stop for “potty breaks.” It is always amazing to see how our Sunday Drive cars always draw a crowd of car lovers wherever we stop. As we drove east, the forests of East Texas were in spring time “prime.” In two short hours we arrived in Kilgore to venture into the world of oil production and exploration.

Oil derrick. (duh)

After the tour we all had a new appreciation for the “wildcatters” and “roughnecks” who produced one of the largest oil fields the world has ever seen. We adjourned to the finest barbeque stand in Texas...Bodacious Barbeque! And after a meal of those fine ribs and sliced beef sandwiches...no one argued with me.

Photo provided by Wendy Shoffi

Our next Sunday Drive is special...we are going to ride the Texas State Railroad! October 7, 2007 will be an all day affair! Picnic lunch and a Maverick party in the Club Car...Don't miss it.

The group enjoying the beautiful weather. 9

From the Tech Q&A - Cayenne Won’t Unlock! by Peter Smith, 997/Cayenne Tech Advisor

Q

uestion: A friend returned to her Cayenne after work today and it won't unlock. The remote on the key won't unlock it, and sticking the key in the lock won't work either.

I suggested that the car battery is probably dead, but she says the little flashing LEDs are still on. Of course, they don't take much power, so I still think the car battery is dead. Any other thoughts about what may be wrong? What would be the procedure to gain access to the car? Don't the 996's have a place to hook up a 9V battery in case this happens? Is there a similar procedure for the Cayenne?

A

nswer: It sounds like the remote died, if the battery is going dead there would have been a display in the dash telling you that the remote battery is low. Now why the key won't open the door is another issue, I think the key is not for that car. Any Cayenne key that is programed for that Cayenne will work in the car. You walk up to the car, push the button and the car unlocks, you then get in and start up and go. The ignition switch assembly in the dash works with any Cayenne key as long as it is programmed for it. We have had used cars with different keys that all unlocked the car and then started it up, but you only use the key lock in the door when the battery is dead or the remotes don't work. You might need AAA to open the door for you or see if there is another key to try and open the car. Peter Smith - PCA WebSite - 1/19/2007 %#2 (ALF 0AGE 3LIPSTREAM !D PDF 0-

Additional comments by Tom Charlesworth, PCA National Tech Advisor: Peter, It turns out that you are exactly right. This Cayenne was delivered with three keys. One of which doesn’t match the others. The one oddball key does not work in the doors. The other two keys work just fine. Just by sheer luck of the draw, the key that my friend has carried with her for the last year or so was the wrong one. Tom When you buy a used Cayenne, unlock the drivers door manually with each key to be sure.........

Caution: Club Race Slippery When Wet

Racers came from all over Texas, from Louisiana, Oklahoma and Kansas. I am sure they had studied the weather forecasts. I expect, like us, they had searched for the most optimistic source and convinced themselves, and each other, that a 70% chance of scattered or isolated storms in Cresson obviously meant they would be anywhere but over MSR. As it turned out they were right and wrong. The weather played a big part for a lot of the weekend but all of the races and all but one of the qualifying sessions were run on a dry or drying track.

My own weekend got off to a questionable start on Friday afternoon. Loading cars on trailers has never been a favorite job. I worry as the horizon swings skyward and the car shoots up and on to the trailer. Friday's exercise was carried out in pouring rain and without proper consideration of the potential for disaster. Wet tires, wet ramps and, worse yet, wet wooden ramp extensions

Graduates of the Rookie School combined to get the car moving sideways as the sky came into view. It ended with the car diagonally across the trailer and with the steering at opposite lock. On and safe - just. Later in the afternoon, the rain stopped and early arrivals had a dry interval to set up big rigs, RVs, tents and trailers. The paddock began to look like a race event and rang with the sounds of unsilenced race cars. MSR has some great parking areas that provide good views of the action, good access to the facilities and that drain well even in the greatest downpours. Arrive early, get a good spot seemed to be the order of the day. It was nice to see some old friends and meet some new people. Bryan Henderson’s chalk talk for newcomers to MSR and for our new racers went well. He said he gave away his best secrets of how to get around the track quickly. But did he? We will

never really know. Dave Maynard, the National Steward for the event, gave four drivers attending the race school and three drivers from other race series their orientation. He stressed safety, the necessary skills and the need to live together on the race track. I think I could hear the rapid beating of at least four hearts as Dave gave them their instructions and they anticipated what was ahead of them.

Colin ready to race

Practice on Saturday morning was a wash-out for many of us. Those intrepid Mavericks that went out came back with lurid tales of slides and spins. One of our drivers was on his way back to “black flag” after a 360 degree spin when he managed a better yet 720. What was he practicing? For his efforts he got the Workers Choice award. Practice after lunch was dry for the red group but wet for the whites. For the red group read older or less powerful cars, and for white read fire breathing monsters. The times recorded in this practice set starting positions for the combined practice starts and fun race. The older and less powerful cars proved quicker in the dry conditions than the monsters in the wet. There we were at the front of the grid all in a neat little row with all of our cup car friends roaring, coughing and spluttering at the back of the pack. Oh the ignominy of it. As we gridded I thought “I hope they know these are only practice starts.” And what about our new drivers, what were they about to practice? From reports after the race it seems there was considerable added excitement for the drivers of the older cars as one after another these leviathans roared their way to the front of the field. Who knew their brakes make such a strange metallic noise when applied in earnest close to a helmeted ear on the way into Rattlesnake? After you, no, after you, I insist.

The feature sprint races were run in separate groups. The racing was close in the middle of the red pack but Jim Buckley was in a class by himself, winning overall in his F car. Bryan Henderson came in second and Colin Graidage third, both in F cars. Youri Bebic was the class winner in G, John Polesitter Gerald Isbell (110 GTC4) leads the pack in Big Bend at the start of the white group mini sprint. Bicknell in E, Mike Brodigan in In the white group Mini sprint we witnessed the worst racSP3,Rusty Tilton in GT5S, Albert Graci in I and Richard Kassel in ing incident the club has seen in years. Two cars collided at the J. There were many tales of heroism and skill from within the exit of Big Bend and we were very sad to see Bob Dunn taken to pack once the race was over. Some no doubt true and some imagthe hospital by CareFlight helicopter. Our thoughts and best ined. Our new drivers all did well and appeared to enjoy their wishes are with him and his family as he recovers. Brooke Van baptisms of fire. Horn, the driver of the other car was able to walk away from the White run group consisted of cars in classes C, D and all the accident. He was badly bruised but otherwise unhurt. We are so GT classes. In the white group feature sprint race, Glen Gatlin was grateful for their survival from this high speed impact and wish the overall winner in his 1999 GT3 Cup car. Second place overall them both a speedy and complete recovery. was Gerald Isbell in his 2007 Cup car and third place overall was a fast drive by new PCA racer Keith Verges. Keith is a long time member of Motorsport ranch and a consistent podium achiever in NASA's Spec Miata series. George Abdulla won D-stock closely contested against Steve Watkins and Bob Dunn won C-stock. Alan Smith won GT3S, Bruce Busby won GT2S and West Dillard won GT1S. Lew Boucher won GTP2 and Wayne Brown won GT4S. The Red group mini sprint race went well with close racing in the middle of the pack after a hectic and interesting start.

The response from the tower, corner workers, EMS and recovery teams was excellent and everyone at the event was grateful for their assistance to our injured drivers. Despite this unfortunate accident the Dinner and Awards ceremony went ahead. We enjoyed an excellent dinner from 'On the Border'. Joel Nannis presented awards to class winners, thanks to Lee Wilkins for providing the awards and Keith Olcha presented some tremendous raffle prizes. Monday dawned with heavy gray clouds over Cresson. The weather seemed determined to dampen the spirits with a 70% forecast of rain. However, as the morning wore on it seemed we might miss the rain and so it proved.

The mornings combined Minisprint race set grid positions for the afternoon's combined Enduro. We were grateful to be allowed back to our proper places on the grid with cup cars at the front and we, mere mortals, safely towards the back. Much of the mini sprint was driven under double yellow as first one then another car ended in the mud and had to be rescued. The main Enduro racing was spirited and individual competitions kept the larger than expected crowd of spectators engaged. The race winner was Jay Walker, Barry Moore was second and

It was a particularly long fun race and it must have been great to watch these very quick cars clawing their way back through the field. It was good practice for the combined Enduro and everyone seemed to enjoy the format. Mercifully, we all qualified in the same conditions for the Enduro so our big buddies were all at the front of the grid for the start.

Dan Wright third. The race was a rousing success with no yellow flags despite some of our racers fighting their way through the mud off the racing surface. We listened later with great amusement to stories of adventures in the long grass.

An hour is a long time to drive a race car at full tilt and by the completion of the race I was ready for the checker. Once back in the pits there was a lot of back slapping and more tall tales about what had happened. Helmet off, I listened to my car pinging as it cooled down and enjoyed the smells of hot tires, hot brakes and hot engine. Nothing much compares to what we get to do with these cars and with these people. The whole thing is a privilege. Now, to thank some people for making it all possible. The Race Committee headed by Joel Nannis and Bill Miller. Wonderful arrangements and all executed without a hitch. Joel was tireless the whole weekend, seemed to be everywhere and always working. Thanks especially to the following people who all contributed to the smooth running of the event. Registration was in the hands of Wendy Shoffit who also produced the program, Grid coordinator was Bob Benson, Grid controller was Jan Mayo, Safety and Corner workers were under the watchful eye of Joe McGlohen, Hospitality was managed by Lisa Steele and was seamless, James Shoffit and Bob Glowacki assisted with timing and scoring, Mary Coney was in the tower, Wayne Brown was our medical liaison, Keith Olcha arranged sponsorship. Ben Witry was the Stewards assistant, Cliff Blackshear was our Lead Technician, Mark Steele and Tom Snodgrass were our Tech Coordinators. Tom, by the way, drove the pace car and due to the wet conditions had to exit the track at the pit entrance rather than the usual spot at Tombstone. That meant Tom was in the firing line when the green flag dropped. Never has the pace car gone so fast. Bryan Henderson, Keith Olcha and John Sandusky were Club Race and Drivers education consultants and Christy Dominick was the voice of Radio MSR.

PCA Club Racing is only one part of PCA's driving opportunity. This weekend we had eighty one solo qualified Drivers Education cars sharing the track and the weather. It is not too much of a stretch between DE and Club Racing and we hope to welcome many of our current DE drivers into the Club Race fold in the future. When you think you can, you can, and we hope you will. One last thing, it was good to see Steve Watkins back racing after his horrific plane crash. Steve won the award for best prepared race car. Good to have you back. That's about it. See you all next year and remember, when you think all is lost, gas, gas, gas.

A big thank you to our corner workers who stood out in the rain at corner stations. Thank you for taking care of us. Thank you also to the emergency personnel. We couldn't do this without you and thank you once again for your care and attention to our injured drivers. Thank you to our sponsors. Again this year our main sponsor was Boardwalk Auto Group. Boardwalk has been a wonderful supporter of PCA racing and our Maverick Region. Thank you. Boardwalk Auto Group was joined by a great group of sponsors 15

Running the Loops by James Milton

I decided to take my first run slowly to get better sense of the layout and see just how tight those turns were. During that slow Clint Blackman is all smiles! casual run, I knocked over a cone. Little did I know, this would be a recurring theme throughout the day. After I finished the first run, having assaulted a cone for good measure, I figured that was going to be about as bad as it would get so I was ready to dial it up a bit for the second run. Watching the 914's doing their thing out on the course between my runs was great. I couldn't believe how folks like Kevin Hardison could get through the first element, the “Inverted Treble Clef ”, and be in perfect position to get back on the straight. Seeing the 944's taking the large “Big Hoop” loop so smoothly on the second half of the course was an inspiration, too; a testament to the drivers' skill. But I drive a 911 so I was keen to see what the Shoffits and Bob Kuykendall were doing in their respective 911's. I remembered the wisdom imparted to me by Wendy at the previous event. Slow in, fast out, be smooth and look ahead. On my second run, I cut 6 seconds off and didn't hit any cones. I'm feeling kinda good at this point so I decide to “go 22

James giving a wide berth to that cone! for it” some more on run #3. I started strong from the line and turned in aggressively like Fernando Alonso, finessed it carefully through the first half of the course and managed to successfully navigate the “E-Loops” on the backside. Making good time heading into the “Big Hoop” loop, I turned in. The car took a set and proceeded to travel along the prescribed arc. Problem is, it was the wrong arc and I clipped another cone!! Ugh, two in one day. What is this? Concentration shot. Must focus and get the lap done. Bingo, I got a 64.73 plus that darn cone. Yes, a respectable time but I knew there was still more left…That would have to wait until the next session. We switched to working and I had an excellent time hanging out with James Shoffit at station two, watching our fellow racers. I love working the course almost as much as driving it because you get to see how others do it up close. That black 911 Turbo was amazing to watch as it gobbled up the track warping from element to element. Michael Vasey, extremely fast in the STI, defied at least one of Newton's laws of motion and missed cones we thought were goners and Jeff Hermann in the 912 was driving so smoothly he made it look easy. The ladies class was populated with some great talent too. Tannia Dobbins and

It was cool and very cloudy on Sunday and like a kid on Christmas Eve, I couldn't wait to see what kind of track layout Bryan had in store for us. What I found was a course that was very cleverly laid out with many interesting loops especially the first set. I walked the course twice hoping to find that perfect line and I thought I had a good idea of what to do

I

was really looking forward to AX#4 at Pennington Field. My first Autocross in 14 years was at Pennington Field last year. This year with a few events under my belt and plenty of good advice from fellow members, with whom I've become acquainted, I looked forward to the event even more. In the days leading up to the event, I was a bit concerned about the possibility of rain over the weekend and what the effect would be on the course. When Bryan Bell posted on the mailing list “The course is called “Loop-E” come on down and find out why that is!” I was a little concerned. A technical course in the rain had me thinking the worst. I wouldn't be able to see, the glass would fog up, I won't be able to remember the course and on and on. When the hyperventilating stopped, I remembered that my very first run in an autocross was in the rain and it wasn't so bad. It was a lot of fun. That was 20 years ago.

Lisa Steele giving pointers to Denise Sanchez

Andrea Bell in their Boxsters looked great attacking the loops with great verve. After watching all those great runs, I was a bit anxious, ready to attack the course and get my 64.xx with no cones. Run #4 got me my best time in the competition of 65.576. Respectable, but not what I wanted so I go back out for run 5 with a vengeance. I feel like I'm making good time until I get to the last part of the “Big Hoop” loop when I press a little too hard and got the front end sliding….you guessed it. Right into a cone, dead center. I didn't just hit it. The car ate it up and it wouldn't let go and I dragged it to the staging area. I had to endure the embarrassment and with that, some good natured ribbing. I've never hit so many cones in one event in my life. No worries, it was great fun but I'll probably get placed on an “Orange Cone Offenders” list somewhere and be barred from ever doing a slalom again. Life goes on. It turned out to be a great day. We didn't get a bit of rain, finished up early enough to do some fun runs, got to see some great cars and hang out with some really cool people. Special thanks to Bryan for designing a unique, challenging and fun course. With the first half of the Autocross season in the books, I'm looking forward to the next event in Mineral Wells and I hope to see you there. Happy Hour at Bavarian Grill by Dennis Chamberlain

W

Kelly (who had never really thought about owning a Porsche) went to Santa Fe to visit a friend she hadn’t seen in about seven years. Her friend had a 1990 911 that needed some service, so she asked Kelly Loy and Tracey Gross Kelly to follow her to Albuquerque, leave the 911 there for service, and return to Santa Fe in the other car. Kelly got to drive the 911 on the 50 mile journey, and even though she hadn’t driven a car with a manual transmission in 25 years, it came back to her very quickly. She liked the car. She liked the car a lot. In fact, she loved the car. After dropping the car off, they just happened to go to a Roadrunner Region brunch, where Kelly was talking about how much fun she just had driving her friend’s Porsche. The Roadrunner VP pulled out the region’s newsletter with a picture of a 2002 996 that was for sale by one of the other Roadrunner members. Kelly made Kay and Alan Leibel tickling Tinker Edwards up her mind to buy it - sight unseen (other than the picture). The next day she was scheduled to fly back to Dallas, and the owner of the 996 brought it to the airport for her to test drive, and you guessed it she bought it and drove it back to Dallas. She didn’t even take her luggage to the airport because she had every intention of driving that Porsche back to Dallas. All this happened in only 24 hours. I think the word is “spontaneous”! Anyone who moves this fast has to be a natural for the track. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more from Kelly. Oh yes – for our July 19th happy hour we’re back to Rio Mambo in Colleyville. Don’t forget their seafood quesadillas! 24

e had a good turnout for our May 17th happy hour at Bavarian Grill, including several new members and/or first time happy hour attendees. The best part, though, was this story about Kelly Loy, one of our newest members.

Welcome, New Members! You have just joined one of the best and most active PCA Regions in the country! Some clubs focus solely on social events, while others focus on just show and shine concours events. Maverick Region is a club that focuses on providing our members with the tools necessary to have the ultimate in driving experiences. You will notice that our region has many Time Trials, Autocrosses, and Drivers’ Education (DE) events (in addition to a yearly Club Race). This has been the spirit of the region for quite some time. We have some of the finest instructors in the country. Make sure you take full advantage of the driving experiences we have to offer. Racing is not ALL we focus on, though. If racing doesn’t suit you, we have monthly happy hours, three monthly lunch gatherings, regular dinner socials, frequent driving tours on some fabulous roads in and around Texas, driving rallies (fun for the whole family), and regular opportunities to support our perpetual charity, the Hope Shelter. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask us... we might just add something extra to the calendar. Please also feel free to share article ideas (and submissions)to editor@mavpca.org.

We’d love to hear from you!
